In this paper we consider a class of exactly solvable closed string flux backgrounds that exhibit non-commutativity in the closed string coordinates. They are realized in terms of freely-acting asymmetric Z_N-orbifolds, which are themselves close relatives of twisted torus fibrations with elliptic Z_N-monodromy (elliptic T-folds). We explicitly construct the modular invariant partition function of the models and derive the non-commutative algebra in the string coordinates, which is exact to all orders in α'. Finally, we relate these asymmetric orbifold spaces to inherently stringy Scherk-Schwarz backgrounds and non-geometric fluxes.
We investigate the orbifold limits of string theory compactifications with geometric and non-geometric fluxes. Exploiting the connection between internal fluxes and structure constants of the gaugings in the reduced supergravity theory, we can identify the types of fluxes arising in certain classes of freely-acting symmetric and asymmetric orbifolds. We give a general procedure for deriving the gauge algebra of the effective gauged supergravity using the exact CFT description at the orbifold point. We find that the asymmetry is, in general, related to the presence of non-geometric Q- and R- fl…
We investigate compactifications with duality twists and their relation to orbifolds and compactifications with fluxes. Inequivalent compactifications are classified by conjugacy classes of the U-duality group and result in gauged supergravities in lower dimensions with nontrivial Scherk-Schwarz potentials on the moduli space. For certain twists, this mechanism is equivalent to introducing internal fluxes but is more general and can be used to stabilize some of the moduli. We show that the potential has stable minima with zero energy precisely at the fixed points of the twist group. In string …
We present direct arguments for non-commutativity of spheres in the AdS/CFT correspondence. The discussion is based on results for the $S_N$ orbifold SCFT. Concentrating on three point correlations (at finite $N$) we exhibit a comparison with correlations on a non-commutative sphere. In this manner an essential signature of non-commutativity is identified giving further support for the original proposal of hep-th/9902059.
We examine the quantization of fluxes for the warped Stiefel cone and Stenzel geometries and their orbifolds, and distinguish the roles of three related notions of charge: Page, Maxwell, and brane. The orbifolds admit discrete torsion, and we describe the associated quantum numbers which are consistent with the geometry in its large radius and small radius limits from both the type IIA and the M-theory perspectives. The discrete torsion, measured by a Page charge, is related to the number of fractional branes. We relate the shifts in the Page charges under large gauge transformations to the Ha…
We examine heterotic M-theory compactified on a Calabi-Yau manifold with an additional parallel M5 brane. The dominant non-perturbative effect stems from open membrane instantons connecting the M5 with the boundaries. We derive the four-dimensional low-energy supergravity potential for this situation including subleading contributions as it turns out that the leading term vanishes after minimisation. At the minimum of the potential the M5 gets stabilised at the middle of the orbifold interval while the vacuum energy is shown to be manifestly positive. Moreover, induced by the non-trivial runni…
As the effective field theory of the superstring theory, ten-dimensional ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory is induced. We consider the ten-dimensional space-time ${\cal M}_{10}$ as direct products of our four-dimensional space-time ${\cal M}_{4}$ and three two-dimensional compact spaces $X_i\ (i=1,2,3)$, i.e. ${\cal M}_{10} = {\cal M}_4 \times X_2 \times X_2 \times X_3$. In particular, we consider $X_i$ as a torus, the torus orbifold, and also the blow-up manifold of the torus orbifold with background magnetic fluxes. We discuss the modular symmetry in the magnetized torus and its …
We explore several consequences of the recently discovered intrinsic non-commutativity of the zero-mode sector of closed string theory. In particular, we illuminate the relation between T-duality and this intrinsic non-commutativity and also note that there is a simple closed string product, equivalent to the splitting-joining interaction of the pants diagram, that respects this non-commutativity and is covariant with respect to T-duality. We emphasize the central role played by the symplectic form $ω$ on the space of zero modes. Furthermore, we begin an exploration of new non-commutative stri…
We shall construct two boundary states which are corresponding to a dynamical fractional D$p$-brane in the presence of the fluxes of the Kalb-Ramond field and a $U(1)$ gauge potential, in the partially orbifold spacetime $\mathbb{R}^{1, 5}\times\mathbb{C}^{2}/\mathbb{Z}_{2}$. These states accurately describe the D$p$-brane in the twisted and untwisted sectors under the orbifold projection. We use them to compute the interaction of two parallel fractional D$p$-branes with the transverse velocities, tangential rotations and tangential linear motions. Various properties of the interaction, such a…
We discuss the origin of the choice of global structure for six dimensional $(2,0)$ theories and their compactifications in terms of their realization from IIB string theory on ALE spaces. We find that the ambiguity in the choice of global structure on the field theory side can be traced back to a subtle effect that needs to be taken into account when specifying boundary conditions at infinity in the IIB orbifold, namely the known non-commutativity of RR fluxes in spaces with torsion. As an example, we show how the classification of $\mathcal{N}=4$ theories by Aharony, Seiberg and Tachikawa ca…
We discuss the interplay between freely acting orbifold actions, discrete deformations and internal uniform magnetic fields in four-dimensional orientifold models.
In the recent years a lot of attention is focused on unconventional string compactifications. A variety of different but related frameworks was developed in order to address issues such as duality invariance, non-geometry and non-commutativity in string theory. In this contribution we review and clarify the approach that goes through matrix models. Furthermore, we discuss some connections of this framework to other related approaches.
Non-perturbative effects are studied for Type I strings on the Z_3 orbifold with Chan-Paton symmetry broken by Wilson lines. Generalizing previous analyses that have focussed on (bi)fundamentals, it is argued that (anti)symmetric representations of the resulting gauge group play a decisive role in generating an ADS-like superpotential in this and related cases. Non perturbative corrections in the closed string moduli are only allowed if properly dressed with open string fields charged under the anomalous U(1) of the orbifold. A general discussion of instanton effects in SYM and string theories…
In these proceedings, we discuss non-commutativity in closed string theory. In analogy to the open-string sector, for closed strings we first motivate a cyclic double commutator to be evaluated for backgrounds with geometric or non-geometric fluxes. A non-trivial result for such an expression indicates a non-associative structure. Second, we define a conformal field theory at linear order in background fluxes and compute correlation functions therein. From these we motivate a tri-product which captures non-commutative and non-associative effects.
The mixed component of the non-commutative parameter θ_{μM}, where μ= 0,1,2,3 and M is an extra dimensional index may violate four-dimensional CPT invariance. We calculate one and two-loop induced couplings of θ_{μ5} with the four-dimensional axial vector current and with the CPT odd dim=6 operators starting from five-dimensional Yukawa and U(1) theories. The resulting bounds from clock comparison experiments place a stringent constraint on θ_{μ5}, |θ_{μ5}|^{-1/2} > 5\times 10^{11} GeV. The orbifold projection and/or localization of fermions on a 3-brane lead to CPT-conserving physics, in whic…
We examine magnetic and electric near horizon regions of maximally supersymmetric D-brane and NS5-brane bound states and find transformations between near horizon regions with worldvolume dual magnetic and electric fluxes. These point to dual formulations of NCYM, NCOS and OD$p$ theories in the limit of weak coupling and large spatial or temporal non-commutativity length scale in terms of weakly coupled theories with fixed worldvolume dual non-commutativity based on open D-branes. We also examine the strong coupling behavior of the open D-brane theories and propose a unified web of dualities i…
We study Majorana neutrino masses induced by D-brane instanton effects in magnetized orbifold models. We classify possible cases, where neutrino masses can be induced. Three and four generations are favored in order to generate neutrino masses by D-brane instantons. Explicit mass matrices have specific features. Their diagonalizing matrices correspond to the bimaximal mixing matrix in the case with even magnetic fluxes, independently of the modulus value $τ$. On the other hand, for odd magnetic fluxes, diagonalizing matrices correspond nearly to the tri-bimaximal mixing matrix near $τ=i$, whil…
We propose new backgrounds of extra dimensions to lead to four-dimensional chiral models with three generations of matter fermions, that is $T^2/Z_N$ twisted orbifolds with magnetic fluxes. We consider gauge theory on six-dimensional space-time, which contains the $T^2/Z_N$ orbifold with magnetic flux, Scherk-Schwarz phases and Wilson line phases. We classify all the possible Scherk-Schwarz and Wilson line phases on $T^2/Z_N$ orbifolds with magnetic fluxes. The behavior of zero modes is studied. We derive the number of zero modes for each eigenvalue of the $Z_N$ twist, showing explicitly examp…
This thesis is concerned with the geometry of toroidal orbifolds and their applications in string theory. By resolving the orbifold singularities via blow-ups, one arrives at a smooth Calabi-Yau manifold. The systematic method to do so is explained in detail. Also the transition to the Orientifold quotient is explained. In the second part of this thesis, applications in string phenomenology are discussed. The applications belong to the framework of compactifications with fluxes in type IIB string theory. The first example belongs to the category of model building, flux-induced soft supersymmet…
We study chiral zero-mode wave functions on blow-up manifolds of $T^2/Z_N$ orbifolds with both bulk and localized magnetic flux backgrounds. We introduce a singular gauge transformation in order to remove $Z_N$ phases for $Z_N$ twisted boundary condition of matter fields. We compute wave functions of not only bulk zero modes but also localized modes at the orbifold singular points, which correspond to new zero modes induced by localized flux. By studying their Yukawa couplings, it turns out that only three patterns of Yukawa couplings are allowed. Our theory has a specific coupling selection r…
We analyze a class of dual pairs of heterotic and type I models based on freely-acting $\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2$ orbifolds in four dimensions. Using the adiabatic argument, it is possible to calculate non-perturbative contributions to the gauge coupling threshold corrections on the type I side by exploiting perturbative calculations on the heterotic side, without the drawbacks due to twisted moduli. The instanton effects can then be combined with closed-string fluxes to stabilize most of the moduli fields of the internal manifold, and also the dilaton, in a racetrack realization of th…
Instantons on Eguchi-Hanson spaces provide explicit examples of stable bundles on non-compact four dimensional C^2/Z_n orbifold resolutions with non-Abelian structure groups. With this at hand, we can consider compactifications of ten dimensional SO(32) supergravity (arising as the low energy limit of the heterotic string) on the resolved spaces in the presence of non-Abelian bundles. We provide explicit examples in the resolved C^2/Z_3 case, and give a complete classification of all possible effective six dimensional models where the instantons are combined with Abelian gauge fluxes in order …
We discuss the issue of the cosmological constant in non-commutative non-supersymmetric gauge theories. In particular, in orbifold field theories non-commutativity acts as a UV cut-off. We suggest that in these theories quantum corrections give rise to a vacuum energy ρ, that is controlled by the non-commutativity parameter θ, ρ~ 1/theta^2 (only a soft logarithmic dependence on the Planck scale survives). We demonstrate our claim in a two-loop computation in field theory and by certain higher loop examples. Based on general expressions from string theory, we suggest that the vacuum energy is c…
We study orbifolding by the $\mathbb{Z}_2^{\rm (per)}$ permutaion of $T^2_1 \times T^2_2$ with magnetic fluxes and its twisted orbifolds. We classify the possible three generation models which lead to non-vanishing Yukawa couplings on the magnetized $T^2_1 \times T^2_2$ and orbifolds including the $\mathbb{Z}_2^{\rm (per)}$ permutation and $\mathbb{Z}_2^{\rm (t)}$ twist. We also study the modular symmetry on such orbifold models. As an illustrating model, we examine the realization of quark masses and mixing angles.
We analyze the general class of supersymmetry preserving orbifolds of strong/weak Type IIA/heterotic dual pairs in six dimensions and below. A unified treatment is given by considering compactification to two spacetime dimensions and constructing orbifolds by subgroups of the Fischer-Greiss monster, utilizing the moonshine results of Conway and Norton. Duality requires nontrivial Ramond-Ramond fluxes on the Type IIA side which are localized at the fixed points. Further orbifolding by (-1)^{F_L} gives examples of new four dimensional N=2 Type IIA vacua which are not conformal field theory backg…
We study Kähler moduli stabilizations in semi-realistic magnetized D-brane models based on $ Z_2\times Z_2'$ toroidal orbifolds. In type IIB compactifications, 3-form fluxes can stabilize the dilaton and complex structure moduli fields, but there remain some massless closed string moduli fields, Kähler moduli. The magnetic fluxes generate Fayet-Iliopoulos terms, which can fix ratios of Kähler moduli. On top of that, we consider D-brane instanton effects to stabilize them in concrete D-brane models and investigate the brane configurations to confirm that the moduli fields can be stabilized succ…
Using an algebraic orbifold method, we present non-commutative aspects of $G_2$ structure of seven dimensional real manifolds. We first develop and solve the non commutativity parameter constraint equations defining $G_2$ manifold algebras. We show that there are eight possible solutions for this extended structure, one of which corresponds to the commutative case. Then we obtain a matrix representation solving such algebras using combinatorial arguments. An application to matrix model of M-theory is discussed.
We study the separation of AdS and Kaluza-Klein (KK) scales in type II 4d AdS orientifold vacua. We first address this problem in toroidal/orbifold type IIA vacua with metric fluxes, corresponding to compactifications in twisted tori, both from the 4d and 10d points of view. We show how the naive application of the effective 4d theory leads to results which violate the AdS distance conjecture, in a class of $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric models which have a 10d lifting to a compactification on $S^3\times S^3$. We show how using KK scales properly modified by the compact metric leads to no sepa…
We study abelian and non-abelian orbifolds of the ABJM model. We compute the precise moduli space of these models by analyzing the classical BPS equations for the theory on the cylinder, which include classical solutions of magnetic monopole operators. These determine the chiral ring of the theory, and thus they provide the complete set of order parameters determining the classical vacua of the theory. We show that the proper quantization of these semiclassical solutions gives us the topology of moduli space, including the additional quotient information due to the Chern-Simons levels. In gene…
We study D-branes and Ramond-Ramond fields on global orbifolds of Type II string theory with vanishing H-flux using methods of equivariant K-theory and K-homology. We illustrate how Bredon equivariant cohomology naturally realizes stringy orbifold cohomology. We emphasize its role as the correct cohomological tool which captures known features of the low-energy effective field theory, and which provides new consistency conditions for fractional D-branes and Ramond-Ramond fields on orbifolds. We use an equivariant Chern character from equivariant K-theory to Bredon cohomology to define new Ramo…
We give an alternative description of the Schoen manifold as the blow-up of a Z2xZ2 orbifold in which one Z2 factor acts as a roto-translation. Since for this orbifold the fixed tori are only identified in pairs but not orbifolded, four-dimensional chirality can never be obtained in heterotic string compactifications using standard techniques alone. However, chirality is recovered when its tori become magnetized. To exemplify this, we construct an E8xE8' heterotic SU(5) GUT on the Schoen manifold with Abelian gauge fluxes, which becomes an MSSM with three generations after an appropriate Wilso…
We study conditions on general fluxes of massive Type IIA supergravity that lead to four-dimensional backgrounds with N = 1 supersymmetry. We derive these conditions in the case of SU(3)- as well as SU(2)-structures. SU(3)-structures imply that the internal space is constrained to be a nearly Kähler manifold with all the turned on fluxes, and the negative cosmological constant proportional to the mass parameter, and the dilaton fixed by the quantized ratio of the three-form and four-form fluxes. We further discuss the implications of such flux vacua with added intersecting D6-branes, leading t…
We describe the construction of string theory models with semirealistic spectrum in a sector of (anti) D3-branes located at an orbifold singularity at the bottom of a highly warped throat geometry, which is a generalisation of the Klebanov-Strassler deformed conifold. These models realise the Randall-Sundrum proposal to naturally generate the Planck/electroweak hierarchy in a concrete string theory embedding, and yielding interesting chiral open string spectra. We describe examples with Standard Model gauge group (or left-right symmetric extensions) and three families of SM fermions, with corr…
A particularly rich class of integrable systems arises from the AdS/CFT duality. There, the two-dimensional quantum field theory living on the string worldsheet may be understood in terms of a non-relativistic factorized S matrix, and the energy spectrum may be derived by techniques such as the mirror thermodynamic Bethe ansatz or the quantum spectral curve. In the case of AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ without Ramond-Ramond fluxes, the worldhseet theory is a Wess-Zumino-Witten model with continous and discrete representations which, for the lowest allowed level, is dual to the symmetric product orbifold of …
We consider a class of (orbifolds of) M-theory compactifications on $S^{d} \times T^{7-d}$ with gauge fluxes yielding minimally supersymmetric STU-models in 4D. We present a group-theoretical derivation of the corresponding flux-induced superpotentials and argue that the aforementioned backgrounds provide a (globally) geometric origin for 4D theories that only look locally geometric from the perspective of twisted tori. In particular, we show that Q-flux can be used to generate compactifications on $S^{4} \times T^{3}$. We thus conclude that the effect of turning on non-geometric fluxes, at le…
We study string compactifications with sixteen supersymmetries. The moduli space for these compactifications becomes quite intricate in lower dimensions, partly because there are many different irreducible components. We focus primarily, but not exclusively, on compactifications to seven or more dimensions. These vacua can be realized in a number ways: the perturbative constructions we study include toroidal compactifications of the heterotic/type I strings, asymmetric orbifolds, and orientifolds. In addition, we describe less conventional M and F theory compactifications on smooth spaces. The…
We study holographic RG flow solutions within four-dimensional $N=4$ gauged supergravity obtained from type IIA and IIB string theories compactified on $T^6/\mathbb{Z}_2\times \mathbb{Z}_2$ orbifold with gauge, geometric and non-geometric fluxes. In type IIB non-geometric compactifications, the resulting gauged supergravity has $ISO(3)\times ISO(3)$ gauge group and admits an $N=4$ $AdS_4$ vacuum dual to an $N=4$ superconformal field theory (SCFT) in three dimensions. We study various supersymmetric RG flows from this $N=4$ SCFT to $N=4$ and $N=1$ non-conformal field theories in the IR. The flo…

The purpose of this paper is to provide the reader with a collection of results which can be found in the mathematical literature and to apply them to hyperbolic spaces that may have a role in physical theories. Specifically we apply K-theory methods for the calculation of brane charges and RR-fields on hyperbolic spaces (and orbifolds thereof). It is known that by tensoring K-groups with the rationals, K-theory can be mapped to rational cohomology by means of the Chern character isomorphisms. The Chern character allows one to relate the analytic Dirac index with a topological index, which can…
Non-geometry has been introduced when considering a new type of string backgrounds, for which stringy symmetries serve as transition functions between patches of the target space. Then, some terms in the potential of four-dimensional gauged supergravities, generated by so-called non-geometric fluxes, have been argued to find a higher-dimensional origin in these backgrounds, even if a standard compactification on those cannot be made. We present here recent results clarifying the relation between these two settings. Thanks to a field redefinition, we reformulate the NSNS Lagrangian in such a wa…
We analyze D = 4 compactifications of Type IIB theory with generic, geometric and non-geometric, dual fluxes turned on. In particular, we study N = 1 toroidal orbifold compactifications that admit an embedding of the untwisted sector into gauged N = 4, 8 supergravities. Truncations, spontaneous breaking of supersymmetry and the inclusion of sources are discussed. The algebraic identities satisfied by the supergravity gaugings are used to implement the full set of consistency constraints on the background fluxes. This allows to perform a generic study of N = 1 vacua and identify large regions o…
We study the CP-violating phase of the quark sector in the $U(8)$ flavor model on $T^2/Z_N \, (N=2,3,4,6)$ with non-vanishing magnetic fluxes, where properties of possible origins of the CP violation are investigated minutely. In this system, a non-vanishing value is mandatory in the real part of the complex modulus parameter $τ$ of the two-dimensional torus. On $T^2$ without orbifolding, underlying discrete flavor symmetries severely restrict the form of Yukawa couplings and it is very difficult to reproduce the observed pattern in the quark sector including the CP-violating phase $δ_{\rm CP}…
This thesis contains an introductory chapter on orbifolds. The following chapter explains the foundations of orientifolds. Chapters 4-7 present own research. In chapter 4 we quantize open strings with linear boundary conditions, as they show up in electro-magnetic fields. We quantize the zero-modes for toroidal compactifications, too. As an application we calculate the commutator of the coordinate fields in the case of general constant Neveu-Schwarz U(1)-field strengths. Thereby we confirm previous results on non-commutativity of open string theories in Neveu-Schwarz backgrounds. Chapter 5 rev…
Deformation of N=2 quiver gauge theories by adjoint masses leads to fixed manifolds of N=1 superconformal field theories. We elaborate on the role of the complex three-form flux in the IIB duals to these fixed point theories, primarily using field theory techniques. We study the moduli space at a fixed point and find that it is either the two (complex) dimensional ALE space or three-dimensional generalized conifold, depending on the type of three-form flux that is present. We describe the exactly marginal operators that parameterize the fixed manifolds and find the operators which preserve the…
We provide a direct world-sheet derivation of the couplings of NS-NS and R-R fluxes to various types of D-branes (including instantonic ones) by evaluating disk amplitudes among two open string vertex operators at a generic brane intersection and one closed string vertex representing the background fluxes. This world-sheet approach is in full agreement with the derivation of the flux couplings in the brane effective actions based on supergravity methods, but it is applicable also to more general brane configurations involving fields with twisted boundary conditions. As an application, we consi…
We find successful models of D-brane/anti-brane inflation within a string context. We work within the GKP-KKLT class of type IIB string vacua for which many moduli are stabilized through fluxes, as recently modified to include `realistic' orbifold sectors containing standard-model type particles. We allow all moduli to roll when searching for inflationary solutions and find that inflation is not generic inasmuch as special choices must be made for the parameters describing the vacuum. But given these choices inflation can occur for a reasonably wide range of initial conditions for the brane an…
Motivated by a possibility of solving non-supersymmetric type 0 string theory in $AdS_5 \times S^5$ background using integrability, we revisit the construction of type 0 string spectrum in some solvable examples of backgrounds with RR fluxes that are common to type IIB and type 0B theories. The presence of RR fluxes requires the use of a Green-Schwarz description for type 0 string theory. Like in flat space, the spectrum of type 0 theory can be derived from the type II theory spectrum by a $(-1)^F$ orbifolding, i.e. combining the untwisted sector where GS fermions are periodic with the twisted…
We elaborate on the construction of a prequantum 2-Hilbert space from a bundle gerbe over a 2-plectic manifold, providing the first steps in a program of higher geometric quantisation of closed strings in flux compactifications and of M5-branes in C-fields. We review in detail the construction of the 2-category of bundle gerbes, and introduce the higher geometrical structures necessary to turn their categories of sections into 2-Hilbert spaces. We work out several explicit examples of 2-Hilbert spaces in the context of closed strings and M5-branes on flat space. We also work out the prequantum…
We study the effect of RR and NSNS 3-form fluxes on the effective action of the worldvolume fields of Type IIB D7/D3-brane configurations. The D7-branes wrap 4-cycles on a local Calabi-Yau geometry. This is an extension of previous work on hep-th/0311241, where a similar analysis was applied to the case of D3-branes. Our present analysis is based on the D7- and D3-brane Dirac-Born-Infeld and Chern-Simons actions, and makes full use of the R-symmetries of the system, which allow us to compute explicitly results for the fields lying at the D3-D7 intersections. A number of interesting new propert…
We discuss type IIB orientifolds with D-branes, and NSNS and RR field strength fluxes, with D-brane sectors leading to open string spectra with non-abelian gauge symmetry and charged chiral fermions. The closed string field strengths generate a scalar potential stabilizing most moduli. Hence the models combine the advantages of leading to phenomenologically interesting (and even semirealistic) chiral open string spectra, and of stabilizing the dilaton and most geometric moduli. We describe the explicit construction of two classes of non-supersymmetric models on $\IT^6$ and orbifolds/orientifol…

We perform a systematic analysis of moduli stabilisation for weakly coupled heterotic string theory compactified on manifolds which are Calabi-Yau up to alpha' effects. We review how to fix all geometric and bundle moduli in a supersymmetric way by fractional fluxes, the requirement of a holomorphic gauge bundle, D-terms, higher order perturbative contributions to W, non-perturbative and threshold effects. We then show that alpha' corrections to K lead to new stable Minkowski (or dS) vacua where the complex structure moduli Z and the dilaton are fixed supersymmetrically, while the fixing of th…
