Let U be a smooth quasiprojective complex variety and CH^r(U,1) a special instance of Bloch's higher Chow groups. Jannsen was the first to show that the cycle class map cl_{r,1} from CH^r(U,1) (tensored with Q) to hom_{MHS}(Q(0), H^{2r-1}(U,Q(r)) is not in general surjective, contradicting an earlier conjecture of Beilinson. In this paper, we give a refinement of Jannsen's counterexample, and further show that the aforementioned cycle class map becomes surjective at the generic point.
We show that the description of Deligne--Beilinson cohomology is improved by using log Hodge theory. We consider the log relative version of it, and also present a fundamental conjecture in log Hodge theory.
We study an analogue of the Noether-Lefschetz theorem in the context of Beilinson's Hodge conjecture. We estimate the dimension of the Noether-Lefschetz locus by the infinitesimal methods in Hodge theory.
The Beilinson-Hodge conjecture asserts the surjectivity of the cycle map $$H^n_M(X,\Q(n)) \to {\rm Hom}_{MHS}(\Q(-n),H^n(X,\Q))$$ for all positive integers $n$ and every smooth complex algebraic variety $X$. For $n=2$, we prove the conjecture if $X$ is rational.
The main subject of study in this paper is the Noether-Lefschetz locus for Beilinson-Hodge cycles on the complement of the union of hyperplane sections in a surface in $\Bbb P^3$. We give an analogue of the result by M.Green and C.Voisin on the maximal components in the Noether-Lefschetz locus.
It is known that the Picard group of a complex manifold can be expressed as a Deligne cohomology group. One may wonder if the same holds for the Picard group of a smooth algebraic variety and Deligne-Beilinson cohomology but this is not true, as already remarked by M. Saito. We explain how one has to modify the latter, show that the Picard group can be expressed by absolute Hodge cohomology, too, and introduce an intermediate object between Picard group and usual Deligne-Beilinson cohomology group. Similarly as in the case of Deligne cohomology one can relate line bundles with a regular connec…
Consider the cycle class map cl_{r,m} : CH^r(U,m;\Q) \to ΓH^{2r-m}(U,\Q(r)), where CH^r(U,m;\Q) is Bloch's higher Chow group (tensored with \Q) of a smooth complex quasi-projective variety U, and H^{2r-m}(U,\Q(r)) is singular cohomology. We study the image of cl_{r,m} in terms of kernels of Abel-Jacobi maps. When r=m, we deduce from the Bloch-Kato theorem that the cokernel of cl_{r,m} at the generic point of U is the same for integral or rational coefficients.
Along the lines of Hodge and Tate conjectures, Beilinson conjectured that in the qth cohomology all the weight 2q Hodge cycles of a smooth complex variety and all the weight 2q Tate cycles of a smooth variety over a finitely generated field comes from the higher Chow groups. For product of curves and semiabelian varieties, Beilinson-Hodge conjecture was shown in a previous paper by the authors. Here both Beilinson-Hodge and Beilinson-Tate conjectures are shown to be true for varieties dominated by product of curves. We also show that lower weight Hodge cycles (resp. Tate cycles) are algebraic …
Beilinson conjectured that all rational cycles of type (q,q) on the qth cohomology of a smooth complex algebraic variety should come from motivic cohomology. The purpose of this note is to prove this when the variety is a semiabelian variety or a product of curves. The proof is based on the study of invariants under the Mumford-Tate group.
The goal of this paper is to develop the theory of Deligne-Beilinson cohomology of affine groups with a mixed Hodge structure. The motivation comes from Hodge theory and the study of motives, where such groups appear. Several of Francis Brown's period computations (arXiv:1407.5167) are interpreted as elements of the DB cohomology of the relative unipotent completion of $SL_2(Z)$ and their cup products. The results in this paper are used in arXiv:1403.6443 where they are used to prove that Pollack's quadratic relations are motivic.
Let k be an algebraically closed subfield of the complex numbers, and X a variety defined over k. One version of the Beilinson-Hodge conjecture that seems to survive scrutiny is the statement that the Betti cycle class map cl_{r,m} : H_M^{2r-m}(k(X),Q(r)) -> hom_{MHS}(Q(0),H^{2r-m}(k(X)(C),Q(r))) is surjective, that being equivalent to the Hodge conjecture in the case m=0. Now consider a smooth and proper map ρ: X -> S of smooth quasi-projective varieties over k. We formulate a version of this conjecture for the generic fibre, expecting the corresponding cycle class map to be surjective. We pr…
We interpret syntomic cohomology of Nekovář-Nizioł as a $p$-adic absolute Hodge cohomology. This is analogous to the interpretation of Deligne-Beilinson cohomology as an absolute Hodge cohomology by Beilinson and generalizes the results of Bannai and Chiarellotto, Ciccioni, Mazzari in the good reduction case, and of Yamada in the semistable reduction case. This interpretation yields a simple construction of the syntomic descent spectral sequence and its degeneration for proper and smooth varieties. We introduce syntomic coefficients and show that in dimension zero they form a full triangulated…
We consider the problem of explicitly computing Beilinson--Bloch heights of homologically trivial cycles on varieties defined over number fields. Recent results have established a congruence, up to the rational span of logarithms of primes, between the height of certain limit mixed Hodge structures and certain Beilinson--Bloch heights obtained from odd-dimensional hypersurfaces with a node. This congruence suggests a new method to compute Beilinson--Bloch heights. Here we explain how to compute the relevant limit mixed Hodge structures in practice, then apply our computational method to a noda…
We prove that the Beilinson regulator, which is a map from $K$-theory to absolute Hodge cohomology of a smooth variety, admits a refinement to a map of $E_\infty$-ring spectra in the sense of algebraic topology. To this end we exhibit absolute Hodge cohomology as the cohomology of a commutative differential graded algebra over $\mathbb{R}$. The associated spectrum to this CDGA is the target of the refinement of the regulator and the usual $K$-theory spectrum is the source. To prove this result we compute the space of maps from the motivic $K$-theory spectrum to the motivic spectrum that repres…
In this paper, we show some applications to algebraic cycles by using higher Abel-Jacobi maps which were defined in [the author: Motives and algebraic de Rham cohomology]. In particular, we prove that the Beilinson conjecture on algebraic cycles over number fields implies the Bloch conjecture on zero-cycles on surfaces. Moreover, we construct a zero-cycle on a product of curves whose Mumford invariant vanishes, but not higher Abel-Jacobi invariant.
Let X be a smooth quasi-projective variety over the algebraic closure of the rational number field. We show that the cycle map of the higher Chow group to Deligne cohomology is injective and the higher Hodge cycles are generated by the image of the cycle map as conjectured by Beilinson and Jannsen, if the cycle map to Deligne cohomology is injective and the Hodge conjecture is true for certain smooth projective varieties over the algebraic closure of the rational number field. We also verify the conjecture on the surjectivity in the case of the complement of a union of general hypersurfaces in…
If $X$ is a smooth projective variety over ${\mathbb R}$, the Hodge ${\mathcal D}$-conjecture of Beilinson asserts the surjectivity of the regulator map to Deligne cohomology with real coefficients. It is known to be false in general but is true in some special cases like Abelian surfaces and $K3$-surfaces - and still expected to be true when the variety is defined over a number field. We prove an analogue of this for Abelian surfaces at a non-Archimedean place where the surface has bad reduction. Here the Deligne cohomology is replaced by a certain Chow group of the special fibre. The case of…
In a previous paper we proved that after a simple transformation the generating series of the linear Hodge integrals on the moduli space of stable curves satisfies the hierarchy of the Intermediate Long Wave equation. In this paper we present a much shorter proof of this fact. Our new proof is based on an explicit formula for the one-point linear Hodge integrals that was found independently by Faber, Pandharipande and Ekedahl, Lando, Shapiro, Vainshtein.
We prove that on a certain class of smooth complex varieties (those with "affine even stratifications"), the category of mixed Hodge modules is "almost" Koszul: it becomes Koszul after a few unwanted extensions are eliminated. We also give an equivalence between perverse sheaves on such a variety and modules for a certain graded ring, obtaining a formality result as a corollary. For flag varieties, these results were proved earlier by Beilinson-Ginzburg-Soergel using a rather different construction.
For a smooth complex projective variety X defined over a number field, we have filtrations on the Chow groups depending of the choice of realizations. If the realization consists of mixed Hodge structure without any additional structure, we can show that the obtained filtration coincides with the filtration of Green and Griffiths, assuming the Hodge conjecture. In the case the realizations contain Hodge structure and etale cohomology, we prove that if the second graded piece of the filtration does not vanish, it contains a nonzero element which is represented by a cycle defined over a field of…
In this note, we show how the classical Hodge index theorem implies the Hodge index conjecture of Beilinson for height pairing of homologically trivial codimension two cycles over function field of characteristic 0. Such an index conjecture has been used in our paper on Gross-Schoen cycles to deduce the Bogomolov conjecture and a lower bound for Hodge class (or Faltings height) from some conjectures about metrized graphs which have just been recently proved by Zubeyir Cinkir.
We show that the direct image of the filtered logarithmic de Rham complex is a direct sum of filtered logarithmic complexes with coefficients in variations of Hodge structures, using a generalization of the decomposition theorem of Beilinson, Bernstein and Deligne to the case of filtered $D$-modules. The advantage of using the logarithmic complexes is that we have the strictness of the Hodge filtration by Deligne after taking the cohomology group in the projective case. As a corollary, we get the total infinitesimal invariant of a (higher) cycle in a direct sum of the cohomology of filtered lo…
Suppose that Y is a cyclic cover of projective space branched over a hyperplane arrangement D, and that U is the complement of the ramification locus in Y. The first theorem implies that the Beilinson-Hodge conjecture holds for U if certain multiplicities of D are coprime to the degree of the cover. For instance this applies when D is reduced with normal crossings. The second theorem shows that when D has normal crossings and the degree of the cover is a prime number, the generalized Hodge conjecture holds for any toroidal resolution of Y. The last section contains some partial extensions to m…
Derived de Rham cohomology has been recently used in several contexts, as in works of Beilinson and Bhatt on p-adic periods morphisms and Morin on numerical invariants for special values of zeta functions. Inspired by some results of Morin, we aimed to compute Hodge completed derived de Rham complex in the case of a rings map $\mathbb{Z}\longrightarrow k$, factoring through $\mathbb{F}_p$, with $k$ a perfect ring (i.e. the Frobenius map is an automorphism).
We define an analogue of the `Real' Deligne cohomology group at a prime of semi-stable or good reduction of a variety. We also define regulator maps to this group and formulate a conjecture about the image. This allows us to formulate a non-Archimedian version of Beilinson's Hodge-D-conjecture, S-integral and function field versions of Beilinson's global conjectures as well as a precise special value conjecture in the function field case. Finally we give a few examples where these conjectures are known to be true.
We express the kernel of Griffiths' Abel-Jacobi map by using the inductive limit of Deligne cohomology in the generalized sense (i.e. the absolute Hodge cohomology of A. Beilinson). This generalizes a result of L. Barbieri-Viale and V. Srinivas in the surface case. We then show that the Abel-Jacobi map for codimension 2 cycles and the Albanese map are bijective if a general hyperplane section is a surface for which Bloch's conjecture is proved. In certain cases we verify Nori's conjecture on the Griffiths group. We also prove a weak Lefschetz-type theorem for (higher) Chow groups, generalize a…
In this paper we show that the map % $$\partial:CH^2(E_1 \times E_2,1)\otimes \Q \longrightarrow PCH^1(\XX_v)$$ % is surjective, where $E_1$ and $E_2$ are two non-isogenous semistable elliptic curves over a local field, $CH^2(E_1 \times E_2,1)$ is one of Bloch's higher Chow groups and $PCH^1(\XX_v)$ is a certain subquotient of a Chow group of the special fibre $\XX_{v}$ of a semi-stable model $\XX$ of $E_1 \times E_2$. On one hand, this can be viewed as a non-Archimedean analogue of the Hodge-$\D$-conjecture of Beilinson - which is known to be true in this case by the work of Chen and Lewis \c…
Starting from the candidate Bloch-Beilinson filtration on Chow groups of 0-cycles constructed by J. Lewis, we develop and describe geometrically a series of Hodge-theoretic invariants defined on the graded pieces. Explicit formulas (in terms of currents and membrane integrals) are given for certain quotients of the invariants, with applications to 0-cycles on products of curves.
Let $X$ be a projective algebraic manifold and let $CH^r(X)$ be the Chow group of algebraic cycles of codimension $r$ on $X$, modulo rational equivalence. Working with a candidate Bloch-Beilinson filtration $\{F^ν\}_{ν\geq 0}$ on $CH^r(X)\otimes {\Bbb Q}$ due to the second author, we construct a space of arithmetic Hodge theoretic invariants $\nabla J^{r,ν}(X)$ and corresponding map $ϕ_{X}^{r,ν} : Gr_{F}^νCH^r(X)\otimes {\Bbb Q} \to \nabla J^{r,ν}(X)$, and determine conditions on $X$ for which the kernel and image of $ϕ_{X}^{r,ν}$ are ``uncountably large''.
In this paper we construct extensions of mixed Hodge structures coming from the mixed Hodge structure on the graded quotients of the group ring of the fundamental group of a smooth, projective, pointed curve. These extensions correspond to the regulators of certain motivic cycles in the Jacobian of the curve which were constructed by Beilinson and Bloch. This leads to a new iterated integral expression for the regulator. This is a generalisation of a theorem of Colombo where she constructed the extension corresponding to Collino's cycles in the Jacobian of a hyperelliptic curve.
Let X be an irreducible complex variety, S a stratification of X and F a holomorphic vector bundle on the open statum. We give geometric conditions on S and F that produce a natural extension of the k-th Chern class F as a class in the complex cohomology of X of Hodge level at least k. When X is the Baily-Borel compactification of a locally symmetric variety with its stratification by boundary components, and F an automorphic bundle on its interior, then this recovers and refines a theorem of Goresky-Pardon. In passing we define a class of simplicial resolutions of the Baily-Borel compactifica…
A strong version of the quantization conjecture of Guillemin and Sternberg is proved. For a reductive group action on a smooth, compact, polarized variety (X,L), the cohomologies of L over the GIT quotient X // G equal the invariant part of the cohomologies over X. This generalizes the theorem of [Invent. Math. 67 (1982), 515-538] on global sections, and strengthens its subsequent extensions to Riemann-Roch numbers. Remarkable by-products are the invariance of cohomology of vector bundles over X // G under a small change in the defining polarization or under shift desingularization, as well as…
We consider the variation of tropical Hodge structure (TVHS) associated to families of tropical varieties. The family of the tropical intermediate Jacobians of the associated tropical Hodge structure defines a bundle of tropical Jacobians, whose sections we call the tropical normal functions. We define formal sequential derivatives of these functions on the base with respect to the natural Gauss-Manin connection as the Hodge theoretic invariants detecting tropical cycles in the fibers. The associated invariants which are defined inductively are the higher Abel-Jacobi invariants in the tropical…
