We extend and apply a recent theory of the dynamical spin response of Anderson lattice systems to interpret ESR data on YbRh2Si2. Starting within a semiphenomenological Fermi liquid description at low temperatures T < Tx (a crossover temperature) and low magnetic fields B << Bx, we extend the description to the non-Fermi liquid regime by adopting a quasiparticle picture with effective mass and spin susceptibility varying logarithmically with energy/temperature, as observed in experiment. We find a sharp ESR resonance line slightly shifted from the local f-level resonance and broadened by quasiparticle scattering (taking unequal g-factors of conduction and f electrons) and by spin-lattice relaxation, both significantly reduced by the effect of ferromagnetic fluctuations. A detailed comparison of our theory with the data shows excellent agreement in the Fermi liquid regime. In the non-Fermi liquid regime we find a close relation of the T-dependence of the specific heat/spin susceptibility with the observed T-dependence of line shift and linewidth.
Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) can microscopically probe both conduction electrons (ce) and local moment (LM) spin systems in different materials. A ce spin resonance (CESR) is observed in metallic systems based on light elements or with enhanced Pauli susceptibility. LM ESR is frequently seen in compounds with paramagnetic ions and localized d or f electrons. Here we report a remarkable and unprecedented ESR signal in the heavy fermion (HF) superconductor beta-YbAlB4[1] which behaves as a CESR at high temperatures and acquires characteristics of the Yb3+ LM ESR at low temperature. This dual be…
An electron spin resonance (ESR) study of the heavy fermion compound YbRh2Si2 for fields up to ~ 8 T reveals a strongly anisotropic signal below the single ion Kondo temperature T_K ~ 25 K. A remarkable similarity between the T-dependence of the ESR parameters and that of the specific heat and the 29Si nuclear magnetic resonance data gives evidence that the ESR response is given by heavy fermions which are formed below T_K and that ESR properties are determined by their field dependent mass and lifetime. The signal anisotropy, otherwise typical for Yb{3+} ions, suggests that, owing to a strong…
Below the Kondo temperature the heavy Fermion compound YbRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ shows a well defined Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) with local Yb$^{3+}$ properties. We report a detailed analysis of the ESR intensity which gives information on the number of ESR active centers relative to the ESR of well localized Yb$^{3+}$ in YPd$_3$:Yb. The ESR lineshape is investigated regarding contributions from itinerant centers. From the ESR of monoisotopic $^{174}$YbRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ we could exclude unresolved hyperfine contributions to the lineshape.
We suggest that electron spin resonance (ESR) experiment can be used as a probe of spinon excitations of hypothetical spin-liquid state of frustrated antiferromagnet in the presence of asymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. We describe assumptions under which the ESR response is reduced to the response of 2D electron gas with Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Unlike previous treatments, the spin-orbit coupling, Δ_{SO}, is not assumed small compared to the Zeeman splitting, Δ_Z. We demonstrate that ESR response diverges at the edges of the absorption spectrum for ac magnetic field perpend…
We investigate the electron-spin resonance (ESR) phenomenon in the heavy-fermion metal YbRh2Si2 by applying hydrostatic pressure up to 3 GPa and by inducing internal pressure on the Yb site chemically in Yb(Rh1-xCox)2Si2 samples. We found that the increase in pressure, reducing the hybridization between 4f and conduction electrons, leads to a remarkable change in the temperature dependence of the g factor and broadens the ESR line. We relate the differences between the effect of internal and external pressure on the low temperature ESR parameters to the disorder induced by Co doping. The press…
We develop a theoretical basis for understanding the spin relaxation processes in Kondo lattice systems with heavy fermions as experimentally observed by electron spin resonance (ESR). The Kondo effect leads to a common energy scale that regulates a logarithmic divergence of different spin kinetic coefficients and supports a collective spin motion of the Kondo ions with conduction electrons. We find that the relaxation rate of a collective spin mode is greatly reduced due to a mutual cancelation of all the divergent contributions even in the case of the strongly anisotropic Kondo interaction. …
The heavy fermion metal β-YbAlB4 exhibits a bulk room temperature conduction electron ESR signal which evolves into an Ising-anisotropic f-electron signal exhibiting hyperfine features at low temperatures. We develop a theory for this phenomenon based on the development of resonant scattering off a periodic array of Kondo centers. We show that the hyperfine structure arises from the scattering off the Yb atoms with non zero nuclear spin, while the constancy of the ESR intensity is a consequence of the presence of CEF excitations of the order of the hybridization strength.
Electron spin resonance (ESR) is usually interpreted as a single-particle phenomenon protected from the effect of many-body correlations. We show that this is not the case in a two-dimensional Fermi liquid (FL) with spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Depending on whether the magnetic field is below or above some critical value, ESR in such a system probes up to three collective chiral-spin modes, augmented by the presence of the field, or the Larmor mode, augmented both by SOC and FL renormalizations. We argue that ESR can be used as a probe not only for SOC but also for many-body physics.
Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) measurements of the ferromagnetic Kondo lattice system CeRuPO show a well defined ESR signal which is related to the magnetic properties of the Ce3+ moment. In contrast, no ESR signal could be observed in the antiferromagnetic homologue CeOsPO. Additionally, we detect an ESR signal in a further ferromagnetic Yb compound, YbRh, while it was absent in a number of Ce or Yb intermetallic compounds with dominant antiferromagnetic exchange, independently of the presence of a strong Kondo interaction or the proximity to a (quantum) critical point. Thus, the observation o…
Below the Kondo temperature $T_{\rm K}$ electron spin resonance (ESR) usually is not observable from the Kondo-ion itself because the characteristic spin fluctuation energy results in a huge width of the ESR line. The heavy fermion metal YbRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ seems to be an exceptional case where definite ESR spectra show characteristic properties of the Kondo-ion Yb$^{3+}$ well \textit{below} $T_{\rm K}$. We found that the spin dynamics of YbRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$, as determined by its ESR relaxation, is spatially characterized by an anisotropy of the zero temperature residual relaxation only.
A series of electron spin resonance (ESR) experiments were performed on a single crystal of the heavy fermion metal YbIr2Si2 to map out the anisotropy of the ESR-intensity I_ESR which is governed by the microwave field component of the g-factor. The temperature dependencies of I_ESR(T) and g(T) were measured for different orientations and compared within the range 2.6K \le T \le 16K. The analysis of the intensity dependence on the crystal orientation with respect to both the direction of the microwave field and the static magnetic field revealed remarkable features: The intensity variation wit…
We discuss electron spin resonance (ESR) shifts in spin-1 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chains with a weak single-ion anisotropy based on several effective field theories, the O(3) nonlinear sigma model (NLSM) in the Haldane phase, free fermion theories around the lower and the upper critical fields. In the O(3) NLSM, the single-ion anisotropy corresponds to a composite operator which creates two magnons at the same time and position. Therefore, even inside a parameter range where free magnon approximation is valid, we have to take interactions among magnons into account. Though the O(3) NLSM i…
We fully support the interpretation of Prof. F. Steglich, reported recently in Phys. Rev. Lett. 91 (2003)156401, that the observed \textit{below} Kondo temperature, Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) in a heavy fermion metal YbRh2Si2 is associated with the Yb3+ moment, more exactly with the strongly-correlated 4f13 configuration. We derived the ground-state eigenfunction Gamma_7^1= 0.803|\pm 3/2>+ 0.595|\mp 5/2> - 0.026|\mp 1/2> - 0.008|\pm 7/2> and crystal field parameters: B20= +14 K, B40= +60 mK, B60= -0.5 mK, B44= -2.23 K and B64= -10 mK with a small orthorhombic distortion B22= +0.23 K, that p…
We present a new experimental approach to investigate the magnetic properties of the anisotropic heavy-fermion system YbRh$_2$Si$_2$ as a function of crystallographic orientation. Angle-dependent electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements are performed at a low temperature of 1.6 K and at an ESR frequency of 4.4 GHz utilizing a superconducting planar microwave resonator in a $^4$He-cryostat in combination with in-situ sample rotation. The obtained ESR g-factor of YbRh$_2$Si$_2$ as a function of the crystallographic angle is consistent with results of previous measurements using conventional ES…
Investigating solids with light gives direct access to charge dynamics, electronic and magnetic excitations. For heavy fermions, one has to adjust the frequency of the probing light to the small characteristic energy scales, leading to spectroscopy with microwaves. We review general concepts of the frequency-dependent conductivity of heavy fermions, including the slow Drude relaxation and the transition to a superconducting state, which we also demonstrate with experimental data taken on UPd2Al3. We discuss the optical response of a Fermi liquid and how it might be observed in heavy fermions. …
We present the field and temperature behavior of the narrow Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) response in YbRh2Si2 well below the single ion Kondo temperature. The ESR g factor reflects a Kondo-like field and temperature evolution of the Yb3+ magnetism. Measurements towards low temperatures (>0.5K) have shown distinct crossover anomalies of the ESR parameters upon approaching the regime of a well defined heavy Fermi liquid. Comparison with the field dependence of specific heat and electrical resistivity reveal that the ESR parameters can be related to quasiparticle mass and cross section and, henc…
Experiments on the $Gd^{3+}$ Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) in the filled skutterudite $Ce_{1-x}Gd_{x}Fe_{4}P_{12}$ ($x \approx 0.001$), at temperatures where the host resistivity manifests a smooth insulator-metal crossover, provides evidence of the underlying Kondo physics associated with this system. At low temperatures (below $T \approx K$), $Ce_{1-x}Gd_{x}Fe_{4}P_{12}$ behaves as a Kondo-insulator with a relatively large hybridization gap, and the $Gd^{3+}$ ESR spectra displays a fine structure with lorentzian line shape, typical of insulating media. The electronic gap is attributed to the…
We solve the 3D periodic Anderson model via two impurity DMFT. We obtain the temperature v.s. hybridization phase diagram. In approaching the quantum critical point (QCP) both the Neel and lattice Kondo temperatures decrease and they do not cross at the lowest temperature we reached. While strong ferromagnetic spin fluctuation on the Kondo side is observed, our result indicates the critical static spin susceptibility is local in space at the QCP. We observe in the crossover region logarithmic temperature dependence in the specific heat coefficient and spin susceptibility.
We calculate the dynamical spin response of Kondo impurity and Kondo lattice systems within a semiphenomenological Fermi liquid description, at low temperatures $T<T_K$, the Kondo temperature, and low magnetic fields $B \ll k_B T_K/gμ_B$. Fermi liquid parameters are determined by comparison (i) with microscopic theory (numerical renormalization group) for the impurity model and (ii) with experiment for the lattice model. We find in the impurity case that the true impurity spin resonance has a width of the order of $T_K$ and disappears altogether if the $g$-factors of impurity spin and conducti…
The spin dynamics of a quasi one dimensional $S=1$ bond alternating spin-gap antiferromagnet Ni(C$_9$H$_{24}$N$_4$)NO$_2$(ClO$_4$) (abbreviated as NTENP) is studied by means of electron spin resonance (ESR) technique. Five modes of ESR transitions are observed and identified: transitions between singlet ground state and excited triplet states, three modes of transitions between spin sublevels of collective triplet states and antiferromagnetic resonance absorption in the field-induced antiferromagnetically ordered phase. Singlet-triplet and intra-triplet modes demonstrate a doublet structure wh…

The electron spin resonance absorption spectrum of Eu^{2+} ions serves as a probe of the normal and superconducting state in Eu_{0.5}K_{0.5}Fe_2As_2. The spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1^{\rm ESR} obtained from the ESR linewidth exhibits a Korringa-like linear increase with temperature above T_C evidencing a normal Fermi-liquid behavior. Below 45 K deviations from the Korringa-law occur which are ascribed to enhanced magnetic fluctuations within the FeAs layers upon approaching the superconducting transition. Below T_C the spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1^{\rm ESR} follows a T^{1.5}-behavi…
We study the transverse dynamical spin susceptibility of the two dimensional U(1) spinon Fermi surface spin liquid in a small applied Zeeman field. We show that both short-range interactions, present in a generic Fermi liquid, as well as gauge fluctuations, characteristic of the U(1) spin liquid, qualitatively change the result based on the frequently assumed non-interacting spinon approximation. Short-range interaction leads to a new collective mode: a "spinon spin wave" which splits off from the two-spinon continuum at small momentum and disperses downward. Gauge fluctuations renormalize the…
A model of spin relaxation in Kondo lattices is proposed to explain the presence of an electron spin resonance (ESR) signal in the heavy fermion compounds YbRh2Si2 and YbIr2Si2. Coupled equations for dynamical susceptibilities of Kondo ions and conduction electrons are derived by means of the functional derivative method. The perturbational scaling approach reveals the collective spin motion of Yb ions with conduction electrons in the bottleneck regime. A common energy scale due to the Kondo effect regulates the temperature dependence of the different kinetic coefficients and results in a mutu…
The temperature dependence of electron spin resonance (ESR) was studied in $EuFe_{2-x}Co_{x}As_2 $ (x = 0.0, 0.067, 0.1, 0.2, 0.25, 0.285, 0.35, 0.4 and 0.5). The ESR spectrum of all the samples indicates that the g factor and peak-to-peak linewidth strongly depend on the temperature. Moreover, the peak-to-peak linewidth shows the Korringa behavior, indicating an exchange coupling between the conduction electrons and the $Eu^{2+}$ions. The linewidth, g factor and the integrate ESR intensity show anomalies at the temperature of the spin-density-wave (SDW). The linewidth below the SDW transition…
Recently observed splitting in angular resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on $\chem{Bi_2Sr_{2-x}La_xCuO_{6+δ}}$ high--temperature superconductor (Janowitz C. {\it et al.}, {\it Europhys. Lett.}, {\bf 60} (2002) 615) is interpreted within the phenomenological Luttinger--liquid framework, in which both the non--Fermi liquid scaling exponent of the spectral function and the spin--charge separation are introduced. The anomalous Green function with adjustable parameters fits very well to the Fermi edge and the low--energy part of ARPES along the $Γ-M$ line in the Brillouin zone. In contras…
We assume the t-t'-J model to describe the CuO_2 planes of hole-doped cuprates and we adapt the spin-charge gauge approach, previously developed for the t-J model, to describe the holes in terms of a spinless fermion carrying the charge (holon) and a neutral boson carrying spin 1/2 (spinon), coupled by a slave-particle gauge field. In this framework we consider the effects of a finite density of incoherent holon pairs in the normal state. Below a crossover temperature, identified as the experimental "upper pseudogap", the scattering of the "quanta" of the phase of the holon-pair field against …
The two-dimensional Hubbard model is studied within the Composite Operator Method (COM) with the residual self-energy computed in the Self-Consistent Born Approximation (SCBA). COM describes interacting electrons in terms of the new elementary excitations appearing in the system owing to strong correlations; residual interactions among these excitations are treated within the SCBA. The anomalous features appearing in the spectral function A(k,ω), the momentum distribution function n(k) and the Fermi surface are analyzed for various values of the filling (from overdoped to underdoped region) in…
Muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) studies of the "1111" and "122" FeAs systems have detected static magnetism with variably sized ordered moments in their parent compounds. The phase diagrams of FeAs, CuO, organic BEDT, A$_{3}$C$_{60}$ and heavy-fermion systems indicate competition between static magnetism and superconductivity, associated with first-order phase transitions at quantum phase boundaries. In both FeAs and CuO systems, the superfluid density $n_{s}/m^{*}$ at $T \to 0$ exhibits a nearly linear scaling with $T_{c}$. Analogous to the roton-minimum energy scaling with the lambda transition…
We introduce a very simple and exactly solvable model that supports Fermi arcs in its ground state and excitation spectrum. These arcs come in pairs, and merge into what we call a pseudo Fermi surface along which fermions are gapped; this fermion gap is naturally identified as a pseudogap. Comparison will be made with phenomenology of high temperature cuprate superconductors.
We extend the study of fermionic particle-hole symmetric semi-Dirac (alternatively, semi-Weyo) dispersion of quasiparticles, $\varepsilon_K = \pm \sqrt{(k_x^2/2m)^2 + (vk_y)^2)} = \pm \varepsilon_0 \sqrt{K_x^4 + K_y^2}$ in dimensionless units, discovered computationally in oxide heterostructures by Pardo and collaborators. This unique system a highly anisotropic sister phase of both (symmetric) graphene and what has become known as a Weyl semimetal, with $<v_y^2>^{1/2} \approx v$ independent of energy, and $<v_x^2>^{1/2} \propto m^{-1/2}\sqrt{\varepsilon}$ being very strongly dependent on ener…
