This paper provides a precise sense in which the time t map for the Euler equations of an ideal fluid in a region in R^n (or a smooth compact n-manifold with boundary) is a Poisson map relative to the Lie-Poisson bracket associated with the group of volume preserving diffeomorphism group. This is interesting and nontrivial because in Eulerian representation, the time t maps need not be C^1 from the Sobolev class H^s to itself (where s > (n/2) + 1). The idea of how this difficulty is overcome is to exploit the fact that one does have smoothness in the Lagrangian representation and then carefully perform a Lie-Poisson reduction procedure.
The main purpose of this paper is to provide an effective procedure to study rigorously the relationship between unipolar and bipolar Euler-Poisson system in the perspective of mass. Based on the fact that the mass of an electron is far less than that of an ion, we amplify this property by letting $m_e/m_i\rightarrow 0$ and using two different singular limits to illustrate it, which are zero-electron mass limit and infinity-ion mass limit. We use the method of asymptotic expansion to handle the problem and find that the limiting process from bipolar to unipolar system is actually the process o…
In this paper, the finite time blow-up of smooth solutions to the Cauchy problem for full Euler-Poisson equations and isentropic Euler-Poisson equations with repulsive forces or attractive forces in high dimensions $(n\geq3)$ is proved for a large class of initial data. It is not required that the initial data has compact support or contains vacuum in any finite regions.
This paper studies the two-dimensional Euler-Poisson equations associated with either attractive or repulsive forces. We mainly study the Riccati system that governs the flow's gradient. Under a suitable condition, it is shown that the Euler-Poisson system admits global smooth solutions for a large set of initial configurations. This paper is a continuation of our former work [8].
We improve the recent result of Chae & Tadmor in [Comm. Math. Sci. 6(3) (2008) 785-789], proving a one-sided threshold condition which leads to finite-time breakdown of the Euler-Poisson equations in arbitrary dimension n.
Consider the scaling $\varepsilon^{1/2}(x-Vt)\to x,\ \varepsilon^{3/2}t\to t$ in the Euler-Poisson system for ion-acoustic waves \eqref{equ1}. We establish that as $\varepsilon\to 0$, the solutions to such Euler-Poisson system converge globally in time to the solutions of the Korteweg-de Vries equation.
We prove shock formation for 3D Euler-Poisson system for electron fluid plasma. The shock solution we construct is of large initial data, also compactly supported during the lifespan. In addition, the blowup time and location can be computed explicitly.
We prove that small smooth irrotational but charged perturbations of a constant background are global and go back to equilibrium in the 3D electron Euler-Poissson equation.
We consider the (repulsive) Euler-Poisson system for the electrons in two dimensions and prove that small smooth perturbations of a constant background exist for all time and remain smooth (never develop shocks). This extends to 2D the work of Guo.
We prove the finite time blow-up for $C^1$ solutions to the Euler-Poisson equations in $\Bbb R^n$, $n\geq 1$, with/without background density for initial data satisfying suitable conditions. We also find a sufficient condition for the initial data such that $C^3$ solution breaks down in finite time for the compressible Euler equations for polytropic gas flows.
We prove the unique existence of supersonic solutions of the Euler- Poisson system for potential flow in a three-dimensional rectangular cylinder when prescribing the velocity and the strength of electric field at the entrance. Overall, the main framework is similar to [1], but there are several technical differences to be taken care of vary carefully. And, it is our main goal to treat all the technical differences occurring when one considers a three dimensional supersonic solution of the steady Euler-Poisson system.
This paper studies the pressureless Euler-Poisson system and its fully non-linear counterpart, the Euler-Monge-Ampère system, where the fully non-linear Monge-Ampère equation substitutes for the linear Poisson equation. While the first is a model of plasma physics, the second is derived as a geometric approximation to the Euler incompressible equations. Using energy estimates, convergence of both systems to the Euler incompressible equations is proved.
In this work, we study the behavior of blow-up solutions to the multidimensional restricted Euler--Poisson equations which are the localized version of the full Euler--Poisson system. We provide necessary conditions for the existence of finite-time blow-up solutions in terms of the initial data, and describe the asymptotic behavior of the solutions near blow up times. We also identify a rich set of the initial data which yields global bounded solutions.
We construct a special $C^{1,α}$ blow up solution to the three dimensional system modeling electro-hydrodynamics, which is strongly coupled with incompressible Euler equation and Nernst-Planck-Poisson equation. Our construction lies on the framework established in Elgindi [11] and relies on a special solution to variant spherical Laplacian.
We establish unique existence and stability of subsonic potential flow for steady Euler-Poisson system in a multidimensional nozzle of a finite length when prescribing the electric potential difference on non-insulated boundary from a fixed point at the exit, and prescribing the pressure at the exit of the nozzle. The Euler-Poisson system for subsonic potential flow can be reduced to a nonlinear elliptic system of second order. In this paper, we develop a technique to achieve a priori $C^{1,\alp}$ estimates of solutions to a quasi-linear second order elliptic system with mixed boundary conditi…
We derive an explicit formula for global weak solutions of the one dimensional system of pressure-less Euler-Poisson equations. Our variational formulation is an extension of the well-known formula for entropy solutions of the scalar inviscid Burgers' equation: since the characteristics of the Euler-Poisson equations are parabolas, the representation of their weak solution takes the form of a "quadratic" version of the celebrated Lax-Oleinik variational formula. Three cases are considered. (i) The variational formula recovers the "sticky particle" solution in the attractive case; (ii) It repre…
This paper proves the existence of variational rotating solutions to the compressible non-isentropic Euler-Poisson equations with prescribed total mass. This extends the result of the isentropic case [Auchmuty and Beals, Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal., 1971] to the non-isentropic case. Compared with the previous result of variational rotating solutions in non-isentropic case [Wu, Journal of Differential Equations, 2015], to keep the constraint of a prescribed finite total mass, the author establishes a new variational structure the non-isentropic Euler-Poisson equations.
The Euler-Poisson equations model rotating gaseous stars. Numerous efforts have been made to establish existence and properties of the rotating star solutions. Recent interests in extrasolar planet structures require extension of the model to include a inner rocky core together with its own gravitational potential. In this paper, we discuss various extensions of the classical rotating star results to incorporate a solid core.
We show the continuity of the flow map for quasilinear symmetric hyperbolic systems with general right--hand sides in different functional setting, including weighted Sobolev spaces $H_{s,δ}$. An essential tool to achieve the continuity of the flow map is a low regularity energy estimate. We then apply these results to the Euler--Poisson system which describes various systems of physical interests.
We study the quasineutral limit of the isothermal Euler-Poisson system describing a plasma made of ions and massless electrons. The analysis is achieved in a domain of $\R^3$ and thus extends former results by Cordier and Grenier [Comm. Partial Differential Equations, 25 (2000), pp.~1099--1113], who dealt with the same problem in a one-dimensional domain without boundary.
This paper analyzes various schemes for the Euler-Poisson-Boltzmann (EPB) model of plasma physics. This model consists of the pressureless gas dynamics equations coupled with the Poisson equation and where the Boltzmann relation relates the potential to the electron density. If the quasi-neutral assumption is made, the Poisson equation is replaced by the constraint of zero local charge and the model reduces to the Isothermal Compressible Euler (ICE) model. We compare a numerical strategy based on the EPB model to a strategy using a reformulation (called REPB formulation). The REPB scheme captu…
In this paper, we study the quasineutral limit of the isothermal Euler-Poisson equation for ions, in a domain with boundary. This is a follow-up to our previous work \cite{GVHKR}, devoted to no-penetration as well as subsonic outflow boundary conditions. We focus here on the case of supersonic outflow velocities. The structure of the boundary layers and the stabilization mechanism are different.
We construct stationary axisymmetric solutions of the Euler-Poisson equations, which govern the internal structure of polytropic gaseous stars, with small constant angular velocity when the adiabatic exponent $γ$ belongs to $(\frac65,\frac32]$. The problem is formulated as a nonlinear integral equation, and is solved by iteration technique. By this method, not only we get the existence, but also we clarify properties of the solutions such as the physical vacuum condition and oblateness of the star surface.
The Euler Poisson equations describe important physical phenomena in many applications such as semiconductor modeling and plasma physics. This paper is to advance our understanding of critical threshold phenomena in such systems in the presence of different forces. We identify critical thresholds in two damped Euler Poisson systems, with and without alignment, both with attractive potential and spatially varying background state. For both systems, we give respective bounds for subcritical and supercritical regions in the space of initial configuration, thereby proving the existence of a critic…
In this paper, we consider the long wavelength limit for the quantum Euler-Poisson equation. Under the Gardner-Morikawa transform, we derive the quantum Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation by a singular perturbation method. We show that the KdV dynamics can be seen at time interval of order $O(ε^{-3/2})$. When the nondimensional quantum parameter $H=2$, it reduces to the inviscid Burgers equation.
We provide a complete description of the critical threshold phenomena for the two-dimensional localized Euler-Poisson equations, introduced by the authors in [Liu & Tadmor, Comm. Math Phys., To appear]. Here, the questions of global regularity vs. finite-time breakdown for the 2D Restricted Euler-Poisson solutions are classified in terms of precise explicit formulae, describing a remarkable variety of critical threshold surfaces of initial configurations. In particular, it is shown that the 2D critical thresholds depend on the relative size of three quantities: the initial density, the initial…
The one-dimensional Euler-Poisson system arises in the study of phenomena of plasma such as plasma solitons, plasma sheaths, and double layers. When the system is rescaled by the Gardner-Morikawa transformation, the rescaled system is known to be formally approximated by the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation. In light of this, we show existence of solitary wave solutions of the Euler-Poisson system in the stretched moving frame given by the transformation, and prove that they converge to the solitary wave solution of the associated KdV equation as the small amplitude parameter tends to zero. Ou…
In this paper we consider the Euler-Poisson system (describing a plasma made of ions with a negligible ion temperature) on the Sobolev spaces $H^s(\R^3)$, $s > 5/2$. Using a geometric approach we show that for any time $T > 0$ the corresponding solution map, $(ρ_0,u_0) \mapsto (ρ(T),u(T))$, is nowhere locally uniformly continuous. On the other hand it turns out that the trajectories of the ions are analytic curves in $\R^3$.
This paper is concerned with the three dimensional compressible Euler--Poisson equations with moving physical vacuum boundary condition. This fluid system is usually used to describe the motion of a self-gravitating inviscid gaseous star. The local existence of classical solutions for initial data in certain weighted Sobolev spaces is established in the case that the adiabatic index satisfies $1 < γ< 3$.
By introducing a new averaged quantity with a fast decay weight to perform Sideris's argument (Commun Math Phys, 1985) developed for the Euler Equations, we extend the formation of singularities of classical solution to the 3D Euler Equations established in Sideris (1985) and Makino et al. (Jpn J Appl Math, 1986) for the initial data with compactly supported disturbances to the spherically symmetric solution with general initial data in Sobolev space. Moreover, we also prove the formation of singularities of the spherically symmetric solutions to the 3D Euler-Poisson Equations, but remove the …
We consider the multidimensional Euler-Poisson equations with non-zero heat conduction, which consist of a coupled hyperbolic-parabolic-elliptic system of balance laws. We make a deep analysis on the coupling effects and establish a local well-posedness of classical solutions to the Cauchy problem pertaining to data in the critical Besov space. Proof mainly relies on a standard iteration argument. To achieve it, a new Moser-type inequality is developed by the Bony' decomposition.
The nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation can be derived as a formal approximation equation describing the envelopes of slowly modulated spatially and temporarily oscillating wave packet-like solutions to the ion Euler-Poisson equation. In this paper, we rigorously justify such approximation by giving error estimates in Sobolev norms between exact solutions of the ion Euler-Poisson system and the formal approximation obtained via the NLS equation. The justification consists of several difficulties such as the resonances and loss of regularity, due to the quasilinearity of the problem. These dif…
We address the structural stability of 3-D axisymmetric subsonic flows with nonzero swirl for the steady compressible Euler-Poisson system in a cylinder supplemented with non small boundary data. A special Helmholtz decomposition of the velocity field is introduced for 3-D axisymmetric flow with a nonzero swirl(=angular momentum density) component. With the newly introduced decomposition, a quasilinear elliptic system of second order is derived from the elliptic modes in Euler-Poisson system for subsonic flows. Due to the nonzero swirl, the main difficulties lie in the solvability of a singula…
This article is the continued version of the analytical blowup solutions for 2-dimensional Euler-Poisson equations in "M.W. With the extension of the blowup solutions with radial symmetry for the isothermal Euler-Poisson equations in R^2, other special blowup solutions in R^N with non-radial symmetry are…
We investigate rescaling transformations for the Vlasov-Poisson and Euler-Poisson systems and derive in the plasma physics case Lyapunov functionals which can be used to analyze dispersion effects. The method is also used for studying the long time behaviour of the solutions and can be applied to other models in kinetic theory (2-dimensional symmetric Vlasov-Poisson system with an external magnetic field), in fluid dynamics (Euler system for gases) and in quantum physics (Schrödinger-Poisson system, nonlinear Schrödinger equation).
We study the stabilities and classical solutions of Euler-Poisson equations of describing the evolution of the gaseous star in astrophysics. In fact, we extend the study the stabilities of Euler-Poisson equations with or without frictional damping term to some special dimensional spaces. Besides, by using the second inertia function in 2 dimension of Euler-Poisson equations, we prove the non-global existence of classical solutions with $2\int_Ω(ρ| u| ^{2}+2P)dx<gM^{2}-ε$, for any $γ$.
In this note we derive the descriptions of the system of Euler-Poisson equations which governs the hydrodynamic evolution of gaseous stars in various co-ordinate systems. This note does not contain essentially new results for astrophysicists, but mathematically rigorous derivations cannot be found in the literatures written by physicists so that it will be useful to prepare details of rather stupidly honest derivations of the equations in various flames when we are going to push forward the mathematical research of the problem.
We consider several pressureless variants of the compressible Euler equation driven by nonlocal repulsionattraction and alignment forces with Poisson interaction. Under an energy admissibility criterion, we prove existence of global measure-valued solutions, i.e., very weak solutions described by a classical Young measure together with appropriate concentration defects. We then investigate the evolution of a relative energy functional to compare a measure-valued solution to a regular solution emanating from the same initial datum. This leads to a (partial) weak-strong uniqueness principle.
This paper deals with the existence of BV solution for the Euler-Poisson system endowed with a $γ$ pressure law. More precisely, we prove the existence of weak solution in the BV framework with arbitrary large initial data when $γ=1+2ε$ satisfies a smallness condition. We use the Glimm scheme combined with a splitting method as introduced in [Poupaud, Rascle and Vila, J. Differential Equations, 1995]. Existence of BV solution of 1-D isentropic Euler equation for large data and $γ=1+2ε$ is proved in [Nishida and Smoller, Comm. Pure Appl. Math, 1973]. Due to the presence of electric field, the d…
The dynamics of gaseous stars can be described by the Euler-Poisson system. Inspired by Rein's stability result for $γ>{4/3}$, we prove the nonlinear instability of steady states for the adiabatic exponent $γ={6/5}$ in spherically symmetric and isentropic motion.
We consider the Cauchy problem for the barotropic Euler system coupled to Helmholtz or Poisson equations, in the whole space. We assume that the initial density is small enough, and that the initial velocity is close to some reference vector field u0 such that the spectrum of Du0 is bounded away from zero. We prove the existence of a global unique solution with (fractional) Sobolev regularity, and algebraic time decay estimates. Our work extends the papers by D. Serre and M. Grassin [20, 21, 43] dedicated to the compressible Euler system without coupling and integer regularity exponents.
A fundamental two-fluid model for describing dynamics of a plasma is the Euler-Poisson system, in which compressible ion and electron fluids interact with their self-consistent electrostatic force. Global smooth electron dynamics were constructed in Guo due to dispersive effect of the electric field. In this paper, we construct global smooth irrotational solutions with small amplitude for ion dynamics in the Euler-Poisson system.
This paper is concerned with multidimensional Euler-Poisson equations for plasmas. The equations take the form of Euler equations for the conservation laws of the mass density and current density for charge-carriers (electrons and ions), coupled to a Poisson equation for the electrostatic potential. We study the limit to zero of some physical parameters which arise in the scaled Euler-Poisson equations, more precisely, which is the limit of vanishing ratio of the electron mass to the ion mass. When the initial data are small in critical Besov spaces, by virtue of the ``Shizuta-Kawashima" skew-…
