Symmetries of a differential equations is one of the most important concepts in theory of differential equations and physics. One of the most prominent equations is KdV (Kortwege-de Vries) equation with application in shallow water theory. In this paper we are going to explain a particular method for finding symmetries of KdV equation, which is called Harrison method. Our tools in this method are Lie derivatives and differential forms, which will be discussed in the first section more precisely. In second chapter we will have some analysis on the solutions of KdV equation and we give a method, which is called first integral method for finding the solutions of KdV equation.
In this paper we present a set of results on the symmetries of the lattice Schwarzian Korteweg-de Vries (lSKdV) equation. We construct the Lie point symmetries and, using its associated spectral problem, an infinite sequence of generalized symmetries and master symmetries. We finally show that we can use master symmetries of the lSKdV equation to construct non-autonomous non-integrable generalized symmetries.
In this paper we present a set of results on the integration and on the symmetries of the lattice potential Korteweg-de Vries (lpKdV) equation. Using its associated spectral problem we construct the soliton solutions and the Lax technique enables us to provide infinite sequences of generalized symmetries. Finally, using a discrete symmetry of the lpKdV equation, we construct a large class of non-autonomous generalized symmetries.
A complete classification of low-order conservation laws is obtained for time-dependent generalized Korteweg-de Vries equations. Through the Hamiltonian structure of these equations, a corresponding classification of Hamiltonian symmetries is derived. The physical meaning of the conservation laws and the symmetries is discussed.
We apply the discrete multiscale expansion to the Lax pair and to the first few symmetries of the lattice potential Korteweg-de Vries equation. From these calculations we show that, like the lowest order secularity conditions give a nonlinear Schroedinger equation, the Lax pair gives at the same order the Zakharov and Shabat spectral problem and the symmetries the hierarchy of point and generalized symmetries of the nonlinear Schroedinger equation.
The N=2 supersymmetric α=1 KdV hierarchy in N=2 superspace is considered and its rich symmetry structure is uncovered. New nonpolynomial and nonlocal, bosonic and fermionic symmetries and Hamiltonians, bi-Hamiltonian structure as well as a recursion operator connecting all symmetries and Hamiltonian structures of the N=2 α=1 KdV hierarchy are constructed in explicit form. It is observed that the algebra of symmetries of the N=2 supersymmetric α=1 KdV hierarchy possesses two different subalgebras of N=2 supersymmetry.
Lie symmetry method is applied to investigate symmetries of the combined KdV-nKdV equation, that is a new integrable equation by combining the KdV equation and negative order KdV equation. Symmetries which are obtained in this article, are further helpful for reducing the combined KdV-nKdV equation into ordinary differential equation. Moreover, a set of eight invariant solutions for combined KdV-nKdV equation is obtained by using proposed method. Out of the eight solutions so obtained in which two solutions generate progressive wave solutions, five are singular solutions and one multisoliton s…
We study solutions of the KdV equation governed by a stationary equation for symmetries from the non-commutative subalgebra, namely, for a linear combination of the master-symmetry and the scaling symmetry. The constraint under study is equivalent to a sixth order nonautonomous ODE possessing two first integrals. Its generic solutions have a singularity on the line $t=0$. The regularity condition selects a 3-parameter family of solutions which describe oscillations near $u=1$ and satisfy, for $t=0$, an equation equivalent to degenerate $P_5$ equation. Numerical experiments show that in this fa…
It is well known that the Camassa-Holm equation possesses numerous remarkable properties characteristic for KdV type equations. In this paper we show that it shares one more property with the KdV equation. Namely, Ibragimov has shown that the KdV and the modified KdV equations are self-adjoint. Starting from the generalization of the Camassa-Holm equation, we prove that the Camassa-Holm equation is self-adjoint. This property is important, e.g. for constructing conservation laws associated with symmetries of the equation in question. Accordingly, we construct conservation laws for the generali…

The coupled KdV-mKdV system arises as the classical part of one of superextensions of the KdV equation. For this system, we prove its complete integrability, i.e., existence of a recursion operator and of infinite series of symmetries.
Solitary waves are localized gravity waves that preserve their consistency and henceforth their visibility through properties of nonlinear hydrodynamics. Solitary waves have finite amplitude and spread with constant speed and constant shape. In this paper, we have used Lie group of transformation method to solve (3 + 1)-dimensional KdV type equation. We have obtained the infinitesimal generators, commutator table of Lie algebra for the KdV type equation. We have achieved a number of exact solutions of KdV type equation in the explicit form through similarity reduction. All the reported results…
Using methods of math.DG/0304245 and [I.S.Krasil'shchik and P.H.M.Kersten, Symmetries and recursion operators for classical and supersymmetric differential equations, Kluwer, 2000], we accomplish an extensive study of the N=1 supersymmetric Korteweg-de Vries equation. The results include: a description of local and nonlocal Hamiltonian and symplectic structures, five hierarchies of symmetries, the corresponding hierarchies of conservation laws, recursion operators for symmetries and generating functions of conservation laws. We stress that the main point of the paper is not just the results on…
In this article we continue to develop the theory of generating symmetries for integrable equations. A technique for computation of generating symmetries using Maple is presented. The technique is based on the standard symmetry method. By using it we find generating symmetries for the KdV, Camassa-Holm, mKdV, sine-Gordon, Boussinesq, associated Degasperis-Procesi and associated Novikov equations.
We carry out group analysis of a class of generalized fifth-order Korteweg-de Vries equations with time dependent coefficients. Admissible transformations, Lie symmetries and similarity reductions of equations from the class are classified exhaustively. A criterion of reducibility of variable coefficient fifth-order KdV equations to their constant coefficient counterparts is derived. Some exact solutions are presented.
We study higher order KdV equations from the GL(2,$\mathbb{R}$) $\cong$ SO(2,1) Lie group point of view. We find elliptic solutions of higher order KdV equations up to the ninth order. We argue that the main structure of the trigonometric/hyperbolic/elliptic $N$-soliton solutions for higher order KdV equations is the same as that of the original KdV equation. Pointing out that the difference is only the time dependence, we find $N$-soliton solutions of higher order KdV equations can be constructed from those of the original KdV equation by properly replacing the time-dependence. We discuss tha…
Some connections between classical and nonclassical symmetries of a partial differential equation (PDE) are given in terms of determining equations of the two symmetries. These connections provide additional information for determining nonclassical symmetry of a PDE and make it easier to solve the system of nonlinear determining equations. As example, new nonclassical symmetries are exhibited for a class of generalized Burgers equation and KdV-type equations are given.
The family F of all potentials V(x) for which the Hamiltonian H in one space dimension possesses a high order Lie symmetry is determined. A sub-family F', which contains a class of potentials allowing a realization of so(2,1) as spectrum generating algebra of H through differential operators of finite order, is identified. Furthermore and surprisingly, the families F and F' are shown to be related to the stationary KdV hierarchy. Hence, the "harmless" Hamiltonian H connects different mathematical objects, high order Lie symmetry, realization of so(2,1)-spectrum generating algebra and families …
In the present paper the non-Noether symmetries of the Toda model, nonlinear Schodinger equation and Korteweg-de Vries equations (KdV and mKdV) are discussed. It appears that these symmetries yield the complete sets of conservation laws in involution and lead to the bi-Hamiltonian realizations of the above mentioned models.
We construct the hierarchy of a multi-component generalisation of modified KdV equation and find exact solutions to its associated members. The construction of the hierarchy and its conservation laws is based on the Drinfel'd-Sokolov scheme, however, in our case the Lax operator contains a constant non-regular element of the underlying Lie algebra. We also derive the associated recursion operator of the hierarchy using the symmetry structure of the Lax operators. Finally, using the rational dressing method, we obtain the one soliton solution, and we find the one breather solution of general ra…
We perform a detailed study on the integrability of the Benney-Lin and KdV-Kawahara equations by using the Lie symmetry analysis and the singularity analysis. We find that the equations under our consideration admit integrable travelling-wave solutions. The singularity analysis is applied for the partial differential equations and the generic algebraic solution is presented.
We present the hierarchy and soliton solutions associated to a multi-component generalisation of the modified Korteweg-de Vries equation. A recursive formula for obtaining the Lax operators associated to the higher flows of the hierarchy is provided. Using the method of rational dressing and the symmetries of the Lax operators we obtain the one-soliton solution. We also derive the general rank one-breather solution and express it in terms of determinants. We present the simplest case of the one-breather solution, which is parametrised by two constant unit vectors normal to each other. Finally,…
It is well-known that the LIE(Locally Induction Equation) admit soliton-type solutions and same soliton solutions arise from different and apparently irrelevant physical models. By comparing the solitons of LIE and Killing magnetic geodesics, we observe that these solitons are essentially decided by two families of isometries of the domain and the target space respectively. With this insight, we propose the new concept of geometric solitons of Hamiltonian flows on manifolds, such as geometric Schrödinger flows and KdV flows for maps. Moreover, we give several examples of geometric solitons of …
Preliminary results about Lie and potential symmetries of a class of Korteweg-de Vries type equations are presented. In order to prove existence of potential symmetries three different systems of so called determining equations are analysed. It is shown that two systems lead only to Lie symmetries while the third system produces potential symmetries provided the equation in question has an appropriate structure
We present a variational approach to a general Lienard-type equation in order to linearize it and, as an example, the Van der Pol oscillator is discussed. The new equation which is almost linear is factorized. The point symmetries of the deformed equation are also discussed and the two-dimensional Lie algebraic generators are obtained.
We find the Lie point symmetries for non-relativistic two-dimensional charged particle motion. These symmetries comprise a quasi-invariance transformation, a time-dependent rotation, a time-dependent spatial translation and a dilation. The associated electromagnetic fields satisfy a system of first-order linear partial differential equations. This system is solved exactly, yielding four classes of electromagnetic fields compatible with Lie point symmetries.
A {\it Lie system} is a nonautonomous system of first-order differential equations admitting a {\it superposition rule}, i.e., a map expressing its general solution in terms of a generic family of particular solutions and some constants. Using that a Lie system can be considered as a curve in a finite-dimensional Lie algebra of vector fields, a so-called {\it Vessiot--Guldberg Lie algebra}, we associate every Lie system with a Lie algebra of Lie point symmetries induced by the Vessiot--Guldberg Lie algebra. This enables us to derive Lie symmetries of relevant physical systems described by firs…
Within the framework of inverse Lie problem, we give some non-trivial examples of coupled Lie remarkable equations, \textit{i.e.}, classes of differential equations that are in correspondence with their Lie point symmetries. In particular, we determine hierarchies of second order partial differential equations uniquely characterized by affine transformations of $\mathbb{R}^{n+m}$, and a system of two third order partial differential equations in two independent variables uniquely determined by the Lie algebra of projective transformations of $\mathbb{R}^4$.
We investigate Lie symmetries of the self-dual Yang-Mills equations in four-dimensional Euclidean space (SDYM). The first prolongation of the symmetry generating vector fields is written down, and its action on SDYM computed. Determining equations are then obtained and solved completely. Lie symmetries of SDYM in Euclidean space are in exact correspondence with symmetries of the full Yang-Mills equations in Minkowski space.
We investigate Lie symmetries of general Yang-Mills equations. For this purpose, we first write down the second prolongation of the symmetry generating vector fields, and compute its action on the Yang-Mills equations. Determining equations are then obtained, and solved completely. Provided that Yang-Mills equations are locally solvable, this allows for a complete classification of their Lie symmetries. Symmetries of Yang-Mills equations in the Lorentz gauge are also investigated.
The dual dynamics of Einstein gravity on AdS$_3$ supplemented with boundary conditions of KdV-type is identified. It corresponds to a two-dimensional field theory at the boundary, described by a novel action principle whose field equations are given by two copies of the "potential modified KdV equation". The asymptotic symmetries then transmute into the global Noether symmetries of the dual action, giving rise to an infinite set of commuting conserved charges, implying the integrability of the system. Noteworthy, the theory at the boundary is non-relativistic and possesses anisotropic scaling …
Utilizing some conservation laws of (1+1)-dimensional integrable local evolution systems, it is conjectured that higher dimensional integrable equations may be regularly constructed by a deformation algorithm. The algorithm can be applied to Lax pairs and higher order flows. In other words, if the original lower dimensional model is Lax integrable (possesses Lax pairs) and symmetry integrable (possesses infinitely many higher order symmetries), then the deformed higher order systems are also Lax integrable and symmetry integrable. For concreteness, the deformation algorithm is applied to the u…
Using the basic prolongation method and the infinitesimal criterion of invariance, we find the most general Lie point symmetries group of the Thomas equation. Looking the adjoint representation of the obtained symmetry group on its Lie algebra, we will find the preliminary classification of its group-invariant solutions. This latter provides a new exact solutions for the Thomas equation.
The 1 + 2 dimensional Bogoyavlensky-Konopelchenko Equation is investigated for its solution and conservation laws using the Lie point symmetry analysis. In the recent past, certain work has been done describing the Lie point symmetries for the equation and this work seems to be incomplete (Ray S (2017) Compt. Math. Appl. 74, 1157). We obtained certain new symmetries and corresponding conservation laws. The travelling-wave solution and some other similarity solutions are studied.
We consider two problems arising in the study of the Schrödinger-Newton equations. The first is to find their Lie point symmetries. The second, as an application of the first, is to investigate an approximate solution corresponding to widely separated lumps of probability. The lumps are found to move like point particles under a mutual inverse-square law of attraction.
The Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto system, which consists of two reaction-diffusion equations with variable cross-diffusion and quadratic nonlinearities, is considered. The system is the most important case of the biologically motivated model proposed by Shigesada et al. A complete description of Lie symmetries for this system is derived. It is proved that the Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto system admits a wide range of different Lie symmetries depending on coefficient values. In particular, the Lie symmetry operators with highly unusual structure are unveiled and applied for finding exact solutions…
The twisted Lie-algebraically deformed relativistic and nonrelativistic phase spaces are constructed with the use of Heisenberg double procedure. The corresponding Heisenberg uncertainty principles are discussed as well.
We investigate Lie symmetries of Einstein's vacuum equations in N dimensions, with a cosmological term. For this purpose, we first write down the second prolongation of the symmetry generating vector fields, and compute its action on Einstein's equations. Instead of setting to zero the coefficients of all independent partial derivatives (which involves a very complicated substitution of Einstein's equations), we set to zero the coefficients of derivatives that do not appear in Einstein's equations. This considerably constrains the coefficients of symmetry generating vector fields. Using the Li…
Starting from nonlocal symmetries related to Bäcklund transformation (BT), many interesting results can be obtained. Taking the well known potential KdV (pKdV) equation as an example, a new type of nonlocal symmetry in elegant and compact form which comes from BT is presented and used to make researches in the following three subjects: two sets of negative pKdV hierarchies and their corresponding bilinear forms are constructed; the nonlocal symmetry is localized by introduction of suitable and simple auxiliary dependent variables to generate new solutions from old ones and to consider some nov…
In this paper, we defined a new multi-component BKP hierarchy which takes values in a commutative subalgebra of $gl(N,\mathbb C)$. After this, we give the gauge transformation of this commutative multi-component BKP (CMBKP) hierarchy. Meanwhile we construct a new constrained CMBKP hierarchy which contains some new integrable systems including coupled KdV equations under a certain reduction. After this, the quantum torus symmetry and quantum torus constraint on the tau function of the commutative multi-component BKP hierarchy will be constructed.
The Lie symmetry classification of the known three-component reaction-diffusion system modelling the spread of an initially localized population of farmers into a region occupied by hunter-gatherers is derived. The Lie symmetries obtained for reducing the system in question to systems of ODEs and constructing exact solutions are applied. Several exact solutions of traveling front type are found, their properties are identified and biological interpretation is discussed.
We assess the ODE/IM correspondence for the quantum $\mathfrak{g}$-KdV model, for a non-simply laced Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$. This is done by studying a meromorphic connection with values in the Langlands dual algebra of the affine Lie algebra ${\mathfrak{g}}^{(1)}$, and constructing the relevant $Ψ$-system among subdominant solutions. We then use the $Ψ$-system to prove that the generalized spectral determinants satisfy the Bethe Ansatz equations of the quantum $\mathfrak{g}$-KdV model. We also consider generalized Airy functions for twisted Kac--Moody algebras and we construct new explici…
Lie and Q-conditional symmetries of the classical three-component diffusive Lotka - Volterra system in the case of one space variable are studied. The group-classification problems for finding Lie symmetries and Q-conditional symmetries of the first type are completely solved. Notably, non-Lie symmetries (Q-conditional symmetry operators) for a multi-component non-linear reaction-diffusion system are constructed for the first time. An example of non-Lie symmetry reduction for solving a biologically motivated problem is presented.
The Lie symmetries for a class of systems of evolution equations are studied. The evolution equations are defined in a bimetric space with two Riemannian metrics corresponding to the space of the independent and dependent variables of the differential equations. The exact relation of the Lie symmetries with the collineations of the bimetric space is determined
This letter investigates the Lie point symmetries and conserved quantities of the Lagrangian systems on time scales, which unify the Lie symmetries of the two cases for the continuous and the discrete Lagrangian systems. By defining the infinitesimal transformations' generators and using the invariance of differential equations under infinitesimal transformations, the determining equations of the Lie symmetries on time scales are established. Then the structure equations and the form of conserved quantities with delta derivatives are obtained. The letter also gives brief discussion on the Lie …
We demonstrate a simplification of some recent works on the classification of the Lie symmetries for a quadratic equation of Liénard type. We observe that the problem could have been resolved more simply.
We investigate the relation of the Lie point symmetries for the geodesic equations with the collineations of decomposable spacetimes. We review previous results in the literature on the Lie point symmetries of the geodesic equations and we follow a previous proposed geometric construction approach for the symmetries of differential equations. In this study we prove that the projective collineations of a $\left( n+1\right) \,$% -dimensional decomposable Riemannian space are the Lie point symmetries for geodesic equations of the $n$-dimensional subspace. We demonstrate the application of our res…
We present an algorithm for determining the Lie point symmetries of differential equations on fixed non transforming lattices, i.e. equations involving both continuous and discrete independent variables. The symmetries of a specific integrable discretization of the Krichever-Novikov equation, the Toda lattice and Toda field theory are presented as examples of the general method.
A brief review of the extremal projector method for Lie symmetries (Lie algebras and superalgebras as well as their quantum analogs) is given. A history of its discovery and some simplest applications are presented.
In [Solving second order ordinary differential equations by extending the Prelle-Singer method, J. Phys. A: Math.Gen., 34, 3015-3024 (2001)] we defined a function (we called S) associated to a rational second order ordinary differential equation (rational 2ODE) that is linked to the search of an integrating factor. In this work we investigate the relation between these $S$-functions and the Lie symmetries of a rational 2ODE. Based on this relation we can construct a semi-algorithmic method to find the Lie symmetries of a 2ODE even in the case where it presents no Lie point symmetries.
We determine the Lie point symmetries of the Schrödinger and the Klein Gordon equations in a general Riemannian space. It is shown that these symmetries are related with the homothetic and the conformal algebra of the metric of the space respectively. We consider the kinematic metric defined by the classical Lagrangian and show how the Lie point symmetries of the Schrödinger equation and the Klein Gordon equation are related with the Noether point symmetries of this Lagrangian. The general results are applied to two practical problems a. The classification of all two and three dimensional pote…
