We propose a framework for unifying the sl(N) Khovanov-Rozansky homology (for all N) with the knot Floer homology. We argue that this unification should be accomplished by a triply graded homology theory which categorifies the HOMFLY polynomial. Moreover, this theory should have an additional formal structure of a family of differentials. Roughly speaking, the triply graded theory by itself captures the large N behavior of the sl(N) homology, and differentials capture non-stable behavior for small N, including knot Floer homology. The differentials themselves should come from another variant of sl(N) homology, namely the deformations of it studied by Gornik, building on work of Lee.
While we do not give a mathematical definition of the triply graded theory, the rich formal structure we propose is powerful enough to make many non-trivial predictions about the existing knot homologies that can then be checked directly. We include many examples where we can exhibit a likely candidate for the triply graded theory, and these demonstrate the internal consistency of our axioms. We conclude with a detailed study of torus knots, developing a picture which gives new predictions even for the original sl(2) Khovanov homology.
An elementary introduction to Khovanov construction of superpolynomials. Despite its technical complexity, this method remains the only source of a definition of superpolynomials from the first principles and therefore is important for development and testing of alternative approaches. In this first part of the review series we concentrate on the most transparent and unambiguous part of the story: the unreduced Jones superpolynomials in the fundamental representation and consider the 2-strand braids as the main example. Already for the 5_1 knot the unreduced superpolynomial contains more items…
A second part of detailed elementary introduction into Khovanov homologies. This part is devoted to reduced Jones superpolynomials. The story is still about a hypercube of resolutions of a link diagram. Each resolution is a collection of non-intersecting cycles, and one associates a 2-dimensional vector space with each cycle. Reduced superpolynomial arises when for all cycles, containing a "marked" edge of the link diagram, the vector space is reduced to 1-dimensional. The rest remains the same. Edges of the hypercube are associated with cut-and-join operators, acting on the cycles. Superpartn…
Topological gauge theories in four dimensions which admit surface operators provide a natural framework for realizing homological knot invariants. Every such theory leads to an action of the braid group on branes on the corresponding moduli space. This action plays a key role in the construction of homological knot invariants. We illustrate the general construction with examples based on surface operators in N=2 and N=4 twisted gauge theories which lead to a categorification of the Alexander polynomial, the equivariant knot signature, and certain analogs of the Casson invariant. This paper is …
Explicit answer is given for the HOMFLY polynomial of the figure eight knot $4_1$ in arbitrary symmetric representation R=[p]. It generalizes the old answers for p=1 and 2 and the recently derived results for p=3,4, which are fully consistent with the Ooguri-Vafa conjecture. The answer can be considered as a quantization of the σ_R = σ_{[1]}^{|R|} identity for the "special" polynomials (they define the leading asymptotics of HOMFLY at q=1), and arises in a form, convenient for comparison with the representation of the Jones polynomials as sums of dilogarithm ratios. In particular, we construct…
We study singularities of algebraic curves associated with 3d N=2 theories that have at least one global flavor symmetry. Of particular interest is a class of theories T_K labeled by knots, whose partition functions package Poincare polynomials of the S^r-colored HOMFLY homologies. We derive the defining equation, called the super-A-polynomial, for algebraic curves associated with many new examples of 3d N=2 theories T_K and study its singularity structure. In particular, we catalog general types of singularities that presumably exist for all knots and propose their physical interpretation. A …
The colored HOMFLY polynomials, which describe Wilson loop averages in Chern-Simons theory, possess an especially simple representation for torus knots, which begins from quantum R-matrix and ends up with a trivially-looking split W representation familiar from character calculus applications to matrix models and Hurwitz theory. Substitution of MacDonald polynomials for characters in these formulas provides a very simple description of "superpolynomials", much simpler than the recently studied alternative which deforms relation to the WZNW theory and explicitly involves the Littlewood-Richards…
We first study superpolynomial associated to triply-graded reduced colored HOMFLY-PT homology. We propose conjectures of congruent relations and cyclotomic expansion for it. We prove conjecture of $N=1$ for torus knot case, through which we obtain the corresponding invariant $α(T(m,n))=-(m-1)(n-1)/2$. This is closely related to the Milnor conjecture. Many examples including homologically thick knots and higher representations are also tested. Based on these examples, we further propose a conjecture that invariant $α$ determined in cyclotomic expansion at $N=1$ is a lower bound for smooth 4-bal…
This is an expository paper discussing some parallels between the Khovanov and knot Floer homologies. We describe the formal similarities between the theories and give some examples which illustrate a somewhat mysterious correspondence between them.
We show, using Mellit's recent results, that Kálmán's full twist formula for the HOMFLY polynomial can be generalized to a formula for superpolynomials in the case of positive toric braids.
Given a knot, we ask how its Khovanov and Khovanov-Rozansky homologies change under the operation of introducing twists in a pair of strands. We obtain long exact sequences in homology and further algebraic structure which is then used to derive topological and computational results. Two of our applications include giving a new way to generate arbitrary numbers of knots with isomorphic homologies and finding an infinite number of mutant knot pairs with isomorphic reduced homologies.
According to the idea of Ozsváth, Stipsicz and Szabó, we define the knot invariant $Υ$ without the holomorphic theory, using constructions from grid homology. We develop a homology theory using grid diagrams, and show that $Υ$, as introduced this way, is a well-defined knot invariant. We reprove some important propositions using the new techniques, and show that $Υ$ provides a lower bound on the unknotting number.
We compute the Heegaard Floer homology of $S^3_1(K)$ (the (+1) surgery on the torus knot $T_{p,q}$) in terms of the semigroup generated by $p$ and $q$, and we find a compact formula (involving Dedekind sums) for the corresponding Ozsvath--Szabo d-invariant. We relate the result to known knot invariants of $T_{p,q}$ as the genus and the Levine--Tristram signatures. Furthermore, we emphasize the striking resemblance between Heegaard Floer homologies of (+1) and (-1) surgeries on torus knots. This relation is best seen at the level of $τ$ functions.
We exhibit an infinite family of knots with isomorphic knot Heegaard Floer homology. Each knot in this infinite family admits a nontrivial genus two mutant which shares the same total dimension in both knot Floer homology and Khovanov homology. Each knot is distinguished from its genus two mutant by both knot Floer homology and Khovanov homology as bigraded groups. Additionally, for both knot Heegaard Floer homology and Khovanov homology, the genus two mutation interchanges the groups in $δ$-gradings $k$ and $-k$.
We investigate several conjectures in geometric topology by assembling computer data obtained by studying weaving knots, a doubly infinite family $W(p,n)$ of examples of hyperbolic knots. In particular, we compute some important polynomial knot invariants, as well as knot homologies, for the subclass $W(3,n)$ of this family. We use these knot invariants to conclude that all knots $W(3,n)$ are fibered knots and provide estimates for some geometric invariants of these knots. Finally, we study the asymptotics of the ranks of their Khovanov homology groups. Our investigations provide evidence for …
We define composite DAHA-superpolynomials of torus knots, depending on pairs of Young diagrams and generalizing the composite HOMFLY-PT polynomials in the theory of the skein of the annulus. We provide various examples. Our superpolynomials extend the DAHA-Jones (refined) polynomials and satisfy all standard symmetries of the DAHA-superpolynomials of torus knots. The latter are conjecturally related to the HOMFLY-PT homology; such a connection is a challenge in the theory of the annulus. At the end, we construct two DAHA-hyperpolynomials extending the DAHA-Jones polynomials of type E and close…
We conjecture a relation between generalized quiver partition functions and generating functions for symmetrically colored HOMFLY-PT polynomials and corresponding HOMFLY-PT homology Poincaré polynomials of a knot $K$. We interpret the generalized quiver nodes as certain basic holomorphic curves with boundary on the knot conormal $L_K$ in the resolved conifold, and the adjacency matrix as measuring their boundary linking. The simplest such curves are embedded disks with boundary in the primitive homology class of $L_K$, other basic holomorphic curves consists of two parts: an embedded punctured…
In this paper we construct possible candidates for the minus versions of monopole and instanton knot Floer homologies. For a null-homologous knot $K\subset Y$ and a base point $p\in K$, we can associate the minus versions, $\underline{\rm KHM}^-(Y,K,p)$ and $\underline{\rm KHI}^-(Y,K,p)$, to the triple $(Y,K,p)$. We prove that a Seifert surface of $K$ induces a $\mathbb{Z}$-grading, and there is an $U$-map on the minus versions, which is of degree $-1$. We also prove other basic properties of them. If $K\subset Y$ is not null-homologous but represents a torsion class, then we can also construc…
Quasi-alternating links are a natural generalization of alternating links. In this paper, we show that quasi-alternating links are "homologically thin" for both Khovanov homology and knot Floer homology. In particular, their bigraded homology groups are determined by the signature of the link, together with the Euler characteristic of the respective homology (i.e. the Jones or the Alexander polynomial). The proofs use the exact triangles relating the homology of a link with the homologies of its two resolutions at a crossing.
We study the structural properties of colored Kauffman homologies of knots. Quadruple-gradings play an essential role in revealing the differential structure of colored Kauffman homology. Using the differential structure, the Kauffman homologies carrying the symmetric tensor products of the vector representation for the trefoil and the figure-eight are determined. In addition, making use of relations from representation theory, we also obtain the HOMFLY homologies colored by rectangular Young tableaux with two rows for these knots. Furthermore, the notion of super-A-polynomials is extended in …
In this paper, we show an isomorphism of homological knot invariants categorifying the Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants for $\mathfrak{sl}_n$. Over the past decade, such invariants have been constructed in a variety of different ways, using matrix factorizations, category $\mathcal{O}$, affine Grassmannians, and diagrammatic categorifications of tensor products. While the definitions of these theories are quite different, there is a key commonality between them which makes it possible to prove that they are all isomorphic: they arise from a skew Howe dual action of $\mathfrak{gl}_\ell$ for some $…
We rewrite the recently proposed differential expansion formula for HOMFLY polynomials of the knot $4_1$ in arbitrary rectangular representation $R=[r^s]$ as a sum over all Young sub-diagrams $λ$ of $R$ with extraordinary simple coefficients $D_{λ^{tr}}(r)\cdot D_λ(s)$ in front of the $Z$-factors. Somewhat miraculously, these coefficients are made from quantum dimensions of symmetric representations of the groups $SL(r)$ and $SL(s)$ and restrict summation to diagrams with no more than $s$ rows and $r$ columns. They possess a natural $β$-deformation to Macdonald dimensions and produces positive…
In this paper, we generalize the work of the second author and prove a grading shifting property, in sutured monopole and instanton Floer theories, for general balanced sutured manifolds. This result has a few consequences. First, we offer an algorithm that computes the Floer homologies of a family of sutured handle-bodies. Second, we obtain a canonical decomposition of sutured monopole and instanton Floer homologies and build polytopes for these two theories, which was initially achieved by Juhász for sutured (Heegaard) Floer homology. Third, we establish a Thurston-norm detection result for …
Kanenobu has given infinite families of knots with the same HOMFLY polynomials. We show that these knots also have the same sl(n) and HOMFLY homologies, thus giving the first example of an infinite family of knots undistinguishable by these invariants. This is a consequence of a structure theorem about the homologies of knots obtained by twisting up the ribbon of a ribbon knot with one ribbon.
It is known that knot homologies admit a physical description as spaces of open BPS states. We study operators and algebras acting on these spaces. This leads to a very rich story, which involves wall crossing phenomena, algebras of closed BPS states acting on spaces of open BPS states, and deformations of Landau-Ginzburg models. One important application to knot homologies is the existence of "colored differentials" that relate homological invariants of knots colored by different representations. Based on this structure, we formulate a list of properties of the colored HOMFLY homology that ca…
Besides offering a friendly introduction to knot homologies and quantum curves, the goal of these lectures is to review some of the concrete predictions that follow from the physical interpretation of knot homologies. In particular, this interpretation allows one to pose questions that would not have been asked otherwise, such as, "Is there a direct relation between Khovanov homology and the A-polynomial of a knot?" We will explain that the answer to this question is "yes," and introduce a certain deformation of the planar algebraic curve defined by the zero locus of the A-polynomial. This nov…
Link/knot invariants are series with integer coefficients, and it is a long-standing problem to get them positive and possessing cohomological interpretation. Constructing positive "superpolynomials" is not straightforward, especially for colored invariants. A simpler alternative is a multi-parametric generalization of the character expansion, which leads to colored "hyperpolynomials". The third construction involves branes on resolved conifolds, which gives rise to still another family of invariants associated with composite representations. We revisit this triality issue in the simple case o…
We show that the triply graded Khovanov-Rozansky homology of knots and links over a field of positive odd characteristic $p$ descends to an invariant in the homotopy category finite-dimensional $p$-complexes. A $p$-extended differential on the triply graded homology discovered by Cautis is compatible with the $p$-DG structure. As a consequence we get a categorification of the Jones polynomial evaluated at an odd prime root of unity
Like all other knot polynomials, the superpolynomials should be defined in arbitrary representation R of the gauge group in (refined) Chern-Simons theory. However, not a single example is yet known of a superpolynomial beyond symmetric or antisymmetric representations. We consider the expansion of the superpolynomial around the special polynomial in powers of (q-1) and (t-1) and suggest a simple formula for the first-order deviation, which is presumably valid for arbitrary representation. This formula can serve as a crucial lacking test of various formulas for non-trivial superpolynomials, whi…
We introduce and compute a 2-parameter family deformation of the A-polynomial that encodes the color dependence of the superpolynomial and that, in suitable limits, reduces to various deformations of the A-polynomial studied in the literature. These special limits include the t-deformation which leads to the "refined A-polynomial" introduced in the previous work of the authors and the Q-deformation which leads, by the conjecture of Aganagic and Vafa, to the augmentation polynomial of knot contact homology. We also introduce and compute the quantum version of the super-A-polynomial, an operator…
We derive symmetries and adjunction inequalities of the knot Floer homology groups which appear to be especially interesting for homologically essential knots. Furthermore, we obtain an adjunction inequality for cobordism maps in knot Floer homologies. We demonstrate the adjunction inequalities and symmetries in explicit calculations which recover some of the main results from [1] on longitude Floer homology and also give rise to vanishing results on knot Floer homologies. Furthermore, using symmetries we prove that the knot Floer homology of a fiber distinguishes $\stwo\times\sone$ from other…
Given a contact structure on a closed, oriented three-manifold $Y$, we describe an invariant which takes values in the three-manifold's Floer homology $\HFa$. This invariant vanishes for overtwisted contact structures and is non-zero for Stein fillable ones. The construction uses of Giroux's interpretation of contact structures in terms of open book decompositions, and the knot Floer homologies introduced in math.GT/0209056.
We consider braids with repeating patterns inside arbitrary knots which provides a multi-parametric family of knots, depending on the "evolution" parameter, which controls the number of repetitions. The dependence of knot (super)polynomials on such evolution parameters is very easy to find. We apply this evolution method to study of the families of knots and links which include the cases with just two parallel and anti-parallel strands in the braid, like the ordinary twist and 2-strand torus knots/links and counter-oriented 2-strand links. When the answers were available before, they are immed…
We show that Rasmussen's invariant of knots, which is derived from Lee's variant of Khovanov homology, is equal to an analogous invariant derived from certain other filtered link homologies.
We unify two existing approaches to the tau invariants in instanton and monopole Floer theories, by identifying $τ_{\mathrm{G}}$, defined by the second author via the minus flavors $\underline{\operatorname{KHI}}^-$ and $\underline{\operatorname{KHM}}^-$ of the knot homologies, with $τ_{\mathrm{G}}^{\sharp}$, defined by Baldwin and Sivek via cobordism maps of the $3$-manifold homologies induced by knot surgeries. We exhibit several consequences, including a relationship with Heegaard Floer theory, and use our result to compute $\underline{\operatorname{KHI}}^-$ and $\underline{\operatorname{KH…
A categorification of a polynomial link invariant is an homological invariant which contains the polynomial one as its graded Euler characteristic. This field has been initiated by Khovanov categorification of the Jones polynomial. Later, P. Ozsvath and Z. Szabo gave a categorification of Alexander polynomial. Besides their increased abilities for distinguishing knots, this new invariants seem to carry many geometrical informations. On the other hand, Vassiliev works gives another way to study link invariant, by generalizing them to singular links i.e. links with a finite number of rigid trans…
We modify the construction of knot Floer homology to produce a one-parameter family of homologies for knots in the three-sphere. These invariants can be used to give homomorphisms from the smooth concordance group to the integers, giving bounds on the four-ball genus and the concordance genus of knots. We give some applications of these homomorphisms.
We conjecture the existence of four independent gradings in the colored HOMFLY homology. We describe these gradings explicitly for the rectangular colored homology of torus knots and make qualitative predictions of various interesting structures and symmetries in the colored homology of general knots. We also give a simple representation-theoretic model for the HOMFLY homology of the unknot colored by any representation. While some of these structures have a natural interpretation in the physical realization of knot homologies based on counting supersymmetric configurations (BPS states, instan…
We study the relationship between the HOMFLY and sl(N) knot homologies introduced by Khovanov and Rozansky. For each N>0, we show there is a spectral sequence which starts at the HOMFLY homology and converges to the sl(N) homology. As an application, we determine the KR-homology of knots with 9 crossings or fewer.
In 1999, Khovanov showed that a link invariant known as the Jones polynomial is the Euler characteristic of a homology theory. The knot categorification problem is to find a general construction of knot homology groups, and to explain their meaning -- what are they homologies of? Homological mirror symmetry, formulated by Kontsevich in 1994, naturally produces hosts of homological invariants. Typically though, it leads to invariants which have no particular interest outside of the problem at hand. I showed recently that there is a new family of mirror pairs of manifolds, for which homological …
We examine the relationship between the (untwisted) knot Floer cube of resolutions and HOMFLY-PT homology. By using a filtration induced by additional basepoints on the Heegaard diagram for a knot $K$, we see that the filtered complex decomposes as a direct sum of HOMFLY-PT homologies of various subdiagrams. Jaeger's composition product formula shows that the graded Euler characteristic of this direct sum is the HOMFLY-PT polynomial of $K$.
Given a crossing in a planar diagram of a link in the three-sphere, we show that the knot Floer homologies of the link and its two resolutions at that crossing are related by an exact triangle. As a consequence, we deduce that for any quasi-alternating knot, the total rank of its knot Floer homology is equal to the determinant of the knot.
We show that the knot lattice homology of a knot in an L-space is equivalent to the knot Floer homology of the same knot (viewed these invariants as filtered chain complexes over the polynomial ring Z/2Z [U]). Suppose that G is a negative definite plumbing tree which contains a vertex w such that G-w is a union of rational graphs. Using the identification of knot homologies we show that for such graphs the lattice homology HF(G)$ is isomorphic to the Heegaard Floer homology HF^-(Y_G) of the corresponding rational homology sphere Y_G.
We conjecturally extract the triply graded Khovanov-Rozansky homology of the (m, n) torus knot from the unique finite dimensional simple representation of the rational DAHA of type A, rank n - 1, and central character m/n. The conjectural differentials of Gukov, Dunfield and the third author receive an explicit algebraic expression in this picture, yielding a prescription for the doubly graded Khovanov-Rozansky homologies. We match our conjecture to previous conjectures of the first author relating knot homology to q, t-Catalan numbers, and of the last three authors relating knot homology to H…
We introduce deformations of lattice cohomology corresponding to the knot homologies found by Ozsv\' ath, Stipsicz and Szab\' o in \cite{OSS4}. By means of holomorphic triangles counting, we prove equivalence with the analytic theory for a wide class of knots. This yields combinatorial formulae for the upsilon invariant.
We continue to develop the tensor-algebra approach to knot polynomials with the goal to present the story in elementary and comprehensible form. The previously reviewed description of Khovanov cohomologies for the gauge group of rank N-1=1 was based on the cut-and-join calculus of the planar cycles, which are involved rather artificially. We substitute them by alternative and natural set of cycles, not obligatory planar. Then the whole construction is straightforwardly lifted from SL(2) to SL(N) and reproduces Khovanov-Rozansky (KR) polynomials, simultaneously for all values of N. No matrix fa…
We define a Floer-homology invariant for knots in an oriented three-manifold, closely related to the holomorphic disk Floer homologies for three-manifolds defined in an earlier paper. We set up basic properties of these invariants, including an Euler characteristic calculation, behaviour under connected sums. Then, we establish a relationship with $HF^+$ for surgeries along the knot. Applications include calculation of $HF^+$ of three-manifolds obtained by surgeries on some special knots in $S^3$, and also calculation of $HF^+$ for certain simple three-manifolds which fiber over the circle.
Given a band sum of a split two-component link along a nontrivial band, we obtain a family of knots indexed by the integers by adding any number of full twists to the band. We show that the knots in this family have the same Heegaard knot Floer homology and the same instanton knot Floer homology. In contrast, a generalization of the cosmetic crossing conjecture predicts that the knots in this family are all distinct. We verify this prediction by showing that any two knots in this family have distinct Khovanov homology. Along the way, we prove that each of the three knot homologies detects the …
For a ribbon knot, it is a folk conjecture that the rank of its knot Floer homology must be 1 modulo 8, and another folk conjecture says the same about reduced Khovanov homology. We give the first counter-examples to both of these folk conjectures, but at the same time present compelling evidence for new conjectures that either of these homologies must have rank congruent to 1 modulo 4 for any ribbon knot. We prove that each revised conjecture is equivalent to showing that taking the rank of the homology modulo 4 gives a homomorphism of the knot concordance group. We check the revised conjectu…
In an earlier work, we introduced a family of t-modified knot Floer homologies, defined by modifying the construction of knot Floer homology HFK-minus. The resulting groups were then used to define concordance homomorphisms indexed by t in [0,2]. In the present work we elaborate on the special case t=1, and call the corresponding modified knot Floer homology the unoriented knot Floer homology. Using elementary methods (based on grid diagrams and normal forms for surface cobordisms), we show that the resulting concordance homomorphism gives a lower bound for the smooth 4-dimensional crosscap nu…
We construct knot invariants categorifying the quantum knot variants for all representations of quantum groups. We show that these invariants coincide with previous invariants defined by Khovanov for sl(2) and sl(3) and by Mazorchuk-Stroppel and Sussan for sl(n). Our technique uses categorifications of the tensor product representations of Kac-Moody algebras and quantum groups, constructed a prequel to this paper. These categories are based on the pictorial approach of Khovanov and Lauda. In this paper, we show that these categories are related by functors corresponding to the braiding and (co…
