Below the Kondo temperature the heavy Fermion compound YbRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ shows a well defined Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) with local Yb$^{3+}$ properties. We report a detailed analysis of the ESR intensity which gives information on the number of ESR active centers relative to the ESR of well localized Yb$^{3+}$ in YPd$_3$:Yb. The ESR lineshape is investigated regarding contributions from itinerant centers. From the ESR of monoisotopic $^{174}$YbRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ we could exclude unresolved hyperfine contributions to the lineshape.
The intermetallic semiconductor FeGa$_{3}$ acquires itinerant ferromagnetism upon electron doping by a partial replacement of Ga with Ge. We studied the electron spin resonance (ESR) of high-quality single crystals of FeGa$_{3-x}$Ge$_x$ for $x$ from 0 up to 0.162 where ferromagnetic order is observed. For $x = 0$ we observed a well-defined ESR signal, indicating the presence of pre-formed magnetic moments in the semiconducting phase. Upon Ge doping the occurrence of itinerant magnetism clearly affects the ESR properties below $\approx 40$~K whereas at higher temperatures an ESR signal as seen …
Magnetic dc susceptibility ($χ$) and electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements in the paramagnetic regime, are presented. We found a Curie-Weiss (CW) behavior for $χ$(T) with a ferromagnetic $Θ= 446(5)$ K and $μ_{eff} = 4.72(9) μ_{B}/f.u.$, this being lower than that expected for either $Fe^{3+}(5.9μ_{B})$ or $Fe^{2+}(4.9μ_{B})$ ions. The ESR g-factor $g = 2.01(2)$, is associated with $Fe^{3+}$. We obtained an excellent description of the experiments in terms of two interacting sublattices: the localized $Fe^{3+}$ ($3d^{5}$) cores and the delocalized electrons. The coupled equations were solv…
The layered compound EuFe2As2 is an interesting model system to investigate the effects of well defined local Eu2+ 4f states on the itinerant electronic and magnetic properties of the FeAs layers. To address this subject, we investigated the series EuFe2-xCoxAs2 (0.1 <= x <=0.75) by electron spin resonance (ESR) of Eu2+ to probe the spin dynamics of the itinerant subsystem. We relate the results to dc-susceptibility measurements and band structure calculations. As a consequence of the weak coupling between the local and itinerant subsystems we found that the spin relaxation is well understood …
Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) can microscopically probe both conduction electrons (ce) and local moment (LM) spin systems in different materials. A ce spin resonance (CESR) is observed in metallic systems based on light elements or with enhanced Pauli susceptibility. LM ESR is frequently seen in compounds with paramagnetic ions and localized d or f electrons. Here we report a remarkable and unprecedented ESR signal in the heavy fermion (HF) superconductor beta-YbAlB4[1] which behaves as a CESR at high temperatures and acquires characteristics of the Yb3+ LM ESR at low temperature. This dual be…
We report an unconventional temperature dependence of the resistivity in several strongly correlated systems approaching a localized to itinerant electronic transition from the itinerant electron side. The observed resistivity, proportioanl to T^(3/2)over the entire range of materials discussed, cannot be explained within the framework of existing theories. We propose a model in which the scattering of the conduction electrons by locally cooperative bond-length fluctuations in a matrix of vibronic and Fermi-liquid electrons can account for the experimental data.
We use the density matrix renormalization group method to study the interplay of the localized and itinerant behaviors in the one-dimensional Kondo-Heisenberg model. We find signatures of simultaneously localized and itinerant behaviors of the local spins and attribute this duality to their simultaneous entanglement within the spin chain and with conduction electrons due to incomplete hybridization. We propose a microscopic definition of the hybridization parameter that measures this "partial" itinerancy. Our results provide a microscopic support for the dual nature of f-electrons and the resu…
Electrons in solids have been conventionally classified as either band-like itinerant ones or atomic-like localized ones depending on their properties. For heavy Fermion (HF) compounds, however, the f electrons show both itinerant and localized behaviours depending on temperature. Above the characteristic temperature T*, which is typically of the order of few K to few tens K, their magnetic properties are well described by the ionic f-electron models, suggesting that the f-electrons behave as 'localized' electrons. On the other hand, well below T*, their Fermi surfaces (FS's) have been observe…
We extend and apply a recent theory of the dynamical spin response of Anderson lattice systems to interpret ESR data on YbRh2Si2. Starting within a semiphenomenological Fermi liquid description at low temperatures T < Tx (a crossover temperature) and low magnetic fields B << Bx, we extend the description to the non-Fermi liquid regime by adopting a quasiparticle picture with effective mass and spin susceptibility varying logarithmically with energy/temperature, as observed in experiment. We find a sharp ESR resonance line slightly shifted from the local f-level resonance and broadened by quasi…
Highly accurate numerical results for single-particle spectrum and order parameter are obtained for the magnetically ordered Kondo lattice by means of the dynamical mean-field theory combined with the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method. Hybridized energy bands involving local spins are identified in the Néel state as a hallmark of itinerant antiferromagnetism. At the boundary of the reduced Brillouin zone, the two-fold degeneracy remains in spite of the doubled unit cell. This degeneracy results if the molecular field felt by localized spins has identical magnitude and reversed directi…
We investigated the spin dynamics by electron spin resonance (ESR) of the Yb-based, effective spin-1/2 delafossites NaYbO$_{2}$, AgYbO$_{2}$, LiYbS$_{2}$, NaYbS$_{2}$, and NaYbSe$_{2}$ which all show an absence of magnetic order down to lowest reachable temperatures and thus are prime candidates to host a quantum spin-liquid ground state in the vicinity of long range magnetic order. Clearly resolved ESR spectra allow to obtain well-defined $g$ values which are determined by the crystal field of the distorted octahedral surrounding of the Yb-ions in trigonal symmetry. This local crystal field i…
The electronic properties of Cerium (Ce) and ytterbium (Yb) intermetallic compounds may display a more local or more itinerant character depending on the interplay of the exchange interactions among the $4f$ electrons and the Kondo coupling between $4f$ and conduction electrons. For the more itinerant case, the materials form heavy-fermions once the Kondo effect is developed at low temperatures. Hence, a temperature variation occurs in the electronic structure that can be traced by investigating the optical conductivity ($σ(ω)$) spectra. Remarkably, the temperature variation in the $σ(ω)$ spec…
We present a microscopic examination for the itinerant-localized duality model which has been proposed to understand anomalous properties of strongly correlated systems like the heavy fermions by Kuramoto and Miyake, and also useful to describe the anomalous properties of the high-Tc cupurates. We show that the thermodynamic potential of the strongly interacting Hubbard model can be rearranged in the form of duality model on the basis of renormalized perturbation expansion of the Luttinger-Ward functional if the one-particle spectral weight exhibits triple peak structure. We also examine the i…
A novel method for mapping the local spin and orbital nature of the ground state of a system via corresponding flip excitations in both sectors is proposed based on angle resolved resonant photoemission and related diffraction patterns, presented here for the first time via an ab-initio modified one-step theory of photoemission. The analysis is done on the paradigmatic weak itinerant ferromagnet bcc Fe, whose magnetism, seen as a correlation phenomenon given by the coexistence of localized moments and itinerant electrons, and the non-Fermi liquid behaviour at ambient and extreme conditions bot…
The temperature-dependent evolution pattern of 5f electrons helps to elucidate the long-standing itinerant-localized dual nature in plutonium-based compounds. In this work, we investigate the correlated electronic states of PuIn3 dependence on temperature by using a combination of the density functional theory and the dynamical mean-field theory. Not only the experimental photoemission spectroscopy is correctly reproduced, but also a possible hidden 5f itinerant-localized crossover is identified. Moreover, it is found that the quasiparticle multiplets from the many-body transitions gradually e…
We have investigated the temperature (T)-dependent evolution of electronic structures and magnetic properties of an itinerant ferromagnet SrRuO3, employing the combined scheme of the density functional theory and the dynamical mean-field theory (DFT+DMFT). The inclusion of finite dynamical correlation effects beyond the DFT well describes not only the incoherent hump structure observed in the photoemission experiment but also the T-dependent magnetic properties in accordance with experiments. We have shown that the magnetization of SrRuO3 evolves with the Stoner behavior below the Curie temper…
Detailed analysis of the magnetic properties of the Hubbard model within dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) is presented. Using a RPA-like decoupling of two-particle propagators we derive a universal form for susceptibilities, which captures essential aspects of localized and itinerant pictures. This expression is shown to be quantitatively valid whenever long-range coherence of particle-hole excitations can be neglected, as is the case in large parts of the phase diagram where antiferromag- netism is dominant. The applicability of an interpretation in terms of the two archetypical pictures of…
We study the interplay between correlation, itinerant ferromagnetism and local moment formation on the electron doped triangular lattice of sodium cobaltates Na$_x$CoO$_2$. We find that strong correlation renormalizes the Stoner criterion and stabilizes the paramagnetic state for $x<x_c\simeq0.67$. For $x>x_c$, ferromagnetic (FM) order emerges. The enhanced Na dopant potential fluctuations play a crucial role in the sodium rich phases and lead to an inhomogeneous FM state, exhibiting nonmagnetic Co$^{3+}$ patches, antiferromagnetic (AF) correlated regions, and FM clusters with AF domains. Hole…
The standard mean field slave-boson solution for the infinite-$U$ Hubbard model is revised. A slightly modified version is proposed which includes properly the incoherent contribution of the localized states. In contrast to the standard mean field result, this new proposed solution defines a unique spectral function to be used in the calculation of local and not local quantities, and satisfies the correct thermodynamic relations. The same approach is applied also to the mean field approximation in terms of Hubbard operators. As a byproduct of this analysis, Luttinger's theorem is shown to be f…
The Hubbard model in the Heisenberg limit is studied by Kondo-lattice theory. The Kondo temperature T_K or k_BT_K, which is an energy scale of low-energy local quantum spin fluctuations, is enhanced by the resonating valence bond (RVB) mechanism, so that T_K\simeq T_MF/(2D), where T_MF is the Neel temperature in the mean-field approximation of the corresponding Heisenberg model and D is the spatial dimensionality. Electrons certainly behave as localized spins at T\gg T_K, but they are still itinerant at T\ll T_K unless an antiferromagnetic complete gap opens. When the Neel temperature T_N is s…
In this review we present results of our theoretical study of charge and spin ordering in strongly correlated electron systems obtained within various generalizations of the Falicov-Kimball model. The primary goal of this study was to identify crucial interactions that lead to the stabilization of various types of charge ordering in these systems, like the axial striped ordering, diagonal striped ordering, phase-separated ordering, phase-segregated ordering, etc. Among the major interactions that come into account, we have examined the effect of local Coulomb interaction between localized and …
Quantized Berry phases as local order parameters in t-J models are studied. A texture pattern of the local order parameters is topologically stable due to the quantization of non-Abelian Berry phases defined by low-energy states below a spin gap, which exists in the large J/t case with a few electrons. We have confirmed that itinerant singlets in the wide class of t-J models carry the nontrivial Berry phase pi. In the large J/t case for the one-dimensional t-J model, Berry phases are uniformly pi when the number of electrons is N =4n +2, ($n=0,1,2,...$).
A new kind of phase transition is proposed for lattice fermion systems with simplified f^2 configurations at each site. The free energy of the model is computed in the mean-field approximation for both the itinerant state with the Kondo screening, and a localized state with the crystalline electric field (CEF) singlet at each site. The presence of a first-order phase transition is demonstrated in which the itinerant state changes into the localized state toward lower temperatures. In the half-filled case, the insulating state at high temperatures changes into a metallic state, in marked contra…
The temperature dependence of electron spin resonance (ESR) was studied in the oxypnictide superconductors LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ (x = 0.0 and 0.13). In the samples, the ESR signal indicates that the g factor and peak-to-peak linewidth strongly depend on temperature, especially at low temperatures. It indicates a strong coupling picture with existence of local moment. The dependence mentioned above gradually attenuates, and tends to saturation around room-temperature. This behavior could be ascribed to "bottleneck" effect due to coupling of local moment and itinerant electron. In addition, a Cur…
FeCrAs displays an unusual electrical response that is neither metallic in character nor divergent at low temperatures, as expected for an insulating response, and therefore it has been termed a "nonmetal-metal". We carried out neutron scattering experiments on powder and single crystal samples to study the magnetic dynamics and critical fluctuations in FeCrAs. Magnetic neutron diffraction measurements find Cr3+ magnetic order setting in at 115 K with the mean-field critical exponent. Neutron spectroscopy, however, observes gapless stiff magnetic fluctuations emanating from magnetic positions …
Structural, magnetic (M) and thermal (C_m) studies on Ce_2(Ni_{1-y}Pd_y)_2Sn alloys are presented within the 0<y<0.55 range of concentration, showing evidences for itinerant to local electronic transformation. At variance with RKKY type interactions between localized moments μ_{eff}, the substitution of Ni by isoelectronic Pd leads the antiferromagnetic transition to decrease from T_N~3.8K to ~1.2K between y=0 and 0.48, while M(H) measured at H=5Tesla and 1.8K rises from 0.12 up to 0.75μ_B/Ce-at. Furthermore, the C_m(T_N) jump increases with concentration whereas |θ_P| decreases. The magnetic …
The absorptive and dispersive components of the frequency-dependent magnetic susceptibility both contribute to the electron-spin resonance (ESR) radio-frequency (rf) power absorption of local magnetic moments in metals according to Dyson's theory. The magnetic-field prefactor present in the expression for this power absorption has been omitted in the past when fitting Dyson's lineshape to the observed field derivative of broad ESR rf power absorption spectra but is shown here to significantly influence such fits and therefore also the quantitative physical interpretations of the temperature-de…
To reveal the nature of elementary excitations in a quantum spin liquid (QSL), we measured low temperature thermal conductivity and specific heat of 1T-TaS$_2$, a QSL candidate material with frustrated triangular lattice of spin-1/2. The nonzero temperature linear specific heat coefficient $γ$ and the finite residual linear term of the thermal conductivity in the zero temperature limit $κ_0/T=κ/T(T\rightarrow 0)$ are clearly resolved. This demonstrates the presence of highly mobile gapless excitations, which is consistent with fractionalized spinon excitations that form a Fermi surface. Remark…
Electron correlations tend to generate local magnetic moments that usually order if the lattices are not too frustrated. The hexagonal compound SrRu$_2$O$_6$ has a relatively high Neel temperature but small local moments, which seem to be at odds with the nominal valence of Ru$^{5+}$ in the $t_{2g}^3$ configuration. Here, we investigate the electronic property of SrRu$_2$O$_6$ using density functional theory (DFT) combined with dynamical-mean-field theory (DMFT). We find that the strong hybridization between Ru $d$ and O $p$ states results in a Ru valence that is closer to $+4$, leading to the…
The state-of-the-art theoretical description of magnetic materials relies on solving effective Heisenberg spin problems or their generalizations to relativistic or multi-spin-interaction cases that explicitly assume the presence of local magnetic moments in the system. We start with a general interacting fermionic model that is often obtained in ab initio electronic structure calculations and show that the corresponding spin problem can be introduced even in the paramagnetic regime, which is characterized by a zero average value of the magnetization. Further, we derive a physical criterion for…
A phenomenological model with itinerant bands and local states trapped by the lattice on the Cu-sites, is discussed to describe global features of cuprates. Relative energy positions of localized and itinerant states being tuned (thermodynamically or by doping), the system must undergo 1st order Mott metal-insulator transition. Decreasing the local level (from the metallic end of a stoichiometric compound), charge separation instability occurs first before the Mott transition. Crossing and hybridization between local (flat) and itinerant bands introduce a structure in density of states which m…
We developed a framework for directly calculating the spin susceptibility of anisotropic itinerant ferromagnets in the full temperature range within the coherent potential approximation in the disordered local moment picture. As a test of our formulation, we demonstrate the computation for the temperature ($T$) dependence of the spin susceptibility for Rashba-type ferromagnets with the Curie temperature $T_\mathrm{C}$. In a certain parameter, we found that the inverse transverse susceptibility $1/χ_\perp\simeq\mathrm{const.}$ for $T<T_\mathrm{C}$ and $1/χ_\perp\propto T-T_\mathrm{C}$ for $T>T_…
A comprehensive study of impurity-induced magnetism in nonmagnetically (Mg${}^{2+}$) and magnetically (Co${}^{2+}$) doped PbNi${}_{2}$V${}_{2}$O${}_{8}$ compounds is given, using both macroscopic dc susceptibility and local-probe electron spin resonance (ESR) techniques. Magnetic coupling between impurity-liberated spins is estimated from a linewidth of low-temperature ESR signal in Mg-doped samples. In addition, in the case of magnetic cobalt dopants the impurity-host magnetic exchange is evaluated from the Co-induced contribution to the linewidth in the paramagnetic phase. The experimentally…
We present a model study of ferromagnetic films consisting of free Bloch electrons coupled to localized moments (Kondo lattice films). By mapping the local interaction onto an effective Heisenberg Hamiltonian we obtain temperature and carrier density dependent exchange integrals mediating the interaction between local moments via the conduction electrons. The non-perturbative approach recovers analytically the weak-coupling RKKY interaction and yields convincing numerical results in the strong coupling (double exchange) regime. The Curie temperature is calculated for various coupling strengths…
Magnetic skyrmions are promising spin textures for building next-generation magnetic memories and spintronic devices. Nevertheless, one of the major challenges in realizing skyrmion-based devices is the stabilization of ordered arrays of these spin textures in different geometries. Here we numerically study the skyrmion-skyrmion interaction potential that arises due to the dynamics of itinerant electrons coupled to the magnetic texture in a ferromagnetic background with racetrack geometry. We consider different topological textures (ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM)), namely: skyr…
The interplay between non-trivial topological states of matter and strong electronic correlations is one of the most compelling open questions in condensed matter physics. Due to experimental challenges, there is an increasing desire to find more microscopic techniques to complement the results of more traditional experiments. In this work, we locally explore the Kondo insulator Sm$_{1-x}$Gd$_{x}$B$_{6}$ by means of electron spin resonance (ESR) of Gd$^{3+}$ ions at low temperatures. Our analysis reveals that the Gd$^{3+}$ ESR line shape shows an anomalous evolution as a function of temperatur…
We study collective spin excitations of a magnetically ordered state in a multi-component system composed of both itinerant electrons and local moments. Here the induced spin-density-wave (SDW) ordering of itinerant electrons and the collinear antiferromangetic (AF) ordering of local moments are locked together via a Hund's rule coupling. We show that the Goldstone theorem still holds at the RPA level with the gapless spin wave protected inside the small SDW gap of itinerant electrons, which, however, is fragile in the presence of ion-anisotropy. A gapped out-of-phase spin mode extending over …

We theoretically investigated magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MA) at a finite temperature $T$ in ferromagnetic metals. Assuming a Rashba-type ferromagnet with uniaxial MA, we defined the MA constants $K_\mathrm{u}(T)$ derived from several different concepts. Our purpose was to examine the equality between them and to confirm a power law between $K_\mathrm{u}(T)$ and magnetization $M(T)$ in the form of $K_\mathrm{u}(T)/K_\mathrm{u}(0)=[M(T)/M(0)]^α$. We demonstrate that $α$ equals 2 in the itinerant-electron limit and increases with the localized feature of electrons passing through $α=3$, predi…
Interplay between itinerant electrons and localized spins in itinerant magnets gives rise to a variety of noncoplanar multiple-$Q$ spin textures, such as the skyrmion, hedgehog, meron, and vortex. We elucidate that another type of multiple-$Q$ state consisting of collinear sinusoidal waves, a magnetic bubble crystal, appears at finite temperatures in a centrosymmetric itinerant electron system. The results are obtained for the classical Kondo lattice model with easy-axis single-ion anisotropy on a triangular lattice by a large-scale numerical simulation. We find that a finite-temperature topol…
In view of the recent experimental facts in the iron-pnictides, we make a proposal that the itinerant electrons and local moments are simultaneously present in such multiband materials. We study a minimal model composed of coupled itinerant electrons and local moments to illustrate how a consistent explanation of the experimental measurements can be obtained in the leading order approximation. In this mean-field approach, the spin-density-wave (SDW) order and superconducting pairing of the itinerant electrons are not directly driven by the Fermi surface nesting, but are mainly induced by their…
We derive the effective interactions between local magnetic moments which are mediated by Weyl electrons in magnetic topological semimetals. The resulting spin dynamics is governed by the induced Heisenberg, Kitaev and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions with extended range and oscillatory dependence on the distance between the spins. These interactions are realized in multiple competing channels shaped by the multitude of Weyl nodes in the electron spectrum. Microscopic spins need to be spatially modulated with a channel-dependent wavevector in order to take advantage of the interactions.…
We theoretically investigate the itinerant ferromagnetic transition of a spherically trapped ultracold Fermi gas with spin imbalance under strongly repulsive interatomic interactions. Our study is based on a self-consistent solution of the Hartree-Fock mean-field equations beyond the widely used local density approximation. We demonstrate that, while the local density approximation holds in the paramagnetic phase, after the ferromagnetic transition it leads to a quantitative discrepancy in various thermodynamic quantities even with large atom numbers. We determine the position of the phase tra…
SrRu2O6 has unique magnetic properties. It is characterized by a very high Néel temperature, despite its quasi-two-dimensional structure, and has a magnetic moment more than twice reduced compared to the formal ionic count. First principles calculations show that only an ideal Neel ordering in the Ru plane is possible, with no other metastable magnetic solutions, and, highly unusually, yield dielectric gaps for both antiferromagnetic and nonmagnetic states. We demonstrate that this strange behavior is the result of the formation of very specific electronic objects, recently suggested for a geo…
Transport properties of itinerant electrons interacting with local spins are analyzed as function of the bandwidth, $W$, the exchange interaction, $J$, and the band filling, $n$, near the band edge. Numerical results have been obtained within the dynamical mean-field approximation and interpreted with the help of analytical treatments. If spatial correlations of the magnetic fluctuations can be neglected, and defining $ρ(m)$ as the magnetization dependent resistivity, we find that $δρ/ ρ(0) \sim n^{-4/3}$ for $J / W, n \ll 1$ (weak coupling, low density limit), $δρ/ ρ(0) \sim constant$, for $J…
Motivated by both experimental and theoretical activities, we discuss the fate of Kondo screening and possible quantum phase transitions in antiferromagnetically ordered phases of Kondo lattices. While transitions with topological changes of the Fermi surface may occur, we demonstrate that an entirely continuous evolution from itinerant to local-moment antiferromagnetism (i.e. from strong to negligible Kondo screening) is possible as well. This situation is in contrast to that in a non-symmetry-broken situation where a quantum phase transition towards an exotic metallic spin-liquid state neces…
We propose a parameter-free scheme of calculation of the orbital polarization (OP) in metals, which starts with the strong-coupling limit for the screened Coulomb interactions in the random-phase approximation (RPA). For itinerant magnets, RPA can be further improved by restoring the spin polarization of the local-spin-density approximation (LSDA) through the local-field corrections. The OP is then computed in the static GW approach, which systematically improves the orbital magnetization and the magnetic anisotropy energies in transition-metal and actinide compounds.
Magnetization, nuclear magnetic resonance, high-resolution x-ray diffraction and magnetic field-dependent neutron diffraction measurements reveal a novel magnetic ground state of Ba{0.60}K{0.40}Mn2As2 in which itinerant ferromagnetism (FM) below a Curie temperature TC = 100 K arising from the doped conduction holes coexists with collinear antiferromagnetism (AFM) of the Mn local moments that order below a Neel temperature TN = 480 K. The FM ordered moments are aligned in the tetragonal ab-plane and are orthogonal to the AFM-ordered Mn moments that are aligned along the c-axis. The magnitude an…
Identifying the nature of magnetism, itinerant or localized, remains a major challenge in condensed-matter science. Purely localized moments appear only in magnetic insulators, whereas itinerant moments more or less co-exist with localized moments in metallic compounds such as the doped-cuprate or the iron-based superconductors, hampering a thorough understanding of the role of magnetism in phenomena like superconductivity or magnetoresistance. Here we distinguish two antiferromagnetic modulations with respective propagation wave vectors of $Q_{\pm}$ = ($H \pm 0.557(1)$, 0, $L \pm 0.150(1)$) a…
An effective field theory is derived that describes the quantum critical behavior of itinerant ferromagnets in the presence of quenched disorder. In contrast to previous approaches, all soft modes are kept explicitly. The resulting effective theory is local and allows for an explicit perturbative treatment. It is shown that previous suggestions for the critical fixed point and the critical behavior are recovered under certain assumptions. The validity of these assumptions is discussed in the light of the existence of two different time scales. It is shown that, in contrast to previous suggesti…
Heavy fermion (HF) states emerge in correlated quantum materials due to the interplay between localized magnetic moments and itinerant electrons, but rarely appear in 3d-electron systems due to high itinerancy of d-electrons. Here, an anomalous enhancement of Kondo screening is observed at the Kondo hole of local Fe vacancies in Fe3GeTe2 which is a recently discovered 3d-HF system featuring of Kondo lattice and two-dimensional itinerant ferromagnetism. An itinerant Kondo-Ising model is established to reproduce the experimental results which provides insight of the competition between Ising fer…
The temperature dependence of magnetization and specific heat of the ferromagnetic compound DyFe2Zn20 has been measured in detail in various magnetic fields. We have observed anomalous magnetic behavior, i.e., a strong anisotropy at 2 K, disappearance of this anisotropy between approximately 30 K and T_c, and anomalous behavior of the specific heat in the magnetic fields near 20 K. These anomalous phenomena have been analyzed based on the strong exchange interaction between the Fe itinerant electrons and the Dy localized electrons as well as the crystalline electric field, Zeeman energy, and a…
The physics of weak itinerant ferromagnets is challenging due to their small magnetic moments and the ambiguous role of local interactions governing their electronic properties, many of which violate Fermi liquid theory. While magnetic fluctuations play an important role in the materials' unusual electronic states, the nature of these fluctuations and the paradigms through which they arise remain debated. Here we use inelastic neutron scattering to study magnetic fluctuations in the canonical weak itinerant ferromagnet MnSi. Data reveal that short-wavelength magnons continue to propagate until…
Around discontinuous (first-order) magnetic phase transitions the strong caloric response of materials to the application of small fields is widely studied for the development of solid-state refrigeration. Typically strong magnetostructural coupling drives such transitions and the attendant substantial hysteresis dramatically reduces the cooling performance. In this context we describe a purely electronic mechanism which pilots a first-order paramagnetic-ferromagnetic transition in divalent lanthanide compounds and which explains the giant non-hysteretic magnetocaloric effect recently discover…
A broken symmetry ground state without any magnetic moments has been calculated by means of local-density-approximation to density functional theory plus a local exchange term, the so-called LDA+$U$ approach, for URu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$. The solution is analysed in terms of a multipole tensor expansion of the itinerant density matrix and is found to be a non-trivial magnetic multipole. Analysis and further calculations show that this type of multipole enters naturally in time reversal breaking in presence of large effective spin-orbit coupling and co-exists with magnetic moments for most magnetic ac…
The layered cobaltite [Ca$_2$CoO$_3$]$_{0.62}$[CoO$_2$], often expressed as the approximate formula Ca$_3$Co$_4$O$_9$, is a promising candidate for efficient oxide thermoelectrics but an origin of its unusual thermoelectric transport is still in debate. Here we investigate \textit{in-plane} anisotropy of the transport properties in a broad temperature range to examine the detailed conduction mechanism. The in-plane anisotropy between $a$ and $b$ axes is clearly observed both in the resistivity and the thermopower, which is qualitatively understood with a simple band structure of the triangular…

We present a unified theory of magnetism and superconductivity of $UGe_2$. To this end, we consider part of $5f$ uranium electrons as mostly itinerant and other ones as mostly localized. The main feature that distinguishes the localized from the itinerant electrons is the effect of the pressure on them. The pressure strongly screens the itinerant electrons while the localized ones are almost unaffected. The screening of itinerant electrons leads to decreasing of their Coulomb repulsion, therefore to formation of doubly occupied and empty states. These states are spin-singlet and the effective …
