If $Y$ is a properly embedded minimal surface in a convex cocompact hyperbolic 3-manifold $M$ with boundary at infinity an embedded curve $γ$, then Graham and Witten showed how to define a renormalized area $\calA$ of $Y$ via Hadamard regularization. We study renormalized area as a functional on the space of all such minimal surfaces. This requires a closer examination of these moduli spaces; following White and Coskunuzer, we prove these are Banach manifolds and that the natural map taking $Y$ to $γ$ is Fredholm of index zero and proper, which leads to the existence of a $\ZZ$-valued degree theory for this mapping. We show that $\calA(Y)$ can be expressed as a sum of the Euler characteristic of $Y$ and the total integral of norm squared of the trace-free second fundamental form of $Y$. An extension of renormalized area to a wider class of nonminimal surfaces has a similar formula also involving the integral of mean curvature squared. We prove a formula for the first variation of renormalized area, and characterize the critical points when $M = \HH^3$ and $γ$ has a single component. All of these results have analogues for 4-dimensional Poincaré-Einstein metrics. We conclude by discussing the relationship of $\calA$ to the Willmore functional.
We extend the concept of renormalized volume for geometrically finite hyperbolic $3$-manifolds, and show that is continuous for geometrically convergent sequences of hyperbolic structures over an acylindrical 3-manifold $M$ with geometrically finite limit. This allows us to show that the renormalized volume attains its minimum (in terms of the conformal class at $\partial M = S$) at the geodesic class, the conformal class for which the boundary of the convex core is totally geodesic.
We derive a new renormalized volume formula for conformally compact asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds in dimension four. The formula generalizes the ones given by Anderson, Albin, and Chang-Qing-Yang for the case of Poincare-Einstein manifolds. We also derive variational formulas for the renormalized seen as a functional on the manifold.
We prove an inequality bounding the renormalized area of a complete minimal surface in hyperbolic space in terms of the conformal length of its ideal boundary.
We reinterpret the renormalized volume as the asymptotic difference of the isoperimetric profiles for convex co-compact hyperbolic 3-manifolds. By similar techniques we also prove a sharp Minkowski inequality for horospherically convex sets in $\mathbb{H}^3$. Finally, we include the classification of stable constant mean curvature surfaces in regions bounded by two geodesic planes in $\mathbb{H}^3$ or in cyclic quotients of $\mathbb{H}^3$.
We study the critical points of the renormalized volume for acylindrical geometrically finite hyperbolic 3-manifolds that include rank-1 cusps, and show that the renormalized volume is locally convex around these critical points. We give a modified definition of the renormalized volume that is additive under gluing, and study some local properties.
We study complete finite topology immersed surfaces $Σ$ in complete Riemannian $3$-manifolds $N$ with sectional curvature $K_N\leq -a^2\leq 0$, such that the absolute mean curvature function of $Σ$ is bounded from above by $a$ and its injectivity radius function is not bounded away from zero on each of its annular end representatives. We prove that such a surface $Σ$ must be proper in $N$ and its total curvature must be equal to $2πχ(Σ)$. If $N$ is a hyperbolic $3$-manifold of finite volume and $Σ$ is a properly immersed surface of finite topology with nonnegative constant mean curvature less …
We define and study the renormalized volume for geometrically finite hyperbolic $3$-manifolds, including with rank-$1$ cusps. We prove a variation formula, and show that for certain families of convex co-compact hyperbolic metrics $g_\eps$ degenerating to a geometrically finite hyperbolic metric $g_0$ with rank-$1$ cusps, the renormalized volume converges to the renormalized volume of the limiting metric.
We obtain upper and lower bounds on the difference between the renormalized volume and the volume of the convex core of a convex cocompact hyperbolic 3-manifold which depend on the injectivity radius of the boundary of the universal cover of the convex core and the Euler characteristic of the boundary of the convex core. These results generalize results of Schlenker obtained in the setting of quasifuchsian hyperbolic 3-manifolds.
We study the infimum of the renormalized volume for convex-cocompact hyperbolic manifolds, as well as describing how a sequence converging to such values behaves. In particular, we show that the renormalized volume is continuous under the appropriate notion of limit. This result generalizes previous work in the subject.
In this paper we show that bending a finite volume hyperbolic $d$-manifold $M$ along a totally geodesic hypersurface $Σ$ results in a properly convex projective structure on $M$ with finite volume. We also discuss various geometric properties of bent manifolds and algebraic properties of their fundamental groups. We then use this result to show in each dimension $d\geq 3$ there are examples finite volume, but non-compact, properly convex $d$-manifolds. Furthermore, we show that the examples can be chosen to be either strictly convex or non-strictly convex.
We prove that a complete hyperbolic 3-manifold of finite volume does not admit a properly embedded noncompact surface of finite topology with constant mean curvature greater than or equal to 1.
To a complex projective structure $Σ$ on a surface, Thurston associates a locally convex pleated surface. We derive bounds on the geometry of both in terms of the norms $\|ϕ_Σ\|_\infty$ and $\|ϕ_Σ\|_2$ of the quadratic differential $ϕ_Σ$ of $Σ$ given by the Schwarzian derivative of the associated locally univalent map. We show that these give a unifying approach that generalizes a number of important, well known results for convex cocompact hyperbolic structures on 3-manifolds, including bounds on the Lipschitz constant for the nearest-point retraction and the length of the bending lamination.…
In the spirit of Otal and Croke, we prove that a negatively-curved asymptotically hyperbolic surface is boundary distance rigid, where the distance between two points on the boundary at infinity is defined by a renormalized quantity.
Quasifuchsian hyperbolic manifolds, or more generally convex co-compact hyperbolic manifolds, have infinite volume, but they have a well-defined ``renormalized'' volume. We outline some relations between this renormalized volume and the volume, or more precisely the ``dual volume'', of the convex core. On one hand, there are striking similarities between them, for instance in their variational formulas. On the other, object related to them tend to be within bounded distance. Those analogies and proximities lead to several questions. Both the renormalized volume and the dual volume can be used …
In this paper, aimed at exploring the fundamental properties of isoperimetric region in $3$-manifold $(M^3,g)$ which is asymptotic to Anti-de Sitter-Schwarzschild manifold with scalar curvature $R\geq -6$, we prove that connected isoperimetric region $\{D_i\}$ with $\mathcal{H}_g ^3(D_i)\geq δ_0>0$ cannot slide off to the infinity of $(M^3,g)$ provided that $(M^3,g)$ is not isometric to the hyperbolic space. Furthermore, we prove that isoperimetric region $\{D_i\}$ with topological sphere $\{\partial D_i\}$ as boundary is exhausting regions of $M$ if Hawking mass $m_H(\partial D_i)$ has unifor…
We show that the renormalized volume of a quasifuchsian hyperbolic 3-manifold is equal, up to an additive constant, to the volume of its convex core. We also provide a precise upper bound on the renormalized volume in terms of the Weil-Petersson distance between the conformal structures at infinity. As a consequence we show that holomorphic disks in Teichmüller space which are large enough must have "enough" negative curvature.
For $0<k<1$, a finite-type $k$-surface in $3$-dimensional hyperbolic space is a complete, immersed surface of finite area and of constant extrinsic curvature equal to $k$. In [32], we showed that such surfaces have finite genus and finitely many cusp-like ends. Each of these cusps is asymptotic to an immersed cylinder of exponentially decaying radius about a complete geodesic and terminates at an ideal point which we call the extremity of the cusp. We show that every cusp of any finite-type $k$-surface has a well-defined axis, which we will call the Steiner geodesic of the cusp. One of its end…
We show that a properly convex projective structure $\mathfrak{p}$ on a closed oriented surface of negative Euler characteristic arises from a Weyl connection if and only if $\mathfrak{p}$ is hyperbolic. We phrase the problem as a non-linear PDE for a Beltrami differential by using that $\mathfrak{p}$ admits a compatible Weyl connection if and only if a certain holomorphic curve exists. Turning this non-linear PDE into a transport equation, we obtain our result by applying methods from geometric inverse problems. In particular, we use an extension of a remarkable $L^2$-energy identity known as…
