The spin- and charge-density-wave order parameters of the itinerant antiferromagnet chromium are measured directly with non-resonant x-ray diffraction as the system is driven towards its quantum critical point with high pressure using a diamond anvil cell. The exponential decrease of the spin and charge diffraction intensities with pressure confirms the harmonic scaling of spin and charge, while the evolution of the incommensurate ordering vector provides important insight into the difference between pressure and chemical doping as means of driving quantum phase transitions. Measurement of the charge density wave over more than two orders of magnitude of diffraction intensity provides the clearest demonstration to date of a weakly-coupled, BCS-like ground state. Evidence for the coexistence of this weakly-coupled ground state with high-energy excitations and pseudogap formation above the ordering temperature in chromium, the charge-ordered perovskite manganites, and the blue bronzes, among other such systems, raises fundamental questions about the distinctions between weak and strong coupling.
We consider electronic and magnetic properties of chromium, a well-known itinerant antiferromagnet, by a combination of density functional theory (DFT) and dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). We find that electronic correlation effects in chromium, in contrast to its neighbours in the periodic table, are weak, leading to the quasiparticle mass enhancement factor ${m^*/m \approx 1.2}$. Our results for local spin-spin correlation functions and distribution of weigths of atomic configurations indicate that the local magnetic moments are not formed. Similarly to previous results of DFT at ambient …
The critical properties of flux-grown single-crystalline quasi-two-dimensional weak itinerant ferromagnet Cr$_{0.62}$Te were investigated by bulk dc magnetization around the paramagnetic (PM) to ferromagnetic (FM) phase transition. Critical exponents $β= 0.315(7)$ with a critical temperature $T_c = 230.6(3)$ K and $γ= 1.81(2)$ with $T_c = 229.1(1)$ K are obtained by the Kouvel-Fisher method whereas $δ= 6.35(4)$ is obtained by a critical isotherm analysis at $T_c = 230$ K. With these obtained exponents, the magnetization-field-temperature curves collapse into two independent curves following a …
The dynamics of the S = 3=2 kagome antiferromagnet chromium jarosite, KCr$_3$(OD)$_6$(SO$_4$)$_2$ was studied using high-resolution neutron time-of-flight spectroscopy on a polycrystalline sample with a nearly stoichiometric magnetic lattice (2.8(2)% Cr vacancies). Neutron spectroscopy reveals diffuse spin wave excitations in the ordered phase with an incomplete gap and significant finite life-time broadening as well as a pronounced zero mode. Using linear spin wave theory, we estimate the exchange couplings, with the leading nearest neighbor value being $J_1$ = 0:884 meV. Above $T_N$ diffuse …
The fragile nature of itinerant magnetism can be exploited using non-thermal parameters to study quantum criticality. The recently discovered quantum critical point (QCP) in the Sc-doped (hole-like doping) itinerant antiferromagnet TiAu (Ti$_{1-x}$Sc$_{x}$Au) raised questions about the effects of the crystal and electronic structures on the overall magnetic behavior. In this study, doping with V (electron-like doping) in Ti$_{1-x}$V$_{x}$Au introduces chemical disorder which suppresses antiferromagnetic order from $T_{\rm N} =$ 36~K for $x = 0$ down to 10 K for $x =$ 0.15, whereupon a solubili…
Induced-Moment Weak Antiferromagnetism and Orbital Order on the Itinerant-Localized Duality Model with Nested Fermi Surface: A Possible Origin of Exotic Magnetism in URu${}_{2}$Si$_{2}$
Very often the skyrmions form a triangular crystal in chiral magnets. Here we study the effect of itinerant electrons on the structure of skyrmion crystal (SkX) on triangular lattice using Kondo lattice model in the large coupling limit and treating the localized spins as classical vectors. To simulate the system, we employ hybrid Markov Chain Monte Carlo method (hMCMC) which includes electron diagonalization in each MCMC update for classical spins. We present the low temperature results for $12\times 12$ system at electron density $n=1/3$ which show a sudden jump in skyrmion number when we in…
In this study, we have performed the magnetocaloric effect and the specific heat measurements of chromium spinel oxide HgCr$_2$O$_4$, wherein the magnetic Cr$^{3+}$ ions form a highly frustrated pyrochlore lattice with significant spin-lattice coupling. In addition to the known magnetic-field-induced phases, our thermodynamic measurements detect a novel quantum phase just before the saturation of the magnetization, which has not been expected from the classical theories of the pyrochlore lattice antiferromagnet with spin-lattice coupling. Based on recent theoretical model calculation, we discu…
Calculation of generalized spin stiffness constant of strongly correlated doped quantum antiferromagnet on two-dimensional lattice and it's application to effective exchange constant for semi-itinerant systems
When suppressing the itinerant antiferromagnetism in chromium by doping with the isostructual itinerant ferromagnet iron, a dome of spin-glass behavior emerges around a putative quantum critical point at an iron concentration $x \approx 0.15$. Here, we report a comprehensive investigation of polycrystalline samples of Fe$_{x}$Cr$_{1-x}$ in the range $0.05 \leq x \leq 0.30$ using x-ray powder diffraction, magnetization, ac susceptibility, and neutron depolarization measurements, complemented by specific heat and electrical resistivity data for $x = 0.15$. Besides antiferromagnetic ($x < 0.15$) …
FeCrAs displays an unusual electrical response that is neither metallic in character nor divergent at low temperatures, as expected for an insulating response, and therefore it has been termed a "nonmetal-metal". We carried out neutron scattering experiments on powder and single crystal samples to study the magnetic dynamics and critical fluctuations in FeCrAs. Magnetic neutron diffraction measurements find Cr3+ magnetic order setting in at 115 K with the mean-field critical exponent. Neutron spectroscopy, however, observes gapless stiff magnetic fluctuations emanating from magnetic positions …
The energy and momentum selectivity of time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy is exploited to address the ultrafast dynamics of the antiferromagnetic spin density wave (SDW) transition photoexcited in epitaxial thin films of chromium. We are able to quantitatively extract the evolution of the SDW order parameter $Δ$ through the ultrafast phase transition. $Δ$ is defined by the transient temperature of the thermalized electron gas. The complete destruction of SDW order on a sub-100~fs time scale is observed, much faster than for conventional charge density wave materials. Our resul…
The most fascinating feature of certain two-dimensional (2D) gapless quantum spin liquid (QSL) is that their spinon excitations behave like the fermionic carriers of a paramagnetic metal. The spinon Fermi surface is then expected to produce a linear increase of the thermal conductivity with temperature that should manifest via a residual value ($κ_0/T$) in the zero-temperature limit. However, this linear in T behavior has been reported for very few QSL candidates. Here, we studied the ultralow-temperature thermal conductivity of an effective spin-1/2 triangular QSL candidate Na$_2$BaCo(PO$_4$)…
Exact evidence for the spontaneous antiferromagnetic long-range order in the two-dimensional hybrid model of localized Ising spins and itinerant electrons
We address the long-standing problem of the microscopic origin of the richly diverse phenomena in the chromium breathing pyrochlore material family. Combining electronic structure and renormalization group techniques we resolve the magnetic interactions and analyze their reciprocal-space susceptibility. We show that the physics of these materials is principally governed by long-range Heisenberg Hamiltonian interactions, a hitherto unappreciated fact. Our calculations uncover that in these isostructural compounds, the choice of chalcogen triggers a proximity of the materials to classical spin l…

Antiferromagnetic (AFM) van der Waals (vdW) materials provide a novel platform for synthetic AFM spintronics, in which the spin-related functionalities are derived from manipulating spin configurations between the layers. Metallic vdW antiferromagnets are expected to have several advantages over the widely-studied insulating counterparts in switching and detecting the spin states through electrical currents but have been much less explored due to the lack of suitable materials. Here, utilizing the extreme sensitivity of the vdW interlayer magnetism to material composition, we report the itiner…
Metallic quantum criticality is among the central theme in the understanding of correlated electronic systems, and converging results between analytical and numerical approaches are still under calling. In this work, we develop state-of-art large scale quantum Monte Carlo simulation technique and systematically investigate the itinerant quantum critical point on a 2D square lattice with antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations at wavevector $\mathbf{Q}=(π,π)$ -- a problem that resembles the Fermi surface setup and low-energy antiferromagnetic fluctuations in high-Tc cuprates and other critical meta…
$^{59}$Co and $^{31}$P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements in external magnetic and zero magnetic fields have been performed to investigate the magnetic properties of the A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) CaCo$_2$P$_2$. NMR data, especially, the nuclear spin lattice relaxation rates 1/$T_1$ exhibiting a clear peak, provide clear evidence for the AFM transition at a Néel temperature of $T_{\rm N}\sim$110~K. The magnetic fluctuations in the paramagnetic state were found to be three-dimensional ferromagnetic, suggesting ferromagnetic interaction between Co spins in the ${\it ab}$ plane cha…
