The main algebraic lemma (the former Theorem 1.6) has been given a more general statement and a shorter proof. This allows us to generalize the main results to cover Floer theories with integral or local coefficients. Submitted version. 13 pages
The chain complexes underlying Floer homology theories typically carry a real-valued filtration, allowing one to associate to each Floer homology class a spectral number defined as the infimum of the filtration levels of chains representing that class. These spectral numbers have been studied extensively in the case of Hamiltonian Floer homology by Oh, Schwarz, and others. We prove that the spectral number associated to any nonzero Floer homology class is always finite, and that the infimum in the definition of the spectral number is always attained. In the Hamiltonian case, this implies that what is known as the ``nondegenerate spectrality'' axiom holds on all closed symplectic manifolds. Our proofs are entirely algebraic and apply to any Floer-type theory (including Novikov homology) satisfying certain standard formal properties. The key ingredient is a theorem about the existence of best approximations of arbitrary elements of finitely generated free modules over Novikov rings by elements of prescribed submodules with respect to a certain family of non-Archimedean metrics.
In this paper we outline a program for the classification of Floer-type theories, (or defining invariants of finite type for families). We consider Khovanov complexes as a local system on the space of knots introduced by V. Vassiliev and construct the wall-crossing morphism. We extend this system to the singular locus by the cone of this morphism and introduce the definition of the local system of finite type. This program can be further generalized to the manifolds of dimension 3 and 4.
We define a version of spectral invariant in the vortex Floer theory for a $G$-Hamiltonian manifold $M$. This defines potentially new (partial) symplectic quasi-morphism and quasi-states when $M//G$ is not semi-positive. We also establish a relation between vortex Hamiltonian Floer homology and Woodward's quasimap Floer homology by constructing a closed-open string map between them. This yields applications to study non-displaceability problems of subsets in $M//G$
We consider symplectic fibrations as in Guillemin-Lerman-Sternberg, and derive a spectral sequence to compute the Floer cohomology of certain fibered Lagrangians sitting inside a compact symplectic fibration with small monotone fibers and a rational base. We show if the Floer cohomology with field coefficients of the fiber Lagrangian vanishes, then the Floer cohomology with field coefficients of the total Lagrangian also vanishes. We give an application to certain non-torus fibers of the Gelfand-Cetlin system in Flag manifolds, and show that their Floer cohomology vanishes.
We define and investigate spectral invariants for Floer homology $HF(H,U:M)$ of an open subset $U\subset M$ in $T^*M$, defined by Kasturirangan and Oh as a direct limit of Floer homologies of approximations. We define a module structure product on $HF(H,U:M)$ and prove the triangle inequality for invariants with respect to this product. We also prove the continuity of these invariants and compare them with spectral invariants for periodic orbits case in $T^*M$.
We recently defined an invariant of contact manifolds with convex boundary in Kronheimer and Mrowka's sutured monopole Floer homology theory. Here, we prove that there is an isomorphism between sutured monopole Floer homology and sutured Heegaard Floer homology which identifies our invariant with the contact class defined by Honda, Kazez and Matić in the latter theory. One consequence is that the Legendrian invariants in knot Floer homology behave functorially with respect to Lagrangian concordance. In particular, these invariants provide computable and effective obstructions to the existence …
Let $(M,ω)$ be a symplectic manifold compact or convex at infinity. Consider a closed Lagrangian submanifold $L$ such that $ω|_{π_2(M,L)}=0$ and $μ|_{π_2(M,L)}=0$, where $μ$ is the Maslov index. Given any Lagrangian submanifold $L'$, Hamiltonian isotopic to $L$, we define Lagrangian spectral invariants associated to the non zero homology classes of $L$, depending on $L$ and $L'$. We show that they naturally generalize the Hamiltonian spectral invariants introduced by Oh and Schwarz, and that they are the homological counterparts of higher order invariants, which we also introduce here, via spe…
We consider Floer homology associated to a pair of closed Lagrangian submanifolds that satisfy a monotonicty assumption. If the Lagrangians intersect cleanly we decribe two spectral sequences which help to compute their Floer homology. The spectral sequences are constructed using a Morse-Bott version of Floer homology. We give a full treatment of the theory including orientations.
Spectral invariant were introduced in Hamiltonian Floer homology by Viterbo, Oh, and Schwarz. We extend this concept to Rabinowitz Floer homology. As an application we derive new quantitative existence results for leaf-wise intersections. The importance of spectral invariants for the presented application is that spectral invariants allow us to derive existence of critical points of the Rabinowitz action functional even in degenerate situations where the functional is not Morse.
We construct partial category-valued field theories in (2+1)-dimensions using Lagrangian Floer theory in moduli spaces of central-curvature unitary connections with fixed determinant of rank r and degree d where r,d are coprime positive integers. These theories associate to a closed, connected, oriented surface the Fukaya category of the moduli space, and to a connected bordism between two surfaces a functor between the Fukaya categories. We obtain the latter by combining Cerf theory with holomorphic quilt invariants.
It is the goal of this paper to present the first steps for defining the analogue of Hamiltonian Floer theory for covariant field theory, treating time and space relativistically. While there already exist a number of competing geometric frameworks for covariant field theory generalizing symplectic geometry, none of them are readily suitable for variational techniques such as Hamiltonian Floer theory, since the corresponding action functionals are too degenerate. Instead, we show how a regularization procedure introduced by Bridges leads to a new geometric framework for which we can show that …
We study a local-to-global inequality for spectral invariants of Hamiltonians whose supports have a ``large enough" tubular neighborhood on semipositive symplectic manifolds. In particular, we present the first examples of such an inequality when the Hamiltonians are not necessarily supported in domains with contact type boundaries, or when the ambient manifold is irrational. This extends a series of previous works studying locality phenomena of spectral invariants. A main new tool is a lower bound, in the spirit of Sikorav, for the energy of Floer trajectories that cross the tubular neighborh…
Given a link in the three-sphere, Z. Szabó and the second author constructed a spectral sequence starting at the Khovanov homology of the link and converging to the Heegaard Floer homology of its branched double-cover. The aim of this paper and its sequel is to explicitly calculate this spectral sequence, using bordered Floer homology. There are two primary ingredients in this computation: an explicit calculation of filtered bimodules associated to Dehn twists and a pairing theorem for polygons. In this paper we give the first ingredient, and so obtain a combinatorial spectral sequence from Kh…
Around 1988, Floer introduced two important theories: instanton Floer homology as invariants of 3-manifolds and Lagrangian Floer homology as invariants of pairs of Lagrangians in symplectic manifolds. Soon after that, Atiyah conjectured that the two theories should be related to each other and Lagrangian Floer homology of certain Lagrangians in the moduli space of flat connections on Riemann surfaces should recover instanton Floer homology. However, the space of flat connections on a Riemann surface is singular and the first step to address this conjecture is to make sense of Lagrangian Floer …
Lagrangian Floer homology in a general case has been constructed by Fukaya, Oh, Ohta and Ono, where they construct an $\AI$-algebra or an $\AI$-bimodule from Lagrangian submanifolds, and studied the obstructions and deformation theories. But for obstructed Lagrangian submanifolds, standard Lagrangian Floer homology can not be defined. We explore several well-known cohomology theories on these $\AI$-objects and explore their properties, which are well-defined and invariant even in the obstructed cases. These are Hochschild and cyclic homology of an $\AI$-objects and Chevalley-Eilenberg or cycli…
Given a link in the three-sphere, Ozsváth and Szabó showed that there is a spectral sequence starting at the Khovanov homology of the link and converging to the Heegaard Floer homology of its branched double cover. The aim of this paper is to explicitly calculate this spectral sequence in terms of bordered Floer homology. There are two primary ingredients in this computation: an explicit calculation of bimodules associated to Dehn twists, and a general pairing theorem for polygons. The previous part (arXiv:1011.0499) focuses on computing the bimodules; this part focuses on the pairing theorem …
Ozsvath and Szabo have established an algebraic relationship, in the form of a spectral sequence, between the reduced Khovanov homology of (the mirror of) a link L in S^3 and the Heegaard Floer homology of its double-branched cover. This relationship has since been recast by the authors as a specific instance of a broader connection between Khovanov- and Heegaard Floer-type homology theories, using a version of Heegaard Floer homology for sutured manifolds developed by Juhasz. In the present work we prove the naturality of the spectral sequence under certain elementary TQFT operations, using a…
Let A be a dg algebra over F_2 and let M be a dg A-bimodule. We show that under certain technical hypotheses on A, a noncommutative analog of the Hodge-to-de Rham spectral sequence starts at the Hochschild homology of the derived tensor product of M with itself and converges to the Hochschild homology of M. We apply this result to bordered Heegaard Floer theory, giving spectral sequences associated to Heegaard Floer homology groups of certain branched and unbranched double covers.
Seidel-Smith and Hendricks used equivariant Floer cohomology to define some spectral sequences from symplectic Khovanov homology and Heegaard Floer homology. These spectral sequences give rise to Smith-type inequalities. Similar-looking spectral sequences have been defined by Lee, Bar-Natan, Ozsváth-Szabó, Lipshitz-Treumann, Szabó, Sarkar-Seed-Szabó, and others. In this paper we give another construction of equivariant Floer cohomology with respect to a finite group action and use it to prove some invariance properties of these spectral sequences; prove that some of these spectral sequences ag…
In this paper, we apply spectral invariants, constructed in [Oh5,8], to the study of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of closed symplectic manifolds $(M,ω)$. Using spectral invariants, we first construct an invariant norm called the {\it spectral norm} on the Hamiltonian diffeomorphism group and obtain several lower bounds for the spectral norm in terms of the $\e$-regularity theorem and the symplectic area of certain pseudo-holomorphic curves. We then apply spectral invariants to the study of length minimizing properties of certain Hamiltonian paths {\it among all paths}. In addition to the constr…
In this paper we first develop various enhancements of the theory of spectral invariants of Hamiltonian Floer homology and of Entovi-Polterovich theory of spectral symplectic quasi-states and quasimorphisms by incorporating \emph{bulk deformations}, i.e., deformations by ambient cycles of symplectic manifolds, of the Floer homology and quantum cohomology. Essentially the same kind of construction is independently carried out by Usher [Us4] in a slightly less general context. Then we explore various applications of these enhancements to the symplectic topology, especially new construction of sy…
We prove the existence of a spectral sequence for Lagrangian Floer homology which converges to the Floer homology of the image of a Lagrangian submanifold under multiple fibred Dehn twists. The $E_1$ term of the sequence is given by the hypercube of "resolutions" of the Dehn twists involved. The proof relies on the exact triangle for fibered Dehn twists due to Wehrheim and Woodward. As applications we obtain a spectral sequences from Khovanov homology to symplectic Khovanov homology. Also when a 3-manifold $M$ is given by gluing two handlebodies by a surface diffeomorphism $ϕ$, we obtain a spe…
We define an integer graded symplectic Floer cohomology and a Fintushel-Stern type spectral sequence which are new invariants for monotone Lagrangian sub-manifolds and exact isotopes. The Z-graded symplectic Floer cohomology is an integral lifting of the usual Z_Sigma(L)-graded Floer-Oh cohomology. We prove the Kunneth formula for the spectral sequence and an ring structure on it. The ring structure on the Z_Sigma(L)-graded Floer cohomology is induced from the ring structure of the cohomology of the Lagrangian sub-manifold via the spectral sequence. Using the Z-graded symplectic Floer cohomolo…
We investigate the question of whether the spectral metric on the orbit space of a fiber in the disk cotangent bundle of a closed manifold, under the action of the compactly supported Hamiltonian diffeomorphism group, is bounded. We utilize wrapped Floer cohomology to define the spectral invariant of an admissible Lagrangian submanifold within a Weinstein domain. We show that the pseudo-metric derived from this spectral invariant is a valid $Ham$-invariant metric. Furthermore, we establish that the spectral metric on the orbit space of an admissible Lagrangian is bounded if and only if the wra…
Inspired by Segal-Stolz-Teichner project for geometric construction of elliptic (tmf) cohomology, and ideas of Floer theory and of Hopkins-Lurie on extended TFT's, we geometrically construct some $Ring$-valued representable cofunctors on the homotopy category of topological spaces. Using a classical computation in Gromov-Witten theory due to Seidel we show that for one version of these cofunctors $π_{2}$ of the representing space is non trivial, provided a certain categorical extension of Kontsevich conjecture holds for the symplectic manifold $ \mathbb{CP} ^{n}$, for some some $n \geq 1$. Thi…
We construct "barcodes" for the chain complexes over Novikov rings that arise in Novikov's Morse theory for closed one-forms and in Floer theory on not-necessarily-monotone symplectic manifolds. In the case of classical Morse theory these coincide with the barcodes familiar from persistent homology. Our barcodes completely characterize the filtered chain homotopy type of the chain complex; in particular they subsume in a natural way previous filtered Floer-theoretic invariants such as boundary depth and torsion exponents, and also reflect information about spectral invariants. We moreover prov…
To a link L in the 3-sphere, we associate a spectral sequence whose E^2 page is the reduced Khovanov homology of L and which converges to a version of the monopole Floer homology of the branched double cover. The pages E^k for k > 1 depend only on the mutation equivalence class of L. We define a mod 2 grading on the spectral sequence which interpolates between the delta-grading on Khovanov homology and the mod 2 grading on Floer homology. We also derive a new formula for link signature that is well-adapted to Khovanov homology. More generally, we construct new bigraded invariants of a framed l…
Ozsvath and Szabo show that there is a spectral sequence whose E^2 term is the reduced Khovanov homology of L, and which converges to the Heegaard Floer homology of the (orientation reversed) branched double cover of S^3 along L. We prove that the E^k term of this spectral sequence is an invariant of the link L for all k >= 2. If L is a transverse link in the standard tight contact structure on S^3, then we show that Plamenevskaya's transverse invariant psi(L) gives rise to a transverse invariant, psi^k(L), in the E^k term for each k >= 2. We use this fact to compute each term in the spectral …
We prove that the rank of the cohomology of a closed symplectic manifold with coefficients in a field of characteristic $p$ is smaller than the number of periodic orbits of any non-degenerate Hamiltonian flow. Following Floer, the proof relies on constructing a homology group associated to each such flow, and comparing it with the homology of the ambient symplectic manifold. The proof does not proceed by constructing a version of Floer's complex with characteristic $p$ coefficients, but uses instead the canonical (stable) complex orientations of moduli spaces of Floer trajectories to construct…
The author previously defined the spectral invariants, denoted by $ρ(H;a)$, of a Hamiltonian function $H$ as the mini-max value of the action functional $Å_H$ over the Novikov Floer cycles in the Floer homology class dual to the quantum cohomology class $a$. The spectrality axiom of the invariant $ρ(H;a)$ states that the mini-max value is a critical value of the action functional $Å_H$. The main purpose of the present paper is to prove this axiom for {\it nondegenerate} Hamiltonian functions in {\it irrational} symplectic manifolds $(M,ω)$. We also prove that the spectral invariant function $ρ…
We iterate Manolescu's unoriented skein exact triangle in knot Floer homology with coefficients in the field of rational functions over $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$. The result is a spectral sequence which converges to a stabilized version of delta-graded knot Floer homology. The $(E_2,d_2)$ page of this spectral sequence is an algorithmically computable chain complex expressed in terms of spanning trees, and we show that there are no higher differentials. This gives the first combinatorial spanning tree model for knot Floer homology.
Let f be a polynomial over the complex numbers with an isolated singularity at 0. We show that the multiplicity and the log canonical threshold of f at 0 are invariants of the link of f viewed as a contact submanifold of the sphere. This is done by first constructing a spectral sequence converging to the fixed point Floer cohomology of any iterate of the Milnor monodromy map whose E^1 page is explicitly described in terms of a log resolution of f. This spectral sequence is a generalization of a formula by A'Campo. By looking at this spectral sequence, we get a purely Floer theoretic descriptio…
In joint work with Yang Huang, we defined a canonical absolute grading on Heegaard Floer homology by homotopy classes of oriented 2-plane fields. A similar grading was defined on embedded contact homology by Michael Hutchings. In this paper we show that the isomorphism between these homology theories defined by Colin-Ghiggini-Honda preserves this grading.
We prove that a certain bilinear pairing (analagous to the Poincare-Lefschetz intersection pairing) between filtered sub- and quotient complexes of a Floer-type chain complex and of its "opposite complex" is always nondegenerate on homology. This implies a duality relation for the Oh-Schwarz-type spectral invariants of these complexes which (in Hamiltonian Floer theory) was established in the special case that the period map has discrete image by Entov and Polterovich. The duality relation served as a key lemma in Entov and Polterovich's construction of a Calabi quasimorphism on certain ration…
We introduce a new notion of persistence modules endowed with operators. It encapsulates the additional structure on Floer-type persistence modules coming from the intersection product with classes in the ambient (quantum) homology, along with a few other geometric situations. We provide sample applications to the $C^0$-geometry of Morse functions and to Hofer's geometry of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms, that go beyond spectral invariants and traditional persistent homology.
Let $M$ be an exact symplectic manifold equal to a symplectization near infinity and having stably trivializable tangent bundle, and $ϕ$ be an exact symplectomorphism of $M$ which, near infinity, is equal to either the identity or the symplectization of a contactomorphism $\hatϕ$ such that neither $\hatϕ$ nor $\hatϕ^2$ has fixed points. We give conditions under which Seidel and Smith's localization theorem for Lagrangian Floer cohomology implies the existence of a spectral sequence from $\mathit{HF}(ϕ^2)\otimes \mathbb Z_2((θ))$ to $\mathit{HF}(ϕ)\otimes \mathbb Z_2((θ))$.
We define partial quasi-morphisms on the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of the cotangent bundle using the spectral invariants in Lagrangian Floer homology with conormal boundary conditions, where the product compatible with the PSS isomorphism and the homological intersection product is lacking.
In principle, Floer theory can be extended to define homotopy invariants of families of equivalent objects (e.g. Hamiltonian isotopic symplectomorphisms, 3-manifolds, Legendrian knots, etc.) parametrized by a smooth manifold B. The invariant of a family consists of a filtered chain homotopy type, which gives rise to a spectral sequence whose E^2 term is the homology of B with twisted coefficients in the Floer homology of the fibers. The filtered chain homotopy type also gives rise to a "family Floer homology" to which the spectral sequence converges. For any particular version of Floer theory,…
We discuss generalizations of Ozsvath-Szabo's spectral sequence relating Khovanov homology and Heegaard Floer homology, focusing attention on an explicit relationship between natural Z (resp., 1/2 Z) gradings appearing in the two theories. These two gradings have simple representation-theoretic (resp., geometric) interpretations, which we also review.
We use Floer cohomology to prove the monotone version of a conjecture of Audin: the minimal Maslov number of a monotone Lagrangian torus in C^n is 2. Our approach is based on the study of the quantum cup product on Floer cohomology and in particular the behaviour of Oh's spectral sequence with respect to this product. As further applications we prove existence of holomorphic disks with boundaries on Lagrangians as well as new results on Lagrangian intersections.
We give a construction of Piunikhin--Salamon--Schwarz isomorphism between the Morse homology and the Floer homology generated by Hamiltonian orbits starting at the zero section and ending at the conormal bundle. We also prove that this isomorphism is natural in the sense that it commutes with the isomorphisms between the Morse homology for different choices of the Morse function and the Floer homology for different choices of the Hamiltonian. We define a product on the Floer homology and prove triangle inequality for conormal spectral invariants with respect to this product.
Lawrence Roberts, extending the work of Ozsvath-Szabo, showed how to associate to a link, L, in the complement of a fixed unknot, B, in S^3, a spectral sequence from the Khovanov homology of a link in a thickened annulus to the knot Floer homology of the preimage of B inside the double-branched cover of L. In a previous paper, we extended Ozsvath-Szabo's spectral sequence in a different direction, constructing for each knot K in S^3 and each positive integer n, a spectral sequence from Khovanov's categorification of the reduced, n-colored Jones polynomial to the sutured Floer homology of a red…
We discuss a relationship between Khovanov- and Heegaard Floer-type homology theories for braids. Explicitly, we define a filtration on the bordered Heegaard-Floer homology bimodule associated to the double-branched cover of a braid and show that its associated graded bimodule is equivalent to a similar bimodule defined by Khovanov and Seidel.
Localization of Floer homology is first introduced by Floer \cite{floer:fixed} in the context of Hamiltonian Floer homology. The author employed the notion in the Lagrangian context for the pair $(ϕ_H^1(L),L)$ of compact Lagrangian submanifolds in tame symplectic manifolds $(M,ω)$ in \cite{oh:newton,oh:imrn} for a compact Lagrangian submanifold $L$ and $C^2$-small Hamiltonian $H$. In this article, motivated by the study of topological Hamiltonian dynamics, we extend the localization process for any engulfable Hamiltonian path $ϕ_H$ whose time-one map $ϕ_H^1$ is sufficiently $C^0$-close to the …
We sketch the proof of the equivalence between the hat versions of Heegaard Floer homology and embedded contact homology. The key point is to express these two Floer homology theories in terms of an open book decomposition of the ambient manifold.
Following the proposals of Donaldson-Thomas, Haydys and Gaiotto-Moore-Witten, we give a construction of Fukaya-Seidel categories for a suitable class of Morse Landau-Ginzburg models using the complex gradient flow equation, which has the potential for generalization to some infinite dimensional examples. In the course of this construction, we give an alternative proof to Seidel's spectral sequence for Lagrangian Floer cohomology, which can be viewed as a finite dimensional model for a potential bordered monopole Floer theory. The key observation is that under a neck-stretching limit, this comp…
