We introduce a very simple and exactly solvable model that supports Fermi arcs in its ground state and excitation spectrum. These arcs come in pairs, and merge into what we call a pseudo Fermi surface along which fermions are gapped; this fermion gap is naturally identified as a pseudogap. Comparison will be made with phenomenology of high temperature cuprate superconductors.
We suggest a model for electronic structure of cuprate superconductors that makes it possible to describe evolution of this structure with the doping and provides a new explanation for a number of typical features of cuprates, including the pseudogap and the Fermi arcs. According to this model, the unique electronic structure of cuprates is favorable for the formation of two-atomic negative-U centers (NUCs) and realization of a peculiar mechanism of the electron-electron interaction.
The pseudogap phase in the cuprates is a most unusual state of matter: it is a metal, but its Fermi surface is broken up into disconnected segments known as Fermi arcs. Using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we show that the anisotropy of the pseudogap in momentum space and the resulting arcs depend only on the ratio T/T*(x), where T*(x) is the temperature below which the pseudogap first develops at a given hole doping x. In particular, the arcs collapse linearly with T/T* and extrapolate to zero extent as T goes to 0. This suggests that the T = 0 pseudogap state is a nodal liquid, a…
A further discussion of the vortex fluid in the cuprate high Tc superconductors is presented. The crucial property of incompressibility towards the addition of net vorticity, leading to the marked nonlinearity of the response functions, is justified from first principles. We also discuss the Fermi Arc phenomenon of Campuzano as a consequence of the time-fluctuating phase in the vortex fluid.
Through the measurements of magnetic field dependence of specific heat in $La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4$ in zero temperature limit, we find that the nodal slope $v_Δ$ of the superconducting gap has a very similar doping dependence of the pseudogap temperature $T^*$ or value $Δ_p$. Meanwhile the maximum quasiparticle gap derived from $v_Δ$ is quite close to $T^*$. Both indicate a close relationship between the pseudogap and superconductivity. It is also found that $T_c \approx βv_Δγ_n(0)$, where $γ_n(0)$ is the extracted zero temperature value of the normal state specific heat coefficient which is proport…
A full Fermi surface exists in underdoped high-temperature superconductors if the temperature T lies above the pseudogap temperature T*. Below T* only arcs of Fermi surface survive, scaling with T/T* as T -> 0, with T* displaying strong doping dependence. There is no accepted explanation for this behavior. We show that generalizing the BCS theory of normal superconductivity to include d-wave pairs and antiferromagnetism leads to the origin and doping dependence of the T* scale, and a quantitative description of Fermi arcs. These results place strong constraints on viable theories of high-tempe…
We show conclusively that a pseudogap state can arise at $T > T_c$, for reasonable pairing interaction strength, from order parameter fluctuations in a two dimensional minimal model of $d$-wave superconductivity. The occurrence of the pseudogap requires neither strong correlation nor the presence of competing order. We study a model with attractive nearest neighbor interaction and establish our result using a combination of cluster based Monte Carlo for the order parameter field and a twisted-boundary scheme to compute the momentum-resolved spectral function. Apart from a dip in the density of…
The Fermi surface in the state of cuprates is highly unusual because it appears to consist of disconnected segments called arcs. Their very existence challenges the traditional concept of a Fermi surface as closed contours of gapless excitations in momentum space. The length of the arcs in the pseudogap state was thought to linearly increase with temperature, pointing to the existence of a nodal liquid state below T*. These results were interpreted as an interplay of a d-wave pairing gap and strong scattering. Understanding the properties of the arcs is a pre-requisite to understanding the ori…
Since the discovery of the pseudogap and Fermi arc states in underdoped cuprates, the understanding of such non-Fermi-liquid states and the associated violation of Luttinger's theorem have been the central theme in correlated electron systems. However, still lacking is a well-accepted theoretical framework to unambiguously explain these metallic states that are clearly beyond Landau's Fermi liquid and Luttinger's theorem of a Fermi surface and electron filling. Here, we design a lattice model of orthogonal metals with fermion and Ising matter fields coupled to topological order and, by solving…
We present an approach to the normal state of cuprate superconductors which is based on a minimal cluster extension of dynamical mean-field theory. Our approach is based on an effective two-impurity model embedded in a self-consistent bath. The two degrees of freedom of this effective model can be associated to the nodal and antinodal regions of momentum space. We find a metal-insulator transition which is selective in momentum space: At low doping quasiparticles are destroyed in the antinodal region, while they remain protected in the nodal region, leading to the formation of apparent Fermi a…
Through the measurements of magnetic field dependence of specific heat in $La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4$ in zero temperature limit, we determined the nodal slope $v_Δ$ of the quasiparticle gap. It is found that $v_Δ$ has a very similar doping dependence of the pseudogap temperature $T^*$ or value $Δ_p$. Meanwhile the virtual maximum gap at ($π,0$) derived from $v_Δ$ is found to follow the simple relation $Δ_q=0.46k_BT^*$ upon changing the doping concentration. This strongly suggests a close relationship between the pseudogap and superconductivity. It is further found that the superconducting transition t…
In the underdoped high temperature superconductors, instead of a complete Fermi surface above Tc, only disconnected Fermi arcs appear, separated by regions that still exhibit an energy gap. We show that in this pseudogap phase, the energy-momentum relation of electronic excitations near E_F behaves like the dispersion of a normal metal on the Fermi arcs, but like that of a superconductor in the gapped regions. We argue that this dichotomy in the dispersion is hard to reconcile with a competing order parameter, but is consistent with pairing without condensation.
We investigate the low energy properties of a correlated metal in the proximity of a Mott insulator within the Hubbard model in two dimensions. We introduce a new version of the Cellular Dynamical Mean Field Theory using cumulants as the basic irreducible objects. These are used for re-constructing the lattice quantities from their cluster counterparts. The zero temperature one particle Green's function is characterized by the appearance of lines of zeros, in addition to a Fermi surface which changes topology as a function of doping. We show that these features are intimately connected to the …
We analyze the anomalies of superconducting state within a simple exactly solvable model of the pseudogap state, induced by fluctuations of ``dielectric'' short range order, for the model of the Fermi surface with ``hot'' patches. The analysis is performed for the arbitrary values of the correlation length xi_{corr} of this short range order. It is shown that superconducting energy gap averaged over these fluctuations is non zero in a wide temperature range above T_c - the temperature of homogeneous superconducting transition. This follows from the absence of self averaging of the gap over the…
Pseudogap phenomena and the formation of Fermi arcs in underdoped cuprates are numerically studied in the presence of phase fluctuations that are simulated by an XY model. Most importantly the spectral function for each Monte Carlo sample is calculated directly and efficiently by the Chebyshev polynomials without having to diagonalize the fermion Hamiltonian, which enables us to handle a system large enough to achieve sufficient momentum/energy resolution. We find that the momentum dependence of the energy gap is identical to that of a pure d-wave superconductor well below the KT-transition te…
The proposed loop-current order in cuprates cannot give the observed pseudogap and the Fermi-arcs because it preserves translation symmetry. A modification to a periodic arrangement of the four possible orientations of the order parameter with a large period of between about 12 to 30 lattice constants is proposed and shown in a simple and controlled calculation to give one-particle spectra with every feature as in the ARPES experiments. The results follow from (1) the currents at the boundaries of the periodic domains with similar topology as the Affleck-Marston flux phase, and (2) the mixing …
By measuring the low temperature specific heat, the low energy quasi-particle excitation has been derived and analyzed in systematically doped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ single crystals. The Volovik's relation predicted for a d-wave superconductor has been well demonstrated in wide doping regime, showing a robust evidence for the d-wave pairing symmetry. Furthermore the nodal gap slope $v_Δ$ of the superconducting gap is derived and is found to follow the same doping dependence of the pseudogap obtained from ARPES and tunnelling measurement. This strongly suggests a close relationship between…
The "states-non-conserving" fermion density of states (DOS), deduced from the specific heat of hole-doped cuprates, could arise from a Kondo or heavy fermion-like DOS being suppressed by anti-ferromagnetic spin fluctuations. The large Fermi surface predicted by band theory and observed experimentally, is still expected for zero pseudogap, but with an effective mass corresponding to a Kondo temperature ~ 800 K. A finite pseudogap could divide it into Fermi arcs. Theoretical results for the asymmetric Anderson model can account for the experimental Wilson ratio.

Angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) experiments reveal the coherent electronic excitation in the energy spectrum of under- and optimally doped cuprates at temperatures above their temperature of transition into superconducting state only near nodal points on the parts of the "bare" Fermi surface known as the Fermi arcs. That raises questions about the meaning and possible interpretations of the experimental data. Below we derive expressions for the Hall coefficient for the Fermi arc model both in weak and strong magnetic fields.
Motivated by recent experimental measurements, we study the quasiparticle spectra and the collective excitations in doped Sr$_2$IrO$_4$, in which the interesting interplay between the electronic correlations and strong spin-orbital coupling (SOC) exists. To include the SOC, we use the Hugenholtz diagrams to extend the fluctuation exchange (FLEX) approach to the case where the SU(2) symmetry can be broken. By using this generalized FLEX method, we find a weak pseudogap behavior near $(π,0)$ in the slightly electron-doped system, with the corresponding Fermi arc formed by the partial destruction…
Reconstruction of the Fermi surface of high-temperature superconducting cuprates in the pseudogap state is analyzed within nearly exactly solvable model of the pseudogap state, induced by short-range order fluctuations of antiferromagnetic (AFM, spin density wave (SDW), or similar charge density wave (CDW)) order parameter, competing with superconductivity. We explicitly demonstrate the evolution from "Fermi arcs" (on the "large" Fermi surface) observed in ARPES experiments at relatively high temperatures (when both the amplitude and phase of density waves fluctuate randomly) towards formation…
In the pseudogap state of the high-Tc copper-oxide (cuprate) superconductors, angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) measurements have seen an Fermi arc, i.e., an open-ended gapless section in the large Fermi surface, rather than a closed loop expected of an ordinary metal. This is all the more puzzling because Fermi pockets (small closed Fermi surface features) have been suggested from recent quantum oscillation measurements. The Fermi arcs have worried the high-Tc community for many years because they cannot be understood in terms of existing theories. Theorists came up with a way out in the f…
We present an exactly solvable toy model which describes the emergence of a pseudogap in an electronic system due to a fluctuating off-diagonal order parameter. In one dimension our model reduces to the fluctuating gap model (FGM) with a gap Delta (x) that is constrained to be of the form Delta (x) = A e^{i Q x}, where A and Q are random variables. The FGM was introduced by Lee, Rice and Anderson [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf{31}}, 462 (1973)] to study fluctuation effects in Peierls chains. We show that their perturbative results for the average density of states are exact for our toy model if we ass…
We present an exact ground state solution of a quantum dimer model introduced in Ref.[1], which features ordinary bosonic spin-singlet dimers as well as fermionic dimers that can be viewed as bound states of spinons and holons in a hole-doped resonating valence bond liquid. Interestingly, this model captures several essential properties of the metallic pseudogap phase in high-$T_c$ cuprate superconductors. We identify a line in parameter space where the exact ground state wave functions can be constructed at an arbitrary density of fermionic dimers. At this exactly solvable line the ground sta…
Angle resolved photoemission on underdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 reveals that the magnitude and d-wave anisotropy of the superconducting state energy gap are independent of temperature all the way up to Tc. This lack of T variation of the entire k-dependent gap is in marked contrast to mean field theory. At Tc the point nodes of the d-wave gap abruptly expand into finite length ``Fermi arcs''. This change occurs within the width of the resistive transition, and thus the Fermi arcs are not simply thermally broadened nodes but rather a unique signature of the pseudogap phase.
We study fermions in an electrically-probed and asymptotically anti-de Sitter Schwarzschild spacetime which interact via novel chiral symmetry-preserving interactions. Computing the dual fermion two-point correlator, we show that these bulk interactions anisotropically gap Fermi surfaces of the boundary spectrum. Consequently, the interactions we devise provide holographic models for Fermi arcs seen ubiquitously in the pseudogap regime of the cuprates. Our interactions are modifications of the chiral symmetry-breaking Pauli coupling, which has previously been proposed as the holographic realiz…
We consider the effect of a short antiferromagnetic correlation length $ξ$ on the electronic bandstructure of the underdoped cuprates. Starting with a Fermi-surface topology similar to that detected in magnetic quantum-oscillation experiments, we show that a reduced $ξ$ gives an assymmetric broadening of the quasiparticle dispersion, resulting in simulated ARPES data very similar to those observed in experiment. Predicted features include the presence of `Fermi arcs' close to $a{\bf k}=(π/2,π/2)$, without the need to invoke a d-wave pseudogap order parameter. The statistical variation in the $…

Angle resolved photoemission data in the pseudogap phase of underdoped cuprates have revealed the presence of a truncated Fermi surface consisting of Fermi arcs. We compare a number of proposed models for the arcs, and find that the one that best models the data is a d-wave energy gap with a lifetime broadening whose temperature dependence is suggestive of fluctuating pairs.
The Fermi-liquid-like (FL) resistivity recently observed in clean HgBa2CuO4 below the pseudogap temperature was related to carriers at the nodal points on the Fermi surface [4]. We show that this necessitates important implications for the electronic spectrum of underdoped (UD) cuprates in whole. Photoemission experiments picture the spectrum as of metallic arcs separated from each other by regions with large energy gaps. We solved the kinetic equation in such model rigorously. The Fermi arcs carriers contribute to FL resistivity, if scattering between the opposite nodal points admits the Umkl…
A defining property of metals is the existence of a Fermi surface: for two dimensions, a continuous contour in momentum space which separates occupied from unoccupied states. In this paper, I discuss angle resolved photoemission data on the cuprate superconductor BSCCO and argue that it is not best thought of in this conventional picture. Rather, the data are consistent with ``patches'' of finite area connected by more conventional ``arcs''. Novel physics is associated with the patches, in that the states contained in a patch are dispersionless and thus interaction dominated. In the pseudogap …
We generalize the dynamical - mean field theory (DMFT) by including into the DMFT equations dependence on correlation length of pseudogap fluctuations via additional (momentum dependent) self - energy. This self - energy describes non - local dynamical correlations induced by short - ranged collective SDW - like antiferromagnetic spin (or CDW - like charge) fluctuations. At high enough temperatures these fluctuations can be viewed as a quenched Gaussian random field with finite correlation length. This generalized DMFT+Σ_k approach is used for the numerical solution of the weakly doped one - b…
We investigate the scenario of competing order (CO) induced Fermi arcs and pseudogap in cuprate superconductors. For hole-type cuprates, both phenomena as a function of temperature and doping level can be accounted for if the CO vanishes at $T^{\ast}$ above the superconducting transition $T_c$ and the CO wave-vector Q is parallel to the antinodal direction. In contrast, the absence of these phenomena and the non-monotonic d-wave gap in electron-type cuprates may be attributed to $T^{\ast} < T_c$ and a CO wave-vector Q parallel to the nodal direction.
In the search for mechanisms of high-temperature superconductivity it is critical to know the electronic spectrum in the pseudogap phase from which superconductivity evolves. The lack of angle-resolved photoemission data for every cuprate family precludes an agreement as to its structure, doping and temperature dependence and the role of charge ordering. Here we show that, in the entire Fermi-liquid-like regime that is ubiquitous in underdoped cuprates, the spectrum consists of holes on the Fermi arcs and an electronic pocket. We argue that experiments on the Hall coefficient identify the latt…
Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we report on the direct observation of the energy gap in 2H-NbSe2 caused by the charge-density waves (CDW). The gap opens in the regions of the momentum space connected by the CDW vectors, which implies a nesting mechanism of CDW formation. In remarkable analogy with the pseudogap in cuprates, the detected energy gap also exists in the normal state (T>T0) where it breaks the Fermi surface into 'arcs', it is non-monotonic as a function of temperature with a local minimum at the CDW transition temperature (T0) and it forestalls the superco…

Variational Monte Carlo is a many-body numerical method that scales well with system size. It has been extended to study the Green function only recently by Charlebois and Imada (2020). Here we generalize the approach to systems with open boundary conditions in the absence of translational invariance. Removing these constraints permits the application of embedding techniques like Cluster perturbation theory (CPT). This allows us to solve an enduring problem in the physics of the pseudogap in cuprate high-temperature superconductors, namely the existence or absence of Fermi arcs in the one-band…
I present an exactly solvable model of a pseudogap with two zero-energy fermion modes coupled to each other by a classical source of frequency omega_0 and strength |Delta|. A suitably defined fermion propagator has an infinite number of poles at frequencies that are multiple integers of omega_0. In the adiabatic limit, omega_0 << |Δ|, the situation is qualitatively different from the static case omega_0=0: the residue of the pole at omega=0 (a remnant of the bare fermion) vanishes linearly with omega_0, a result that could not be anticipated by perturbation theory; the multiple poles of the pr…
We propose a new parton theory of the hole-doped cuprates, describing the evolution from the pseudogap metal with small Fermi surfaces to the conventional Fermi liquid with a large Fermi surface. We introduce 2 ancilla qubits per square lattice site, and employ them to obtain a variational wavefunction of a fractionalized Fermi liquid for the pseudogap metal state. We propose a multi-layer Hamiltonion for the cuprates, with the electrons residing in the 'physical' layer, and the ancilla qubits in two 'hidden' layers: the hidden layers can be decoupled from the physical layer by a canonical tra…
Pseudogap physics in strongly correlated systems is essentially scale dependent. We generalize the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) by including into the DMFT equations dependence on correlation length of pseudogap fluctuations via additional (momentum dependent) self-energy Sigma_k. This self-energy describes non-local dynamical correlations induced by short-ranged collective SDW-like antiferromagnetic spin (or CDW-like charge) fluctuations. At high enough temperatures these fluctuations can be viewed as a quenched Gaussian random field with finite correlation length. This generalized DMFT+…
A tight-binding model for eg electrons coupled to Jahn-Teller lattice distortions is studied via unbiased Monte- Carlo simulations. By focusing on the periodicity of the Jahn Teller distortions, and the one-particle spectral function, our results clarify the physical origin of the Fermi-arcs phase observed in layered manganites. In a range of parameters where no broken symmetry phase exists, the nearly nested Fermi surface favors certain correlations between Jahn Teller distortions. The spectral weight near the Brillouin zone edge is suppressed, leading to the pseudogap in the density of state…
Lanthanum family of high-temperature cuprate superconductors is known to exhibit both spin and charge electronic modulations around doping level 1/8. We assume that these modulations have the character of two-dimensional spin-vortex checkerboard and investigate whether this assumption is consistent with the Fermi surface and the pseudogap measured by angle-resolved photo-emission spectroscopy. We also explore the possibility of observing quantum oscillations of transport coefficients in such a background. These investigations are based on a model of non-interacting spin-1/2 fermions hopping on…
We assume the t-t'-J model to describe the CuO_2 planes of hole-doped cuprates and we adapt the spin-charge gauge approach, previously developed for the t-J model, to describe the holes in terms of a spinless fermion carrying the charge (holon) and a neutral boson carrying spin 1/2 (spinon), coupled by a slave-particle gauge field. In this framework we consider the effects of a finite density of incoherent holon pairs in the normal state. Below a crossover temperature, identified as the experimental "upper pseudogap", the scattering of the "quanta" of the phase of the holon-pair field against …
From the perspective of thermal fluctuations, we investigate the pseudogap phenomena in underdoped high-temperature curpate superconductors. We present a local update Monte Carlo procedure based on the Green's function method to sample the fluctuating pairing field. The Chebyshev polynomial method is applied to calculate the single-particle spectral function directly and efficiently. The evolution of Fermi arcs as a function of temperature is studied by examining the spectral function at Fermi energy as well as the loss of spectral weight. Our results signify the importance of the vortex-like …

We present an efficient diagrammatic method to describe nonlocal correlation effects in lattice fermion Hubbard-like models, which is based on a change of variables in the Grassmann path integrals. The new fermions are dual to the original ones and correspond to weakly interacting quasiparticles in the case of strong local correlations in the Hubbard model. The method starts with dynamical mean-field theory as a zeroth-order approximation and includes non-local effects in a perturbative way. In contrast to cluster approaches, this method utilizes an exact transition to a dual set of variables.…
We present an exactly solvable spin-3/2 model defined on a pentacoordinated three-dimensional graphite lattice, which realizes a novel quantum spin liquid with second-order topology. The exact solutions are described by Majorana fermions coupled to a background $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge field, whose ground-state flux configuration gives rise to an emergent off-centered spacetime inversion symmetry. The symmetry protects topologically nontrivial band structures for the Majorana fermions, particularly including nodal-line semimetal phases with twofold topological charges: the second Stiefel-Whitney n…
The Fermi arcs are signatures of exotic states in solids because they defy conventional concept of Fermi surfaces as closed contours in momentum space. Fermi arcs were first discovered in cuprates, and caused by the pseudogap. Weyl semimetals provided another way to generate Fermi arcs by breaking either the time reversal symmetry (TRS) or inversion symmetry of a 3D Dirac semimetal, which can result in a Weyl semimetal with pairs of Weyl nodes that have opposite chirality. The bulk-boundary correspondence associated with the Chern number leads to the emergence of Fermi arcs on the boundary. He…
Two remarkable features emerge from the exact Wilsonian procedure for integrating out the high-energy scale in the Hubbard model. At low energies, the number of excitations that couple minimally to the electromagnetic gauge is less than the conserved charge, thereby implying a breakdown of Fermi liquid theory. In addition, two charge $e$ excitations emerge in the lower band, the standard projected electron and a composite entity (comprised of a hole and a charge $2e$ bosonic field) which give rise to poles and zeros of the single-particle Green function, respectively. The poles generate spectr…
