The quantum critical properties of the sub-Ohmic spin-1/2 spin-boson model and of the Bose-Fermi Kondo model have recently been discussed controversially. The role of the Berry phase in the breakdown of the quantum-to-classical mapping of quantum criticality in the spin-isotropic Bose-Fermi Kondo model has been discussed previously. In the present article, some of the subtleties underlying the functional integral representation of the spin-boson and related models with spin anisotropy are discussed. To this end, an introduction to spin coherent states and spin path integrals is presented with a focus on the spin-boson model. It is shown that, even for the Ising-anisotropic case as in the spin-boson model, the path integral in the continuum limit in the coherent state representation involves a Berry phase term. As a result, the effective action for the spin degrees of freedom does not assume the form of a Ginzburg-Landau-Wilson functional. The implications of the Berry-phase term for the quantum-critical behavior of the spin-boson model are discussed. The case of arbitrary spin is also considered.
We use the full-density matrix (FDM) numerical renormalization group (NRG) method to calculate the equilibrium dynamical correlation function $C(ω)$ of the spin operator $σ_z$ at finite temperature for the sub-Ohmic spin-boson model. A peak is observed at the frequency $ω_{T}\sim T$ in the curve of $C(ω)$. The curve merges with the zero temperature $C(ω)$ in $ω\gg ω_{T}$ and deviate significantly from the power-law form $ω^{\pm s}$ of the zero temperature curve in $ω\llω_{T}$.
The influence of dissipation on quantum tunneling in the spin-boson model with a sub-Ohmic bath is studied by a variational calculation. By examining the evolution of solutions of the variational equation with the coupling strength near the phase boundary, we are able to present a scenario of discontinuous transition in sub-Ohmic dissipation case in accord with Ginzburg-Landau theory. Based on the constructed picture, it is shown that the critical point found in the general way is not thermodynamically the critical point, but the point where the second energy minimum begins to develop. The tru…
In this work, the quantum phase transition in the sub-Ohmic spin-boson model is studied using a single-mode approximation, by combining the rotating wave transformation and the transformations used in the numerical renormalization group (NRG). Analytical results for the critical coupling strength $α_c$, the magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$, and the spin-spin correlation function $C(ω)$ at finite temperatures are obtained and further confirmed by numerical results. We obtain the same $α_c$ as the mean-field approximation. The critical exponents are classical: $β=1/2$, $δ=3$, $γ=1$, $x=1/2$, $y_t^…
The spin-boson model has nontrivial quantum phase transitions in the sub-Ohmic regime. For the bath spectra exponent $0 \leqslant s<1/2$, the bosonic numerical renormalization group (BNRG) study of the exponents $β$ and $δ$ are hampered by the boson state truncation which leads to artificial interacting exponents instead of the correct Gaussian ones. In this paper, guided by a mean-field calculation, we study the order parameter function $m(τ=α-α_c, ε, Δ)$ using BNRG. Scaling analysis with respect to the boson state truncation $N_{b}$, the logarithmic discretization parameter $Λ$, and the tunn…
A continuous time cluster algorithm for two-level systems coupled to a dissipative bosonic bath is presented and applied to the sub-ohmic spin-Boson model. When the power s of the spectral function J(w) \propto w^s is smaller than 1/2, the critical exponents are found to be classical, mean-field like. Potential sources for the discrepancy with recent renormalization group predictions are traced back to the effect of a dangerously irrelevant variable.
The topological property of boson-fermion mixture in a one-dimensional optical superlattice is studied and the topological insulating phase of interacting boson-fermion mixture characterized by a nontrivial Berry phase is identified. The single-particle and boson-fermion exchanging excitation spectrums are calculated and we identify the boson-fermion exchanging excitation as the gapless topological excitation in the topological phase of the mixture. The different kinds of excitations are explained explicitly from the competition among the bulk gap, the on-site boson-boson and boson-fermion int…
Study of dissipative quantum phase transitions in the Ohmic spin-boson model is numerically challenging in a dense limit of environmental modes. In this work, large-scale numerical simulations are carried out based on the variational principle. The validity of variational calculations, spontaneous breakdown of symmetries, and quantum fluctuations and correlations in the Ohmic bath are carefully analyzed, and the critical coupling as well as exponents are accurately determined in the weak tunneling and continuum limits. In addition, quantum criticality of the Ohmic bath is uncovered both in the…
We investigate a spin-boson model with two boson baths that are coupled to two perpendicular components of the spin by employing the density matrix renormalization group method with an optimized boson basis. It is revealed that in the deep sub-Ohmic regime there exists a novel second-order phase transition between two types of doubly degenerate states, which is reduced to one of the usual type for nonzero tunneling. In addition, it is found that expectation values of the spin components display jumps at the phase boundary in the absence of bias and tunneling.
We present an alternative to the conventional matrix product state representation, which allows us to avoid the explicit local Hilbert space truncation many numerical methods employ. Utilising chain mappings corresponding to linear and logarithmic discretizations of the spin-boson model onto a semi-infinite chain, we apply the new method to the sub-ohmic SBM. We are able to reproduce many well-established features of the quantum phase transition, such as the critical exponent 1/2 predicted by mean-field theory. Via extrapolation of finite-chain results, we are able to determine the infinite-ch…
We revisit the critical behavior of the sub-ohmic spin-boson model. Analysis of both the leading and subleading terms in the temperature dependence of the inverse static local spin susceptibility at the quantum critical point, calculated using a numerical renormalization-group method, provides evidence that the quantum critical point is interacting in cases where the quantum-to-classical mapping would predict mean-field behavior. The subleading term is shown to be consistent with an w/T scaling of the local dynamical susceptibility, as is the leading term. The frequency and temperature depende…
We propose a density matrix renormalization group approach to tackle a two-state system coupled to a bosonic bath with continuous spectrum. In this approach, the optimized phonon scheme is applied to several hundred phonon modes which are divided linearly among the spectrum. Although DMRG cannot resolve very small energy scales, the delocalized-localized transition points of the two-state system are extracted by the extrapolation of the flow diagram results. The phase diagram is compared with the numerical renormalization group results and shows good agreement in both Ohmic and sub-Ohmic cases…
By means of a trial wave function, the multi-D$_1$ ansatz, extensive variational calculations with more than ten thousand parameters have been carried out to study quantum phase transitions in the ground states of a two-impurity system embedded in a common Ohmic bath of bosons. Quantum criticality in both the impurity system and the Ohmic bosonic bath is investigated with relevant transition points and critical exponents determined accurately. With the linear grid of the Ohmic spectral density, our numerical calculations produce a much better description of the ground states with lower energie…
Using the bosonic numerical renormalization group method, we studied the equilibrium dynamical correlation function $C(ω)$ of the spin operator $σ_z$ for the biased sub-Ohmic spin-boson model. The small-$ω$ behavior $C(ω) \propto ω^s$ is found to be universal and independent of the bias $ε$ and the coupling strength $α$ (except at the quantum critical point $α=α_c$ and $ε=0$). Our NRG data also show $C(ω) \propto χ^{2}ω^{s}$ for a wide range of parameters, including the biased strong coupling regime ($ε\neq 0$ and $α> α_c$), supporting the general validity of the Shiba relation. Close to the q…
We investigate the behavior of an $N$-component quantum rotor coupled to a bosonic dissipative bath having a sub-Ohmic spectral density $J(ω) \propto ω^s$ with $s<1$. With increasing dissipation strength, this system undergoes a quantum phase transition from a delocalized phase to a localized phase. We determine the exact critical behavior of this transition in the large-$N$ limit. For $1>s>1/2$, we find nontrivial critical behavior corresponding to an interacting renormalization group fixed point while we find mean-field behavior for $s<1/2$. The results agree with those of the corresponding …
The application of Wilson's Numerical Renormalization Group (NRG) method to dissipative quantum impurity models, in particular the sub-ohmic spin-boson model, has led to conclusions regarding the quantum critical behavior which are in disagreement with those from other methods and which are by now recognized as erroneous. The errors of NRG remained initially undetected because NRG delivered an internally consistent set of critical exponents satisfying hyperscaling. Here we discuss how the conspiracy of two errors - the Hilbert-space truncation error and the mass-flow error - could lead to this…
The transition from weakly damped coherent motion to localization in the context of the spin-boson model has been the subject of numerous studies with distinct behavior depending on the form of the phonon-bath spectral density, $J\left(ω\right)\proptoω^{s}$. Sub-Ohmic ($s<1$) and Ohmic ($s=1$) spectral densities show a clear localization transition at zero temperature and zero bias, while for super-Ohmic ($s>1$) spectral densities this transition disappears. In this work, we consider the influence of the phonon-bath spectral density on the \emph{nonequilibrium} dynamics of a quantum dot with e…
A variational approach based on the multi-coherent-state ansatz with asymmetric parameters is employed to study the ground state of the spin-boson model. Without any artificial approximations except for the finite number of the coherent states, we find the robust Gaussian critical behavior in the whole sub-Ohmic bath regime. The converged critical coupling strength can be estimated with the $1/N$ scaling, where $N $ is the number of the coherent states. It is strongly demonstrated the breakdown of the well-known quantum-to-classical mapping for $1/2<s<1$. In addition, the entanglement entropy …
We discuss a particular source of error in the Numerical Renormalization Group (NRG) method for quantum impurity problems, which is related to a renormalization of impurity parameters due to the bath propagator. At any step of the NRG calculation, this renormalization is only partially taken into account, leading to systematic variation of the impurity parameters along the flow. This effect can cause qualitatively incorrect results when studying quantum critical phenomena, as it leads to an implicit variation of the phase transition's control parameter as function of the temperature and thus t…
We study the ground-state topology and quasiparticle properties in bosonic Mott insulators with two- dimensional spin-orbit couplings in cold atomic optical lattices. We show that the many-body Chern and spin-Chern number can be expressed as an integral of the quasihole Berry curvatures over the Brillouin zone. Using a strong-coupling perturbation theory, for an experimentally feasible spin-orbit coupling, we compute the Berry curvature and the spin Chern number and find that these quantities can be generated purely by interactions. We also compute the quasiparticle dispersions, spectral weigh…

We have carried out analytical and numerical studies of the spin-boson model in the sub-ohmic regime with the influence of both the diagonal and off-diagonal coupling accounted for via the Davydov D1 variational ansatz. While a second-order phase transition is known to be exhibited by this model in the presence of diagonal coupling only, we demonstrate the emergence of a discontinuous first order phase transition upon incorporation of the off-diagonal coupling. A plot of the ground state energy versus magnetization highlights the discontinuous nature of the transition between the isotropic (ze…
By employing the variational approach, density matrix renormalization group (DMRG), exact diagonalization as well as symmetry and mean-field analyses, the ground state properties of the two-bath spin boson model with simultaneous diagonal and off-diagonal coupling are systematically studied in the sub-Ohmic regime. A novel quantum phase transition from a doubly degenerate "localized phase" to the other doubly degenerate "delocalized phase" is uncovered. Via the multi-D1 ansatz as the variational wave function, transition points are determined accurately, consistent with the results from DMRG a…
An analytic ground state is proposed for the unbiased spin-boson Hamiltonian, which is non-Gaussian and beyond the Silbey-Harris ground state with lower ground state energy. The infrared catastrophe in Ohmic and sub-Ohmic bosonic bath plays an important role in determining the degeneracy of the ground state. We show that the infrared divergence associated with the displacement of the nonadiabatic modes in bath may be removed from the proposed ground state for the coupling $α<α_c$. Then $α_c$ is the quantum critical point of a transition from non-degenerate to degenerate ground state and our ca…
We study the breaking of parity in the spin-boson model and demonstrate unique scaling behavior of the magnetization and entanglement around the critical points for the parity breaking after suppressing the infrared divergence existing inherently in the spectral functions for Ohmic and sub-Ohmic dissipations. Our treatment is basically analytical and of generality for all types of the bath. We argue that the conventionally employed spectral function is not fully reasonable and the previous justification of quantum phase transition for localization needs to be more seriously reexamined.
We study the zero temperature mean-field phase diagram of the Bose-Hubbard model in the presence of local coupling between the bosons and an external bath. We consider a coupling that conserves the on-site occupation number, preserving the robustness of the Mott and superfluid phases. We show that the coupling to the bath renormalizes the chemical potential and the interaction between the bosons and reduces the size of the superfluid regions between the insulating lobes. For strong enough coupling, a finite value of hopping is required to obtain superfluidity around the degeneracy points where…
Motivated by the global phase diagram of antiferromagnetic heavy-fermion metals, we study the Kondo effect from the perspective of a nonlinear sigma model in the one dimensional Kondo-Heisenberg model. We focus on the effects of the instanton configurations of the sigma-model field and the associated Berry phase. Guided by the results derived using bosonization methods, we demonstrate that the Kondo singlet formation is accompanied by an emergent Berry phase. This Berry phase also captures the competition between the Kondo-singlet formation and spin Peierls correlations. Related effects are li…
We present a detailed description of the recently proposed numerical renormalization group method for models of quantum impurities coupled to a bosonic bath. Specifically, the method is applied to the spin-boson model, both in the Ohmic and sub-Ohmic cases. We present various results for static as well as dynamic quantities and discuss details of the numerical implementation, e.g., the discretization of a bosonic bath with arbitrary continuous spectral density, the suitable choice of a finite basis in the bosonic Hilbert space, and questions of convergence w.r.t. truncation parameters. The met…
By employing the spin-boson model in a dense limit of environmental modes, quantum entanglement and correlation of sub-Ohmic and Ohmic baths for dissipative quantum phase transitions are numerically investigated based on the variational principle. With several measures borrowed from quantum information theory, three different types of singularities are found for the first-order, second-order, and Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transitions, respectively, and the values of transition points and critical exponents are accurately determined. Besides, the scaling form of the quantum discord in the Ohmic…
It has been recently shown that the particle-hole symmetric Anderson impurity model can be mapped onto a $Z_2$ slave-spin theory without any need of additional constraints. Here we prove by means of Numerical Renormalization Group that the slave-spin behaves in this model like a two-level system coupled to a sub-ohmic dissipative environment. It follows that the $Z_2$ symmetry gets spontaneously broken at zero temperature, which we find can be identified with the on-set of Kondo coherence, being the Kondo temperature proportional to the square of the order parameter. Since the model is numeric…
The spin-boson model (or the dissipative two-state system) is a model for the study of dissipation and decoherence in quantum mechanics. The spin-boson model with Ohmic dissipation is an integrable theory, related to several other integrable systems including the anisotropic Kondo and resonant level models. Here we consider the problem of computing the overlaps between two ground states corresponding to different values of parameters of the Ohmic spin-boson Hamiltonian. We argue that this can be understood as a part of the problem of quantizing the mKdV/sine-Gordon integrable hierarchy. The ma…
The phase diagram of the Bose-Fermi Kondo model contains an SU(2)-invariant Kondo-screened phase separated by a continuous quantum phase transition from a Kondo-destroyed local moment phase. We analyze the effect of the Berry phase term of the spin path integral on the quantum critical properties of this quantum impurity model. For a range of the power-law exponent characterizing the spectral density of the dissipative bosonic bath, neglecting the influence of the Berry phase term makes the fixed point Gaussian. For the same range of the spectral density exponent, incorporating the Berry phase…
We show that the Bose-Fermi Kondo model (BFKM), which may find applicability both to certain dissipative mesoscopic qubit devices and to heavy fermion systems described by the Kondo lattice model, can be mapped exactly onto the Caldeira-Leggett model. This mapping requires an ohmic bosonic bath and an Ising-type coupling between the latter and the impurity spin. This allows us to conclude unambiguously that there is an emergent Kosterlitz-Thouless quantum phase transition in the BFKM with an ohmic bosonic bath. By applying a bosonic numerical renormalization group approach, we thoroughly probe…
A vector bosonic field coupled to the electronic spin is treated by means of the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method. In the Bose Kondo model with a sub-Ohmic density of states $ρ_{B}(ω) \propto ω^{s}$ with s=0.2, two contributions to the spin susceptibility, the Curie term T^{-1} and the term T^{-s} due to bosonic fluctuations, are observed separately. This result indicates the existence of a residual moment and a hidden critical behavior. By including hybridization with itinerant electrons, a quantum critical point is identified between this local-moment state and the Kondo singlet st…
Higgs spectroscopy, the study of Higgs bosons of a superconductor, is an emerging field in studying superconductivity. Here we show that the Berry curvature and the quantum metric of bands play a central role in the Higgs mode generation. They allow the detection of Higgs bosons even when the conventional contribution from the band curvature vanishes. Furthermore, we show that the Higgs mode can couple to the external electromagnetic field linearly when mediated by the Berry connection. As a result, we predict the existence of a second harmonic generation, in addition to the well-known third h…
We consider an $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic quantum Heisenberg chain where each site is coupled to an independent bosonic bath with ohmic dissipation. The coupling to the bath preserves the global SO(3) spin symmetry. Using large-scale, approximation-free quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we show that any finite coupling to the bath suffices to stabilize long-range antiferromagnetic order. This is in stark contrast to the isolated Heisenberg chain where spontaneous breaking of the SO(3) symmetry is forbidden by the Mermin-Wagner theorem. A linear spin-wave theory analysis confirms that the memory …
We investigate the quantum phase transition of the O(3) nonlinear $σ$ model {\it without Berry phase} in two spacial dimensions. Utilizing the $CP^{1}$ representation of the nonlinear $σ$ model, we obtain an effective action in terms of bosonic spinons interacting via compact U(1) gauge fields. Based on the effective field theory, we find that the bosonic spinons are deconfined to emerge at the quantum critical point of the nonlinear $σ$ model. It is emphasized that the deconfinement of spinons is realized {\it in the absence of Berry phase}. This is in contrast to the previous study of Senthi…
We study the ground state phase diagram of a one-dimensional hard-core bosonic model with nearest-neighbor interactions (XXZ model) where every site is coupled Ohmically to an independent but identical reservoir, hereby generalizing spin-boson models to interacting spin-boson systems. We show that a bath-induced Bose metal phase can occur in the ground state phase diagram away from half filling. This phase is compressible, gapless, and conducting but not superfluid. At haf-filling, only a Luttinger liquid and a charge density wave are found. The phase transition between them is of Kosterlitz-T…
We study the competition between Kondo physics and dissipation within an Anderson model of a magnetic impurity level that hybridizes with a metallic host and is also coupled, via the impurity charge, to the displacement of a bosonic bath having a spectral density proportional to ω^s. As the impurity-bath coupling increases from zero, the effective Coulomb interaction between two electrons in the impurity level is progressively renormalized from its repulsive bare value until it eventually becomes attractive. For weak hybridization, this renormalization in turn produces a crossover from a conve…
The physics of a quantum dot with electron-electron interactions is well captured by the so called "Universal Hamiltonian" if the dimensionless conductance of the dot is much higher than unity. Within this scheme interactions are represented by three spatially independent terms which describe the charging energy, the spin-exchange and the interaction in the Cooper channel. In this paper we concentrate on the exchange interaction and generalize the functional bosonization formalism developed earlier for the charging energy. This turned out to be challenging as the effective bosonic action is fo…
We study the thermal drag between two mesoscopic quantum Hall (QH) circuits. Each circuit consists of Ohmic contact perfectly coupled to quantum Hall edge states. The drag is caused by strong capacitive coupling between Ohmic contacts. The non-equilibirum conditions and the electron-electron interaction are taken into account by using the non-equilibrium bosonization technique. The thermal drag current in the passive circuit, the noise power of the corresponding heat current, and the Fano factor are calculated and analyzed.
We study the local and topological features of Berry phases associated with the adiabatic transport of vortices in a d-wave superconductor of lattice fermions. At half filling, where the local Berry curvature must vanish due to symmetries, the phase associated with the exchange of two vortices is found to vanish as well, implying that vortices behave as bosons. Away from half filling, and in the limit where the magnetic length is large compared to the lattice constant, the local Berry curvature gives rise to an intricate flux pattern within the large magnetic unit cell. This renders the Berry …
We develop an exact map of all states and operators from 2D lattices of spins-$1/2$ into lattices of fermions and bosons with mutual semionic statistical interaction that goes beyond previous dualities of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ lattice gauge theories because it does not rely on imposing local conservation laws and captures the motion of ``charges'' and ``fluxes'' on equal footing. This map allows to explicitly compute the Berry phases for the transport of fluxes in a large class of symmetry enriched topologically ordered states with emergent $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge fields that includes chiral, non-chiral…
Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulation has uncovered nonzero Berry curvature and bosonic edge states in hardcore-Bose-Hubbard model on the gapped honeycomb lattice. The competition between the chemical potential and staggered onsite potential leads to an interesting quantum phase diagram comprising superfluid phase, Mott insulator, and charge density wave insulator. In this paper, we present a semiclassical perspective of this system by mapping to a spin-$1/2$ quantum XY model. We give an explicit analytical origin of the quantum phase diagram, the Berry curvatures, and the edge states using sem…
This paper presents a connection between the topological properties of hardcore bosons and that of magnons in quantum spin magnets. We utilize the Haldane-like hardcore bosons on the honeycomb lattice as an example. We show that this system maps to a spin-$1/2$ quantum XY model with a next-nearest-neighbour Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction. We obtain the magnon excitations of the quantum spin model and compute the edge states, Berry curvature, thermal and spin Nernst conductivities. Due to the mapping from spin variables to bosons, the hardcore bosons possess the same nontrivial topological pr…
Luttinger liquids (LLs) are one dimensional systems with well-understood instabilities due to umklapp or backscattering. We study a generalization of the Luttinger model, which incorporates a time reversal symmetry breaking interaction producing a complex forward scattering amplitude ($g_2$ process). The resulting low energy state is still a LL, and belongs to the family of interacting Schulz-Shastry models. Remarkably, it becomes increasingly robust against additional perturbations -- for purely imaginary $g_2$, both umklapp and local backscattering are always irrelevant. Changing the phase o…
The quantitative description of the quantum entanglement between a qubit and its environment is considered. Specifically, for the ground state of the spin-boson model, the entropy of entanglement of the spin is calculated as a function of $α$, the strength of the ohmic coupling to the environment, and $ε$, the level asymmetry. This is done by a numerical renormalization group treatment of the related anisotropic Kondo model. For $ε=0$, the entanglement increases monotonically with $α$, until it becomes maximal for $α\lim 1^-$. For fixed $ε>0$, the entanglement is a maximum as a function of $α$…
For phase transitions in dissipative quantum impurity models, the existence of a quantum-to-classical correspondence has been discussed extensively. We introduce a variational matrix product state approach involving an optimized boson basis, rendering possible high-accuracy numerical studies across the entire phase diagram. For the sub-ohmic spin-boson model with a power-law bath spectrum $\propto \w^s$, we confirm classical mean-field behavior for $s<1/2$, correcting earlier numerical renormalization-group results. We also provide the first results for an XY-symmetric model of a spin coupled …
By quantum Monte Carlo simulations of bosons in gapped honeycomb lattices, we show the existence of bosonic edge states. For single layer honeycomb lattice, bosonic edge states can be controlled to appear, cross the gap and merge into bulk states by an on-site potential applied on the outmost sites of the boundary. On bilayer honeycomb lattice, bosonic edge state traversing the gap at half filling is demonstrated. The topological origin of the bosonic edge states is discussed with pseudo Berry curvature. The results will simulate experimental studies of these exotic bosonic edge states with ul…
We study the new phases of interacting Dirac matter that host novel Berry signatures. We predict a topological Lifshitz phase transition caused by the changes of a Dirac cone intersection from a semimetalic phase to helical insulating or metallic phases. These helical phases provide the examples of gapless topological phase where spectral gap is not required for a topological protection. To realize nodal helical phases one would need to consider isotropic infinite-range inter-particle interaction. This interaction could emerge because of a momentum conserving scattering of electron from a boso…
We show that the critical behavior of quantum systems undergoing a percolation transition is dramatically affected by their topological Berry phase $2πρ$. For irrational $ρ$, we demonstrate that the low-energy excitations of diluted Josephson-junctions arrays, quantum antiferromagnets, and interacting bosons are spinless fermions with fractal spectrum. As a result, critical properties not captured by the usual Ginzburg-Landau-Wilson description of phase transitions emerge, such as complex critical exponents, log-periodic oscillations and dynamically broken scale-invariance.
