Orientifolds of type II string theory admit a certain set of generalized NS-NS fluxes, including not only the three-form field strength H, but also metric and non-geometric fluxes, which are related to H by T-duality. We describe in general how these fluxes appear as parameters of an effective N=1 supergravity theory in four dimensions, and in particular how certain generalized NS-NS fluxes can act as charges for R-R axions, leading to D-term contributions to the effective scalar potential. We illustrate these phenomena in type IIB with the example of a certain orientifold of T^6/Z_4.
The standard notion of NS-NS 3-form flux is lifted to Hitchin's generalized geometry. This generalized flux is given in terms of an integral of a modified Nijenhuis operator over a generalized 3-cycle. Explicitly evaluating the generalized flux in a number of familiar examples, we show that it can compute three-form flux, geometric flux and non-geometric Q-flux. Finally, a generalized connection that acts on generalized vectors is described and we show how the flux arises from it.
We perform a systematic analysis of generic string flux compactifications, making use of Exceptional Generalized Geometry (EGG) as an organizing principle. In particular, we establish the precise map between fluxes, gaugings of maximal 4d supergravity and EGG, identifying the complete set of gaugings that admit an uplift to 10d heterotic or type IIB supegravity backgrounds. Our results reveal a rich structure, involving new deformations of 10d supergravity backgrounds, such as the RR counterparts of the $β$-deformation. These new deformations are expected to provide the natural extension of th…
In the recent years a lot of attention is focused on unconventional string compactifications. A variety of different but related frameworks was developed in order to address issues such as duality invariance, non-geometry and non-commutativity in string theory. In this contribution we review and clarify the approach that goes through matrix models. Furthermore, we discuss some connections of this framework to other related approaches.
In this paper we construct a special geometry over the moduli space of type II string vacua with both NS and RR fluxes turning on. Depending on what fluxes are turning on we divide into three cases of moduli space of generalized structures. They are respectively generalized Calabi-Yau structures, generalized Calabi-Yau metric structures and ${\cal N} =1$ generalized string vacua. It is found that the $d d^{\cal J}$ lemma can be established for all three cases. With the help of the $d d^{\cal J}$ lemma we identify the moduli space locally as a subspace of $d_{H}$ cohomologies. This leads natura…
In the context of type IIB orientifold compactification with the presence of (non-)geometric fluxes, we conjecture a modular completed version of the generalized flux-orbits of various NS-NS and RR fluxes. Subsequently, considering two explicit examples with frozen complex structure moduli, we illustrate the utility of these new flux orbits in a very compact rearrangement of the four dimensional effective scalar potential.
Type 0A string theory in the (2,4k) superconformal minimal model backgrounds, with background ZZ D-branes or R-R fluxes can be formulated non-perturbatively. The branes and fluxes have a description as threshold bound states in an associated one-dimensional quantum mechanics which has a supersymmetric structure, familiar from studies of the generalized KdV system. The relevant bound state wavefunctions in this problem have unusual asymptotics (they are not normalizable in general, and break supersymmetry) which are consistent with the underlying description in terms of open and closed string s…
The four-dimensional N=1 supergravity theories arising in compactifications of type IIA and type IIB on generalized orientifold backgrounds with background fluxes are discussed. The Kahler potentials are derived for reductions on SU(3) structure orientifolds and shown to consist of the logarithm of the two Hitchin functionals. These are functions of even and odd forms parameterizing the geometry of the internal manifold, the B-field and the dilaton. The superpotentials induced by background fluxes and the non-Calabi-Yau geometry are determined by a reduction of the type IIA and type IIB fermio…
We show that the space of generalized fluxes - momentum space - for loop quantum gravity cannot be constructed by Fourier transforming the projective limit construction of the space of generalized connections - position space - due to the non-abelianess of the gauge group SU(2). From the abelianization of SU(2), U(1)^3, we learn that the space of generalized fluxes turns out to be an inductive limit, and we determine the consistency conditions the fluxes should satisfy under coarse-graining of the underlying graphs. We comment on the applications to loop quantum cosmology, in particular, how t…
We compute the four-dimensional gaugino mass for a Dp-brane extended in spacetime and wrapping a cycle on the internal geometry in a warped compactification with fluxes. Motivated by the backreaction of gaugino bilinear VEVs, we use Generalized Complex Geometry to characterize the internal geometry as well as the cycle wrapped by the brane. We find that the RR fluxes and the non-closure of the generalized complex structures combine in the gaugino mass terms in the same form as they do in the bulk superpotential, while for the NSNS fluxes there is a crucial minus sign in the component normal to…
We study ten-dimensional supersymmetric vacua with NSNS non-geometric fluxes, in the framework of $β$-supergravity. We first provide expressions for the fermionic supersymmetry variations. Specifying a compactification ansatz to four dimensions, we deduce internal Killing spinor equations. These supersymmetry conditions are then reformulated in terms of pure spinors, similarly to standard supergravity vacua admitting an SU(3)xSU(3) structure in Generalized Complex Geometry. The standard d-H acting on the pure spinors is traded for a generalized Dirac operator D, depending here on the non-geome…
We study some aspects of the generalized geometry of nilmanifolds and examine to which extent different types of fluxes can coexist on them. Nilmanifolds constitute a class of homogeneous spaces which are interesting in string compactifications with fluxes since they carry geometric flux by construction. They are generalized Calabi-Yau spaces and therefore simple examples of generalized geometry at work. We identify and classify Dirac structures on nilmanifolds, which are maximally isotropic subbundles closed under the Courant bracket. In the presence of non-vanishing fluxes, these structures …
We study massless deformations of generalized calibrated cycles, which describe, in the language of generalized complex geometry, supersymmetric D-branes in N=1 supersymmetric compactifications with fluxes. We find that the deformations are classified by the first cohomology group of a Lie algebroid canonically associated to the generalized calibrated cycle, seen as a generalized complex submanifold with respect to the integrable generalized complex structure of the bulk. We provide examples in the SU(3) structure case and in a `genuine' generalized complex structure case. We discuss cases of …
In order to lift the continuous moduli space of string vacua, non-trivial fluxes may be the essential input. In this talk I summarize aspects of two approaches to compactifications in the presence of fluxes: (i) generalized Scherk-Schwarz reductions and gauged supergravity and (ii) the description of flux-deformed geometries in terms of G-structures and intrinsic torsion.
We consider type II string theory compactified on a symmetric T^6/Z_2 orientifold. We study a general class of discrete deformations of the resulting four-dimensional supergravity theory, including gaugings arising from geometric and "nongeometric'' fluxes, as well as the usual R-R and NS-NS fluxes. Solving the equations of motion associated with the resulting N = 1 superpotential, we find parametrically controllable infinite families of supersymmetric vacua with all moduli stabilized. We also describe some aspects of the distribution of generic solutions to the SUSY equations of motion for th…
Using a Kaluza-Klein reduction of the fermionic part of the D-brane action we compute D- and F-terms of the N=1 effective action for generic Calabi-Yau orientifold compactifications in the presence of a space-time filling D7-brane. We include non-trivial background fluxes for the D7-brane U(1) field strength on the internal four-cycle wrapped by the brane. First the four-dimensional fermionic spectrum arising from the D7-brane is derived and then the D- and F-terms are obtained by computing appropriate couplings of these fermionic fields. For specific examples we examine the resulting flux-ind…
It is known that the topological T-duality exchanges $H$ and $F$-fluxes. In this paper, we reformulate the topological T-duality as an exchange of two Lie algebroids in the generalized tangent bundle. Then, we apply the same formulation to the Poisson-generalized geometry, which is introduced in arXiv:1408.2649 to define $R$-fluxes as field strength associated with $β$-transformations. We propose a definition of $Q$-flux associated with $β$-diffeomorphisms, and show that the topological T-duality exchanges $R$ and $Q$-fluxes.
Fibrations of flux backgrounds by supersymmetric cycles are investigated. For an internal six-manifold M with static SU(2) structure and mirror \hat{M}, it is argued that the product M x \hat{M} is doubly fibered by supersymmetric three-tori, with both sets of fibers transverse to M and \hat{M}. The mirror map is then realized by T-dualizing the fibers. Mirror-symmetric properties of the fluxes, both geometric and non-geometric, are shown to agree with previous conjectures based on the requirement of mirror symmetry for Killing prepotentials. The fibers are conjectured to be destabilized by fl…
We construct flipped SU(5) GUT models as Type IIB flux vacua on $\Z_2\times \Z_2$ orientifolds. Turning on supergravity self-dual NSNS and RR three-form fluxes fixes the toroidal complex structure moduli and the dilaton. We give a specific example of a three-generation flipped SU(5) model with a complete Higgs sector where supersymmetry is softly broken by the supergravity fluxes in the closed string sector. All of the required Yukawa couplings are present if global U(1) factors resulting from a generalized Green-Schwarz mechanism are broken spontaneously or by world-sheet instantons. In addit…
We review recent work identifying soft SUSY-breaking terms in local type II string models with branes and magnetic fluxes. We then make a new observation about the configuration space of D-branes in Calabi-Yau backgrounds, and identify vevs for nonperturbative charged hypermultiplets in Calabi-Yau backgrounds with N=2 Fayet-Iliopoulos terms.
We describe a topological effect on configurations of D-branes in the presence of NS-NS and RR field strength fluxes. The fluxes induce the appearance of chiral anomalies on lower dimensional submanifolds of the D-brane worldvolume. This anomaly is not associated to a dynamical chiral fermion degree of freedom, but rather should be regarded as an explicit flux-induced anomalous term (Wess-Zumino term) in the action. The anomaly is cancelled by an inflow mechanism, which exploits the fact that fluxes can act as sources of RR fields. We discuss several applications of this flux-induced anomaly; …
We consider examples of D=4 string theory vacua which, although globally non-geometric, admit a local description in terms of D=10 supergravity backgrounds. We analyze such backgrounds and find that the supersymmetry spinors vary non-trivially along the internal manifold, reproducing the interpolating supergravity solutions found by Frey and Grana. Finally, we propose a simple, local expression for non-geometric fluxes in terms of the internal spinors of the compactification.
Deformation of N=2 quiver gauge theories by adjoint masses leads to fixed manifolds of N=1 superconformal field theories. We elaborate on the role of the complex three-form flux in the IIB duals to these fixed point theories, primarily using field theory techniques. We study the moduli space at a fixed point and find that it is either the two (complex) dimensional ALE space or three-dimensional generalized conifold, depending on the type of three-form flux that is present. We describe the exactly marginal operators that parameterize the fixed manifolds and find the operators which preserve the…
We consider Type IIB orientifold models on Calabi-Yau spaces with three-form G-flux turned on. These fluxes freeze some of the complex structure moduli and the complex dilaton via an F-term scalar potential. By introducing pairs of D9-anti-D9 branes with abelian magnetic fluxes it is possible to freeze also some of the Kaehler moduli via a D-term potential. Moreover, such magnetic fluxes in general lead to chiral fermions, which make them interesting for string model-building. These issues are demonstrated in a simple toy model based on a Z_2 x Z_2' orbifold.
Starting from a higher Courant bracket associated to exceptional generalized geometry, we provide a systematic derivation of all types of fluxes and their Bianchi identities for four-dimensional compactifications of M-theory. We show that these fluxes may be understood as generalized Wess-Zumino terms in certain topological threebrane sigma-models of AKSZ-type, which relates them to the higher structure of a Lie algebroid up to homotopy. This includes geometric compactifications of M-theory with G-flux and on twisted tori, and also its compactifications with non-geometric Q- and R-fluxes in sp…
We perform dimensional reductions of type IIA and type IIB double field theory in the flux formulation on Calabi-Yau three-folds and on $K3\times T^2$. In addition to geometric and non-geometric three-index fluxes and Ramond-Ramond fluxes, we include generalized dilaton fluxes. We relate our results to the scalar potentials of corresponding four-dimensional gauged supergravity theories, and we verify the expected behavior under mirror symmetry. For Calabi-Yau three-folds we extend this analysis to the full bosonic action including kinetic terms.
We report on Domain Wall solution of Calabi-Yau compactifications with general fluxes and their application to the study of mirror symmetry in generalized backgrounds. We address, in particular, to the issue of magnetic NSNS fluxes. We show that the Domain Wall gradient flow equations can be interpreted as a set of generalized Hitchin's flow equations of a manifold with SU(3)x SU(3) structure fibered along the direction transverse to the Domain wall.
We discuss the structure of the soft supersymmetry breaking terms in a MSSM like model, which can be derived from D7-branes with chiral matter fields from 2-form f-fluxes and supersymmetry breaking from 3-form G-fluxes.
We survey physical models which capture the main concepts of double field theory on para-Hermitian manifolds. We show that the geometric theory of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian dynamical systems is an instance of para-Kahler geometry which extends to a natural example of a Born geometry. The corresponding phase space geometry belongs to the family of natural almost para-Kahler structures which we construct explicitly as deformations of the canonical para-Kahler structure by non-linear connections. We extend this framework to a class of non-Lagrangian dynamical systems which naturally encodes the …
We study a deformation of a $2$-graded Poisson algebra where the functions of the phase space variables are complemented by linear functions of parity odd velocities. The deformation is carried by a $2$-form $B$-field and a bivector $Π$, that we consider as gauge fields of the geometric and non-geometric fluxes $H$, $f$, $Q$ and $R$ arising in the context of string theory compactification. The technique used to deform the Poisson brackets is widely known for the point particle interacting with a $U(1)$ gauge field, but not in the case of non-abelian or higher spin fields. The construction is c…
We develop a group-theoretical approach to the formulation of generalized abelian gauge theories, such as those appearing in string theory and M-theory. We explore several applications of this approach. First, we show that there is an uncertainty relation which obstructs simultaneous measurement of electric and magnetic flux when torsion fluxes are included. Next we show how to define the Hilbert space of a self-dual field. The Hilbert space is Z2-graded and we show that, in general, self-dual theories (including the RR fields of string theory) have fermionic sectors. We indicate how rational …
We develop systematic string techniques to study brane world effective actions for models with magnetized (or equivalently intersecting) D-branes. In particular, we derive the dependence on all NS-NS moduli of the kinetic terms of the chiral matter in a generic non-supersymmetric brane configurations with non-commuting open string fluxes. Near a N=1 supersymmetric point the effective action is consistent with a Fayet-Iliopoulos supersymmetry breaking and the normalization of the scalar kinetic terms is nothing else than the Kahler metric. We also discuss, from a stringy perspective, D and F te…
We focus on D-brane models in presence of closed string background fluxes. These fluxes modify the effective interactions on Dirichlet and Euclidean branes, in particular inducing fermionic masses. We show how they can create new non-perturbative superpotential terms in presence of gauge and exotic instantons in SQCD-like models.
We derive the full N=2 supergravity Lagrangian which contains a symplectic invariant scalar potential in terms of electric and magnetic charges. As shown in reference [1], the appearance of magnetic charges is allowed only if tensor multiplets are present and a suitable Fayet-Iliopoulos term is included in the fermion transformation laws. We generalize the procedure in the quoted reference by adding further a Fayet-Iliopoulos term which allows the introduction of electric charges in such a way that the potential and the equations of motion of the theory are symplectic invariant. The theory is …
We study analytical properties of the generalized $λ$-deformation, which modifies string theories while preserving integrability, and construct the explicit backgrounds corresponding to AdS_p x S^p, including the Ramond-Ramond fluxes. For an arbitrary coset, we find the general form of the R-matrix underlying the deformation, and prove that the dilaton is not modified by the deformation, while the frames are multiplied by a constant matrix. Our explicit solutions describe families of integrable string theories depending on several continuous parameters.
We investigate compactifications of type II and M-theory down to $AdS_5$ with generic fluxes that preserve eight supercharges, in the framework of Exceptional Generalized Geometry. The geometric data and gauge fields on the internal manifold are encoded in a pair of generalized structures corresponding to the vector and hyper-multiplets of the reduced five-dimensional supergravity. Supersymmetry translates into integrability conditions for these structures, generalizing, in the case of type IIB, the Sasaki-Einstein conditions. We show that the ten and eleven-dimensional type IIB and M-theory K…
We propose a universal geometric formulation of gauged supergravity in terms of a twisted doubled torus. We focus on string theory (M-theory) reductions with generalized Scherk-Schwarz twists residing in the O(n,n) (E_{7(7)}) duality group. The set of doubled geometric fluxes, associated with the duality twists and identified naturally with the embedding tensor of gauged supergravity, captures all known fluxes, i.e. physical form fluxes, ordinary geometric fluxes, as well as their non-geometric counterparts. Furthermore, we propose a prescription for obtaining the effective geometry embedded i…
We discuss finite-size corrections to the spiky strings in $AdS$ space which is dual to the long $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM operators of the form Tr($Δ_+ ^{J_1}ϕ_1Δ_+ ^{J_2}ϕ_2...Δ_+ ^{J_n}ϕ_n$). We express the finite-size dispersion relation in terms of Lambert $\mathbf{W}$-function. We further establish the finite-size scaling relation between energy and angular momentum of the spiky string in presence of mixed fluxes in terms of $\mathbf{W}$-function. We comment on the solution in pure NS-NS background as well.
We show that the supersymmetry transformations for type II string theories on six-manifolds can be written as differential conditions on a pair of pure spinors, the exponentiated Kahler form exp(iJ) and the holomorphic form Omega. The equations are explicitly symmetric under exchange of the two pure spinors and a choice of even or odd-rank RR field. This is mirror symmetry for manifolds with torsion. Moreover, RR fluxes affect only one of the two equations: exp(iJ) is closed under the action of the twisted exterior derivative in IIA theory, and similarly Omega is closed in IIB. Modulo a differ…
It has been shown that classical non-minimally coupled scalar fields can violate all of the standard energy conditions in general relativity. Violations of the null and averaged null energy conditions obtainable with such fields have been suggested as possible exotic matter candidates required for the maintenance of traversable wormholes. In this paper, we explore the possibility that if such fields exist, they might be used to produce large negative energy fluxes and macroscopic violations of the generalized second law (GSL) of thermodynamics. We find that it appears to be very easy to produc…
We investigate a simple class of type II string compactifications which incorporate nongeometric "fluxes" in addition to "geometric flux" and the usual H-field and R-R fluxes. These compactifications are nongeometric analogues of the twisted torus. We develop T-duality rules for NS-NS geometric and nongeometric fluxes, which we use to construct a superpotential for the dimensionally reduced four-dimensional theory. The resulting structure is invariant under T-duality, so that the distribution of vacua in the IIA and IIB theories is identical when nongeometric fluxes are included. This gives a …
We continue the study of supersymmetric type IIB pp wave solutions by Maldacena and Maoz (hep-th/0207284), who showed Ramond-Ramond five-forms can induce potential terms in the light cone string actions which are nonlinear sigma models with special holonomy target spaces. We show nonvanishing Ramond-Ramond three-forms provide extra potential terms involving Killing vectors in the string action and identify the supersymmetry requirements. In particular, in solutions with (1,1) worldsheet supersymmetry, the Killing vectors are required to be self-dual in Spin(7).
We provide a proof of the equivalence of N=1 dynamics obtained by deforming N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories by addition of certain superpotential terms, with that of type IIB superstring on Calabi-Yau threefold geometries with fluxes. In particular we show that minimization of the superpotential involving gaugino fields is equivalent to finding loci where Seiberg-Witten curve has certain factorization property. Moreover, by considering the limit of turning off of the superpotential we obtain the full low energy dynamics of N=2 gauge systems from Calabi-Yau geometries with fluxes.
We study the scalar potential in supersymmetric (orientifolded) Calabi Yau compactifications of Type IIB theory. We present a new mechanism to stabilize all closed string moduli at leading order in α^{'} by introducing consistently fluxes. As usual we consider the dilaton and the complex structure moduli stabilized by turning on three-form fluxes that couple to the F-part of the scalar potential. Kahler moduli get fixed by the combined action of the flux-induced scalar masses with magnetic fields of the open string sector, and Fayet-Illiopoulos terms. For supersymmetric three-form fluxes the m…
We consider compactifications of type II string theory in which a d-dimensional torus is fibered over a base X. In string theory, the transition functions of this fibration need not be simply diffeomorphisms of T^d but can involve elements of the T-duality group Spin(d,d,Z). We precisely define the notion of a T-fold with NSNS flux. Given such a T-fold, we define the Z_2-graded cohomology theory describing the unquantized RR field strengths and discuss how the data of a T-fold can be interpreted in terms of generalized NSNS fluxes and the twisted differential of Shelton-Taylor-Wecht.
Motivated by the recent proposal for the S-matrix in $AdS_3\times S^3$ with mixed three form fluxes, we study classical folded string spinning in $AdS_3$ with both Ramond and Neveu-Schwarz three form fluxes. We solve the equations of motion of these strings and obtain their dispersion relation to the leading order in the Neveu-Schwarz flux $b$. We show that dispersion relation for the spinning strings with large spin ${\cal S}$ acquires a term given by $-\frac{\sqrtλ}{2π} b^2\log^2 {\cal S}$ in addition to the usual $\frac{\sqrtλ}π \log {\cal S}$ term where $\sqrtλ$ is proportional to the squa…
We consider N=1 compactifications of the type-IIA theory on the T6/(Z2xZ2) orbifold and O6 orientifold, in the presence of D6-branes and general NSNS, RR and Scherk-Schwarz geometrical fluxes. Introducing a suitable dual formulation of the theory, we derive and solve the Bianchi identities, and show how certain combinations of fluxes can relax the constraints on D6-brane configurations coming from the cancellation of RR tadpoles. We then compute, via generalized dimensional reduction, the N=1, D=4 effective potential for the seven main moduli, and comment on the relation with truncated N=4 gau…
We discuss the moduli stabilization arising in the presence of gauge fluxes, R-symmetry twists and non-perturbative effects in the context of 6-dimensional supergravity models. We show how the presence of D-terms, due to the gauge fluxes, is compatible with gaugino condensation, and that the two effects, combined with the R-symmetry twist, do stabilize all the Kaehler moduli present in the model, in the spirit of KKLT. We also calculate the flux-induced one-loop correction to the scalar potential coming from charged hypermultiplets, and find that it does not destabilize the minimum.
We find the conditions on compactifications of type IIA to four-dimensional Minkowski space to preserve N=2 supersymmetry in the language of Exceptional Generalized Geometry (EGG) and Generalized Complex Geometry (GCG). In EGG, off-shell N =2 supersymmetry requires the existence of a pair of SU(2)_R singlet and triplet algebraic structures on the exceptional generalized tangent space that encode all the scalars (NS-NS and R-R) in vector and hypermultiplets respectively. We show that on shell N=2 requires, except for a single component, these structures to be closed under a derivative twisted b…
We study stabilization of hypermoduli with emphasis on the effects of generalized fluxes. We find a class of no-scale vacua described by ISD conditions even in the presence of geometric flux. The associated flux attractor equations can be integrated by a generating function with the property that the hypermoduli are determined by a simple extremization principle. We work out several orbifold examples where all vector moduli and many hypermoduli are stabilized, with VEVs given explicitly in terms of fluxes.
Type IIA toroidal orientifolds offer a promising toolkit for model builders, especially when one includes not only the usual fluxes from NS-NS and R-R field strengths, but also fluxes that are T-dual to the NS-NS three-form flux. These new ingredients are known as metric fluxes and non-geometric fluxes, and can help stabilize moduli or can lead to other new features. In this paper we study two approaches to these constructions, by effective field theory or by toroidal fibers twisted over a toroidal base. Each approach leads us to important observations, in particular the presence of D-terms in…
We derive new ansaetze for the 4-form field strength of D=11 supergravity corresponding to uplifts of four-dimensional maximal gauged supergravity. In particular, the ansaetze directly yield the components of the 4-form field strength in terms of the scalars and vectors of the four-dimensional maximal gauged supergravity---in this way they provide an explicit uplift of all four-dimensional consistent truncations of D=11 supergravity. The new ansaetze provide a substantially simpler method for uplifting d=4 flows compared to the previously available method using the 3-form and 6-form potential …
We study N=1 domain wall solutions of type IIB supergravity compactified on a Calabi-Yau manifold in the presence of RR and NS electric and magnetic fluxes. We show that the dynamics of the scalar fields along the direction transverse to the domain wall is described by gradient flow equations controlled by a superpotential W. We then provide a geometrical interpretation of the gradient flow equations in terms of the mirror symmetric compactification of type IIA. They correspond to a set of generalized Hitchin flow equations of a manifold with SU(3)xSU(3)structure which is fibered over the dire…
In this paper we consider a class of exactly solvable closed string flux backgrounds that exhibit non-commutativity in the closed string coordinates. They are realized in terms of freely-acting asymmetric Z_N-orbifolds, which are themselves close relatives of twisted torus fibrations with elliptic Z_N-monodromy (elliptic T-folds). We explicitly construct the modular invariant partition function of the models and derive the non-commutative algebra in the string coordinates, which is exact to all orders in α'. Finally, we relate these asymmetric orbifold spaces to inherently stringy Scherk-Schwa…
A Double Field Theory (DFT) description of gauge symmetry enhancing-breaking in the heterotic string is presented. The construction, based on previous results for the bosonic string, relies on the extension of the tangent frame of DFT. The fluxes of a Scherk-Schwarz like generalized toroidal compactification are moduli dependent and become identified with the structure constants of the enhanced group at fixed "self-dual" points in moduli space. Slight displacements from such points provide the breaking of the symmetry, gauge bosons acquiring masses proportional to fluxes. The inclusion of ferm…
Looking for string vacua with fixed moduli, we study compactifications of type IIA string theory on Calabi-Yau fourfolds in the presence of generic Ramond-Ramond fields. We explicitly derive the (super)potential induced by Ramond-Ramond fluxes performing a Kaluza-Klein reduction of the ten-dimensional effective action. This can be conveniently achieved in a formulation of the massive type IIA supergravity where all Ramond-Ramond fields appear in a democratic way. The result agrees with the general formula for the superpotential written in terms of calibrations. We further notice that for gener…
In this paper we consider heterotic compactifications on K3 x T2 as well as type II compactifications on K3-fibred Calabi-Yau spaces with certain fluxes for the gauge and RR field strengths F and H turned on. By providing an identification of corresponding fluxes we show that the well-known N=2 heterotic/type II string-string duality still holds for a subset of all possible fluxes, namely those which arise from six-dimensional gauge fields with internal magnetic flux on the common two-sphere P1, which is the base space of the type II K3-fibration. On the other hand, F- and H-fluxes without P1-…
We compute the supersymmetry-breaking three-form fluxes generated by the addition of anti-D3 branes at the tip of a Klebanov-Strassler throat. These fluxes give rise to nontrivial terms in the superpotential when the throat is embedded in a flux compactification. We describe these terms both from a ten-dimensional and from a four-dimensional perspective and show that, upon including Kähler-moduli stabilization, the resulting potential admits de Sitter minima. Our proposed de Sitter construction does not require additional supersymmetry-breaking (0,3) fluxes, and hence is more minimalist than t…
