Extended results to include singular arcs by slightly changing the definition of one of the sets under consideration. This improvement was suggested by Mircea Mustata
For a normalized transcendence degree zero arc valuation v on a nonsingular variety X (with dim X > 1), we describe the maximal irreducible subset C(v) of the arc space of X such that the valuation given by the order of vanishing along a general arc of C(v) equals v. We describe C(v) both algebraically, in terms of the sequence of valuation ideals of v, and geometrically, in terms of the sequence of infinitely near points associated to v. When X is a surface, our construction also applies to any divisorial valuation v, and in this case C(v) coincides with a subset Ein, Lazarsfeld, and Mustata associate to v.
For any split totally degenerate abelian variety over a complete discrete valuation field, we construct a log abelian variety over the discrete valuation ring extending the given abelian variety. This generalizes the log Tate curve of Kato.
For a semi-stable abelian variety A_K over a complete discrete valuation field K, we show that every finite subgroup scheme of A_K extends to a log finite flat group scheme over the valuation ring of K endowed with the canonical log structure. To achieve this, we first prove that every weak log abelian variety over an fs log scheme with its underlying scheme locally noetherian, is a sheaf for the Kummer flat topology, which answers a question of Chikara Nakayama. We also give several equivalent conditions defining isogenies of log abelian varieties.
For classical groups SL(n), SO(n) and Sp(2n), we define uniformly geometric valuations on the corresponding complete flag varieties. The valuation in every type comes from a natural coordinate system on the open Schubert cell and is combinatorially related to the Gelfand-Zetlin pattern in the same type. In types A and C, we identify the corresponding Newton-Okounkov polytopes with the Feigin-Fourier-Littelmann-Vinberg polytopes. In types B and D, we compute low-dimensional examples and formulate open questions.
We show that any normal toric variety over a rank one valuation ring admits an equivariant open embedding in a normal toric variety which is proper over the valuation ring, after a base-change by a finite extension of valuation rings. If the value group $Γ$ is discrete or divisible then no base-change is needed. We give explicit examples which show that existing methods do not produce such normal equivariant completions. Our approach is combinatorial and proceeds by showing that $Γ$-admissible fans admit $Γ$-admissible completions. In order to show this we prove a combinatorial analog of noeth…
Finite flat commutative group schemes over complete discrete valuation fields: classification, structural results; application to reduction of Abelian varieties
We address the description of the tropicalization of families of rational varieties under parametrizations with prescribed support, via curve valuations. We recover and extend results by Sturmfels, Tevelev and Yu for generic coefficients, considering rational parametrizations with non-trivial denominator. The advantage of our point of view is that it can be generalized to deal with non-generic parametrizations. We provide a detailed analysis of the degree of the closed image, based on combinatorial conditions on the relative positions of the supports of the polynomials defining the parametriza…
In this survey I summarize the constructions of toric degenerations obtained from valuations and Gröbner theory and describe in which sense they are equivalent. I show how adapted bases can be used to generalize the classical Newton polytope to what is called a $\mathbb B$-Newton polytope. The $\mathbb B$-Newton polytope determines the Newton--Okounkov polytopes of all Khovanskii-finite valuations sharing the adapted standard monomial basis $\mathbb B$.
Let $K$ be the fraction field of a Henselian discrete valuation ring with algebraically closed residue field $k$. In this article we give a sufficient criterion for a projective variety over such a field to have index $1$.
Finite flat commutative group schemes over complete discrete valuation rings III: classification, tangent spaces, and semistable reduction of Abelian varieties
\begin{theor} $V$ has semistable reduction over $K$ if and only if for some group scheme $H$ over $\mathfrak{O}_K$ there exist embeddings of $H_K$ into $\operatorname{Ker}[p^{l}]_{V,K}$, and…
We show that for a K-unstable Fano variety, any divisorial valuation computing its stability threshold induces a non-trivial special test configuration preserving the stability threshold. When such a divisorial valuation exists, we show that the Fano variety degenerates to a uniquely determined twisted K-polystable Fano variety. We also show that the stability threshold can be approximated by divisorial valuations induced by special test configurations. As an application of the above results and the analytic work of Datar, Székelyhidi, and Ross, we deduce that greatest Ricci lower bounds of Fa…
Assume that the valuation semigroup $Γ(λ)$ of an arbitrary partial flag variety corresponding to the line bundle $\mathcal L_λ$ constructed via a full-rank valuation is finitely generated and saturated. We use Ehrhart theory to prove that the associated Newton-Okounkov body, which happens to be a rational, convex polytope, contains exactly one lattice point in its interior if and only if $\mathcal L_λ$ is the anticanonical line bundle. Furthermore we use this unique lattice point to construct the dual polytope of the Newton-Okounkov body and prove that this dual is a lattice polytope using a r…
We show that there exists a strong connection between the generic formal neighborhood at a rational arc lying in the Nash set associated with a toric divisorial valuation on a toric variety and the formal neighborhood at the generic point of the same Nash set. This may be interpreted as the fact that, analytically along such a Nash set, the arc scheme of a toric variety is a product of a finite dimensional singularity and an infinite dimensional affine space.
We study the relation between the integer tropical points of a cluster variety (satisfying the full Fock-Goncharov conjecture) and the totally positive part of the tropicalization of an ideal presenting the corresponding cluster algebra. Suppose we are given a presentation of the cluster algebra by a Khovanskii basis for a collection of ${\bf g}$-vector valuations associated with several seeds related by mutations. In presence of a full rank fully extended exchange matrix we construct the rays of a subfan of the totally positive part of the tropicalization of the ideal that coincides combinato…
Let $\mathcal{O}_K$ be a discrete valuation ring with fraction field $K$ of characteristic $0$ and algebraically closed residue field $k$ of characteristic $p > 0$. Let $A/K$ be an abelian variety of dimension $g$ with a $K$-rational point of order $p$. In this article, we are interested in the reduction properties that $A/K$ can have. After discussing the general case, we specialize to $g=1$, and we study the possible Kodaira types that can occur.
Fujita and Li have given a characterisation of K-stability of a Fano variety in terms of quantities associated to valuations, which has been essential to all recent progress in the area. We introduce a notion of valuative stability for arbitrary polarised varieties, and show that it is equivalent to K-stability with respect to test configurations with integral central fibre. The numerical invariant governing valuative stability is modelled on Fujita's beta invariant, but includes a term involving the derivative of the volume. We give several examples of valuatively stable and unstable varietie…
Let $R$ be a positively graded finitely generated $\textbf{k}$-domain with Krull dimension $d+1$. We show that there is a homogeneous valuation $\mathfrak{v}: R \setminus \{0\} \to \mathbb{Z}^d$ of rank $d$ such that the associated graded $\text{gr}_\mathfrak{v}(R)$ is finitely generated. This then implies that any polarized $d$-dimensional projective variety $X$ has a flat deformation over $\mathbb{A}^1$, with reduced and irreducible fibers, to a polarized projective complexity-one $T$-variety (i.e. a variety with a faithful action of a $(d-1)$-dimensional torus $T$). As an application we con…
In this note, we consider function fields of higher-dimensional algebraic varieties defined over non-local fields, and show how the Galois action on the cohomology such function fields can be used to parameterize their divisorial valuations. By applying a recent theorem of Pop, we observe that, in dimension $\geq 3$, this information is enough to completely determine the function field and the base-field in question.
