The conformal parameterisation of a minimal surface is harmonic. Therefore, a minimal surface is a critical point of both the energy functional and the area functional. In this paper, we compare the Morse index of a minimal surface as a critical point of the area functional with its Morse index as a critical point of the energy functional. The difference between these indices is at most the real dimension of Teichmuller space. This comparison allows us to obtain surprisingly good upper bounds on the index of minimal surfaces of finite total curvature in Euclidean space of any dimension. We also bound the index of a minimal surface in an arbitrary Riemannian manifold by the area and genus of the surface, and the dimension and geometry of the ambient manifold.
For 3 $\leq$ n $\leq$ 7, we prove that a bumpy closed Riemannian n-manifold contains a sequence of connected embedded closed minimal surfaces with unbounded area.
In this paper, we study closed embedded minimal hypersurfaces in a Riemannian $(n+1)$-manifold ($2\le n\le 6$) that minimize area among such hypersurfaces. We show they exist and arise either by minimization techniques or by min-max methods: they have index at most $1$. We apply this to obtain a lower area bound for such minimal surfaces in some hyperbolic $3$-manifolds.
We extend to higher dimensions earlier sharp bounds for the area of two dimensional free boundary minimal surfaces contained in a geodesic ball of the round sphere. This follows work of Brendle and Fraser-Schoen in the euclidean case.
Consider a non-planar orientable minimal surface S in a slab which is possibly with genus or with more than two boundary components. We show that there exists a catenoidal waist W in the slab whose flux has the same vertical component as S such that Area(S)>= Area(W), provided the intersections of S with horizontal planes have the same orientation.
Let Σbe a k-dimensional minimal surface in the unit ball B^n which meets the unit sphere orthogonally. We show that the area of Σis bounded from below by the volume of the unit ball in R^k. This answers a question posed by R. Schoen.
Let M be a 3-manifold (possibly with boundary). We show that, for any positive integer g, there exists an open nonempty set of metrics on M for each of which there are stable compact embedded minimal surfaces of genus g with arbitrarily large area. This extends the result of Colding and Minicozzi for g=1.
This note concerns the area growth and bottom spectrum of complete stable minimal surfaces in a three-dimensional manifold with scalar curvature bounded from below. When the ambient manifold is the Euclidean space, by an elementary argument, it is shown directly from the stability inequality that the area of such minimal surfaces grows exactly as the Euclidean plane. Consequently, such minimal surfaces must be at, a well-known result due to Fisher-Colbrie and Schoen as well as do Carmo and Peng. In the case the ambient manifold is the hyperbolic space, explicit area growth estimate is also der…
We prove that the area of each nonflat genus zero free boundary minimal surface embedded in the unit $3$-ball is less than the area of its radial projection to $\mathbb{S}^2$. The inequality is asymptotically sharp, and we prove any sequence of surfaces saturating it converges weakly to $\mathbb{S}^2$, as currents and as varifolds.
A well-known conjecture of Yau states that the area of one of Clifford minimal hypersurfaces $S^k\big{(}\sqrt{\frac{k}{n}}\, \big{)}\times S^{n-k}\big{(}\sqrt{\frac{n-k}{n}}\, \big{)}$ gives the lowest value of area among all non-totally geodesic compact minimal hypersurfaces in the unit sphere $S^{n+1}(1)$. The present paper shows that Yau conjecture is true for minimal rotational hypersurfaces, more precisely, the area $|M^n|$ of compact minimal rotational hypersurface $M^n$ is either equal to $|S^n(1)|$, or equal to $|S^1(\sqrt{\frac{1}{n}})\times S^{n-1}(\sqrt{\frac{n-1}{n}})|$, or greater…
We consider properly immersed finite topology minimal surfaces S in complete finite volume hyperbolic 3-manifolds N, and in M x S(1), where M is a complete hyperbolic surface of finite area. We prove S has finite total curvature equal to 2πtimes the Euler characteristic of S, and we describe the geometry of the ends of S.
A correspondence is established between a class of minimal immersed surfaces of $\mathbb{S}^3(2)$ and area-minimizing unit vector fields defined on the antipodally punctured unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^2\backslash\{N,S\}$. As a consequence, we establish a stability relation for Lawson cylinders in $\mathbb{S}^3(2)$.
We prove a sharp area estimate for minimal submanifolds that pass through a prescribed point in a geodesic ball in hyperbolic space, in any dimension and codimension. In certain cases, we also prove the corresponding estimate in the sphere. Our estimates are analogous to those of Brendle and Hung in the Euclidean setting.
In hyperbolic space $H^n$ we set a geodesic ball of radius $ρ$. Consider a $k$ dimensional minimal submanifold passing through the origin of the geodesic ball with boundary lies on the boundary of that geodesic ball. We prove that its area is no less than the totally geodesic $k$ dimensional submanifold passing through the origin in that geodesic ball. This is a partial generalization of the corresponding problem in $R^n$.
In this paper we show that every area minimizing cone C^{n-1} in R^n can be approximated by entirely smooth area minimizing hypersurfaces. This extensively uses hyperbolic unfoldings of such hypersurfaces and the resulting potential theory for the Jacobi field operator. Applications include the splitting theorem in scalar curvature geometry saying that any (n-1)-dim. homology class of a compact manifold M^n with positive scalar curvature can be represented by a smooth (!) compact hypersurface that admits a positive scalar curvature metric.
Let $α$ be a polygonal Jordan curve in $\bfR^3$. We show that if $α$ satisfies certain conditions, then the least-area Douglas-Radó disk in $\bfR^3$ with boundary $α$ is unique and is a smooth graph. As our conditions on $α$ are not included amongst previously known conditions for embeddedness, we are enlarging the set of Jordan curves in $\bfR^3$ which are known to be spanned by an embedded least-area disk. As an application, we consider the conjugate surface construction method for minimal surfaces. With our result we can apply this method to a wider range of complete catenoid-ended minimal …
Consider a sequence of minimal varieties M_i in a Riemannian manifold N such that the boundary measures are uniformly bounded on compact sets. Let Z be the set of points at which the areas of the M_i blow up. We prove that Z behaves in some ways like a minimal variety without boundary: in particular, it satisfies the same maximum and barrier principles that a smooth minimal submanifold satisfies. For suitable open subsets W of N, this allows one to show that if the areas of the M_i are uniformly bounded on compact subsets of W, then the areas are in fact uniformly bounded on all compact subset…
The stability and the index of complete one-sided minimal surfaces of certain three-dimensional Riemannian manifolds with positive scalar curvature are studied.
We prove that the area of a free boundary minimal surface $Σ^2 \subset B^n$, where $B^n$ is a geodesic ball contained in a round hemisphere $\mathbb{S}^n_+$, is at least as big as that of a geodesic disk with the same radius as $B^n$; equality is attained only if $Σ$ coincides with such a disk. More generally, we prove analogous results for a class of conformally euclidean ambient spaces. This follows work of Brendle and Fraser-Schoen in the euclidean setting.
In this paper, we prove that for any closed 4-dimensional Riemannian manifold $M$ with trivial first homology group, if the Ricci curvature $|Ric|\leq3$, the diameter $diam(M)\leq D$ and the volume $vol(M)>v>0$, then the area of a smallest 2-dimensional stationary integral varifold in $M$ is bounded by F(v,D), for some function F that only depends on v and D. Our bound for the area is based on the estimation of the first homological filling function of $M$.
E. Calabi and J. Cao showed that a closed geodesic of least length in a two-sphere with nonnegative curvature is always simple. Using min-max theory, we prove that for some higher dimensions, this result holds without assumptions on the curvature. More precisely, in a closed $(n+1)$-manifold with $2 \leq n \leq 6$, a least area closed minimal hypersurface exists and any such hypersurface is embedded. As an application, we give a short proof of the fact that if a closed three-manifold $M$ has scalar curvature at least $6$ and is not isometric to the round three-sphere, then $M$ contains an embe…
Inspired by work of Ejiri-Micallef on closed minimal surfaces, we compare the energy index and the area index of a free-boundary minimal surface of a Riemannian manifold with boundary, and show that the area index is controlled from above by the area and the topology of the surface. Combining these results with work of Fraser-Li, we conclude that the area index of a free-boundary minimal surface in a convex domain of Euclidean three-space, is bounded from above by a linear function of its genus and its number of boundary components. We also prove index bounds for submanifolds of higher dimensi…
Let $M$ be a complete Riemannian $3$-manifold with sectional curvatures between $0$ and $1$. A minimal $2$-sphere immersed in $M$ has area at least $4π$. If an embedded minimal sphere has area $4π$, then $M$ is isometric to the unit $3$-sphere or to a quotient of the product of the unit $2$-sphere with $\mathbb{R}$, with the product metric. We also obtain a rigidity theorem for the existence of hyperbolic cusps. Let $M$ be a complete Riemannian $3$-manifold with sectional curvatures bounded above by $-1$. Suppose there is a $2$-torus $T$ embedded in $M$ with mean curvature one. Then the mean c…
In this paper we provide a second variation formula for L-minimal Lagrangian submanifolds in a pseudo-Sasakian manifold. We apply it to the case of Lorentzian-Sasakian manifolds and relate the L-stability of L-minimal Legendrians in a Sasakian M to their L-stability in an associated Lorentzian-Sasakian structure on M.
We observe that the $k$-dimensional width of an $n$-ball in a space form is given by the area of an equatorial $k$-ball. We also investigate related lower bounds for the area of a free boundary minimal submanifold in a space form ball.
Suppose that $N$ is a smooth manifold with a smooth Riemannian metric $g_0$, and that $Γ$ is a smooth submanifold of $N$. This paper proves that for a generic (in the sense of Baire category) smooth metric $g$ conformal to $g_0$, if $F$ is any simple $g$-minimal immersion of a closed manifold into N, then $F$ is transverse to $Γ$ and $F$ is self-transverse. The theorem remains true with "transverse" and "self-transverse" replaced by "strongly transverse" and "strongly self-transverse". The theorem also holds for hypersurfaces of constant mean curvature or, more generally, of prescribed mean cu…
If $Y$ is a properly embedded minimal surface in a convex cocompact hyperbolic 3-manifold $M$ with boundary at infinity an embedded curve $γ$, then Graham and Witten showed how to define a renormalized area $\calA$ of $Y$ via Hadamard regularization. We study renormalized area as a functional on the space of all such minimal surfaces. This requires a closer examination of these moduli spaces; following White and Coskunuzer, we prove these are Banach manifolds and that the natural map taking $Y$ to $γ$ is Fredholm of index zero and proper, which leads to the existence of a $\ZZ$-valued degree t…
In this paper, we prove the existence of the free boundary minimal hypersurface of least area in compact manifolds with boundary. Such hypersurface can be viewed as the ground state of the volume spectrum introduced by Gromov. Moreover, we characterize the orientation and Morse index of them.
We decrease the $rms$ mean curvature and area of a variable surface with a fixed boundary by iterating a few times through a curvature-based variational algorithm. For a boundary with a known minimal surface, starting with a deliberately chosen non-minimal surface, we achieve up to 65 percent of the total possible decrease in area. When we apply our algorithm to a bilinear interpolant bounded by four \emph{non-coplanar} straight lines, the area decrease by the same algorithm is only 0.116179 percent of the original value. This relative stability suggests that the bilinear interpolant is alread…
We prove that the optimal way to enclose and separate four planar regions with equal area using the less possible perimeter requires all regions to be connected. Moreover, the topology of such optimal clusters is uniquely determined.
We construct complete, embedded minimal annuli asymptotic to vertical planes in the Riemannian 3-manifold PSL. The boundary of these annuli consists of 4 vertical lines at infinity. They are constructed by taking the limit of a sequence of compact minimal annuli. The compactness is obtained from an estimate of curvature which uses foliations by minimal surfaces. This estimate is independent of the index of the surface. We also prove the existence of a one-periodic family of Riemann's type examples. The difficulty of the construction comes from the lack of symmetry of the ambient space PSL.
We introduce a combinatorial argument to study closed minimal hypersurfaces of bounded area and high Morse index. Let $(M^{n+1},g)$ be a closed Riemannian manifold and $Σ\subset M$ be a closed embedded minimal hypersurface with area at most $A>0$ and with a singular set of Hausdorff dimension at most $n-7$. We show the following bounds: there is $C_A>0$ depending only on $n$, $g$, and $A$ so that $$\sum_{i=0}^n b^i(Σ) \leq C_A \big(1+index(Σ)\big) \quad \text{ if $3\leq n+1\leq 7$},$$ $$\mathcal{H}^{n-7}\big(Sing(Σ)\big) \leq C_A \big(1+index(Σ)\big)^{7/n} \quad \text{ if $n+1\geq 8$},$$ where…
We prove an inequality bounding the renormalized area of a complete minimal surface in hyperbolic space in terms of the conformal length of its ideal boundary.
We prove that a connected properly immersed minimal surface in Euclidean 3-space with infinite symmetry group whose intersection with a ball of radius R is less than 2\piR^2 is a plane, a catenoid or a Scherk singly-periodic minimal surface. In particular, we prove that the only periodic minimal desingularization of a pair of intersecting planes is Scherk's singly-periodic minimal surface.
The author proves that there is an open non empty set of metrics on any 3-manifold such that there exists a family of stably embedded minimal 2-spheres whose area is unbounded. This generalizes the work of T. Colding and W. Minicozzi who have shown an analogous result for the torus and B. Dean who showed the positive genus case.
We describe the asymptotic behavior of minimal area submanifolds in product spacetimes of an asymptotically hyperbolic space times a compact internal manifold. In particular, we find that unlike the case of a minimal area submanifold just in an asymptotically hyperbolic space, the internal part of the boundary submanifold is constrained to be itself a minimal area submanifold. For applications to holography, this tells us what are the allowed "flavor branes" that can be added to a holographic field theory. We also give a compact geometric expression for the spectrum of operator dimensions asso…
The closed string field theory minimal-area problem asks for the conformal metric of least area on a Riemann surface with the condition that all non-contractible closed curves have length at least 2π. This is an extremal length problem in conformal geometry as well as a problem in systolic geometry. We consider the analogous minimal-area problem for homology classes of curves and, with the aid of calibrations and the max flow-min cut theorem, formulate it as a local convex program. We derive an equivalent dual program involving maximization of a concave functional. These two programs give new …
By work of Uhlenbeck, the largest principal curvature of any least area fiber of a hyperbolic $3$-manifold fibering over the circle is bounded below by one. We give a short argument to show that, along certain families of fibered hyperbolic $3$-manifolds, there is a uniform lower bound for the maximum principal curvatures of a least area minimal surface which is greater than one.
We establish parabolicity and quadratic area growth for minimal surfaces-with-boundary contained in regions of R^3 which are within a sub-logarithmic factor of the exterior of a cone. Unlike previous work showing that these two properties hold for minimal surfaces-with-boundary contained between two catenoids, we do not make use of universal superharmonic functions. Instead, we use stochastic methods, which have the additional feature of giving a type of parabolicity in a more general context than Brownian motion on a minimal surface.
Let $Σ$ be a $k$-dimensional minimal submanifold in the $n$-dimensional unit ball $B^n$ which passes through a point $y \in B^n$ and satisfies $\partial Σ\subset \partial B^n$. We show that the $k$-dimensional area of $Σ$ is bounded from below by $|B^k| \, (1-|y|^2)^{\frac{k}{2}}$. This settles a question left open by the work of Alexander and Osserman in 1973.
We calculate the first and the second variation formula for the sub-Riemannian area in three dimensional pseudo-hermitian manifolds. We consider general variations that can move the singular set of a C^2 surface and non-singular variation for C_H^2 surfaces. These formulas enable us to construct a stability operator for non-singular C^2 surfaces and another one for C2 (eventually singular) surfaces. Then we can obtain a necessary condition for the stability of a non-singular surface in a pseudo-hermitian 3-manifold in term of the pseudo-hermitian torsion and the Webster scalar curvature. Final…
We prove that a strictly stable minimal $C^2_h$ intrinsic graph G is locally area-minimizing, i.e. given any $C^1_h$ graph $S$ with the same boundary, $\text{Area}(G)<\text{Area}(S)$ unless $G=S$. As a consequence we show the existence and the uniqueness of $C^\infty$ minimal graphs with prescribed small boundary datum.
We prove qualitative estimates on the total curvature of closed minimal hypersurfaces in closed Riemannian manifolds in terms of their index and area, restricting to the case where the hypersurface has dimension less than seven. In particular, we prove that if we are given a sequence of closed minimal hypersurfaces of bounded area and index, the total curvature along the sequence is quantised in terms of the total curvature of some limit surface, plus a sum of total curvatures of complete properly embedded minimal hypersurfaces in Euclidean space - all of which are finite. Thus, we obtain qual…
For a family of spherical minimal catenoids C_a in the hyperbolic 3-space, there exist two constants 0<a_c<a_l such that the following are true: (1) C_a is an unstable minimal surface with index one if a<a_c, (2) C_a is a stable minimal surface if a>=a_c, and (3) C_a is a least area minimal surface in the sense of Meeks-Yau if a>=a_l.
We obtain a unified theory of discrete minimal surfaces based on discrete holomorphic quadratic differentials via a Weierstrass representation. Our discrete holomorphic quadratic differential are invariant under Möbius transformations. They can be obtained from discrete harmonic functions in the sense of the cotangent Laplacian and Schramm's orthogonal circle patterns. We show that the corresponding discrete minimal surfaces unify the earlier notions of discrete minimal surfaces: circular minimal surfaces via the integrable systems approach and conical minimal surfaces via the curvature approa…
Let L be a Lagrangian submanifold of a pseudo- or para-Kähler manifold which is H-minimal, i.e. a critical point of the volume functional restricted to Hamiltonian variations. We derive the second variation of the volume of L with respect to Hamiltonian variations. We apply this formula to several cases. In particular we observe that a minimal Lagrangian submanifold L in a Ricci-flat pseudo- or para-Kähler manifold is H-stable, i.e. its second variation is definite and L therefore a local extremizer of the volume with respect to Hamiltonian variations. We also give a stability criterion for sp…
