For $0<k<1$, a finite-type $k$-surface in $3$-dimensional hyperbolic space is a complete, immersed surface of finite area and of constant extrinsic curvature equal to $k$. In [32], we showed that such surfaces have finite genus and finitely many cusp-like ends. Each of these cusps is asymptotic to an immersed cylinder of exponentially decaying radius about a complete geodesic and terminates at an ideal point which we call the extremity of the cusp. We show that every cusp of any finite-type $k$-surface has a well-defined axis, which we will call the Steiner geodesic of the cusp. One of its end-points is the extremity, and we will call the other, which constitutes new geometric data, the Steiner point of the cusp. We prove a new identity involving extremities and Steiner points in terms of Möbius invariant vector fields over the Riemann sphere.
We define two new functionals over the space of finite-type $k$-surfaces. The first, which will be called the generalized volume, is defined by the integral of a certain well-chosen form, and extends to the non-embedded case the concept of volume of the set bounded by the surface. The second, which will be called the renormalized energy, is related to the integral of the mean curvature of the surface, and is well-defined up to a choice of Busemann function. Upon describing natural parametrisations of the strata of the space of finite-type $k$-surfaces by open complex manifolds, we prove a new Schläfli-type formula relating the extremities and Steiner points to the first order variations of the generalized volume and the renormalized energy. In particular, Möbius invariance of this formula yields the aforementioned identity. We conclude by studying some applications of this identity and Schläfli-type formula.
This textbook is an introductory course on hyperbolic geometry, intended for students at the advanced undergraduate (Bachelor) or early graduate (Master) level.
Generalizing the result of Li and Tam for the hyperbolic spaces, we prove an existence theorem on the Dirichlet problem for harmonic maps with $C^1$ boundary conditions at infinity between asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds.
It is extended a result due to B. Guan and J. Spruck on the asymptotic Plateau's problem for CMC radial graphs in hyperbolic space to horizontal CMC graphs.
This paper considers asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds with a finite boundary intersecting the usual infinite boundary -- cornered asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds -- and proves a theorem of Cartan-Hadamard type near infinity for the normal exponential map on the finite boundary. As a main application, a normal form for such manifolds at the corner is then constructed, analogous to the normal form for usual asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds and suited to studying geometry at the corner. The normal form is at the same time a submanifold normal form near the finite boundary and an asympto…
We prove in a simple and coordinate-free way the equivalence bteween the classical definitions of the mass or the center of mass of an asymptotically flat manifold and their alternative definitions depending on the Ricci tensor and conformal Killing fields. This enables us to prove an analogous statement in the asymptotically hyperbolic case.
We prove the existence of a complete locally Lipschitz continuous hypersurface in weak sense with prescribed Weingarten curvature and asymptotic boundary at infinity in hyperbolic space under certain assumptions.
This is the second in a series of papers where we estab- lish skin structural concepts and results for singular area minimizing hypersurfaces. Here we conformally unfold these spaces to complete Gromov hyperbolic spaces with bounded geometry and we recover their singular set as the Gromov boundary but also as the Martin boundary for many classical elliptic operators.
We propose a Lie geometric point of view on flat fronts in hyperbolic space as special omega-surfaces and discuss the Lie geometric deformation of flat fronts.
We establish versions of the Positive Mass and Penrose inequalities for a class of asymptotically hyperbolic hypersurfaces. In particular, under the usual dominant energy condition, we prove in all dimensions $n\geq 3$ an optimal Penrose inequality for certain graphs in hyperbolic space $\mathbb H^{n+1}$ whose boundary has constant mean curvature $n-1$.
We observe inequalities involving the Herzlich volume of a 4-dimensional asymptotically complex hyperbolic Einstein manifold and its Euler characteristic provided the metrics is either Kaehler or selfdual. In the selfdual case we have to assume furthermore that the Kronheimer-Mrowka invariant is non vanishing.
Asymptotic subcone of an unbounded metric space is another metric space, capturing the structure of the original space at infinity. In this paper we define a functional metric space S which is an asymptotic subcone of the hyperbolic plane. This space is a real tree branching at every its point. Moreover, it is a homogeneous metric space such that any real tree with countably many vertices can be isometrically embedded into it. This implies that every such tree is also an asymptotic subcone of the hyperbolic plane.
We prove local injectivity near a boundary point for the geodesic X-ray transform for an asymptotically hyperbolic metric even mod $O(ρ^5)$ in dimensions three and higher.
In this paper, we will show that the limit of some quasilocal mass integrals of the coordinate spheres in an asymptotically hyperbolic (AH) manifold is the mass integral of the AH manifold. This is the analogue of the well known result that the limit of the Brown-York mass of coordinate spheres is the ADM mass in an asymptotically flat manifold.
In the 1980s Alano Ancona developed a profound potential theory on Gromov hyperbolic manifolds of bounded geometry. Since then, such hyperbolic spaces have become basic in geometry, topology and group theory. In this paper we make Ancona's original work, addressed to a rather advanced audience, approachable for a wider readership without firm background in potential theory. We streamline the arguments to make the results depend only on coarse geometro-analytic invariants and we derive useful details not found in the original sources. We explain remarkable relations of these results to recent d…
Any Kaehler metric on the ball which is strongly asymptotic to complex hyperbolic space and whose scalar curvature is no less than the one of the complex hyperbolic space must be isometrically biholomorphic to it. This result has been known for some time in odd complex dimension and we provide here a proof in even dimension.
In this paper we describe trigonometry on the de Sitter surface. For that a characterization of geodesics is given, leading to various types of triangles. We define lengths and angles of these. Then, transferring the concept of polar triangles from spherical geometry into the Minkowski space, we relate hyperbolic with de Sitter triangles such that the proof of the hyperbolic law of cosines for angles becomes much clearer and easier than it is traditionally. Furthermore, polar triangles turn out to be a powerful tool for describing de Sitter trigonometry.
This paper generalizes a rigidity result of complex hyperbolic spaces by M. Herzlich. We prove that an almost Hermitian spin manifold $(M,g)$ of real dimension $4n+2$ which is strongly asymptotic to $\hyp{\C}^{2n+1}$ and satisfies a certain scalar curvature bound must be isometric to the complex hyperbolic space. The fact that we do not assume $g$ to be Kähler reflects in the inequality for the scalar curvature.
Phase plotting is a useful way of visualising functions on complex space. We reinvent the method in the context of hyperbolic geometry, and we use it to plot functions on various representative surfaces for hyperbolic space, illustrating with direct motions in particular. The reinvention is nontrivial, and we discuss the essential features for ensuring that such visualisations convey useful information. Our approach is to exploit conformal maps between representative surfaces, in order to uniquely represent the preimages of geodesics. Our considerations and methods are prototypical of what one…
The existence of a smooth complete strictly locally convex hypersurface with prescribed scalar curvature and asymptotic boundary at infinity in $\mathbb{H}^{3}$ is proved under the assumption that there exists a strictly locally convex subsolution.
We show that, on any asymptotically hyperbolic surface, the essential spectrum of the Lichnerowicz Laplacian $Δ_L$ contains the ray $[{1/4},+\infty[$. If moreover the scalar curvature is constant then -2 and 0 are infinite dimensional eigenvalues. If, in addition, the inequality $<Δu, u>_{L^2}\geq \frac14||u||^2_{L^2}$ holds for all smooth compactly supported function $u$, then there is no other value in the spectrum.
A report on an article of Calegari, Marques and Neves about counting minimal surfaces. An idea of a proof is included using the concept of a laminar measure.
We show that asymptotically hyperbolic solutions of the Einstein constraint equations with constant mean curvature can be glued in such a way that their asymptotic regions are connected.
Asymptotic behavior of energy of a harmonic map defined on an asymptotically hyperbolic manifold is considered. Using the growth of energy, we show that a harmonic map defined on some asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds has to be constant if the total energy is finite, or if the map approaches a point fast enough, in terms of a defining function for the boundary.
We discuss asymptotically hyperbolic manifold with a noncompact boundary which is close to a horosphere in a certain sense. The model case is a horoball or the complement of a horoball in standard hyperbolic space. We show some geometric formulas.
We study geometry, topology and deformation spaces of noncompact complex hyperbolic manifolds (geometrically finite, with variable negative curvature), whose properties make them surprisingly different from real hyperbolic manifolds with constant negative curvature. This study uses an interaction between Kähler geometry of the complex hyperbolic space and the contact structure at its infinity (the one-point compactification of the Heisenberg group), in particular an established structural theorem for discrete group actions on nilpotent Lie groups.
We study the spectral theory of asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds with ends of warped product type. Our main result is an upper bound on the resonance counting function with a geometric constant expressed in terms of the respective Weyl constants for the core of the manifold and the base manifold defining the ends.
We introduce a geometric transition between two homogeneous three-dimensional geometries: hyperbolic geometry and anti de Sitter (AdS) geometry. Given a path of three-dimensional hyperbolic structures that collapse down onto a hyperbolic plane, we describe a method for constructing a natural continuation of this path into AdS structures. In particular, when hyperbolic cone manifolds collapse, the AdS manifolds generated on the "other side" of the transition have tachyon singularities. The method involves the study of a new transitional geometry called half-pipe geometry. We demonstrate these m…
Using the upper half space model, we evaluate a component of the hyperbolic mass functional evaluated on a special family of polyhedra extending a formula of Miao-Piubello.
We describe a hyperbolic version of the Ambartzumian-Pleijel identity. We use this identity to prove the hyperbolic Crofton formula and the hyperbolic isoperimetric inequality. This identity also provides a way to compute the chord length distribution for an ideal polygon in the hyperbolic plane. The analogous results for a maximally symmetric, simply connected, $2$-dimensional Riemannian manifold with constant sectional curvature are given at the end.
We prove a persistence result for noncompact normally hyperbolic invariant manifolds in Riemannian manifolds of bounded geometry. The bounded geometry of the ambient manifold is a crucial assumption in order to control the uniformity of all estimates throughout the proof.
For asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds of dimension $n$ with scalar curvature at least equal to $-n(n-1)$ the conjectured positive mass theorem states that the mass is non-negative, and vanishes only if the manifold is isometric to hyperbolic space. In this paper we study asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds which are also conformally hyperbolic outside a ball of fixed radius, and for which the positive mass theorem holds. For such manifolds we show that the conformal factor tends to one as the mass tends to zero.
We provide a Hilbert manifold structure {à} la Bartnik for the space of asymptotically hyperbolic initial data for the vacuum constraint equations. The adaptation led us to prove new weighted Poincar{é} and Korn type inequalities for AH manifolds with inner boundary and weakly regular metric.
We study the analytic torsion of odd-dimensional hyperbolic orbifolds $Γ\backslash \mathbb{H}^{2n+1}$, depending on a representation of $Γ$. Our main goal is to understand the asymptotic behavior of the analytic torsion with respect to sequences of representations associated to rays of highest weights.
A 4-manifold is constructed with some curious metric properties; or maybe it is many 4-manifolds masquerading as one, which would explain why it looks curious. Anyway, knots in the 3-sphere with complete finite volume hyperbolic metrics on their complements play a role in this story.
We show that if a Jordan curve C in the asymptotic sphere contains a smooth point, there is an embedded H-plane in H^3 asymptotic to C for any H in [0,1).
We show that many hyperbolic monopoles can be distinguished from each other via their asymptotic values in contrast to the case of Euclidean monopoles.
In this paper we study asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds given as graphs of asymptotically constant functions over hyperbolic space $\bH^n$. The graphs are considered as subsets of $\bH^{n+1}$ and carry the induced metric. For such manifolds the scalar curvature appears in the divergence of a 1-form involving the integrand for the asymptotically hyperbolic mass. Integrating this divergence we estimate the mass by an integral over an inner boundary. In case the inner boundary satisfies a convexity condition this can in turn be estimated in terms of the area of the inner boundary. The resultin…
We introduce a class of "weakly asymptotically hyperbolic" geometries whose sectional curvatures tend to $-1$ and are $C^0$, but are not necessarily $C^1$, conformally compact. We subsequently investigate the rate at which curvature invariants decay at infinity, identifying a conformally invariant tensor which serves as an obstruction to "higher order decay" of the Riemann curvature operator. Finally, we establish Fredholm results for geometric elliptic operators, extending the work of Rafe Mazzeo and John M. Lee to this setting. As an application, we show that any weakly asymptotically hyperb…
These notes are an extended version of a talk given by the author in the seminar "Theorie Spectrale et Geometrie" at the Institut Fourier in No- vember 2016. We present here some aspects of a work in collaboration with B. Collier and N. Tholozan (arXiv:1702.08799). We describe how Higgs bundle theory and pseudo-hyperbolic geometry interfere in the study of maximal representations into Hermitian Lie groups of rank 2.
In this paper, we solve the asymptotic Plateau problem in hyperbolic space for constant $σ_{n-1}$ curvature, i.e. the existence of a complete hypersurface in $\mathbb{H}^{n+1}$ satisfying $σ_{n-1}(κ)=σ\in (0,n)$ with a prescribed asymptotic boundary $Γ$. The key ingredient is the curvature estimates. Previously, this is only known for $σ_0<σ<n$, where $σ_0$ is a positive constant.
We prove that for certain sequences of hyperbolic three--manifolds with cusps which converge to hyperbolic three--space in a weak ("Benjamini-Schramm") sense and certain coefficient systems the regularized analytic torsion approximates the $L^2$-torsion of the universal cover under an additional hypothesis. We also prove an asymptotic equality between the former and some Reidemeister torsion of the truncated manifolds.
We investigate on the existence of smooth complete hypersurface with prescribed Weingarten curvature and asymptotic boundary at infinity in hyperbolic space under the assumption that there exists an asymptotic subsolution. We give an affirmative answer for the case $k = n$ when the asymptotic boundary $Γ$ bounds a uniformly convex domain, and for $k < n$ when $Γ$ bounds a disk, utilizing Pogorelov type interior second order estimate. Our result complements our previous work \cite{Sui2019, Sui-Sun}, and generalizes the asymptotic Plateau type problem to non-constant prescribed curvature case.
We give estimates on asymptotic dimensions of products of general hyperbolic spaces with following applications to the hyperbolic groups. We give examples of strict inequality in the product theorem for the asymptotic dimension in the class of the hyperbolic groups; and examples of strict inequality in the product theorem for the hyperbolic dimension. We prove that R is dimensionally full for the asymptotic dimension in the class of the hyperbolic groups.
We define a mass-type invariant for asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds with a noncompact boundary which are modelled at infinity on the hyperbolic half-space and prove a sharp positive mass inequality in the spin case under suitable dominant energy conditions. As an application we show that any such manifold which is Einstein and either has a totally geodesic boundary or is conformally compact and has a mean convex boundary is isometric to the hyperbolic half-space.
The general theory of parabolic geometries is applied to the study of the normal Cartan connections for all hyperbolic and elliptic 6-dimensional CR-manifolds of codimension two. The geometric meaning of the individual components of the torsion is explained and the chains of dimensions one and two are discussed. This seems to be the first application of the general methods to a geometry with a non-connected and non-simple structure group.
In this short note, a question of patching together globally hyperbolic manifolds is adressed which appeared in the context of the construction of Hadamard states.
In a previous paper, the authors showed that metrics which are asymptotic to Anti-de Sitter-Schwarzschild metrics with positive mass admit a unique foliation by stable spheres with constant mean curvature. In this paper we extend that result to all asymptotically hyperbolic metrics for which the trace of the mass term is positive. We do this by combining the Kazdan-Warner obstructions with a theorem due to De Lellis and Müller.
We use hyperbolic geometry to construct simply-connected symplectic or complex manifolds with trivial canonical bundle and with no compatible Kahler structure. We start with the desingularisations of the quadric cone in C^4: the smoothing is a natural S^3-bundle over H^3, its holomorphic geometry is determined by the hyperbolic metric; the small-resolution is a natural S^2-bundle over H^4 with symplectic geometry determined by the metric. Using hyperbolic geometry, we find orbifold quotients with trivial canonical bundle; smooth examples are produced via crepant resolutions. In particular, we …
We relate small 1-form Laplacian eigenvalues to relative cycle complexity on closed hyperbolic manifolds: small eigenvalues correspond to closed geodesics no multiple of which bounds a surface of small genus. We describe potential applications of this equivalence principle toward proving optimal torsion homology growth in families of hyperbolic 3-manifolds Benjamini-Schramm converging to $\mathbb{H}^3.$
In the spirit of Otal and Croke, we prove that a negatively-curved asymptotically hyperbolic surface is boundary distance rigid, where the distance between two points on the boundary at infinity is defined by a renormalized quantity.
We construct transformations which take asymptotically AdS hyperbolic initial data into asymptotically flat initial data, and which preserve relevant physical quantities. This is used to derive geometric inequalities in the asymptotically AdS hyperbolic setting from counterparts in the asymptotically flat realm, whenever a geometrically motivated system of elliptic equations admits a solution. The inequalities treated here relate mass, angular momentum, charge, and horizon area.
