This paper generalizes two previously known techniques for generating minimally coupled Einstein-scalar field solutions in 4 dimensions; the Buchdahl and Fonarev transformations. By applying this solution generation technique, minimally coupled Einstein-scalar field solutions can be generated from vacuum solutions with arbitrary cosmological constant in arbitrary dimension. The only requirement to a seed solution is that it posesses a hypersurface-orthogonal Killing vector field. The generalization that allows us to use seed solutions with arbitrary cosmological constant uncovers a new class of Einstein-scalar field solutions that has previously not been studied. We apply the new solution transformation to the (A)dS4 vacuum solution. Transforming the resulting Einstein-scalar field solution to the conformal frame, a two-parameter family of spatially finite, expanding and accelerating cosmological solutions are found that are conformally isometric to the Einstein static universe RxS^3. We study null geodesics and find that for any observer, the solution has a cosmological horizon at an angular distance of pi/2 away from the observer. We find that a subset of these solutions can be naturally interpreted as expanding cosmologies in which a scalar black hole is formed at late times. The conformally coupled scalar field satisfies the weak energy condition as long as the energy density is positive, while the strong energy condition is generally violated.
We show some characteristics of three exact solutions to the Einstein's gravity minimally coupled to a Quintessence field. Besides eternal inflation, several other interesting inflationary processes, such as transitory inflation, are attained in these solutions. Singularity is avoided in some special cases.
Bertotti-Robinson spacetimes are topologically $AdS_2 \times S^2$ and described by a conformally flat metric. Together with the Coulomb electric potential, they provide a class of static, geodetically complete Einstein-Maxwell solutions. We show here that the Bertotti-Robinson metric together with Wu-Yang magnetic pole potentials give a class of static solutions of a system of non-minimally coupled Einstein-Yang-Mills equations that may be relevant for investigating vacuum polarization effects in a first order perturbative approach to quantum fields.
We examine the compatibility of the Einstein minimally coupled self-interacting scalar field theory with the local tests of gravity. We find that apart from the trivial case of the Schwarzschild-de Sitter solution with constant scalar field the theory does not admit any other static solution, which is consistent with the solar system tests of gravity.
We study the propagation of massless scalar fields non-minimally coupled to gravity in the background of five-dimensional Einstein-power-Maxwell black holes, and using the WKB and the pseudospectral Chebyshev methods we obtain the quasinormal frequencies (QNFs), which allow us to show the existence of stable and unstable QNFs depending on the power $k$ of the nonlinear electrodynamics, the $ξ$ parameter, which controls the strength of the non-minimal coupling, and on the size of the black hole.
We show that the action of Einstein's gravity with a scalar field coupled in a generic way to spacetime curvature is invariant under a particular set of conformal transformations. These transformations relate dual theories for which the effective couplings of the theory are scaled uniformly. In the simplest case, this class of dualities reduce to the S-duality of low-energy effective action of string theory.
A non-minimal coupling of Weyl curvatures to electromagnetic fields is considered in Brans-Dicke-Maxwell theory. The gravitational field equations are formulated in a Riemannian spacetime where the spacetime torsion is constrained to zero by the method of Lagrange multipliers in the language of exterior differential forms. The significance and ramifications of non-minimal couplings to gravity are examined in a pp-wave spacetime.
We revisit the analogy between a minimally coupled scalar field in general relativity and a perfect fluid, correcting previous identifications of effective temperature and chemical potential. This provides a useful complementary picture for the first-order thermodynamics of scalar-tensor gravity, paving the way for the Einstein frame formulation (which eluded previous attempts) and raises interesting questions to further develop the analogy.
The null geodesics of the regular and rotating magnetically charged black hole in a non-minimally coupled Einstein-Yang-Mills theory surrounded by a plasma medium is studied. The effect of magnetic charge and Yang-Mills parameter on the effective potential and radius of photon orbits has investigated. We then study the shadow of a regular and rotating magnetically charged black hole along with the observables in presence of the plasma medium. The presence of plasma medium affects the apparent size of the shadow of a regular rotating black hole in comparison to vacuum case. Variation of shadow …
Using the Schwarzschild coordinate frame for a static cyclic symmetric metric in 2 + 1 Einstein gravity coupled to a electric Maxwell field and a dilaton logarithmically depending on the radial coordinate in the presence of an exponential potential the general solution of the Einstein Maxwell dilaton equations is derived and it is identified with the Chan Mann charged dilaton solution. Via a general SL(2;R) transformation, applied on the obtained charged dilaton metric, a family of stationary dilaton solutions has been generated; these solutions possess five parameters: dilaton and cosmologica…
We consider a non-minimally coupled curvature-matter gravity model (NMC) with a Weyl connection, a theory referred to as non-minimally coupled Weyl connection gravity (NMCWCG). The Weyl connection is an affine connection that is not compatible with the metric, and involves a vector field. Assuming a vacuum expectation value for the vector field and a matter Lagrangian that only contains the contributions of the vacuum energy, we show that the model admits solutions in the space-form with a reference curvature that can be fine-tuned to much smaller values than the contribution of the matter fie…
In de Sitter ambient space formalism, the linear gravity can be written in terms of a minimally coupled scalar field and a polarization tensor. In this formalism, the massless minimally coupled scalar field can be quantized on Bunch-Davies vacuum state, that preserves the de Sitter invariance, the analyticity and removes the infrared divergence. The de Sitter quantum linear gravity is then constructed on Bunch-Davies vacuum state, which is also covariant, analytic and free of any infrared divergences. We will conclude that the unique Bunch-Davies vacuum state can be used adequately to construc…
We propose a general method for solving exactly the static field equations of Einstein and Einstein-Maxwell gravity minimally coupled to a scalar field. Our method starts from an ansatz for the scalar field profile, and determines, together with the metric functions, the corresponding form of the scalar self-interaction potential. Using this method we prove a new no-hair theorem about the existence of hairy black-hole and black-brane solutions and derive broad classes of static solutions with radial symmetry of the theory, which may play an important role in applications of the AdS/CFT corresp…
Previous studies showed that, in the presence of a simple and well-motivated self-interaction scalar potential, asymptotically flat and spherical black holes can carry minimally coupled and charged scalar cloud/hair in Einstein-Maxwell gravity. We extend these studies to Einstein-Born-Infeld gravity to consider the effect of nonlinearity of the electromagnetic field. Series of spherical cloudy/hairy black hole solutions are constructed numerically. Results show that increasing the Born-Infeld coupling constant $b$ will make the domain of existence of the solution shrink or even disappear when …
We investigate first-order vacuum phase transitions in the presence of a non-minimally coupled scalar field starting with the coupling effect on the initial dynamics of phase transitions by defining an effective potential for the scalar field and then performing three dimensional numerical simulations to observe any possible distinction in gravitational wave power spectrum. Although we give a description of the model with the expanding background, in this particular paper, we exclude the scale factor contribution since we primarily focus on the immediate impact of the non-minimal coupling at i…
The issue of de Sitter invariance for a massless minimally coupled scalar field is revisited. Formally, it is possible to construct a de Sitter invariant state for this case provided that the zero mode of the field is quantized properly. Here we take the point of view that this state is physically acceptable, in the sense that physical observables can be computed and have a reasonable interpretation. In particular, we use this vacuum to derive a new result: that the squared difference between the field at two points along a geodesic observer's space-time path grows linearly with the observer's…
In this paper, we investigate holographic superconductors dual to asymptotically anti-de Sitter black holes in an Einstein-Maxwell-scalar model with a non-minimal coupling between the scalar and Maxwell fields. In the probe limit, it shows that the scalar condensate occurs below the critical temperature $T_{c}$, and decreases with the increase of the coupling constant $α$. On the other hand, the the critical temperature $T_{c}$ increases as the coupling constant $α$ grows. We also calculate the optical conductivity of the holographic superconductor, and observe that a gap forms below $T_{c}$. …
We study the back reaction effect of massless minimally coupled scalar field at finite temperatures in the background of Einstein universe. Substituting for the vacuum expectation value of the components of the energy-momentum tensor on the RHS of the Einstein equation, we deduce a relationship between the radius of the universe and its temperature. This relationship exhibit a maximum temperature, below the Planck scale, at which the system changes its behaviour drastically. The results are compared with the case of a conformally coupled field. An investigation into the values of the cosmologi…
Viewing Einstein's theory as the gauge theory of Lorentz group, we construct the most general vacuum connections which have vanishing curvature tensor and show that the vacuum space-time can be classified by the knot topology $π_3(S^3)\simeq π_3(S^2)$ of $π_3(SO(3,1))$. With this we obtain the gauge independent vacuum decomposition of Einstein's theory to the vacuum and gauge covariant physical parts. We discuss the physical implications of our result in quantum gravity.
Bose--Einstein Condensates have been recently proposed as dark matter candidates. In order to characterise the phenomenology associated to such models, we extend previous investigations by studying the most general case of a relativistic BEC on a curved background including a non-minimal coupling to curvature. In particular, we discuss the possibility of a two phase cosmological evolution: a cold dark matter-like phase at the large scales/early times and a condensed phase inside dark matter halos. During the first phase dark matter is described by a minimally coupled weakly self-interacting sc…
In previous works, we studied the isotropisation of Bianchi class A models with a minimally coupled scalar field. In this paper, we extend these results to the case of a non minimally coupled one. We first make the calculations in the Einstein frame where the scalar field is minimally coupled to the curvature but non minimally coupled to the perfect fluid. Then, we use a conformal transformation to generalise our results to a scalar field non minimally coupled to the curvature. Universe isotropisation for the Brans-Dicke and low energy string theories are studied.
In this note we examine some recently proposed solutions of the linearized vacuum Einstein equations. We show that such solutions are {\it not} symmetries of the Einstein equations, because of a crucial integrability condition.
We study integrable models in the Bianchi I metric case with scalar fields minimally and non-minimally coupled with gravity and the correspondence between their general solutions. Using the model with a minimally coupled scalar field and a constant potential as an example, we demonstrate how to obtain the general solutions of the corresponding models in the Jordan frame.
We take a step towards characterising stationary data for the vacuum Einstein equations, by finding a necessary condition on initial data for which the evolution is a solution of the vacuum equations admitting a Killing vector, which is time-like at least in some region of the Cauchy development.
We give the Lagrangian formulation of a generic non-minimally extended Einstein-Maxwell theory with an action that is linear in the curvature and quadratic in the electromagnetic field. We derive the coupled field equations by a first order variational principle using the method of Lagrange multipliers. We look for solutions describing plane-fronted Einstein-Maxwell waves with parallel rays. We give a family of exact solutions associated with a partially massless spin-2 photon and a partially massive spin-2 graviton.
In this paper we continue earlier investigations of evolutionary formulations of the Einstein vacuum constraint equations originally introduced by Rácz. Motivated by the strong evidence from these works that the resulting vacuum initial data sets are generically not asymptotically flat we analyse the asymptotics of the solutions of a modified formulation by a combination of analytical and numerical techniques. We conclude that the vacuum initial data sets generated with this new formulation are generically asymptotically flat.
We develop a correspondence between arbitrary tensors and matrices based on the use of Kronecker products and associated identities. Utilizing the rules of matrix differentiation we derive the vacuum Einstein field equations as a differential-matrix equation. This formulation may facilitate their efficient use in numerical relativistic models.
We study the greybody factors of the scalar fields in spherically symmetric Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-de Sitter black holes in higher dimensions. We derive the greybody factors analytically for both minimally and non-minimally coupled scalar fields. Moreover, we discuss the dependence of the greybody factor on various parameters including the angular momentum number, the non-minimally coupling constant, the spacetime dimension, the cosmological constant and the Gauss-Bonnet coefficient in detail. We find that the non-minimal coupling may suppress the Hawking radiation, while the Gauss-Bonnet coupl…
The slow-roll field equations for the case of non-minimally coupled scalar fields are obtained in two ways: first using the direct generalization of slow-roll conditions in the minimal coupling case to non-minimal one; and, second, conformal transforming the slow-roll field equations in the Einstein frame to the Jordan frame and then applying the generalized slow-roll conditions. We compare the difference of two methods in calculation of the spectral index, $n_s$, for a model example. The second method seems to be more precise.
In this paper we study a massless, minimally coupled scalar field in a FLRW spacetime with periods of different constant deceleration parameter. We assume the Bunch-Davies vacuum during inflation and then use a sudden matching approximation to match it onto radiation era and subsequently onto matter era. We then proceed to calculate the one-loop energy-momentum tensor from the inflationary quantum vacuum fluctuations in different eras. The energy-momentum tensor has the form of an ideal (quantum) fluid, characterized by an equation of state. When compared with the background, far away from the…
In this work a new non-minimally coupled model is presented, where a generic function $f(R)$ of the scalar curvature factors the usual Einstein-Hilbert action functional, motivated by relevant results obtained from similar models. Its cosmological dynamics are derived and the possibility of attaining a phase of accelerated expansion is assessed. To further probe the possible implications of the model, a dynamical system formulation is established, and used to assess the scenarios where $f(R)$ assumes a power-law or exponential form.
In this paper we obtain an effective metric describing a regular and rotating magnetic black hole (BH) solution with a Yang-Mills electromagnetic source in Einstein-Yang-Mills (EYM) theory using the Newman--Janis algorithm via the non-complexification radial coordinate procedure. We then study the BH shadow and the quasinormal modes (QNMs) for massless scalar and electromagnetic fields and the quasiperiodic oscillations (QPOs). To this end, we also study the embedding diagram for the rotating EYM BH. The energy conditions, shadow curvature radius, topology and the dynamical evolution of scalar…
We study the evolution of a self interacting scalar field in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory in four dimension where the scalar field couples non minimally with the Gauss-Bonnet term. Considering a polynomial coupling of the scalar field with the Gauss-Bonnet term, a self-interaction potential and an additional perfect fluid distribution alongwith the scalar field, we investigate different possibilities regarding the outcome of the collapsing scalar field. The strength of the coupling and choice of the self-interaction potential serves as the pivotal initial conditions of the models presented. Th…
The gravitational fields of vacuumless global and gauge strings have been investigated in the context of Einstein Cartan theory under the weak field assumption of the field equations. It has been shown that global string and gauge string can have only repulsive gravitational effect on a test particle.
We show that Einstein's gravity coupled to a non-minimally coupled scalar field is stable even for high values of the scalar field, when the sign of the Einstein-Hilbert action is reversed. We also discuss inflationary solutions and a possible new mechanism of reheating.
A closed explicit representation of the vacuum Einstein equations in terms of components of curvature 2-forms is given. The discussion is restricted to the case of non-vanishing cubic invariant of conformal curvature spinor. The complete set of algebraic and differential identities connecting particular equations is presented and their consistency conditions are analyzed.
We study higher-dimensional soliton and hairy black hole solutions of the Einstein equations non-minimally coupled to a scalar field. The scalar field has no self-interaction potential but a cosmological constant is included. Non-trivial solutions exist only when the cosmological constant is negative and the constant governing the coupling of the scalar field to the Ricci scalar curvature is positive. At least some of these solutions are stable when this coupling constant is not too large.
The stress-energy tensor for the non-minimally coupled scalar field is known not to satisfy the pointwise energy conditions, even on the classical level. We show, however, that local averages of the classical stress-energy tensor satisfy certain inequalities and give bounds for averages along causal geodesics. It is shown that in vacuum background spacetimes, ANEC and AWEC are satisfied. Furthermore we use our result to show that in the classical situation we have an analogue to the so called quantum interest conjecture. These results lay the foundations for averaged energy inequalities for th…
Considering the spin-coefficient version of the left-flat vacuum Einstein equations, all but one of the fifty equations can be explicitly integrated via the introduction of five spin-weight s=-2 complex potentials. The final equation is a non-linear wave equation for the last of the potentials. Solutions to this equation determine solutions for the entire system. Solutions for several special cases are obtained
By an argument similar to that of Gibbons and Stewart, but in a different coordinate system and less restrictive gauge, we show that any weakly-asymptotically-simple, analytic vacuum or electrovacuum solutions of the Einstein equations which are periodic in time are necessarily stationary.
Five-dimensional relativity as an extension of general relativity has field equations that simplify considerably given the adoption of a new gauge. The result is a scalar field governed by the Klein-Gordon equation, in an empty spacetime with a cosmological constant governed by Einstein's equations. The main application is to the properties of massive particles in a vacuum-dominated universe.
In the present work we show that the Einstein equations on $M$ without cosmological constant and with perfect fluid as source, can be obtained from the field equations for vacuum with cosmological constant on the principal fibre bundle $P(\frac{1}{I} M,U(1))$, $M$ being the space-time and $I$ the radius of the internal space $U(1)$.
A broad class of generalized Einstein's gravity can be cast into Einstein's gravity with a minimally coupled scalar field using suitable conformal rescaling of the metric. Using this conformal equivalence between the theories, we derive the equations for the background and the perturbations, and the general asymptotic solutions for the perturbations in the generalized Einstein's gravity from the simple results known in the minimally coupled scalar field. Results for the scalar and tensor perturbations can be presented in unified forms. The large scale evolutions for both modes are characterize…
General relativity admits a plethora of exact compact object solutions. The augmentation of Einstein's action with non-minimal coupling terms leads to modified theories with rich structure, which, in turn, provide non-trivial solutions with intriguing phenomenology. Thus, assessing their viability under generic fluctuations is of utmost importance for gravity theories. We consider static and spherically-symmetric solutions of a Horndeski subclass which includes a massless scalar field non-minimally coupled to the Einstein tensor. Such theory possesses second-order field equations and admits an…
We prove that analytic initial data on a light cone arising from a metric satisfying a "near-roundness" condition near the vertex lead to a solution of the vacuum Einstein equations to the future of the light-cone.
We will present a complete set of equations, in the form of an Einstein-Bianchi system, that describe the evolution of generic smooth lattices in spacetime. All 20 independent Riemann curvatures will be evolved in parallel with the leg-lengths of the lattice. We will show that the evolution equations for the curvatures forms a hyperbolic system and that the associated constraints are preserved. This work is a generalisation of our previous paper arXiv:1101.3171 on the Einstein-Bianchi system for the Schwarzschild spacetime to general 3+1 vacuum spacetimes.
We review recent results by the author, in collaboration with Erwann Delay, Olivier Lengard, and Rafe Mazzeo, on existence and properties of space-times with controlled asymptotic behavior at null infinity.
In a recent paper [1], it has been shown that negative norm states are indispensable for a fully covariant quantization of the minimally coupled scalar field in de Sitter space. Their presence, while leaving unchanged the physical content of the theory, offers an automatic and covariant renormalization of the vacuum energy divergence. This paper is a completion of our previous work. An explicit construction of the covariant two-point function of the ``massless'' minimally coupled scalar field in de Sitter space is given, which is free of any infrared divergence. The associated Schwinger commut…
In a space-time $M$ with a Killing vector field $ξ^a$ which is either everywhere timelike or everywhere spacelike, the collection of all trajectories of $ξ^a$ gives a 3-dimension space $S$. Besides the symmetry-reduced action from that of Einstein-Hilbert, an alternative action of the fields on $S$ is also proposed, which gives the same fields equations as those reduced from the vacuum Einstein equation on $M$.
We show that with a small modification, the formulation of the Einstein equations of Uggla et al, which uses tetrad variables normalised by the expansion, is a mixed symmetric hyperbolic/parabolic system. Well-posedness of the Cauchy problem follows from a standard theorem.
According to Birkhoff's theorem the only spherically symmetric solution of the vacuum Einstein field equations is the Schwarzschild solution. Inspite of imposing asymptotically flatness and staticness as initial conditions we obtain that these equations have general solutions with the Schwarzschild metric as merely a special and simplest form of them. It is possible to have perfect and smooth metrics with the same Newtonian and post-Newtonian limits of Schwarzschild by a convenient and correct selection.
A formalism (zeta-complex analysis), allowing one to construct global Einstein metrics by matching together local ones described in the papers Phys. Lett. B 513(2001)142-146; Diff. Geom. Appl. 16(2002)95-120, is developed. With this formalism the singularities of the obtained metrics are described naturally as well.
It is well known that only the axial piece of the torsion couples minimally to fermions in a Riemann-Cartan geometry, while the other ones decouple. In this paper, we consider the Dirac field minimally coupled to a dynamical background with torsion and compute its contribution to the fermionic one-loop effective action. Such a contribution owns topological nature since it can be linked with topological invariants from Riemann-Cartan spaces, like Nieh-Yan and Chern-Simons terms. Furthermore, we propose a novel modified theory of gravity constructed by adding the aforementioned one-loop contribu…
