We develop a framework for displaying the stable homotopy theory of the sphere, at least after localization at the second Morava K-theory K(2). At the prime 3, we write the spectrum L_{K(2)S^0 as the inverse limit of a tower of fibrations with four layers. The successive fibers are of the form E_2^hF where F is a finite subgroup of the Morava stabilizer group and E_2 is the second Morava or Lubin-Tate homology theory. We give explicit calculation of the homotopy groups of these fibers. The case n=2 at p=3 represents the edge of our current knowledge: n=1 is classical and at n=2, the prime 3 is the largest prime where the Morava stabilizer group has a p-torsion subgroup, so that the homotopy theory is not entirely algebraic.
In this note, we compute the image of the $α$-family in the homotopy of the $K(2)$-local sphere at the prime $p=2$ by locating its image in the algebraic duality spectral sequence. This is a stepping stone for the computation of the homotopy groups of the $K(2)$-local sphere at the prime $2$ using the duality spectral sequences.
We calculate the rational homotopy and the K(1)-local homotopy of the K(2)-local sphere at the prime 3 and level 2. We use this to verify the chromatic splitting conjecture in this case.
We calculate the homotopy type of the Brown-Comenetz dual $I_2$ of the K(2)-local sphere at the prime 3 and show that there is a twisting by a non-trivial element $P$ in the exotic part of the Picard group. We give a complete characterization of $P$ as well. The main technique is to give a sequence of calculations of the homotopy groups of elements of the Picard group after smashing with the Smith-Toda complex V(1).
Let $X$ be a finite CW-complex having mod $p$ cohomology isomorphic to a wedge of three spheres $\mathbb{S}^n\vee \mathbb{S}^m \vee \mathbb{S}^l,~ 1\leq n \leq m \leq l$. The aim of this paper is to determine the fixed point sets of actions of the cyclic group of prime order on $X.$ We also classify the orbit spaces of free actions of $G=\mathbb{Z}_p, p$ a prime or $G=\mathbb{S}^d,~d=1,3,$ on $X$ and derive the Borsuk-Ulam type results.
We compute the Adams-Novikov E_2-term of a spectrum Q(2) constructed by Behrens. The homotopy groups of Q(2) are closely tied to the 3-primary stable homotopy groups of spheres; in particular, they are conjectured to detect the homotopy beta family of Greek letter elements at the prime 3. Our computation leverages techniques used by Behrens to compute the rational homotopy of Q(2), and leads to a conjecture that the Adams-Novikov E_2-term for Q(2) detects the algebraic beta family in the BP-based Adams-Novikov E_2-term for the 3-local sphere.
We provide a topological duality resolution for the spectrum $E_2^{h\mathbb{S}_2^1}$, which itself can be used to build the $K(2)$-local sphere. The resolution is built from spectra of the form $E_2^{hF}$ where $E_2$ is the Morava spectrum for the formal group of a supersingular curve at the prime $2$ and $F$ is a finite subgroup of the automorphisms of that formal group. The results are in complete analogy with the resolutions of Goerss, Henn, Mahowald, and Rezk at the prime $3$, but the methods are of necessity very different. As in the prime $3$ case, the main difficulty is in identifying t…
We examine the relation between the gauge groups of $\mathrm{SU}(n)$- and $\mathrm{PU}(n)$-bundles over $S^{2i}$, with $2\leq i\leq n$, particularly when $n$ is a prime. As special cases, for $\mathrm{PU}(5)$-bundles over $S^4$, we show that there is a rational or $p$-local equivalence $\mathcal{G}_{2,k}\simeq_{(p)}\mathcal{G}_{2,l}$ for any prime $p$ if, and only if, $(120,k)=(120,l)$, while for $\mathrm{PU}(3)$-bundles over $S^6$ there is an integral equivalence $\mathcal{G}_{3,k}\simeq\mathcal{G}_{3,l}$ if, and only if, $(120,k)=(120,l)$.
We give a calculation of Picard groups of K(2)-local invertible spectra and of E(2)-local invertible spectra, both at the prime 3. The main contribution of this paper is to calculation the subgroup of invertible spectra with the same Morava module as a sphere.
The reader of doi:10.1016/j.topol.2010.08.006 might conjecture that Δ(\barΠ_n)/G is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres for any n>=3 and any subgroup G<S_n. We disprove this by showing that Δ(\barΠ_p)/C_p is not homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres for any prime number p>=5.
We study modular approximations Q(l), l = 3,5, of the K(2)-local sphere at the prime 2 that arise from l-power degree isogenies of elliptic curves. We develop Hopf algebroid level tools for working with Q(l) and record Hill, Hopkins, and Ravenel's computation of the homotopy groups of TMF_0(5). Using these tools and formulas of Mahowald and Rezk for Q(3) we determine the image of Shimomura's 2-primary divided beta-family in the Adams-Novikov spectral sequences for Q(3) and Q(5). Finally, we use low-dimensional computations of the homotopy of Q(3) and Q(5) to explore the role of these spectra a…
Let p be an odd prime. We prove that every rank three p-group acts freely and smoothly on a product of three spheres. To construct this action, we first prove a generalization of a theorem of L\" uck and Oliver on constructions of G-equivariant vector bundles. We also give some other applications of this generalization.
We give p-local homotopy decompositions of the loop spaces of compact, simply-connected symmetric spaces for quasi-regular primes. The factors are spheres, sphere bundles over spheres, and their loop spaces. As an application, upper bounds for the homotopy exponents are determined.
Let $p$ be prime. We prove that, for $n$ odd, the $p$-torsion part of $π_q(S^{n})$ has cardinality at most $p^{2^{\frac{1}{p-1}(q-n+3-2p)}}$, and hence has rank at most $2^{\frac{1}{p-1}(q-n+3-2p)}$. For $p=2$ these results also hold for $n$ even. The best bounds proven in the existing literature are $p^{2^{q-n+1}}$ and $2^{q-n+1}$ respectively, both due to Hans-Werner Henn. The main point of our result is therefore that the bound grows more slowly for larger primes. As a corollary of work of Henn, we obtain a similar result for the homotopy groups of a broader class of spaces.
We compute topological Hochschild homology mod $p$ and $v_1$ of the connective cover of the $K(1)$-local sphere spectrum for all primes $p\ge 3$. This is accomplished using a May-type spectral sequence in topological Hochschild homology constructed from a filtration of a commutative ring spectrum.
We develop a higher semiadditive version of Grothendieck-Witt theory. We then apply the theory in the case of a finite field to study the higher semiadditive structure of the $K(1)$-local sphere at the prime $2$. As a further application, we compute and clarify certain power operations in the homotopy of the $K(1)$-local sphere.
The goal of this paper is to develop some of the machinery necessary for doing $K(2)$-local computations in the stable homotopy category using duality resolutions at the prime $p=2$. The Morava stabilizer group $\mathbb{S}_2$ admits a norm whose kernel we denote by $\mathbb{S}_2^1$. The algebraic duality resolution is a finite resolution of the trivial $\mathbb{Z}_2[[\mathbb{S}_2^1]]$-module $\mathbb{Z}_2$ by modules induced from representations of finite subgroups of $\mathbb{S}_2^1$. Its construction is due to Goerss, Henn, Mahowald and Rezk. It is an analogue of their finite resolution of t…
We describe the algebraic K-theory of the $K(1)$-local sphere and the category of type 2 finite spectra in terms of K-theory of discrete rings and topological cyclic homology. We find an infinite family of 2-torsion classes in the $K_0$ of type 2 spectra at the prime 2, and explain how to construct representatives of these $K_0$ classes.
Let $\ell$ be a prime and $q = p^ν$ where $p$ is a prime different from $\ell$. We show that the $\ell$-completion of the $n$th stable homotopy group of spheres is a summand of the $\ell$-completion of the $(n, 0)$ motivic stable homotopy group of spheres over the finite field with $q$ elements $F_q$. With this, and assisted by computer calculations, we are able to explicitly compute the two-complete stable motivic stems $π_{n, 0}(F_q)^{\wedge}_2$ for $0\leq n\leq 18$. Additionally, we compute $π_{19, 0}(F_q)^{\wedge}_2$ and $π_{20, 0}(F_q)^{\wedge}_2$ when $q \equiv 1 \bmod 4$ assuming Morel'…
We establish a bridge between homotopy groups of spheres and commutator calculus in groups, and solve in this manner the "dimension problem" by providing a converse to Sjogren's theorem: every abelian group of bounded exponent can be embedded in the dimension quotient of a group. This is proven by embedding for arbitrary $s,d$ the torsion of the homotopy group $π_s(S^d)$ into a dimension quotient, via a result of Wu. In particular, this invalidates some long-standing results in the literature, since for every prime $p$, there is some $p$-torsion in $π_{2p}(S^2)$ by a result of Serre. We explai…
In this note we derive an upper bound on the number of 2-spheres in the fixed point set of a smooth and homologically trivial cyclic group action of prime order on a simply-connected 4-manifold. This improves the a priori bound which is given by one half of the Euler characteristic of the 4-manifold. The result also shows that in some cases the 4-manifold does not admit such actions of a certain order at all or that any such action has to be pseudofree.
Equivariant "Ham Sandwich" Theorems are obtained for the finite subgroups G of the unit spheres S(F) in the classical algebras F = R, C, and H. Given any n F-valued mass distributions on F^n, it is shown that there exists a G-equivariant decomposition of F^n into |G| regular convex fundamental regions which "G-equipartition" each of the n measures, as realized by the vanishing of the "G-averages" of these regions' measures. Applications for real measures follow, among them that any n signed mass distributions on R^{(p-1)n} can be equipartitioned by a single regular p-fan when p a prime number.
We calculate $π_*K(\mathbb S)[1/2]$, the homotopy groups of $K(\mathbb S)$ away from 2, in terms of the homotopy groups of $K(\mathbb Z)$, the homotopy groups of ${\mathbb C}P^\infty_{-1}$, and the homotopy groups of $\mathbb S$. This builds on the work of Waldhausen, who computed the rational homotopy groups (building on work of Quillen and Borel) and Rognes, who calculated the groups at regular primes in terms of the homotopy groups of ${\mathbb C}P^\infty_{-1}$, and the homotopy groups of $\mathbb S$.
We compute the rational homotopy groups of the $K(n)$-local sphere for all heights $n$ and all primes $p$, verifying a prediction that goes back to the pioneering work of Morava in the early 1970s. More precisely, we show that the inclusion of the Witt vectors into the Lubin-Tate ring induces a split injection on continuous stabilizer cohomology with torsion cokernel of bounded exponent, thereby proving Hopkins' chromatic splitting conjecture and the vanishing conjecture of Beaudry-Goerss-Henn rationally. The key ingredients are the equivalence between the Lubin-Tate tower and the Drinfeld tow…
