We report results of 75As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments on a self-flux grown single crystal of BaFe2As2. A first-order antiferromagnetic (AF) transition near 135 K was detected by the splitting of NMR lines, which is accompanied by simultaneous structural transition as evidenced by a sudden large change of the electric field gradient tensor at the As site. The NMR results lead almost uniquely to the stripe spin structure in the AF phase. The data of spin-lattice relaxation rate indicate development of anisotropic spin fluctuations of the stripe-type with decreasing temperature in the paramagnetic phase.
Magnetization, nuclear magnetic resonance, high-resolution x-ray diffraction and magnetic field-dependent neutron diffraction measurements reveal a novel magnetic ground state of Ba{0.60}K{0.40}Mn2As2 in which itinerant ferromagnetism (FM) below a Curie temperature TC = 100 K arising from the doped conduction holes coexists with collinear antiferromagnetism (AFM) of the Mn local moments that order below a Neel temperature TN = 480 K. The FM ordered moments are aligned in the tetragonal ab-plane and are orthogonal to the AFM-ordered Mn moments that are aligned along the c-axis. The magnitude an…
In the weak regime, we suggest a model where superconductivity types I and II bind assuming an adiabatic hypothesis where the frequency of oscillation of free electrons is much smaller than of polarons coupled to phonons, and an itinerant antiferromagnetism appears. At the end of the article we derive an state's equation which is tested according to generic experimental data.
We report results of 23Na and 75As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments on a self-flux grown high-quality single crystal of stoichiometric NaFeAs. The NMR spectra revealed a tetragonal to twinned-orthorhombic structural phase transition at T_O = 57 K and an antiferromagnetic (AF) transition at T_AF = 45 K. The divergent behavior of nuclear relaxation rate near T_AF shows significant anisotropy, indicating that the critical slowing down of stripe-type AF fluctuations are strongly anisotropic in spin space. The NMR spectra at low enough temperatures consist of sharp peaks showing a comme…
In the generic phase diagram of heavy fermion systems, tuning an external parameter such as hydrostatic or chemical pressure modifies the superconducting transition temperature. The superconducting phase forms a dome in the temperature-tuning parameter phase diagram, which is associated with a maximum of the superconducting pairing interaction. Proximity to antiferromagnetism suggests a relation between the disappearance of antiferromagnetic order and superconductivity. We combine muon spin rotation, neutron scattering, and x-ray absorption spectroscopy techniques to gain access to the magneti…
By calculating orbitally resolved Pauli susceptibilities within maximally localized Wannier orbital basis transformed from first principles band structures, we find that magnetism in Fe$_{1+x}$Te still has its itinerant origin even without Fermi surface nesting, provided orbital modulation of particle-hole excitations are considered. This leads to strong magnetic instabilities at wave vector (0,$π$)/($π$,0) in d$_{xz}$/d$_{yz}$ orbitals that are responsible for the bicollinear antiferromagnetic state as extra electrons donated from excess Fe are considered. Magnetic exchange coupling between e…
To study how Andreev reflection (AR) is affected by itinerant antiferromagnetism, we perform $d$-wave AR spectroscopy with superconducting YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ on TiAu and on variously-oxidized Nb (NbO$_x$) samples. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is also used on the latter to measure their surface oxide composition. Below the Néel temperatures ($T_N$) of both TiAu and NbO$_x$, the conductance spectra show a dip-like structure instead of a zero-bias peak within the superconducting energy gap; for NbO$_x$, higher-oxidized samples show a stronger spectral dip at zero bias. These observations …
We report single crystal synthesis, specific heat and resistivity measurements and electronic structure calculations for BaCr$_2$As$_2$. This material is a metal with itinerant antiferromagnetism, similar to the parent phases of Fe-based high temperature superconductors, but differs in magnetic order. Comparison of bare band structure density of states and the low temperature specific heat implies a mass renormalization of $\sim$ 2. BaCr$_2$As$_2$ shows stronger transition metal - pnictogen covalency than the Fe compounds, and in this respect is more similar to BaMn$_2$As$_2$. This provides an…
Nuclear quadrupole resonance measurements have shown evidences that the heavy fermion compound CeRhIn$_5$ exhibits a coexistent phase with commensurate antiferromagnetism and d-wave superconductivity. In order to clarify the nature of the spin-excitations in the coexistent phase, we have applied the RPA method to an itinerant model, where the effective interaction is given by two mean-field terms of commensurate antiferromagnetism and d-wave superconductivity. It is shown that, around the transition line between the antiferromagnetic and the coexistent states, a low-energy incommensurate spin-…
We report the novel pressure($P$) - temperature($T$) phase diagram of antiferromagnetism and superconductivity in CeRhIn$_5$ and CeIn$_3$ revealed by the $^{115}$In nuclear-spin-lattice-relaxation ($T_1$) measurement. In the itinerant magnet CeRhIn$_5$, we found that the Néel temperature $T_N$ is reduced at $P \geq$ 1.23 GPa with an emergent pseudogap behavior. In CeIn$_3$, the localized magnetic character is robust against the application of pressure up to $P \sim$ 1.9 GPa, beyond which the system evolves into an itinerant regime in which the resistive superconducting phase emerges. We discus…
Identifying the nature of magnetism, itinerant or localized, remains a major challenge in condensed-matter science. Purely localized moments appear only in magnetic insulators, whereas itinerant moments more or less co-exist with localized moments in metallic compounds such as the doped-cuprate or the iron-based superconductors, hampering a thorough understanding of the role of magnetism in phenomena like superconductivity or magnetoresistance. Here we distinguish two antiferromagnetic modulations with respective propagation wave vectors of $Q_{\pm}$ = ($H \pm 0.557(1)$, 0, $L \pm 0.150(1)$) a…
The recent discovery of superconductivity in the iron-based layered pnictides with T_c ranging between 26 and 56K generated enormous interest in the physics of these materials. Here, we review some of the peculiarities of the antiferromagnetic order in the iron pnictides, including the selection of the stripe magnetic order and the formation of the Ising-nematic state in the unfolded BZ within an itinerant description. In addition we analyze the properties of the quasiparticle interference spectrum in the parent antiferromagnetic phase.
We report the novel pressure(P)-temperature(T) phase diagrams of antiferromagnetism (AF) and superconductivity (SC) in CeRhIn$_5$, CeIn$_3$ and CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ revealed by the NQR measurement. In the itinerant helical magnet CeRhIn$_5$, we found that the Néel temperature $T_N$ is reduced at $P \geq$ 1.23 GPa with an emergent pseudogap behavior. The coexistence of AF and SC is found in a narrow P range of 1.63 - 1.75 GPa, followed by the onset of SC with line-node gap over a wide P window 2.1 - 5 GPa. In CeIn$_3$, the localized magnetic character is robust against the application of pressure up …
We use $^{75}$As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to investigate the local electronic properties of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Ru$_{x}$)$_2$As$_2$ ($x =$ 0.23). We find two phase transitions, to antiferromagnetism at $T_N \approx$ 60 K and to superconductivity at $T_C \approx$ 15 K. Below $T_N$, our data show that the system is fully magnetic, with a commensurate antiferromagnetic structure and a moment of 0.4 $μ_B$/Fe. The spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/^{75}T_1$ is large in the magnetic state, indicating a high density of itinerant electrons induced by Ru doping. On cooling below $T_C$, $1/^{75}T_1$ on t…
We propose a microscopic state for the vortex phase of BSCO superconductors. Around the vortex core or above H_{c2}, the d wave hole pairs form a checkerboard localized in the commensurate antiferromagnetic background. We discuss this theory in connection with recent STM experiments.
We present the magnetic structure of the itinerant monoarsenide, FeAs, with the B31 structure. Powder neutron diffraction confirms incommensurate modulated magnetism with wavevector $\mathbf{q} = (0.395\pm0.001)\mathbf{c}^*$ at 4 K, but cannot distinguish between a simple spiral and a collinear spin-density wave structure. Polarized single crystal diffraction confirms that the structure is best described as a non-collinear spin-density wave arising from a combination of itinerant and localized behavior with spin amplitude along the b-axis direction being (15 $\pm$ 5)% larger than in the a-dire…
We show that a Fermi surface reconstruction due to spiral antiferromagnetic order may explain the rapid change in the Hall number as recently observed near optimal doping in cuprate superconductors [Badoux~\textit{et. al.}, Nature \textbf{531}, 210 (2016)]. The single-particle spectral function in the spiral state exhibits hole pockets which look like Fermi arcs due to a strong momentum dependence of the spectral weight. Adding charge-density wave order further reduces the Fermi surface to a single electron pocket. We propose quantum oscillation measurements to distinguish between commensurate…
Materials with exceptional magnetism and superconductivity usually conceive emergent physical phenomena. Here, we investigate the physical properties of the (Eu,La)FeAs2 system with double magnetic sublattices. The parent EuFeAs2 shows anisotropy-associated magnetic behaviors, such as Eu-related moment canting and exchange bias. Through La doping, the magnetic anisotropy is enhanced with ferromagnetism of Eu2+ realized in the overdoped region, and a special exchange bias of the superposed ferromagnetic/superconducting loop revealed in Eu0.8La0.2FeAs2. Meanwhile, the Fe-related antiferromagneti…
Antiferromagnetism is relevant to high temperature (high-Tc) superconductivity because copper oxide and iron arsenide high-Tc superconductors arise from electron- or hole-doping of their antiferromagnetic (AF) ordered parent compounds. There are two broad classes of explanation for the phenomenon of antiferromagnetism: in the local moment picture, appropriate for the insulating copper oxides, AF interactions are well described by a Heisenberg Hamiltonian; while in the itinerant model, suitable for metallic chromium, AF order arises from quasiparticle excitations of a nested Fermi surface. Ther…
We report on a novel pressure ($P$)-induced evolution of magnetism and superconductivity (SC) in a helical magnet CeRhIn$_5$ with an incommensurate wave vector $Q_i=({1/2},{1/2},0.297)$ through the $^{115}$In nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements under $P$. Systematic measurements of the $^{115}$In-NQR spectrum reveal that the commensurate antiferromagnetism (AFM) with $Q_c=({1/2},{1/2},{1/2})$ is realized above $P_m \sim$ 1.7 GPa. An important finding is that the size of SC gap and $T_c$ increase as the magnitude of the AFM moment decreases in the $P$ region, where SC uniformly coex…
The heavy fermion Ce(Rh,Ir)In5 system exhibits properties that range from an incommensurate antiferromagnet on the Rh-rich end to an exotic superconductor on the Ir-rich end of the phase diagram. At intermediate composition where antiferromagnetism coexists with superconductivity, two types of magnetic order are observed: the incommensurate one of CeRhIn5 and a new, commensurate antiferromagnetism that orders separately. The coexistence of f-electron superconductivity with two distinct f-electron magnetic orders is unique among unconventional superconductors, adding a new variety to the usual …
An attractive proposal for the hidden order (HO) in the heavy electron compound URu2Si2 is an itinerant multipole order of high rank. It is due to the pairing of electrons and holes centered on zone center and boundary, respectively in states that have maximally different total angular momentum components. Due to the pairing with commensurate zone boundary ordering vector the translational symmetry is broken and a HO quasiparticle gap opens below the transition temperature T_HO. Inelastic neutron scattering (INS) has demonstrated that for T<T_HO the collective magnetic response is dominated by…
Here, we report that K-doped BaMn2Bi2 shows no experimental evidence of superconductivity down to 1.5 K under pressures up to 35.6 GPa, however, a tetragonal to an orthorhombic phase transition is observed at pressure of 20 GPa. Theoretical calculations for the tetragonal and orthorhombic phases, on basis of our high-pressure XRD data, find that the AFM order is robust in both of the phases in pressurized Ba0.61K0.39Mn2Bi2. Our experimental and theoretical results suggest that the K-doped BaMn2Bi2 belongs to a strong Hunds AFM metal with a hybridization of localized spin electrons and itineran…
Employing the four-band tight-binding model we study theoretically the doping dependence of the spin response in the normal state of novel Fe-based pnictide superconductors. We show that the commensurate spin density wave (SDW) transition that arises due to interband scattering between the hole $α$-pockets and the electron $β$-pockets disappears already at the doping concentration $x \approx 0.04$ reflecting the evolution of the Fermi surfaces. Correspondingly, with further increase of the doping the antiferromagnetic fluctuations are suppressed for $x > 0.1$ and the Im$χ({\bf Q_{AFM}},ω)$ bec…
Neutron diffraction studies of Ba(Fe[1-x]Co[x])2As2 reveal that commensurate antiferromagnetic order gives way to incommensurate magnetic order for Co compositions between 0.056 < x < 0.06. The incommensurability has the form of a small transverse splitting (0, +-e, 0) from the nominal commensurate antiferromagnetic propagation vector Q[AFM] = (1, 0, 1) (in orthorhombic notation) where e = 0.02-0.03 and is composition dependent. The results are consistent with the formation of a spin-density wave driven by Fermi surface nesting of electron and hole pockets and confirm the itinerant nature of m…
In this paper we have studied the effect of external magnetic field in the co-existing phase of superconducting and anti-ferromagnetism of rare earth nickel borocarbides. The anti-ferromagnetism in these systems might have originated due to both localized 'f' electrons as well as itinerant electrons which are responsible for conduction. On the other hand, superconductivity is due to spin density wave, arising out of Fermi surface instability. The anti-ferromagnetism order is mostly influenced by hybridization of the 'f' electron with the conduction electron. Here we have obtained the dependenc…
Unconventional superconductivity (SC) is said to occur when Cooper pair formation is dominated by repulsive electron-electron interactions, so that the symmetry of the pair wavefunction is other than isotropic s-wave. The strong, on-site, repulsive electron-electron interactions that are the proximate cause of such superconductivity are more typically drivers of commensurate magnetism. Indeed, it is the suppression of commensurate antiferromagnetism (AF) that usually allows this type of unconventional superconductivity to emerge. Importantly, however, intervening between these AF and SC phases…
The magnetic excitations of the iron pnictides are explained within a degenerate double-exchange model. The local-moment spins are coupled by superexchanges $J_1$ and $J_2$ between nearest and next-nearest neighbors, respectively, and interact with the itinerant electrons of the degenerate $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ orbitals via a ferromagnetic Hund exchange. The latter stabilizes $(π,0)$ stripe antiferromagnetism due to emergent ferro-orbital order and the resulting kinetic energy gain by hopping preferably along the ferromagnetic spin direction. Taking the quantum nature of the spins into account…
We examine the relevance of several major material-dependent parameters to the magnetic softness in iron-base superconductors by first-principles electronic structure analysis of their parent compounds. The results are explained in the spin-fermion model where localized spins and orbitally degenerate itinerant electrons coexist and are coupled by Hund's rule coupling. We found that the difference in the strength of the Hund's rule coupling term is the major material-dependent microscopic parameter for determining the ground-state spin pattern. The magnetic softness in iron-based superconductor…
We show here that orbital degrees of freedom produce a distinct signature in the magnetic excitation spectrum of iron-based superconductors above the magnetic ordering temperature. Because $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ orbitals are strongly connected with the Fermi surface topology, the nature of magnetic excitations can be modified significantly due to the presence of either static or fluctuating orbital correlations. Within a five-orbital itinerant model, we show that static orbital order generally leads to an enhancement of commensurate magnetic excitations even when the original Fermi surface lack…
We report a muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) study of the cuprate-analog nickelate La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$, which undergoes a transition at 105 K to a low-temperature phase with charge-stripe and antiferromagnetic (AFM) order on square planar NiO$_2$ layers. Zero-field $μ$SR shows that this transition is abrupt and that the AFM configuration is commensurate. Comparison of observed muon precession frequencies with Ni dipolar field calculations yields Ni moments $\lesssim 0.5μ_B$. Dynamic muon spin relaxation above 105 K suggests critical slowing of Ni spin fluctuations, but is inconsistent with correspondi…
An intriguingly complex phase diagram of Na-doped SrFe2As2 is uncovered using high-resolution thermal-expansion, magnetization and heat-capacity measurements. The detailed temperature dependence of the orthorhombic distortion and the anisotropy of the uniform magnetic susceptibility provide evidence for nine distinct electronic phases near the transition region between stripe antiferromagnetism and unconventional superconductivity. In particular, we report the finding of a new magnetic phase which competes surprisingly strongly with superconductivity. From theoretical studies we propose that t…
We examine the competition of the observed stripe spin density wave (SDW) with other commensurate and incommensurate SDW phases in a two-band model of the pnictides. Starting from this microscopic model, we rigorously derive an expansion of the free energy in terms of the different order parameters at the mean-field level. We show that three distinct commensurate SDW states are possible and study their appearance as a function of the doping and the electronic structure. We show that the stripe phase is generally present, but its extent in the phase diagram depends strongly upon the number of h…
We investigate the properties of the coexistence phase of itinerant antiferromagnetism and nodal $d$-wave superconductivity (Q-phase) discovered in heavy fermion CeCoIn5 under applied magnetic field. We solve the minimal model that includes $d$-wave superconductivity and underlying magnetic correlations in real space to elucidate the structure of the $Q$-phase in the presence of an externally applied magnetic field. We further focus on the role of magnetic impurities, and show that they nucleate the Q-phase at lower magnetic fields. Our most crucial finding is that, even at zero applied field,…
We study the collective magnetic excitations of the recently discovered $C_{4}$ symmetric spin-density wave states of iron-based superconductors with particular emphasis on their orbital character based on an itinerant multiorbital approach. This is important since the $C_{4}$ symmetric spin-density wave states exist only at moderate interaction strengths where damping effects from a coupling to the continuum of particle-hole excitations strongly modifies the shape of the excitation spectra compared to predictions based on a local moment picture. We uncover a distinct orbital polarization inhe…
Recent neutron scattering experiments have revealed that the generic form of the magnetic excitations in the high-Tc cuprates of wide range of doping has the so-called "hourglass" shape; it features both upward and downward excitations at the incommensurate (IC) momenta spanning from the resonance peak at the commensurate momentum $(π,π)$. We propose the two-component spin-fermion model as a minimal phenomenological model which has both local spins and itinerant fermions as independent degrees of freedom. Our calculations of the dynamic spin correlation function provide good agreement with exp…
We elucidate the pivotal role of the bandstructure's orbital content in deciding the type of commensurate magnetic order stabilized within the itinerant scenario of iron-pnictides. Recent experimental findings in the tetragonal magnetic phase attest to the existence of the so-called charge and spin ordered density wave over the spin-vortex crystal phase, the latter of which tends to be favored in simplified band models of itinerant magnetism. Here we show that employing a multiorbital itinerant Landau approach based on realistic bandstructures can account for the experimentally observed magnet…
Recently, rutile RuO$_2$ has raised interest for its itinerant antiferromagnetism, crystal Hall effect, and strain-induced superconductivity. Understanding and manipulating these properties demands resolving the electronic structure and the relative roles of the rutile crystal field and $4d$ spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Here, we use O-K and Ru $M_3$ x-ray absorption (XAS) and Ru $M_3$ resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) to disentangle the contributions of crystal field, SOC, and electronic correlations in RuO$_2$. The locally orthorhombic site symmetry of the Ru ions introduces significan…
We study thermal and electrical transport in metals and superconductors near a quantum phase transition where antiferromagnetic order disappears. The same theory can also be applied to quantum phase transitions involving the loss of certain classes of intrinsic topological order. For a clean superconductor, we recover and extend the well-known universal results. The heat conductivity for commensurate and incommensurate antiferromagnetism coexisting with superconductivity shows a markedly different doping dependence near the quantum critical point, thus allowing to distinguish the states. In th…
In this paper we introduce an exactly solvable Kondo lattice model without any fine-tuning local gauge symmetry. This model describes itinerant electrons interplaying with a localized magnetic moment via only longitudinal Kondo exchange. Its solvability results from conservation of the localized moment at each site, and is valid for arbitrary lattice geometry and electron filling. A case study on square lattice shows that the ground state is a Néel antiferromagnetic insulator at half-filling. At finite temperature, paramagnetic phases including a Mott insulator and correlated metal are found. …
We use inelastic neutron scattering (INS) spectroscopy to study the magnetic excitations spectra throughout the Brioullion zone in electron-doped iron pnictide superconductors BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_{x}$As$_{2}$ with $x=0.096,0.15,0.18$. While the $x=0.096$ sample is near optimal superconductivity with $T_c=20$ K and has coexisting static incommensurate magnetic order, the $x=0.15,0.18$ samples are electron-overdoped with reduced $T_c$ of 14 K and 8 K, respectively, and have no static antiferromagnetic (AF) order. In previous INS work on undoped ($x=0$) and electron optimally doped ($x=0.1$) samples,…
We report an investigation into the superconducting and magnetic properties of Fe_{1+y}Se_{x}Te_{1-x} single crystals by magnetic susceptibility, muon spin rotation, and neutron diffraction. We find three regimes of behavior in the phase diagram for 0\leq x\leq 0.5: (i) commensurate magnetic order for x< 0.1, (ii) bulk superconductivity for $x\lesssim 0.1$, and (iii) a range \sim 0.25\leq x\leq 0.45 in which superconductivity coexists with static incommensurate magnetic order. The results are qualitatively consistent with a two-band mean-field model in which itinerant magnetism and extended s-…
High-temperature superconductivity in iron pnictides occurs when electrons are doped into their antiferromagnetic (AF) parent compounds. In addition to inducing superconductivity, electron-doping also changes the static commensurate AF order in the undoped parent compounds into short-range incommensurate AF order near optimal superconductivity. Here we use neutron scattering to demonstrate that the incommensurate AF order in BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_{x}$As$_{2}$ is not a spin-density-wave arising from the itinerant electrons in nested Fermi surfaces, but consistent with a cluster spin glass in the matr…
The simultaneous presence of a Fe-related spin-density wave and antiferromagnetic order of Eu$^{2+}$ moments ranks EuFe$_2$As$_2$ among the most interesting parent compounds of iron-based pnictide superconductors. Here we explore the consequences of the dilution of Eu$^{2+}$ magnetic lattice through on-site Ca substitution. By employing macro- and microscopic techniques, including electrical transport and magnetometry, as well as muon-spin spectroscopy, we study the evolution of Eu magnetic order in both the weak and strong dilution regimes, achieved for Ca concentration $x(\mathrm{Ca}) = 0.12…
To elucidate the spin dynamics of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$, which couples with the charge degree of freedom, the spin excitations spanning the characteristic energy ($E_{\rm cross}$ $\sim$35-40 meV) are investigated for underdoped $x$ = 0.10 and optimally doped (OP) $x$ = 0.16 through inelastic neutron scattering measurements. Analysis based on a two-component picture of high-quality data clarified the possible coexistence of uprightly standing incommensurate (IC) excitations with gapless commensurate (C) excitations in the energy-momentum space. The IC component weakens the intensity toward $E…
