Realization of semimetals with non-trivial topologies such as Dirac and Weyl semimetals, have provided a boost in the study of these quantum materials. Presence of electron correlation makes the system even more exotic due to enhanced scattering of charge carriers, Kondo screening etc. Here, we studied the electronic properties of single crystalline, SmBi employing varied state of the art bulk measurements. Magnetization data reveals two magnetic transitions; an antiferromagnetic order with a Neel temperature of ~ 9 K and a second magnetic transition at a lower temperature (= 7 K). The electrical resistivity data shows an upturn typical of a Kondo system and the estimated Kondo temperature is found to be close to the Neel temperature. High quality of the crystal enabled us to discover signature of quantum oscillation in the magnetization data even at low magnetic field. Using a Landau level fan diagram analysis, a non-trivial Berry phase is identified for a Fermi pocket revealing the topological character in this material. These results demonstrate an unique example of the Fermiology in the antiferromagnetic state and opens up a new paradigm to explore the Dirac fermion physics in correlated topological metal via interplay of Kondo interaction, topological order and magnetism.
We report high quality single crystalline growth of SmBi using flux method. The compound crystallizes in the simple rock salt structure with space group Fm3m. The cubic structure of the single crystal was confirmed by Laue diffraction pattern. The magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal sharp antiferromagnetic order with Neel temperature of 9 K. The core level photoemission spectroscopy study of Sm 3d has been performed using monochromatic Al Kalpha source. We observe multiple features in the experimental spectra due to fonal state effect - a signature of hybridization between Sm 4f - Bi 6…
Motivated by the global phase diagram of antiferromagnetic heavy-fermion metals, we study the Kondo effect from the perspective of a nonlinear sigma model in the one dimensional Kondo-Heisenberg model. We focus on the effects of the instanton configurations of the sigma-model field and the associated Berry phase. Guided by the results derived using bosonization methods, we demonstrate that the Kondo singlet formation is accompanied by an emergent Berry phase. This Berry phase also captures the competition between the Kondo-singlet formation and spin Peierls correlations. Related effects are li…
The phase diagram of the Bose-Fermi Kondo model contains an SU(2)-invariant Kondo-screened phase separated by a continuous quantum phase transition from a Kondo-destroyed local moment phase. We analyze the effect of the Berry phase term of the spin path integral on the quantum critical properties of this quantum impurity model. For a range of the power-law exponent characterizing the spectral density of the dissipative bosonic bath, neglecting the influence of the Berry phase term makes the fixed point Gaussian. For the same range of the spectral density exponent, incorporating the Berry phase…
The interaction between strong correlation and Berry curvature is an open territory of in the field of quantum materials. Here we report large anomalous Hall conductivity in a Kondo lattice ferromagnet USbTe which is dominated by intrinsic Berry curvature at low temperatures. However, the Berry curvature induced anomalous Hall effect does not follow the scaling relation derived from Fermi liquid theory. The onset of the Berry curvature contribution coincides with the Kondo coherent temperature. Combined with ARPES measurement and DMFT calculations, this strongly indicates that Berry curvature …
We show that it is possible to topologically induce or quench the Kondo resonance in the conductance of a single-molecule magnet (S>1/2) strongly coupled to metallic leads. This can be achieved by applying a magnetic field perpendicular to the molecule easy axis and works for both full- and half-integer spin cases. The effect is caused by the Berry phase interference between two quantum tunneling paths of the molecule's spin. We have calculated the renormalized Berry phase oscillations of the Kondo peaks as a function of the transverse magnetic field as well as the conductance of the molecule …
Controlling the interplay between localized spins and itinerant electrons at the oxide interfaces can lead to exotic magnetic states. Here we devise SrTiO3/LaTiO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures with varied thickness of the LaTiO3 layer (n monolayers) to investigate the magnetic interactions in the two-dimensional electron gas system. The heterostructures exhibit significant Kondo effect when the LaTiO3 layer is rather thin (n = 2, 10), manifesting the strong interaction between the itinerant electrons and the localized magnetic moments at the interfaces, while the Kondo effect is greatly inhibited wh…
We present a careful and thorough microscopic derivation of the Kondo Hamiltonian for single-molecule magnets (SMMs) transistors. When the molecule is strongly coupled to metallic leads, we show that by applying a transverse magnetic field it is possible to topologically induce or quench the Kondo effect in the conductance of a SMM with either an integer or a half-integer spin S>1/2. This topological Kondo effect is due to the Berry phase interference between multiple quantum tunneling paths of the spin. We calculate the renormalized Berry phase oscillations of the two Kondo peaks as a functio…
Order by disorder is a decision making process for frustrated systems but often leads to simple answers. We study order by disorder in the kagome Kondo model known for its complexity seeking rich decision making capabilities. At half filling and large Kondo coupling to hopping ratio $J_K/t$, the full manifold of 120$^o$ kagome ground states are degenerate at second order in $t/J_K$. We show this degeneracy lifts at sixth order when a fermion can hop around a hexagon and feel the Berry flux induced by a given spin texture. Using Monte-Carlo we then seek the ground state of this sixth order Hami…
Heavy fermion systems contain not only strong electron correlations, which promote a rich set of quantum phases, but also a large spin-orbit coupling, which tends to endow the electronic states a topological character. Kondo insulators are understood in terms of a lattice of local moments coupled to conduction electrons in a half-filled band, i.e., with a dense population of about one electron per unit cell. Here, we propose that a new class of Kondo insulator arises when the conduction-electron band is nearly empty ( or, equivalently, full ) . We demonstrated the effect through a honeycomb An…
Heavy fermion systems represent a prototypical setting to study magnetic quantum phase transitions. A particular focus has been on the physics of Kondo destruction, which captures quantum criticality beyond the Landau framework of order-parameter fluctuations. In this context, we study the spin one-half Kondo-Heisenberg model on a honeycomb lattice at half filling. The problem is approached from the Kondo destroyed, antiferromagnetically ordered insulating phase. We describe the local moments in terms of a coarse grained quantum non-linear sigma model, and show that the skyrmion defects of the…
The quantum critical properties of the sub-Ohmic spin-1/2 spin-boson model and of the Bose-Fermi Kondo model have recently been discussed controversially. The role of the Berry phase in the breakdown of the quantum-to-classical mapping of quantum criticality in the spin-isotropic Bose-Fermi Kondo model has been discussed previously. In the present article, some of the subtleties underlying the functional integral representation of the spin-boson and related models with spin anisotropy are discussed. To this end, an introduction to spin coherent states and spin path integrals is presented with …
We study one dimensional {\it extended} Kondo lattice model, described by the $t-J$ Hamiltonian for conduction electrons away from half filling and the Heisenberg Hamiltonian for localized spins at half filling. Following Shankar,\cite{Shankar} we find an effective field theory for this model, where doped holes are represented by massless Dirac fermions (holons) and spin excitations are fractionalized into relativistic bosons (spinons). These holons and spinons interact via U(1) gauge fluctuations. Effects of Berry phase to the localized spins disappear due to the presence of Kondo couplings, …
The interplay between Kondo screening and magnetic interactions is central to comprehending the intricate phases in heavy-fermion compounds. However, the role of the itinerant magnetic order, which is driven by the conducting (c) electrons, has been largely uncharted in the context of heavy-fermion systems due to the scarcity of material candidates. Here we demonstrate the coexistence of the coherent Kondo screening and d-orbital ferromagnetism in material system La$_{1-x}$Ce$_x$Co$_2$As$_2$, through comprehensive thermodynamic and electrical transport measurements. Additionally, using angle-r…
Synergic effect of electronic correlation and spin-orbit coupling is an emerging topic in topological materials. Central to this rapidly developing area are the prototypes of strongly correlated heavy-fermion systems. Recently, some Ce-based compounds are proposed to host intriguing topological nature, among which the electronic properties of CeSb are still under debate. In this paper, we report a comprehensive study combining magnetic and electronic transport measurements, and electronic band structure calculations of this compound to identify its topological nature. Quantum oscillations are …
We consider the theory of Kondo effect and Fano factor energy dependence for magnetic impurity (Co) on graphene. We have performed a first principles calculation and find that the two dimensional $E_1$ representation made of $d_{xz},d_{yz}$ orbitals is likely to be responsible for the hybridization and ultimately Kondo screening for cobalt on graphene. There are few high symmetry sites where magnetic impurity atom can be adsorbed. For the case of Co atom in the middle of hexagon of carbon lattice we find anomalously large Fano $q$-factor, $q\approx 80$ and strongly suppressed coupling to condu…
We investigate properties of the ground state of a light quark matter with heavy quark impurities. This system exhibits the "QCD Kondo effect" where the interaction strength between a light quark near the Fermi surface and a heavy quark increases with decreasing energy of the light quark towards the Fermi energy, and diverges at some scale near the Fermi energy, called the Kondo scale. Around and below the Kondo scale, we must treat the dynamics nonperturbatively. As a typical nonperturbative method to treat the strong coupling regime, we adopt a mean-field approach where we introduce a conden…
Nontrivial topology in condensed matter systems enriches quantum states of matter, to go beyond either the classification into metals and insulators in terms of conventional band theory or that of symmetry broken phases by Landau's order parameter framework. So far, focus has been on weakly interacting systems, and little is known about the limit of strong electron correlations. Heavy fermion systems are a highly versatile platform to explore this regime. Here we report the discovery of a giant spontaneous Hall effect in the Kondo semimetal Ce3Bi4Pd3 that is noncentrosymmetric but preserves ti…
When a conduction electron couples with a non-coplanar localized magnetic moment, the realspace Berry curvature is exerted to cause the geometrical Hall effect, which is not simply proportional to the magnetization. So far, it has been identified in the case mostly where the non-coplanar magnetic order is present on the sublattice of conduction electrons. Here, we demonstrate that the geometrical Hall effect shows up even without long-range magnetic order of conduction electrons, as induced by non-coplanar exchange fields from the localized magnetic moments, in hole-doped phyrochlore molybdate…
The manifestation of Weyl fermions in strongly correlated electron systems is of particular interest. We report evidence for Weyl fermions in the heavy fermion semimetal YbPtBi from electronic structure calculations, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, magnetotransport and calorimetric measurements. At elevated temperatures where $4f$-electrons are localized, there are triply degenerate points, yielding Weyl nodes in applied magnetic fields. These are revealed by a contribution from the chiral anomaly in the magnetotransport, which at low temperatures becomes negligible due to the influ…
Magnetic orders characterized by multiple ordering vectors harbor noncollinear and noncoplanar spin textures and can be a source of unusual electronic properties through the spin Berry phase mechanism. We theoretically show that such multiple-$Q$ states are stabilized in itinerant magnets in the form of superpositions of collinear up-up-down-down (UUDD) spin states, which accompany the density waves of vector and scalar chirality. The result is drawn by examining the ground state of the Kondo lattice model with classical localized moments, especially when the Fermi surface is tuned to be parti…

We develop a field theory of quantum magnets and magnetic (semi)metals, which is suitable for the analysis of their universal and topological properties. The systems of interest include collinear, coplanar and general non-coplanar magnets. At the basic level, we describe the dynamics of magnetic moments using smooth vector fields in the continuum limit. Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction is captured by a non-Abelian vector gauge field, and chiral spin couplings related to topological defects appear as higher-rank antisymmetric tensor gauge fields. We distinguish type-I and type-II magnets by th…
