The general theory of parabolic geometries is applied to the study of the normal Cartan connections for all hyperbolic and elliptic 6-dimensional CR-manifolds of codimension two. The geometric meaning of the individual components of the torsion is explained and the chains of dimensions one and two are discussed. This seems to be the first application of the general methods to a geometry with a non-connected and non-simple structure group.
In this paper we investigate the convergence for the mean curvature flow of closed submanifolds with arbitrary codimension in space forms. Particularly, we prove that the mean curvature flow deforms a closed submanifold satisfying a pinching condition in a hyperbolic space form to a round point in finite time.
In this paper, we prove that if the initial submanifold $M_0$ of dimension $n(\ge6)$ satisfies an optimal pinching condition, then the mean curvature flow of arbitrary codimension in hyperbolic spaces converges to a round point in finite time. In particular, we obtain the optimal differentiable sphere theorem for submanifolds in hyperbolic spaces. It should be emphasized that our pinching condition implies that the Ricci curvature of the initial submanifold is positive, but does not imply positivity of the sectional curvature of $M_0$.
Although the Nash theorem solves the isometric embedding problem, matters are inherently more involved if one is further seeking an embedding that is well-behaved from the standpoint of submanifold geometry. More generally, consider a Lipschitz map $F:M^m\to\mathbb R^n$, where $M^m$ is a Hadamard manifold whose curvature lies between negative constants. The main result of this paper is that $F$ must perform a substantial compression: For every $r>0$ and integer $k\geq 2$ there exist $k$ geodesic balls of radius $r$ in $M^m$ that are arbitrarily far from each other, but whose images under $F$ a…
We present several local and global results on isometric immersions of Kaehler manifolds $M^{2n}$ into hyperbolic space $\Hy^{2n+p}$. For instance, a classification is given in the case of dimension $n\geq 4$ and codimension $p=2$. Moreover, as corollaries of general results, we conclude that there are no isometric immersion in codimension $p\leq n-2$ if the Kaehler manifold is of dimension $n\geq 4$ and either has a point of positive holomorphic sectional curvature or is compact.
We show uniqueness of cylindrical blowups for mean curvature flow in all dimension and all codimension. Cylindrical singularities are known to be the most important; they are the most prevalent in any codimension. Mean curvature flow in higher codimension is a nonlinear parabolic system where many of the methods used for hypersurfaces do not apply and uniqueness of cylindrical blowups remained a major open problem. Our results imply regularity of the singular set for the system.
In the present paper we suggest an explicit construction of a Cartan connection for an elliptic or hyperbolic CR manifold M of dimension six and codimension two, i.e. a pair (P, w), consisting of a principal bundle P over M and of a Cartan connection form w on P, satisfying the following property: the (local) CR transformations of M are in one to one correspondence with the (local) automorphisms of P which preserve w. For any point x in M, this construction determines an explicit immersion of the stability subalgebra Lie(aut(M)_x) into the Lie algebra Lie(H) of the structure group H of P.
In the present paper we consider a special class of spacelike surfaces in the Minkowski 4-space which are one-parameter systems of meridians of the rotational hypersurface with timelike or spacelike axis. They are called meridian surfaces of elliptic or hyperbolic type, respectively. We study these surfaces with respect to their Gauss map. We find all meridian surfaces of elliptic or hyperbolic type with harmonic Gauss map and give the complete classification of meridian surfaces of elliptic or hyperbolic type with pointwise 1-type Gauss map.
In this paper we study a geometric configuration of submanifolds of arbitrary codimension in an ambient Riemannian space. We obtain relations between the geometry of a q-codimension submanifold Mn along its boundary and the geometry of the boundary of Mn as an hypersuface of a q-codimensional submanifold Pn in an ambient space Mn+q. As a consequence of these geometric ralations we get that the ellipticity of the generalized Newton transformations implies the tranversality of Mn and Pn in Pn is totally geodesic in Mn+q.
We study the class of spacelike surfaces in the four-dimensional Minkowski space whose mean curvature vector at any point is a non-zero spacelike vector or timelike vector. These surfaces are determined up to a motion by eight invariant functions satisfying some natural conditions. The subclass of Chen surfaces is characterized by the condition one of these invariants to be zero. In the present paper we describe all Chen spacelike rotational surfaces of hyperbolic or elliptic type.
In the present paper we carry out a systematic study about the flow of a spherical curve by the mean curvature flow with density in a 3-dimensional rotationally symmetric space with density $(M^3_w,\:g_w,\:ξ)$ where the density $ξ$ decomposes as sum of a radial part $φ$ and an angular part $ψ$. We analyse how either the parabolicity or the hyperbolicity of $(M^3_w,\:g_w)$ condition the behaviour of the flow when the solution goes to infinity.
We consider a special class of spacelike surfaces in the Minkowski 4-space which are one-parameter systems of meridians of the rotational hypersurface with timelike or spacelike axis. We call these surfaces meridian surfaces of elliptic or hyperbolic type, respectively. On the base of our invariant theory of surfaces we study meridian surfaces with special invariants and give the complete classification of the meridian surfaces with constant Gauss curvature or constant mean curvature. We also classify the Chen meridian surfaces and the meridian surfaces with parallel normal bundle.
Based on works by Hopf, Weinberger, Hamilton and Evans, we state and prove the strong elliptic maximum principle for smooth sections in vector bundles over Riemannian manifolds and give some applications in Differential Geometry. Moreover, we use this maximum principle to obtain various rigidity theorems and Bernstein type theorems in higher codimension for minimal maps between Riemannian manifolds.
In this paper, we show that the quotient space of the domain by the reflection group for an elliptic root system has a structure of Frobenius manifold for the case of codimension 1. We also give a characterization of this Frobenius manifold structure under some suitable condition.
Assume that $f(s) = F'(s)$ where $F$ is a double-well potential. Under certain conditions on the Lipschitz constant of $f$ on $[-1,1]$, we prove that arbitrary bounded global solutions of the semilinear equation $Δu = f(u)$ on hyperbolic space $\HH^n$ must reduce to functions of one variable provided they admit asymptotic boundary values on the infinite boundary of $\HH^n$ which are invariant under a cohomogeneity one subgroup of the group of isometries of $\HH^n$. We also prove existence of these one-dimensional solutions.
Let $X$ be a Hadamard manifold with pinched negative curvature $-b^2\leqκ\leq -1$. Suppose $Σ\subseteq X$ is a totally geodesic, codimension-1 submanifold and consider the geodesic flow $Φ^ν_t$ on $X$ generated by a unit normal vector field $ν$ on $Σ$. We say the normal growth exponent of $Σ$ in $X$ is at most $β$ if \[ \lim_{t \rightarrow \pm \infty} \frac{ \Vert d Φ_t^ν\Vert_{\infty} }{ e^{β\vert t \vert}} < \infty, \] where $\Vert d Φ_t^ν\Vert_{\infty} $ is the supremum of the operator norm of $d Φ_t^ν$ over all points of $Σ$. We show that if $Σ$ is bi-Lipschitz to hyperbolic $n$-space $\ma…
We give a simple topological argument to show that the number of solutions of the asymptotic Plateau problem in hyperbolic space is generically unique. In particular, we show that the space of codimension-1 closed submanifolds of sphere at infinity, which bounds a unique absolutely area minimizing hypersurface in hyperbolic n-space, is dense in the space of all codimension-1 closed submanifolds at infinity. In dimension 3, we also prove that the set of uniqueness curves in asymptotic sphere for area minimizing planes is generic in the set of Jordan curves at infinity. We also give some nonuniq…
The heat coefficients related to the Laplace-Beltrami operator defined on the hyperbolic compact manifold $H^3/\Ga$ are evaluated in the case in which the discrete group $\Ga$ contains elliptic and hyperbolic elements. It is shown that while hyperbolic elements give only exponentially vanishing corrections to the trace of the heat kernel, elliptic elements modify all coefficients of the asymptotic expansion, but the Weyl term, which remains unchanged. Some physical consequences are briefly discussed in the examples.
