The generation of spin current and spin polarization in 2DEG Rashba system is considered, in which the spin-orbital coupling (SOC) is modulated by an ac gate voltage. By using non-Abelian gauge field method, we show the presence of an additional electric field. This field induces a spin current generated even in the presence of impurity scattering and is related to the time-modulation of the Rashba SOC strength. In addition, the spin precession can be controlled by modulating the modulation frequency of the Rashba SOC strength. It is shown that at high modulation frequency, the precessional motion is suppressed so that the electron spin polarization can be sustained in the 2DEG
Thermoelectric transport phenomena in a single-level quantum dot coupled to ferromagnetic leads are considered theoretically in the Kondo regime. The dot is described by the Anderson model with Rashba type spin-orbit interaction. The finite-U mean field slave boson technique is used to describe the transport characteristics, like heat conductance, thermopower, thermoelectric efficiency (figure of merit). The role of quantum interference effects in thermoelectric parameters is also analyzed.
We theoretically investigate the spin-dependent Seebeck effect in an Aharonov-Bohm mesoscopic ring in the presence of both Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interactions under magnetic flux perpendicular to the ring. We apply the Green's function method to calculate the spin Seebeck coefficient employing the tight-binding Hamiltonian. It is found that the spin Seebeck coefficient is proportional to the slope of the energy-dependent transmission coefficients. We study the strong dependence of spin Seebeck coefficient on the Fermi energy, magnetic flux, strength of spin-orbit coupling, and tempe…
We consider Rashba spin-orbit effects on spin transport driven by an electric field in semiconductor quantum wells. We derive spin diffusion equations that are valid when the mean free path and the Rashba spin-orbit interaction vary on length scales larger than the mean free path in the weak spin-orbit coupling limit. From these general diffusion equations, we derive boundary conditions between regions of different spin-orbit couplings. We show that spin injection is feasible when the electric field is perpendicular to the boundary between two regions. When the electric field is parallel to th…
Spin-dependent heat and thermoelectric currents in a quantum ring with Rashba spin-orbit interaction placed in a photon cavity are theoretically calculated. The quantum ring is coupled to two external leads with different temperatures. In a resonant regime, with the ring structure in resonance with the photon field, the heat and the thermoelectric currents can be controlled by the Rashba spin-orbit interaction. The heat current is suppressed in the presence of the photon field due to contribution of the two-electron and photon replica states to the transport while the thermoelectric current is…
Magnetization dynamics in a ferromagnet can induce a spin-dependent electric field through spin motive force. Spin current generated by the spin-dependent electric field can in turn modify the magnetization dynamics through spin-transfer torque. While this feedback effect is usually weak and thus ignored, we predict that in Rashba spin-orbit coupling systems with large Rashba parameter $α_{\rm R}$, the coupling generates the spin-dependent electric field [$\pm(α_{\rm R}m_e/e\hbar) (\vhat{z}\times \partial \vec{m}/\partial t)]$, which can be large enough to modify the magnetization dynamics sig…
We investigate theoretically the spin-dependent electron transport in a Rashba quantum wire with rough edges. The charge and spin conductances are calculated as function of the electron energy or the wire length by adopting the spinresolved lattice Green function method. For a single disordered Rashba wire, it is found that the charge conductance quantization is destroyed by the edge disorder. However, a nonzero spin conductance can be generated and its amplitude can be manipulated by the wire length, which is attributed to the broken structure symmetries and the spin-dependent quantum interfe…
The generation of spin current and spin polarization in a 2DEG structure is studied in the presence of Dresselhaus and Rashba spin-orbit couplings (SOC), the strength of the latter being modulated in time by an ac gate voltage. By means of the non-Abelian gauge field approach, we established the relation between the Lorentz spin force and the spin current in the SOC system, and showed that the longitudinal component of the spin force induces a transverse spin current. For a constant (time-invariant) Rashba system, we recover the universal spin Hall conductivity of $\frac e{8π}$, derived previo…
We have performed density functional theory calculation and tight binging analysis in order to investigate the mechanism for the giant Rashba-type spin splitting (RSS) observed in Bi/Ag(111). We find that local orbital angular momentum induces momentum and spin dependent charge distribution which results in spin-dependent hopping. We show that the spin-dependent interatomic-hopping in Bi/Ag(111) works as a strong effective field and induces the giant RSS, indicating that the giant RSS is driven by hopping, not by a uniform electric field. The effective field from the hopping energy difference …
In this work, we have studied the spin-dependent ballistic transport and anomalous quantum tunnelling in Bilayer Graphene (BLG) hybrid connected to two Rashba-Zeeman (RZ) leads under an external electric biasing. We investigated the transmission and conductance for the proposed system using scattering matrix formalism and Landauer - Buttiker formula considering a double delta-like barrier under a set of experimentally viable parameters. We found that the transmission characteristics are notably different for up and down spin incoming electrons depending upon the strength of magnetization. More…
Within an effective Dirac theory the low-energy dispersions of monolayer graphene in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling and spin-degenerate bilayer graphene are described by formally identical expressions. We explore implications of this correspondence for transport by choosing chiral tunneling through pn and pnp junctions as a concrete example. A real-space Green's function formalism based on a tight-binding model is adopted to perform the ballistic transport calculations, which cover and confirm previous theoretical results based on the Dirac theory. Chiral tunneling in monolayer gra…
Magnetic focussing of charge carriers in two-dimensional systems provides a solid state version of a mass spectrometer. In the presence of a spin-orbit interaction, the first focussing peak splits into two spin dependent peaks, allowing focussing to be used to measure spin polarisation and the strength of the spin-orbit interaction. In hole systems, the k^3 dependence of the Rashba spin-orbit term allows the spatial separation of spins to be changed in-situ using a voltage applied to an overall top gate. Here we demonstrate that this can be used to control the splitting of the magnetic focussi…
We predict two spin-dependent transport phenomena in two-dimensional electron systems, which are induced by spatially fluctuating Rashba spin-orbit interaction. When the electron gas is magnetized, the random Rashba interaction leads to the anomalous Hall effect. An example of such a system is a narrow-gap magnetic semiconductor-based symmetric quantum well. We show that the anomalous Hall conductivity reveals a strongly nonlinear dependence on the magnetization, decreasing exponentially at large spin density. We also show that electron scattering from a fluctuating Rashba field in a two-dimen…
We have studied spin-depend electron tunnelling through the Rashba barrier in a monolayer graphene lattice. The transfer matrix method, have been employed to obtain the spin dependent transport properties of the chiral particles. It is shown that graphene sheets in presence of Rashba spin-orbit barrier will act as an electron spin- inverter.
Quantum transport in semiconductor nanostructures can be described theoretically in terms of the propagation and scattering of electron probability waves. Within this approach, elements of a phase-coherent electric circuit play a role similar to quantum-optical devices that can be characterised by scattering matrices. Electronic analogues of well-know optical interferometers have been fabricated and used to study special features of charge carriers in solids. We present results from our theoretical investigation into the interplay between spin precession and quantum interference in an electron…
A scheme for a spin-polarized current separator is proposed by studying the spin-dependent electron transport of a fork-shaped nanostructure with Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC), connected to three leads with the same width. It is found that two spin-polarized currents are of the same magnitude but opposite polarizations can be generated simultaneously in the two output leads when the spin-unpolarized electrons injected from the input lead. The underlying physics is revealed to originate from the different spin-dependent conductance caused by the effects of Rashba SOC and the geometrical stru…
Within the Kubo formalism, we estimate the spin-Hall conductivity in a two-dimensional electron gas with Rashba spin-orbit interaction and study its variation as a function of disorder strength and system size. The numerical algorithm employed in the calculation is based on the direct numerical integration of the time-dependent Schrodinger equation in a spin-dependent variant of the particle source method. We find that the spin-precession length, L_s controlled by the strength of the Rashba coupling, establishes the critical lengthscale that marks the significant reduction of the spin-Hall con…
Numerical methods are developed in the quantum transport calculations for electron in the waveguides with spin-orbital (Rashba) interaction. The methods are based on a hybrid mode-matching scheme in which the wavefunctions are expressed as the superposition of eigenmodes in the lead regions and in the device region the wavefunction is expressed on the discrete basis. Two versions are presented for the lead without and with the Rashba interaction. In the latter case the eigenmodes are obtained from a quadratic eigenproblem calculation. These methods are suitable for the systems with variable ge…
We calculate orbital spin-dependent magnetization in a two-dimensional electron gas with spin-orbit interaction of Rashba type. Such an orbital magnetization is admitted by the time-reversal symmetry of the system, and gives rise to spin currents when the system is not in thermal equilibrium. The theoretical approach is based on the linear response theory and the Matsubara Green's function formalism. To account for the spin-resolved orbital magnetization a spin-dependent vector potential has been introduced. The spin currents which appear in thermal nonequilibrium due to the spin-resolved orbi…
We consider a single electron confined within a quantum wire in a system of two electrostatically-induced QDs defined by nearby gates. The time-varying electric field, of single GHz frequency, perpendicular to the quantum wire, is used to induce the Rashba coupling and enable spin-dependent resonant tunneling of the electron between two adjacent potential wells with fidelity over 99.5%. This effect can be used for the high fidelity all-electrical electron-spin initialization or readout in the spin-based quantum computer. In contrast to other spin initialization methods, our technique can be pe…
We investigate numerically the spin polarization of the current in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit interaction in a T-shaped conductor proposed by A.A. Kiselev and K.W. Kim (Appl. Phys. Lett. {\bf 78} 775 (2001)). The recursive Green function method is used to calculate the three terminal spin dependent transmission probabilities. We focus on single-channel transport and show that the spin polarization becomes nearly 100 % with a conductance close to $e^{2}/h$ for sufficiently strong spin-orbit coupling. This is interpreted by the fact that electrons with opposite spin states are deflected i…
Our recent study [Phys. Rev. B 103, 085309 (2021)] verified the existence of $\bf{k}$-linear Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC) of two-dimensional hole gases in quantum wells (QWs) which originates from a combination of heavy-hole-light-hole (HH-LH) mixing and direct dipolar coupling to the external electric field. However, the Rashba SOC dependence on QW orientations remains unclear. Here, we explore this dependence on QW orientations and uncover an upper and lower bound to the orientation-dependent $\bf{k}$-linear Rashba SOC along the [110]- and [111]- crystalline directions by performing atom…
We investigate the influence of a perpendicular magnetic field on the spectral and spin properties of a ballistic quasi-one-dimensional electron system with Rashba effect. The magnetic field strongly alters the spin-orbit induced modification to the subband structure when the magnetic length becomes comparable to the lateral confinement. A new subband-dependent energy splitting at k=0 is found which can be much larger than the Zeeman splitting. This is due to the breaking of a combined spin orbital-parity symmetry.
The Rashba spin-orbit coupling in carbon nanotubes and its effect on spin-dependent transport properties are analyzed theoretically. We focus on clean non-interacting nanotubes with tunable number of subbands $N$. The peculiar band structure is shown to allow in principle for Datta-Das oscillatory behavior in the tunneling magnetoresistance as a function of gate voltage, despite the presence of multiple bands. We discuss the conditions for observing Datta-Das oscillations in carbon nanotubes.
We study the energy levels of non-interacting electrons confined to move in two-dimensional billiard regions and having a spin-dependent dynamics due to a finite Rashba spin splitting. The Green's function for such Rashba billiards is constructed analytically and used to find the area and perimeter contributions to the density of states, as well as the smooth counting function. We show that, in contrast to systems with spin-rotational invariance, Rashba billiards always possess a negative energy spectrum. A semi-classical analysis is presented to interpret the singular behavior of the density …
Linear conductance of graphene-based p-n junctions with Rashba spin-orbit coupling is considered theoretically. A square potential step is used to model the junctions, while the coupling is introduced in terms of the Kane-Mele model (C.L. Kane and E.J. Mele, Phys.Rev.Lett. 95, 226801(2005)). The main objective is a description of electronic transport in junctions where Rashba parameter is nonuniform. Such a nonuniformity can appear when graphene is asymmetrically covered with atomic layers, or when Rashba coupling is strongly dependent on electric field. It is shown that conductance is signifi…
We present calculations of the frequency-dependent spin susceptibility tensor of a two-dimensional electron gas with competing Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction. It is shown that the interplay between both types of spin-orbit coupling gives rise to an anisotropic spectral behavior of the spin density response function which is significantly different from that of vanishing Rashba or Dresselhaus case. Strong resonances are developed in the spin susceptibility as a consequence of the angular anisotropy of the energy spin-splitting. This characteristic optical modulable response may b…
Quasi--one dimensional edge channels are formed at the boundary of a two-dimensional electron system subject to a strong perpendicular magnetic field. We consider the effect of Rashba spin--orbit coupling, induced by structural inversion asymmetry, on their electronic and transport properties. Both our analytical and numerical results show that spin--split quantum--Hall edge channels exhibit properties analogous to that of Rashba--split quantum wires. Suppressed backscattering and a long spin life time render these edge channels an ideal system for observing voltage--controlled spin precession…
We study the scattering of an electron in a definite state of spin at an interface of an hybrid system with a Rashba spin-orbit coupling on one side. Out of the normal incidence the double refraction phenomenon appears, with one or two limit angles for the total reflection. We show that this double refraction gives rise to a spin-dependent conductance of a Quantum Point Contact separating a ferromagnet and a two dimensional electron gas. The birefringence allows the spin filtering with a single interface.
Motivated by recent experimental studies of thin-film devices containing a single ferromagnetic layer, we develop a quantum kinetic theory of current-induced magnetic torques in Rashba-model ferromagnets. We find that current-induced spin-densities that are responsible for the switching behavior are due most essentially to spin-dependent quasiparticle lifetimes and derive analytic expressions for relevant limits of a simple model. Quantitative model parameter estimates suggest that spin-orbit coupling in the adjacent metal normal magnetic layer plays an essential role in the strength of the sw…
Changes dopant ion concentrations in the sides of a symmetric quantum well are known to create a random Rashba-type spin-orbit coupling. Here we demonstrate that, as a consequence, a finite size spin-Hall effect is also present. Our numerical algorithm estimates the result of the Kubo formula for the spin-Hall conductivity, by using a tight-binding approximation of the Hamiltonian in the framework of a time-dependent Green's function formalism, well suited for very large systems.
We consider the dynamics of a quantum particle held in a lattice potential, and subjected to a time-dependent spin-orbit coupling. Tilting the lattice causes the particle to perform Bloch oscillations, and by suitably changing the Rashba interaction during its motion, the spin of the particle can be gradually rotated. Even if the Rashba coupling can only be altered by a small amount, large spin-rotations can be obtained by accumulating the rotation from successive oscillations. We show how the time-dependence of the spin-orbit coupling can be chosen to maximize the rotation per cycle, and thus…
We calculate the intrinsic spin Hall conductivity σ^{\mathrm{sH}} of a two-dimensional electron system within a generalized Rashba model, showing that it is, in general, finite and model-dependent. Considering arbitrary band dispersion, we find that σ^{\mathrm{sH}} in the presence of the linear-in-momentum spin-orbit coupling of the Rashba form does not vanish in the presence of impurities except for the precisely parabolic spectrum. We show, using the linear response Kubo formalism, how the exact cancellation happens for the quadratic dispersion, and why it does not occur in general. We deriv…
The combination of Rashba spin-orbit coupling and potential disorder induces a random current operator for the edge states of a 2D topological insulator. We prove that charge transport through such an edge is ballistic at any temperature, with or without Luttinger liquid interactions. The solution exploits a mapping to a spin 1/2 in a time-dependent field that preserves the projection along one randomly undulating component (integrable dynamics). Our result is exact and rules out random Rashba backscattering as a source of temperature-dependent transport, absent integrability-breaking terms.
Rashba effect describes how electrons moving in an electric field experience a momentum dependent magnetic field that couples to the electron angular momentum (spin). This physical phenomenon permits the generation of spin polarization from charge current (Edelstein effect), which leads to the buildup of spin accumulation. Spin accumulation due to Rashba Edelstein effect has been recently reported to be uniform and oriented in plane, which has been suggested for applications as spin filter device and efficient driving force for magnetization switching. Here, we report the X-ray spectroscopy ch…
We report on a comparative numerical study of the spin Hall conductivity in two-dimensions for three different spin-orbit interaction models; the standard k-linear Rashba model, the k-cubic Rashba model that describes two-dimensional hole systems, and a modified k-linear Rashba model in which the spin-orbit coupling strength is energy dependent. Numerical finite-size Kubo formula results indicate that the spin Hall conductivity of the k-linear Rashba model vanishes for frequency $ω$ much smaller than the scattering rate $τ^{-1}$, with order one relative fluctuations surviving out to large syst…
When the inversion symmetry is broken at a surface, spin-orbit interaction gives rise to spin-dependent energy shifts - a phenomenon which is known as the spin Rashba effect. Recently, it has been recognized that an orbital counterpart of the spin Rashba effect - the orbital Rashba effect - can be realized at surfaces even without spin- orbit coupling. Here, we propose a mechanism for the orbital Rashba effect based on sp orbital hybridization, which ultimately leads to the electric polarization of surface states. As a proof of principle, we show from first principles that this effect leads to…
We study the effect of disorder on the intrinsic anomalous Hall (AH) conductivity in a spin-polarized two-dimensional electron gas with a Rashba-type spin-orbit interaction. We find that AH conductivity vanishes unless the lifetime is spin-dependent, similar to the spin Hall (SH) conductivity in the non-magnetic system. In addition, we find that the SH conductivity does not vanish in the presence of magnetic scatterers. We show that the SH conductivity can be controlled by changing the amount of the magnetic impurities.
We develop a Wigner function representation of the quantum transport theory of the conduction band electrons in Rashba effect resonant tunneling structures with a phonon bath. In narrow band gap heterostructures, spin splitting occurs mainly as a result of inversion asymmetry in the spatial dependence of the potential or as a result of external electric field. This "zero magnetic field spin splitting" is due to the Rashba term in the effective mass Hamiltonian. The quantum transport equations are derived using multi-band non-equilibrium Green's function formulation in generalized Kadanoff-Baym…
The Rashba-Edelstein effect stems from the interaction between the electron's spin and its momentum induced by spin-orbit interaction at an interface or a surface. It was shown that the inverse Rashba-Edelstein effect can be used to convert a spin- into a charge current. Here, we demonstrate that a Bi/Ag Rashba interface can even drive an adjacent ferromagnet to resonance. We employ a spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance excitation/detection scheme which was developed originally for a bulk spin-orbital effect, the spin Hall effect. In our experiment, the direct Rashba-Edelstein effect generates…
Transport by helical edge states of a quantum spin Hall insulator is experimentally characterized by a weakly temperature-dependent mean free path of a few microns and by reproducible conductance oscillations, challenging proposed theoretical explanations. We consider a model where edge electrons experience spatially random Rashba spin-orbit coupling and couple to a magnetic impurity with spin S >= 1/2. In a finite bias steady state, we find for S > 1/2 an impurity induced resistance with a temperature dependence in agreement with experiments. Since backscattering is elastic, interference betw…
By using the momentum-space Lanczos recursive method which considers rigorously all multiple-scattering events, we unveil that the non-perturbative disorder effect has dramatic impact on the charge transport of a two-dimensional electron system with Rashba spin-orbit coupling in the low-density region. Our simulations find a power-law dependence of the dc longitudinal conductivity on the carrier density, with the exponent linearly dependent on the Rashba spin-orbit strength but independent of the disorder strength. Therefore, the classical charge transport influenced by complicated multiple-sc…
There is steadily increasing evidence that the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) formed at the interface of some insulating oxides like LaAlO3/SrTiO3 and LaTiO3/SrTiO3 is strongly inhomogeneous. The inhomogeneous distribution of electron density is accompanied by an inhomogeneous distribution of the (self-consistent) electric field confining the electrons at the interface. In turn this inhomogeneous transverse electric field induces an inhomogeneous Rashba spin-orbit coupling (RSOC). After an introductory summary on two mechanisms possibly giving rise to an electronic phase separation accoun…
We present low temperature magnetoconductivity measurements of a density-tunable and high mobility two-dimensional electron gas confined in the wide bandgap GaN/AlGaN system. We observed pronounced anti-localization minima in the low-field conductivity, indicating the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling. Density dependent measurements of magnetoconductivity indicate that the coupling is mainly due to the Bychkov-Rashba mechanism. In addition, we have derived a closed-form expression for the magnetoconductivity, allowing us to extract reliable transport parameters for our devices. The Rashba…
We have studied the BiCu$_2$/Cu(111) surface alloy using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. We observed standing waves caused by scattering off defects and step edges. Different from previous studies on similar Rashba-type surfaces, we identified multiple scattering vectors that originate from various intraband as well as interband scattering processes. A detailed energy-dependent analysis of the standing-wave patterns enables a quantitative determination of band dispersions, including the Rashba splitting. The results are in good agreement with ARPES data and demo…
We study a periodically driven nanowire with Rashba-like conduction and valence bands in the presence of a magnetic field. We identify topological regimes in which the system hosts zero-energy Majorana fermions. We further investigate the effect of strong electron-electron interactions that give rise to parafermion zero energy modes hosted at the nanowire ends. The first setup we consider allows for topological phases by applying only static magnetic fields without the need of superconductivity. The second setup involves both superconductivity and time-dependent magnetic fields and allows one …
We study spin torques induced by Rashba spin-orbit coupling in two-dimensional ferromagnets under the good-metal condition $ε_{F}τ/\hbar\gg1$ ($ε_{F}$ the Fermi energy, $τ$ the electron lifetime) by employing the Kubo formula. We find that, in the presence of spin-dependent disorder the Rashba torque changes greatly as the system evolves out of the weak disorder limit where $\hbar/τ$ is much smaller than any intrinsic energy scale characterizing the multiband structure. The antidamping-like component of Rashba torque can be comparable to and larger than the field-like one out of the weak disor…
Employing unbiased large-scale time-dependent density-matrix renormalization-group simulations, we demonstrate the generation of a charge-current vortex via spin injection in the Rashba system. The spin current is polarized perpendicular to the system plane and injected from an attached antiferromagnetic spin chain. We discuss the conversion between spin and orbital angular momentum in the current vortex that occurs because of the conservation of the total angular momentum and the spin-orbit interaction. This is in contrast to the spin Hall effect, in which the angular-momentum conservation is…
The spin-dependent density of states and the density of spin polarization of an InAs-based two-dimensional electron gas with the Rashba spin-orbit coupling under an intense terahertz laser field are investigated by utilizing the Floquet states to solve the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. It is found that both densities are strongly affected by the terahertz laser field. Especially a terahertz magnetic moment perpendicular to the external terahertz laser field in the electron gas is induced. This effect can be used to convert terahertz electric signals into terahertz magnetic ones efficien…
We propose a simple method to detect the relative strength of Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-obit interactions in quantum wells (QWs) without relying on the directional-dependent physical quantities. This method utilize the asymmetry of critical gate voltages that leading to the remarkable signals of SU(2) symmetry, which happens to reflect the intrinsic structure inversion asymmetry of the QW. We support our proposal by the numerical calculation of in-plane relaxation times based on the self-consistent eight-band Kane model. We find that the two different critical gate voltages leading to the ma…
We propose an experimental realization of the Spin Hall effect in graphene by illuminating a graphene sheet on top of a substrate with circularly polarized monochromatic light. The substrate induces a controllable Rashba type spin-orbit coupling which breaks the spin-degeneracy of the Dirac cones but it is gapless. The circularly polarized light induces a gap in the spectrum and turns graphene into a Floquet topological insulator with spin dependent edge states. By analyzing the high and intermediate frequency regimes, we find that in both parameter limits, the spin-Chern number can be tuned b…
Quantum interference effects in rings provide suitable means for controlling spin at mesoscopic scales. Here we apply such control mechanisms to coherent spin-dependent transport in one- and two-dimensional rings subject to Rashba spin-orbit coupling. We first study the spin-induced modulation of unpolarized currents as a function of the Rashba coupling strength. The results suggest the possibility of all-electrical spintronic devices. Moreover, we find signatures of Berry phases in the conductance previously unnoticed. Second, we show that the polarization direction of initially polarized, tr…
We derive the eigenenergies and eigenstates of electrons in a quantum wire subjected to an external magnetic field. These are calculated in the presence of spin orbit interactions arising from the Rashba (structural inversion asymmetry) and Dresselhaus (bulk inversion asymmetry) effects. We consider three cases: the external magnetic field is oriented (i) along the axis of the wire, (ii) perpendicular to the axis but parallel to the electric field associated with structural inversion asymmetry (Rashba effect), and (iii) perpendicular to the axis as well as the electric field. In all cases, the…
Using the Bogoliubov de-Gennes formalism, we investigate the charge and spin-dependent thermoelectric effects in superconductor graphene junctions. Results demonstrate that despite normal-superconductor junctions, there is a temperature-dependent spin thermopower both in the graphene-based ferromagnetic-superconductor (F-S) and ferromagnetic-Rashba spin-orbit region-superconductor (F-RSO-S) junctions. It is also shown that in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit interaction, the charge and spin-dependent Seebeck coefficients can reach to their maximum up to 3.5$k_B/e$ and 2.5$k_B/e$, respectively…
We study the effect of the Rashba spin-orbit interaction in the quantum transport of carbon nanotubes with arbitrary chiralities. For certain spin directions, we find a strong spin-polarized electrical current that depends on the diameter of the tube, the length of the Rashba region and on the tube chirality. Predictions for the spin-dependent conductances are presented for different families of achiral and chiral tubes. We have found that different symmetries acting on spatial and spin variables have to be considered in order to explain the relations between spin-resolved conductances in carb…
We have numerically solved the Hamiltonian of an electron in a semiconductor double ring subjected to the magnetic flux and Rashba spin-orbit interaction. It is found that the Aharonov-Bohm energy spectrum reveals multi-zigzag periodic structures. The investigations of spin-dependent electron dynamics via Rabi oscillations in two-level and three-level systems demonstrate the possibility of manipulating quantum states. Our results show that the optimal control of photon-assisted inter-ring transitions can be achieved by employing cascade-type and $Λ$-type transition mechanisms. Under chirped pu…
The electronic transport in a system of two quantum rings side-coupled to a quantum wire is studied via a single-band tunneling tight-binding Hamiltonian. We derived analytical expressions for the conductance and spin polarization when the rings are threaded by magnetic fluxes with Rashba spin-orbit interaction. We show that by using the Fano and Dicke effects this system can be used as an efficient spin-filter even for small spin orbit interaction and small values of magnetic flux. We compare the spin-dependent polarization of this design and the polarization obtained with one ring side coupl…
We perform a numerical study on the spin-resolved transport in a quantum wire (QW) under the modulation of both Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and a perpendicular magnetic field (MF) by adopting the developed Usuki transfer-matrix method in combination with the Landauer-Buttiker formalism. Wide spin filtering energy windows can be achieved in this system for a spin-unpolarized injection. In addition, both the width of these energy windows and the magnitude of the spin conductance within these energy widows can be tuned by varying the Rashba SOC strength, which can be apprehended by analyzing…
We investigate the production of spin-polarized currents in corrugated graphene nanoribbons. Such corrugations are modeled as multiple regions with Rashba spin-orbit interactions, where concave and convex curvatures are treated as Rashba regions with opposite signs. Numerical examples for different separated Rashba-zone geometries calculated within the tight-binding approximation are provided. Remarkably, the spin-polarized current in a system with several Rashba areas can be enhanced with respect to the case with a single Rashba part of the same total area. The enhancement is larger for confi…
The spin degree of freedom is crucial for both understanding and exploiting the particular properties of the edges of two-dimensional topological insulators. In the absence of superconductivity and magnetism, Rashba coupling is the most relevant single particle perturbation in this system. Since Rashba coupling does not break time reversal symmetry, its influence on transport properties is only visible if processes that do not conserve the single particle energy are included. Paradigmatic examples of such processes are electron-electron interactions and time dependent external drivings. We ana…
