It usually writes the boundary condition of the wave equation in the Coulomb field as a rough form without considering the size of the atomic nucleus. The rough expression brings on that the solutions of the Klein-Gordon equation and the Dirac equation with the Coulomb potential are divergent at the origin of the coordinates, also the virtual energies, when the nuclear charges number Z > 137, meaning the original solutions do not satisfy the conditions for determining solution. Any divergences of the wave functions also imply that the probability density of the meson or the electron would rapidly increase when they are closing to the atomic nucleus. What it predicts is not a truth that the atom in ground state would rapidly collapse to the neutron-like. We consider that the atomic nucleus has definite radius and write the exact boundary condition for the hydrogen and hydrogen-like atom, then newly solve the radial Dirac-Coulomb equation and obtain a new exact solution without any mathematical and physical difficulties. Unexpectedly, the K value constructed by Dirac is naturally written in the barrier width or the equivalent radius of the atomic nucleus in solving the Dirac equation with the exact boundary condition, and it is independent of the quantum energy. Without any divergent wave function and the virtual energies, we obtain a new formula of the energy levels that is different from the Dirac formula of the energy levels in the Coulomb field.
We present exact analytical solutions of the Dirac equation in $(1+1)$-dimensions for the generalized Kratzer potential by taking the pseudoscalar interaction term as an attractive Coulomb potential. We study the problem for a particular (spin) symmetry of the Dirac Hamiltonian. After a qualitative analyse, we study the results for some special cases such as Dirac-Coulomb problem in the existence of the pseudoscalar interaction, and the "pure" Coulomb problem by discussing some points about pseudospin and spin symmetries in one dimension. We also plot some figures representing the dependence o…
We analyze recent results on a Dirac oscillator. We show that the truncation of the Frobenius series does not yield all the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the radial equation. For this reason the eigenvalues reported by the authors are useless and the prediction of allowed oscillator frequencies meaningless.
The relativistic hydrogen atom in an Euclidean space-time of arbitrary number of space dimensions ($D$) plus one time dimension is revisited. In particular, numerical solutions of the radial Dirac equation for a generalized Coulombian potential proportional to $1/r^{(D-2)}$ are investigated. It is argued that one could not find any physical solution for $D\geq 4$.
We consider the Dirac equation, written in polar formalism, in presence of general Coulomb-like potentials, that is potentials arising from the time component of the vector potential and depending only on the radial coordinate, in order to study the conditions of integrability, given as some specific form for the solution: we find that the angular dependence can always be integrated, while the radial dependence is reduced to finding the solution of a Riccati equation so that it is always possible at least in principle. We exhibit the known case of the Coulomb potential and one special generali…
The Nikiforov-Uvarov polynomial method employed by Aguda to solve the Dirac equation with an improved Rosen-Morse potential plus a Coulomb-like tensor potential is shown inappropriate because the conditions of its application are not fulfilled. We clarify the problem and construct the correct solutions in the spin and pseudospin symmetric regimes via the standard method of solving differential equations. For the bound states, we obtain the spinor wave functions in terms of the generalized hypergeometric functions and in each regime we show that the energy levels are determined by the solutions…
In this work, we study of the (2+1)-dimensional Dirac oscillator in the presence of a homogeneous magnetic field in an Aharonov-Bohm-Coulomb system. To solve our system, we apply the $left$-$handed$ and $right$-$handed$ projection operators in the Dirac oscillator to obtain a biconfluent Heun equation. Next, we explicitly determine the energy spectrum for the bound states of the system and their exact dependence on the cyclotron frequency $ω_c$ and on the parameters $Z$ and $Φ_{AB}$ that characterize the Aharonov-Bohm-Coulomb system. As a result, we observe that by adjusting the frequency of t…
Addendum to "The Dirac-Coulomb Sturmians and the series expansion of the Dirac-Coulomb Green function: application to the relativistic polarizability of the hydrogen-like atom" [J. Phys. B: At. Mol. Opt. Phys. 30 (1997) 825-61, (E) 30 (1997) 2747]
The Breit interaction is implemented in the no-pair variational Dirac-Coulomb (DC) framework using an explicitly correlated Gaussian basis reported in the previous paper [Paper I: P. Jeszenszki, D. Ferenc, and E. Mátyus (2022)]. Both a perturbative and a fully variational inclusion of the Breit term is considered. The no-pair DC plus perturbative Breit as well as the no-pair Dirac-Coulomb-Breit energies are compared with perturbation theory results including the Breit-Pauli Hamiltonian and leading-order non-radiative quantum electrodynamics corrections for low $Z$ values. Possible reasons for …
We investigate the one-dimensional Coulomb potential with application to a class of quasirelativistic systems, so-called Dirac-Weyl materials, described by matrix Hamiltonians. We obtain the exact solution of the shifted and truncated Coulomb problems, with the wavefunctions expressed in terms of special functions (namely Whittaker functions), whilst the energy spectrum must be determined via solutions to transcendental equations. Most notably, there are critical bandgaps below which certain low-lying quantum states are missing in a manifestation of atomic collapse.
In their recent paper (Inter. J. Mod. Phys. A 26 (2011) 1011), Zarrinkamar and coauthors have considered the radial Dirac equation for a Coulomb scalar, vector and tensor interaction. The exact solutions for the energy eigenvalues they have reported for spin-symmetry and pseudo-spin symmetry were mishandled and are incorrect eigenvalues, therefore.
The Dirac-Coulomb equation with positive-energy projection is solved using explicitly correlated Gaussian functions. The algorithm and computational procedure aims for a parts-per-billion convergence of the energy to provide a starting point for further comparison and further developments in relation with high-resolution atomic and molecular spectroscopy. Besides a detailed discussion of the implementation of the fundamental spinor structure, permutation and point-group symmetries, various options for the positive-energy projection procedure are presented. The no-pair Dirac-Coulomb energy conv…
Considering different self-adjoint realisations of positively projected massless Coulomb-Dirac operators we find out, under which conditions any negative perturbation, however small, leads to emergence of negative spectrum. We also prove some weighted Lieb-Thirring estimates for negative eigenvalues of such operators. In the process we find explicit spectral representations for all self-adjoint realisations of massless Coulomb-Dirac operators on the half-line.
We approximately solve the Dirac equation for the inversely quadratic Yukawa (IQY) potential including a Coulomb-like tensor potential with arbitrary spin-orbit coupling quantum number . In the framework of the spin and pseudospin (pspin) symmetry, we obtain the energy eigenvalue equation and the corresponding eigenfunctions in closed form by using the Nikiforov-Uvarov method. The numerical results show that the Coulomb-like tensor interaction removes degeneracies between spin and pspin state doublets.
We study the vacuum polarization of planar charged Dirac fermions by a strong Coulomb potential. Induced vacuum charge density is calculated and analyzed at the subcritical and supercritical Coulomb potentials for massless and massive fermions. For the massless case the induced vacuum charge density is localized at the origin when the Coulomb center charge is subcritical while it has a power-law tail when the Coulomb center charge is supercritical. The finite mass contribution into the induced charge due to the vacuum polarization is small and insignificantly distorts the Coulomb potential onl…
In this work we compute bound solutions for particles and anti-particles of the Dirac equation for a pure tensor radial Coulomb potential plus a constant. We find that the binding depends on the sign the tensor constant potential, and allows only bound solutions for a certain sign and magnitude of the $κ$ quantum number, which is related to the spin-orbit coupling in the Dirac equation. This relation is reversed for anti-particle solutions. On the other hand, the Coulomb tensor potential, although not biding, changes the range of $κ$ values for which there are bound solutions.
We obtain a symmetric tridiagonal matrix representation of the Dirac-Coulomb operator in a suitable complete square integrable basis. Orthogonal polynomials techniques along with Darboux method are used to obtain the bound states energy spectrum, the relativistic scattering amplitudes and phase shifts from the asymptotic behavior of the polynomial solutions associated with the resulting three-term recursion relation.
Solutions of the Dirac equation for an electron in the Coulomb potential are obtained using operator invariants of the equation, namely the Dirac, Johnson-Lippmann and recently found new invariant. It is demonstrated that these operators are the spin invariants. The generalized invariant is constructed and the exact general solution of the Dirac equation are found. In particular, the explicit expressions of the bispinors corresponding to the three complete sets of the invariants, their eigenvalues and quantum numbers are calculated. It is shown that the general solution of one center Coulomb D…
The one-particle Dirac Hamiltonian with Coulomb interaction is known to be realised, in a regime of large (critical) couplings, by an infinite multiplicity of distinct self-adjoint operators, including a distinguished, physically most natural one. For the latter, Sommerfeld's celebrated fine structure formula provides the well-known expression for the eigenvalues in the gap of the continuum spectrum. Exploiting our recent general classification of all other self-adjoint realisations, we generalise Sommerfeld's formula so as to determine the discrete spectrum of all other self-adjoint versions …
By breaking the spin symmetry in the relativistic domain, a powerful tool in physical sciences was lost. In this work, we examine an alternative of spin symmetry for systems described by the many-electron Dirac-Coulomb Hamiltonian. We show that the square of many-electron operator $\mathcal{K}_+$, defined as a sum of individual single-electron time-reversal (TR) operators, is a linear Hermitian operator which commutes with the Dirac-Coulomb Hamiltonian in a finite Fock subspace. In contrast to the square of a standard unitary many-electron TR operator $\mathcal{K}$, the $\mathcal{K}^2_+$ has a…
The Dirac equation with the Coulomb potential is studied. It is shown that there exists a new invariant in addition to the known Dirac and Johnson-Lippman ones. The solution of the Dirac equation, using the generalized invariant, and explicit expressions for the bispinors corresponding to the three sets of the invariants, their eigenvalues and quantum numbers are obtained. The general solution of the Dirac equation with the Coulomb potential is shown to contain free parameters, whose variation transforms one particular solution into any other and controls spatial electron probability amplitude…
Nonperturbative vacuum polarization effects are explored for a supercritical Coulomb source with $Z>Z_{cr}$ in 1+1 D. Both the vacuum charge density $ρ_{vac}(x)$ and vacuum energy $E_{vac}$ are considered. It is shown that in the overcritical region the behavior of vacuum energy could be significantly different from perturbative quadratic growth up to decrease reaching large negative values.
We study the effect of spatially dependent mass function over the solution of the Dirac equation with the Coulomb potential in the (3+1)-dimensions for any arbitrary spin-orbit $κ$ state$.$ In the framework of the spin and pseudospin symmetry concept, the analytic bound state energy eigenvalues and the corresponding upper and lower two-component spinors of the two Dirac particles are obtained by means of the Nikiforov-Uvarov method, in closed form. This physical choice of the mass function leads to an exact analytical solution for the pseudospin part of the Dirac equation. The special cases $%…
We solve the Dirac equation approximately for the attractive scalar $S(r)$ and repulsive vector $V(r)$ Hulthén potentials including a Coulomb-like tensor potential with arbitrary spin-orbit coupling quantum number $κ.$ In the framework of the spin and pseudospin symmetric concept, we obtain the analytic energy spectrum and the corresponding two-component upper- and lower-spinors of the two Dirac particles by means of the Nikiforov-Uvarov method in closed form. The limit of zero tensor coupling and the non-relativistic solution are obtained. The energy spectrum for various levels is presented f…
We investigate the approximate solutions of the Dirac equation with the position-dependent mass particle in the Eckart potential field including the Coulomb tensor interaction by using the parametric Nikiforov-Uvarov method. Taking an appropriate approximation to deal with the centrifugal term, the Dirac energy states and the corresponding normalized two-spinor components of the wave function are obtained in closed form. Some special cases of our solution are investigated. Furthermore, we present the correct solutions obtained via the asymptotic iteration method which are in agreement with the…
By applying the Pekeris-type approximation to deal with the (pseudo or) centrifugal term, the spin and pseudospin symmetry solutions of the Dirac equation for the Rosen-Morse potential including a Coulomb-like tensor potential with arbitrary spin-orbit coupling quantum number $κ$ are obtained by standard method. It has been shown from the numerical results that the degeneracies between spin and pseudospin state doublets are removed by the tensor interaction. Special case of this potential, that is, the spin and pseudospin solutions of the Dirac equation with the modified Pöschl-Teller potentia…
We decouple the Dirac's radial equations in $D+1$ dimensions with Coulomb-type scalar and vector potentials through appropriate transformations. We study each of these uncoupled second-order equations in an algebraic way by using an $su(1,1)$ algebra realization. Based on the theory of irreducible representations, we find the energy spectrum and the radial eigenfunctions. We construct the Perelomov coherent states for the Sturmian basis, which is the basis for the unitary irreducible representation of the $su(1,1)$ Lie algebra. The physical radial coherent states for our problem are obtained b…
The spatially-dependent mass Dirac equation is solved exactly for attractive scalar and repulsive vector Coulomb potentials including a tensor interaction potential under the spin and pseudospin (p-spin) symmetric limits by using the Laplace transformation method (LTM). Closed forms of the energy eigenvalue equation and wave functions are obtained for arbitrary spin-orbit quantum number Some numerical results are given too. The effect of the tensor interaction on the bound states is presented. It is shown that the tensor interaction removes the degeneracy between two states in the spin doublet…
We analyze in detail the analytical solutions of the Dirac equation with scalar S and vector V Coulomb radial potentials near the limit of spin and pseudospin symmetries, i.e., when those potentials have the same magnitude and either the same sign or opposite signs, respectively. By performing an expansion of the relevant coefficients we also assess the perturbative nature of both symmetries and their relations the (pseudo)spin-orbit coupling. The former analysis is made for both positive and negative energy solutions and we reproduce the relations between spin and pseudospin symmetries found …
In this paper, we consider the Dirac-Coulomb equation for many-particles, to describe the interaction between electrons in the system having many electrons. The four-component wave function will expanding into a finite basis-set, using Gaussian basis function technique, in order to describe the upper and lower two components of the 4-spinors, respectively. Gaussian basis-set type dyall.v2z has been adopted to describe the correlation and polarization of 4-component wave function. The small component Gaussian basis functions have been generated from large component Gaussian basis functions usin…
We study massless 1-dimensional Dirac-Coulomb Hamiltonians, that is, operators on the half-line of the form $D_{ω,λ}:=\begin{bmatrix}-\frac{λ+ω}{x}&-\partial_x \\ \partial_x & -\frac{λ-ω}{x}\end{bmatrix}$. We describe their closed realizations in the sense of the Hilbert space $L^2(\mathbb R_+,\mathbb C^2)$, allowing for complex values of the parameters $λ,ω$. In physical situations, $λ$ is proportional to the electric charge and $ω$ is related to the angular momentum. We focus on realizations of $D_{ω,λ}$ homogeneous of degree $-1$. They can be organized in a single holomorphic family of clos…
An impermeable barrier at $r=r_{cl}$ in the effective potential of the relativistic Schrödinger-type equation leads to exclusion of the range $0 \leq r < r_{cl}$ from the wave function domain. Based on duality of the Schrödinger-type equation and the Dirac equation, a similar exclusion should be made in the wave functions domain of the Dirac equation. As a result, we obtain new solutions to the Dirac equation in the Coulomb repulsive field. Calculations show that depending on working parameters, at distances of several fractions or units of the Compton wavelength of the fermion from $r=r_{cl}$…
Based on the original combination of analytical methods, computer algebra tools and numerical calculations, proposed recently in Refs. [1]-[3], the non-perturbative vacuum polarization effects in the 2+1 D supercritical Dirac-Coulomb system with $Z > Z_{cr,1}$ are explored. Both the vacuum charge density $ρ_{VP}(\vec{r})$ and vacuum energy $\mathcal{E}_{VP}$ are considered. The main result of the work is that in the overcritical region $\mathcal{E}_{VP}$ turns out to be a rapidly decreasing function $\sim - η_{eff}\, Z^3/R\, $ with $η_{eff}>0 $ and $R$ being the size of the external Coulomb so…
We obtain the exact solution to the Dirac equation with the Poschl-Teller double ring-shaped Coulomb (PTDRSC) potential for any spin-orbit quantum number K. The relativistic scattering amplitude for spin 1/2 particles in the field of this potential has been studied. The wave functions are expressed in terms of the hyper-geometric series of the continuous states on the K/2Pi scale. A formula for the phase shifts has also been found. In the nonrelativistic limits, our solution to the Dirac system converges to that of the Schrödinger one. At the high temperature, the partition function is calcula…
We examine the bound state solutions of the Dirac equation under the spin and pseudospin symmetries for a new suggested combined potential, Hulten plus a class of Yukawa potential including a Coulomb-like tensor interaction. An improved scheme is employed to deal with the centrifugal (pseudo-centrifugal) term. Using the Nikiforov-Uvarov and SUSYQM methods, we analytically develop the relativistic energy eigenvalues and associated Dirac spinor components of wave functions. We find that both methods give entirely the same results. Modifiable of our results into some particular potential cases, u…
Non-perturbative vacuum polarization effects are explored for a supercritical Dirac-Coulomb system with $Z > Z_{cr,1}$ in 2+1 D, based on the original combination of analytical methods, computer algebra and numerical calculations, proposed recently in Refs. [1]-[3]. Both the vacuum charge density $ρ_{VP}(\vec{r})$ and vacuum energy $\mathcal{E}_{VP}$ are considered. Due to a lot of details of calculation the whole work is divided into two parts I and II. Taking account of results, obtained in the part I [4] for $ρ_{VP}$, in the present part II the evaluation of the vacuum energy $\mathcal{E}_{…
In this work, a spin $\frac 12$ relativistic particle described by a generalized potential containing both the Coulomb potential and a Lorentz scalar potential in Dirac equation is investigated in terms of the generalized ladder operators from supersymmetry in quantum mechanics. This formalism is applied for the generalized Dirac-Coulomb problem, which is an exactly solvable potential in relativistic quantum mechanics. We obtain the energy eigenvalues and calculate explicitly the energy eigenfunctions for the ground state and the first excited state.
We study the two dimensional massless Coulomb-Dirac operator restricted to its positive spectral subspace and prove estimates on the negative eigenvalues created by electromagnetic perturbations.
