From the perspective of thermal fluctuations, we investigate the pseudogap phenomena in underdoped high-temperature curpate superconductors. We present a local update Monte Carlo procedure based on the Green's function method to sample the fluctuating pairing field. The Chebyshev polynomial method is applied to calculate the single-particle spectral function directly and efficiently. The evolution of Fermi arcs as a function of temperature is studied by examining the spectral function at Fermi energy as well as the loss of spectral weight. Our results signify the importance of the vortex-like phase fluctuation on the formation of Fermi arcs.
In this paper we present a method to compute the exact density of states induced by $N$ non magnetic impurities in a system of two dimensional Dirac fermions in the unitarity limit. We review the case of the $π$-flux phase of the Heisenberg model and also treat the disordered d-wave superconductor. In both case we find additional states in the gap with $δρ(ω) \simeq n_i/ |ω(\ln^2 |ω/Δ_0| + (π/2)^2)|$.
We propose that an extension of the exciton concept to doped Mott insulators offers a fruitful insight into challenging issues of the copper oxide superconductors. In our extension, new fermionic excitations called cofermions emerge in conjunction to generalized excitons. The cofermions hybridize with conventional quasiparticles. Then a hybridization gap opens, and is identified as the pseudogap observed in the underdoped cuprates. The resultant Fermi-surface reconstruction naturally explains a number of unusual properties of the underdoped cuprates, such as the Fermi arc and/or pocket formati…
We present scanning tunnelling spectroscopy measurements on the heavy fermion superconductor PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$. Our results show that the superconducting gap opens over a large part of the Fermi surface. The deviations from isotropic BCS s-wave behavior are discussed in terms of a finite distribution of values of the superconducting gap.
We present a detailed quantum oscillation study of the Fermi surface of the recently discovered Yb-based heavy fermion superconductor beta-YbAlB4 . We compare the data, obtained at fields from 10 to 45 Tesla, to band structure calculations performed using the local density approximation. Analysis of the data suggests that f-holes participate in the Fermi surface up to the highest magnetic fields studied. We comment on the significance of these findings for the unconventional superconducting properties of this material.
Within the phase fluctuation model for the pseudogap state of cuprate superconductors we identify a novel statistical "Berry phase" interaction between the nodal quasiparticles and fluctuating vortices. The effective action describing this model assumes the form of an anisotropic Euclidean quantum electrodynamics in (2+1) dimensions (QED_3) and naturally generates the marginal Fermi liquid behavior for its fermionic excitations. The doping axis in the x-T phase diagram emerges as a quantum critical line which regulates low energy fermiology. We examine the merits of our theory in light of avai…
A defining property of metals is the existence of a Fermi surface: for two dimensions, a continuous contour in momentum space which separates occupied from unoccupied states. In this paper, I discuss angle resolved photoemission data on the cuprate superconductor BSCCO and argue that it is not best thought of in this conventional picture. Rather, the data are consistent with ``patches'' of finite area connected by more conventional ``arcs''. Novel physics is associated with the patches, in that the states contained in a patch are dispersionless and thus interaction dominated. In the pseudogap …
We propose that a new state with a fully gapless Fermi surface appears in quasi-2D multiband superconductors in magnetic field applied parallel to the plane. It is characterized by a paramagnetic moment caused by a finite density of states on the open Fermi surface. We calculate thermodynamic and magnetic properties of the gapless state for both s-wave and d-wave cases, and discuss the details of the 1-st order metamagnetic phase transition that accompanies the appearance of the new phase in s-wave superconductors. We suggest possible experiments to detect this state both in the s-wave (2-H Nb…
We present a model of a strongly correlated system with a non-Fermi liquid high temperature phase. Its ground state undergoes an insulator to superconductor quantum phase transition (QPT) as a function of a pairing interaction strength. Both the insulator and the superconductor are originating from the same interaction mechanism. The resistivity in the insulating phase exhibits the activation behavior with the activation energy, which goes to zero at the QPT. This leads to a wide quantum critical regime with an algebraic temperature dependence of the resistivity. Upon raising the temperature i…
We report full-potential density functional theory (DFT)-based {\it ab initio} band structure calculations to investigate electronic structure properties of the first pnictide superconductor with a honeycomb-lattice structure: SrPtAs. As a result, electronic bands, density of states, Fermi velocities and the topology of the Fermi surface for SrPtAs are obtained. These quantities are discussed in comparison to the first available experimental data. Predictions for future measurements are provided.
One of the most puzzling aspects of the high $T_c$ superconductors is the appearance of Fermi arcs in the normal state of the underdoped cuprate materials. These are loci of low energy excitations covering part of the fermi surface, that suddenly appear above $T_c$ instead of the nodal quasiparticles. Based on a semiclassical theory, we argue that partial Fermi surfaces arise naturally in a d-wave superconductor that is destroyed by thermal phase fluctuations. Specifically, we show that the electron spectral function develops a square root singularity at low frequencies for wave-vectors positi…
We have investigated the de Haas-van Alphen effect in the Pr-based heavy fermion superconductor PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$.The topology of Fermi surface is close to the reference compound LaOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ and well explained by the band structure calculation based on the FLAPW-LDA+U method, where the 4{\it f} electrons are localized. We have confirmed a highly enhanced cyclotron effective mass 2.4$\sim7.6m_{\rm 0}$ which is apparently large compared to the usual Pr-based compounds.
Angle resolved photoemission experiments by Kanigel, et al (cond-mat/0605499) [Nature Physics 2, 447 (2006)] have made a remarkable observation that low energy electronic excitations in the normal state of underdoped cuprate superconductors exist on open ``Fermi arcs'' instead of a closed Fermi surface. These arcs shrink upon cooling, with the arc length appearing to extrapolate to nodal points at zero temperature. We show that this striking non-Fermi liquid behavior could result from the underdoped normal state above Tc lying in the vicinity of a quantum phase transition between a d-wave supe…
We suggest a model for electronic structure of cuprate superconductors that makes it possible to describe evolution of this structure with the doping and provides a new explanation for a number of typical features of cuprates, including the pseudogap and the Fermi arcs. According to this model, the unique electronic structure of cuprates is favorable for the formation of two-atomic negative-U centers (NUCs) and realization of a peculiar mechanism of the electron-electron interaction.
We present a pairing fluctuation theory which self-consistently incorporates finite momentum pair excitations in the context of BCS--Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) crossover, and we apply this theory to high $T_c$ superconductors and ultracold Fermi gases. There are strong similarities between Fermi gases in the unitary regime and high Tc superconductors. Here we address key issues of common interest, especially the pseudogap. In the Fermi gases we summarize recent experiments including various phase diagrams (with and without population imbalance), as well as evidence for a pseudogap in the…
The behaviour of electrons in solids is remarkably well described by Landau's Fermi-liquid theory, which says that even though electrons in a metal interact they can still be treated as well-defined fermions, called ``quasiparticles''. At low temperature, the ability of quasiparticles to transport heat is strictly given by their ability to transport charge, via a universal relation known as the Wiedemann-Franz law, which no material in nature has been known to violate. High-temperature superconductors have long been thought to fall outside the realm of Fermi-liquid theory, as suggested by seve…
We studied the influence of the amplitude fluctuations of a non-Fermi superconductor on the energy spectrum of the 2D Anderson non-Fermi system. The classical fluctuations give a temperature dependence in the pseudogap induced in the fermionic excitations.
A d-wave superconducting phase with coexisting intra-unit-cell orbital current order has the remarkable property that it supports finite size Fermi pockets of Bougoliubov quasiparticles. Experimentally detectable consequences of this include a residual $T$-linear term in the specific heat in the absence of disorder and residual features in the thermal and microwave conductivity in the low disorder limit.
The superconducting gap structure of recently discovered heavy fermion superconductor PrOs4Sb12 was investigated by using thermal transport measurements in magnetic field rotated relative to the crystal axes. We demonstrate that a novel change in the symmetry of the superconducting gap function occurs deep inside the superconducting state, giving a clear indication of the presence of two distinct superconducting phases with twofold and fourfold symmetries. We infer that the gap functions in both phases have a point node singularity, in contrast to the familiar line node singularity observed in…
The electromagnetic properties of a Fermi liquid superconductor with singular Landau parameter $F_{1s}\to-1$, corresponding to a state with marginal spin-charge separation (MSCS) is analyzed in this paper. We show that the MSCS state describes a strongly phase-disordered superconductor which is a diamagnetic metal with Drude-like optical conductivity. The phase diagram and electromagnetic properties of the MSCS state is found to be in qualitative agreement with what is observed in the pseudo-gap phase of (underdoped) High-$T_c$ cuprates. We predicted that vortices with {\em un-quantized} magne…
We study how manifestations of strong electron-phonon interaction (EPI) depend on the carrier concentration by solving the two-dimensional Holstein model for the spin-polarized fermions using an approximation free bold-line diagrammatic Monte Carlo (BDMC) method. We show that the strong EPI, obviously present at very small Fermion concentration, is masked by the Fermi blockade effects and Migdal's theorem to the extent that it manifests itself as moderate one at large carriers densities. Suppression of strong EPI fingerprints is in agreement with experimental observations in doped high tempera…
Broken fourfold rotational (C$_4$) symmetry is observed in the experimental properties of several classes of unconventional superconductors. It has been proposed that this symmetry breaking is important for superconducting pairing in these materials, but in the high superconducting transition temperature (high-T$_{\mathrm{c}}$) cuprates this broken symmetry has never been observed on the Fermi surface. We have measured a pronounced anisotropy in the angle dependence of the interlayer magnetoresistance of the underdoped high-T$_{\mathrm{c}}$) superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.58}$, directly rev…
Hidden Fermi liquid theory explicitly accounts for the effects of Gutzwiller projection in the t-J Hamiltonian, widely believed to contain the essential physics of the high-Tc superconductors. We derive expressions for the entire "strange metal", normal state relating angle-resolved photoemission, resistivity, Hall angle, and by generalizing the formalism to include the Fermi surface topology - angle-dependent magnetoresistance. We show this theory to be the first self-consistent description for the normal state of the cuprates based on transparent, fundamental assumptions. Our well-defined fo…
The effect of a quantum phase transition associated with the appearance of the fermion condensate in an electron liquid on the properties of superconductors is considered. It is shown that the electron system in both superconducting and normal states exhibits characteristic features of a quantum protectorate after the point of this fermion-condensation quantum phase transition. The single-particle spectrum of a superconductor can be represented by two straight lines corresponding to two effective masses $M^*_{FC}$ and $M^*_{L}$. The $M^*_{FC}$ mass characterizes the spectrum up to the binding …
Effects of anisotropic gap structures on a diamagnetic response are investigated in order to demonstrate that the field-angle-resolved magnetization ($M_L(χ)$) measurement can be used as a spectroscopic method to detect gap structures. Our microscopic calculation based on the quasiclassical Eilenberger formalism reveals that $M_L(χ)$ in a superconductor with four-fold gap displays a four-fold oscillation reflecting the gap and Fermi surface anisotropies, and the sign of this oscillation changes at a field between $H_{c1}$ and $H_{c2}$. As a prototype of unconventional superconductors, magnetiz…
The detailed derivation of a theory for transport in quasi-two-dimensional metals, with small-angle elastic scattering and angle-independent inelastic scattering is presented. The transport equation is solved for a model Fermi surface representing a typical cuprate superconductor. Using the small-angle elastic and the inelastic scattering rates deduced from angle-resolved photoemission experiments, good quantitative agreement with the observed anomalous temperature dependence of the Hall angle in optimally doped cuprates is obtained, while the resistivity remains linear in temperature. The the…
In this paper we study the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) equation for Fermi liquid superconductors with strong Landau interactions $F_0$ and $F_1$. We show that Landau interactions renormalize two parameters entering the GL equation leading to renormalization of superfluid density and separation of length and energy scales for amplitude and phase fluctuations. The separation of energy/length scales for amplitude and phase fluctuations in term leads to unconventional (2D) KT transition and vortex liquid phase. Application of the GL equation to describe underdoped high-$T_c$ cuprates is being discussed.
We construct a phenomenological superfluid Fermi liquid theory for a two-dimensional d-wave superconductor on a square lattice, and study the effect of quasiparticle interactions on the superfluid density. Using simple models for the dispersion and the Landau interaction function, we illustrate the deviation of these results from those for the isotropic superfluid. This allows us to reconcile the value and doping dependence of the superfluid density slope at low temperature obtained from penetration depth measurements, with photoemission data on nodal quasiparticles.
We report a first study of low energy electronic structure and Fermi surface topology for the recently discovered iron-based superconductor Ca10(Pt3As8)(Fe2As2)5 (the 10-3-8 phase, with Tc = 8K), via angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Despite its triclinic crystal structure, ARPES results reveal a fourfold symmetric band structure with the absence of Dirac-cone-like Fermi dots (related to magnetism) found around the Brillouin zone corners in other iron-based superconductors. Considering that the triclinic lattice and structural supercell arising from the Pt3As8 intermediary lay…
We report the magnetic field dependence of the low temperature specific heat of single crystals of the first Pr-based heavy fermion superconductor PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$. The low temperature specific heat and the magnetic phase diagram inferred from specific heat, resistivity and magnetisation provide compelling evidence of a doublet ground state and hence superconductivity mediated by quadrupolar fluctuations. This establishes PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ as a very strong contender of superconductive pairing that is neither electron-phonon nor magnetically mediated.
The pressure dependences of the antiferromagnetic and superconducting transition temperatures have been investigated by ac heat capacity measurement under high pressures for the heavy-fermion superconductor CePt$_3$Si without inversion symmetry in the tetragonal structure. The Néel temperature $T_{\rm N}$ = 2.2 K decreases with increasing pressure and becomes zero at the critical pressure $P_{\rm AF}$ $\simeq$ 0.6 GPa. On the other hand, the superconducting phase exists in a wider pressure region from ambient pressure to about 1.5 GPa. The pressure phase diagram of CePt$_3$Si is thus very uniq…
A model of a Fermi liquid with the fermion condensate (FC) is applied to the consideration of quasiparticle excitations in high temperature superconductors, in their superconducting and normal states. Within our model the appearance of the fermion condensate presents a quantum phase transition, that separates the regions of normal and strongly correlated electron liquids. Beyond the phase transition point the quasiparticle system is divided into two subsystems, one containing normal quasiparticles and the other --- fermion condensate localized at the Fermi surface and characterized by almost d…
We use magnetic quantum oscillations in the underdoped high Tc superconductor YBa_2Cu_3O_(6+x) (x=0.56) measured over a broad range of temperatures 100 mK<T<18 K to extract the form of the distribution function describing the low-lying quasiparticle excitations in high magnetic fields. Despite the proximity of YBa_2Cu_3O_(6+x) (x=0.56) to a Mott insulating state, various broken symmetry ground states and/or states with different quasiparticle statistics, we find that our experimental results can be understood in terms of quasiparticle excitations obeying Fermi-Dirac statistics as in the Landau…
We report on the direct probing of the Fermi surface in the bulk of the electron-doped superconductor Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ at different doping levels by means of magnetoresistance quantum oscillations. Our data reveal a sharp qualitative change in the Fermi surface topology, due to translational symmetry breaking in the electronic system which occurs at a critical doping level significantly exceeding the optimal doping. This result implies that the $(π/a,π/a)$ ordering, known to exist at low doping levels, survives up to the overdoped superconducting regime.
The self-organized dopant percolative filamentary model, entirely orbital in character (no fictive spins), explains the evolution with doping of Fermi arcs observed by ARPES, including the previously unexplained abrupt transitions in quasiparticle strength observed near optimal doping in cuprate high temperature superconductors. Similarly abrupt transitions are also observed in time-resolved picosecond relaxation spectroscopy at 1.5 eV, and these are explained as well, using no new assumptions and no adjustable parameters.
We study underdoped high-Tc superconductors YBa2Cu3O6.5 and YBa2Cu4O8 using first-principles pseudopotential methods with additional Coulomb interactions at the Cu atoms, and obtain Fermi-surface pocket areas in close agreement with measured Shubnikov-de Haas and de Haas-van Alphen oscillations. With antiferromagnetic order in CuO2 planes, stable in the calculations, small hole pockets are formed near the so-called Fermi-arc positions in the Brillouin zone which reproduce the low-frequency oscillations. A large electron pocket, necessary for the negative Hall coefficient, is also formed in YBa…
We consider a model self-energy consisting of an isotropic Fermi liquid term and a Marginal Fermi liquid term which is anisotropic over the Fermi surface, vanishing in the same directions as the superconducting gap and the pseudogap. This model self-energy gives a consistent description of experimental results from Angle-Dependent Magneto-Resistance (ADMR), specific heat, de Haas-van Alphen, and measurements of the quasi-particle dispersion near the Fermi surface from photoemission. In particular, we reconcile the strongly doping dependent anomalous scattering rate observed in ADMR with the al…
In high transition temperature (T_c) superconductivity, charge doping is a natural tuning parameter that takes copper oxides from the antiferromagnet to the superconducting region. In the metallic state above T_c the standard Landau's Fermi-liquid theory of metals as typified by the temperature squared (T^2) dependence of resistivity appears to break down. Whether the origin of the non-Fermi-liquid behavior is related to physics specific to the cuprates is a fundamental question still under debate. We uncover a new transformation from the non-Fermi- to a standard Fermi-liquid state driven not …
The angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy studies on cuprates in the pseudogap region reveal an extraordinary topological transition in which the ground state changes from one with a normal Fermi surface to one with four Fermi points. Such a state is not possible without some symmetry breaking, which allows interference between one-particle basis states that is normally forbidden. We also show that the experimental results are quantitatively given without any free parameters by a theory and discuss the implications of the results.
Infrared (20-120 cm-1 and 900-1100 cm-1) Faraday rotation and circular dichroism are measured in high Tc superconductors using sensitive polarization modulation techniques. Optimally doped YBCO thin films are studied at temperatures down to 15 K and magnetic fields up to 8 T. At 1000 cm-1 the Hall conductivity varies strongly with temperature in contrast to the longitudinal conductivity which is nearly independent of temperature. The Hall scattering rate has a T^2 temperature dependence but, unlike a Fermi liquid, depends only weakly on frequency. The experiment puts severe constraints on theo…
High resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements have been carried out to study the electronic structure and superconducting gap of the (Tl$_{0.58}$Rb$_{0.42}$)Fe$_{1.72}$Se$_2$ superconductor with a T$_c$=32 K. The Fermi surface topology consists of two electron-like Fermi surface sheets around $Γ$ point which is distinct from that in all other iron-based compounds reported so far. The Fermi surface around the M point shows a nearly isotropic superconducting gap of $\sim$12 meV. The large Fermi surface near the $Γ$ point also shows a nearly isotropic superconducting gap of $\sim$15 m…
Properties of strongly correlated two-dimensional (2D) electron systems in solids are studied on the assumption that these systems undergo a phase transition, called fermion condensation, whose characteristic feature is flattening of the electron spectrum $ε({\pf p})$. Unlike the previous models in the present study, the decay of single-particle states is properly taken into account. Remarkably, the value of the topological charge ($N=1/2$) remains unchanged, supporting the view that systems with a fermion condensate form a separate class of Fermi liquids. Results of calculations are found to …
In the pseudogap state of the high-Tc copper-oxide (cuprate) superconductors, angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) measurements have seen an Fermi arc, i.e., an open-ended gapless section in the large Fermi surface, rather than a closed loop expected of an ordinary metal. This is all the more puzzling because Fermi pockets (small closed Fermi surface features) have been suggested from recent quantum oscillation measurements. The Fermi arcs have worried the high-Tc community for many years because they cannot be understood in terms of existing theories. Theorists came up with a way out in the f…
We report on semiclassical angle-dependent magnetoresistance oscillations (AMRO) and the Shubnikov-de Haas effect in the electron-overdoped cuprate superconductor Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$. Our data provide convincing evidence for magnetic breakdown in the system. This shows that a reconstructed multiply-connected Fermi surface persists, at least at strong magnetic fields, up to the highest doping level of the superconducting regime. Our results suggest an intimate relation between translational symmetry breaking and the superconducting pairing in the electron-doped cuprate superconductors.
The electronic structure of electron doped iron-arsenide superconductors Ba(Fe1- xCox)2As2 has been measured with Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy. The data reveal a marked photon energy dependence of points in momentum space where the bands cross the Fermi energy, a distinctive and direct signature of three-dimensionality in the Fermi surface topology. By providing a unique example of high temperature superconductivity hosted in layered compounds with three-dimensional electronic structure, these findings suggest that the iron-arsenides are unique materials, quite different from the …
The thermal conductivity of the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn_5 has been studied in a magnetic field rotating within the 2D planes. A clear fourfold symmetry of the thermal conductivity which is characteristic of a superconducting gap with nodes along the (+-pi,+-pi)-directions is resolved. The thermal conductivity measurement also reveals a first order transition at H_c2, indicating a Pauli limited superconducting state. These results indicate that the symmetry most likely belongs to d_{x^2-y^2}, implying that the anisotropic antiferromagnetic fluctuation is relevant to the superconduct…
We present different transport measurements up to fields of 29~T in the recently discovered heavy-fermion superconductor UTe$_{2}$ with magnetic field $H$ applied along the easy magnetization a-axis of the body-centered orthorhombic structure. The thermoelectric power varies linearly with temperature above the superconducting transition, $T_{SC}= 1.5$ K, indicating that superconductivity develops in a Fermi liquid regime. As a function of field the thermolelectric power shows successive anomalies which are attributed to field-induced Fermi surface instabilities. These Fermi-surface instabiliti…
This article develops a Fermi-liquid theory for superconductors with anisotropic Fermi surfaces, Fermi-liquid interactions, and energy gaps. For d-wave superconductors, the Fermi-liquid interaction effects are found to be classifiable into strong and negligible renormalizaton effects, for symmetric and antisymmetric combinations of the energies of $k\uparrow$ and $-k\downarrow$ quasiparticles, respectively. Furthermore, the leading clean-limit temperature-dependent correction to the superfluid density in a d-wave superconductor is found to be renormalized by a Fermi velocity (or mass) renormal…
We report intimate relations between topological properties of full gapped spin-triplet superconductors with time-reversal invariance and the Fermi surface topology in the normal states. An efficient method to calculate the Z2 invariants and the winding number for the spin-triplet superconductors is developed, and connections between these topological invariants and the Fermi surface structures in the normal states are pointed out. We also obtain a correspondence between the Fermi surface topology and gapless surface states in the superconducting states. The correspondence is inherent to spin-…
We calculate the dynamic vortex mass for clean Fermi superfluids including both s- and d-wave superconductors as a response to a vortex acceleration. Assuming a finite quasiparticle mean free time, the vortex mass appears to be a tensor. The diagonal component dominates in the limit of long mean free time while the off-diagonal mass takes over in the moderately clean regime.
In this review article we consider theoretically and give experimental support to the models of the Fermi-Bose mixtures and the BCS-BEC crossover compared with the strong-coupling approach, which can serve as the cornerstones on the way from high-temperature to room-temperature superconductivity in pressurized metallic hydrides. We discuss some key theoretical ideas and mechanisms proposed for unconventional superconductors (cuprates, pnictides, chalcogenides, bismuthates, diborides, heavy-fermions, organics, bilayer graphene, twisted graphene, oxide hetero-structures), superfluids and balance…
The origin of superconductivity in bulk SrTiO$_{3}$ is a mystery, since the non-monotonous variation of the critical transition with carrier concentration defies the expectations of the crudest version of the BCS theory. Here, employing the Nernst effect, an extremely sensitive probe of tiny bulk Fermi surfaces, we show that down to concentrations as low as $5.5 \times 10^{17}cm^{-3}$, the system has both a sharp Fermi surface and a superconducting ground state. The most dilute superconductor currently known has therefore a metallic normal state with a Fermi energy as little as 1.1 meV on top …
A time reversal invariant (TRI) topological superconductor has a full pairing gap in the bulk and topologically protected gapless states on the surface or at the edge. In this paper, we show that in the weak pairing limit, the topological quantum number of a TRI superconductor can be completely determined by the Fermi surface properties, and is independent of the electronic structure away from the Fermi surface. In three dimensions (3D), the integer topological quantum number in a TRI superconductor is determined by the sign of the pairing order parameter and the first Chern number of the Berr…
By means of first-principles calculations? we have probed the peculiarities of the elecrtonic band structure and Fermi surface for the recently discovered layered superconductor LaO0.5F0.5BiSi2 in comparison with the parent phase LaOBiO2. The electronic factors prpmoting the transition of LaOBiS2 upon fluorine doping to superconducting state: inter-layer charge transfer, the evolution of the Fermi surface, and the dependence of the near-Fermi densities of states on x for LaO1-xFxBiS2 are evaluated and discussed in comparison with the available experiments.
We report a systematic study of temperature- and field-dependent charge ($\boldsymbolρ$) and entropy ($\mathbf{S}$) transport in the heavy-fermion superconductor CeIrIn$_5$. Its large positive thermopower $S_{xx}$ is typical of Ce-based Kondo lattice systems, and strong electronic correlations play an important role in enhancing the Nernst signal $S_{xy}$. By separating the off-diagonal Peltier coefficient $α_{xy}$ from $S_{xy}$, we find that $α_{xy}$ becomes positive and greatly enhanced at temperatures well above the bulk $T_c$. Compared with the non-magnetic analog LaIrIn$_5$, these results…
Fermiology of various 122 systems are studied through first principles simulation. Electron doping causes expansion of electron and shrinkage of hole Fermi pockets. Isovalent Ru substitution (upto 35%) makes no visible modification in the electron and hole like FSs providing no clue regarding the nature of charge carrier doping. However, in case of 32% P doping there are considerable changes in the hole Fermi surfaces (FSs). From our calculations, it is very clear that two dimensionality of FSs may favour electron pair scattering between quasi-nested FSs which has important bearings in various…
In this paper we study a model of s-wave marginal Fermi liquid superconductor at two dimensions. Besides the usual Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer(BCS) point attractive interaction, the fermions in our system also interact {\em via} a long range repulsive interaction $v(q)=g_{D}/q^2$. We find that although superconductivity is not destroyed by the long-ranged repulsion interaction (demonstrated by the existence of Meissner effect), nevertheless the BCS pairing function $Δ_{BCS}$ is strongly suppressed resulting in power-law correlation $<Δ_{BCS}(\vec{x})Δ_{BCS}(0)>\sim|\vec{x}|^{-2γ}$. This observat…
We measured the Fermi surface of the recently discovered superconductor Ag5Pb2O6 via a de Haas-van Alphen rotation study. Two frequency branches were observed and identified with the neck and belly orbits of a very simple, nearly free electron Fermi surface. We use the observed Fermi surface geometry to quantitatively deduce superconducting properties such as the in-plane and out-of-plane penetration depths, the coherence length in the clean limit, and the critical field; as well as normal state properties such as the specific heat and the resistivity anisotropy.
We show that time-reversal invariant superconductors in d=2 (d=3) dimensions can support topologically stable Fermi points (lines), characterized by an integer topological charge. Combining this with the momentum space symmetries present, we prove analogs of the fermion doubling theorem: for d=2 lattice models admitting a spin X electron-hole structure, the number of Fermi points is a multiple of four, while for d=3, Fermi lines come in pairs. We show two implications of our findings for topological superconductors in d=3: first, we relate the bulk topological invariant to a topological number…
We address the origin of the recently discovered close correspondence between the charge ordering wave vectors and the momentum-space separation between the tips of the Fermi arcs seen in angle-resolved photoemission measurements in underdoped high temperature superconducting cuprates. We calculate the Fermi surface spectral weight for a charge density-wave model, assuming a Fermi surface, charge ordering wave vectors and short correlation lengths similar to those found experimentally. We show that the observation of wavevectors spanning the tips of remnant Fermi surface sections signal Fermi …
