Polar weighted homogeneous polynomials are the class of special polynomials of real variables $x_i,y_i, i=1,..., n$ with $z_i=x_i+\sqrt{-1} y_i$, which enjoys a "polar action". In many aspects, their behavior looks like that of complex weighted homogeneous polynomials. We study basic properties of hypersurfaces which are defined by polar weighted homogeneous polynomials.
We prove that if $\{f_t\}$ is a family of line singularities with constant Lê numbers and such that $f_0$ is a homogeneous polynomial, then $\{f_t\}$ is equimultiple. This extends to line singularities a well known theorem of A. M. Gabrièlov and A. G. Kušnirenko concerning isolated singularities. As an application, we show that if $\{f_t\}$ is a topologically $\mathscr{V}$-equisingular family of line singularities, with $f_0$ homogeneous, then $\{f_t\}$ is equimultiple. This provides a new partial positive answer to the famous Zariski multiplicity conjecture for a special class of non-isolated…
Using the semicontinuity of the Milnor number and the Łojasiewicz exponent, we give a simple proof of Yau's characterization of isolated homogenous hypersurface singularities.
We show the existence of ($1+\frac{w_2}{w_3}$)-fast loops on semi-weighted homogeneous hypersurface singularities with weights $w_1\geq w_2>w_3$. In particular we show that semi-weighted homogeneous hypersurface singularities have metrical conical structure only if its two low weights are equal.
Let $k$ be a field and let $\text{GW}(k)$ be the Grothendieck-Witt ring of virtual non-degenerate symmetric bilinear forms over $k$. We develop methods for computing the quadratic Euler characteristic $χ(X/k)\in \text{GW}(k)$ for $X$ a smooth hypersurface in a projective space or a weighted projective space. We raise the question of a quadratic refinement of classical conductor formulas and find such a formula for the degeneration of a smooth hypersurface $X$ in $\mathbb{P}^{n+1}$ to the cone over a smooth hyperplane section of $X$; we also find a similar formula in the weighted homogeneous ca…
We prove a version of the BKK theorem for the ring of conditions of a spherical homogeneous space $G/H$. We also introduce the notion of ring of complete intersections, firstly for a spherical homogeneous space and secondly for an arbitrary variety. Similarly to the ring of conditions of the torus, the ring of complete intersections of $G/H$ admits a description in terms of volumes of polytopes.
This paper studies the singularities of jet schemes of homogeneous hypersurfaces of general type. We obtain the condition of the degree and the dimension for the singularities of the jet schemes to be of dense $F$-regular type. This provides us with examples of singular varieties whose $m$-jet schemes have rational singularities for every $m$.
This paper studies hypersurface exceptional singularities in $\mathbb C^n$ defined by non-degenerate function. For each canonical hypersurface singularity, there exists a weighted homogeneous singularity such that the former is exceptional if and only if the latter is exceptional. So we study the weighted homogeneous case and prove that the number of weights of weighted homogeneous exceptional singularities are finite. Then we determine all exceptional singularities of the Brieskorn type of dimension 3.
We consider the locus of $r$-tuples of homogeneous forms of some fixed degree whose common vanishing locus in $\mathbb{P}^r$ is positive dimensional. We show that any component of maximal dimension of that locus either consists of homogeneous forms all vanishing on some line or homogeneous forms where a proper subset fail to intersect properly.
We study the equivalence between infinitesimal Torelli theorem for smooth hypersurfaces in rational homogeneous varieties with Picard number one and the theory of generalized Massey products. This equivalence shows that the differential of the period map vanishes on an infinitesimal deformation if and only if certain twisted differential forms are elements of the Jacobian ideal of the hypersurface. We also prove an infinitesimal Torelli theorem result for smooth hypersurfaces in log parallelizable varieties.
We prove that if Y is a hypersurface of degree d in P^n with isolated singularities, then the log canonical threshold of (P^n,Y) is at least min{n/d,1}. Moreover, if d is at least n+1, then we have equality if and only if Y is the projective cone over a (smooth) hypersurface in P^{n-1}. In the case when Y is a hyperplane section of a smooth hypersurface in P^{n+1}, Cheltsov and Park have proved that Y has isolated singularities and they have obtained the above lower bound for the log canonical threshold. Moreover they made the conjecture about the equality case (for d=n+1) and they proved that…
We describe homogeneous locally nilpotent derivations of the algebra of regular functions for a class of affine trinomial hypersurfaces. This class comprises all non-factorial trinomial hypersurfaces.
Using the minors in Hessian matrices, we introduce new graded algebras associated to a homogeneous polynomial. When the associated projective hypersurface has isolated singularities, these algebras are related to some new local algebras associated to isolated hypersurface singularities, which generalize their Tjurina algebras. One consequence of our results is a new way to determine the number of weighted homogeneous singularities of such a hypersurface.
We prove that the polar degree of an arbitrarily singular projective hypersurface can be decomposed as a sum of non-negative numbers which represent local vanishing cycles of two different types. This yields lower bounds for the polar degree of any singular projective hypersurface.
We prove a formula for the polar degree of projective hypersurfaces in terms of the Milnor data of the singularities, extending to 1-dimensional singularities the Dimca-Papadima result for isolated singularities. We discuss the semi-continuity of the polar degree in deformations, and we classify the homaloidal cubic surfaces with 1-dimensional singular locus. Some open questions are pointed out along the way.
Given a hypersurface in the complex projective $n$-space we prove several known formulas for the degree of its polar map by purely algebro-geometric methods. Furthermore, we give formulas for the degree of its polar map in terms of the degrees of the polar maps of its components. As an application, we classify the plane curves with polar map of low degree, including a very simple proof of I. Dolgachev's classification of homaloidal plane curves.
For a projective hypersurface $X \subset ¶^n$, the images of the polar maps of degree $k$ are studied. The cohomology class defined by these maps is calculated and classical results on dual varieties are presented as applications.
The Jacobian ideal provides the set of infinitesimally trivial deformations for a homogeneous polynomial, or for the corresponding complex projective hypersurface. In this article, we investigate whether the associated linear deformation is indeed trivial, and show that the answer is no in a general situation. We also give a characterization of tangentially smoothable hypersurfaces with isolated singularities. Our results have applications in the local study of variations of projective hypersurfaces, complementing the global versions given by J. Carlson and P. Griffiths, R. Donagi and the auth…
Inspired by the work of Bhatt and Singh (see: arXiv:1307.1171) we compute the $F$-pure threshold of quasi-homogeneous polynomials. We first consider the case of a curve given by a quasi-homogeneous polynomial $f$ in three variables $x,y,z$ of degree equal to the degree of $xyz$ and then we proceed with the general case of a Calabi-Yau hypersurface, i.e. a hypersurface given by a quasi-homogeneous polynomial $f$ in $n+1$ variables $x_0, \ldots, x_n$ of degree equal to the degree of $x_0 \cdots x_n$.
We introduce Hodge ideal spectrum for isolated hypersurface singularities to see the difference between the Hodge ideals and the microlocal $V$-filtration modulo the Jacobian ideal. Via the Tjurina subspectrum, we can compare the Hodge ideal spectrum with the Steenbrink spectrum which can be defined by the microlocal $V$-filtration. As a consequence of a formula of Mustata and Popa, these two spectra coincide in the weighted homogeneous case. We prove sufficient conditions for their coincidence and non-coincidence in some non-weighted-homogeneous cases where the defining function is semi-weigh…
We study a simplicial mixed polynomial of cyclic type and its associated weighted homogeneous polynomial. In the present paper, we show that their links are diffeomorphic and their Milnor fibrations are isomorphic.
Let ${\mathcal Q}_n^d$ be the vector space of homogeneous forms of degree $d\ge 3$ on ${\mathbb C}^n$, with $n\ge 2$. The object of our study is the map $Φ$, introduced in earlier articles by J. Alper, M. Eastwood and the author, that assigns to every form for which the discriminant $Δ$ does not vanish the so-called associated form lying in the space ${\mathcal Q}_n^{n(d-2)*}$. This map is a morphism from the affine variety $X_n^d:=\{f\in{\mathcal Q}_n^d:Δ(f)\ne 0\}$ to the affine space ${\mathcal Q}_n^{n(d-2)*}$. Letting $p$ be the smallest integer for which the product $Δ^pΦ$ extends to a mo…
We investigate the 0-th local cohomology of the Jacobian ring of a homogeneous polynomial defining a projective hypersurface whose singular locus is a 0-dimensional complete intersection.
We consider a quasi-homogeneous polynomial $f \in \mathbb{Z}[x_0, \ldots, x_N]$ of degree $w$ equal to the degree of $x_0 \cdots x_N$ and show that the $F$-pure threshold of the reduction $f_p \in \mathbb{F}_p[x_0, \ldots, x_N]$ is equal to the log canonical threshold if and only if the height of the Artin-Mazur formal group associated to $H^{N-1}\left( X, {\mathbb{G}}_{m,X} \right)$, where $X$ is the hypersurface given by $f$, is equal to 1. We also prove that a similar result holds for Fermat hypersurfaces of degree $>N+1$. Furthermore, we give examples of weighted Delsarte surfaces which sh…
We prove that the rational cohomology of the space of non-singular complex homogeneous polynomials of degree d in a fixed number of variables stabilizes to the cohomology of the general linear group for d sufficiently large.
We prove that for an irreducible representation $τ:GL(n)\to GL(W)$, the associated homogeneous ${\bf P}_k^n$-vector bundle $W_τ$ is strongly semistable when restricted to any smooth quadric or to any smooth cubic in ${\bf P}_k^n$, where $k$ is an algebraically closed field of characteristic $\neq 2,3$ respectively. In particular $W_τ$ is semistable when restricted to general hypersurfaces of degree $\geq 2$ and is strongly semistable when restricted to the $k$-generic hypersurface of degree $\geq 2$.
We give sharp lower bounds for the degree of the syzygies involving the partial derivatives of a homogeneous polynomial defining a nodal hypersurface. The result gives information on the position of the singularities of a nodal hypersurface expressed in terms of defects or superabundances. The case of Chebyshev hypersurfaces is considered as a test for this result and leads to a potentially infinite family of nodal hypersurfaces having nontrivial Alexander polynomials.
Let $F$ be a homogeneous polynomial in $S = \mathbb{C}[x_0,...,x_n]$. Our goal is to understand a particular polynomial decomposition of $F$; geometrically, we wish to determine when the hypersurface defined by $F$ in $\mathbb{P}^n$ contains a star configuration. To solve this problem, we use techniques from commutative algebra and algebraic geometry to reduce our question to computing the rank of a matrix.
We prove analogues of several well-known results concerning rational morphisms between quadrics for the class of so-called quasilinear $p$-hypersurfaces. These hypersurfaces are nowhere smooth over the base field, so many of the geometric methods which have been successfully applied to the study of projective homogeneous varieties over fields cannot be used. We are therefore forced to take an alternative approach, which is partly facilitated by the appearance of several non-traditional features in the study of these objects from an algebraic perspective. Our main results were previously known …
The objective of this paper is to show how the recently proposed method by Giusti, Heintz, Morais, Morgenstern, Pardo \cite{gihemorpar} can be applied to a case of real polynomial equation solving. Our main result concerns the problem of finding one representative point for each connected component of a real bounded smooth hypersurface. The algorithm in \cite{gihemorpar} yields a method for symbolically solving a zero-dimensional polynomial equation system in the affine (and toric) case. Its main feature is the use of adapted data structure: Arithmetical networks and straight-line programs. Th…
We give an explicit procedure which computes for degree $d \leq 3$ the correlation functions of topological sigma model (A-model) on a projective Fano hypersurface $X$ as homogeneous polynomials of degree $d$ in the correlation functions of degree 1 (number of lines). We extend this formalism to the case of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces and explain how the polynomial property is preserved. Our key tool is the construction of universal recursive formulas which express the structural constants of the quantum cohomology ring of $X$ as weighted homogeneous polynomial functions in the constants of the F…
In this paper we apply for the first time a new method for multivariate equation solving which was developed in \cite{gh1}, \cite{gh2}, \cite{gh3} for complex root determination to the {\em real} case. Our main result concerns the problem of finding at least one representative point for each connected component of a real compact and smooth hypersurface. The basic algorithm of \cite{gh1}, \cite{gh2}, \cite{gh3} yields a new method for symbolically solving zero-dimensional polynomial equation systems over the complex numbers. One feature of central importance of this algorithm is the use of a pr…
We compute the essential dimension of the functors Forms_{n,d} and Hypersurf_{n, d} of equivalence classes of homogeneous polynomials in n variables and hypersurfaces in P^{n-1}, respectively, over any base field k of characteristic 0. Here two polynomials (or hypersurfaces) over K are considered equivalent if they are related by a linear change of coordinates with coefficients in K. Our proof is based on a new Genericity Theorem for algebraic stacks, which is of independent interest. As another application of the Genericity Theorem, we prove a new result on the essential dimension of the stac…
Hypersurface simple K3 singularities defined by nondegenerate quasi-homogeneous polynomials are classified into ninety five classes in term of the weight of the polynomial by T. Yonemura. We consider versal deformations of them. It has been conjectured that the stratum $μ$ =const of the versal deformation of any nondegenerate hypersurface simple K3 singularity is equivalent to the $δ_m$ constant locus. It holds true for the case deformations are also nondegenerate by K. Watanabe. On the other hand, it follows from Reid that the $δ_m$ constant locus includes the $μ$ constant locus generally. We…
Consider a linear realization of a matroid over a field. One associates with it a configuration polynomial and a symmetric bilinear form with linear homogeneous coefficients. The corresponding configuration hypersurface and its non-smooth locus support the respective first and second degeneracy scheme of the bilinear form. We show that these schemes are reduced and describe the effect of matroid connectivity: for (2-)connected matroids, the configuration hypersurface is integral, and the second degeneracy scheme is reduced Cohen-Macaulay of codimension 3. If the matroid is 3-connected, then al…
