It was reported by Shiino et al in J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 86, 123705 (2017) that Ce_xLa_{1-x} Cu_{5.62} Au_{0.38} (x=0.02-0.10) exhibits a new type of quantum criticality in both magnetic and thermal properties, which is the same as that observed in a series of materials exhibiting quantum critical valence fluctuations (QCVF), such as β-YbAlB_4, Yb_{15}Al_{34}Au_{51}, and so on. However, the temperature (T) dependence in the resistivity rho(T) for T<0.5K is quite anomalous, i.e., ρ(T)\propto (const.-T^{n}) with n \simeq 0.75 at x=0.05. We find that this anomalous exponent is given by n=2(1-ζ), with zeta being the weakly temperature dependent (0.5 \lsim ζ\lsim 0.7) critical exponent for the QCVF.The observed critical exponent n\simeq 0.75 at x=0.05 is reproduced by choosing ζ\simeq 0.63 which is consistent with the divergent behavior observed in the uniform magnetic susceptibility χ\propto T^{-ζ} with ζ\simeq 0.67 at x=0.02.
The interpretation of the magnetic phase diagrams of strongly correlated electron systems remains controversial. In particular, the physics of quantum phase transitions, which occur at zero temperature, is still enigmatic. Heavy-fermion compounds aretextbook examples of quantum criticality, as doping, or the application of pressure or a magnetic field can lead to a quantum phase transition between a magnetically ordered state and a paramagnetic regime. A central question concerns the microscopic nature of the critical quantum fluctuations. Are they antiferromagnetic or of local origin? Here we…
Localized magnetic moments have been predicted to develop in graphene samples with vacancies or adsorbates. The interplay between such magnetic impurities and graphene's Dirac quasiparticles leads to remarkable many-body phenomena, which have so far proved elusive to experimental efforts. In this article, we study the thermodynamic, spectral and transport signatures of quantum criticality and Kondo physics of a dilute ensemble of atomic impurities in graphene. We consider vacancies and adatoms that either break or preserve graphene's $C_{3v}$ and inversion symmetries. In a neutral graphene sam…
We investigate quantum impurity problems, where a local magnetic moment is coupled to the spin density of a bosonic environment, leading to bosonic versions of the standard Kondo and Anderson impurity models. In a physical situation, these bosonic environments can correspond either to deconfined spinons in certain classes of Z_2 frustrated antiferromagnets, or to particles in a multicomponent Bose gase (in which case the spin degree of freedom is attributed to hyperfine levels). Using renormalization group techniques, we establish that our impurity models, which feature an exchange interaction…
Specific heat for single crystalline samples of Ce1-xLaxOs4Sb12 at zero-field and magnetic fields to 14 T is reported. Our results confirm enhanced value of the electronic specific heat coefficient in the paramagnetic state. They provide arguments for the intrinsic origin of the 1.1 K anomaly. This transition leads to opening of the gap at the Fermi surface. This low temperature state of CeOs4Sb12 is extremely sensitive to chemical impurities. 2% of La substituted for Ce suppresses the transition and reduces the electronic specific heat coefficient. The magnetic field response of the specific …
We show that the RKKY interaction in the two-impurity Anderson model comprise two contributions: a ferromagnetic part stemming from the symmetrized hybridization functions and an anti-ferromagnetic part. We demonstrate that this anti-ferromagnetic contribution can also be generated by an effective local tunneling term between the two impurities. This tunneling can be analytically calculated for particle-hole symmetric impurities. Replacing the full hybridization functions by the symmetric part and this tunneling term leads to the identical low-temperature fixed point spectrum in the numerical …
Experimental bulk susceptibility X(T) and magnetization M(H,T) of the S=1-Haldane chain system doped with nonmagnetic impurities, Y2BaNi1-xZnxO5 (x=0.04,0.06,0.08), are analyzed. A numerical calculation for the low-energy spectrum of non-interacting open segments describes very well experimental data above 4 K. Below 4 K, we observe power-law behaviors, X(T)=T^-alpha and M(H,T)/T^(1-alpha)=f(alpha,(H/T)), with alpha (<1) depending on the doping concentration x.This observation suggests the appearance of a gapless quantum phase due to a broad distribution of effective couplings between the dilu…
We present a phenomenological solution of the Kondo lattice that is derived from an analysis of the bulk specific heat and spin susceptibility of the heavy electron superconductor CeCoIn5. We find that below a crossover temperature corresponding to the intersite coupling scale, T* ~ 45 K, the Kondo gas (of non-interacting Kondo impurities) partially condenses into a heavy electron "Kondo" liquid that has a temperature independent Wilson ratio = 2.0. The relative fraction, f, of the "condensed" Kondo liquid component plays the role of an order parameter; it increases linearly with decreasing te…
Constructing an effective field theory in terms of doped magnetic impurities (described by an O(3) vector model with a random mass term), itinerant electrons of spin-orbit coupled semiconductors (given by a Dirac theory with a relatively large mass term), and effective interactions between doped magnetic ions and itinerant electrons (assumed by an effective Zeeman coupling term), we perform the perturbative renormalization group analysis in the one-loop level based on the dimensional regularization technique. As a result, we find that the mass renormalization in dynamics of itinerant electrons…
Analytical and continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo methods are used to investigate the possibility of occupation switching and quantum criticality in a model of two quantum impurities coupled to two leads. A general discussion of potential occupancy-switching related quantum critical points is given, and a detailed analysis is made of a specific model which has been recently discussed. For spinless electrons, no phase transition is found. For electrons with spin, a critical value of the interaction strength separates a weak coupling regime in which all properties vary smoothly with parameters …
In symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases, the combination of symmetries and a bulk gap stabilizes protected modes at surfaces or at topological defects. Understanding the fate of these modes at a quantum critical point, when the protecting symmetries are on the verge of being broken, is an outstanding problem. This interplay of topology and criticality must incorporate both the bulk dynamics of critical points, often described by nontrivial conformal field theories, and SPT physics. Here, we study the simplest nontrivial setting - that of a 0+1 dimensional topological mode - a quantum sp…
Superconductivity mediated by spin fluctuations in weak and nearly ferromagnetic metals is studied close to the zero-temperature magnetic transition. We solve analytically the Eliashberg equations for p-wave pairing and obtain the normal state quasiparticle self-energy and the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ as a function of the distance to the quantum critical point. We show that the reduction of quasiparticle coherence and life-time due to scattering by quasistatic spin fluctuations is the dominant pair-breaking process, which leads to a rapid suppression of $T_c$ to a nonzero v…
Magnetic impurities in neutral graphene provide a realization of the pseudogap Kondo model, which displays a quantum phase transition between phases with screened and unscreened impurity moment. Here, we present a detailed study of the pseudogap Kondo model with finite chemical potential mu. While carrier doping restores conventional Kondo screening at lowest energies, properties of the quantum critical fixed point turn out to influence the behavior over a large parameter range. Most importantly, the Kondo temperature T_K shows an extreme asymmetry between electron and hole doping. At critical…
A quantum phase transition may occur in the ground state of a system at zero temperature when a controlling field or interaction is varied. The resulting quantum fluctuations which trigger the transition produce scaling behavior of various observables, governed by universal critical exponents. A particularly interesting class of such transitions appear in systems with quantum impurities where a non-extensive term in the free energy becomes singular at the critical point. Curiously, the notion of a conventional order parameter which exhibits scaling at the critical point is generically missing …
We study the stability of three-dimensional incompressible Weyl semimetals in the presence of random quenched charge impurities. Combining numerical analysis and scaling theory we show that in the presence of sufficiently weak randomness (i) Weyl semimetal remains stable, while (ii) double-Weyl semimetal gives rise to compressible diffusive metal where the mean density of states at zero energy is finite. At stronger disorder, Weyl semimetal undergoes a quantum phase transition and enter into a metallic phase. Mean density of states at zero energy serves as the order parameter and displays sing…
The pseudogap Kondo problem, describing quantum impurities coupled to fermionic quasiparticles with a pseudogap density of states, rho(omega) ~ |omega|^r, shows a rich zero-temperature phase diagram, with different screened and free moment phases and associated transitions. We analyze both the particle-hole symmetric and asymmetric cases using renormalization group techniques. In the vicinity of r=0, which plays the role of a lower-critical dimension, an expansion in the Kondo coupling is appropriate. In contrast, r=1 is the upper-critical dimension in the absence of particle-hole symmetry, an…
At any quantum critical point (QCP) with a critical magnetic field $H_c$, the magnetic Grüneisen parameter $Γ_{\rm H}$, which equals the adiabatic magnetocaloric effect, is predicted to show characteristic signatures such as a divergence, sign change and $T/(H-H_c)^ε$ scaling. We categorize thirteen materials, ranging from heavy fermion metals to frustrated magnets, where such experimental signatures have been found. Remarkably, seven stoichiometric materials at ambient pressure show $H_c=0$. However, additional thermodynamic and magnetic experiments suggest that most of them do not show a zer…
Disorder such as impurities and dislocations in Weyl semimetals (SMs) drives a quantum critical point (QCP) where the density of states at the Weyl point gains a non-zero value. Near the QCP, the asymptotic low energy singularities of physical quantities are controlled by the critical exponents $ν$ and $z$. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate, which originates from the hyperfine coupling between a nuclear spin and long-range orbital currents in Weyl fermion systems, shows intriguing critical behavior. Based on the self-consistent Born approximation for impurities, we study the nuclear spi…
Magnetic impurities coupled to both fermionic and bosonic baths or to a fermionic bath with pseudogap density of states, described by the Fermi-Bose Kondo and pseudogap Kondo models, display non-trivial intermediate coupling fixed points associated with critical local-moment fluctuations and local non-Fermi liquid behavior. Based on renormalization group together with a renormalized perturbation expansion around the free-impurity limit, we calculate various impurity properties in the vicinity of those intermediate-coupling fixed points. In particular, we compute the conduction electron T matri…
It is shown that the quasi-universal ratio $q=\lim_{T\to0}eS/C\sim\pm1$ of the Seebeck coefficient to the specific heat in the limit of T=0 observed in a series of strongly correlated metals can be understood on the basis of the Fermi liquid theory description. In deriving this result, it is crucial that a relevant scattering arises from impurities, but not from the mutual scattering of quasiparticles. The systematics of the sign of $q$ is shown to reflect the sign of the logarithmic derivative of the density of states and the inverse mass tensor of the quasiparticles, explaining the systemati…
We investigate the effect of quenched bond disorder on the two-dimensional three-color Ashkin-Teller model, which undergoes a first-order phase transition in the absence of impurities. This is one of the simplest and striking models in which quantitative numerical simulations can be carried out to investigate emergent criticality due to disorder rounding of first-order transition. Utilizing extensive cluster Monte Carlo simulations on large lattice sizes of up to $128 \times 128$ spins, each of which is represented by three colors taking values $\pm 1$, we show that the rounding of the first-o…
We study the non-local superconducting pairing of two interacting Anderson impurities, which has an instability near the quantum critical point from the competition between the Kondo effect and an antiferromagnetic inter-impurity spin exchange interaction. As revealed by the dynamics over the whole energy range, the superconducting pairing fluctuations acquire considerable strength from an energy scale much higher than the characteristic spin fluctuation scale while the low energy behaviors follow those of the staggered spin susceptibility. We argue that the glue to the superconducting pairing…
The specific heat $C$ of the cuprate superconductors La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ and Bi$_{2+y}$Sr$_{2-x-y}$La$_x$CuO$_{6+δ}$ was measured at low temperature (down to $0.5~{\rm K}$), for dopings $p$ close to $p^\star$, the critical doping for the onset of the pseudogap phase. A magnetic field up to $35~{\rm T}$ was applied to suppress superconductivity, giving direct access to the normal state at low temperature, and enabling a determination of $C_e$, the electronic contribution to the normal-state specific heat, at $T \to 0$. In La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ at $x=p = 0.22$, $0.24$ and $0.25$, $C_e / T …
