Using degree N isogenies of elliptic curves, we produce a spectrum Q(N). This spectrum is built out of spectra related to tmf. At p=3 we show that the K(2)-local sphere is built out of Q(2) and its K(2)-local Spanier-Whitehead dual. This gives a conceptual reinterpretation a resolution of Goerss, Henn, Mahowald, and Rezk.

The $α$-Family in the $K(2)$-Local Sphere at the Prime $2$

In this note, we compute the image of the $α$-family in the homotopy of the $K(2)$-local sphere at the prime $p=2$ by locating its image in the algebraic duality spectral sequence. This is a stepping stone for the computation of the homotopy groups of the $K(2)$-local sphere at the prime $2$ using the duality spectral sequences.

The beta family at the prime two and modular forms of level three

We use the orientation underlying the Hirzebruch genus of level three to map the beta family at the prime p=2 into the ring of divided congruences. This procedure, which may be thought of as the elliptic greek letter beta construction, yields the f-invariants of this family.

The Brown-Comenetz dual of the K(2)-local sphere at the prime 3

We calculate the homotopy type of the Brown-Comenetz dual $I_2$ of the K(2)-local sphere at the prime 3 and show that there is a twisting by a non-trivial element $P$ in the exotic part of the Picard group. We give a complete characterization of $P$ as well. The main technique is to give a sequence of calculations of the homotopy groups of elements of the Picard group after smashing with the Smith-Toda complex V(1).

Strictly commutative realizations of diagrams over the Steenrod algebra and topological modular forms at the prime 2

Previous work constructed a generalized truncated Brown-Peterson spectrum of chromatic height 2 at the prime 2 as an E_infinity-ring spectrum, based on the study of elliptic curves with level-3 structure. We show that the natural map forgetting this level structure induces an E_infinity-ring map from the spectrum of topological modular forms to this truncated Brown-Peterson spectrum, and that this orientation fits into a diagram of E_infinity-ring spectra lifting a classical diagram of modules over the mod-2 Steenrod algebra. Modular invariants detecting the cohomology of BF_4 at the prime 3

Attributed to J F Adams is the conjecture that, at odd primes, the mod-p cohomology ring of the classifying space of a connected compact Lie group is detected by its elementary abelian p-subgroups. In this note we rely on Toda's calculation of H^*(BF_4;F_3) in order to show that the conjecture holds in case of the exceptional Lie group F_4. To this aim we use invariant theory in order to identify parts of H^*(BF_4;F_3) with invariant subrings in the cohomology of elementary abelian 3-subgroups of F_4. These subgroups themselves are identified via the Steenrod algebra action on H^*(BF_4;F_3).

A resolution of the K(2)-local sphere at the prime 3

We develop a framework for displaying the stable homotopy theory of the sphere, at least after localization at the second Morava K-theory K(2). At the prime 3, we write the spectrum L_{K(2)S^0 as the inverse limit of a tower of fibrations with four layers. The successive fibers are of the form E_2^hF where F is a finite subgroup of the Morava stabilizer group and E_2 is the second Morava or Lubin-Tate homology theory. Congruences between modular forms given by the divided beta family in homotopy theory

We characterize the 2-line of the p-local Adams-Novikov spectral sequence in terms of modular forms satisfying a certain explicit congruence condition for primes p > 3. We give a similar characterization of the 1-line, reinterpreting some earlier work of A. Baker and G. Laures. These results are then used to deduce that, for l a prime which generates the p-adic units, the spectrum Q(l) detects the alpha and beta families in the stable stems.

Explicit modular forms from the divided beta family

We compute modular forms known to arise from the order 5 generators of the 5-local Adams-Novikov spectral sequence 2-line, generalizing and contextualizing previous computations of M. Behrens and G. Laures. We exhibit analogous computations at other primes and conjecture formulas for some of the modular forms arising in this way at arbitrary primes greater than or equal to 5.

Rings of modular forms and a splitting of $TMF_0(7)$

Among topological modular forms with level structure, $TMF_0(7)$ at the prime $3$ is the first example that had not been understood yet. We provide a splitting of $TMF_0(7)$ at the prime 3 as $TMF$-module into two shifted copies of $TMF$ and two shifted copies of $TMF_1(2)$. This gives evidence to a much more general splitting conjecture. Along the way, we develop several new results on the algebraic side. For example, we show the normality of rings of modular forms of level $n$ and introduce cubical versions of moduli stacks of elliptic curves with level structure.
