Given a parametrization of a rational plane algebraic curve C, some explicit adjoint pencils on C are described in terms of determinants. Moreover, some generators of the Rees algebra associated to this parametrization are presented. The main ingredient developed in this paper is a detailed study of the elimination ideal of two homogeneous polynomials in two homogeneous variables that form a regular sequence.
A $\mathit{\text{moving frame}}$ at a rational curve is a basis of vectors moving along the curve. When the rational curve is given parametrically by a row vector $\mathbf{a}$ of univariate polynomials, a moving frame with important algebraic properties can be defined by the columns of an invertible polynomial matrix $P$, such that $\mathbf{a} P=[\gcd(\mathbf{a}),0\ldots,0]$. A $\mathit{\text{degree-optimal moving frame}}$ has column-wise minimal degree, where the degree of a column is defined to be the maximum of the degrees of its components. Algebraic moving frames are closely related to th…
We study the multiplicity of the jumping numbers of an $\mathfrak m$-primary ideal $\mathfrak a$ in a two-dimensional local ring with a rational singularity. The formula we provide for the multiplicities leads to a very simple and efficient method to detect whether a given rational number is a jumping number. We also give an explicit description of the Poincaré series of multiplier ideals associated to $\mathfrak a$ proving, in particular, that it is a rational function.
The aim of this paper is to study mixed multiplier ideals associated to a tuple of ideals in a two-dimensional local ring with a rational singularity. We are interested in the partition of the real positive orthant given by the regions where the mixed multiplier ideals are constant. In particular we reveal which information encoded in a mixed multiplier ideal determines its corresponding jumping wall and we provide an algorithm to compute all the constancy regions, and their corresponding mixed multiplier ideals, in any desired range.
In this note we describe the minimal resolution of the ideal $I_f$, the saturation of the Jacobian ideal of a nearly free plane curve $C:f=0$. In particular, it follows that this ideal $I_f$ can be generated by at most 4 polynomials. Related general results by Hassanzadeh and Simis on the saturation of codimension 2 ideals are discussed in detail. Some applications to rational cuspidal plane curves and to line arrangements are also given.
The main aim of this paper is to classify Ulrich ideals and Ulrich modules over two-dimensional Gorenstein rational singularities (rational double points) from a geometric point of view. To achieve this purpose, we introduce the notion of (weakly) special Cohen-Macaulay modules with respect to ideals, and study the relationship between those modules and Ulrich modules with respect to good ideals.
The aim of this paper is to study jumping numbers and multiplier ideals of any ideal in a two-dimensional local ring with a rational singularity. In particular we reveal which information encoded in a multiplier ideal determines the next jumping number. This leads to an algorithm to compute sequentially the jumping numbers and the whole chain of multiplier ideals in any desired range. As a consequence of our method we develop the notion of jumping divisor that allows to describe the jump between two consecutive multiplier ideals. In particular we find a unique minimal jumping divisor that is s…
We consider a rational map $ϕ: \mathbb{P}_k^{m} \dashrightarrow \mathbb{P}_k^n$ that is a parameterization of an $m$-dimensional variety. Our main goal is to study the $(m-1)$-dimensional fibers of $ϕ$ in relation to the $m$-th local cohomology modules of the Rees algebra of its base ideal.
As in our previous work [1] we address the problem to determine the splitting of the normal bundle of rational curves. With apolarity theory we are able to characterize some particular subvarieties in some Hilbert scheme of rational curves, defined by the splitting type of the normal bundle and the restricted tangent bundle.
We develop the theory of rational ideals for arbitrary associative algebras R without assuming the standard finiteness conditions, noetherianness or the Goldie property. The Amitsur-Martindale ring of quotients replaces the classical ring of quotients which underlies the previous definition of rational ideals but is not available in a general setting. Our main result concerns rational actions of an affine algebraic group G on R. Working over an algebraically closed base field, we prove an existence and uniqueness result for generic rational ideals: for every G-rational ideal I of R, the closed…
If $\X \subset ¶^n$ is a reduced and irreducible projective variety, it is interesting to find the equations describing the (higher) secant varieties of $\X$. In this paper we find those equations in the following cases: $\X = ¶^{n_1}\times...\times¶^{n_t}\times¶^n$ is the Segre embedding of the product and $n$ is "large" with respect to the $n_i$ (Theorem 2.4); $\X$ is a Segre-Veronese embedding of some products with 2 or three factors; $\X$ is a Del Pezzo surface.
Given a smooth curve of genus 2 embedded in P^(d-2) with a complete linear system of degree d>=6, we list all types of rational normal scrolls arising from linear systems g^1_2 and g^1_3 on C. Furthermore, we give a description of the ideal of such a curve of genus 2 embedded in P^(d-2) as a sum of the ideal of the two-dimensional scroll defined by the unique g^1_2 on C and the ideal of a three-dimensional scroll arising from a g^1_3 on C and not containing the scroll defined by the g^1_2 on C.
We consider the notion of mixed multiplicities for multigraded modules by using Hilbert series, and this is later applied to study the projective degrees of rational maps. We use a general framework to determine the projective degrees of a rational map via a computation of the multiplicity of the saturated special fiber ring. As specific applications, we provide explicit formulas for all the projective degrees of rational maps determined by perfect ideals of height two or by Gorenstein ideals of height three.
In this paper we study ideals of points lying on rational normal curves defined in projective plane and projective $ 3 $-space. We give an explicit formula for the value of Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity for their ordinary powers. Moreover, we compare the $ m $-th symbolic and ordinary powers for such ideals in order to show whenever the $ m $-th symbolic defect is non-zero.
The Gröbner stratum of a monomial ideal $\id{j}$ is an affine variety that parametrizes the family of all ideals having $\id{j}$ as initial ideal (with respect to a fixed term ordering). The Gröbner strata can be equipped in a natural way of a structure of homogeneous variety and are in a close connection with Hilbert schemes of subvarieties in the projective space $\PP^n$. Using properties of the Gröbner strata we prove some sufficient conditions for the rationality of components of $\hilb_{p(z)}^n$. We show for instance that all the smooth, irreducible components in $\hilb_{p(z)}^n$ (or in i…
This note is written for the Festschrift in honor of Professor Christer Kiselman. Multiplier ideal sheaves identify the location and the extent of the failure of crucial estimates. In this note we will discuss and explain the historic evolution of the notion of multiplier ideal sheaves, especially the interpretation from the viewpoint of destabilizing subsheaves in the context of terminating or bounding an infinite process. We will also discuss the approach of constructing rational curves in Fano manifolds by using dynamic multiplier ideal sheaves and singularity-magnifying complex Monge-Amper…
We describe a minimal set of generators of the defining ideal of the Rees Algebra associated to a proper parametrization of any monoid hypersurface. In the case of plane curves, we recover a known description for rational parametrizations having a syzygy of minimal degree (μ=1). We also show that our approach can be applied to parametrizations of rational surfaces having a Hilbert-Burch resolution with μ_1=μ_2=1.
In this paper we introduce an effective method to construct rational deformations between couples of Borel-fixed ideals. These deformations are governed by flat families, so that they correspond to rational curves on the Hilbert scheme. Looking globally at all the deformations among Borel-fixed ideals defining points on the same Hilbert scheme, we are able to give a new proof of the connectedness of the Hilbert scheme and to introduce a new criterion to establish whenever a set of points defined by Borel ideals lies on a common component of the Hilbert scheme. The paper contains a detailed alg…
In this article, we study the jumping numbers of an ideal in the local ring at rational singularity on a complex algebraic surface. By understanding the contributions of reduced divisors on a fixed resolution, we are able to present an algorithm for finding of the jumping numbers of the ideal. This shows, in particular, how to compute the jumping numbers of a plane curve from the numerical data of its minimal resolution. In addition, the jumping numbers of the maximal ideal at the singular point in a Du Val or toric surface singularity are computed, and applications to the smooth case are expl…
Finite generation of the symbolic Rees ring of a space monomial prime ideal of a 3-dimensional weighted polynomial ring is a very interesting problem. Negative curves play important roles in finite generation of these rings. We are interested in the structure of the negative curve. We shall prove that negative curves are rational in many cases. We also see that the Cox ring of the blow-up of a toric variety at the point (1,1,...,1) coincides with the extended symbolic Rees ring of an ideal of a polynomial ring. For example, Roberts' second counterexample to Cowsik's question (and Hilbert's 14t…
Consider a height two ideal, $I$, which is minimally generated by $m$ homogeneous forms of degree $d$ in the polynomial ring $R=k[x,y]$. Suppose that one column in the homogeneous presenting matrix $\f$ of $I$ has entries of degree $n$ and all of the other entries of $\f$ are linear. We identify an explicit generating set for the ideal $\Cal A$ which defines the Rees algebra $\Cal R=R[It]$; so $\Cal R=S/\Cal A$ for the polynomial ring $S=R[T_1,...,T_m]$. We resolve $\Cal R$ as an $S$-module and $I^s$ as an $R$-module, for all powers $s$. The proof uses the homogeneous coordinate ring, $A=S/H$,…
We determine which tangential varieties of homogeneously embedded rational homogeneous varieties are spherical. We determine the homogeneous coordinate rings and rings of covariants of the tangential varieties of homogenously embedded compact Hermitian symmetric spaces (CHSS). We give bounds on the degrees of generators of the ideals of tangential varieties of CHSS and obtain more explicit infomation about the ideals in certain cases.
The paper presents a new algorithmic construction of a finite generating set of rational invariants for the rational action of an algebraic group on the affine space. The construction provides an algebraic counterpart of the moving frame method in differential geometry. The generating set of rational invariants appears as the coefficients of a Groebner basis, reduction with respect to which allows to express a rational invariant in terms of the generators. The replacement invariants, introduced in the paper, are tuples of algebraic functions of the rational invariants. Any invariant, whether r…
What kind of reduced monomial schemes can be obtained as a Gröbner degeneration of a smooth projective variety? Our conjectured answer is: only Stanley-Reisner schemes associated to acyclic Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complexes. This would imply, in particular, that only curves of genus zero have such a degeneration. We prove this conjecture for degrevlex orders, for elliptic curves over real number fields, for boundaries of cross-polytopes, and for leafless graphs. We discuss consequences for rational and F-rational singularities of algebras with straightening laws.
In this paper, we investigate some topics around the closed image $S$ of a rational map $λ$ given by some homogeneous elements $f_1,...,f_n$ of the same degree in a graded algebra $A$. We first compute the degree of this closed image in case $λ$ is generically finite and $f_1,...,f_n$ define isolated base points in $\Proj(A)$. We then relate the definition ideal of $S$ to the symmetric and the Rees algebras of the ideal $I=(f_1,...,f_n) \subset A$, and prove some new acyclicity criteria for the associated approximation complexes. Finally, we use these results to obtain the implicit equation of…
In this paper, we study a class of toric ideals obtained by using some geometric data of ADE trees which are the minimal resolution graphs of rational surface singularities. We compute explicit Gröbner bases for these toric ideals that are also minimal generating sets consisting of large number of binomials of degree $\leq 4$. In particular, they give rise to squarefree initial ideals as well.
Let $C \subseteq ¶^d$ denote the rational normal curve of order $d$. Its homogeneous defining ideal $I_C \subseteq \QQ[a_0,...,a_d]$ admits an $SL_2$-stable filtration $J_2 \subseteq J_4 \subseteq ... \subseteq I_C$ by sub-ideals such that the saturation of each $J_{2q}$ equals $I_C$. Hence, one can associate to $d$ a sequence of integers $(α_1,α_2,...)$ which encodes the degrees in which the successive inclusions in this filtration become trivial. In this paper we establish several lower and upper bounds on the $α_q$, using \emph{inter alia} the methods of classical invariant theory.
We show that the Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity is a rational number for an R_+-primary homogeneous ideal I=(f_1, ..., f_n) in a two-dimensional graded domain R of finite type over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic. Moreover we give a formula for the Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity in terms of certain rational numbers coming from the strong Harder-Narasimhan filtration of the syzygy bundle Syz(f_1, . . ., f_n) on the projective curve Y = Proj R.
In this work, by using Pauli matrices, we introduce four families of polynomials indexed over the positive integers. These polynomials have rational or imaginary rational coefficients. It turns out that two of these families are closely related to classical Lucas and Fibonacci polynomial sequences and hence to Lucas and Fibonacci numbers. We use one of these families to give a geometric interpretation of the 200 years old class number problems of Gauss, which is equivalent to the study of narrow ideal classes in real quadratic number fields.
A rational map $ϕ: \mathbb{P}_k^m \dashrightarrow \mathbb{P}_k^n$ is defined by homogeneous polynomials of a common degree $d$. We establish a linear bound in terms of $d$ for the number of $(m-1)$-dimensional fibers of $ϕ$, by using ideals of minors of the Jacobian matrix. In particular, we answer affirmatively Question~11 in arXiv:1511.02933v2.
We present new algorithms for computing adjoint ideals of curves and thus, in the planar case, adjoint curves. With regard to terminology, we follow Gorenstein who states the adjoint condition in terms of conductors. Our main algorithm yields the Gorenstein adjoint ideal G of a given curve as the intersection of what we call local Gorenstein adjoint ideals. Since the respective local computations do not depend on each other, our approach is inherently parallel. Over the rationals, further parallelization is achieved by a modular version of the algorithm which first computes a number of the cha…
Given an affine rational complexity-one $T$-variety $X$, we construct an explicit embedding of $X$ in affine space $\mathbb{A}^n$. We show that this embedding is well-poised, that is, every initial ideal of $I_X$ is a prime ideal, and determine the tropicalization of $X$. We then study valuations of the coordinate ring $R_X$ of $X$ which respect the torus action, showing that for full rank valuations, the natural generators of $R_X$ form a Khovanskii basis. This allows us to determine Newton-Okounkov bodies of rational projective complexity-one $T$-varieties, partially recovering (and generali…
Brown and Gordon asked whether the Poisson Dixmier-Moeglin equivalence holds for any complex affine Poisson algebra; that is, whether the sets of Poisson rational ideals, Poisson primitive ideals, and Poisson locally closed ideals coincide. In this article a complete answer is given to this question using techniques from differential-algebraic geometry and model theory. In particular, it is shown that while the sets of Poisson rational and Poisson primitive ideals do coincide, in every Krull dimension at least four there are complex affine Poisson algebras with Poisson rational ideals that are…
Since Dumnicki, Szemberg and Tutaj-Gasińska gave in 2013 in [9] the first example of a set of points in the complex projective plane such that for its homogeneous ideal I the containment of the third symbolic power in the second ordinary power fails, there has been considerable interest in searching for further examples with this property and investigating into the nature of such examples. Many examples, defined over various fields, have been found but so far there has been essentially just one example found of 19 points defined over the rationals, see [16, Theorem A, Problem 1]. In [12, Probl…
Reason for withdrawal: There is a serious mistake in the calculation of the divisor of the rational section used in the proof of Prop. 2.2.1., and with the correct value the argument does not work.
For a simple complete ideal $\wp$ of a local ring at a closed point on a smooth complex algebraic surface, we introduce an algebraic object, named Poincaré series $P_{\wp}$, that gathers in an unified way the jumping numbers and the dimensions of the vector space quotients given by consecutive multiplier ideals attached to $\wp$. This paper is devoted to prove that $P_{\wp}$ is a rational function giving an explicit expression for it.
Let K be a field of characteristic zero, alpha algebraic of degree n over K. Given a proper parametrization psi of a rational curve C, we present a new algorithm to compute the hypercircle associated to the parametrization psi. As a consequence, we can decide if the curve C is defined over K and, if not, to compute the minimum field of definition of C containing K. The algorithm exploits the conjugate curves of C but avoids computation in the normal closure of K(alpha) over K.
We study the equivalence between infinitesimal Torelli theorem for smooth hypersurfaces in rational homogeneous varieties with Picard number one and the theory of generalized Massey products. This equivalence shows that the differential of the period map vanishes on an infinitesimal deformation if and only if certain twisted differential forms are elements of the Jacobian ideal of the hypersurface. We also prove an infinitesimal Torelli theorem result for smooth hypersurfaces in log parallelizable varieties.
Motivated by recent work in the mathematics and engineering literature, we study integrability and non-tangential regularity on the two-torus for rational functions that are holomorphic on the bidisk. One way to study such rational functions is to fix the denominator and look at the ideal of polynomials in the numerator such that the rational function is square integrable. A concrete list of generators is given for this ideal as well as a precise count of the dimension of the subspace of numerators with a specified bound on bidegree. The dimension count is accomplished by constructing a natura…
We study the connection between the generation of a fat point scheme supported at general points in the plane and the behaviour of the cotangent bundle with respect to some rational curves particularly relevant for the scheme. We put forward two conjectures, giving examples and partial results in support of them.
We perform an intersection theoretic study of the rational map between two different moduli spaces of stable curves which associates to a curve its corresponding Brill-Noether locus (in the case this locus has virtual dimension 1). We then use these results to describe the cone of moving divisors on M_g. Several other applications to moduli spaces of Prym varieties are presented. In a different direction, we prove that the locus in M_g of curves failing to satisfy the Gieseker-Petri theorem is supported in codimension 1 for every possible type of linear series.
