This work reports on the temperature dependence of the electron spin resonance (ESR) of Gd$^{3+}$-doped SmB$_{6}$ single crystals at X- and Q-band microwave frequencies in different crystallographic directions. We found an anomalous inhomogeneous broadening of the Gd$^{3+}$ ESR linewidth ($ΔH$) within 5.3 K $\leq T \leq$ 12.0 K which is attributed to slow crystalline electric field (CEF) fluctuations, slower than the timescale of the ESR microwave frequencies used ($\sim$10 GHz). This linewidth inhomogeneity may be associated to the coupling of the Gd$^{3+}$ $S$-states to the breathing mode of the SmB$_{6}$ cage, and can be simulated by a random distribution of the 4$^{th}$ CEF parameter, $b_4$, that strikingly takes negative and positive values. The temperature at which this inhomogeneity sets in, is related to the onset of a continuous insulator-to-metal phase transition. In addition, based on the interconfigurational fluctuation relaxation model, the observed exponential $T$-dependence of $ΔH$ above $T\simeq$ 10 K gives rise to an excitation energy notably close to the hybridization gap of SmB$_{6}$ ($Δ\simeq$ 60 K). This charge fluctuation scenario provides important ingredients to the physical properties of SmB$_{6}$. We finally discuss the interplay between charge and valence fluctuations under the view of slow CEF fluctuations in SmB$_{6}$ by coupling the Gd$^{3+}$ ions to the breathing phonon mode via a dynamic Jahn-Teller-like mechanism.
As an exemplary Kondo insulator, SmB6 has been studied for several decades; however, direct evidence for the development of the Kondo coherent state and the evolution of the electronic structure in the material has not been obtained due to the rather complicated electronic and thermal transport behavior. Recently, these open questions attracted increasing attention as the emergence of a time-reversal invariant topological surface state in the Kondo insulator has been suggested. Here, we use point-contact spectroscopy to reveal the temperature dependence of the electronic states in SmB6. We dem…
SmB6 is a promising candidate for topological Kondo insulator. In this letter, we report ultrafast carrier dynamics of SmB6. Two characteristic temperatures: T1=100 K and T2= 20 K are observed. T1 corresponds to the opening of the f-d hybridization gap revealed by an abrupt disappearance of terahertz f-band plasmon oscillations. Between T1 and T2, a phonon bottleneck effect dominates the photocarrier relaxation processes. Below T2, we observe the formation of in-gap states, which are strongly affected by optically injected hot electrons and the transient electron temperature change.
Dependence of the spectral functions on temperature and rare-earth substitution was examined in detail for Kondo semiconductor alloys Sm1-xEuxB6 and Yb1-xLuxB12 by bulk-sensitive photoemission. It is found that the 4f lattice coherence and intrinsic (small) energy gap are robust for SmB6 against the Eu substitution up to x = 0.15 while both collapse by Lu substitution already at x = 0.125 for YbB12. Our results suggest that the mechanism of the intrinsic gap formation is different between SmB6 and YbB12 although they were so far categorized in the same kind of Kondo semiconductors.
Recently, the resistance saturation at low temperature in Kondo insulator SmB6, a long-standing puzzle in condensed matter physics, was proposed to originate from topological surface state. Here,we systematically studied the magnetoresistance of SmB6 at low temperature up to 55 Tesla. Both temperature- and angular-dependent magnetoresistances show a similar crossover behavior below 5 K. Furthermore, the angular-dependent magnetoresistance on different crystal face confirms a two-dimensional surface state as the origin of magnetoresistances crossover below 5K. Based on two-channels model consis…
Recent quantum oscillation experiments on SmB$_6$ pose a paradox, for while the angular dependence of the oscillation frequencies suggest a 3D bulk Fermi surface, SmB$_6$ remains robustly insulating to very high magnetic fields. Moreover, a sudden low temperature upturn in the amplitude of the oscillations raises the possibility of quantum criticality. Here we discuss recently proposed mechanisms for this effect, contrasting bulk and surface scenarios. We argue that topological surface states permit us to reconcile the various data with bulk transport and spectroscopy measurements, interpretin…
We use scanning tunneling microscopy to investigate the (001) surface of cleaved SmB6 Kondo insulator. Variable temperature dI/dV spectroscopy up to 60 K reveals a gap-like density of state suppression around the Fermi level, which is due to the hybridization between the itinerant Sm 5d band and localized Sm 4f band. At temperatures below 40 K, a sharp coherence peak emerges within the hybridization gap near the lower gap edge. We propose that the in-gap resonance state is due to a collective excitation in magnetic origin with the presence of spin-orbital coupling and mixed valence fluctuation…
Recent theoretical calculations and experimental results suggest that the strongly correlated material SmB$_{6}$ may be a realization of a topological Kondo insulator. We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study on SmB$_{6}$ in order to elucidate elements of the electronic structure relevant to the possible occurrence of a topological Kondo insulator state. The obtained electronic structure in the whole three-dimensional momentum space reveals one electron-like 5d bulk band centred at the X point of the bulk Brillouin zone that is hybridized with strongly correlated f …
Temperature dependence of the electronic structure of SmB6 is studied by high-resolution ARPES down to 1 K. We demonstrate that there is no essential difference for the dispersions of the surface states below and above the resistivity saturating anomaly (~ 3.5 K). Quantitative analyses of the surface states indicate that the quasi-particle scattering rate increases linearly as a function of temperature and binding energy, which differs from Fermi-Liquid behavior. Most intriguingly, we observe that the hybridization between the d and f states builds gradually over a wide temperature region (30 …
We study the transport properties of the Kondo insulator SmB$_6$ with a specialized configuration designed to distinguish bulk-dominated conduction from surface-dominated conduction. We find that as the material is cooled below 4 K, it exhibits a crossover from bulk to surface conduction with a fully insulating bulk. We take the robustness and magnitude of the surface conductivity, as is manifest in the literature of SmB$_6$, to be strong evidence for the topological insulator metallic surface states recently predicted for this material.
SmB6 is a strongly correlated mixed-valence Kondo insulator with a newly discovered surface state, proposed to be of non-trivial topological origin. However, the surface state dominates electrical conduction only below T* ~ 4 K limiting its scientific investigation and device application. Here, we report the enhancement of T * in SmB6 under the application of tensile strain. With 0.7% tensile strain we report surface dominated conduction at up to a temperature of 240 K, persisting even after the strain has been removed. This can be explained in the framework of strain-tuned temporal and spatia…
We prove theoretically that certain strongly correlated Kondo insulators are topological crystalline insulators with nontrivial topology protected by crystal symmetries. In particular, we find that SmB$_6$ is such a material. In addition to a nontrivial Z$_2$ topological index protected by time reversal symmetry, SmB$_6$ also has nontrival mirror Chern numbers protected by mirror symmetries. On the $(100)$ surface of SmB$_6$, the nontrivial mirror Chern numbers do not generate additional surface states beyond those predicted by the Z$_2$ topological index. However, on the $(110)$ surface, two …
We present a detailed investigation of the temperature and depth dependence of the magnetic properties of 3D topological Kondo insulator SmB6 , in particular near its surface. We find that local magnetic field fluctuations detected in the bulk are suppressed rapidly with decreasing depths, disappearing almost completely at the surface. We attribute the magnetic excitations to spin excitons in bulk SmB6 , which produce local magnetic fields of about ~1.8 mT fluctuating on a time scale of ~60 ns. We find that the excitonic fluctuations are suppressed when approaching the surface on a length scal…
We present the results of a systematic investigation of the magnetic properties of the three-dimensional Kondo topological insulator SmB6 using magnetization and muon-spin relaxation/rotation (muSR) measurements. The muSR measurements exhibit magnetic field fluctuations in SmB6 below 15 K due to electronic moments present in the system. However, no evidence for magnetic ordering is found down to 19 mK. The observed magnetism in SmB6 is homogeneous in nature throughout the full volume of the sample. Bulk magnetization measurements on the same sample show consistent behavior. The agreement betwe…
Compounds within the hexaboride class of materials exhibit a wide variety of interesting physical phenomena, including polaron formation and quadrupolar order. In particular, SmB$_6$ has recently drawn attention as it is considered a prototypical topological Kondo insulator. Evidence in favor of this concept, however, has proven experimentally difficult and controversial, partly because of the required temperatures and energy resolution. Here, a powerful tool is Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) with its unique ability to give local, microscopic information that directly relates to the one-p…
Kondo insulating materials lie outside the usual dichotomy of weakly versus correlated - band versus Mott - insulators. They are metallic at high temperatures but resemble band insulators at low temperatures because of the opening of an interaction induced band gap. The first discovered Kondo insulator (KI) SmB$_6$ has been predicted to form a topological KI (TKI) which mimics a topological insulator at low temperatures. However, since its discovery thermodynamic and transport anomalies have been observed that have defied a theoretical explanation. Enigmatic signatures of collective modes insi…
Realization of semimetals with non-trivial topologies such as Dirac and Weyl semimetals, have provided a boost in the study of these quantum materials. Presence of electron correlation makes the system even more exotic due to enhanced scattering of charge carriers, Kondo screening etc. Here, we studied the electronic properties of single crystalline, SmBi employing varied state of the art bulk measurements. Magnetization data reveals two magnetic transitions; an antiferromagnetic order with a Neel temperature of ~ 9 K and a second magnetic transition at a lower temperature (= 7 K). The electri…
A necessary element for the predicted topological state in Kondo insulator SmB$_6$ is the hybridization gap which opens in this compound at low temperatures. In this work, we present a comparative study of the in-gap density of states due to Sm vacancies by Raman scattering spectroscopy and heat capacity for samples where the number of Sm vacancies is equal to or below 1 %. We demonstrate that hybridization gap is very sensitive to the presence of Sm vacancies. At the amount of vacancies above 1 % the gap fills in with impurity states and low temperature heat capacity is enhanced.
We used the inverted resistance method to extend the bulk resistivity of SmB$_{6}$ to a regime where the surface conduction overwhelms the bulk. Remarkably, the bulk resistivity shows an intrinsic thermally activated behavior that changes ten orders of magnitude, suggesting that it is an ideal insulator that is immune to disorder. Non-stoichiometrically-grown SmB$_{6}$ samples also show an almost identical thermally activated behavior. At low temperatures, however, these samples show a mysterious high bulk resistivity plateau, which may arise from extended defect conduction in a 3D TI.
The Kondo insulator SmB$_6$ has long been known to display anomalous transport behavior at low temperatures, T$<5$ K. In this temperatures range, a plateau is observed in the dc resistivity, contrary to the exponential divergence expected for a gapped system. Recent theoretical calculations suggest that SmB$_6$ may be the first topological Kondo insulator (TKI) and propose that the residual conductivity is due to topological surface states which reside within the Kondo gap. Since the TKI prediction many experiments have claimed to observe high mobility surface states within a perfectly insulat…
The compound SmB$_6$ is the best established realization of a topological Kondo insulator, in which a topological insulator state is obtained through Kondo coherence. Recent studies have found evidence that the surface of SmB$_6$ hosts ferromagnetic domains, creating an intrinsic platform for unidirectional ballistic transport at the domain boundaries. Here, surface-sensitive X-ray absorption (XAS) and bulk-sensitive resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra are measured at the Sm N$_{4,5}$-edge, and used to evaluate electronic symmetries, excitations and temperature dependence near t…
Motivated by the high sensitivity to Fermi surface topology and scattering mechanisms in magneto-thermoelectric transport, we have measured the thermopower and Nernst effect on the (011)-plane of the proposed topological Kondo insulator SmB$_6$. These experiments, together with electrical resistivity and Hall effect measurements, demonstrate that the (011)-plane also harbors a metallic surface with the effective mass in the order of 10-10$^2$ $m_0$. The surface and bulk conductances are well distinguished in these measurements and are categorized into metallic and non-degenerate semiconducting…
Since its discovery as a Kondo insulator 50 years ago, SmB6 recently received a revival of interest due to detection of unexpected quantum oscillations in the insulating state, discovery of disorder-immune bulk transport, and proposals of correlation-driven topological physics. While recent transport results attribute the anomalous low temperature conduction to two-dimensional surface states, important alternatives, such as conduction channel residing in one-dimensional dislocation lines, have not been adequately explored. Here we study SmB6 with scanning microwave impedance microscopy and unc…
We report the temperature-dependent three-dimensional angle-resolved photoemission spectra of the Kondo semiconductor SmB$_6$. We found a difference in the temperature dependence of the peaks at the X and $Γ$ points, due to hybridization between the Sm 5d conduction band and the nearly localized Sm 4f state. The peak intensity at the X point has the same temperature dependence as the valence transition below 120 K, while that at the $Γ$ point is consistent with the magnetic excitation at Q=(0.5,0.5,0.5) below 30 K. This suggests that the hybridization with the valence transition mainly occurs …
Samarium hexaboride (SmB$_6$), a well-known Kondo insulator in which the insulating bulk arises from strong electron correlations, has recently attracted great attention owing to increasing evidence for its topological nature, thereby harboring protected surface states. However, corroborative spectroscopic evidence is still lacking, unlike in the weakly correlated counterparts, including Bi$_2$Se$_3$. Here we report results from planar tunneling that unveil the detailed spectroscopic properties of SmB$_6$. The tunneling conductance obtained on the (001) and (011) single crystal surfaces reveal…
The compound SmB$_6$ is a Kondo Insulator, where the lowest-energy bulk electronic excitations are spin excitons. It also has surface states that are subjected to strong spin-orbit coupling. It has been suggested that SmB$_6$ is also a topological insulator. Here we show that, despite the absence of time-reversal symmetry breaking and the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling, the chiral spin texture of the Weyl cone is not completely protected. In particular, we show that the spin-exciton mediated scattering produces features in the surface electronic spectrum at energies separated from the …
Several technical issues and challenges are identified and investigated for the planar tunneling spectroscopy of the topological Kondo insulator SmB$_6$. Contrasting behaviors of the tunnel junctions prepared in two different ways are analyzed and explained in detail. The conventional approach based on an AlO$_\text{x}$ tunnel barrier results in unsatisfactory results due to the inter-diffusion between SmB$_6$ and deposited Al. On the contrary, plasma oxidation of SmB$_6$ crystals produces high-quality tunnel barriers on both (001) and (011) surfaces. Resultant conductance spectra are highly r…
The recent rekindling of interest in the mixed valent Kondo insulator SmB$_{6}$ as candidate for a first correlated topological insulator has resulted in a wealth of new experimental observations. In particular, angle-resolved photoemission experiments have provided completely new insights into the formation of the low temperature Kondo insulating state starting from the high temperature correlated metal. Here, we report detailed temperature and energy dependent measurements of the optical constants of SmB$_6$ in order to provide a detailed study from the point of view of a bulk sensitive spec…
Samarium hexaboride (SmB6) has recently been considered to be a topological Kondo insulator (TKI), the first strongly correlated electron system to exhibit topological surface conduction states. In this contribution, results of electrical resistivity measurements between 80 K and 0.08 K of various SmB6 single crystalline samples are presented, analyzed and discussed. The received results imply that the residual conductivity of SmB6 below about 4 K is of non-activated (metallic-like) nature. It is shown that this metallic-like behavior can be attributed both to surface (2D) conduction states, a…
We utilize terahertz time domain spectroscopy to investigate thin films of the heavy fermion compound SmB6, a prototype Kondo insulator. Temperature dependent terahertz (THz) conductivity measurements reveal a rapid decrease in the Drude weight and carrier scattering rate at ~T*=20 K, well below the hybridization gap onset temperature (100 K). Moreover, a low-temperature conductivity plateau (below 20K) indicates the emergence of a surface state with an effective electron mass of 0.1me. Conductivity dynamics following optical excitation are also measured and interpreted using Rothwarf-Taylor (…
The Kondo insulator SmB6 has long been known to exhibit low temperature (T < 10K) transport anomaly and has recently attracted attention as a new topological insulator candidate. By combining low-temperature and high energy-momentum resolution of the laser-based ARPES technique, for the first time, we probe the surface electronic structure of the anomalous conductivity regime. We observe that the bulk bands exhibit a Kondo gap of 14 meV and identify in-gap low-lying states within a 4 meV window of the Fermi level on the (001)-surface of this material. The low-lying states are found to form ele…
Kondo insulators (KIs) are strongly correlated materials in which the interactions between 4f and conduction electrons lead to a hybridization gap opening at low temperature 1-2. SmB6 is a typical KI, but its resistivity does not diverge at low temperatures, which was attributed to some in-gap states 3-10. However after several decades of research, the nature and origin of the in-gap states remain unclear. Recent band calculation and transport measurements suggest that the in-gap states could actually be ascribed to topological surface states. SmB6 thus might be the first realization of topolo…
The temperature and thickness dependencies of the in-plane anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) of SmB$_6$ thin films are reported. We find that the AMR changes sign from negative ($ρ_{||}<ρ_{\perp}$) at high temperatures to positive ($ρ_{||}>ρ_{\perp}$) at low temperatures. The temperature, T$_s$, at which this sign change occurs, decreases with increasing film thickness $t$ and T$_s$ vanishes for $t$ $>$ 30 nm. We interpret our results in the framework of a competition between two components: a negative bulk contribution and a positive surface AMR.
The predicted interplay between Kondo physics and non-trivial topology in SmB$_{6}$ has stimulated many experimental reports, some of which are in apparent contradiction. The origin of the dispute may lie on the fragility of the Kondo insulating phase in the presence of Sm vacancies (Kondo holes) and/or natural impurities, such as Gd$^{3+}$. In this work, we locally investigated this fragility for Al-flux grown Sm$_{1-x}$Gd$_{x}$B$_{6}$ single crystals (0 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 0.02) by combining electron spin resonance (ESR) and complementary bulk measurements. The Gd$^{3+}$ ESR spectra in a highl…
The true topological nature of the Kondo insulator SmB$_6$ remains to be unveiled. Our previous tunneling study not only found evidence for the existence of surface Dirac fermions, but it also uncovered that they inherently interact with the spin excitons, collective excitations in the bulk. We have extended such a spectroscopic investigation into crystals containing a Sm deficiency. The bulk hybridization gap is found to be insensitive to the deficiency up to 1% studied here, but the surface states in Sm-deficient crystals exhibit quite different temperature evolutions from those in stoichiom…
The thermal conductivity $κ$ of the Kondo insulator SmB$_6$ was measured at low temperature, down to 70 mK, in magnetic fields up to 15 T, on single crystals grown using both the floating-zone and the flux methods. The residual linear term $κ_0/T$ at $T \to 0$ is found to be zero in all samples, for all magnetic fields, in agreement with previous studies. There is therefore no clear evidence of fermionic heat carriers. In contrast to some prior data, we observe a large enhancement of $κ(T)$ with increasing field. The effect of field is anisotropic, depending on the relative orientation of fiel…
We report a systematic study of Sm valence in the prototypical intermediate valence compound SmB$_6$. Sm mean valence, $v_{\rm Sm}$, was measured by X-ray absorption spectroscopy as functions of pressure ($1<P<13$ GPa) and temperature ($3<T<300$ K). Pressure induced magnetic order (MO) was detected above $P_c = 10$ GPa by resistivity measurements. A shift toward localized $4f$ state with increasing $P$ and/or $T$ is evident from an increase in $v_{\rm Sm}$. However $v_{\rm Sm}$ at $P_c$ is anomalously far below 3, which differs from the general case of nonmagnetic-magnetic transition in Yb and…
The topology and spin-orbital polarization of two-dimensional (2D) surface electronic states have been extensively studied in this decade. One major interest in them is their close relationship with the parities of the bulk (3D) electronic states. In this context, the surface is often regarded as a simple truncation of the bulk crystal. Here we show breakdown of the bulk-related in-plane rotation symmetry in the topological surface states (TSSs) of the Kondo insulator SmB$_6$. Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) performed on the vicinal SmB$_6$(001)-$p$(2$\times$2) surface showed…
The proposed topological Kondo insulator SmB$_{6}$ hosts a bulk Kondo hybridization gap that stems from strong electronic correlations and a metallic surface state whose effective mass remains disputed. Thermopower and scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements argue for heavy surface states that also stem from strong correlations, whereas quantum oscillation and angle-resolved photoemission measurements reveal light effective masses that would be consistent with a Kondo breakdown scenario at the surface. Here we investigate the evolution of the surface state via electrical and thermoelectri…
Samarium hexaboride (SmB$_6$) is the first strongly correlated material with a recognized non-trivial band-structure topology. Its electron correlations are seen by inelastic neutron scattering as a coherent collective excitation at the energy of 14 meV. Here we calculate the spectrum of this mode using a perturbative slave boson method. Our starting point is the recently constructed Anderson model that properly captures the band-structure topology of SmB$_6$. Most self-consistent renormalization effects are captured by a few phenomenological parameters whose values are fitted to match the cal…
In Kondo insulator samarium hexaboride SmB$_6$, strong correlation and band hybridization lead to an insulating gap and a diverging resistance at low temperature. The resistance divergence ends at about 5 Kelvin, a behavior recently demonstrated to arise from the surface conductance. However, questions remain whether and where a topological surface state exists. Quantum oscillations have not been observed to map the Fermi surface. We solve the problem by resolving the Landau Level quantization and Fermi surface topology using torque magnetometry. The observed Fermi surface suggests a two dimen…
The search for a Fermi surface in the absence of a conventional Fermi liquid has thus far yielded very few potential candidates. Among promising materials are spin-frustrated Mott insulators near the insulator-metal transition, where theory predicts a Fermi surface associated with neutral low energy excitations. Here we reveal another route to experimentally realise a Fermi surface in the absence of a Fermi liquid by the experimental study of a Kondo insulator SmB$_6$ positioned close to the insulator-metal transition. We present experimental signatures down to low temperatures ($\ll 1$ K) ass…
Topological insulators are materials characterized by dissipationless, spin-polarized surface states resulting from non-trivial band topologies. Recent theoretical models and experiments suggest that SmB6 is the first topological Kondo insulator, in which the topologically non-trivial band structure results from electron-electron interactions via Kondo hybridization. Here, we report that the surface conductivity of SmB6 increases systematically with bulk carbon content. Further, addition of carbon is linked to an increase in n-type carriers, larger low temperature electronic contributions to t…
Recently, evidence for a conducting surface state below 19 K was reported for the correlated d-electron small gap semiconductor FeSi. In the work reported herein, the conducting surface state and the bulk phase of FeSi were probed via electrical resistivity measurements as a function of temperature T, magnetic field B to 60 T and pressure P to 7.6 GPa, and by means of a magnetic field modulated microwave spectroscopy (MFMMS) technique. The properties of FeSi were also compared to those of the Kondo insulator SmB6 to address the question of whether FeSi is a d-electron analogue of an f-electron…
SmB6 is a mixed valence Kondo insulator that exhibits a sharp increase in resistance following an activated behavior that levels off and saturates below 4K. This behavior can be explained by the proposal of SmB6 representing a new state of matter, a Topological Kondo insulator, in which a Kondo gap is developed and topologically protected surface conduction dominates low-temperature transport. Exploiting its non-linear dynamics, a tunable SmB6 oscillator device was recently demonstrated, where a small DC current generates large oscillating voltages at frequencies from a few Hz to hundreds of M…
Samarium hexaboride is a topological Kondo insulator, with metallic surface states manifesting from its insulating band structure. Since the insulating bulk itself is driven by strong correlations, both the bulk and surface host compelling magnetic and electronic phenomena. We employed X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at the Sm M$_{4,5}$ edges to measure surface and bulk magnetic properties of Sm$^{2+}$ and Sm$^{3+}$ within SmB$_6$. We observed anti-alignment to the applied field of the Sm$^{3+}$ magnetic dipole moment below $T = 75$ K and of the…
Strongly correlated Kondo insulator SmB6 is known for its peculiar low temperature residual conduction, which has recently been demonstrated to arise from a robust metallic surface state, as predicted by the theory of topological Kondo insulator (TKI). Photoemission, quantum oscillation and magnetic doping experiments have provided evidence for the Dirac-like dispersion and topological protection. Questions arise as whether signatures of spin-momentum locking and electron interaction could be resolved in transport measurements. Here we report metallic conduction of surface state down to mK tem…
The Kondo lattice antiferromagnet YbNiSi3 was investigated by neutron scattering. The magnetic structure of YbNiSi3 was determined by neutron diffraction on a single-crystalline sample. Inelastic scattering experiments were also performed on a pulverized sample to study the crystalline electric field (CEF) excitations. Two broad CEF excitations were observed, from which the CEF parameters were determined. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility chi and the magnetic specific heat Cmag were calculated using the determined CEF model, and compared with previous results.
The effective mass probed by the de Haas-van Alphen oscillations is studied for a model Ce system under magnetic field higher than the Kondo energy. In the mean-field theory, the mass enhancement per Ce ion in the periodic system is identical with that in the dilute system. With decreasing magnetic field, the effective mass tends to diverge corresponding to a formation of the Kondo ground state. The effective mass can be very different between up and down spins depending on the nature of the 4f wave functions.
Novel electronic order is found theoretically for a system where even number of localized electrons per site are coupled with conduction electrons. For precise quantitative study, a variant of the Kondo lattice model is taken with crystalline electric field (CEF) singlet and triplet states for each site. Using the dynamical mean-field theory combined with the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method, a staggered order with alternating Kondo and CEF singlets is identified for a case with one conduction electron per site being distributed in two conduction bands each of which is quarter-filled…
The physical mechanism driving the $γ$-$α$ phase transition of face-centre-cubic (fcc) cerium (Ce) remains controversial until now. In this work, high quality single crystalline fcc-Ce thin films were grown on Graphene/6$H$-SiC(0001) substrate, and explored by XRD and ARPES measurement. XRD spectra showed a clear $γ$-$α$ phase transition at $T_{γ-α}\approx$ 50 K, which is retarded by strain effect from substrate comparing with $T_{γ-α}$ (about 140 K) of the bulk Ce metal. However, APRES spectra did not show any signature of $α$-phase emerging in the surface-layer from 300 K to 17 K, which impl…
Our ultrasound results obtained in pulsed magnetic fields show that the filled-skutterudite compound SmOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ has the $Γ_{67}$ quartet crystalline-electric-field ground state. This fact suggests that the multipolar degrees of freedom of the $Γ_{67}$ quartet play an important role in the unusual physical properties of this material. On the other hand, the elastic response below $\approx$ 20 T cannot be explained using the localized 4$f$-electron model, which does not take into account the Kondo effect or ferromagnetic ordering. The analysis result suggests the presence of a Kondo-like …
The electronic structures of two mixed valence insulators YbB$_6$ and YbB$_12$ are studied by using the local density approximation (LDA) supplemented with the Gutzwiller method and dynamic mean field theory (DMFT). YbB$_6$ is found to be a moderately correlated Z$_2$ topological insulator, similar to SmB$_6$ but having much larger bulk band gap. Notably, YbB$_12$ is revealed to be in a new novel quantum state, strongly correlated topological crystalline Kondo insulator, which is characterized by its non-zero mirror Chern number. The surface calculations find odd (three) and even (four) number…
A Kondo lattice is often electrically insulating at low temperatures. However, several recent experiments have detected signatures of bulk metallicity within this Kondo insulating phase. Here we visualize the real-space charge landscape within a Kondo lattice with atomic resolution using a scanning tunneling microscope. We discover nanometer-scale puddles of metallic conduction electrons centered around uranium-site substitutions in the heavy-fermion compound URu$_2$Si$_2$, and around samarium-site defects in the topological Kondo insulator SmB$_6$. These defects disturb the Kondo screening cl…
The physical properties of single-crystalline SmBe$_{13}$ with a NaZn$_{13}$-type cubic structure have been studied by electrical resistivity ($ρ$), specific heat ($C$), and magnetization ($M$) measurements in magnetic fields of up to 9 T. The temperature ($T$) dependence of $ρ$ shows normal metallic behavior without showing the Kondo -ln$T$ behavior, suggesting the weak hybridization effect in this system. Analyses of the temperature dependence of $C$ suggest that the Sm ions of this compound are trivalent and that the crystalline-electric-field (CEF) ground state is a $Γ_8$ quartet with a fi…
In recent years, the study on the Kondo insulator SmB6, a strongly correlated electron material with decades-long puzzles, has become one of the most attractive topics again because the discovery of the coexistence of its unusual metallic surface state with an insulating bulk. Many efforts have been made in understanding the corresponding physics behind in SmB6, but some puzzles on it, being hotly debated and argued, has not been solved. In this article, based on the latest progress in our high pressure studies and the accumulating results reported by other groups on SmB6, we propose a notion …
A synergistic effect between strong electron correlation and spin-orbit interaction (SOI) has been theoretically predicted to result in a new topological state of quantum matter on Kondo insulators (KIs), so-called topological Kondo insulators (TKIs). One TKI candidate has been experimentally observed on the KI SmB6(001), and the origin of the surface states (SS) and the topological order of SmB6 has been actively discussed. Here, we show a metallic SS on the clean surface of another TKI candidate YbB12(001), using angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. The SS showed temperature-dependent …
The discovery of topologically non-trivial states in band insulators has induced an extensive search for topological phase in strongly correlated electron systems. In particular, samarium hexaboride (SmB$_6$) has drawn much attention as it might represent a new class of condensed matter called topological Kondo insulator. Kondo insulators (KI) can have non-trivial Z$_2$ topology because the energy gap opens at the Fermi energy ($E_F$) by hybridization between an odd- parity renormalized $f$ band and an even- parity conduction $d$ band. However, the characteristics of SmB$_6$ deviate from the c…
Topological insulators give rise to exquisite electronic properties due to their spin-momentum locked Dirac-cone-like band structure. Recently, it has been suggested that the required opposite parities between valence and conduction band along with strong spin-orbit coupling can be realized in correlated materials. Particularly, SmB$_6$ has been proposed as candidate material for a topological Kondo insulator. By utilizing scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy measurements down to 0.35 K, we observed several states within the hybridization gap of about $\pm$20 meV on well characterize…
