Quasi-two dimensional itinerant fermions in the Anti-Ferro-Magnetic (AFM) quantum-critical region of their phase diagram, such as in the Fe-based superconductors or in some of the heavy-fermion compounds, exhibit a resistivity varying linearly with temperature and a contribution to specific heat or thermopower proportional to $T \ln T$. It is shown here that a generic model of itinerant AFM can be canonically transformed such that its critical fluctuations around the AFM-vector $Q$ can be obtained from the fluctuations in the long wave-length limit of a dissipative quantum XY model. The fluctuations of the dissipative quantum XY model in 2D have been evaluated recently and in a large regime of parameters, they are determined, not by renormalized spin-fluctuations but by topological excitations. In this regime, the fluctuations are separable in their spatial and temporal dependence and have a dynamical critical exponent $z =\infty.$ The time dependence gives $ω/T$-scaling at criticality. The observed resistivity and entropy then follow directly. Several predictions to test the theory are also given.
Critical thermodynamics close to a metamagnetic quantum critical endpoint (QCEP) in a metal is discussed within the framework of spin-fluctuation theory. We analyze the effective potential for the Ising order parameter that is renormalized by spin-fluctuations and acquires a characteristic temperature dependence. The resulting magnetic field, H, and temperature, T, dependence of the magnetization, specific heat, thermal expansion, magnetostriction, susceptibility and the Grüneisen parameter are determined, and the crossover lines in the (H,T) phase diagram are specified. We point out that the …
The electronic structure and magnetic properties of hexagonal Sc$_3$In are calculated within density functional theory. We find that the Fermi energy lies in a region of flat Sc $d$ derived bands leading to a peak in the density of states and Stoner ferromagnetism. The calculated local spin density and generalized gradient approximation spin magnetizations are both enhanced with respect to experiment, which is an indication of significant quantum critical fluctuations, neglected in these approximations. We find, as expected, that the ferromagnetism is initially enhanced under pressure, meaning…
Highly accurate numerical results for single-particle spectrum and order parameter are obtained for the magnetically ordered Kondo lattice by means of the dynamical mean-field theory combined with the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method. Hybridized energy bands involving local spins are identified in the Néel state as a hallmark of itinerant antiferromagnetism. At the boundary of the reduced Brillouin zone, the two-fold degeneracy remains in spite of the doubled unit cell. This degeneracy results if the molecular field felt by localized spins has identical magnitude and reversed directi…
Quantum-critical behavior of the itinerant electron antiferromagnet (V0.9Ti0.1)2O3 has been studied by single-crystal neutron scattering. By directly observing antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations in the paramagnetic phase, we have shown that the characteristic energy depends on temperature as c_1 + c_2 T^{3/2}, where c_1 and c_2 are constants. This T^{3/2} dependence demonstrates that the present strongly correlated d-electron antiferromagnet clearly shows the criticality of the spin-density-wave quantum phase transition in three space dimensions.
Itinerant and local moment magnetism have substantively different origins, and require distinct theoretical treatment. A unified theory of magnetism has long been sought after, and remains elusive, mainly due to the limited number of known itinerant magnetic systems. In the case of the two such examples discovered several decades ago, the itinerant ferromagnets ZrZn_2 and Sc_3In, the understanding of their magnetic ground states draws on the existence of 3d electrons subject to strong spin fluctuations. Similarly, in Cr, an elemental itinerant antiferromagnet (IAFM) with a spin density wave (S…
We demonstrate that the cluster-glass state emerges as ferromagnetic quantum criticality is avoided in itinerant ferromagnet Sr1-x(La0.5K0.5)xRuO3. In this compound, the ferromagnetic order is suppressed by increasing x, and then disappears at the critical concentration: x=0.5. In this x range, the present study reveals that no prominent feature is ascribed to the quantum critical fluctuations in specific heat. Instead, ac magnetic susceptibility exhibits a broad peak due to spontaneous spin freezing, and the peak temperature depends significantly on the frequency of the applied ac magnetic fi…
In a recent paper [Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 117201 (2003)], it is argued that an itinerant antiferromagnet in an external magnetic field undergoes a spin-flip transition, in marked contrast with the behavior of a localized antiferromagnet: for a weak magnetic field, the magnetization is parallel to the field, and flips to the perpendicular configuration at a critical value of the field. In this Comment we show that these conclusions are incorrect. The canted state (not considered in the Letter) is the antiferromagnetic ground state of the system up to a critical value of the field where the normal…
We present a theory of nonequilibrium quantum criticality in a coupled bilayer system of itinerant electron magnets. The model studied consists of the first layer subjected to an inplane current and open to an external substrate. The second layer is closed and subject to no direct external drive, but couples to the first layer via short-ranged spin exchange interaction. No particle exchange is assumed between the layers. Starting from a microscopic fermionic model, we derive an effective action in terms of two coupled bosonic fields which are related to the magnetization fluctuations of the tw…
We have investigated the spin dynamics in the bilayered perovskite Sr3Ru2O7 as a function of magnetic field and temperature using 17O-NMR. This system sits close to a metamagnetic quantum critical point (MMQCP) for the field perpendicular to the ruthenium oxide planes. We confirm Fermi-liquid behavior at low temperatures except for a narrow field region close to the MMQCP. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate divided by temperature 1/T1T is enhanced on approaching the metamagnetic critical field of 7.9 T and at the critical field 1/T1T continues to increase and does not show Fermi- liquid …
We report results of a magnetic and transport study of SrRu1-xMnxO3, i.e., Mn doped SrRuO3. The Mn doping drives the system from the itinerant ferromagnetic state (TC=165 K for x=0) through a quantum critical point at xc=0.39 to an insulating antiferromagnetic state. The onset of antiferromagnetism is abrupt with a Neel temperature increasing from 205 K for x=0.44 to 250 K for x=0.59. Accompanying this quantum phase transition is a drastic change in resistivity by as much as 8 orders of magnitude as a function of x at low temperatures. The critical composition xc=0.39 sharply separates the two…
We report a universal spin flip (SF) transition as a function of temperature in spin-density-wave (SDW) systems. At low temperatures the antiferromagnetic (AFM) polarization is parallel to the applied field and above a critical temperature the AFM polarization {\it flips} perpendicular to the field. This transition occurs in {\it any} SDW system and may be considered as a qualitative probe of the itinerant character of AFM in a given material. Our SF transition resolves the longstanding puzzle of the SF transition observed in cromium and may be at the origin of the equally puzzling SDW-I to SD…
We analyze the itinerant model for antiferromagnetism, which was developed previously by Plischke, Mattis, Brouers and Mizia. In this model we include both; single-site and two-site electron correlations. Including additionally band degeneration into the model allows for considering intra-atomic exchange interactions in the Hamiltonian. The modified Hartree-Fock approximation for the two-site interactions is used. This approximation gives the spin band narrowing, which is the same for both spin directions and affects possibility of antiferromagnetic ordering. We use the Green function techniqu…
We consider a two dimensional itinerant antiferromagnet near a quantum critical point. We show that, contrary to conventional wisdom, fermionic excitations in the ordered state are not the usual Fermi liquid quasiparticles. Instead, down to very low frequencies, the fermionic self energy varies as $ω^{2/3}$. This non-Fermi liquid behavior originates in the coupling of fermions to the longitudinal spin susceptibility $χ_{\parallel}(q, Ω)$ in which the order-induced ``gap'' in the spectrum at $q=0$ dissolves into the Landau damping term at $v_F q >Ω$. The transverse spin fluctuations obey $z=1$ …
The fragile nature of itinerant magnetism can be exploited using non-thermal parameters to study quantum criticality. The recently discovered quantum critical point (QCP) in the Sc-doped (hole-like doping) itinerant antiferromagnet TiAu (Ti$_{1-x}$Sc$_{x}$Au) raised questions about the effects of the crystal and electronic structures on the overall magnetic behavior. In this study, doping with V (electron-like doping) in Ti$_{1-x}$V$_{x}$Au introduces chemical disorder which suppresses antiferromagnetic order from $T_{\rm N} =$ 36~K for $x = 0$ down to 10 K for $x =$ 0.15, whereupon a solubili…
Ultrafast time-resolved photoinduced reflectivity is measured for the itinerant antiferromagnet UNiGa$_{5}$ ($T_{N} \approx$85 K) from room temperature to 10 K. The relaxation time $τ$ shows a sharp increase at $T_{N}$ consistent with the opening of a spin gap. In addition, the temperature dependence of $τ$ below $T_{N}$ is consistent with the opening of a spin gap leading to a quasiparticle recombination bottleneck as revealed by the Rothwarf-Taylor model. This contrasts with canonical heavy fermions such as CeCoIn$_{5}$ where the recombination bottleneck arises from the hybridization gap.
Hertz-Moriya-Millis theory with dynamical critical exponent $z = 2$ has been proposed to describe antiferromagnetic quantum criticality in itinerant electron systems. In this study we show that the dynamical critical exponent changes from $z = 2$ to $z = 3$ at low temperatures, which results from effective long-range interactions between spin fluctuations, generated by Fermi-surface fluctuations beyond the Eliashberg framework. We claim that the underlying physics for the $z = 3$ antiferromagnetic quantum criticality is the emergence of fermionized skyrmion excitations at low energies, which f…
The weak antiferromagnetism of URu${}_{2}$Si${}_{2}$ is discussed on the basis of a duality model which takes into account salient features of both itinerant fermions and "localized" component of spin degrees of freedom. The problem is analyzed in the framework of induced-moment mechanism by taking a singlet-singlet crystal field scheme together with the nesting property of partial Fermi surface of itinerant fermions . It is shown that the extremely small ordered moment $m$ of ${\cal O}$($10^{-2}$$\times$$μ_{B}$) can be compatible with the large specific-heat jump at the transition temperature…
We determine the effect of an in-plane current flow on the critical properties of a 2d itinerant electron system near a ferromagnetic-paramagnetic quantum critical point. We study a model in which a nonequilibrium steady state is established as a result of exchange of particles and energy with an underlying substrate. the current $\vec{j}$ gives rise not only to an effective temperature equal to the voltage drop over a distance of order the mean free path, but also to symmetry breaking terms of the form $\vec{j}\cdot \vec{nabla}$ in the effective action. The effect of the symmetry breaking on …
We show that despite the absence of a Hopf term and zero Berry phase terms, the N`eel ordered phase of 2+1 D quantum antiferromagnets have spin 1/2 excitations, i.e. spinons. The spinons are skyrmion excitations of a topological nature. Since skyrmion gap is proportional to the spin stiffness, quantum criticality corresponds to skyrmion gap collapse. We speculate that skyrmions are relevant at criticality and are, perhaps, related to recent suggestions of critical fractionalization.
We revisit an antiferromagnetic quantum phase transition with $\bm{Q} = 2 \bm{k}_{F}$, where $\bm{Q}$ is an ordering wave vector and $\bm{k}_{F}$ is a Fermi momentum. Reformulating the Hertz-Moriya-Millis theory within the strong coupling approach to diagonalize the spin-fermion coupling term and performing the scaling analysis for an effective field theory with quantum corrections in the Eliashberg approximation, we propose a novel interacting fixed point for this antiferromagnetic quantum phase transition, where antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations become locally critical to interact with ren…
Elemental chromium orders antiferromagnetically near room temperature, but the ordering temperature can be driven to zero by applying large pressures. We combine diamond anvil cell and synchrotron x-ray diffraction techniques to measure directly the spin and charge order in the pure metal at the approach to its quantum critical point. Both spin and charge order are suppressed exponentially with pressure, well beyond the region where disorder cuts off such a simple evolution, and they maintain a harmonic scaling relationship over decades in scattering intensity. By comparing the development of …
Superconductivity mediated by spin fluctuations in weak and nearly ferromagnetic metals is studied close to the zero-temperature magnetic transition. We solve analytically the Eliashberg equations for p-wave pairing and obtain the normal state quasiparticle self-energy and the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ as a function of the distance to the quantum critical point. We show that the reduction of quasiparticle coherence and life-time due to scattering by quasistatic spin fluctuations is the dominant pair-breaking process, which leads to a rapid suppression of $T_c$ to a nonzero v…
We investigate the zero-temperature phase diagram of the nearest-neighbor kagome antiferromagnet in the presence of Dzyaloshinksii-Moriya interaction. We develop a theory for the transition between Z2 spin liquids with bosonic spinons and a phase with antiferromagnetic long-range order. Connections to recent numerical studies and experiments are discussed.
Progress in the understanding of quantum critical properties of itinerant electrons has been hindered by the lack of effective models which are amenable to controlled analytical and numerically exact calculations. Here we establish that the disorder driven semimetal to metal quantum phase transition of three dimensional massless Dirac fermions could serve as a paradigmatic toy model for studying itinerant quantum criticality, which is solved in this work by exact numerical and approximate field theoretic calculations. As a result, we establish the robust existence of a non-Gaussian universalit…
$^{235}$U nuclear spin-lattice ($T_1^{-1}$) and spin-spin ($T_2^{-1}$) relaxation rates in the itinerant antiferromagnet USb$_2$ are reported as a function of temperature in zero field. The heating effect from the intense rf pulses that are necessary for the $^{235}$U NMR results in unusual complex thermal recovery of the nuclear magnetization which does not allow measuring $T_1^{-1}$ directly. By implementing an indirect method, however, we successfully extracted $T_1^{-1}$ of the $^{235}$U. We find that the temperature dependence of $T_1^{-1}$ for both $^{235}$U and $^{121}$Sb follows the po…
The interplay of magnetic and superconducting fluctuations in two dimensional systems with van Hove singularities in the electronic spectrum is considered within the functional renormalization group (fRG) approach. While the fRG flow has to be stoped at a certain minimal temperature T_RG^min, we study temperature dependence of magnetic and superconducting susceptibilities both, above and below T_RG^min, which allows to obtain the resulting ground state phase diagram. Close to half filling the fRG approach yields two quantum phase transitions: from commensurate antiferromagnetic to incommensura…
Using the density-matrix renormalization group, we determine the phase diagram of the spin 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a honeycomb lattice with a nearest neighbor interaction J1 and a frustrating, next-neighbor exchange J2. As frustration increases, the ground state exhibits Neel, plaquette and dimer orders, with critical points at J2/J1 = 0.22 and 0.35. We observe that both the spin gap and the corresponding order parameters vanish continuously at both the critical points, indicating the presence of deconfined quantum criticality.
The spin- and charge-density-wave order parameters of the itinerant antiferromagnet chromium are measured directly with non-resonant x-ray diffraction as the system is driven towards its quantum critical point with high pressure using a diamond anvil cell. The exponential decrease of the spin and charge diffraction intensities with pressure confirms the harmonic scaling of spin and charge, while the evolution of the incommensurate ordering vector provides important insight into the difference between pressure and chemical doping as means of driving quantum phase transitions. Measurement of the…
We study the quantum phase transition in the three-dimensional disordered itinerant antiferromagnet by Monte-Carlo simulations of the order-parameter field theory. We find strong evidence for the transition being controlled by an infinite-randomness fixed point: The dynamical scaling is activated, i.e., the logarithm of the energy scales like a power of the length, implying a dynamical exponent of infinity. The probability distribution of the energy gaps is very broad and becomes broader with increasing system size, even on a logarithmic scale.
The mysterious universal line revealing an independence of spin fluctuation contributions to the heat capacity of (Mn,Co)Si on impurity contents and its nature is discovered. This situation probably declares an invariance of the spin subsystem energy that may provide by the response of itinerant electron system on the volume change at doping.
The generalized spin stiffness constant for a doped quantum antiferromagnet has been investigated both analytically and numerically as a function of doping concentration at zero temperature, based on the strongly correlated t-J model on two-dimensional square lattice. The nature of the theoretical dependence of the stiffness constant on doping shows a striking similarity with that of the effective exchange constant, obtained from the combination of other theoretical and experimental techniques in the low doping region. This correspondence once again establishes that spin stiffness can very wel…
We report the electronic and magnetic behaviour of the frustrated triangular metallic antiferromagnet 2H-AgNiO2 in high magnetic fields (54 T) using thermodynamic and transport measurements. Here localized d electrons are arranged on an antiferromagnetic triangular lattice nested inside a honeycomb lattice with itinerant d electrons. When the magnetic field is along the easy axis we observe a cascade of field-induced transitions, attributed to the competition between easy-axis anisotropy, geometrical frustration and coupling of the localized and itinerant system. The quantum oscillations data …
The interpretation of the magnetic phase diagrams of strongly correlated electron systems remains controversial. In particular, the physics of quantum phase transitions, which occur at zero temperature, is still enigmatic. Heavy-fermion compounds aretextbook examples of quantum criticality, as doping, or the application of pressure or a magnetic field can lead to a quantum phase transition between a magnetically ordered state and a paramagnetic regime. A central question concerns the microscopic nature of the critical quantum fluctuations. Are they antiferromagnetic or of local origin? Here we…
Motivated by both experimental and theoretical activities, we discuss the fate of Kondo screening and possible quantum phase transitions in antiferromagnetically ordered phases of Kondo lattices. While transitions with topological changes of the Fermi surface may occur, we demonstrate that an entirely continuous evolution from itinerant to local-moment antiferromagnetism (i.e. from strong to negligible Kondo screening) is possible as well. This situation is in contrast to that in a non-symmetry-broken situation where a quantum phase transition towards an exotic metallic spin-liquid state neces…
A quantum critical point (QCP) of the heavy fermion Ce(Ru_{1-x}Rh_x)_2Si_2 (x = 0, 0.03) has been studied by single-crystalline neutron scattering. By accurately measuring the dynamical susceptibility at the antiferromagnetic wave vector k_3 = 0.35 c^*, we have shown that the energy width Gamma(k_3), i.e., inverse correlation time, depends on temperature as Gamma(k_3) = c_1 + c_2 T^{3/2 +- 0.1}, where c_1 and c_2 are x dependent constants, in a low temperature range. This critical exponent 3/2 +- 0.1 proves that the QCP is controlled by that of the itinerant antiferromagnet.
The most fascinating feature of certain two-dimensional (2D) gapless quantum spin liquid (QSL) is that their spinon excitations behave like the fermionic carriers of a paramagnetic metal. The spinon Fermi surface is then expected to produce a linear increase of the thermal conductivity with temperature that should manifest via a residual value ($κ_0/T$) in the zero-temperature limit. However, this linear in T behavior has been reported for very few QSL candidates. Here, we studied the ultralow-temperature thermal conductivity of an effective spin-1/2 triangular QSL candidate Na$_2$BaCo(PO$_4$)…
A focus of recent experimental and theoretical studies on heavy fermion systems close to antiferromagnetic (AFM) quantum critical points (QCP) is directed toward revealing the nature of the fixed point, i.e., whether it is an itinerant antiferromagnet [spin density wave (SDW)] type or a locally-critical fixed point. The relevance of the local QCP was proposed to explain the E/T-scaling with an anomalous exponent observed for the AFM QCP of CeCu_{5.9}Au_{0.1}. In this work, we have investigated an AFM QCP of another archetypal heavy fermion system Ce(Ru_{1-x}Rh_x)_2Si_2 with x = 0 and 0.03 (sim…
The problem of finding of the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic "symmetry broken" solutions of the correlated lattice fermion models beyond the mean-field approximation has been investigated. The calculation of the quasiparticle excitation spectra with damping for the single- and multi-orbital Hubbard model has been performed in the framework of the equation- of-motion method for two-time temperature Green's Functions within a non-perturbative approach. A unified scheme for the construction of Generalized Mean Fields (elastic scattering corrections) and self-energy (inelastic scattering) in …
The generalized decoration-iteration transformation is adopted to treat exactly a hybrid model of doubly decorated two-dimensional lattices, which have localized Ising spins at their nodal lattice sites and itinerant electrons delocalized over pairs of decorating sites. Under the assumption of a half filling of each couple of the decorating sites, the investigated model system exhibits a remarkable spontaneous antiferromagnetic long-range order with an obvious quantum reduction of the staggered magnetization. It is shown that the critical temperature of the spontaneously long-range ordered qua…
The inference of Ying et al. [EPL 104, 67005 (2013)] of a composition-induced change from c-axis ordered-moment alignment in a collinear A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure (AFMI) at small x to ab-plane alignment in an unknown AFM structure (AFMII) at larger x in Ca(1-x)Sr(x)Co(2-y)As(2) with the body-centered tetragonal ThCr2Si2 structure is confirmed. Our major finding is an anomalous magnetic behavior in the crossover region 0.2 < x < 0.3 between these two phases. In this region the magnetic susceptibility versus temperature chi_ab(T) measured with magnetic fields H applied in the ab p…
We analyze the three-point vertex function that describes the coupling of fermionic particle-hole pairs in a metal to spin or charge fluctuations at non-zero momentum. We consider Ward identities, which connect two-particle vertex functions to the self energy, in the framework of a Hubbard model. These are derived using conservation laws following from local symmetries. The generators considered are the spin density and particle density. It is shown that at certain antiferromagnetic critical points, where the quasiparticle effective mass is diverging, the vertex function describing the couplin…
We study the stability of the Quantum Critical Point (QCP) for itinerant ferromagnets commonly described by the Hertz-Millis-Moriya (HMM) theory. We argue that in $D \leq 3$, long-range spatial correlations associated with the Landau damping of the order parameter field generate a universal {\it negative}, non-analytic $|q|^{(D+1)/2}$ contribution to the static magnetic susceptibility $χ_s (q, 0)$, which makes HMM theory unstable. We argue that the actual transition is either towards incommensurate ordering, or first order. We also show that singular corrections are specific to the spin proble…
Dangling edge spins of dimerized two-dimensional spin-1 Heisenberg antiferromagnets are shown to exhibit nonordinary quantum critical correlations, akin to the scaling behavior observed in recently explored spin-1/2 systems. Based on large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we observe remarkable similarities between these two cases, and also examine the crossover to the fundamentally distinct behavior in the one-dimensional limit of strongly coupled edge spins. We complement our numerical analysis by a cluster mean-field theory that encompasses the qualitatively similar behavior for the sp…
A quantum critical point (QCP) between the antiferromagnetic and the paramagnetic phases was realized by applying a hydrostatic pressure of ~ 7 GPa on single crystals of NiS_{2} pyrite with a low residual resistivity, rho_{0}, of 0.5 mu-Omega-cm. We found that the critical behavior of the resistivity, rho, in this clean system contrasts sharply with those observed in its disordered analogue, NiS_{2-x}Se_{x} solid-solution, demonstrating the unexpectedly drastic effect of disorder on the quantum criticality. Over a whole paramagnetic region investigated up to P = 9 GPa, a crossover temperature,…
We perform quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the itinerant-localized periodic Kondo-Heisenberg model for the underdoped cuprates to calculate the associated spin correlation functions. The strong electron correlations are shown to play a key role in the abrupt destruction of the quasi long-range antiferromagnetic order in the lightly doped regime.
We present neutron scattering measurements on powder samples of the spinel FeSc2S4 that reveal a previously unobserved magnetic ordering transition occurring at 11.8(2)~K. Magnetic ordering occurs subsequent to a subtle cubic-to-tetragonal structural transition which distorts Fe coordinating sulfur tetrahedra lifting the orbital degeneracy. The application of 1~GPa hydrostatic pressure appears to destabilize this Néel state, reducing the transition temperature to 8.6(8)~K and redistributing magnetic spectral weight to higher energies. The relative magnitudes of ordered $\langle m \rangle^2\!=\…
We present numerical evidence for the emergence of an extended valence bond solid (VBS) phase at $T=0$ in the kagome $S=1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet with ferromagnetic further-neighbor interactions. The VBS is located at the boundary between two magnetically ordered regions and extends close to the nearest-neighbor Heisenberg point. It exhibits a diamond-like singlet covering pattern with a $12$-site unit-cell. Our results suggest the possibility of a direct, possibly continuous, quantum phase transition from the neighboring $\mathbf{q}=0$ coplanar magnetically ordered phase into the VBS ph…
The phase diagram of the uniaxially anisotropic $s=1$ antiferromagnet on the kagomé lattice includes a critical line exactly described by the classical three-color model. This line is distinct from the standard geometric classical criticality that appears in the classical limit ($s \to \infty$) of the 2D XY model; the $s=1$ geometric T=0 critical line separates two unconventional plaquette-ordered phases that survive to nonzero temperature. The experimentally important correlations at finite temperature and the nature of the transitions into these ordered phases are obtained using the mapping …
In the generic phase diagram of heavy fermion systems, tuning an external parameter such as hydrostatic or chemical pressure modifies the superconducting transition temperature. The superconducting phase forms a dome in the temperature-tuning parameter phase diagram, which is associated with a maximum of the superconducting pairing interaction. Proximity to antiferromagnetism suggests a relation between the disappearance of antiferromagnetic order and superconductivity. We combine muon spin rotation, neutron scattering, and x-ray absorption spectroscopy techniques to gain access to the magneti…
We propose field theories for a deconfined quantum critical point in $SU(3)$ antiferromagnets on the triangular lattice. In particular we consider the continuous transition between a magnetic, three- sublattice color-ordered phase and a trimerized $SU(3)$ singlet phase. Starting from the magnetically ordered state we derive a critical theory in terms of fractional bosonic degrees of freedom, in close analogy to the well-developed description of the $SU(2)$ Neel - valence bond solid (VBS) transition on the square lattice. Our critical theory consists of three coupled $CP^2$ models and we study …
The problem of quantum criticality in the context of itinerant ferro- or metamagnetism has received considerable attention [S. A. Grigera et. al., Science 294, 329 (2001); C. Pfleiderer et. al., Nature, 414, 427 (2001)]. It has been proposed that a new kind of quantum criticality is realised in materials such as MnSi or Sr_3Ru_2O_7. We show based on a mean-field theory that the low-temperature behaviour of the n-layer ruthenates Sr_{n+1}Ru_nO_{3n+1} can be understood as a result of a Van Hove singularity (VHS). We consider a single band whose Fermi energy, E_F, is close to the VHS and deduce a…
Antiferromagnetic (AFM) van der Waals (vdW) materials provide a novel platform for synthetic AFM spintronics, in which the spin-related functionalities are derived from manipulating spin configurations between the layers. Metallic vdW antiferromagnets are expected to have several advantages over the widely-studied insulating counterparts in switching and detecting the spin states through electrical currents but have been much less explored due to the lack of suitable materials. Here, utilizing the extreme sensitivity of the vdW interlayer magnetism to material composition, we report the itiner…
We study the conductivity of a 3D disordered metal close to the antiferromagnetic instability within the framework of the spin-fermion model using the diagrammatic technique. We calculate the interaction correction $δσ(ω,T)$ to the conductivity, assuming that the latter is dominated by the disorder scattering, and the interaction is weak. Although the fermionic scattering rate shows critical behaviour on the entire Fermi surface, the interaction correction is dominated by the processes near the hot spots, narrow regions of the Fermi-surface corresponding to the strongest spin-fermion scatterin…
Field-induced magnetic ordering in the structurally disordered quantum magnets Ni(Cl$_{1-x}$Br$_x$)$_2$$\cdot$4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$, $x=8$% and 13%, is studied by means of neutron diffraction. The order parameter critical exponent is found to be very close to its value $β=0.5$ expected for magnetic Bose-Einstein condensation in the absence of disorder. This result applies to temperatures down to 40 mK, and a 1 T range in magnetic field. The crossover exponent is found to be $ϕ\sim 0.4$, for temperature ranges as small as 300 mK. Possible reasons for a discrepancy with recent numerical simulations an…
We study the ground-state (gs) phase diagram of the frustrated spin-1/2 $J_{1}$-$J_{2}$-$J_{3}$ antiferromagnet with $J_{2} = J_{3} =κJ_1$ on the honeycomb lattice, using coupled-cluster theory and exact diagonalization methods. We present results for the gs energy, magnetic order parameter, spin-spin correlation function, and plaquette valence-bond crystal (PVBC) susceptibility. We find a Néel antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase for $κ< κ_{c_{1}} \approx 0.47$, a collinear striped AFM phase for $κ> κ_{c_{2}} \approx 0.60$, and a paramagnetic PVBC phase for $κ_{c_{1}} \lesssim κ\lesssim κ_{c_{2}}$. …
We analyze emergent quantum multi-criticality for strongly interacting, massless Dirac fermions in two spatial dimensions ($d=2$) within the framework of Gross-Neveu-Yukawa models, by considering the competing order parameters that give rise to fully gapped (insulating or superconducting) ground states. We focus only on those competing orders, which can be rotated into each other by generators of an exact or emergent chiral symmetry of massless Dirac fermions, and break $O(S_1)$ and $O(S_2)$ symmetries in the ordered phase. Performing a renormalization group analysis by using the $ε=(3-d)$ exp…
Recently it was argued that quantum phase transitions can be radically different from classical phase transitions with as a highlight the 'deconfined critical points' exhibiting fractionalization of quantum numbers due to Berry phase effects. Such transitions are supposed to occur in frustrated ('$J_1$-$J_2$') quantum magnets. We have developed a novel renormalization approach for such systems which is fully respecting the underlying lattice structure. According to our findings, another profound phenomenon is around the corner: a fluctuation induced (order-out-of-disorder) first order transiti…
These three metallic systems do not exhibit any magnetic ordering despite experiments show the existence of localized moments with large antiferromagnetic exchange: this is a consequence of the strong geometric frustration (Y(Sc)Mn_{2} and LiV_{2}O_{4} have the Pyrochlore structure, while beta-Mn has a more complicated frustrated structure). Another common feature is their very large specific heat coefficient γ=C/T (420 mJ mole^{-1} K^{-2} for LiV_{2}O_{4}). Several explanations have been proposed for this ''3d heavy fermion behavior'', including a 3d-Kondo effect. However the similarities bet…
We re-examine the experimental results for the magnetic response function $χ''({\bf q}, E, T)$, for ${\bf q}$ around the anti-ferromagnetic vectors ${\bf Q}$, in the quantum-critical region, obtained by inelastic neutron scattering, on an Fe-based superconductor, and on a heavy Fermion compound. The motivation is to compare the results with a recent theory, which shows that the fluctuations in a generic anti-ferromagnetic model for itinerant fermions map to those in the universality class of the dissipative quantum-XY model. The quantum-critical fluctuations in this model, in a range of parame…
