Edelstein and spin Hall effect response functions for a two-dimensional (2D) system of pseudospin-1 particles is investigated. These two response functions denoted by $ σ_{SH} $ and $ σ_{EE} $ have been analyzed in a pseudospin-1 particle system in the presence of the Rashba-type spin-orbit interaction using the Kubo-Streda technique and vertex corrections with non-magnetic impurities. Then, for a given range of the Rashba coupling, response functions of the spin Hall effect (SHE) and Edelstein effect (EE) have been estimated at various energy gaps and Fermi energies. Results indicate that in this type of the two-dimensional materials, SHE and EE are essentially induced by the vertex corrections and without considering these corrections the amount of these effects are really negligible. It has also been realized that SHE and EE conductivities can be modulated by the Rashba coupling strength at low and intermediate level of this spin-orbit type interaction.
In this paper, we report the observation of spin-orbit magnetoresistance (SOMR) in ferromagnetic metal/heavy metal/MgO system. We measure the magnetoresistance as the function of the thickness of heavy metal (HM) for CoFeB/HM/MgO and CoFeB/HM films where HM = Pt and Ta. Besides the conventional spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) peak, the evidence of the SOMR is indicated by another peak of the MR ratio when the thickness of HM is around 1 ~ 2 nm for CoFeB/HM/MgO films, which is absent for CoFeB/HM films. We speculate the SOMR observed in our experiment originates from the spin-orbit coupling a…

Thanks to its unique symmetry, the unidirectional spin Hall and Rashba-Edelstein magnetoresistance (USRMR) is of great fundamental and practical interest, particularly in the context of reading magnetization states in two-terminal spin-orbit torque switching memory and logic devices. Recent studies show that topological insulators could improve USRMR amplitude. However, the topological insulator device configurations studied so far in this context, namely ferromagnetic metal/topological insulator bilayers and magnetically doped topological insulators, suffer from current shunting by the metall…
Hybrid structures of quantum spin-Hall insulators (QSHIs) and superconductors (Ss) present a unique opportunity to access dissipationless topological states of matter, which, however, is frequently hindered by the lack of control over the spin polarization in QSHIs. We propose a very efficient spin-polarization mechanism based on the magnetoelectric (Edelstein) effect in superconducting QSHI structures. It acts akin to the Zeeman splitting in an external magnetic field, but with an effective $g$-factor of order of 1000, resulting in an unprecedented spin-splitting effect. It allows a magnetic …
In an easy-plane antiferromagnet with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), magnons are subject to an effective spin-momentum locking. An in-plane temperature gradient can generate interfacial accumulation of magnons with a specified polarization, realizing the magnon thermal Edelstein effect. We theoretically investigate the injection and detection of this thermally-driven spin polarization in an adjacent heavy metal with strong spin Hall effect. We find that the inverse spin Hall voltage depends monotonically on both temperature and the DMI but non-monotonically on the hard-axis aniso…
Spin-charge conversion by inverse spin Hall effect or inverse Rashba-Edelstein effect is prevalent in spintronics but dissipative. We propose a dissipationless spin-charge conversion mechanism by an excitonic pseudospin superfluid in an electron-hole double layer system. Magnetic exchange fields lift singlet-triplet degeneracy of interlayer exciton levels in the double layer system. Condensation of the singlet-triplet hybridized excitons breaks both a U(1) gauge symmetry and a pseudospin rotational symmetry around the fields, leading to spin-charge coupled superflow in the system. We demonstra…
In this paper we report calculations of some pseudospin textures for bilayer quantum hall systems with filling factor $ ν=1$. The textures we study are isolated single meron solutions. Meron solutions have already been studied at great length by others by minimising the microscopic Hamiltonian between microscopic trial wavefunctions. Our approach is somewhat different. We calculate them by numerically solving the nonlinear integro -differential equations arising from extremisation of the effective action for pseudospin textures. Our results can be viewed as augmenting earlier results and provi…
We analyze the experimentally obtained spin-current-related magnetoresistance in epitaxial Pt/Co bilayers by using a drift-diffusion model that incorporates both bulk spin Hall effect and interfacial Rashba-Edelstein effect (REE). The magnetoresistance analysis yields, for the Pt/Co interface, a temperature-independent Rashba parameter in the order of 1e-11 eV m that agrees with theoretical calculations, along with an effective interfacial REE thickness of several angstroms which is in overall consistency with our previous spin-orbit torque analysis. In particular, our results suggest that bot…
In the bilayer quantum Hall coherent state for $ν_T$ deviating slightly from one, we show that, instead of the global order parameter, the spontaneous breaking of the pseudospin U(1) rotational symmetry is reflected by the periodic domain structure accompanying with the charged meron pairs. The motion of meron pairs induces a novel pseudospin wave. The long range order of the periodic domains in a low bias voltage range leads to the residual zero-bias peak in the tunneling conductance even when the pseudopsin Goldstone feature in a high bias voltage range can be distinct from it.
Pseudospin solitons in double-layer quantum Hall systems can be introduced by a magnetic field component coplanar with the electrons and can be pinned by applying voltages to external gates. We estimate the temperature below which depinning occurs predominantly via tunneling and calculate low-temperature depinning rates for realistic geometries. We discuss the local changes in charge and current densities and in spectral functions that can be used to detect solitons and observe their temporal evolution.
We investigate a domain structure of pseudospins, a soliton lattice in the bilayer quantum Hall state at total Landau level filling factor $ν=1$, in a tilted magnetic field, where the pseudospin represents the layer degree of freedom. An anomalous peak in the magnetoresistance $R_{xx}$ appears at the transition point between the commensurate and incommensurate phases. The $R_{xx}$ at the peak is highly anisotropic for the angle between the in-plain magnetic field $B_\parallel $ and the current, and indicates a formation of the soliton lattice aligned parallel to $B_\parallel $. Temperature dep…
The parallel field of a full spin polarization of the electron gas in a \Gamma8 conduction band of the HgTe quantum well was obtained from the magnetoresistance by three different ways in a zero and quasi-classical range of perpendicular field component Bper. In the quantum Hall range of Bper the spin polarization manifests in anticrossings of magnetic levels, which were found to strongly nonmonotonously depend on Bper.
Recent experiments on strongly correlated bilayer quantum Hall systems strongly suggest that, contrary to the usual assumption, the electron spin degree of freedom is not completely frozen either in the quantum Hall or in the compressibles states that occur at filling factor $ν=1.$ These experiments imply that the quasiparticles at $ν=1$ could have both spin and pseudospin textures i.e. they could be CP$^{3}$ skyrmions. Using a microscopic unrestricted Hartree-Fock approximation, we compute the energy of several crystal states with spin, pseudospin and mixed spin-pseudospin textures around $ν=…
We present dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) in the simplest pseudospin quantum Hall ferromagnet (QHF) of an InSb two-dimensional electron gas with a large g factor using tilted magnetic fields. The DNP-induced amplitude change of a resistance spike of the QHF at large current enables observation of the resistively detected nuclear magnetic resonance of the high nuclear spin isotope 115In with nine quadrupole splittings. Our results demonstrate the importance of domain structures in the DNP process. The nuclear spin relaxation time T1 in this QHF was relatively short (~ 120 s), and almost tem…
We report the observation of magnetoresistance originating from Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in a metallic heterostructure: the Rashba-Edelstein (RE) magnetoresistance. We show that the simultaneous action of the direct and inverse RE effects in a Bi/Ag/CoFeB trilayer couples current-induced spin accumulation to the electric resistance. The electric resistance changes with the magnetic-field angle, reminiscent of the spin Hall magnetoresistance, despite the fact that bulk SOC is not responsible for the magnetoresistance. We further found that, even when the magnetization is saturated, the …
The spectral functions of the pseudospin correlation functions in the bilayer quantum Hall system at ν=1 are investigated numerically, where the pseudospin describes the layer degrees of freedom. In the pseudospin-ferromagnetic phase, the lowest-energy excitation branch is closely connected with the ground state through the fluctuations of pseudospin S_y and S_z, and it plays a significant role on the tunneling properties in this system. For the system with very small tunneling amplitude and layer separation smaller than the critical one, the system-size dependence of calculated spectral funct…
We revisit the physics of electron gas bilayers in the quantum Hall regime [Nature, 432 (2004) 691; Science, 305 (2004) 950], where transport and tunneling measurements provided evidence of a superfluid phase being present in the system. Previously, this behavior was explained by the possible formation of a BEC of excitons in the half-filled electron bilayers, where empty states play the role of holes. We discuss the fundamental difficulties with this scenario, and propose an alternative approach based on a treatment of the system as a pseudospin magnet. We show that the experimentally observe…
In this paper we study in detail different types of topological solitons which are possible in bilayer quantum Hall systems at filling fraction $ν=1$ when spin degrees of freedom are included. Starting from a microscopic Hamiltonian we derive an effective energy functional for studying such excitations. The gauge invariance and $CP^{3}$ character of this energy fuctional and their consequences are examined. Then we identify permissible classes of finite energy solutions which are topologically non-trivial. We also numerically evaulate a representative solution in which a pseudospin (layer degr…
Using exact diagonalization of bilayer quantum Hall systems at total filling factor $ν_T=1$ in the torus geometry, we show that there is a new long-range interlayer phase coherence due to spontaneous pseudospin spiral order at interlayer distances larger than the critical value at which the pseudospin ferromagnetic order is destroyed. We emphasize the distinction between the interlayer phase coherence and the pseudospin ferromagnetic order.
The Hartree-Fock paradigm of bilayer quantum Hall states with finite tunneling at filling factor $ν$=1 has full pseudospin ferromagnetic order with all the electrons in the lowest symmetric Landau level. Inelastic light scattering measurements of low energy spin excitations reveal major departures from the paradigm at relatively large tunneling gaps. The results indicate the emergence of a novel correlated quantum Hall state at $ν$=1 characterized by reduced pseudospin order. Marked anomalies occur in spin excitations when pseudospin polarization collapses by application of in-plane magnetic f…
At total filling factor $ν=1$ quantum Hall bilayers can have an ordered ground state with spontaneous interlayer phase coherence. The ordered state is signaled experimentally by dramatically enhanced interlayer tunnel conductances at low bias voltages; at larger bias voltages inter-layer currents are similar to those of the disordered state. We associate this change in behavior with the existence of a critical current beyond which static inter-layer phase differences cannot be maintained, and examine the dependence of this critical current on sample geometry, phase stiffness, and the coherent …
We present a new theoretical approach to the study of $ν=1$ quantum Hall bilayer that is based on a systematic mapping of the microscopic Hamiltonian to an anisotropic SU(4) spin model on a lattice. To study the properties of this model we generalize the Heisenberg model Schwinger boson mean field theory (SBMFT) of Arovas and Auerbach to spin models with anisotropy. We calculate the temperature dependence of experimentally observable quantities, including the spin magnetization, and the differential interlayer capacitance. Our theory represents a substantial improvement over the conventional H…
We extend the semiclassical Boltzmann formalism for the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in nondegenerate multiband electron systems to the spin Hall effect (SHE) and unconventional Edelstein effect (UEE, cannot be accounted for by the conventional Boltzmann equation, unlike the conventional Edelstein effect). This extension is confirmed by extending the Kohn-Luttinger density-matrix transport theory in the weak disorder-potential regime. By performing Kubo linear response calculations in a prototypical multiband model, the Boltzmann scaling for the AHE/SHE and UEE is found to be valid only if the …
We investigate quasiparticles in bilayer quantum Hall systems around total filling factor nu =1 by current-pumped and resistively detected NMR. The measured Knight shift reveals that the spin component in the quasiparticle increases continuously with $Δ_{SAS}$. Combined with results for the pseudospin component obtained by activation gap measurements, this demonstrates that both spin and pseudospin are contained in a quasiparticle at intermediate $Δ_{SAS}$, providing evidence for the existence of the spin-pseudospin intermixed SU(4) skyrmion. Nuclear spin relaxation measurements show that the …
The study of spin-orbit coupling of photons has attracted much attention in recent years, and leads to many potential applications in optics. In the recently discovered metamaterial -- photonic crystals with Weyl points, the pseudospin-orbit coupling of photons bears a resemblance to the spin-orbit coupling. We study the pseudospin Hall effect of light in such metamaterials and find that during total reflection, the light beam experiences a transverse shift that is proportional to the pseudospin (or the monopole charge) of the Weyl point. As the spin Hall effect has inspired many works to expl…
The chiral two-dimensional electron gas in Landau levels $\left\vert N\right\vert >0$ of a Bernal-stacked graphene bilayer has a valley-pseudospin Ising quantum Hall ferromagnetic behavior at odd filling factors $ν_{N}=1,3$ of these fourfold degenerate states. At zero interlayer electrical bias, the ground state at these fillings is spin polarized and electrons occupy one valley or the other while a finite electrical bias produces a series of valley pseudospin-flip transitions. In this work, we extend the Ising behavior to chirally-stacked multilayer graphene and discuss the hysteretic behavio…
We show that exchange interactions in two-dimensional electron gases out of equilibrium can generate a fictitious vector potential with intriguing signatures in interference and Hall measurements. Detailed predictions are made for graphene, where the effect is enhanced by pseudospin exchange.
We discuss the universal spin dynamics in quasi one-dimensional systems including the real spin in narrow-gap semiconductors like InAs and InSb, the valley pseudospin in staggered single-layer graphene, and the combination of real spin and valley pseudospin characterizing single-layer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) such as MoS$_2$, WS$_2$, MoSe$_2$, and WSe$_2$. All these systems can be described by the same Dirac-like Hamiltonian. Spin-dependent observable effects in one of these systems thus have counterparts in each of the other systems. Effects discussed in more detail include eq…
We analyze bilayer quantum Hall ferromagnets, whose underlying symmetry group is SU(4). Spin-pseudospin coherence develops spontaneously when the total electron density is low enough. Quasiparticles are CP^3 skyrmions. One skyrmion induces charge modulations on both of the two layers. At the filling factor$ν=2/m$ one elementary excitation consists of a pair of skyrmions and its charge is $2e/m$. Recent experimental data due to Sawada et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 80}, 4534 (1998)] support this conclusion.
The tilting angular dependence of the energy gap was measured in the bilayer quantum Hall state at the Landau level filling $ν=1$ by changing the density imbalance between the two layers. The observed gap behavior shows a continuous transformation from the bilayer balanced density state to the monolayer state. Even a sample with 33 K tunneling gap shows the same activation energy anomaly reported by Murphy {\it et al.}. We discuss a possible relation between our experimental results and the quantum Hall ferromagnet of spins and pseudospins.
When two Landau levels are brought to a close coincidence between them and with the chemical potential in the Integer Quantum Hall regime, the two Landau levels can just cross or collapse while the external or pseudospin field that induces the alignment changes. In this work, all possible crossings are analyzed theoretically for the particular case of semiconductor trilayer systems, using a variational Hartree-Fock approximation. The model includes tunneling between neighboring layers, bias, intra-layer and inter-layer Coulomb interaction among the electrons. We have found that the general pse…
Broken symmetry ground states with uniform electron density are common in quantum Hall systems when two Landau levels simultaneously approach the chemical potential at integer filling factor $ν$. The close analogy between these two-dimensional electron system states and conventional itinerant electron ferromagnets can be emphasized by using a pseudospin label to distinguish the two Landau levels. As in conventional ferromagnets, the evolution of the system's state as external field parameters are varied is expected to be sensitive to the dependence of ground state energy on pseudospin orientat…
In mean-field-theory bilayer graphene's massive Dirac fermion model has a family of broken inversion symmetry ground states with charge gaps and flavor dependent spontaneous inter layer charge transfers. We use a lattice Hartree-Fock model to explore some of the physics which controls whether or not this type of broken symmetry state, which can be viewed as a pseudospin ferromagnet, occurs in nature. We find that inversion symmetry is still broken in the lattice model and estimate that transferred areal densities are $\sim 10^{-5}$ electrons per carbon atom, that the associated energy gaps are…
We demonstrate the coexistence of pseudospin- and valley-Hall-like edge states in a photonic crystal with $C_{3v}$ symmetry, which is composed of three interlacing triangular sublattices with the same lattice constants. By tuning the geometry of the sublattices, three complete photonic band gaps with nontrivial topology can be created, one of which is due to the band inversion associated with the pseudospin degree of freedom at the $Γ$ point and the other two due to the gapping out of Dirac cones associated with the valley degree of freedom at the $K, K'$ points. The system can support tri-ban…
Excitation spectra in bilayer quantum Hall systems at total Landau-level filling $ν=2$ are studied by the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approximation. The systems have the spin degrees of freedom in addition to the layer degrees of freedom described in terms of pseudospin. On the excitation spectra from spin-unpolarized and pseudospin-polarized ground state, this approximation fully preserves the spin rotational symmetry and thus can give not only spin-triplet but also spin-singlet excitations systematically. It is also found that the ground-state properties are well described by this approximation.

We discuss and review recent advances in our understaning of quantum Hall systems where additional quantum numbers associated with spin and/or layer (pseudospin) indices play crucial roles in creating exotic quantum phases. Among the novel quantum phases we discuss are the recently discovered canted antiferromagnetic phase, the spontaneous interlayer coherent phase, and various spin Bose glass phases. We describe the theoretical models used in studying these novel phases and the various experimental techniques being used to search for these phases. Both zero temperature quantum phase transitio…
Graphene is an excellent material for long distance spin transport but allows little spin manipulation. Transition metal dichalcogenides imprint their strong spin-orbit coupling into graphene via proximity effect, and it has been predicted that efficient spin-to-charge conversion due to spin Hall and Rashba-Edelstein effects could be achieved. Here, by combining Hall probes with ferromagnetic electrodes, we unambiguously demonstrate experimentally spin Hall effect in graphene induced by MoS$_2$ proximity and for varying temperature up to room temperature. The fact that spin transport and spin …

The two-dimensional electron gas in a bilayer graphene in the Bernal stacking supports a variety of uniform broken-symmetry ground states in Landau level N=0 at integer filling factors $ν\in [-3,4].$ When an electric potential difference (or bias) is applied between the layers at filling factors $ν=-1,3$, the ground state evolves from an interlayer coherent state at small bias to a state with orbital coherence at higher bias where \textit{electric} dipoles associated with the orbital pseudospins order spontaneously in the plane of the layers. In this paper, we show that by further increasing t…
Resistively Detected Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (RD-NMR) has been used to investigate a two-subband electron system in a regime where quantum Hall pseudo-spin ferromagnetic (QHPF) states are prominently developed. It reveals that the easy-axis QHPF state around the total filling factor $ν=4 $ can be detected by the RD-NMR measurement. Approaching one of the Landau level (LL) crossing points, the RD-NMR signal strength and the nuclear spin relaxation rate $1/T_{1}$ enhance significantly, a signature of low energy spin excitations. However, the RD-NMR signal at another identical LL crossing poin…
We investigate the charge and spin structures associated with arbitrary smooth polarization textures in Ising (integer) quantum Hall ferromagnets. We consider the case where the two polarizations (denoted "pseudospin" up and down) correspond to states with opposite physical spin and different Landau level indices, $n\uparrow$ and $m\downarrow$. We derive analytic expressions for the charge and spin densities, as functions of the underlying pseudospin texture, and use these results to investigate different types of linear domain walls, both analytically and numerically. We find that any smooth …
Understanding spin physics in graphene is crucial for developing future two-dimensional spintronic devices. Recent studies show that efficient spin-to-charge conversions via either the inverse spin Hall effect or the inverse Rashba-Edelstein effect can be achieved in graphene by proximity with an adjacent spin-orbit coupling material. Lateral spin valve devices, made up of a graphene Hall bar and ferromagnets, are best suited for such studies. Here, we report that signals mimicking the inverse Rashba-Edelstein effect can be measured in pristine graphene possessing negligible spin-orbit couplin…
We present a microscopic theory of zero-temperature order parameter and pseudospin stiffness reduction due to quantum fluctuations in the ground state of double-layer quantum Hall ferromagnets. Collective excitations in this systems are properly described only when interactions in both direct and exchange particle-hole channels are included. We employ a functional integral approach which is able to account for both, and comment on its relation to diagrammatic perturbation theory. We also discuss its relation to Gaussian fluctuation approximations based on Hubbard-Stratonovich-transformation re…
We study the correlation energy, the effective anisotropy parameter, and quantum fluctuations of the pseudospin magnetization in bilayer quantum Hall systems at total filling factor nu=1 by means of exact diagonalizations of the Hamiltonian in the spherical geometry. We compare exact diagonalization results for the ground state energy with finite-size Hartree-Fock values. In the ordered ground state phase at small layer separations the Hartree-Fock data compare reasonably with the exact results. Above the critical layer separation, however, the Hartree-Fock findings still predict an increase i…
It is a conventional wisdom that the helical edge states of quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulator are particularly stable due to the topological protection of time-reversal symmetry. Here, we report the first experimental observation of an edge-dependent quantum (pseudo-)spin Hall effect by employing two Kekule electric circuits with molecule-zigzag and partially-bearded edges, where the chirality of the circulating current in the unit cell mimics the electron spin. We observe a helicity flipping of the topological in-gap modes emerging in opposite parameter regions for the two edge geometries. Ex…
