An electron spin resonance (ESR) study of the heavy fermion compound YbRh2Si2 for fields up to ~ 8 T reveals a strongly anisotropic signal below the single ion Kondo temperature T_K ~ 25 K. A remarkable similarity between the T-dependence of the ESR parameters and that of the specific heat and the 29Si nuclear magnetic resonance data gives evidence that the ESR response is given by heavy fermions which are formed below T_K and that ESR properties are determined by their field dependent mass and lifetime. The signal anisotropy, otherwise typical for Yb{3+} ions, suggests that, owing to a strong hybridization with conduction electrons at T < T_K, the magnetic anisotropy of the 4f states is absorbed in the ESR of heavy quasiparticles. Tuning the Kondo effect on the 4f states with magnetic fields ~ 2 - 8 T and temperature 2 - 25 K yields a gradual change of the ESR g-factor and linewidth which reflects the evolution of the Kondo state in this Kondo lattice system.
Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) measurements of the ferromagnetic Kondo lattice system CeRuPO show a well defined ESR signal which is related to the magnetic properties of the Ce3+ moment. In contrast, no ESR signal could be observed in the antiferromagnetic homologue CeOsPO. Additionally, we detect an ESR signal in a further ferromagnetic Yb compound, YbRh, while it was absent in a number of Ce or Yb intermetallic compounds with dominant antiferromagnetic exchange, independently of the presence of a strong Kondo interaction or the proximity to a (quantum) critical point. Thus, the observation o…
Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) can microscopically probe both conduction electrons (ce) and local moment (LM) spin systems in different materials. A ce spin resonance (CESR) is observed in metallic systems based on light elements or with enhanced Pauli susceptibility. LM ESR is frequently seen in compounds with paramagnetic ions and localized d or f electrons. Here we report a remarkable and unprecedented ESR signal in the heavy fermion (HF) superconductor beta-YbAlB4[1] which behaves as a CESR at high temperatures and acquires characteristics of the Yb3+ LM ESR at low temperature. This dual be…
Below a characteristic temperature, due to hybridisation effects Kondo insulators exhibit a gap in the electronic density of states and behave like semiconductors. By using Gd3+ electron spin resonance (ESR), the compound CeNiSn was investigated as a representative of this class. In addition, the metal-to-insulator transition was studied as a function of doping for CeNi(1-x)Co(x)Sn and CeNi(1-y)Pt(y)Sn. The linewidth of the Gd resonance yields direct information about the density of states at the Fermi energy. So the size of the gap can clearly be estimated for the pure compound, and the closi…
Experiments on the $Gd^{3+}$ Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) in the filled skutterudite $Ce_{1-x}Gd_{x}Fe_{4}P_{12}$ ($x \approx 0.001$), at temperatures where the host resistivity manifests a smooth insulator-metal crossover, provides evidence of the underlying Kondo physics associated with this system. At low temperatures (below $T \approx K$), $Ce_{1-x}Gd_{x}Fe_{4}P_{12}$ behaves as a Kondo-insulator with a relatively large hybridization gap, and the $Gd^{3+}$ ESR spectra displays a fine structure with lorentzian line shape, typical of insulating media. The electronic gap is attributed to the…
We develop a theoretical basis for understanding the spin relaxation processes in Kondo lattice systems with heavy fermions as experimentally observed by electron spin resonance (ESR). The Kondo effect leads to a common energy scale that regulates a logarithmic divergence of different spin kinetic coefficients and supports a collective spin motion of the Kondo ions with conduction electrons. We find that the relaxation rate of a collective spin mode is greatly reduced due to a mutual cancelation of all the divergent contributions even in the case of the strongly anisotropic Kondo interaction. …
Below the Kondo temperature $T_{\rm K}$ electron spin resonance (ESR) usually is not observable from the Kondo-ion itself because the characteristic spin fluctuation energy results in a huge width of the ESR line. The heavy fermion metal YbRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ seems to be an exceptional case where definite ESR spectra show characteristic properties of the Kondo-ion Yb$^{3+}$ well \textit{below} $T_{\rm K}$. We found that the spin dynamics of YbRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$, as determined by its ESR relaxation, is spatially characterized by an anisotropy of the zero temperature residual relaxation only.
We present electron spin resonance data of Ti$^{3+}$ (3$d^1$) ions in single crystals of the novel layered quantum spin magnet TiOCl. The analysis of the g tensor yields direct evidence that the d_{xy} orbital from the t_{2g} set is predominantly occupied and owing to the occurrence of orbital order a linear spin chain forms along the crystallographic b axis. This result corroborates recent theoretical LDA+U calculations of the band structure. The temperature dependence of the parameters of the resonance signal suggests a strong coupling between spin and lattice degrees of freedom and gives ev…
The spin dynamics of the ferromagnetic Kondo lattice CeRuPO is investigated by Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) at microwave frequencies of 1, 9.4, and 34~GHz. The measured resonance can be ascribed to a rarely observed bulk Ce3+ resonance in a metallic Ce compound and can be followed below the ferromagnetic transition temperature Tc=14 K. At T>Tc the interplay between the RKKY-exchange interaction and the crystal electric field anisotropy determines the ESR parameters. Near Tc the spin relaxation rate is influenced by the critical fluctuations of the order parameter.
A model of spin relaxation in Kondo lattices is proposed to explain the presence of an electron spin resonance (ESR) signal in the heavy fermion compounds YbRh2Si2 and YbIr2Si2. Coupled equations for dynamical susceptibilities of Kondo ions and conduction electrons are derived by means of the functional derivative method. The perturbational scaling approach reveals the collective spin motion of Yb ions with conduction electrons in the bottleneck regime. A common energy scale due to the Kondo effect regulates the temperature dependence of the different kinetic coefficients and results in a mutu…
The predicted interplay between Kondo physics and non-trivial topology in SmB$_{6}$ has stimulated many experimental reports, some of which are in apparent contradiction. The origin of the dispute may lie on the fragility of the Kondo insulating phase in the presence of Sm vacancies (Kondo holes) and/or natural impurities, such as Gd$^{3+}$. In this work, we locally investigated this fragility for Al-flux grown Sm$_{1-x}$Gd$_{x}$B$_{6}$ single crystals (0 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 0.02) by combining electron spin resonance (ESR) and complementary bulk measurements. The Gd$^{3+}$ ESR spectra in a highl…
We report an experimental study of the static magnetization $M(H,T)$ and high-field electron spin resonance (ESR) of polycrystalline \MgGd, a representative member of the newly discovered class of the so-called tripod-kagome antiferromagnets where the isotropic Gd$^{3+}$ spins ($S = 7/2$) form a two-dimensional kagome spin-frustrated lattice. It follows from the analysis of the low-$T$ $M(H)$-curves that the Gd$^{3+}$ spins are coupled by a small isotropic antiferromagnetic (AFM) exchange interaction $|J| \approx$ 0.3\,K. The $M(H,T)$-dependences measured down to 0.5\,K evidence a long-range A…
Below the Kondo temperature the heavy Fermion compound YbRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ shows a well defined Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) with local Yb$^{3+}$ properties. We report a detailed analysis of the ESR intensity which gives information on the number of ESR active centers relative to the ESR of well localized Yb$^{3+}$ in YPd$_3$:Yb. The ESR lineshape is investigated regarding contributions from itinerant centers. From the ESR of monoisotopic $^{174}$YbRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ we could exclude unresolved hyperfine contributions to the lineshape.
We investigated the paramagnetic resonance in single crystals of LiCuVO$_4$ with special attention to the angular variation of the absorption spectrum. To explain the large resonance linewidth of the order of 1 kOe, we analyzed the anisotropic exchange interaction in the chains of edge-sharing CuO$_6$ octahedra, taking into account the ring-exchange geometry of the nearest-neighbor coupling via two symmetric rectangular Cu-O bonds. The exchange parameters, which can be estimated from theoretical considerations, nicely agree with the parameters obtained from the angular dependence of the linewi…
We present the field and temperature behavior of the narrow Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) response in YbRh2Si2 well below the single ion Kondo temperature. The ESR g factor reflects a Kondo-like field and temperature evolution of the Yb3+ magnetism. Measurements towards low temperatures (>0.5K) have shown distinct crossover anomalies of the ESR parameters upon approaching the regime of a well defined heavy Fermi liquid. Comparison with the field dependence of specific heat and electrical resistivity reveal that the ESR parameters can be related to quasiparticle mass and cross section and, henc…
We calculate the dynamical spin response of Kondo impurity and Kondo lattice systems within a semiphenomenological Fermi liquid description, at low temperatures $T<T_K$, the Kondo temperature, and low magnetic fields $B \ll k_B T_K/gμ_B$. Fermi liquid parameters are determined by comparison (i) with microscopic theory (numerical renormalization group) for the impurity model and (ii) with experiment for the lattice model. We find in the impurity case that the true impurity spin resonance has a width of the order of $T_K$ and disappears altogether if the $g$-factors of impurity spin and conducti…
The interplay between non-trivial topological states of matter and strong electronic correlations is one of the most compelling open questions in condensed matter physics. Due to experimental challenges, there is an increasing desire to find more microscopic techniques to complement the results of more traditional experiments. In this work, we locally explore the Kondo insulator Sm$_{1-x}$Gd$_{x}$B$_{6}$ by means of electron spin resonance (ESR) of Gd$^{3+}$ ions at low temperatures. Our analysis reveals that the Gd$^{3+}$ ESR line shape shows an anomalous evolution as a function of temperatur…
[published in Phys. Rev. B 85, 035119 (2012)] The evolution of spin dynamics from the quantum critical system YbRh2Si2 to the stable trivalent Yb system YbCo2Si2 was investigated by Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. While the Kondo temperature changes by one order of magnitude, all compositions of the single crystalline series Yb(Rh1-xCox)2Si2 show well defined ESR spectra with a clear Yb3+ character for temperatures below \approx 20 K. With increasing Co-content the ESR g-factor along the c-direction strongly increases indicating a continuous change of the ground state wave function…
We theoretically analyze a state-of-the-art experimental method based on a combination of electron spin resonance and scanning tunneling microscopy (ESR-STM), to directly probe the spin fluctuations in the Kondo effect. The Kondo impurity is exchange coupled to the probe spin, and the ESR-STM setup detects the small level shifts in the probe spin induced by the spin fluctuations of the Kondo impurity. We use the open quantum system approach by regarding the probe spin as the "system" and the Kondo impurity spin as the fluctuating "bath" to evaluate the resonance line shifts in terms of the dyn…
By developing a simple scaling theory for the effect of Hund's interactions on the Kondo effect, we show how an exponential narrowing of the Kondo resonance develops in magnetic ions with large Hund's interaction. Our theory predicts an exponential reduction of the Kondo temperature with spin S of the Hund's coupled moment, a little-known effect first observed in d-electron alloys in the 1960's, and more recently encountered in numerical calculations on multi-band Hubbard models with Hund's interactions. We discuss the consequences of Kondo resonance narrowing for the Mott transition in d-band…
The electron spin resonance absorption spectrum of Eu^{2+} ions serves as a probe of the normal and superconducting state in Eu_{0.5}K_{0.5}Fe_2As_2. The spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1^{\rm ESR} obtained from the ESR linewidth exhibits a Korringa-like linear increase with temperature above T_C evidencing a normal Fermi-liquid behavior. Below 45 K deviations from the Korringa-law occur which are ascribed to enhanced magnetic fluctuations within the FeAs layers upon approaching the superconducting transition. Below T_C the spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1^{\rm ESR} follows a T^{1.5}-behavi…
Strongly correlated materials are characterized by the presence of electron-electron interactions in their electronic structure. They often have remarkable properties and transitions between competing phases of very different electronic and magnetic order. This thesis focuses on strongly correlated $f$-electron compounds containing Ce, Sm, and U. These materials exhibit a so-called heavy-fermion or Kondo-lattice behavior. They can become insulating due to hybridization effects (Kondo-insulator) or develop multipolar (hidden) order. Kondo insulators have recently been discussed in the context o…
We measure the current and shot noise in a quantum dot (QD) in the Kondo regime to address the non-equilibrium properties of the Kondo effect. By systematically tuning the temperature and gate voltages to define the level positions in the QD, we observe an enhancement of the shot noise as temperature decreases below the Kondo temperature, which indicates that the two-particle scattering process grows as the Kondo state evolves. Below the Kondo temperature, the Fano factor defined at finite temperature is found to exceed the expected value of unity from the non-interacting model, reaching $1.8 …
The study of nuclear magnetic resonance and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation was conducted in an asymmetrically doped to $n\sim1.8\times10^{11}$ cm$^{-2}$ 16 nm AlAs quantum well grown in the $[001]$-direction. Dynamic polarization of nuclear spins due to the hyperfine interaction resulted in the so-called Overhauser shift of the two-dimensional conduction electron spin resonance. The maximum shifts achieved in the experiments are several orders of magnitude smaller than in GaAs-based heterostructures indicating that hyperfine interaction is weak. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation time extrac…
Quantum criticality in Yb(Rh0.97Co0.03)2Si2 is investigated by means of resistivity and magnetoresistance. The partial substitution of Co leads to a stabilization of the magnetism as expected according to the application of chemical pressure for Yb systems. However, the signature of the Kondo-breakdown remains at the same position in the temperature-magnetic field phase diagram compared to stoichiometric YbRh2Si2. As a consequence, the Kondo-breakdown is situated within the antiferromagnetic phase. These results fit well within the global phase diagram under chemical pressure [1].
We consider the theory of Kondo effect and Fano factor energy dependence for magnetic impurity (Co) on graphene. We have performed a first principles calculation and find that the two dimensional $E_1$ representation made of $d_{xz},d_{yz}$ orbitals is likely to be responsible for the hybridization and ultimately Kondo screening for cobalt on graphene. There are few high symmetry sites where magnetic impurity atom can be adsorbed. For the case of Co atom in the middle of hexagon of carbon lattice we find anomalously large Fano $q$-factor, $q\approx 80$ and strongly suppressed coupling to condu…
The heavy fermion metal β-YbAlB4 exhibits a bulk room temperature conduction electron ESR signal which evolves into an Ising-anisotropic f-electron signal exhibiting hyperfine features at low temperatures. We develop a theory for this phenomenon based on the development of resonant scattering off a periodic array of Kondo centers. We show that the hyperfine structure arises from the scattering off the Yb atoms with non zero nuclear spin, while the constancy of the ESR intensity is a consequence of the presence of CEF excitations of the order of the hybridization strength.
This work reports on the temperature dependence of the electron spin resonance (ESR) of Gd$^{3+}$-doped SmB$_{6}$ single crystals at X- and Q-band microwave frequencies in different crystallographic directions. We found an anomalous inhomogeneous broadening of the Gd$^{3+}$ ESR linewidth ($ΔH$) within 5.3 K $\leq T \leq$ 12.0 K which is attributed to slow crystalline electric field (CEF) fluctuations, slower than the timescale of the ESR microwave frequencies used ($\sim$10 GHz). This linewidth inhomogeneity may be associated to the coupling of the Gd$^{3+}$ $S$-states to the breathing mode of…
Cu(C$_8$H$_6$N$_2$)Cl$_2$, a strong-rung spin-1/2 Heisenberg ladder compound, is probed by means of electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy in the field-induced gapless phase above $H_{c1}$. The temperature dependence of the ESR linewidth is analyzed in the quantum field theory framework, suggesting that the anisotropy of magnetic interactions plays a crucial role, determining the peculiar low-temperature ESR linewidth behavior. In particular, it is argued that the uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (which is allowed on the bonds along the ladder legs) can be the source of this behav…
We measure the quasiparticle weight in the heavy-fermion compound CeCu$_{6-x}$Au$_{x}$ ($x=0,\ 0.1$) by time-resolved THz spectroscopy for temperatures from 2 up to 300\,K. This method distinguishes contributions from the heavy Kondo band and from the crystal-electric-field satellite bands by different THz response delay times. We find that the formation of heavy bands is controlled by an exponentially enhanced, high-energy Kondo scale once the crystal-electric-field states become thermally occupied. We corroborate these observations by temperature-dependent dynamical mean-field calculations f…
In heavy fermions the relaxation dynamics of photoexcited carriers has been found to be governed by the low energy indirect gap, E$_{g}$, resulting from hybridization between localized moments and conduction band electrons. Here, carrier relaxation dynamics in a prototype Kondo insulator YbB${}_{12}$ is studied over large range of temperatures and over three orders of magnitude. We utilize the intrinsic non-linearity of dynamics to quantitatively determine microscopic parameters, such as electron-hole recombination rate. The extracted value reveals that hybridization is accompanied by a strong…
The effective mass probed by the de Haas-van Alphen oscillations is studied for a model Ce system under magnetic field higher than the Kondo energy. In the mean-field theory, the mass enhancement per Ce ion in the periodic system is identical with that in the dilute system. With decreasing magnetic field, the effective mass tends to diverge corresponding to a formation of the Kondo ground state. The effective mass can be very different between up and down spins depending on the nature of the 4f wave functions.
A detailed $^{31}$P (I=1/2) and $^{75}$As (I=3/2) NMR study on polycrystalline CeFeAs$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$O alloys is presented. The magnetism of CeFeAsO changes drastically upon P substitution on the As site. CeFePO is a heavy fermion system without long range order whereas CeFeAsO exhibits a Fe-3$d$ SDW type of ordering accompanied by a structural transition from tetragonal ($TT$) to orthorhombic ($OT$) structure. Furthermore Ce-4$f^{1}$ orders antiferromagnetically (AFM) at low temperature. At the critical concentration where the Fe-magnetism is diminished the Ce-Ce interaction changes to a ferro…
We fully support the interpretation of Prof. F. Steglich, reported recently in Phys. Rev. Lett. 91 (2003)156401, that the observed \textit{below} Kondo temperature, Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) in a heavy fermion metal YbRh2Si2 is associated with the Yb3+ moment, more exactly with the strongly-correlated 4f13 configuration. We derived the ground-state eigenfunction Gamma_7^1= 0.803|\pm 3/2>+ 0.595|\mp 5/2> - 0.026|\mp 1/2> - 0.008|\pm 7/2> and crystal field parameters: B20= +14 K, B40= +60 mK, B60= -0.5 mK, B44= -2.23 K and B64= -10 mK with a small orthorhombic distortion B22= +0.23 K, that p…
We report on the muon Knight shift measurement in single crystals of LiV2O4. Contrary to what is anticipated for the heavy-fermion state based on the Kondo mechanism, the presence of inhomogeneous local magnetic moments is demonstrated by the broad distribution of the Knight shift at temperatures well below the presumed "Kondo temperature" ($T^*\simeq 30$ K). Moreover, a significant fraction ($\simeq10$ %) of the specimen gives rise to a second component which is virtually non-magnetic. These observations strongly suggest that the anomalous properties of LiV2O4 originates from frustration of l…
We provide the microscopic explanation for the localized f state observed in a heavy fermion metal YbRh2Si2 by Prof. F. Steglich's group, reported recently in Phys. Rev. Lett. 91 (2003) 156401, as associated with the strongly-correlated 4f13 configuration of the Yb atom. We derived to ground-state eigenfunctions that perfectly reproduce the observed ESR values of g_perp=3.561 and g_par =0.17: 1) G_7^1 =0.803|+-3/2> +0.595|-+5/2>-0.026|-+1/2>-0.008|+-7/2> (crystal field parameters: B_2^0 = +14K, B_4^0 = +60 mK, B_6^0 = -0.5 mK, B_4^4 = -2.3 K, B_6^4 = -10 mK with a small orthorhombic distortion…
The current $I$ through nickelocene molecules and its noise are measured with a low temperature scanning tunneling microscope on a Cu(100) substrate. Density functional theory calculations and many-body modeling are used to analyze the data. During contact formation, two types of current evolution are observed, an abrupt jump to contact and a smooth transition. These data along with conductance spectra ($dI/dV$) recorded deep in the contact range are interpreted in terms of a transition from a spin-1 to a spin-1/2 state that is Kondo screened. Many-body calculations show that the smooth transi…
Magnetic excitations in the spin-ladder material (C$_5$H$_{12}$N)$_2$CuBr$_4$ [BPCB] are probed by high-resolution multi-frequency electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. Our experiments provide a direct evidence for a biaxial anisotropy ($\sim 5\%$ of the dominant exchange interaction), that is in contrast to a fully isotropic spin-ladder model employed for this system previously. It is argued that this anisotropy in BPCB is caused by spin-orbit coupling, which appears to be important for describing magnetic properties of this compound. The zero-field zone-center gap in the excitation spe…
Spin susceptibility of stabilized δphase in the Pu-Ga alloy is studied by measuring {69,71}^Ga NMR spectra and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate {69}T_{1}^{-1} in the temperature range 5 - 350 K. The shift ({69}^K) of the {69,71}^Ga NMR line and {69}^T_{1}^{-1} are controlled correspondingly by the static and the fluctuating in time parts of local magnetic field arisen at nonmagnetic gallium due to transferred hyperfine coupling with the nearest f electron environment of the more magnetic Pu. The nonmonotonic with a maximum around 150 K behavior of {69}^K(T) χ_{s,5f}(T) is attributed to the…
It is shown that the presence of the Majorana fermion edge states along the perimeter of a topological superconductor can be probed using an interacting quantum dot coupled to three terminals: two spin-polarized (ferromagnetic) leads and one lead supporting the Majorana edge states. The hybridization with the Majorana states induces a particular type of the Kondo effect with non-Fermi-liquid properties which can be detected by performing linear conductance measurements between the source and drain normal leads: the temperature dependence of the conductance is characteristically different from …
Detailed $^{195}$Pt- and $^{171}$Yb nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies on the heterogeneous mixed valence system YbPtGe$_2$ are reported. The temperature dependence of the $^{195}$Pt-NMR shift $^{195}K(T)$ indicates the opening of an unusual magnetic gap below 200\,K. $^{195}K(T)$ was analyzed by a thermal activation model which yields an isotropic gap $Δ/k_B \approx 200$\,K. In contrast, the spin-lattice relaxation rate $^{195}$($1/T_1$) does not provide evidence for the gap. Therefore, an intermediate-valence picture is proposed while a Kondo-insulator scenario can be excluded. Moreove…
Recently, evidence for a conducting surface state below 19 K was reported for the correlated d-electron small gap semiconductor FeSi. In the work reported herein, the conducting surface state and the bulk phase of FeSi were probed via electrical resistivity measurements as a function of temperature T, magnetic field B to 60 T and pressure P to 7.6 GPa, and by means of a magnetic field modulated microwave spectroscopy (MFMMS) technique. The properties of FeSi were also compared to those of the Kondo insulator SmB6 to address the question of whether FeSi is a d-electron analogue of an f-electron…
The heavy electron Kondo liquid is an emergent state of condensed matter that displays universal behavior independent of material details. Properties of the heavy electron liquid are best probed by NMR Knight shift measurements, which provide a direct measure of the behavior of the heavy electron liquid that emerges below the Kondo lattice coherence temperature as the lattice of local moments hybridizes with the background conduction electrons. Because the transfer of spectral weight between the localized and itinerant electronic degrees of freedom is gradual, the Kondo liquid typically coexis…
We propose that the finite size of the Kondo screening cloud, xi_K, can be probed by measuring the charge quantization in a one-dimensional system coupled to a small quantum dot. When the chemical potential, mu in the system is varied at zero temperature, one should observe charge steps whose locations are at values of mu that are controlled by the Kondo effect when the system size L is comparable to xi_K. We show that, if the standard Kondo model is used, the ratio between the widths of the Coulomb blockade valleys with odd or even number of electrons is a universal scaling function of xi_K/L…
In this work we report a detailed ESR spectroscopic study of the single-crystalline samples of the van der Waals compounds $M_{\text{2}}$P$_{\text{2}}$S$_{\text{6}}$ ($M_{\text{2}}$ = Mn$_{\text{2}}$, MnNi, Ni$_{\text{2}}$), performed at an excitation frequency of 9.56 GHz, in a broad range of temperatures above the magnetic order, and at different orientations of the magnetic field with respect to the sample. Analyzing temperature and angular dependences of the resonance field and of the linewidth of the Mn$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ compound we have observed a significant change of the spin dynamics from…
We present a study of the spin dynamics of magnetic defects induced by Li substitution of the plane Cu in the normal state of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$. The fluctuations of the coupled Cu magnetic moments in the vicinity of Li are probed by near-neighbour $^{89}$Y {\it and} $^7$Li NMR spin lattice relaxation. The data indicates that the magnetic perturbation fluctuates as a single entity with a correlation time $τ$ which scales with the local static susceptibility. This behaviour is reminiscent of the low $T$ Kondo state of magnetic impurities in conventional metals. Surprisingly it extends well …
This article describes the Fermi surface properties of CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ and its alloy systems CeRu$_2$(Si$_x$Ge$_{1-x}$)$_2$ and Ce$_x$La$_{1-x}$Ru$_2$Si$_2$ studied by the de Haas - van Alphen (dHvA) effect. We pay particular attention to how the Fermi surface properties and the f electron state change with magnetic properties, in particular how they change associated with metamagnetic transition and quantum phase transition. After summarizing the important physical properties of CeRu$_2$Si$_2$, we present the magnetic phase diagrams of CeRu$_2$(Si$_x$Ge$_{1-x}$)$_2$ and Ce$_x$La$_{1-x}$Ru$_2$S…
A technique for measuring the electrical resistivity and absolute thermopower is presented for pressures up to 30 GPa, temperatures down to 25 mK and magnetic fields up to 10 T. With the examples of CeCu2Ge2 and CeCu2Si2 we focus on the interplay of normal phase and superconducting properties. With increasing pres- sure, the behaviour of CeCu2Ge2 evolves from that of an antiferromagnetically ordered Kondo system to that characteristic of an intermediate valence compound as the Kondo temperature increases by about two orders of magnitude. In the pressure window 8-10 < P < 20 GPa, a superconduct…
We present nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements performed on single crystalline \ccag{}, a member of a recently discovered family of heavy fermion materials Ce$_2M$Al$_7$Ge$_4$ ($M$ = Co, Ir, Ni, or Pd). Previous measurements indicated a strong Kondo interaction as well as magnetic order below $T_M = 1.8$ K. Our NMR spectral measurements show that the Knight shift $K$ is proportional to the bulk magnetic susceptibility $χ$ at high temperatures. A clear Knight shift anomaly ($K \not\propto χ$) is observed at coherence temperatures $T^* \sim 17.5$ …
We investigate theoretically the spiral staircase Heisenberg spin-$1/2$ ladder in the presence of antiferromagnetic long-range spin interactions and a uniform magnetic field. As a special case we also consider the Kondo necklace model. If the magnetizations of the two chains forming the ladder satisfy a certain resonance condition, involving interchain couplings as perturbations, the system is in a partially gapped magnetic phase hosting excitations characterized by fractional spins, whose values can be changed by the magnetic field. We show that these fractional spin excitations can be probed…
Femtosecond time-resolved optical spectroscopy was used to systematically study photoexcited carrier relaxation dynamics in the intermediate-valence heavy fermion system Yb1-xLuxAl3 (0 < x < 1). Given the demonstrated sensitivity of this experimental technique to the presence of the low energy gaps in the charge excitation spectrum, the aim of this work was to study the effect of dilution of the Kondo lattice on its low energy electronic structure. The results imply that in Yb1-xLuxAl3 the hybridization gap, resulting from hybridization of local moments and conduction electrons, persists up to…
