We present neutron scattering measurements on powder samples of the spinel FeSc2S4 that reveal a previously unobserved magnetic ordering transition occurring at 11.8(2)~K. Magnetic ordering occurs subsequent to a subtle cubic-to-tetragonal structural transition which distorts Fe coordinating sulfur tetrahedra lifting the orbital degeneracy. The application of 1~GPa hydrostatic pressure appears to destabilize this Néel state, reducing the transition temperature to 8.6(8)~K and redistributing magnetic spectral weight to higher energies. The relative magnitudes of ordered $\langle m \rangle^2\!=\!3.1(2)$ and fluctuating moments $\langle δm \rangle^2\!=\!13(1)$ show that the magnetically ordered ground state of FeSc2S4 is drastically renormalized and in proximity to criticality.
We revisit an antiferromagnetic quantum phase transition with $\bm{Q} = 2 \bm{k}_{F}$, where $\bm{Q}$ is an ordering wave vector and $\bm{k}_{F}$ is a Fermi momentum. Reformulating the Hertz-Moriya-Millis theory within the strong coupling approach to diagonalize the spin-fermion coupling term and performing the scaling analysis for an effective field theory with quantum corrections in the Eliashberg approximation, we propose a novel interacting fixed point for this antiferromagnetic quantum phase transition, where antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations become locally critical to interact with ren…
Hertz-Moriya-Millis theory with dynamical critical exponent $z = 2$ has been proposed to describe antiferromagnetic quantum criticality in itinerant electron systems. In this study we show that the dynamical critical exponent changes from $z = 2$ to $z = 3$ at low temperatures, which results from effective long-range interactions between spin fluctuations, generated by Fermi-surface fluctuations beyond the Eliashberg framework. We claim that the underlying physics for the $z = 3$ antiferromagnetic quantum criticality is the emergence of fermionized skyrmion excitations at low energies, which f…
The interpretation of the magnetic phase diagrams of strongly correlated electron systems remains controversial. In particular, the physics of quantum phase transitions, which occur at zero temperature, is still enigmatic. Heavy-fermion compounds aretextbook examples of quantum criticality, as doping, or the application of pressure or a magnetic field can lead to a quantum phase transition between a magnetically ordered state and a paramagnetic regime. A central question concerns the microscopic nature of the critical quantum fluctuations. Are they antiferromagnetic or of local origin? Here we…
We analyze the three-point vertex function that describes the coupling of fermionic particle-hole pairs in a metal to spin or charge fluctuations at non-zero momentum. We consider Ward identities, which connect two-particle vertex functions to the self energy, in the framework of a Hubbard model. These are derived using conservation laws following from local symmetries. The generators considered are the spin density and particle density. It is shown that at certain antiferromagnetic critical points, where the quasiparticle effective mass is diverging, the vertex function describing the couplin…
A quantum critical point (QCP) between the antiferromagnetic and the paramagnetic phases was realized by applying a hydrostatic pressure of ~ 7 GPa on single crystals of NiS_{2} pyrite with a low residual resistivity, rho_{0}, of 0.5 mu-Omega-cm. We found that the critical behavior of the resistivity, rho, in this clean system contrasts sharply with those observed in its disordered analogue, NiS_{2-x}Se_{x} solid-solution, demonstrating the unexpectedly drastic effect of disorder on the quantum criticality. Over a whole paramagnetic region investigated up to P = 9 GPa, a crossover temperature,…
Motivated by the proposal of topological quantum paramagnet in the diamond lattice antiferromagnet NiRh$_2$O$_4$, we propose a minimal model to describe the magnetic interaction and properties of the diamond material with the spin-one local moments. Our model includes the first and second neighbor Heisenberg interactions as well as a local single-ion spin anisotropy that is allowed by the spin-one nature of the local moment and the tetragonal symmetry of the system. We point out that there exists a quantum phase transition from a trivial quantum paramagnet when the single-ion spin anisotropy i…
Using neutron powder diffraction and Monte-Carlo simulations we show that a spin-liquid regime emerges at $all compositions in the diamond-lattice antiferromagnets Co(Al1-xCox)2O4. This spin-liquid regime induced by frustration due to the second-neighbour exchange coupling J2, is gradually superseded by antiferromagnetic collinear long-range order (k=0) at low temperatures. Upon substitution of Al3+ by Co3+ in the octahedral B-site the temperature range occupied by the spin-liquid regime narrows and TN increases. To explain the experimental observations we considered magnetic anisotropy D or t…
We study the conductivity of a 3D disordered metal close to the antiferromagnetic instability within the framework of the spin-fermion model using the diagrammatic technique. We calculate the interaction correction $δσ(ω,T)$ to the conductivity, assuming that the latter is dominated by the disorder scattering, and the interaction is weak. Although the fermionic scattering rate shows critical behaviour on the entire Fermi surface, the interaction correction is dominated by the processes near the hot spots, narrow regions of the Fermi-surface corresponding to the strongest spin-fermion scatterin…
The easily tuned balance among competing interactions in Kondo-lattice metals allows access to a zero-temperature, continuous transition between magnetically ordered and disordered phases, a quantum-critical point (QCP). Indeed, these highly correlated electron materials are prototypes for discovering and exploring quantum-critical states. Theoretical models proposed to account for the strange thermodynamic and electrical transport properties that emerge around the QCP of a Kondo lattice assume the presence of an indefinitely large number of itinerant charge carriers. Here, we report a systema…
Systems with strong electron-phonon couplings typically exhibit various forms of charge order, while strong electron-electron interactions lead to magnetism. We use determinant quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) calculations to solve a model on a square lattice with a caricature of these interactions. In the limit where electron-electron interactions dominate it has antiferromagnetic (AF) order, while where electron-phonon coupling dominates there is columnar valence-bond solid (VBS) order. We find a novel intervening phase that hosts coexisting nematic and antiferromagnetic orders. We have also found…
Magnetic correlations in all four phases of pure and doped vanadium sesquioxide V_2O_3 have been examined by magnetic thermal neutron scattering. While the antiferromagnetic insulator can be accounted for by a Heisenberg localized spin model, the long range order in the antiferromagnetic metal is an incommensurate spin-density-wave, resulting from a Fermi surface nesting instability. Spin dynamics in the strongly correlated metal are dominated by spin fluctuations in the Stoner electron-hole continuum. Furthermore, our results in metallic V_2O_3 represent an unprecedentedly complete characteri…
We investigate the continuous quantum phase transition from an antiferromagnetic metal to a heavy fermion liquid based on the Kondo lattice model in two dimensions. We propose that antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations and conduction electrons fractionalize into neutral bosonic spinons and charged spinless fermions at the quantum critical point. This deconfined quantum criticality leads us to establish a critical field theory in terms of the fractionalized fields interacting via emergent U(1) gauge fields. The critical field theory not only predicts non-Fermi liquid physics near the quantum crit…
The effect of pressure on the unique electronic state of the antiferromagnetic (AF) compound EuCu2Ge2 has been measured in a wide temperature range from 10 mK to 300 K by electrical resistivity measurements up to 10 GPa. The Neel temperature of TN = 15 K at ambient pressure increases monotonically with increasing pressure and becomes a maximum of TN = 27 K at 6.2 GPa but suddenly drops to zero at Pc = 6.5 GPa, suggesting the quantum critical point (QCP) of the valence transition of Eu from a nearly divalent state to that with trivalent weight. The rhomag0 and A values obtained from the low-tem…
Physics of quantum critical point is one of the most perplexing topics in current condensed-matter physics. Its conclusive understanding is forestalled by the scarcity of experimental systems displaying novel aspects of quantum criticality. We present a comprehensive experimental evidence of a magnetic field tuned tricritical point separating paramagnetic, antiferromagnetic and metamagnetic phases in novel compound CePtIn$_4$. Analyzing field variations of its magnetic susceptibility, magnetoresistance and specific heat at very low temperatures, we trace modifications of antiferromagnetic stru…
We study dynamical phase transitions from antiferromagnetic to paramagnetic states driven by an interaction quench in the fermionic Hubbard model using the nonequilibrium dynamical mean-field theory. We identify two dynamical transition points where the relaxation behavior qualitatively changes: one corresponds to the thermal phase transition at which the order parameter decays critically slowly in a power law $\propto t^{-1/2}$, and the other is connected to the existence of nonthermal antiferromagnetic order in systems with effective temperature above the thermal critical temperature. The fr…
Kinetic properties of a two dimensional model of fermions interacting with antiferromagnetic spin excitations near the quantum critical point (QCP) are considered. The temperature or doping are assumed to be sufficiently high, such that the pseudogap does not appear. In contrast to standard spin-fermion models, it is assumed that there are intrinsic inhomogeneities in the system suppressing space correlations of the antiferromagnetic excitations. It is argued that the inhomogeneities in the spin excitations in the "strange metal" phase can be a consequence of existence of $π$-shifted domain wa…
We study the phase diagram and quantum critical region of one of the fundamental models for electronic correlations: the periodic Anderson model. Employing the recently developed dynamical vertex approximation, we find a phase transition between a zero-temperature antiferromagnetic insulator and a Kondo insulator. In the quantum critical region, we determine a critical exponent $γ\!=\!2$ for the antiferromagnetic susceptibility. At higher temperatures, we have free spins with $γ\!=\!1$ instead, whereas at lower temperatures, there is an even stronger increase and suppression of the susceptibil…
Motivated by the recent activities on the Ni-based diamond lattice antiferromagnet NiRh$_2$O$_4$, we theoretically explore on a general ground the unique spin and orbital physics for the Ni$^{2+}$ ions with a $3d^8$ electron configuration in the tetrahedral crystal field environment and on a diamond lattice Mott insulator. The superexchange interaction between the local moments usually favors magnetic orders. Due to the particular electron configuration of the Ni$^{2+}$ ion with a partially filled upper $t_{2g}$ level and a fully filled lower $e_g$ level, the atomic spin-orbit coupling becomes…
The extent to which quantum criticality drives the physics of iron pnictides is a central question in the field. Earlier theoretical considerations were based on an effective field theory, and the proposed realization in P-doped iron arsenides has received extensive experimental evidence. To connect the quantum critical behavior with the underlying electronic physics, it is important to analyze it within microscopic models. Here, we do so for a multi-orbital model containing both Hubbard and Hund's interactions, by a variational Monte Carlo method based on Jastrow-Slater wave functions that al…
We study quantum phase transitions in Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chains with a staggered power-law decaying long-range interactions. Employing the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) algorithm and the fidelity susceptibility as the criticality measure, we establish more accurate values of quantum critical points than the results obtained from the spin-wave approximation, quantum Monte Carlo and DMRG in literatures. The deviation is especially evident for strong long-range interactions. We extend isotropic long-range interactions to the anisotropic cases and find that kaleidoscope of …
We investigate the zero-temperature phase diagram of the nearest-neighbor kagome antiferromagnet in the presence of Dzyaloshinksii-Moriya interaction. We develop a theory for the transition between Z2 spin liquids with bosonic spinons and a phase with antiferromagnetic long-range order. Connections to recent numerical studies and experiments are discussed.
Applying the (infinite) density-matrix renormalisation group technique, we explore the effect of an explicit dimerisation on the ground-state phase diagram of the spin-1 $XXZ$ chain with single-ion anisotropy $D$. We demonstrate that the Haldane phase between large-$D$ and antiferromagnetic phases survives up to a critical dimerisation only. As a further new characteristic the dimerisation induces a direct continuous Ising quantum phase transition between the large-$D$ and antiferromagnetic phases with central charge $c=1/2$, which terminates at a critical end-point where $c=7/10$. Calculating…
Quantum criticality describes the collective fluctuations of matter undergoing a second-order phase transition at zero temperature. It is being discussed in a number of strongly correlated electron systems. A prototype case occurs in the heavy fermion metals, in which antiferromagnetic quantum critical points have been explicitly observed. Here, I address two types of antiferromagnetic quantum critical points. In addition to the standard description based on the fluctuations of the antiferromagnetic order, a local quantum critical point is also considered. It contains inherently quantum modes …
Exploration of low temperature phase transitions associated with quantum critical point is one of the most mystifying fields of research which is under intensive focus in recent times. In this work, through comprehensive experimental evidences, we report the possibility of achieving quantum criticality in the neighborhood of a magnetic field-tuned tricritical point separating paramagnetic, antiferromagnetic and metamagnetic phases in a magnetic insulator, DyVO4. Magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity indicate to the presence of a long-range second order antiferromagnetic transition at TN ~ …
We present a functional renormalization group analysis of a quantum critical point in two-dimensional metals involving Fermi surface reconstruction due to the onset of spin-density wave order. Its critical theory is controlled by a fixed point in which the order parameter and fermionic quasiparticles are strongly coupled and acquire spectral functions with a common dynamic critical exponent. We obtain results for critical exponents and for the variation in the quasiparticle spectral weight around the Fermi surface. Our analysis is implemented on a two-band variant of the spin-fermion model whi…
We have studied the quantum phase transition between the antiferromagnetic and spin liquid phase for the two dimensional anisotropic Kondo-necklace model. The bond operator formalism has been implemented to transform the spin Hamiltonian to a bosonic one. We have used the Green's function approach including a hard core repulsion to find the low energy excitation spectrum of the model. The bosonic excitations become gapless at the quantum critical point where the phase transition from the Kondo singlet state to long range antiferromagnetic order takes place. We have studied the effect of both i…
We have studied the evolution of the weakly first order antiferromagnetic transition in heavy fermion Yb$_3$Pt$_4$ using a combination of specific heat, magnetic susceptibility, and electrical resistivity experiments. We show that magnetic fields suppress the Neel temperature, as well as the specific heat jump, the latent heat, and the entropy of the transition, driving a critical endpoint at 1.2 K and 1.5 T. At higher fields, the antiferromagnetic transition becomes second order, and this line of transitions in turn terminates at a quantum critical point at 1.62 T. Both the ordered and high f…
The $S=1/2$ square-lattice $J$-$Q$ model hosts a deconfined quantum phase transition between antiferromagnetic and dimerized (valence-bond solid) ground states. We here study two deformations of this model -- a term projecting staggered singlets as well as a modulation of the $J$ terms forming alternating "staircases" of strong and weak couplings. The first deformation preserves all lattice symmetries. Using quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we show that it nevertheless introduces a second relevant field, likely by producing topological defects. The second deformation induces helical valence-bo…
We demonstrate that the low-energy effective theory for a deconfined quantum critical point in $d=2+1$ dimensions contains a leading order contribution given by the Faddeev-Skyrme model. The Faddeev-Skyrme term is shown to give rise to the crucial Maxwell term in the CP$^1$ field theory governing the deconfined quantum critical point. We derive the leading contribution to the spin stiffness near the quantum critical point and show that it exhibits a logarithmic correction to scaling of the same type as recently observed numerically in low dimensional models of quantum spin systems featuring a …
We report spontaneous appearance of antiferromagnetic order in a model gapped quantum paramagnet Ni(Cl$_{1-x}$Br$_x$)$_2$$\cdot$4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$ induced by a change in bromine concentration x. This transition is qualitatively similar to a z = 1 magnetic quantum critical point. However, the observed critical scaling of thermodynamic and magnetic properties has rather unusual critical exponents.
We report on magnetization, sound velocity, and magnetocaloric-effect measurements of the Ising-like spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic chain system BaCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ as a function of temperature down to 1.3 K and applied transverse magnetic field up to 60 T. While across the Néel temperature of $T_N\sim5$ K anomalies in magnetization and sound velocity confirm the antiferromagnetic ordering transition, at the lowest temperature the field-dependent measurements reveal a sharp softening of sound velocity $v(B)$ and a clear minimum of temperature $T(B)$ at $B^{c,3D}_\perp=21.4$ T, indicating the suppre…
We study the phase diagram of an effective model of competing nematic and antiferromagnetic orders of interacting electrons on the Bernal-stacked honeycomb bilayer, as relevant for bilayer graphene. In the noninteracting limit, the model features a semimetallic ground state with quadratic band touching points at the Fermi level. Taking the effects of short-range interactions into account, we demonstrate the existence of an extended region in the mean-field phase diagram characterized by coexisting nematic and antiferromagnetic orders. By means of a renormalization group approach, we reveal tha…
A quantum critical point arises at a continuous transformation between distinct phases of matter at zero temperature. Studies in antiferromagnetic heavy fermion materials have revealed that quantum criticality has several classes, with an unconventional type that involves a critical destruction of the Kondo entanglement. In order to understand such varieties, it is important to extend the materials basis beyond the usual setting of intermetallic compounds. Here we show that a nickel oxypnictide, CeNiAsO, displays a heavy-fermion antiferromagnetic quantum critical point as a function of either …
The magnetic properties of the alkaline earth oxocuprate BaCu3O4 are investigated. We show that the characteristic Cu3O4 layers of this material can be described with diamond chains of antiferromagnetically coupled Cu 1/2 spins with only a weak coupling between two adjacent chains. These Cu3O4 layers seem to represent a so far unique system of weakly coupled one-dimensional magnetic objects where the local AF ordering of the Cu2+ ions leads to an actual net magnetic moment of an isolated diamond chain. We demonstrate a magnetic transition at a high Néel temperature T_{N}=336 K.
We investigate the metallic transport in the organic superconductor (TMTSF)2PF6 under pressure within the framework of the spin density wave theory in the proximity of a Peierls quantum critical point (QCP). We use a simple transport model of hot and cold regions around the Fermi surface, driven by the proximity to the QCP in order to provide a template to fit the experimental results. Successful agreement with the data comforts the interpretation of extended criticality around the antiferromagnetic QCP in the normal phase of quasi one-dimensional organic superconductors.

Two ordering states, antiferromagnetism and nematicity, have been observed in most iron-based superconductors (SCs). In contrast to those SCs, the newly discovered SC CaK(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_4$As$_4$ exhibits an antiferromagnetic (AFM) state, called hedgehog spin-vortex crystal structure, without nematic order, providing the opportunity for the investigation into the relationship between spin fluctuations and SC without any effects of nematic fluctuations. Our $^{75}$As nuclear magnetic resonance studies on CaK(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_4$As$_4$ (0$\le x\le$ 0.049) revealed that CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ is loc…
We use an estimator of quantum criticality based on the entanglement entropy to discuss the ground state properties of the 1D anisotropic Kondo necklace model. We found that the T=0 phase diagram of the model is described by a critical line separating an antiferromagnetic phase from a Kondo singlet state. Moreover we calculate the conformal anomaly on the critical line and obtained that c tends to 0.5 as the thermodynamic limit is reached. We conclude that these transitions belong to Ising universality class being, therefore, second order transitions instead of infinite order as claimed before…
Quantum criticality in Yb(Rh0.97Co0.03)2Si2 is investigated by means of resistivity and magnetoresistance. The partial substitution of Co leads to a stabilization of the magnetism as expected according to the application of chemical pressure for Yb systems. However, the signature of the Kondo-breakdown remains at the same position in the temperature-magnetic field phase diagram compared to stoichiometric YbRh2Si2. As a consequence, the Kondo-breakdown is situated within the antiferromagnetic phase. These results fit well within the global phase diagram under chemical pressure [1].
Quantum phase transitions have captured the interest of a large community in condensed-matter and atom physics research. The common feature of these very different material classes lies in the fact that the competition between low-energy scales can be tuned by a nonthermal parameter, such as pressure, magnetic or electric field, and chemical composition for the condensed-matter systems. In heavy-fermion materials, the strong exchange J between f-electrons and conduction electrons can lead to quenching of the f-electron-derived (nearly) localized magnetic moments via the Kondo effect or, if J b…
We analyze a possibility of quantum criticality (gaplessness) in dimerized antiferromagnetic two- and three-leg spin-1/2 ladders. Contrary to earlier studies of these models, we examine different dimerization patterns in the ladder. We find that ladders with the columnar dimerization order have lower zero-temperature energies and they are always gapped. For the staggered dimerization order, we find the quantum critical lines, in agreement with earlier analyses. The bond mean-field theory we apply, demonstrates its quantitative accuracy and agrees with available numerical results. We conclude t…
We report the Nernst effect (v) and thermoelectric power (S) data for the Ce2PdIn8 heavy-fermion compound. Both S and v behave anomalously at low temperatures: the thermopower shows a Kondo-like maximum at T = 37 K, while the Nernst coefficient becomes greatly enhanced and field dependent below T ~ 30 K. In the zero-T limit S/T and v/T diverge logarithmically, what is related to occurrence of the quantum critical point (QCP). Presented results suggest that the antiferromagnetic spin-density-wave scenario may be applicable to QCP in Ce2PdIn8.
For coupled-dimer magnets with quenched disorder, we introduce a generalization of the bond-operator method, appropriate to describe both singlet and magnetically ordered phases. This allows for a numerical calculation of the magnetic excitations at all energies across the phase diagram, including the strongly inhomogeneous Griffiths regime near quantum criticality. We apply the method to the bilayer Heisenberg model with bond randomness and characterize both the broadening of excitations and the transfer of spectral weight induced by disorder. Inside the antiferromagnetic phase this model fea…
A general understanding of quantum phase transitions in strongly correlated materials is still lacking. By exploiting a cutting-edge quantum many-body approach, the dynamical vertex approximation, we make an important progress, determining the quantum critical properties of the antiferromagnetic transition in the fundamental model for correlated electrons, the Hubbard model in three dimensions. In particular, we demonstrate that -in contradiction to the conventional Hertz-Millis-Moriya theory- its quantum critical behavior is driven by the Kohn anomalies of the Fermi surface, even when electro…
We present the results of inelastic neutron scattering measurements, performed near the antiferromagnetic quantum critical point in Ce(Ru_{0.24} Fe_{0.76})_2 Ge_2. Both local and long range fluctuations of the local moments are observed, but due to the Kondo effect only the latter are critical. We propose a phenomenological expression which fits the energy $E$, temperature T and wave vector q dependences of the generalized susceptibility chi(q,E,T), describing the non-Fermi liquid E/T scaling found at every wave vector.
Magnetization processes of Ising models with frustration on diamond hierarchical lattices, which contain vertices with high coordination numbers, are exactly obtained at zero temperature. In antiferromagnetic systems, the magnetization cannot saturate under finite magnetic fields owing to the competition between the antiferromagnetic and Zeeman interactions and the intrinsic long-range nature of hierarchical lattices. For the zero-field classical spin-liquid phase found in [Kobayashi et al., J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 78, 074004 (2009)], an infinitely small applied magnetic field can induce an infinit…
We consider the antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 $XXZ$ Heisenberg model on a frustrated diamond-chain lattice in a $z$- or $x$-aligned external magnetic field. We use the strong-coupling approach to elaborate an effective description in the low-temperature strong-field regime. The obtained effective models are spin-1/2 $XY$ chains which are exactly solvable through the Jordan-Wigner fermionization. We perform exact-diagonalization studies of the magnetization curves to test the quality of the effective description. The results may have relevance for the description of the azurite spin-chain compound…
The ground state of a molecular diamond-lattice compound (ET)Ag$_4$(CN)$_5$ is investigated by the magnetization and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. We found that the system exhibits antiferromagnetic long-range ordering with weak ferromagnetism at a high temperature of 102 K owing to the strong electron correlation. The spin susceptibility is well fitted into the diamond-lattice Heisenberg model with a nearest neighbor exchange coupling of 230 K, indicating the less frustrated interactions. The transition temperature elevates up to $\sim$195 K by applying pressure of 2 GPa, which rec…
Inspired by recent conflicting views on the order of the phase transition from an antiferromagnetic Neel state to a valence bond solid, we use the functional renormalization group to study the underlying quantum critical field theory which couples two complex matter fields to a non-compact gauge field. In our functional renormalization group approach we only expand in covariant derivatives of the fields and use a truncation in which the full field dependence of all wave-function renormalization functions is kept. While we do find critical exponents which agree well with some quantum Monte Carl…
We present numerical evidence for the emergence of an extended valence bond solid (VBS) phase at $T=0$ in the kagome $S=1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet with ferromagnetic further-neighbor interactions. The VBS is located at the boundary between two magnetically ordered regions and extends close to the nearest-neighbor Heisenberg point. It exhibits a diamond-like singlet covering pattern with a $12$-site unit-cell. Our results suggest the possibility of a direct, possibly continuous, quantum phase transition from the neighboring $\mathbf{q}=0$ coplanar magnetically ordered phase into the VBS ph…
We report the discovery of a spin one diamond lattice in NiRh2O4. This spinel undergoes a cubic to tetragonal phase transition at T = 440 K that leaves all nearest neighbor interactions equivalent. In the tetragonal phase, magnetization measurements show a Ni2+ effective moment of p(eff) = 3.3(1) and dominant antiferromagnetic interactions with Θ(CW) = -11.3(7) K. No phase transition to a long-range magnetically ordered state is observed by specific heat measurements down to T = 0.1 K. Inelastic neutron scattering measurements on sub-stoichiometric NiRh2O4 reveal possible valence-bond behavior…
This paper is concerned with the possibility of a direct second order transition out of a collinear Neel phase to a paramagnetic spin liquid in two dimensional quantum antiferromagnets. Contrary to conventional wisdom, we show that such second order quantum transitions can potentially occur to certain spin liquid states popular in theories of the cuprates. We provide a theory of this transition and study its universal properties in an $ε$ expansion. The existence of such a transition has a number of interesting implications for spin liquid based approaches to the underdoped cuprates. In partic…
