The Dynnikov coordinate system puts global coordinates on the boundary of Teichmüller space of an $n$--punctured disk. We survey the Dynnikov coordinate system, and investigate how we use this coordinate system to study pseudo--Anosov braids making use of results from Thurston's theory on surface homeomorphisms.
The central extension of the Thompson group $T$ that arises in the quantized Teichmüller theory is 12 times the Euler class. This extension is obtained by taking a (partial) abelianization of the so-called braided Ptolemy-Thompson group introduced and studied in \cite{FK2}. We describe then the cyclic central extensions of $T$ by means of explicit presentations.
In this paper we determine the automorphism groups of the profinite braid groups with four or more strings in terms of the profinite Grothendieck-Teichmüller group.
In 1987 Bieri, Neumann and Strebel introduced a geometric invariant for discrete groups. In this article we compute and explicitly describe the BNS-invariant for the pure braid groups.
In this paper we introduce the framed pure braid group on $n$ strands of an oriented surface, a topological generalisation of the pure braid group $P_n$. We give different equivalents definitions for framed pure braid groups and we study exact sequences relating these groups with other generalisations of $P_n$, usually called surface pure braid groups. The notion of surface framed braid groups is also introduced.
Finite type invariants (also known as Vassiliev invariants) of pure braids are considered from a group-theoretic point of view. New results include a construction of a universal invariant with integer coefficients based on the Magnus expansion of a free group and a calculation of numbers of independent invariants of each type for all pure braid groups.
In this note we show that any homomorphism from a pure surface braid group to a torsion-free hyperbolic group either has a cyclic image or factors through a forgetful map. This extends and gives a new proof of an earlier result of the author which works only when the target is a free group or a surface group. We also prove a similar rigidity result for the pure braid group of the disk.
This paper gives a new interpretation of the virtual braid group in terms of a strict monoidal category SC that is freely generated by one object and three morphisms, two of the morphisms corresponding to basic pure virtual braids and one morphism corresponding to a transposition in the symmetric group. The key to this approach is to take pure virtual braids as primary. The generators of the pure virtual braid group are abstract solutions to the algebraic Yang-Baxter equation. This point of view illuminates representations of the virtual braid groups and pure virtual braid groups via solutions…
We construct a group $Γ_{n}^{4}$ corresponding to the motion of points in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$ from the point of view of Delaunay triangulations. We study homomorphisms from pure braids on $n$ strands to the product of copies of $Γ_{n}^{4}$. We will also study the group of pure braids in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$, which is described by a fundamental group of the restricted configuration space of $\mathbb{R}^{3}$, and define the group homomorphism from the group of pure braids in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$ to $Γ_{n}^{4}$. In the end of this paper we give some comments about relations between the restricted configurat…
In the context of finite type invariants, Stanford introduced a family of equivalence relations on knots defined by the lower central series of the pure braid groups and characterized the finite type invariants in terms of the structure of the braid groups. It is known that this equivalence and Ohyama's equivalence defined by a local move are equivalent. On the other hand, in the virtual knot theory, the concept of Ohyama's equivalence was extended by Goussarov-Polyak-Viro, which called an $n$-equivalence. In this paper we extend Stanford's equivalence to virtual knots and virtual string links…
Two virtual link diagrams are homotopic if one may be transformed into the other by a sequence of virtual Reidemeister moves, classical Reidemeister moves, and self crossing changes. We recall the pure virtual braid group. We then describe the set of pure virtual braids that are homotopic to the identity braid.
Combining the results by Birman and Goldberg, it was proved the normal closure of the pure braid group of the disk $P_n(D)$ in the pure braid group of the torus $P_n(T)$ is the commutator subgroup $[P_n(T),P_n(T)]$. In this paper we are going to study the case for full braid groups: i.e. the normal closure of $B_n(D)$ in $B_n(T)$, which turns out to have an interesting geometric description.
We find finite presentations for the automorphism group of the Artin pure braid group and the automorphism group of the pure braid group associated to the full monomial group.
In the study of the relation between the mapping class group M of a surface and the theory of finite-type invariants of homology 3-spheres, three subgroups of the mapping class group play a large role. They are the Torelli group, the Johnson subgroup K and a new subgroup L, which contains K, defined by a choice of a Lagrangian subgroup of the homology of the surface. In this work we determine the quotient L/K, in terms of the precise description of M/K given by Johnson and Morita. We also study the lower central series of L and K, using some natural imbeddings of the pure braid group in L and …
We prove that the pure braid groups on closed, orientable surfaces are bi-orderable, and that the pure braid groups on closed, non-orientable surfaces have generalized torsion, thus they are not bi-orderable.
This article is dedicate to cabling on virtual braids. This construction gives a new generating set for the virtual pure braid group $VP_n$. Consequently we describe $VP_4$ as HNN-extension. As an application to classical braids, we find a new presentation of the Artin pure braid group $P_4$ in terms of the cabled generators.
Virtual knot theory has experienced a lot of nice features that did not appear in classical knot theory, e.g., parity and picture-valued invariants. In the present paper we use virtual knot theory effects to construct new representations of classical (pure) braids.
We show that the Artin pure braid group on at least four strands is not residually free. Our results also show that the pure braid group on at least three strands has corank two.
We study a certain type of braid closure which resembles the plat closure but has certain advantages; for example, it maps pure braids to knots. The main results of this note are a Markov-type theorem and a description of how Vassiliev invariants behave under this braid closure.
We show that two knots have matching Vassiliev invariants of order less than n if and only if they are equivalent modulo the nth group of the lower central series of some pure braid group, thus characterizing Vassiliev's knot invariants in terms of the structure of the braid groups. We also prove some results about knots modulo the nth derived subgroups of the pure braid groups, and about knots modulo braid subgroups in general.
In this mostly survey paper, we investigate the resonance varieties, the lower central series ranks, and the Chen ranks, as well as the residual and formality properties of several families of braid-like groups: the pure braid groups $P_n$, the welded pure braid groups $wP_n$, the virtual pure braid groups $vP_n$, as well as their `upper' variants, $wP_n^+$ and $vP_n^+$. We also discuss several natural homomorphisms between these groups, and various ways to distinguish among the pure braid groups and their relatives.
We show that any two elements of the pure braid group either commute or generate a free group, settling a question of Luis Paris. Our proof involves the theory of 3-manifolds and the theory of group actions on trees.
We give several new positive finite presentations for the pure braid group that are easy to remember and simple in form. All of our presentations involve a metric on the punctured disc so that the punctures are arranged "convexly", which is why we describe them as geometric presentaitons. Motivated by a presentation for the full braid group that we call the "rotation presentation", we introduce presentations for the pure braid group that we call the "twist presentation" and the "swing presentation". From the point of view of mapping class groups, the swing presentation can be interpreted as st…
We show that the problem of constructing a real rational knot of a reasonably low degree can be reduced to an algebraic problem involving the pure braid group: expressing an associated element of the pure braid group in terms of the standard generators of the pure braid group. We also predict the existence of a real rational knot in a degree that is expressed in terms of the edge number of its polygonal representation.
We introduce a certain type of representations for the quantum Teichmuller space of a punctured surface, which we call local representations. We show that, up to finitely many choices, these purely algebraic representations are classified by classical geometric data. We also investigate the family of intertwining operators associated to such a representations. In particular, we use these intertwiners to construct a natural fiber bundle over the Teichmuller space and its quotient under the action of the mapping class group. This construction also offers a convenient framework to exhibit invaria…
The question of whether a representation of Artin's pure braid group is faithful is translated to certain properties of the Lie algebra arising from the descending central series of the pure braid group, and thus the Vassiliev invariants of pure braids via work of T. Kohno \cite{kohno1,kohno2}. The main result is a Lie algebraic condition which guarantees that a homomorphism out of the classical pure braid group is faithful. However, it is unclear whether the methods here can be applied to any open cases such as the Gassner representation.
In this article, we investigate various properties of the pure virtual braid group PV_3. From its canonical presentation, we obtain a free product decomposition of PV_3. As a consequence, we show that PV_3 is residually torsion free nilpotent, which implies that the set of finite type invariants in the sense of Goussarov-Polyak-Viro is complete for virtual pure braids with three strands. Moreover we prove that the presentation of PV_3 is aspherical. Finally we determine the cohomology ring and the associated graded Lie algebra of PV_3.
We consider Thompson's groups from the perspective of mapping class groups of surfaces of infinite type. This point of view leads us to the braided Thompson groups, which are extensions of Thompson's groups by infinite (spherical) braid groups. We will outline the main features of these groups and some applications to the quantization of Teichmüller spaces. The chapter provides an introduction to the subject with an emphasis on some of the authors results.
We give formulae for the first homology of the $n$-braid group and the pure 2-braid group over a finite graph in terms of graph theoretic invariants. As immediate consequences, a graph is planar if and only if the first homology of the $n$-braid group over the graph is torsion-free and the conjectures about the first homology of the pure 2-braid groups over graphs in \cite{FH} can be verified. We discover more characteristics of graph braid groups: the $n$-braid group over a planar graph and the pure 2-braid group over any graph have a presentation whose relators are words of commutators, and …
We show that the fundamental group of the space of ordered affine-equivalent configurations of at least five points in the real plane is isomorphic to the pure braid group modulo its centre. In the case of four points this fundamental group is free with eleven generators.
We exhibit some families of subgroups of the pure braid group that are highly generating, in the sense of Abels and Holz. In one class of examples, the relevant geometric object is a complex termed the restricted arc complex of a surface. Another arises by considering "dangling braiges," introduced by Bux, Fluch, Schwandt, Witzel and the author.
Long and Moody gave a method of constructing representations of the braid group B_n. We discuss some ways to generalize their construction. One of these gives representations of subgroups of B_n, including the Gassner representation of the pure braid group as a special case. Another gives representations of the Hecke algebra.
Let $\text{Homeo}_+(D^2_n)$ be the group of orientation-preserving homeomorphisms of $D^2$ fixing the boundary pointwise and $n$ marked points as a set. Nielsen realization problem for the braid group asks whether the natural projection $p_n:\text{Homeo}_+(D^2_n)\to B_n:=π_0(\text{Homeo}_+(D^2_n))$ has a section over subgroups of $B_n$. All of the previous methods either use torsions or Thurston stability, which do not apply to the pure braid group $PB_n$, the subgroup of $B_n$ that fixes $n$ marked points pointwise. In this paper, we show that the pure braid group has no realization inside th…
In \cite{Manturov} the second author defined the $k$-free braid group with $n$ strands $G_{n}^{k}$. These groups appear naturally as groups describing dynamical systems of $n$ particles in some "general position". Moreover, in \cite{ManturovNikonov} the second author and I.M.Nikonov showed that $G_{n}^{k}$ is closely related classical braids. The authors showed that there are homomorphisms from the pure braids group on $n$ strands to $G_{n}^{3}$ and $G_{n}^{4}$ and they defined homomorphisms from $G_{n}^{k}$ to the free product of $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$. That is, there are invariants for pure free b…
We prove that the n th pure braid group of a nonorientable surface (closed or with boundary, but different from RP2) is residually 2-finite. Consequently, this group is residually nilpotent. The key ingredient in the closed case is the notion of p-almost direct product, which is a generalization of the notion of almost direct product. We prove therefore also some results on lower central series and augmentation ideals of p-almost direct products.
We prove a representation stability result for the Milnor fiber associated to the pure braid group. Our result connects previous work of Simona Settepenella to representation stability in the sense of Church--Ellenberg--Farb, answering a question of Graham Denham. We also use our result to compute the stable integral homology of the Milnor fiber.
We prove Farber's conjecture on the stable topological complexity of configuration spaces of graphs. The conjecture follows from a general lower bound derived from recent insights into the topological complexity of aspherical spaces. Our arguments apply equally to higher topological complexity.
We investigate the resonance varieties, lower central series ranks, and Chen ranks of the pure virtual braid groups and their upper-triangular subgroups. As an application, we give a complete answer to the 1-formality question for this class of groups. In the process, we explore various connections between the Alexander-type invariants of a finitely generated group and several of the graded Lie algebras associated to it, and discuss possible extensions of the resonance-Chen ranks formula in this context.
We study the minimal dilatation of pseudo-Anosov pure surface braids and provide upper and lower bounds as a function of genus and the number of punctures. For a fixed number of punctures, these bounds tend to infinity as the genus does. We also bound the dilatation of pseudo-Anosov pure surface braids away from zero and give a constant upper bound in the case of a sufficient number of punctures.
In this paper, we investigate the structure of the automorphism groups of pure braid groups. We prove that, for $n>3$, $\Aut(P_n)$ is generated by the subgroup $\Aut_c(P_n)$ of central automorphisms of $P_n$, the subgroup $\Aut(B_n)$ of restrictions of automorphisms of $B_n$ on $P_n$ and one extra automorphism $w_n$. We also investigate the lifting and extension problem for automorphisms of some well-known exact sequences arising from braid groups, and prove that that answers are negative in most cases. Specifically, we prove that no non-trivial central automorphism of $P_n$ can be extended to…
We use a variation on the commutator collection process to characterize those pure braids which become trivial when any one strand is deleted, or, more generally, those pure braids which become trivial when all the strands in any one of a list of sets of strands is deleted.
The aim of the present note is to show that the natural map from classical braids to virtual braids is an inclusion; this proof does not use any complete invariants of classical braids; it is based on the projection from virutal braids to classical braids (similar to the one given in \cite{Projection}); this projection is the idenitiy map on the set of virtual braids. The projection is well defined not only for the virtual braid group but also for the quotient group of the virtual (pure) braid group by the so-called virtualization move. The idea of this projection is closely related to the not…
A planar pure braid consists of $n$ descending smooth arcs, each connecting a point on one horizontal line $\ell_{1}$ to a point on a horizontal line $\ell_{2}$, which is required to be directly below the first point. Two arcs are allowed to cross, but no threefold intersections are allowed. The set $Γ_{n}$ of all planar pure braids on $n$ strands is a group with respect to a natural stacking operation. We show that $Γ_{n}$ is always a diagram group, in the sense of Guba and Sapir. A number of consequences follow, including biautomaticity and bi-orderability of the groups $Γ_{n}$. Moreover, ea…
In [V.O. Manturov, Non-reidemeister knot theory and its applications in dynamical systems, geometry, and topology, arxiv:1501.05208] the first named author gave the definition of $k$-free braid groups $G_n^k$. Here we establish connections between free braid groups, classical braid groups and free groups: we describe explicitly the homomorphism from (pure) braid group to $k$-free braid groups for important cases $k=3,4$. On the other hand, we construct a homomorphism from (a subgroup of) free braid groups to free groups. The relations established would allow one to construct new invariants of …
We study the structure of the virtual braid group. It is shown that the virtual braid group is a semi--direct product of the virtual pure braid group and the symmetric group. Also, it is shown that the virtual pure braid group is a semi--direct product of free groups. From these results we obtain a normal form of words in the virtual braid group. We introduce the concept of a universal braid group. This group contains the classical braid group and has as its quotient groups the singular braid group, virtual braid group, welded braid group, and classical braid group.
