Let $A$ be an elliptic operator on a compact manifold with boundary $M$, and let $\wp : \partial\M \to Y$ be a covering map, where $Y$ is a closed manifold. Let $A_C$ be a realization of $A$ subject to a coupling condition $C$ that is elliptic with parameter in the sector $Λ$. By a coupling condition we mean a nonlocal boundary condition that respects the covering structure of the boundary.
We prove that the resolvent trace $\Tr_{L^2} (A_C-λ)^{-N}$ for $N$ sufficiently large has a complete asymptotic expansion as $|λ| \to \infty$, $λ\in Λ$. In particular, the heat trace $\Tr_{L^2}e^{-tA_C}$ has a complete asymptotic expansion as $t \to 0^+$, and the $ζ$-function has a meromorphic extension to $\C$.
Sharp resolvent bounds for non-selfadjoint semiclassical elliptic quadratic differential operators are established, in the interior of the range of the associated quadratic symbol.
The paper reports on a recent construction of M-functions and Krein resolvent formulas for general closed extensions of an adjoint pair, and their implementation to boundary value problems for second-order strongly elliptic operators on smooth domains. The results are then extended to domains with $C^{1,1}$ Hölder smoothness, by use of a recently developed calculus of pseudodifferential boundary operators with nonsmooth symbols.
We study resolvents and spectral projections for quadratic differential operators under an assumption of partial ellipticity. We establish exponential-type resolvent bounds for these operators, including Kramers-Fokker-Planck operators with quadratic potentials. For the norms of spectral projections for these operators, we obtain complete asymptotic expansions in dimension one, and for arbitrary dimension, we obtain exponential upper bounds and the rate of exponential growth in a generic situation. We furthermore obtain a complete characterization of those operators with orthogonal spectral pr…
This paper is a continuation of the investigation of resolvents of elliptic operators on conic manifolds from math.AP/0410178 and math.AP/0410176 to the case of manifolds with boundary and realizations of operators under boundary conditions. We prove the existence of sectors of minimal growth for realizations of boundary value problems for cone operators under natural ellipticity conditions on the symbols. Special attention is devoted to the clarification of the analytic structure of the resolvent.
We establish multiparameter resolvent trace expansions for elliptic boundary value problems, polyhomogeneous both in the resolvent and the auxiliary parameter. The present analysis is rooted in the joint project with Matthias Lesch on multiparameter resolvent trace expansions on revolution surfaces with applications to regularized sums of zeta-determinants.
We consider general second order uniformly elliptic operators subject to homogeneous boundary conditions on open sets $ϕ(Ω)$ parametrized by Lipschitz homeomorphisms $ϕ$ defined on a fixed reference domain $Ω$. Given two open sets $ϕ(Ω)$, $\tilde ϕ(Ω)$ we estimate the variation of resolvents, eigenvalues and eigenfunctions via the Sobolev norm $\|\tilde ϕ-ϕ\|_{W^{1,p}(Ω)}$ for finite values of $p$, under natural summability conditions on eigenfunctions and their gradients. We prove that such conditions are satisfied for a wide class of operators and open sets, including open sets with Lipschit…
We consider an infinite planar straight strip perforated by small holes along a curve. In such domain, we consider a general second order elliptic operator subject to classical boundary conditions on the holes. Assuming that the perforation is non-periodic and satisfies rather weak assumptions, we describe all possible homogenized problems. Our main result is the norm resolvent convergence of the perturbed operator to a homogenized one in various operator norms and the estimates for the rate of convergence. On the basis of the norm resolvent convergence, we prove the convergence of the spectru…
We consider self-adjoint realizations of a second-order elliptic differential expression on ${\mathbb R}^n$ with singular interactions of $δ$ and $δ^\prime$-type supported on a compact closed smooth hypersurface in ${\mathbb R}^n$. In our main results we prove spectral asymptotics formulae with refined remainder estimates for the singular values of the resolvent difference between the standard self-adjoint realizations and the operators with a $δ$ and $δ^\prime$-interaction, respectively. Our technique makes use of general pseudodifferential methods, classical results on spectral asymptotics o…
In this note self-adjoint realizations of second order elliptic differential expressions with non-local Robin boundary conditions on a domain $Ω\subset\dR^n$ with smooth compact boundary are studied. A Schatten--von Neumann type estimate for the singular values of the difference of the $m$th powers of the resolvents of two Robin realizations is obtained, and for $m>\tfrac{n}{2}-1$ it is shown that the resolvent power difference is a trace class operator. The estimates are slightly stronger than the classical singular value estimates by M. Sh. Birman where one of the Robin realizations is repla…
For a strongly elliptic second-order operator $A$ on a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ it has been known for many years how to interpret the general closed $L_2(Ω)$-realizations of $A$ as representing boundary conditions (generally nonlocal), when the domain and coefficients are smooth. The purpose of the present paper is to extend this representation to nonsmooth domains and coefficients, including the case of Hölder $C^{\frac32+\varepsilon}$-smoothness, in such a way that pseudodifferential methods are still available for resolvent constructions and ellipticity considerations. We show…
We consider an arbitrary metric graph, to which we glue another graph with edges of lengths proportional to $\varepsilon$, where $\varepsilon$ is a small positive parameter. On such graph, we consider a general self-adjoint second order differential operator $\mathcal{H}_\varepsilon$ with varying coefficients subject to general vertex conditions; all coefficients in differential expression and vertex conditions are supposed to be analytic in $\varepsilon$. We introduce a special operator on a certain graph obtained by rescaling the aforementioned small edges and assume that it has no embedded …
In a planar infinite strip with a fast oscillating boundary we consider an elliptic operator assuming that both the period and the amplitude of the oscillations are small. On the oscillating boundary we impose Dirichlet, Neumann or Robin boundary condition. In all cases we describe the homogenized operator, establish the uniform resolvent convergence of the perturbed resolvent to the homogenized one, and prove the estimates for the rate of convergence. These results are obtained as the order of the amplitude of the oscillations is less, equal or greater than that of the period. It is shown tha…
For a second-order symmetric strongly elliptic operator A on a smooth bounded open set Ωin R^n with boundary Σ, the mixed problem is defined by a Neumann-type condition on a part Sigma_+ of the boundary and a Dirichlet condition on the other part Sigma_-. We show a Krein resolvent formula, where the difference between its resolvent and the Dirichlet resolvent is expressed in terms of operators acting on Sobolev spaces over Sigma_+. This is used to obtain a new Weyl-type spectral asymptotics formula for the resolvent difference (where upper estimates were known before), namely s_j j^{2/(n-1)}\t…
We consider various closed (and self-adjoint) extensions of elliptic differential expressions of the type $\cA=\sum_{0\le |α|,|β|\le m}(-1)^αD^αa_{α, β}(x)D^β$, $a_{α, β}(\cdot)\in C^{\infty}({\overlineΩ})$, on smooth (bounded or unbounded) domains in $\bbR^n$ with compact boundary. Using the concept of boundary triples and operator-valued Weyl-Titchmarsh functions, we prove various trace ideal properties of powers of resolvent differences of these closed realizations of $\cA$ and derive estimates on eigenvalues of certain self-adjoint realizations in spectral gaps of the Dirichlet realization…
Starting with an adjoint pair of operators, under suitable abstract versions of standard PDE hypotheses, we consider the Weyl M-function of extensions of the operators. The extensions are determined by abstract boundary conditions and we establish results on the relationship between the M-function as an analytic function of a spectral parameter and the spectrum of the extension. We also give an example where the M-function does not contain the whole spectral information of the resolvent, and show that the results can be applied to elliptic PDEs where the M-function corresponds to the Dirichlet…
Singular Green operators G appear typically as boundary correction terms in resolvents for elliptic boundary value problems on a domain Ω\subset R^n, and more generally they appear in the calculus of pseudodifferential boundary problems. In particular, the boundary term in a Krein resolvent formula is a singular Green operator. It is well-known in smooth cases that when G is of negative order -t on a bounded domain, its eigenvalues or s-numbers have the behavior (*) s_j(G) \sim c j^{-t/(n-1)} for j\to \infty, governed by the boundary dimension n-1. In some nonsmooth cases, upper estimates (**)…
For two-scale homogenization of a general class of asymptotically degenerating %uniformly strongly elliptic symmetric PDE systems with a critically scaled high contrast in periodic coefficients of a small period $\varepsilon$, we derive a two-scale limit resolvent problem under a single generic decomposition assumption for the `stiff' part. We show that this key assumption does hold for a large number of examples with a high contrast, both studied before and some recent ones, including those in linear elasticity and electromagnetism. Following ideas of V.V. Zhikov, under very mild restrictions…
Classical pseudodifferential operators A on closed manifolds are considered. It is shown that the basic properties of the canonical trace TR A introduced by Kontsevich and Vishik are easily proved by identifying it with the leading nonlocal coefficient C_0(A,P) in the trace expansion of A(P-λ)^{-N} (with an auxiliary elliptic operator P), as determined in a joint work with Seeley 1995. The definition of TR A is extended from the cases of noninteger order, or integer order and even-even parity on odd-dimensional manifolds, to the case of even-odd parity on even-dimensional manifolds. For the ge…
This paper considers how the eigenvalues of the Neumann problem for an elliptic operator depend on the domain. The proximity of two domains is measured in terms of the norm of the difference between the two resolvents corresponding to the reference domain and the perturbed domain, and the size of eigenfunctions outside the intersection of the two domains. This construction enables the possibility of comparing both nonsmooth domains and domains with different topology. An abstract framework is presented, where the main result is an asymptotic formula where the remainder is expressed in terms of…
We present a new multiparameter resolvent trace expansion for elliptic operators, polyhomogeneous in both the resolvent and auxiliary variables. For elliptic operators on closed manifolds the expansion is a simple consequence of the parameter dependent pseudodifferential calculus. As an additional nontrivial toy example we treat here Sturm-Liouville operators with separated boundary conditions. As an application we give a new formula, in terms of regularized sums, for the zeta-determinant of an infinite direct sum of Sturm-Liouville operators. The Laplace-Beltrami operator on a surface of revo…
We reconsider the norm resolvent limit of $-Δ+ V_\ell$ with $V_\ell$ tending to a point interaction in three dimensions. We are mainly interested in potentials $V_\ell$ modelling short range interactions of cold atomic gases. In order to ensure stability the interaction $V_\ell$ is required to have a strong repulsive core, such that $\lim_{\ell \to 0} \int V_\ell >0$. This situation is not covered in the previous literature.
For $2a$-order strongly elliptic operators $P$ generalizing $(-Δ)^a$, $0<a<1$, the treatment of the homogeneous Dirichlet problem on a bounded open set $Ω\subset R^n$ by pseudodifferential methods, has been extended in a recent joint work with Helmut Abels to nonsmooth settings, showing regularity theorems in $L_q$-Sobolev spaces $H_q^s$ for $1<q<\infty $, when $Ω$ is $C^{τ+1}$ with a finite $τ>2a$. Presently, we study the $L_q$-Dirichlet realizations of $P$ and $P^*$, showing invertibility or Fredholmness, finding smoothness results for the kernels and cokernels, and establishing similar resu…
This paper consists of two parts. In the first part, which is of more abstract nature, the notion of quasi boundary triples and associated Weyl functions is developed further in such a way that it can be applied to elliptic boundary value problems on non-smooth domains. A key feature is the extension of the boundary maps by continuity to the duals of certain range spaces, which directly leads to a description of all self-adjoint extensions of the underlying symmetric operator with the help of abstract boundary values. In the second part of the paper a complete description is obtained of all se…
In the first part of the paper we show Weyl type spectral asymptotic formulas for pseudodifferential operators $P_a$ of order $2a$, with type and factorization index $a\in R_+$, restricted to compact sets with boundary; this includes fractional powers of the Laplace operator. The domain and the regularity of eigenfunctions is described. In the second part, we apply this in a study of realizations $A_{χ,Σ_+}$ in $L_2(Ω)$ of mixed problems for a second-order strongly elliptic symmetric differential operator $A$ on a bounded smooth set $Ω\subset R^n$; here the boundary $\partialΩ=Σ$ is partioned …
