We propose a scheme of spin transistor using a $T$-shaped structure with local Rashba interaction. A wide antiresonance energy gap appears due to the interplay of two types of interference, the Fano-Rashba interference and the structure interference. A large current from the gap area can be obtained via changing the Rashba strength and/or the length of the sidearm by using gate voltage. The robustness of the antiresonance gap against strong disorder is demonstrated and shows the feasibility of this structure for the real application.
We study ballistic transport of spin-polarized electrons through quantum wires in which the strength of the Rashba spin-orbit interaction (SOI) is spatially modulated. Subband mixing, due to SOI, between the two lowest subbands is taken into account. Simplified approximate expressions for the transmission are obtained for electron energies close to the bottom of the first subband and near the value for which anticrossing of the two lowest subbands occurs. In structures with periodically varied SOI strength, {\it square-wave} modulation on the spin transmission is found when only one subband is…
A scheme for a spin-polarized current separator is proposed by studying the spin-dependent electron transport of a fork-shaped nanostructure with Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC), connected to three leads with the same width. It is found that two spin-polarized currents are of the same magnitude but opposite polarizations can be generated simultaneously in the two output leads when the spin-unpolarized electrons injected from the input lead. The underlying physics is revealed to originate from the different spin-dependent conductance caused by the effects of Rashba SOC and the geometrical stru…
We study the phenomenon of adiabatic quantum charge pumping in systems supporting fractionally charged fermionic bound states, in two different setups. The first quantum pump setup consists of a charge-density-modulated quantum wire, and the second one is based on a semiconducting nanowire with Rashba spin-orbit interaction, in the presence of a spatially oscillating magnetic field. In both these quantum pumps transport is investigated in a N-X-N geometry, with the system of interest (X) connected to two normal-metal leads (N), and the two pumping parameters are the strengths of the effective …
We investigate the spin-resolved transport in a two-terminal zigzag graphene nanoribbon device with two independent gate induced Rashba spin-orbit coupling regions and in the presence of strain. By employing a recursive Green's function technique to the tight-binding model for the graphene nanoribbon, we calculate the spin-resolved conductance of the system. We show that by switching the sign of one of the gates it is possible to select which spin component will be transmitted. Moreover, our results show that an uniaxial strain applied to the nanoribbon plays a significant role in the transpor…
We investigate the transport properties of ballistic quantum wires in the presence of Zeeman spin splittings and a spatially inhomogeneous Rashba interaction. The Zeeman interaction is extended along the wire and produces gaps in the energy spectrum which allow electron propagation only for spinors lying along a certain direction. For spins in the opposite direction the waves are evanescent far away from the Rashba region, which plays the role of the scattering center. The most interesting case occurs when the magnetic field is perpendicular to the Rashba field. Then, the spins of the asymptot…
We study the ground-state properties of electrons confined to a quantum wire and subject to a smoothly modulated Rashba spin-orbit coupling. When the period of the modulation becomes commensurate with the band filling, the Rashba coupling drives a quantum phase transition to a nonmagnetic insulating state. Using bosonization and a perturbative renormalization group approach, we find that this state is robust against electron-electron interactions. The gaps to charge- and spin excitations scale with the amplitude of the Rashba modulation with a common interaction-dependent exponent. An estimate…
We study electron transport through waveguides (WGs) in which the strengths of the Rashba ($α$) and Dresselhaus ($β$) terms of the spin-orbit interaction (SOI) vary in space. Subband mixing, due to lateral confinement, is taken into account only between the two first subbands. For sufficiently narrow WGs the transmission $T$ exhibits a square-like shape as a function of $α$ or $β$. Particular attention is paid to the case of equal SOI strengths, $α=β$, for which spin-flip processes are expected to decrease. The transmission exhibits resonances as a function of the length of a SOI-free region s…
We study an atomic chain in the presence of modulated charge potential and modulated Rashba spin-orbit coupling (RSOC) of equal period. We show that for commensurate periodicities $λ=4 n$ with integer $n$, the three-dimensional synthetic space obtained by sliding the two phases of the charge potential and RSOC features a topological nodal line semimetal protected by an antiunitary particle-hole symmetry. The location and shape of the nodal lines strongly depend on the relative amplitude between the charge potential and RSOC.
We present a theoretical study of magnetoplasmon spectrum of a two-dimensional electron gas in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit interaction (RSOI), one-dimensional weak electric modulation and a perpendicular magnetic field. The intra-Landau-band magnetoplasmon spectrum is determined in the presence of spin-orbit interaction within the self consistent field approach at finite temperature. Due to Rashba effect, the spin of finite-momentum electrons feels a magnetic field perpendicular to the electron momentum in the inversion plane. The magnetoplasmon spectrum of the modulated two-dimensional …
We study the electrical transport properties of a two-dimensional electron gas with the Rashba spin-orbit interaction in presence of a constant perpendicular magnetic field $(B_0 \hat z)$ which is weakly modulated by ${\bf B_1} = B_1 \cos (q x) \hat z$, where $B_1 \ll B_0 $ and $q = 2 π/a $ with $a$ is the modulation period. We obtain the analytical expressions of the diffusive conductivities for spin-up and spin-down electrons. The conductivities for spin-up and spin-down electrons oscillate with different frequencies and produce beating patterns in the amplitude of the Weiss and Shubnikov-de…
The generation of spin current and spin polarization in a 2DEG structure is studied in the presence of Dresselhaus and Rashba spin-orbit couplings (SOC), the strength of the latter being modulated in time by an ac gate voltage. By means of the non-Abelian gauge field approach, we established the relation between the Lorentz spin force and the spin current in the SOC system, and showed that the longitudinal component of the spin force induces a transverse spin current. For a constant (time-invariant) Rashba system, we recover the universal spin Hall conductivity of $\frac e{8π}$, derived previo…
Spin interference due to Rashba spin-orbit interaction (SOI) in a ballistic two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) ring conductor submitted to a bias voltage is investigated theoretically. We calculate the scattering matrices and differential conductance with lead-ring junction coupling as an adjustable parameter. Due to the interference of electronic waves traversing the ring, the differential conductance modulated by both bias voltage and SOI exhibits a diamond-shaped pattern, thus termed as \ti{Rashba diamond}. This feature offers a supplementary degree of freedom to manipulate phase interfere…
We consider transport properties of a single edge of a two-dimensional topological insulators, in presence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling, driven by two external time-dependent voltages and connected to a thin superconductor. We focus on the case of a train of Lorentzian-shaped pulses, which are known to generate coherent single-electron excitations in two-dimensional electron gas, and prove that they are minimal excitations for charge transport also in helical edge states, even in the presence of spin-orbit interaction. Importantly, these properties of Lorentzian-shaped pulses can be tested co…
We theoretically investigate photoinduced phenomena induced by time-periodic driving fields in two-dimensional electron gases under perpendicular magnetic fields with Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Using perturbation theory, we provide analytical results for the Floquet-Landau energy spectrum appearing due to THz radiation. By employing the resulting photo-modulated states, we compute the dynamical evolution of the spin polarization function for an initially prepared coherent state. We find that the interplay of the magnetic field, Rashba spin-orbit interaction and THz radiation can lead to inver…
The generation of spin current and spin polarization in 2DEG Rashba system is considered, in which the spin-orbital coupling (SOC) is modulated by an ac gate voltage. By using non-Abelian gauge field method, we show the presence of an additional electric field. This field induces a spin current generated even in the presence of impurity scattering and is related to the time-modulation of the Rashba SOC strength. In addition, the spin precession can be controlled by modulating the modulation frequency of the Rashba SOC strength. It is shown that at high modulation frequency, the precessional mo…
It was recently shown that a spatially modulated Rashba spin-orbit coupling in a quantum wire drives a transition from a metallic to an insulating state when the wave number of the modulation becomes commensurate with the Fermi wave length of the electrons in the wire. It was suggested that the effect may be put to practical use in a future spin transistor design. In the present article we revisit the problem and present a detailed analysis of the underlying physics. First, we explore how the build-up of charge density wave correlations in the quantum wire due to the periodic gate configuratio…
We propose and analyze theoretically a one-dimensional solid-state electronic setup that operates as a topological charge pump in the complete absence of superimposed oscillating local voltages. The system consists of a semiconducting narrow channel with strong Rashba spin-orbit interaction patterned in a mesoscale serpentine shape. A rotating planar magnetic field serves as the external ac perturbation, and cooperates with the Rashba spin-orbit interaction, which is modulated by the geometric curvature of the electronic channel to realize the topological pumping protocol originally introduced…
We present two theoretical schemes for spin filters in one-dimensional semiconductor quantum wires with spatially modulated Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC) as well as weak magnetic potential. For case I, the SOC is periodic and the weak magnetic potential is applied uniformly along the wire. Full spin polarizations with opposite signs are obtained within two separated energy intervals. For case II, the weak magnetic potential is periodic while the SOC is uniform. An ideal negative/positive switching effect for spin polarization is realized by tuning the strength of SOC. The roles of SOC, magn…
We report on our investigation of the influence of Bychkov-Rashba spin-orbit interaction (SOI) on the incompressible Laughlin state. We find that experimentally obtainable values of the spin-orbit coupling strength can induce as much as a 25% increase in the quasiparticle-quasihole gap Eg at low magnetic fields in InAs, thereby increasing the stability of the liquid state. The SOI-modulated enhancement of Eg is also significant for filling factors 1/5 and 1/7, where the FQH state is usually weak. This raises the intriguing possibility of tuning, via the SO coupling strength, the liquid to soli…
We developed the theory of electronic properties of semiconductor quantum rings with the Rashba spin-orbit interaction irradiated by an off-resonant high-frequency electromagnetic field (dressing field). Within the Floquet theory of periodically driven quantum systems, it is demonstrated that the dressing field drastically modifies all electronic characteristics of the rings, including spin-orbit coupling, effective electron mass and optical response. Particularly, the present effect paves the way to controlling the spin polarization of electrons with light in prospective ring-shaped spintroni…
We discuss the transport properties of a quantum spin-Hall insulator with sizable Rashba spin-orbit coupling in a disk geometry. The presence of topologically protected helical edge states allows for the control and manipulation of spin polarized currents: when ferromagnetic leads are coupled to the quantum spin-Hall device, the ballistic conductance is modulated by the Rashba strength. Therefore, by tuning the Rashba interaction via an all-electric gating, it is possible to control the spin polarization of injected electrons.
Recently experiments have shown very significant spin activity in biological molecules such as DNA, proteins, oligopeptides and aminoacids. Such molecules have in common their chiral structure, time reversal symmetry and the absence of magnetic exchange interactions. The spin activity is then assumed to be due to either the pure Spin-orbit (SO) interaction or SO coupled to the presence of strong local sources of electric fields. Here we derive an analytical tight-binding Hamiltonian model for Oligopeptides that contemplates both intrinsic SO and Rashba interaction induced by hydrogen bond. We …
We study theoretically transport through a semiconducting nanowire (NW) in the presence of Rashba spin orbit interaction, uniform magnetic field, and spatially modulated magnetic field. The system is fully gapped, and the interplay between the spin orbit interaction and the magnetic fields leads to fractionally charged fermion (FF) bound states of Jackiw-Rebbi type at each end of the nanowire. We investigate the transport and noise behavior of a N/NW/N system, where the wire is contacted by two normal leads (N), and we look for possible signatures that could help in the experimental detection …
A planar ballistic structure is predicted to be highly effective in filtering electron spin from an unpolarized source into two output fluxes with the opposite and practically pure spin polarizations. The operability of the proposed device relies on the peculiar spin-dependent transmission properties of the T-shaped connector in the presence of the Rashba spin-orbit interaction as well as the difference in the dynamic phase gains of the two alternative paths around the ring resonator through upper and lower branches for even and odd eigenmodes.
We investigate numerically the spin polarization of the current in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit interaction in a T-shaped conductor proposed by A.A. Kiselev and K.W. Kim (Appl. Phys. Lett. {\bf 78} 775 (2001)). The recursive Green function method is used to calculate the three terminal spin dependent transmission probabilities. We focus on single-channel transport and show that the spin polarization becomes nearly 100 % with a conductance close to $e^{2}/h$ for sufficiently strong spin-orbit coupling. This is interpreted by the fact that electrons with opposite spin states are deflected i…
We investigate the influence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling in a parabolic nanowire modulated by longitudinal periodic potential. The modulation potential can be obtained from realistically grown supperlattices (SLs). Our study shows that the Rashba spin-orbit interaction induces the level crossing point in the parabolic nanowire SLs. We estimate large anticrossing width (approximately 117 $μeV$) between singlet-triplet states. We study the phonon and electromagnetic field mediated spin transition rates in the parabolic nanowire SLs. We report that the phonon mediated spin transition rate is se…
We examine electric response of a linearly polarized light normally shed on a cross-shaped quasi 2-dimensional InGaAs/InAlAs system with structure inversion asymmetry. The photo-excited conduction electrons carry a pure spin current with in-plane spin polarization due to the Rashba spin-orbit interaction. We use Landauer-Büttiker formalism to show that this spin current induces two inward or outward transverse charge currents, which are observable in experiments. This effect may serve as an experimental probe of certain types of spin current.
A general form of the Hamiltonian for electrons confined to a curved one-dimensional (1D) channel with spin-orbit coupling (SOC) linear in momentum is rederived and is applied to a U-shaped channel. Discretizing the derived continuous 1D Hamiltonian to a tight-binding version, the Landauer-Keldysh formalism (LKF) for nonequilibrium transport can be applied. Spin transport through the U-channel based on the LKF is compared with previous quantum mechanical approaches. The role of a curvature-induced geometric potential which was previously neglected in the literature of the ring issue is also re…
We study spin Hall effect in a three terminal Y-shaped device in presence of tunable spin-orbit (SO) interactions via Landauer-Büttiker formalism. We have evolved a fabrication technique for creating different angular separation between the two arms of the Y-shaped device so as to investigate the effect of angular width on the spin Hall conductance (SHC). A smaller angular separation yields a larger conductance. Also arbitrary orientation of the spin quantization axes yields interesting three dimensional contour maps for the SHC corresponding to different angular separation of the Y-shaped dev…
Quantum wires with periodic local Rashba spin-orbit couplings are proposed for a higher performance of spin field-effect transistor. Fano-Rashba quantum interference due to the spin-dependent modulated structure gives rise to a broad energy range of vanishingly small transmission. Tuning Rashba spin-orbit couplings can provide the on- or off-currents with extremely large on/off current ratios even in the presence of a strong disorder.
Spin transport property of polarization induced two-dimensional electron gas channel formed in the central vertical plane of a wedge-shaped \textit{c}-oriented GaN nanowall is investigated theoretically. Since the confining potential preserves the spatial symmetry between the conduction and valence band, the Rashba effect is suppressed in this system even when the shape of the wedge is asymmetric. It has been found that the relaxation of the electron spin oriented along the direction of the confinement via D'yakonov-Perel' (DP) mechanism, which is the dominant process of relaxation in this hig…
Edelstein and spin Hall effect response functions for a two-dimensional (2D) system of pseudospin-1 particles is investigated. These two response functions denoted by $ σ_{SH} $ and $ σ_{EE} $ have been analyzed in a pseudospin-1 particle system in the presence of the Rashba-type spin-orbit interaction using the Kubo-Streda technique and vertex corrections with non-magnetic impurities. Then, for a given range of the Rashba coupling, response functions of the spin Hall effect (SHE) and Edelstein effect (EE) have been estimated at various energy gaps and Fermi energies. Results indicate that in …
The spin dynamics in a quantum wire with a Rashba spin orbit interaction (SOI) is shown to be controllable via sub-picosecond electromagnetic pulses shaped appropriately. If the light polarization vector is along the wire's direction, the carriers experience a momentum boost while the phase coherence in different spin channels is maintained, a fact exploitable to control the speed of a photo-driven spin field effect transistor. A photon pulse with a polarization vector perpendicular to the wire results in a spin precession which is comparable to that due to the Rashba SOI and is tunable by the…
We show that the Landau bands obtained in a two-dimensional lateral semiconductor superlattice with spin-orbit coupling (SOC) of the Rashba/Dresselhaus type, linear in the electron momentum, placed in a tilted magnetic field, do not follow the symmetry of the spatial modulation. Moreover, this phenomenology is found to depend on the relative tilt of magnetic field and on the SOC type: a) when only Rashba SOC exists and the magnetic field is tilted in the direction of the superlattice b) Dresselhaus SOC exists and the magnetic field is tilted in the direction perpendicular to the superlattice. …
The tunability of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling allows to build semiconductor heterostructures with space modulated coupling intensities. We show that a wire-shaped spin-orbit modulation in a quantum well can support propagating electronic states inside the wire only for a certain spin orientation and, therefore, it acts as an effective spin transmission guide for this particular spin orientation.
Transport properties of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) are studied in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field $B$, of a {\it weak} one-dimensional (1D) periodic potential modulation, and of the spin-orbit interaction (SOI) described only by the Rashba term. In the absence of the modulation the SOI mixes the spin-up and spin-down states of neighboring Landau levels into two new, unequally spaced energy branches. The levels of these branches broaden into bands in the presence of the modulation and their bandwidths oscillate with the field $B$. Evaluated at the Fermi energy, the $n$…
We derive an effective continuum model for describing the propagation of electrons in ballistic one-dimensional curved nanostructure which are marked by a strong interplay of spin-orbital degrees of freedom due to local electronic states with $d-$orbital symmetry, atomic spin-orbit and orbital Rashba couplings. We demonstrate how a planar inhomogeneous spatial curvature of the nanochannel can generate both spin and orbital textures represented through loops on the corresponding Bloch spheres. In particular, we employ the paradigmatic case of an elliptically shaped quantum ring to investigate t…
Several spin-orbit effects allow performing spin to charge inter-conversion: the spin Hall effects, the Rashba effect, or the spin-momentum locking in topological insulators. Here we focus on how the detection of this inter-conversion can be made electrically, using three different cross-shaped nanostructures. We apply these measurement configurations to the case of the spin Hall effect in Pt, using CoFe electrodes to detect and inject spins. Both the direct and inverse spin Hall effect can be detected, with a spin Hall signal up to two order of magnitude higher than that of nonlocal measureme…
Diluted oxide interface of LaAl1-xMnxO/SrTiO3 (LAMO/STO) provides a new way of tuning the ground states of the interface between the two band insulators of LAO and STO from metallic/superconducting to highly insulating. Increasing the Mn doping level (x) leads to a delicate control of the carrier density as well as a raise in the electron mobility and spin polarization. Herein, we demonstrate a tunable Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and spin polarization of LAMO/STO (0.2 <= x <= 0.3) by applying a back gate. The presence of SOC causes the splitting of energy band into two branches by a spin …
We explore theoretically the influence of Fano interference in the so-called Majorana oscillations in a T-shaped hybrid setup formed by a quantum dot (QD) placed between conducting leads and side-coupled to a topological superconducting nanowire (TSNW) hosting zero-energy Majorana bound states (MBSs) at the ends. Differential conductance as a function of the external magnetic field reveals oscillatory behavior. Both the shape and amplitude of the oscillations depend on the bias-voltage, degree of MBSs non-locality and Fano parameter of the system determining the regime of interference. When th…
We investigate the spin diffusion and transport in a graphene monolayer on SiO$_2$ substrate by means of the microscopic kinetic spin Bloch equation approach. The substrate causes a strong Rashba spin-orbit coupling field $\sim 0.15$ meV, which might be accounted for by the impurities initially present in the substrate or even the substrate-induced structure distortion. By surface chemical doping with Au atoms, this Rashba spin-orbit coupling is further strengthened as the adatoms can distort the graphene lattice from $sp^2$ to $sp^3$ bonding structure. By fitting the Au doping dependence of s…
We propose purely electric manipulation of spin qubits by means of the spin-orbit interaction (SOI) {\it without magnetic field or magnets} in a double-quantum dot. All the unitary transformations can be constructed by the time-dependent Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction between the two spins, which arises from the Rashba SOI modulated by electric field. As a few demonstrations, we study both analytically and numerically the three operations, i.e., (A) the spin initialization, (B) the two-spin rotation in the opposite directions, and (C) the two-spin rotation in the same direction. The effects …
The conventional unpolarized current injected into a {\em quantum-coherent} semiconductor ring attached to two external leads can be modulated from perfect conductor to perfect insulator limit via Rashba spin-orbit (SO) coupling. This requires that ballistic propagation of electrons, whose spin precession is induced by the Aharonov-Casher phase, takes place through a single conducting channel ensuring that electronic quantum state remains a pure separable one in the course of transport. We study the fate of such spin interference effects as more than one orbital conducting channel becomes avai…
We investigate a novel way to manipulate the spin polarized transmission in a two terminal zigzag graphene nanoribbon in presence of Rashba spin-orbit (SO) interaction with circular shaped cavity engraved into it. A usual technique to control the spin polarized transport behaviour of a nanoribbon can be achieved by tuning the strength of the SO coupling, while we show that an efficient engineering of the spin polarized transport properties can also be done via cavities of different radii engraved in the nanoribbon. Simplicity of the technique in creating such cavities in the experiments render…
The intrinsic spin-Hall effect in hexagon-shaped samples is investigated. To take into account the spin-orbit couplings and to fit the hexagon edges, we derive the triangular version of the tight-binding model for the linear Rashba [Sov. Phys. Solid State 2, 1109 (1960)] and Dresselhaus [Phys. Rev. 100, 580 (1955)] [001] Hamiltonians, which allow direct application of the Landauer-Keldysh non-equilibrium Green function formalism to calculating the local spin density within the hexagonal sample. Focusing on the out-of-plane component of spin, we obtain the geometry-dependent spin-Hall accumulat…
The spin-orbit interaction is the key element for electrically tunable spin qubits. Here we probe the effect of cubic Rashba spin-orbit interaction on mixing of the spin states by investigating singlet-triplet oscillations in a planar Ge hole double quantum dot. By varying the magnetic field direction we find an intriguing transformation of the funnel into a butterfly-shaped pattern. Landau-Zener sweeps disentangle the Zeeman mixing effect from the spin-orbit induced coupling and show that large singlet-triplet avoided crossings do not imply a strong spin-orbit interaction. Our work emphasizes…
The helical distribution of the electronic density in chiral molecules, such as DNA and bacteriorhodopsin, has been suggested to induce a spin-orbit coupling interaction that may lead to the so-called chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect. Key ingredients for the theoretical modelling are, in this context, the helically shaped potential of the molecule and, concomitantly, a Rashba-like spin-orbit coupling due to the appearance of a magnetic field in the electron reference frame. Symmetries of these models clearly play a crucial role in explaining the observed effect, but a thorough …
We report a first principles theoretical investigation of quantum transport in monolayer WSe2 field effect transistor (FET). Due to a strong spin-orbit interaction (SOI) and the atomic structure of the two-dimensional (2D) lattice, monolayer WSe2 has an interesting electronic structure that exhibits Zeeman-like up-down spin texture near the K and K' points of the Brillouin zone. In a FET, the gate electric field induces an extra, externally tunable SOI that re-orients the spins into a Rashba-like texture thereby realizing electric control of the spin. Quantum transport is modulated by the spin…
We describe the simultaneous effects of the spin-orbit (SO) perturbation and a magnetic field $B$ on a disk shaped quantum dot (QD). {As it is known the} combination of electrostatic forces among the $N$ electrons confined in the QD and the Pauli principle can induce a spin polarization when $B$ (applied in the direction orthogonal to the QD) is above a threshold value. In the presence of an electric field parallel to $B$, coupled to the spin $ S $ by a Rashba term, we demonstrate that a symmetry breaking takes place: we can observe it by analyzing the splitting of the levels belonging to an u…
We investigate the electron transport through a mesoscopic ring side-coupled with a quantum dot(QD) in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit(SO) interaction. It is shown that both the Fano resonance and the spin interference effects play important roles in the electron transport properties. As the QD level is around the Fermi energy, the total conductance shows typical Fano resonance line shape. By applying an electrical gate voltage to the QD, the total transmission through the system can be strongly modulated. By threading the mesoscopic ring with a magnetic flux, the time-reversal symmetry of t…
Highly spin selective transport of electrons through a helically shaped electrostatic potential is demonstrated in the frame of a minimal model approach. The effect is significant even in the case of weak spin-orbit coupling. Two main factors determine the selectivity, an unconventional Rashba- like spin-orbit interaction, reflecting the helical symmetry of the system, and a weakly dispersive electronic band of the helical system. The weak electronic coupling, associated with the small dispersion, leads to a low mobility of the charges in the system and allows even weak spin-orbit interactions…
We apply a circularly and linearly polarized terahertz field on a monolayer of graphene taking into account spin-orbit interactions of the intrinsic and Rashba type. It turns out that the field can not only be used to induce a gap in the energy spectrum, but also to close an existing gap due to the different reaction of the spin components on circularly polarized light. Signatures of spin-orbit coupling on the density of states of the driven system can be observed even for energies where the static density of states is independent of spin-orbit interactions. Furthermore it is shown that the ti…
We explore a scheme for engineering a one-dimensional spinless p-wave superconductor hosting unpaired Majorana zero-energy modes, using an all-electric setup with a spin-orbit coupled quantum wire in proximity to an s-wave superconductor. The required crossing of the Fermi level by a single spin-split energy band is ensured by employing a periodically modulated Rashba interaction, which, assisted by electron-electron interactions and a uniform Dresselhaus interaction, opens a gap at two of the spin-orbit shifted Fermi points. While an implementation in a hybrid superconductor-semiconductor dev…
