Given a real valued and time-inhomogeneous martingale diffusion X, we investigate the properties of functions defined by the conditional expectation f(t,X_t)=E[g(X_T)|F_t]. We show that whenever g is monotonic or Lipschitz continuous then f(t,x) will also be monotonic or Lipschitz continuous in x. If g is convex then f(t,x) will be convex in x and decreasing in t. We also define the marginal support of a process and show that it almost surely contains the paths of the process. Although f need not be jointly continuous, we show that it will be continuous on the marginal support of X. We prove these results for a generalization of diffusion processes that we call `almost-continuous diffusions', and includes all continuous and strong Markov processes.
We provides some useful estimates for solving martingale representation problem under G-expectations. We also study the corresponding conditions for the existence and uniqueness.
We give a theory of sublinear expectations and martingales in discrete time. Without assuming the existence of a dominating probability measure, we derive the extensions of classical results on uniform integrability, optional stopping of martingales, and martingale convergence. We also give a theory of BSDEs in the context of sublinear expectations and a finite-state space, including general existence and comparison results.
This paper is concerned with the connection between G-Brownian Motion and analytic functions. We introduce the complex version of sublinear expectation, and then do the stochastic analysis in this framework. Furthermore, the conformal G-Brownian Motion is introduced together with a representation, and the corresponding conformal invariance is shown.
This paper considers the nonlinear theory of G-martingales as introduced by Peng. A martingale representation theorem for this theory is proved by using the techniques and the results established in an accompanying paper for the second order stochastic target problems and the second order backward stochastic differential equations. In particular, this representation provides a hedging strategy in a market with an uncertain volatility.
We investigate a possible definition of expectation and conditional expectation for random variables with values in a local field such as the $p$-adic numbers. We define the expectation by analogy with the observation that for real-valued random variables in $L^2$ the expected value is the orthogonal projection onto the constants. Previous work has shown that the local field version of $L^\infty$ is the appropriate counterpart of $L^2$, and so the expected value of a local field-valued random variable is defined to be its ``projection'' in $L^\infty$ onto the constants. Unlike the real case, t…
The central limit theorem of martingales is the fundamental tool for studying the convergence of stochastic processes, especially stochastic integrals and differential equations. In this paper, general central limit theorems and functional central limit theorems are obtained for martingale like random variables under the sub-linear expectation. As applications, the Lindeberg central limit theorem and functional central limit theorem are obtained for independent but not necessarily identically distributed random variables, and a new proof of the Lévy characterization of a G-Brownian motion with…
We formulate and solve the martingale problem in a nonlinear expectation space. Unlike the classical work of Stroock and Varadhan (1969) where the linear operator in the associated PDE is naturally defined from the corresponding diffusion process, the main difficulty in the nonlinear setting is to identify an appropriate class of nonlinear operators for the associated fully nonlinear PDEs. Based on the analysis of the martingale problem, we introduce the notion of weak solution for stochastic differential equations under nonlinear expectations and obtain an existence theorem under the Hölder c…
We consider a diffusion processes $\{ X_t \}$ on an interval in the natural scale. Some results are known under which $\{ X_t \}$ is a martingale, and we give simple and analytic proofs for them.
We derive diffusion constants and martingales for senile random walks with the help of a time-change. We provide direct computations of the diffusion constants for the time-changed walks. Alternatively, the values of these constants can be derived from martingales associated with the time-changed walks. Using an inverse time-change, the diffusion constants for senile random walks are then obtained via these martingales. When the walks are diffusive, weak convergence to Brownian motion can be shown using a martingale functional limit theorem.
In this article, a sublinear expectation induced by $G$-expectation is introduced, which is called $G$-evaluation for convenience. As an application, we prove that any $ξ\in L^β_G(Ω_T)$ with some $β>1$ the decomposition theorem holds and any $β>1$ integrable symmetric $G$-martingale can be represented as an It$\hat{o}'s$ integral w.r.t $G$-Brownian motion. As a byproduct, we prove a regular property for $G$-martingale: Any $G$-martingale $\{M_t\}$ has a quasi-continuous version
In this paper we explain that the natural filtration of a continuous Hunt process is continuous, and show that martingales over such a filtration are continuous. We further establish a martingale representation theorem for a class of continuous Hunt processes under certain technical conditions. In particular we establish the martingale representation theorem for the martingale parts of (reflecting) symmetric diffusions in a bounded domain with a continuous boundary. Together with an approach put forward in Lyons et al(2009), our martingale representation theorem is then applied to the study of…
We prove uniqueness of a martingale problem with boundary conditions on a simplex associated to a differential operator with an unbounded drift. We show that the solution of the martingale problem remains absorbed at the boundary once it attains it, and that, after hitting the boundary, it performs a diffusion on a lower dimensional simplex, similar to the original one. We also prove that in the diffusive time scale condensing zero-range processes evolve as this absorbed diffusion.
We show that a one-dimensional regular continuous Markov process \(\X\) with scale function \(s\) is a Feller--Dynkin process precisely if the space transformed process \(s (X)\) is a martingale when stopped at the boundaries of its state space. As a consequence, the Feller--Dynkin and the martingale property are equivalent for regular diffusions on natural scale with open state space. By means of a counterexample, we also show that this equivalence fails for multi-dimensional diffusions. Moreover, for Itô diffusions we discuss relations to Cauchy problems.
We study jump-diffusion processes with parameters switching at random times. Being motivated by possible applications, we characterise equivalent martingale measures for these processes by means of the relative entropy. The minimal entropy approach is also developed. It is shown that in contrast to the case of Lévy processes, for this model an Esscher transformation does not produce the minimal relative entropy.
We formulate a martingale problem that describes a diffusion process in a multidimensional Euclidean space with a membrane located on a given smooth surface and having the properties of skewing and delaying. The theorem on the existence of no more than one solution to the problem is proved.
The central limit theorem of martingales is the fundamental tool for studying the convergence of stochastic processes. The central limit theorem and functional central limit theorem are obtained for martingale like random variables under the sub-linear expectation by Zhang (2019). In this paper, we consider the multi-dimensional martingale like random vectors and establish a functional central limit theorem. As applications, the Lindeberg central limit theorem for independent random vectors is established, and the sufficient and necessary conditions of the central limit theorem for independent…
The $L^p$ maximal inequalities for martingales are one of the classical results in the theory of stochastic processes. Here we establish the sharp moderate maximal inequalities for one-dimensional diffusion processes, which include the $L^p$ maximal inequalities as special cases. Moreover, we apply our theory to many specific examples, including the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck (OU) process, Brownian motion with drift, reflected Brownian motion with drift, Cox-Ingersoll-Ross process, radial OU process, and Bessel process. The results are further applied to establish the moderate maximal inequalities for…
In this paper, we establish Girsanov's formula for $G$-Brownian motion. Peng (2007, 2008) constructed $G$-Brownian motion on the space of continuous paths under a sublinear expectation called $G$-expectation; as obtained by Denis et al. (2011), $G$-expectation is represented as the supremum of linear expectations with respect to martingale measures of a certain class. Our argument is based on this representation with an enlargement of the associated class of martingale measures, and on Girsanov's formula for martingales in the classical stochastic analysis. The methodology differs from that of…
The existence of global nonnegative martingale solutions to a stochastic cross-diffusion system for an arbitrary but finite number of interacting population species is shown. The random influence of the environment is modeled by a multiplicative noise term. The diffusion matrix is generally neither symmetric nor positive definite, but it possesses a quadratic entropy structure. This structure allows us to work in a Hilbert space framework and to apply a stochastic Galerkin method. The existence proof is based on energy-type estimates, the tightness criterion of Brzeźniak and co-workers, and Ja…
In this paper we give the decomposition of a martingale under the sublinear expectation associated with a $G$-L'evy process X with finite activity and without drift. We prove that such a martingale consists of an Ito integral w.r.t. continuous part of a $G$-L'evy process, compensated Ito-L'evy integral w.r.t. jump measure associated with $X$ and a non-increasing continuous $G$-martingale starting at 0.
We give necessary and sufficient criteria for the Feller-Dynkin property of solutions to martingale problems in terms of Lyapunov functions. Moreover, we derive a Khasminskii-type integral test for the Feller-Dynkin property of multidimensional diffusions with random switching. For one dimensional switching diffusions with state-independent switching, we provide an integral-test for the Feller-Dynkin property.
In this paper, we establish several local and global gradient estimates for the positive solution of Porous Medium Equations (PMEs) and Fast Diffusion Equations (FDEs). Our proof is probabilistic and uses martingale techniques.
In this paper we derive martingale estimating functions for the dimensionality parameter of a Bessel process based on the eigenfunctions of the diffusion operator. Since a Bessel process is non-ergodic and the theory of martingale estimating functions is developed for ergodic diffusions, we use the space-time transformation of the Bessel process and formulate our results for a modified Bessel process. We deduce consistency, asymptotic normality and discuss optimality. It turns out that the martingale estimating function based of the first eigenfunction of the modified Bessel process coincides …
A geometric reformulation of the martingale problem associated with a set of diffusion processes is proposed. This formulation, based on second order geometry and Ito integration on manifolds, allows us to give a natural and effective definition of Lie symmetries for diffusion processes.
The paper studies a non-linear transformation between Brownian martingales, which is given by the inverse of the pricing operator in the mathematical finance terminology. Subsequently, the solvability of systems of equations corresponding to such transformations is investigated. The latter give rise to novel monotone pathwise couplings of an arbitrary number of certain diffusion processes with varying diffusion coefficients. In the case that there is an uncountable number of these diffusion processes and that the index set is an interval such couplings can be viewed as models for the growth of…
We study upper estimates of the martingale dimension $d_m$ of diffusion processes associated with strong local Dirichlet forms. By applying a general strategy to self-similar Dirichlet forms on self-similar fractals, we prove that $d_m=1$ for natural diffusions on post-critically finite self-similar sets and that $d_m$ is dominated by the spectral dimension for the Brownian motion on Sierpinski carpets.
Let $E$ be a complete, separable metric space and $A$ be an operator on $C_b(E)$. We give an abstract definition of viscosity sub/supersolution of the resolvent equation $λu-Au=h$ and show that, if the comparison principle holds, then the martingale problem for $A$ has a unique solution. Our proofs work also under two alternative definitions of viscosity sub/supersolution which might be useful, in particular, in infinite dimensional spaces, for instance to study measure-valued processes. We prove the analogous result for stochastic processes that must satisfy boundary conditions, modeled as so…
Using the foundations laid down in Hardy and Harris (2006) ["A new formulation of the spine approach in branching diffusions", arXiv:math.PR/0611054], we present new spine proofs of the L^p-convergence p>=1) of some key `additive' martingales for three distinct models of branching diffusions, including new results for a multi-type branching Brownian motion and discussion of left-most particle speeds. The spine techniques we develop give clear and simple arguments in the spirit of the conceptual spine proofs found in Kyprianou (2004) ["Travelling wave solutions to the KPP equation, Ann. Inst. H…
In this paper, we study representative investor's G-utility maximization problem by G-martingale approach in the framework of G-expectation space proposed by Peng \cite{Pe19}. Financial market has only a bond and a stock with uncertainty characterized by G-Brownian motions. The routine idea of \cite{Wxz} fails because that the quadratic variation process of a G-Brownian motion is also a stochastic process. To overcome this difficulty, an extended nonlinear expectation should be pulled in. A sufficient condition of G-utility maximization is presented firstly. In the case of log-utility, an expl…
Our purpose is to investigate properties for processes with stationary and independent increments under $G$-expectation. As applications, we prove the martingale characterization to $G$-Brownian motion and present a decomposition for generalized $G$-Brownian motion.
In this article, it is proved that for any cumulative distribution function with compact support and a specified t > 0, there exists a diffusion martingale which has this law at time t. The article proves existence; no claims are made about uniqueness. After a discussion on strings and associated semigroups, the article gives a re-working of a standard approach to the problem of constructing an explicit discrete time martingale diffusion on a finite state space which, for a random geometrically distributed time that is independent of the diffusion, the law of the diffusion stopped at this rand…
We establish existence of exponential moments and the validity of the affine transform formula for affine jump-diffusions with a general closed convex state space. This extends known results for affine jump-diffusions with a canonical state space. The key step is to prove the martingale property of an exponential local martingale, using the well-posedness of the associated martingale problem. By analytic extension we obtain the affine transform formula for complex exponentials, in particular for the characteristic function. Our results apply to a wide class of affine processes, including those…
Lions and Musiela (2007) give sufficient conditions to verify when a stochastic exponential of a continuous local martingale is a martingale or a uniformly integrable martingale. Blei and Engelbert (2009) and Mijatović and Urusov (2012c) give necessary and sufficient conditions in the case of perfect correlation (ρ=1). For financial applications, such as checking the martingale property of the stock price process in correlated stochastic volatility models, we extend their work to the arbitrary correlation case (-1<=ρ<=1). We give a complete classification of the convergence properties of integ…
We prove that the martingale dimensions for canonical diffusion processes on a class of self-similar sets including nested fractals are always one. This provides an affirmative answer to the conjecture of S. Kusuoka [Publ. Res. Inst. Math. Sci. 25 (1989) 659--680].
We provide verification theorems (at different levels of generality) for infinite horizon stochastic control problems in continuous time for semimartingales. The control framework is given as an abstract "martingale formulation", which encompasses a broad range of standard control problems. Under appropriate conditions we show that the set of admissible controls gives rise to a certain class of controlled special semimartingales. Our results generalise both the standard controlled Itô- and Lévy-diffusion settings as we allow ourselves to locally control not only the drift and diffusion coeffic…
We study the martingale problem associated with the operator $L u = \partial_s u + 1/2 \sum_{i,j=1}^{d_0} a^{ij} \partial_{ij} u + \sum_{i,j=1}^d B^{ij} x^j \partial_i u$, where $d_0 \leq d$. We show that the martingale problem is well-posed when the function $a$ is continuous and strictly positive-definite on $\bb R^{d_0}$ and the matrix $B$ takes a particular lower-diagonal, block form. We then localize this result to show that the martingale problem remains well-posed when $B$ is replaced by a sufficiently smooth vector field whose Jacobian matrix satisfies a nondegeneracy condition.
The existence of a global martingale solution to a cross-diffusion system with multiplicative Wiener noise in a bounded domain with no-flux boundary conditions is shown. The model describes the dynamics of population densities of different species due to segregation cross-diffusion effects. The diffusion matrix is generally neither symmetric nor positive semidefinite. This difficulty is overcome by exploiting the Rao entropy structure. The existence proof uses a stochastic Galerkin method, uniform estimates from the Rao entropy inequality, and the Skorokhod--Jakubowski theorem. Furthermore, an…
In this paper, we continue to explore the consistence and usability of Probability Bracket Notation (PBN) proposed in our previous articles. After a brief review of PBN with dimensional analysis, we investigate probability spaces in terms of PBN by introducing probability spaces associated with random variables (R.V) or associated with stochastic processes (S.P). Next, we express several important properties of conditional expectation (CE) and some their proofs in PBN. Then, we introduce martingales based on sequence of R.V or based on filtration in PBN. In the process, we see PBN can be used …
This paper considers the martingale problem for a class of weakly coupled Lévy type operators. It is shown that under some mild conditions, the martingale problem is well-posed and uniquely determines a strong Markov process $(X,Λ)$. The process $(X,Λ)$, called a regime-switching jump diffusion with Lévy type jumps, is further shown to posses Feller and strong Feller properties under non-Lipschitz conditions via the coupling method.
We study strict local martingales via h-transforms, a method which first appeared in Delbaen-Schachermayer. We show that strict local martingales arise whenever there is a consistent family of change of measures where the two measures are not equivalent to one another. Several old and new strict local martingales are identified. We treat examples of diffusions with various boundary behavior, size-bias sampling of diffusion paths, and non-colliding diffusions. A multidimensional generalization to conformal strict local martingales is achieved through Kelvin transform. As curious examples of non…
In this paper, we study the classical Keller - Segel system on a two-dimensional domain perturbed by a pair of Wiener processes, where the leading diffusion term is replaced by a porous media term. Since the randomness is intrinsic, the interpretation of the stochastic integral in the Stratonovich sense is natural. We construct a solution (integral) operator and establish its continuity and compactness properties in an appropriately chosen Banach space. In this manner, we formulate a stochastic version of the Schauder - Tychonoff Type Fixed Point Theorem which is specific to our problem to obt…
In [8], asymptotic expansion of the martingale with mixed normal limit was provided. The expansion formula is expressed by the adjoint of a random symbol with coefficients described by the Malliavin calculus, differently from the standard invariance principle. As an application, an asymptotic expansion for a quadratic form of a diffusion process was derived in the same paper. This article gives some details of the derivation, after a short review of the martingale expansion in mixed normal limit.
We consider filtration consistent nonlinear expectations in probability spaces satisfying only the usual conditions and separability. Under a domination assumption, we demonstrate that these nonlinear expectations can be expressed as the solutions to Backward Stochastic Differential Equations with Lipschitz continuous drivers, where both the martingale and the driver terms are permitted to jump, and the martingale representation is infinite dimensional. To establish this result, we show that this domination condition is sufficient to guarantee that the comparison theorem for BSDEs will hold, a…
We study existence of probability measure valued jump-diffusions described by martingale problems. We develop a simple device that allows us to embed Wasserstein spaces and other similar spaces of probability measures into locally compact spaces where classical existence theory for martingale problems can be applied. The method allows for general dynamics including drift, diffusion, and possibly infinite-activity jumps. We also develop tools for verifying the required conditions on the generator, including the positive maximum principle and certain continuity and growth conditions. To illustra…
In this work, we show that for the martingale problem for a class of degenerate diffusions with bounded continuous drift and diffusion coefficients, the small noise limit of non-degenerate approximations leads to a unique Feller limit. The proof uses the theory of viscosity solutions applied to the associated backward Kolmogorov equations. Under appropriate conditions on drift and diffusion coefficients, we will establish a comparison principle and a one-one correspondence between Feller solutions to the martingale problem and continuous viscosity solutions of the associated Kolmogorov equatio…
We consider a semimartingale market model when the underlying diffusion has a singular volatility matrix and compute the hedging portfolio for a given payoff function. Recently, the representation problem for such degenerate diffusions with respect to a minimal martingale has been completely settled. This martingale representation and Malliavin calculus established further for the functionals of a degenerate diffusion process constitute the basis of the present work. Using the Clark-Hausmann-Bismut-Ocone type representation formula derived for these functionals, we prove a version of this form…
The existence of global nonnegative martingale solutions to a cross-diffusion system of Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto type with multiplicative noise is proven. The model describes the segregation dynamics of populations with an arbitrary number of species. The diffusion matrix is generally neither symmetric nor positive semidefinite, which excludes standard methods. Instead, the existence proof is based on the entropy structure of the model, approximated by a Wong-Zakai argument, and on suitable higher moment estimates and fractional time regularity. In the case without self-diffusion, the lack …
