We define an integer graded symplectic Floer cohomology and a Fintushel-Stern type spectral sequence which are new invariants for monotone Lagrangian sub-manifolds and exact isotopes. The Z-graded symplectic Floer cohomology is an integral lifting of the usual Z_Sigma(L)-graded Floer-Oh cohomology. We prove the Kunneth formula for the spectral sequence and an ring structure on it. The ring structure on the Z_Sigma(L)-graded Floer cohomology is induced from the ring structure of the cohomology of the Lagrangian sub-manifold via the spectral sequence. Using the Z-graded symplectic Floer cohomology, we show some intertwining relations among the Hofer energy e_H(L) of the embedded Lagrangian, the minimal symplectic action sigma(L), the minimal Maslov index Sigma(L)$ and the smallest integer k(L, phi$ of the converging spectral sequence of the Lagrangian L.
For knots in S^3, the bi-graded hat version of knot Floer homology is defined over Z; however, for a link L in S^3 with #|L|=l>1, there are 2^{l-1} bi-graded hat versions of link Floer homology defined over Z, the multi-graded hat version of link Floer homology is only defined over F_2 from holomorphic considerations, and there is a multi-graded version of link Floer homology defined over Z using grid diagrams. In this short note, we try to address this issue, by extending the F_2-valued multi-graded link Floer homology theory to 2^{l-1} Z-valued theories. A grid diagram representing a link gi…
Some aspects of the construction of SW Floer homology for manifolds with non-trivial rational homology are analyzed. In particular, the case of manifolds that are obtained as zero-surgery on a knot in a homology sphere, and for torsion spinc structures. We discuss relative invariants in the case of torsion spinc structures.
In an earlier paper (math.SG/0110169), we introduced absolute gradings on the three-manifold invariants developed in math.SG/0101206 and math.SG/0105202. Coupled with the surgery long exact sequences, we obtain a number of three- and four-dimensional applications of this absolute grading including strengthenings of the ``complexity bounds'' (from math.SG/0101206), restrictions on knots whose surgeries give rise to lens spaces, and calculations of $\HFp$ for a variety of three-manifolds. Moreover, we show how the structure of $\HFp$ constrains the exoticness of definite intersection forms for s…
We develop a method of calculation for the symplectic Floer homology of composite knots. The symplectic Floer homology of knots defined in \cite{li} naturally admits an integer graded lifting, and it formulates a filtration and induced spectral sequence. Such a spectral sequence converges to the symplectic homology of knots in \cite{li}. We show that there is another spectral sequence which converges to the $\Z$-graded symplectic Floer homology for composite knots represented by braids.
Let $E_{k}^{F}(D)$ be the spectral sequence induced by the oriented cube of resolutions on knot Floer homology. We prove that $E_{2}^{F}(D)$ is a triply graded link invariant whose graded Euler characteristic is the HOMFLY-PT polynomial and that the higher pages are link invariants. By construction, the spectral sequence converges to knot Floer homology. We show that the rank of the torsion-free part of $E_{2}^{F}(D)$ is the rank of HOMFLY-PT homology.
We iterate Manolescu's unoriented skein exact triangle in knot Floer homology with coefficients in the field of rational functions over $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$. The result is a spectral sequence which converges to a stabilized version of delta-graded knot Floer homology. The $(E_2,d_2)$ page of this spectral sequence is an algorithmically computable chain complex expressed in terms of spanning trees, and we show that there are no higher differentials. This gives the first combinatorial spanning tree model for knot Floer homology.
Bordered Floer homology associates to a parametrized oriented surface a certain differential graded algebra. We study the properties of this algebra under splittings of the surface. To the circle we associate a differential graded 2-algebra, the nilCoxeter sequential 2-algebra, and to a surface with connected boundary an algebra-module over this 2-algebra, such that a natural gluing property is satisfied. Moreover, with a view toward the structure of a potential Floer homology theory of 3-manifolds with codimension-two corners, we present a decomposition theorem for the Floer complex of a plan…
Heegaard Floer theory is a kind of topological quantum field theory, assigning graded groups to closed, connected, oriented 3-manifolds and group homomorphisms to smooth, oriented 4-dimensional cobordisms. Bordered Heegaard Floer homology is an extension of Heegaard Floer homology to 3-manifolds with boundary, with extended-TQFT-type gluing properties. In this survey, we explain the formal structure and construction of bordered Floer homology and sketch how it can be used to compute some aspects of Heegaard Floer theory.
The aim of this paper is to study the skein exact sequence for knot Floer homology. We prove precise graded version of this sequence, and also one using $\HFm$. Moreover, a complete argument is also given purely within the realm of grid diagrams.
Starting from a Heegaard splitting of a three-manifold, we use Lagrangian Floer homology to construct a three-manifold invariant, in the form of a relatively Z/8-graded abelian group. Our motivation is to have a well-defined symplectic side of the Atiyah-Floer Conjecture, for arbitrary three-manifolds. The symplectic manifold used in the construction is the extended moduli space of flat SU(2)-connections on the Heegaard surface. An open subset of this moduli space carries a symplectic form, and each of the two handlebodies in the decomposition gives rise to a Lagrangian inside the open set. In…
In an earlier paper, we introduced a collection of graded Abelian groups $\HFKa(Y,K)$ associated to knots in a three-manifold. The aim of the present paper is to investigate these groups for several specific families of knots, including the Kinoshita-Terasaka knots and their ``Conway mutants''. These results show that $\HFKa$ contains more information than the Alexander polynomial and the signature of these knots; and they also illustrate the fact that $\HFKa$ detects mutation. We also calculate $\HFKa$ for certain pretzel knots, and knots with small crossing number ($n\leq 9$). Our calculatio…
Given a diagram of a link K in S^3, we write down a Heegaard diagram for the branched-double cover Sigma(K). The generators of the associated Heegaard Floer chain complex correspond to Kauffman states of the link diagram. Using this model we make some computations of the homology \hat{HF}(Sigma(K)) as a graded group. We also conjecture the existence of a delta-grading on \hat{HF}(Sigma(K)) analogous to the delta-grading on knot Floer and Khovanov homology.
We define an elementary relatively $\mathbb Z/4$ graded Lagrangian-Floer chain complex for restricted immersions of compact 1-manifolds into the pillowcase, and apply it to the intersection diagram obtained by taking traceless $SU(2)$ character varieties of 2-tangle decompositions of knots. Calculations for torus knots are explained in terms of pictures in the punctured plane. The relation to the reduced instanton homology of knots is explored.
We construct Heegaard Floer theory for 3-manifolds with connected boundary. The theory associates to an oriented, parametrized two-manifold a differential graded algebra. For a three-manifold with parametrized boundary, the invariant comes in two different versions, one of which (type D) is a module over the algebra and the other of which (type A) is an A-infinity module. Both are well-defined up to chain homotopy equivalence. For a decomposition of a 3-manifold into two pieces, the A-infinity tensor product of the type D module of one piece and the type A module from the other piece is HF^ of…
We define and study a family of link invariants $\mathit{HFK}_{n}(L)$. Although these homology theories are defined using holomorphic disc counts, they share many properties with $sl_{n}$ homology. Using these theories, we give a framework that generalizes the conjectured spectral sequence from Khovanov homology to $δ$-graded knot Floer homology. In particular, we conjecture that for all links $L$ in $S^3$ and all $n\ge 1$, there is a spectral sequence from the $sl_{n}$ homology of $L$ to $\mathit{HFK}_{n}(L)$.
We define relative Floer theoretic invariants arising from 'quilted pseudo-holomorphic surfaces': Collections of pseudoholomorphic maps to various target spaces with 'seam conditions' in Lagrangian correspondences. As application we construct a morphism on quantum homology associated to any monotone Lagrangian correspondence.
This paper is a companion to the authors' forthcoming work extending Heegaard Floer theory from closed 3-manifolds to compact 3-manifolds with two boundary components via quilted Floer cohomology. We describe the first interesting case of this theory: the invariants of 3-manifolds bounding S^2 union T^2, regarded as modules over the Fukaya category of the punctured 2-torus. We extract a short proof of exactness of the Dehn surgery triangle in Heegaard Floer homology. We show that A-infinity structures on the graded algebra A formed by the cohomology of two basic objects in the Fukaya category …
Bordered Heegaard Floer homology is an invariant for three-manifolds with boundary. In particular, this invariant associates to a handle decomposition of a surface F a differential graded algebra, and to an arc slide between two handle decompositions, a bimodule over the two algebras. In this paper, we describe these bimodules for arc slides explicitly, and then use them to give a combinatorial description of HF^ of a closed three-manifold, as well as the bordered Floer homology of any 3-manifold with boundary.
Bordered Heegaard Floer homology is an invariant for 3-manifolds, which associates to a surface F an algebra A(F), and to a 3-manifold Y with boundary, together with an orientation-preserving diffeomorphism from F to the boundary of Y, a module over A(F). In a previous paper, we defined relative Z/2 differential gradings on the algebra A(F) and the modules over it. In this paper, we turn the relative grading into an absolute one, and show that the resulting Z/2-graded module is an invariant of the bordered 3-manifold.
We compute the effect of concordance surgery, a generalization of knot surgery defined using a self-concordance of a knot, on the Ozsváth-Szabó 4-manifold invariant. The formula involves the graded Lefschetz number of the concordance map on knot Floer homology. The proof uses the sutured Floer TQFT, and a version of sutured Floer homology perturbed by a 2-form.
Seidel and Smith introduced the graded fixed-point symplectic Khovanov cohomology group Kh_{symp,inv}(K) for a knot K inside S^{3}, as well as a spectral sequence converging to the Heegaard Floer homology-hat group for the connected sum of the double branched cover with a copy of S^{2}xS^{1}. The E^{1}-page of this spectral sequence is isomorphic to a factor of Kh_{symp,inv}(K). Seidel and Smith proved that Kh_{symp,inv} is a knot invariant. We show here that the higher pages of their spectral sequence are knot invariants also.
We write down an explicit formula for the $+$ version of the Heegaard Floer homology (as an absolutely graded vector space over an arbitrary field) of the results of Dehn surgery on a knot $K$ in $S^3$ in terms of homological data derived from $CFK^{\infty}(K)$. This allows us to prove some results about Dehn surgery on knots in $S^3$. In particular, we show that for a fixed manifold there are only finitely many alternating knots that can produce it by surgery. This is an improvement on a recent result by Lackenby and Purcell. We also derive a lower bound on the genus of knots depending on the…
Using Furuta's idea of finite dimensional approximation in Seiberg-Witten theory, we refine Seiberg-Witten Floer homology to obtain an invariant of homology 3-spheres which lives in the S^1-equivariant graded suspension category. In particular, this gives a construction of Seiberg-Witten Floer homology that avoids the delicate transversality problems in the standard approach. We also define a relative invariant of four-manifolds with boundary which generalizes the Bauer-Furuta stable homotopy invariant of closed four-manifolds.
We propose a framework for unifying the sl(N) Khovanov-Rozansky homology (for all N) with the knot Floer homology. We argue that this unification should be accomplished by a triply graded homology theory which categorifies the HOMFLY polynomial. Moreover, this theory should have an additional formal structure of a family of differentials. Roughly speaking, the triply graded theory by itself captures the large N behavior of the sl(N) homology, and differentials capture non-stable behavior for small N, including knot Floer homology. The differentials themselves should come from another variant o…
For each positive integer n, Khovanov and Rozansky constructed an invariant of links in the form of a doubly-graded cohomology theory whose Euler characteristic is the sl(n) link polynomial. We use Lagrangian Floer cohomology on some suitable affine varieties to build a similar series of link invariants, and we conjecture them to be equal to those of Khovanov and Rozansky after a collapsation of the bigrading. Our work is a generalization of that of Seidel and Smith, who treated the case n=2.
We prove that the algebra of singular cochains on a smooth manifold, equipped with the cup product, is equivalent to the A-infinity structure on the Lagrangian Floer cochain group associated to the zero section in the cotangent bundle. More generally, given a pair of smooth manifolds of the same dimension with embeddings of a submanifold B with isomorphic normal bundles, we construct a differential graded category from the singular cochains of these spaces, and prove that it is equivalent to the A-infinity category obtained by considering exact Lagrangian embeddings intersecting cleanly along …
For any negative definite plumbed 3-manifold M we construct from its plumbed graph a graded Z[U]-module. This, for rational homology spheres, conjecturally equals the Heegaard-Floer homology of Ozsvath and Szabo, but it has even more structure. If M is a complex singularity link then the normalized Euler-characteristic can be compared with the analytic invariants. The Seiberg--Witten Invariant Conjecture is discussed in the light of this new object.
Let M be a weakly monotone symplectic manifold, and H be a time-dependent Hamiltonian; we assume that the periodic orbits of the corresponding time-dependent Hamiltonian vector field are non-degenerate. We construct a refined version of the Floer chain complex associated to these data and any regular covering of M, and derive from it new lower bounds for the number of periodic orbits. We prove in particular that if the fundamental group of M is finite and solvable or simple, then the number of periodic orbits is not less than the minimal number of generators of the fundamental group. For a gen…
