Quantum criticality in Yb(Rh0.97Co0.03)2Si2 is investigated by means of resistivity and magnetoresistance. The partial substitution of Co leads to a stabilization of the magnetism as expected according to the application of chemical pressure for Yb systems. However, the signature of the Kondo-breakdown remains at the same position in the temperature-magnetic field phase diagram compared to stoichiometric YbRh2Si2. As a consequence, the Kondo-breakdown is situated within the antiferromagnetic phase. These results fit well within the global phase diagram under chemical pressure [1].
We analyze the effect of the electron-electron interaction on the resistivity of a metal near a Pomeranchuk quantum phase transition (QPT). We show that Umklapp processes are not effective near a QPT, and one must consider both interactions and disorder to obtain finite and T dependent resistivity. By power counting, the correction to the residual resistivity at low T scales as AT^{(D+2)/3} near a Z=3 QPT. We show, however, that A=0 for a simply connected, convex Fermi surface in 2D, due to hidden integrability of the electron motion. We argue that A >0 in a two-band (s-d) model and propose th…
It was reported by Shiino et al in J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 86, 123705 (2017) that Ce_xLa_{1-x} Cu_{5.62} Au_{0.38} (x=0.02-0.10) exhibits a new type of quantum criticality in both magnetic and thermal properties, which is the same as that observed in a series of materials exhibiting quantum critical valence fluctuations (QCVF), such as β-YbAlB_4, Yb_{15}Al_{34}Au_{51}, and so on. However, the temperature (T) dependence in the resistivity rho(T) for T<0.5K is quite anomalous, i.e., ρ(T)\propto (const.-T^{n}) with n \simeq 0.75 at x=0.05. We find that this anomalous exponent is given by n=2(1-ζ), wit…
This work presents and analyzes electrical resistivity data on the organic superconductor (TMTSF)$_2$ClO$_4$ and their anion substituted alloys (TMTSF)$_2$(ClO$_4$)$_{1-x}$(ReO$_4$)$_x$ along the least conducting $c^\star$ axis. Nonmagnetic disorder introduced by finite size domains of anion ordering on non Fermi liquid character of resistivity is investigated near the conditions of quantum criticality. The evolution of the $T$-linear resistivity term with anion disorder shows a limited decrease in contrast with the complete suppression of the critical temperature $T_c$ as expected for unconve…
A description of the electronic correlations contained in the Hubbard model on the square-lattice perturbed by very weak three-dimensional uniaxial anisotropy in terms of the residual interactions of charge $c$ fermions and spin-neutral composite two-spinon $s1$ fermions is used to access further information on the origin of quantum critical behavior in the hole-doped cuprate superconductors. Excellent quantitative agreement with their anisotropic linear-$ω$ one-electron scattering rate and normal-state linear-$T$ resistivity is achieved. Our results provide strong evidence that the normal-sta…
We propose a theory of longitudinal resistivity in the normal phase of quasi-one-dimensional organic superconductors near the quantum critical point where antiferromagnetism borders with superconductivity under pressure. The linearized semi-classical Boltzmann equation is solved numerically, fed in by the half-filling electronic umklapp scattering vertex as derived from one-loop renormalization group calculations for the quasi-one-dimensional electron gas model. The momentum and temperature dependence of umklapp scattering has an important impact on the behaviour of longitudinal resistivity in…
In this paper we critically discuss several examples of two-dimensional electronic systems displaying interaction-driven metal-insulator transitions of the Mott (or Wigner--Mott) type, including dilute two-dimension electron gases (2DEG) in semiconductors, Mott organic materials, as well as the recently discovered transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) moiré bilayers. Remarkably similar behavior is found in all these systems, which is starting to paint a robust picture of Mott criticality. Most notable, on the metallic side a resistivity maximum is observed whose temperature scale vanishes at t…
Bad-Metal (BM) behavior featuring linear temperature dependence of the resistivity extending to well above the Mott-Ioffe-Regel (MIR) limit is often viewed as one of the key unresolved signatures of strong correlation. Here we associate the BM behavior with the Mott quantum criticality by examining a fully frustrated Hubbard model where all long-range magnetic orders are suppressed, and the Mott problem can be rigorously solved through Dynamical Mean-Field Theory. We show that for the doped Mott insulator regime, the coexistence dome and the associated first-order Mott metal-insulator transiti…
A quantum critical point (QCP) between the antiferromagnetic and the paramagnetic phases was realized by applying a hydrostatic pressure of ~ 7 GPa on single crystals of NiS_{2} pyrite with a low residual resistivity, rho_{0}, of 0.5 mu-Omega-cm. We found that the critical behavior of the resistivity, rho, in this clean system contrasts sharply with those observed in its disordered analogue, NiS_{2-x}Se_{x} solid-solution, demonstrating the unexpectedly drastic effect of disorder on the quantum criticality. Over a whole paramagnetic region investigated up to P = 9 GPa, a crossover temperature,…
We present a comprehensive dynamical mean field study of the triangular lattice moiré Hubbard model, which is believed to represent the physics of moiré bilayer transition metal dichalcogenides. In these materials, important aspects of the band structure including the bandwidth and the order and location of van Hove singularities can be tuned by varying the interlayer potential. We present a magnetic and metal-insulator phase diagram and a detailed study of the dependence of the resistivity on temperature, band filling and interlayer potential. We find that transport displays Fermi liquid, str…
The strange metal behavior, usually characterized by a linear-in-temperature (T) resistivity, is a still unsolved mystery in solid-state physics. Usually it is associated with the proximity to a quantum critical point (a second order transition at temperature T = 0) focusing on the related divergent order parameter correlation length. Here, we propose a paradigmatic shift, focusing on a divergent characteristic time scale due to a divergent dissipation acting on the fluctuating critical modes, while their correlation length stays finite. To achieve a divergent dissipation, we propose a mechani…
Multipolar Fermi Surface Deformations in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ Probed by Resistivity and Sound Attenuation: A Window into Electron Viscosity and the Collision Operator
Kinetic properties of a two dimensional model of fermions interacting with antiferromagnetic spin excitations near the quantum critical point (QCP) are considered. The temperature or doping are assumed to be sufficiently high, such that the pseudogap does not appear. In contrast to standard spin-fermion models, it is assumed that there are intrinsic inhomogeneities in the system suppressing space correlations of the antiferromagnetic excitations. It is argued that the inhomogeneities in the spin excitations in the "strange metal" phase can be a consequence of existence of $π$-shifted domain wa…
Quantum criticality due to the valence transition in some Yb-based heavy fermion metals has gradually turned out to play a crucial role to understand the non-Fermi liquid properties that cannot be understood from the conventional quantum criticality theory due to magnetic transitions. Namely, critical exponents giving the temperature (T) dependence of the resistivity ρ(T), the Sommerfeld coefficient, C(T)/T, the magnetic susceptibility, χ(T), and the NMR relaxation rates, 1/(T_{1}T), can be understood as the effect of the critical valence fluctuations of f electrons in Yb ion in a unified way.…
Perfect $T$-linear resistivity associated with universal scattering rate: $1/τ=αk_B T/\hbar$ with $α\sim 1$, so-called Planckian metal state, has been observed in the normal state of a variety of strongly correlated superconductors close to a quantum critical point. However, the microscopic origin of this intriguing phenomena and its link to quantum criticality still remains an outstanding open problem. In this work, we observe the quantum-critical $T/B$-scaling of the Planckian metal state in the resistivity and heat capacity of heavy-electron superconductor Ce$_{1-x}$Nd$_x$CoIn$_5$ in magnet…
Quasi-two dimensional itinerant fermions in the Anti-Ferro-Magnetic (AFM) quantum-critical region of their phase diagram, such as in the Fe-based superconductors or in some of the heavy-fermion compounds, exhibit a resistivity varying linearly with temperature and a contribution to specific heat or thermopower proportional to $T \ln T$. It is shown here that a generic model of itinerant AFM can be canonically transformed such that its critical fluctuations around the AFM-vector $Q$ can be obtained from the fluctuations in the long wave-length limit of a dissipative quantum XY model. The fluctu…
This posting contains raw data used for extracting features of the phase diagram and quantum criticality versus magnetic field $B$, temperature $T$ and Rh-doping $x$ that will soon appear in Physical Review Letters, 2004. All of the raw resistivity data is shown while only a selection of the magnetization data is shown for which a sample-out background subtraction was made.
A renormalization group treatment of metamagnetic quantum criticality in metals is presented. In clean systems the universality class is found to be of the overdamped, conserving (dynamical exponent z=3) Ising type. Detailed results are obtained for the field and temperature dependence of physical quantities including the differential susceptibility, resistivity and specific heat near the transition. An application of the theory is made to Sr3Ru2O7, which appears to exhibit a metamagnetic critical end-point at a very low temperature and a field of order 5-7T.
Within the stripe quantum critical point scenario for high $T_c$ superconductors, we point out the possible direct contribution of charge collective fluctuations to the optical absorption and to the d.c. resistivity.
The effect of pressure on the unique electronic state of the antiferromagnetic (AF) compound EuCu2Ge2 has been measured in a wide temperature range from 10 mK to 300 K by electrical resistivity measurements up to 10 GPa. The Neel temperature of TN = 15 K at ambient pressure increases monotonically with increasing pressure and becomes a maximum of TN = 27 K at 6.2 GPa but suddenly drops to zero at Pc = 6.5 GPa, suggesting the quantum critical point (QCP) of the valence transition of Eu from a nearly divalent state to that with trivalent weight. The rhomag0 and A values obtained from the low-tem…
We have constructed a pressure$-$temperature ($P-T$) phase diagram of $P$-induced superconductivity in EuFe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals, via resistivity ($ρ$) measurements up to 3.2 GPa. As hydrostatic pressure is applied, an antiferromagnetic (AF) transition attributed to the FeAs layers at $T_\mathrm{0}$ shifts to lower temperatures, and the corresponding resistive anomaly becomes undetectable for $P$ $\ge$ 2.5 GPa. This suggests that the critical pressure $P_\mathrm{c}$ where $T_\mathrm{0}$ becomes zero is about 2.5 GPa. We have found that the AF order of the Eu$^{2+}$ moments survives up to …
We study the quantum phase transitions in the nickel pnctides, CeNi$_{2-δ}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$ ($δ$ $\approx$ 0.07-0.22). This series displays the distinct heavy fermion behavior in the rarely studied parameter regime of dilute carrier limit. We systematically investigate the magnetization, specific heat and electrical transport down to low temperatures. Upon increasing the P-content, the antiferromagnetic order of the Ce-4$f$ moment is suppressed continuously and vanishes at $x_c \sim$ 0.55. At this doping, the temperature dependences of the specific heat and longitudinal resistivity di…
A thermodynamic and transport study of Sr4Ru3O10 as a function of temperature and magnetic field are presented. The central results include a growing specific heat C with increasing field B, a divergent magnetic contribution to C/T at low temperatures, an abrupt jump and a peak in C/T at 2.90 T and 7 T for B||ab-plane and B||c-axis, respectively, and corresponding changes in the low T power laws of the resistivity. The novelty of this work lies in the fact that the quantum fluctuations occur in a system that shows both intralayer metamagnetism and interlayer spontaneous ferromagnetism, a featu…
The electric resistivity $ρ(T)$ under hydrostatic pressure up to 8 GPa was measured above 2 K using a high-quality single crystal of the Yb-based heavy fermion system $β$-YbAlB$_4$. We found pressure-induced magnetic ordering above the critical pressure $P_{\rm c} \approx $ 2.4 GPa. This phase transition temperature $T_M$ is enhanced with pressure and reaches 30 K at a pressure of 8 GPa, which is the highest transition temperature for the Yb-based heavy fermion compounds. In contrast, the resistivity is insensitive to pressure below $P_c$ and exhibits the $T$-linear behavior in the temperature…
We discuss the boundary critical behaviors of two dimensional quantum phase transitions with fractionalized degrees of freedom in the bulk, motivated by the fact that usually it is the $1d$ boundary that is exposed and can be conveniently probed in many experimental platforms. In particular, we mainly discuss boundary criticality of two examples: i. the quantum phase transition between a $2d$ $Z_2$ topological order and an ordered phase with spontaneous symmetry breaking; ii. the continuous quantum phase transition between metal and a particular type of Mott insulator (U(1) spin liquid). This …
Understanding electrical transport in strange metals, including the seeming universality of Planckian $T$-linear resistivity, remains a longstanding challenge in condensed matter physics. We propose that local imaging techniques, such as nitrogen vacancy center magnetometry, can locally identify signatures of quantum critical response which are invisible in measurements of a bulk electrical resistivity. As an illustrative example, we use a minimal holographic model for a strange metal in two spatial dimensions to predict how electrical current will flow in regimes dominated by quantum critical…
The pressure-temperature phase diagram of the orthorhombic ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe was determined by resistivity measurements up to $10.5~$GPa. The Curie temperature $T_C$ is suppressed with pressure and vanishes at the critical pressure $p_c\approx1~$GPa. Superconductivity is observed in both the ferromagnetic state at low pressure, and in the paramagnetic state above $p_c$ up to about 4$~$GPa. Non-Fermi liquid behavior appears in a large pressure range. The resistivity varies linearly with temperature around $p_c$ and evolves continuously with pressure to a $T^2$ Fermi-liquid beha…
Dilation and thermopower measurements on YbAgGe, a heavy-fermion antiferromagnet, clarify and refine the magnetic field-temperature (H-T) phase diagram and reveal a field-induced phase with T-linear resistivity. On the low-H side of this phase we find evidence for a first-order transition and suggest that YbAgGe at 4.5 T may be close to a quantum critical end point. On the high-H side our results are consistent with a second-order transition suppressed to a quantum critical point near 7.2 T. We discuss these results in light of global phase diagrams proposed for Kondo lattice systems.
(Sr$_{1-x}$La$_x$)$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ undergoes a bulk insulator-to-metal transition (IMT) at $x \approx \mathrm{0.04}$. Through careful analysis of previously published data ($x=\mathrm{0.053, 0.061, 0.076}$), we find an extended region below the Debye temperature in which the resistivity appears to scale linearly with temperature. Meanwhile resonant (in)elastic x-ray scattering data ($x=\mathrm{0.065}$) suggest a possible crossover from quantum paramagnetic to quantum critical phenomenology between 100 and 200~K. We put this into context with other results, and propose a possible phase diagram a…
We study the electrical resistivity in the quantum Griffiths phase associated with the antiferromagnetic quantum phase transition in a metal. The resistivity is calculated by means of the semi-classical Boltzmann equation. We show that the scattering of electrons by locally ordered rare regions leads to a singular temperature dependence. The rare-region contribution to the resistivity varies as $T^λ$ with temperature $T,$ where the $λ$ is the usual Griffiths exponent which takes the value zero at the critical point and increases with distance from criticality. We find similar singular contribu…
PrV2Al20 is the heavy fermion superconductor based on the cubic Gamma3 doublet that exhibits non- magnetic quadrupolar ordering below ~ 0.6 K. Our magnetotransport study on PrV2Al20 reveals field-induced quadrupolar quantum criticality at Hc ~ 11 T applied along the [111] direction. Near the critical field Hc required to suppress the quadrupolar state, we find a marked enhancement of the resistivity rho(H, T), a divergent effective mass of quasiparticles and concomitant non-Fermi liquid (NFL) behavior (i.e. rho(T) ~ T^n with n < 0.5). We also observe the Shubnikov de Haas-effect above ?Hc, ind…
The samples of (Mn$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)Si with $x=0.15$ and $x=0.17$ were grown and their physical properties: magnetization and magnetic susceptibility, resistivity and heat capacity were studied. The data analysis included also the previous results at $x=0.057, 0.063, 0.09$. The indicated doping MnSi with Co completely destroys the helical phase transition whereas basically saves the helical fluctuation area normally situated slightly above the phase transition temperature. This area spreading from $\sim$5 to 0 K is not changed much with doping and forms some sort of helical fluctuation cloud reve…
Polycrystalline samples of the isostructural alloys UNi1-xCoxSi2 (0 <= x <= 1) were studied by means of x-ray powder diffraction, magnetization, electrical resistivity and specific heat measurements, at temperatures down to 2 K and in magnetic fields up to 5 T. The experimental data revealed an evolution from strongly anisotropic ferromagnetism with pronounced Kondo effect, observed for the alloys with x < 0.98 and being gradually suppressed with rising Co-content, to spin-glass-like states with dominant spin fluctuations, seen for the sample with x = 0.98. Extrapolation of the value of TC(x) …

We report a metamagnetic critical point at (B*,T*)=(5.1T,1.1K) for magnetic fields applied perpendicular to the (tetragonal) c-axis of Sr3Ru2O7. First-order behaviour well below T* indicates that (B*,T*) marks a critical end-point that terminates a line of first-order metamagnetic transitions. The absence of first-order behaviour in the metamagnetic transition with B||c confirms that the non-Fermi liquid behaviour for B||c is underpinned by a metamagnetic quantum critical end-point for which T*->0. Scaling behaviour of the resistivity under hydrostatic pressure yields the surprising result tha…
We study the temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity in a system composed of critical spin chains interacting with three dimensional conduction electrons and driven to criticality via an external magnetic field. The relevant experimental system is Yb$_2$Pt$_2$Pb, a metal where itinerant electrons coexist with localized moments of Yb-ions which can be described in terms of effective S = 1/2 spins with dominantly one-dimensional exchange interaction. The spin subsystem becomes critical in a relatively weak magnetic field, where it behaves like a Luttinger liquid. We theoretically ex…
Electronic nematicity in correlated metals often occurs alongside another instability such as magnetism. As a result, the question remains whether nematicity alone can drive unconventional superconductivity or anomalous (quantum critical) transport in such systems. In FeSe, nematicity emerges in isolation, providing a unique opportunity to address this question. Studies to date, however, have proved inconclusive; while signatures of nematic criticality are observed upon sulfur substitution, they appear to be quenched under the application of pressure due to the emergent magnetism. Here, we stu…
Fermions in the Fermi gas obey the Pauli exclusion principle restricting any two fermions from filling the same quantum state. Strong interaction between fermions can completely change the properties of the Fermi gas. In our theoretical study we find a new exotic quantum phase in strongly interacting Fermi gases constrained to a certain condition imposed on the Fermi surfaces which we call the Fermi surface resonance. The new phase is quantum critical which can be identified by the power-law frequency tail of the spectral density and divergent static susceptibilities. An especially striking fe…
Resistivity in the quantum-critical fluctuation region of several metallic compounds such as the cuprates, the heavy-fermions, Fe-chalogenides and pnictides, twisted bi-layer graphene and WSe$_2$, is linear in temperature $T$ as well as in a magnetic field $H$. Scattering of fermions by the excitations of a time-reversal odd polar vector field ${\bf Ω}$ characterizing loop-current fluctuations has been shown to give a linear in T resistivity and other anomalous properties in the cuprates. An extension of this theory to an applied magnetic field is presented. Magnetic field is shown to generate…
Electrical resistivity measurements on a single crystal of the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn_5 at pressures to 4.2 GPa reveal a strong crossover in transport properties near P^* \approx 1.6 GPa, where T_c is a maximum. The temperature-pressure phase diagram constructed from these data provides a natural connection to cuprate physics, including the possible existence of a pseudogap.
In this paper, we present the systematic measurements of the temperature and magnetic field dependences of the thermodynamic and transport properties of the Yb-based heavy fermion YbPtBi for temperatures down to 0.02 K with magnetic fields up to 140 kOe to address the possible existence of a field-tuned quantum critical point. Measurements of magnetic field and temperature dependent resistivity, specific heat, thermal expansion, Hall effect, and thermoelectric power indicate that the AFM order can be suppressed by applied magnetic field of $H_{c}$ $\sim$ 4 kOe. In the $H-T$ phase diagram of Yb…
We present a new Kondo-lattice system, YbNi4P2, which is a clean heavy-fermion metal with a severely reduced ferromagnetic ordering temperature at T_C=0.17K, evidenced by distinct anomalies in susceptibility, specific-heat, and resistivity measurements. The ferromagnetic nature of the transition, with only a small ordered moment of ~0.05mu_B, is established by a diverging susceptibility at T_C with huge absolute values in the ferromagnetically ordered state, severely reduced by small magnetic fields. Furthermore, YbNi4P2 is a stoichiometric system with a quasi-one-dimensional crystal and elect…
The heavy fermion compound Ce$_{3}$Pd$_{20}$Si$_{6}$ displays unconventional quantum criticality as the lower of two consecutive phase transitions is fully suppressed by magnetic field. Here we report on the effects of pressure as additional tuning parameter. Specific heat and electrical resistivity measurements reveal a converse effect of pressure on the two transitions, leading to the merging of both transitions at 6.2 kbar. The field-induced quantum criticality is robust under pressure tuning. We rationalize our findings within an extended version of the global phase diagram for antiferroma…
We present a new type of quantum critical material YbCo$_2$Ge$_4$, having the largest quantum-critical pseudospin size ever. The YbCo$_2$Ge$_4$-type structure is new, forms in the orthorhombic $Cmcm$ system, and is related to the well-known ThCr$_2$Si$_2$ structure. Heavy rare earth (Tm,Yb,Lu, or Y) members are also possible to be grown. YbCo$_2$Ge$_4$ possesses the Ising-type ground-state doublet, namely the simplest ones of uniaxially up or down, $|\pm \sim 7/2\rangle$. It is clearly manifested through comprehensive resistivity, magnetization, specific heat, and NQR/NMR experiments. Large ps…
It is shown that unconventional critical phenomena commonly observed in paramagnetic metals YbRh2Si2, YbRh2(Si0.95Ge0.05)2, and beta-YbAlB4 is naturally explained by the quantum criticality of Yb-valence fluctuations. We construct the mode coupling theory taking account of local correlation effects of f electrons and find that unconventional criticality is caused by the locality of the valence fluctuation mode. We show that measured low-temperature anomalies such as divergence of uniform spin susceptibility $χT^{-ζ)$ with $ζ~0.6$ giving rise to a huge enhancement of the Wilson ratio and the em…
Central to the normal state of cuprate high-temperature superconductors is the collapse of the pseudogap, briefly reviewed here, at a critical point and the subsequent onset of the strange-metal characterized by a resistivity that scales linearly with temperature. A possible clue to the resolution of this problem is the inter-relation between two facts: 1) A robust theory of T-linear resistivity resulting from quantum criticality requires an additional length scale outside the standard 1-parameter scaling scenario and 2) breaking the Landau correspondence between the Fermi gas and an interacti…
We report the temperature-pressure (T-P) phase diagram of CePt2In7 single crystals, especially the pressure evolution of the antiferromagnetic order and the emergence of superconductivity, which have been studied by electrical resistivity and ac calorimetry under nearly hydrostatic environments. Compared with its polycrystalline counterpart, bulk superconductivity coexists with antiferromagnetism in a much narrower pressure region. The possible existence of textured superconductivity and local quantum criticality also are observed in CePt2In7, exhibiting a remarkable similarity with CeRhIn5.
Localized magnetic moments have been predicted to develop in graphene samples with vacancies or adsorbates. The interplay between such magnetic impurities and graphene's Dirac quasiparticles leads to remarkable many-body phenomena, which have so far proved elusive to experimental efforts. In this article, we study the thermodynamic, spectral and transport signatures of quantum criticality and Kondo physics of a dilute ensemble of atomic impurities in graphene. We consider vacancies and adatoms that either break or preserve graphene's $C_{3v}$ and inversion symmetries. In a neutral graphene sam…
The Kondo breakdown scenario has been claimed to allow the $T$-linear resistivity in the vicinity of the Kondo breakdown quantum critical point, two cornerstones of which are the dynamical exponent $z = 3$ quantum criticality for hybridization fluctuations in three dimensions and irrelevance of vertex corrections for transport due to the presence of localized electrons. We revisit the issue of vertex corrections in electrical transport coefficients. Assuming that two kinds of bosonic degrees of freedom, hybridization excitations and gauge fluctuations, are in equilibrium, we derive coupled qua…
The strange electronic state of a class of materials which violates the predictions of conventional Fermi-liquid theory of metals remains enigmatic. Proximity to a quantum critical point is a possible origin of this non-Fermi liquid (NFL) behavior, which is usually accomplished by tuning the ground state with non-thermal control parameters such as chemical composition, magnetic field or pressure. We present the spin dynamics study of a stoichiometric NFL system CeRhBi, using low-energy inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and muon spin relaxation (muSR) measurements. It shows evidence for an ene…
Crystal structure, specific heat, thermal expansion, magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity studies of the heavy fermion system CeNi_{9-x}Cu_xGe_4 (0 <= x <= 1) reveal a continuous tuning of the ground state by Ni/Cu substitution from an effectively fourfold degenerate non-magnetic Kondo ground state of CeNi_9Ge_4 (with pronounced non-Fermi-liquid features) towards a magnetically ordered, effectively twofold degenerate ground state in CeNi_8CuGe_4 with T_N = 175 +- 5 mK. Quantum critical behavior, C/T ~ χ~ -ln(T), is observed for x about 0.4. Hitherto, CeNi_{9-x}Cu_xGe_4 represents…
When the transition temperature of a continuous phase transition is tuned to absolute zero, new ordered phases and physical behaviour emerge in the vicinity of the resulting quantum critical point. Sr3Ru2O7 can be tuned through quantum criticality with magnetic field at low temperature. Near its critical field Bc it displays the hallmark T-linear resistivity and a T log(1/T) electronic heat capacity behaviour of strange metals. However, these behaviours have not been related to any critical fluctuations. Here we use inelastic neutron scattering to reveal the presence of collective spin fluctua…
We have studied disorder-induced in-gap states and effect of light illumination in the insulating phase of spinel-type CuIr$_2$S$_4$ using ultra-violet photoemission spectroscopy (UPS). The Ir$^{3+}$/Ir$^{4+}$ charge-ordered gap appears below the metal-insulator transition temperature. However, in the insulating phase, in-gap spectral features with $softgap$ are observed in UPS just below the Fermi level ($E_F$), corresponding to the variable range hopping transport observed in resistivity. The spectral weight at $E_F$ is not increased by light illumination, indicating that the Ir$^{4+}$-Ir$^{…
The twin issues of the nature of the normal state and competing order(s) in the iron arsenides are central to understanding their unconventional, high-Tc superconductivity. We use a combination of transport anisotropy measurements on detwinned Sr(Fe(1-x)Co(x))2As2 single crystals and local density approximation plus dynamical mean field theory (LDA + DMFT) calculations to revisit these issues. The peculiar resistivity anisotropy and its evolution with x are naturally interpreted in terms of an underlying orbital-selective Mott transition (OSMT) that gaps out the dxz or dyz states. Further, we …
Two phase transitions in the tetragonal strongly correlated electron system CeNiAsO were probed by neutron scattering and zero field muon spin rotation. For $T <T_{N1}$ = 8.7(3) K, a second order phase transition yields an incommensurate spin density wave with wave vector $\textbf{k} = (0.44(4), 0, 0)$. For $T < T_{N2}$ = 7.6(3) K, we find co-planar commensurate order with a moment of $0.37(5)~μ_B$, reduced to $30 \%$ of the saturation moment of the $|\pm\frac{1}{2}\rangle$ Kramers doublet ground state, which we establish by inelastic neutron scattering. Muon spin rotation in $\rm CeNiAs_{1-x}…
We report resistivity measurements in the normal state of CeCoIn5 down to 40 mK and simultaneously in magnetic fields up to 9 T in the [001] crystallographic direction and under pressures up to 1.3 GPa. At ambient pressure the data are consistent with a field tuned quantum critical point coincident with the superconducting upper critical field H_{c2}, as observed previously. We find that with increasing pressure the quantum critical point moves inside the superconducting dome to lower fields. Thus, we can rule out that superconductivity is directly responsible for the non-Fermi liquid behavior…
