We investigate a possible definition of expectation and conditional expectation for random variables with values in a local field such as the $p$-adic numbers. We define the expectation by analogy with the observation that for real-valued random variables in $L^2$ the expected value is the orthogonal projection onto the constants. Previous work has shown that the local field version of $L^\infty$ is the appropriate counterpart of $L^2$, and so the expected value of a local field-valued random variable is defined to be its ``projection'' in $L^\infty$ onto the constants. Unlike the real case, the resulting projection is not typically a single constant, but rather a ball in the metric on the local field. However, many properties of this expectation operation and the corresponding conditional expectation mirror those familiar from the real-valued case; for example, conditional expectation is, in a suitable sense, a contraction on $L^\infty$ and the tower property holds. We also define the corresponding notion of martingale, show that several standard examples of martingales (for example, sums or products of suitable independent random variables or ``harmonic'' functions composed with Markov chains) have local field analogues, and obtain versions of the optional sampling and martingale convergence theorems.
We provides some useful estimates for solving martingale representation problem under G-expectations. We also study the corresponding conditions for the existence and uniqueness.
We give a theory of sublinear expectations and martingales in discrete time. Without assuming the existence of a dominating probability measure, we derive the extensions of classical results on uniform integrability, optional stopping of martingales, and martingale convergence. We also give a theory of BSDEs in the context of sublinear expectations and a finite-state space, including general existence and comparison results.
This paper is concerned with the connection between G-Brownian Motion and analytic functions. We introduce the complex version of sublinear expectation, and then do the stochastic analysis in this framework. Furthermore, the conformal G-Brownian Motion is introduced together with a representation, and the corresponding conformal invariance is shown.
This paper considers the nonlinear theory of G-martingales as introduced by Peng. A martingale representation theorem for this theory is proved by using the techniques and the results established in an accompanying paper for the second order stochastic target problems and the second order backward stochastic differential equations. In particular, this representation provides a hedging strategy in a market with an uncertain volatility.
Strassen's classical martingale coupling theorem states that two real-valued random variables are ordered in the convex (resp.\ increasing convex) stochastic order if and only if they admit a martingale (resp.\ submartingale) coupling. By analyzing topological properties of spaces of probability measures equipped with a Wasserstein metric and applying a measurable selection theorem, we prove a conditional version of this result for real-valued random variables conditioned on a random element taking values in a general measurable space. We also provide an analogue of the conditional martingale …
The central limit theorem of martingales is the fundamental tool for studying the convergence of stochastic processes, especially stochastic integrals and differential equations. In this paper, general central limit theorems and functional central limit theorems are obtained for martingale like random variables under the sub-linear expectation. As applications, the Lindeberg central limit theorem and functional central limit theorem are obtained for independent but not necessarily identically distributed random variables, and a new proof of the Lévy characterization of a G-Brownian motion with…
In this paper we survey and further study partial sums of a stationary process via approximation with a martingale with stationary differences. Such an approximation is useful for transferring from the martingale to the original process the conditional central limit theorem. We study both approximations in L_2 and in L_1. The results complement the work of Dedecker Merlevede and Volny (2007), Zhao and Woodroofe (2008), Gordin and Peligrad (2009). The method provides an unitary treatment of many limiting results for dependent random variables including classes of mixing sequences, additive func…
We formulate and solve the martingale problem in a nonlinear expectation space. Unlike the classical work of Stroock and Varadhan (1969) where the linear operator in the associated PDE is naturally defined from the corresponding diffusion process, the main difficulty in the nonlinear setting is to identify an appropriate class of nonlinear operators for the associated fully nonlinear PDEs. Based on the analysis of the martingale problem, we introduce the notion of weak solution for stochastic differential equations under nonlinear expectations and obtain an existence theorem under the Hölder c…
Given a real valued and time-inhomogeneous martingale diffusion X, we investigate the properties of functions defined by the conditional expectation f(t,X_t)=E[g(X_T)|F_t]. We show that whenever g is monotonic or Lipschitz continuous then f(t,x) will also be monotonic or Lipschitz continuous in x. If g is convex then f(t,x) will be convex in x and decreasing in t. We also define the marginal support of a process and show that it almost surely contains the paths of the process. Although f need not be jointly continuous, we show that it will be continuous on the marginal support of X. We prove t…
This note provides a conditional Berry-Esseen bound for the sum of a martingale difference sequence $\{X_i\}_{i=1}^n$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d\ge 1$, adapted to a filtration $\{\mathcal{F}_i\}_{i=1}^n$. We approximate the conditional distribution of $S=\sum_{i=1}^n X_i$ given some $σ$-field $\mathcal{F}_0\subset \mathcal{F}_1$ by that of a mean-zero normal random vector having the same conditional variance given $\mathcal{F}_0 $ as the vector $S$. Assuming that the conditional variances $\mathsf{E}[X_iX_i^{\top}\mid\mathcal{F}_{i-1}]$, $i\ge 1$, are $\mathcal{F}_0$-measurable and non-singular, an…
In this article, a sublinear expectation induced by $G$-expectation is introduced, which is called $G$-evaluation for convenience. As an application, we prove that any $ξ\in L^β_G(Ω_T)$ with some $β>1$ the decomposition theorem holds and any $β>1$ integrable symmetric $G$-martingale can be represented as an It$\hat{o}'s$ integral w.r.t $G$-Brownian motion. As a byproduct, we prove a regular property for $G$-martingale: Any $G$-martingale $\{M_t\}$ has a quasi-continuous version
The central limit theorem of martingales is the fundamental tool for studying the convergence of stochastic processes. The central limit theorem and functional central limit theorem are obtained for martingale like random variables under the sub-linear expectation by Zhang (2019). In this paper, we consider the multi-dimensional martingale like random vectors and establish a functional central limit theorem. As applications, the Lindeberg central limit theorem for independent random vectors is established, and the sufficient and necessary conditions of the central limit theorem for independent…
We give a Cramér moderate deviation expansion for martingales with differences having finite conditional moments of order $2+ρ, ρ\in (0,1],$ and finite one-sided conditional exponential moments. The upper bound of the range of validity and the remainder of our expansion are both optimal. Consequently, it leads to a "half-side" moderate deviation principle for martingales. It is worth mentioning that our result is new even for independent random variables. Moreover, applications to quantile coupling inequality, $β$-mixing and $ψ$-mixing sequences are discussed.
This paper analyzes the support of the conditional distribution of optimal martingale transport plans in higher dimension. In the context of a distance coupling in dimension larger than 2, previous results established by Ghoussoub, Kim & Lim show that this conditional transport is concentrated on its own Choquet boundary. Moreover, when the target measure is atomic, they prove that the support is concentrated on d+1 points, and conjecture that this result is valid for arbitrary target measure. We provide a structure result of the support of the conditional optimal transport for general Lipschi…
The objective of this paper is to study the local time and Tanaka formula of symmetric $G$-martingales. We introduce the local time of $G$-martingales and show that they belong to $G$-expectation space $L_{G}^{2}(Ω_{T})$. The bicontinuous modification of local time is obtained. We finally give the Tanaka formula for convex functions of $G$-martingales.
In this paper, we establish Girsanov's formula for $G$-Brownian motion. Peng (2007, 2008) constructed $G$-Brownian motion on the space of continuous paths under a sublinear expectation called $G$-expectation; as obtained by Denis et al. (2011), $G$-expectation is represented as the supremum of linear expectations with respect to martingale measures of a certain class. Our argument is based on this representation with an enlargement of the associated class of martingale measures, and on Girsanov's formula for martingales in the classical stochastic analysis. The methodology differs from that of…
Monotone processes, just like martingales, can often be recovered from their final values. Examples include running maxima of supermartingales, as well as running maxima, local times, and various integral functionals of sticky processes such as fractional Brownian motion. An interesting corollary is that any positive local martingale can be reconstructed from its final value and its global maximum. These results rely on the notion of conditional infimum, which is developed for a large class of complete lattices. The framework is sufficiently general to handle also more exotic examples, such as…
In this paper, we study representative investor's G-utility maximization problem by G-martingale approach in the framework of G-expectation space proposed by Peng \cite{Pe19}. Financial market has only a bond and a stock with uncertainty characterized by G-Brownian motions. The routine idea of \cite{Wxz} fails because that the quadratic variation process of a G-Brownian motion is also a stochastic process. To overcome this difficulty, an extended nonlinear expectation should be pulled in. A sufficient condition of G-utility maximization is presented firstly. In the case of log-utility, an expl…
We characterize the properties of convexity, compactness and preservation of upper hemicontinuity for conditional expectations of correspondences. These results are then applied to obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of pure strategy equilibria in Bayesian games.
Generalized conditional expectations, optional projections and predictable projections of stochastic processes play important roles in the general theory of stochastic processes, semimartingale theory and stochastic calculus. They share some important properties with ordinary conditional expectations. While the characterization of ordinary conditional expectations has been studied by several authors, no similar work seems to have been done for these three concepts. This paper aims at undertaking this task by giving And$\hat{o}$-Douglas type characterization theorem for each of them.
The density hypothesis on random times becomes now a standard in modeling of risks. One of the basic reasons to introduce the density hypothesis is the desire to have a computable credit risk model. However, recent work shows that merely an existence of a density function for the conditional law of the random times will not be enough for the purposes of some numerical implantation problems. It becomes necessary to have models with martingales of density functions evolving along with the development of the information flow, in particular, to have Markovian martingales of density functions deter…
We prove that the exponential distribution is the only one which satisfies a regression identity. This identity involves conditional expectation of the sample mean of record values given two record values outside of the sample.
In this paper, we continue to explore the consistence and usability of Probability Bracket Notation (PBN) proposed in our previous articles. After a brief review of PBN with dimensional analysis, we investigate probability spaces in terms of PBN by introducing probability spaces associated with random variables (R.V) or associated with stochastic processes (S.P). Next, we express several important properties of conditional expectation (CE) and some their proofs in PBN. Then, we introduce martingales based on sequence of R.V or based on filtration in PBN. In the process, we see PBN can be used …
For a set-valued stochastic sequence $(G_n)_{n=0}^N$ with relatively open convex values $G_n(ω)$ we give a criterion for the existence of an adapted sequence $(x_n)_{n=0}^N$ of selectors, admitting an equivalent martingale measure. Mentioned criterion is expressed in terms of supports of the regular conditional upper distributions of the elements $G_n$. This result is a refinement of the main result of author's previous paper (Teor. Veroyatnost. i Primen., 2005, 50:3, 480--500), where the sets $G_n(ω)$ were assumed to be open and where were asked if the openness condition can be relaxed.
A known property of conditional expectation is extended to the framework of Markov kernels. Its meaning in terms of densities is provided. Some examples located in the field of clinical diagnosis are presented to delimit the main result of the paper.
We derive upper bounds on the tail conditional expectation of binomial and Poisson random variables. Those upper bounds are subsequently employed to the problem of obtaining non-asymptotic lower bounds on the probability that the aforementioned random variables are significantly larger than their expectation.
In this paper, we define a dynamically consistent conditional G-expectation in space $\mathbb{L}^{p}$, and give the related stochastic calculus of Itô's type, especially get Itô's formula for a general $C^{1,2}$-function.
In this paper we extend the definition of time conditional G-expectations $\mathbb{\hat{E}}_{t}[\cdot]$ to a larger domain on which the dynamical consistency still holds. In fact we can consistently define, by taking the limit, the time conditional expectations for each random variable $X$ which is the downward limit (resp. upward limit) of a monotone sequence $\{X_{i}\}$ in $L_{G}^{1}(Ω)$. To accomplish this procedure, some careful analysis is needed. Moreover, we give a suitable definition of stopping times and obtain the optional stopping theorem. We also provide some basic and interesting …
In this paper, we investigate the convergence of products of conditional expectation operators. We show that if $(Ω,\cal{F},P)$ is a probability space that is not purely atomic, then divergent sequences of products of conditional expectation operators involving 3 or 4 sub-$σ$-fields of $\cal{F}$ can be constructed for a large class of random variables in $L^2(Ω,\cal{F},P)$. This settles in the negative a long-open conjecture. On the other hand, we show that if $(Ω,\cal{F},P)$ is a purely atomic probability space, then products of conditional expectation operators involving any finite set of su…
We present some regularity properties (convexity, weak/weak* compactness and preservation of weak/weak* upper hemicontinuity) for Bochner/Gelfand conditional expectation of Banach valued correspondences under the nowhere equivalence condition. These regularity properties for Bochner/Gelfand integral of Banach valued correspondences are obtained as corollaries. Similar properties for regular conditional distributions are also covered by the corresponding results for Gelfand conditional expectation of correspondences. We prove the necessity of the nowhere equivalence condition for any of these p…
We consider filtration consistent nonlinear expectations in probability spaces satisfying only the usual conditions and separability. Under a domination assumption, we demonstrate that these nonlinear expectations can be expressed as the solutions to Backward Stochastic Differential Equations with Lipschitz continuous drivers, where both the martingale and the driver terms are permitted to jump, and the martingale representation is infinite dimensional. To establish this result, we show that this domination condition is sufficient to guarantee that the comparison theorem for BSDEs will hold, a…
We give a variational formulation for $-\log\mathbb{E}_ν\left[e^{-f}|\mathcal{F}_t\right]$ for a large class of measures $ν$. We give a refined entropic characterization of the invertibility of some perturbations of the identity. We also discuss the attainability of the infimum in the variational formulation and obtain a Prékopa-Leindler theorem for conditional expectations.
This paper deals with rates of convergence in the strong law of large numbers, in the Baum-Katz form, for partial sums of Banach space valued random variables. The results are then applied to solve similar problems for weighted partial sums of conditional expectations. They are further used to treat partial sums of powers of a reversible Markov chain operator. The method of proof is based on martingale approximation. The conditions are expressed in terms moments of the individual summands.
We represent fractional conditional expectations of a functional of fractional Brownian motion as a convergent series in L^2 space. When the target random variable is some function of a discrete trajectory of fractional Brownian motion, we obtain a backward Taylor series representation; when the target functional is generated by a continuous fractional filtration, the series representation is obtained by applying a "frozen path" operator and an exponential operator to the functional. Three examples are provided to show that our representation gives useful series expansions of ordinary expectat…
We derive two conditional expectation bounds, which we use to simplify cryptographic security proofs. The first bound relates the expectation of a bounded random variable and the average of its conditional expectations with respect to a set of i.i.d. random objects. It shows, under certain conditions, that the conditional expectation average has a small tail probability when the expectation of the random variable is sufficiently large. It is used to simplify the proof that the existence of weakly one-way functions implies the existence of strongly one-way functions. The second bound relaxes th…
We find a simple expression for the probability density of $\int \exp (B_s - s/2) ds$ in terms of its distribution function and the distribution function for the time integral of $\exp (B_s + s/2)$. The relation is obtained with a change of measure argument where expectations over events determined by the time integral are replaced by expectations over the entire probability space. We develop precise information concerning the lower tail probabilities for these random variables as well as for time integrals of geometric Brownian motion with arbitrary constant drift. In particular, $E[ \exp\big…
In this paper, we introduce the concept of hyperbolic valued random variables, their expectation and moments. We develop the hyperbolic analogue of Binomial and Poisson distributions. We study some of the properties of expectation on the basis of decomposition of a hyperbolic number into idempotent components. Finally we define conditional expectation of hyperbolic valued random variable and study some of its basic properties. Our random variable can take values which are zero divisors and this is the important part of this study.
A necessary and sufficient condition on a sequence $\{\mathfrak{A}_n\}_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$ of $σ$-subalgebras that assures convergence almost every where of conditional expectations is given.
After a brief introduction to Probability Bracket Notation (PBN), indicator operator and conditional density operator (CDO), we investigate probability spaces associated with various quantum systems: system with one observable (discrete or continuous), system with two commutative observables (independent or dependent) and a system of indistinguishable non-interacting many-particles. In each case, we derive unified expressions of conditional expectation (CE), conditional probability (CP), and absolute probability (AP): they have the same format for discrete or continuous spectrum; they are defi…
A non-Euclidean generalization of conditional expectation is introduced and characterized as the minimizer of expected intrinsic squared-distance from a manifold-valued target. The computational tractable formulation expresses the non-convex optimization problem as transformations of Euclidean conditional expectation. This gives computationally tractable filtering equations for the dynamics of the intrinsic conditional expectation of a manifold-valued signal and is used to obtain accurate numerical forecasts of efficient portfolios by incorporating their geometric structure into the estimates.
For a linear combination of random variables, fix some confidence level and consider the quantile of the combination at this level. We are interested in the partial derivatives of the quantile with respect to the weights of the random variables in the combination. It turns out that under suitable conditions on the joint distribution of the random variables the derivatives exist and coincide with the conditional expectations of the variables given that their combination just equals the quantile. Moreover, using this result, we deduce formulas for the derivatives with respect to the weights of t…
We study the conditional distribution of zeros of a Gaussian system of random polynomials (and more generally, holomorphic sections), given that the polynomials or sections vanish at a point p (or a fixed finite set of points). The conditional distribution is analogous to the pair correlation function of zeros, but we show that it has quite a different small distance behavior. In particular, the conditional distribution does not exhibit repulsion of zeros in dimension one. To prove this, we give universal scaling asymptotics for the conditional zero distribution around p. The key tool is the c…
We consider dynamic sublinear expectations (i.e., time-consistent coherent risk measures) whose scenario sets consist of singular measures corresponding to a general form of volatility uncertainty. We derive a càdlàg nonlinear martingale which is also the value process of a superhedging problem. The superhedging strategy is obtained from a representation similar to the optional decomposition. Furthermore, we prove an optional sampling theorem for the nonlinear martingale and characterize it as the solution of a second order backward SDE. The uniqueness of dynamic extensions of static sublinear…
Consider a pair of random vectors $(\mathbf{X},\mathbf{Y}) $ and the conditional expectation operator $\mathbb{E}[\mathbf{X}|\mathbf{Y}=\mathbf{y}]$. This work studies analytic properties of the conditional expectation by characterizing various derivative identities. The paper consists of two parts. In the first part of the paper, a general derivative identity for the conditional expectation is derived. Specifically, for the Markov chain $\mathbf{U} \leftrightarrow \mathbf{X} \leftrightarrow \mathbf{Y}$, a compact expression for the Jacobian matrix of $\mathbb{E}[\mathbf{U}|\mathbf{Y}=\mathbf{…
