Selfdual variational calculus is further refined and used to address questions of existence of local and global solutions for various parabolic semi-linear equations, Hamiltonian systems of PDEs, as well as certain nonlinear Schrodinger evolutions. This allows for the resolution of such equations under general time boundary conditions which include the more traditional ones such as initial value problems, periodic and anti-periodic orbits, but also yield new ones such as "periodic orbits up to an isometry" for evolution equations that may not have periodic solutions. In the process, we introduce a method for perturbing selfdual functionals in order to induce coercivity and compactness, while keeping the system selfdual.
In the present paper, we precisely conduct a q-calculus method for the numerical solutions of PDEs. A nonlinear Schrodinger equation is considered. Instead of the classical discretization methods we consider subdomains according to q-calculus, and provide an approximate solution due to a specific value of the parameter q. Error estimates show that q-calculus may produce efficient numerical solutions for PDEs.
We study an abstract equation in a reflexive Banach space, depending on a real parameter $λ$. The equation is composed by homogeneous potential operators. By analyzing the Nehari sets, we prove a bifurcation result. In some particular cases we describe the full bifurcation diagram, and in general, we estimate the parameter $λ_b$ for which the problem does not have non-zero solution when $λ>λ_b$. We give many applications to partial differential equations: Kirchhoff type equations, Schrödinger equations coupled with the electromagnetic field, Chern-Simons-Schrödinger systems and a nonlinear eig…
We study the phenomenon of revivals for the linear Schrödinger and Airy equations over a finite interval, by considering several types of non-periodic boundary conditions. In contrast with the case of the linear Schrödinger equation examined recently (which we develop further), we prove that, remarkably, the Airy equation does not generally exhibit revivals even for boundary conditions very close to periodic. We also describe a new, weaker form of revival phenomena, present in the case of certain Robin-type boundary conditions for the linear Schrödinger equation. In this weak revival, the dich…
In this paper, we are mainly concerned with the physically interesting static Schrödinger-Hartree-Maxwell type equations \begin{equation*} (-Δ)^{s}u(x)=\left(\frac{1}{|x|^σ}\ast |u|^{p}\right)u^{q}(x) \,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\, \text{in} \,\,\, \mathbb{R}^{n} \end{equation*} involving higher-order or higher-order fractional Laplacians, where $n\geq1$, $0<s:=m+\fracα{2}<\frac{n}{2}$, $m\geq0$ is an integer, $0<α\leq2$, $0<σ<n$, $0<p\leq\frac{2n-σ}{n-2s}$ and $0<q\leq\frac{n+2s-σ}{n-2s}$. We first prove the super poly-harmonic properties of nonnegative classical solutions to the above PDEs, then s…
In this paper we consider an abstract class of quasi-linear para-differential equations on the circle. For each equation in the class we prove the existence of a change of coordinates which conjugates the equation to a diagonal and constant coefficient para-differential equation. In the case of Hamiltonian equations we also put the system in Poincaré-Birkhoff normal forms. We apply this transformation to quasi-linear perturbations of the Schrödinger and Beam equations, obtaining a long time existence result without requiring any symmetry on the initial data. We also provide the local in time w…
In several cases of nonlinear dispersive PDEs, the difference between the nonlinear and linear evolutions with the same initial data, i.e. the integral term in Duhamel's formula, exhibits improved regularity. This property is usually called nonlinear smoothing. We employ the method of infinite iterations of normal form reductions to obtain a very general theorem yielding existence of nonlinear smoothing for dispersive PDEs, contingent only on establishing two particular bounds. We then apply this theorem to show that the nonlinear smoothing property holds, depending on the regularity of the in…
In this paper we prove a result of almost global existence for some abstract nonlinear PDEs on flat tori and apply it to some concrete equations, namely a nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a convolution potential, a beam equation and a quantum hydrodinamical equation. We also apply it to the stability of plane waves in NLS. The main point is that the abstract result is based on a nonresonance condition much weaker than the usual ones, which rely on the celebrated Bourgain's Lemma which provides a partition of the "resonant sites" of the Laplace operator on irrational tori.
In this paper, we revisit the infinite iteration scheme of normal form reductions, introduced by the first and second authors (with Z. Guo), in constructing solutions to nonlinear dispersive PDEs. Our main goal is to present a simplified approach to this method. More precisely, we study normal form reductions in an abstract form and reduce multilinear estimates of arbitrarily high degrees to successive applications of basic trilinear estimates. As an application, we prove unconditional well-posedness of canonical nonlinear dispersive equations on the real line. In particular, we implement this…
We present a set of smooth infinite energy global solutions (without spatial symmetry) to the non-integrable, nonlinear Schrödinger equations on $\Bbb R$. These solutions are space-time quasi-periodic with two frequencies each. Previous results [B2,1], and their generalizations [W2-4], are quasi-periodic in time, but periodic in space. This paper generalizes Bourgain's semi-algebraic set method [B3] to analyze nonlinear PDEs, in the non-compact space quasi-periodic setting on $\Bbb R$.
The classical Kubo-Martin-Schwinger (KMS) condition is a fundamental property of statistical mechanics characterizing the equilibrium of infinite classical mechanical systems. It was introduced in the seventies by G. Gallavotti and E. Verboven as an alternative to the Dobrushin-Lanford-Ruelle (DLR) equation. In this article, we consider this concept in the framework of nonlinear Hamiltonian PDEs and discuss its relevance. In particular, we prove that Gibbs measures are the unique KMS equilibrium states for such systems. Our proof is based on Malliavin calculus and Gross-Sobolev spaces. The mai…
Consider a general linear Hamiltonian system $\partial_{t}u=JLu$ in a Hilbert space $X$. We assume that$\ L: X \to X^{*}$ induces a bounded and symmetric bi-linear form $\left\langle L\cdot,\cdot\right\rangle $ on $X$, which has only finitely many negative dimensions $n^{-}(L)$. There is no restriction on the anti-self-dual operator $J: X^{*} \supset D(J) \to X$. We first obtain a structural decomposition of $X$ into the direct sum of several closed subspaces so that $L$ is blockwise diagonalized and $JL$ is of upper triangular form, where the blocks are easier to handle. Based on this structu…
We show that introducing an exponential cut-off on a suitable Sobolev norm facilitates the proof of quasi-invariance of Gaussian measures with respect to Hamiltonian PDE flows and allows us to establish the exact Jacobi formula for the density. We exploit this idea in two different contexts, namely the periodic fractional Benjamin-Bona-Mahony (BBM) equation with dispersion~$γ>1$ and the periodic one dimensional quintic defocussing nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS). For the BBM equation we study the transport of the cut-off Gaussian measures on fractional Sobolev spaces, while for the NLS eq…
Reduced-order models of time-dependent partial differential equations (PDEs) where the solution is assumed as a linear combination of prescribed modes are rooted in a well-developed theory. However, more general models where the reduced solutions depend nonlinearly on time varying parameters have thus far been derived in an ad hoc manner. Here, we introduce Reduced-order Nonlinear Solutions (RONS): a unified framework for deriving reduced-order models that depend nonlinearly on a set of time-dependent parameters. The set of all possible reduced-order solutions are viewed as a manifold immersed…
We study the backstepping stabilization of higher order linear and nonlinear Schrödinger equations on a finite interval, where the boundary feedback acts from the left Dirichlet boundary condition. The plant is stabilized with a prescribed rate of decay. The construction of the backstepping kernel is based on a challenging successive approximation analysis. This contrasts with the case of second order pdes. Second, we consider the case where the full state of the system cannot be measured at all times but some partial information such as measurements of a boundary trace are available. For this…

This paper concerns the a priori generalization analysis of the Deep Ritz Method (DRM) [W. E and B. Yu, 2017], a popular neural-network-based method for solving high dimensional partial differential equations. We derive the generalization error bounds of two-layer neural networks in the framework of the DRM for solving two prototype elliptic PDEs: Poisson equation and static Schrödinger equation on the $d$-dimensional unit hypercube. Specifically, we prove that the convergence rates of generalization errors are independent of the dimension $d$, under the a priori assumption that the exact solu…
We study initial boundary value problems for linear evolution partial differential equations (PDEs) posed on a time-dependent interval $l_1(t)<x<l_2(t)$, $0<t<T$, where $l_1(t)$ and $l_2(t)$ are given, real, differentiable functions, and $T$ is an arbitrary constant. For such problems, we show how to characterise the unknown boundary values in terms of the given initial and boundary conditions. As illustrative examples we consider the heat equation and the linear Schrödinger equation. In the first case, the unknown Neumann boundary values are expressed in terms of the Dirichlet boundary values…
