We propose a density matrix renormalization group approach to tackle a two-state system coupled to a bosonic bath with continuous spectrum. In this approach, the optimized phonon scheme is applied to several hundred phonon modes which are divided linearly among the spectrum. Although DMRG cannot resolve very small energy scales, the delocalized-localized transition points of the two-state system are extracted by the extrapolation of the flow diagram results. The phase diagram is compared with the numerical renormalization group results and shows good agreement in both Ohmic and sub-Ohmic cases.
We generalize Emery and Kivelson's (EK) bosonization-refermionization treatment of the 2-channel Kondo model to finite system size and on the EK-line analytically construct its exact eigenstates and finite-size spectrum. The latter crosses over to conformal field theory's (CFT) universal non-Fermi-liquid spectrum (and yields the most-relevant operators' dimensions), and further to a Fermi-liquid spectrum in a finite magnetic field. Our approach elucidates the relation between bosonization, scaling techniques, the numerical renormalization group (NRG) and CFT. All CFT's Green's functions are re…
Recently, in the Luttinger liquid phase of the one-dimensional generalized antiferromagnetic Kitaev spin-1/2 model, it has been found that the abelian bosonization formulas of the local spin operators only respect the exact discrete nonsymmorphic symmetry group of the model, not the emergent U(1) symmetry. In this work, we perform a renormalization group (RG) study to provide explanations for the origin of the U(1) breaking terms in the bosonization formulas. We find that the lack of U(1) symmetry originates from the wavefunction renormalization effects in the spin operators along the RG flow …
We study the metal-insulator transition in a very general two-channel transport model, where charge carriers are coupled to a correlated background medium. The fluctuations of the background were described as bosonic excitations, having the ability to relax. Employing an analytical projector-based renormalization technique, we calculate the ground-state and spectral properties of this fermion-boson model and corroborate recent numerical results, which indicate---in dependence on the `stiffness' of the background medium---a Luttinger-liquid to charge-density-wave transition for the one-dimensio…
We study the one-dimensional two-orbital Hubbard model with general local interactions including a pair-hopping term. The model might be realized in one-dimensional transition-metal nanowires. Phase diagrams at T=0 are obtained by numerical integration of renormalization group equations and bosonization. Particular attention is paid to the effects of orbital degeneracy (or near-degeneracy), interactions favoring locally high-spin configurations, and velocity differences. Dynamical symmetry enlargement and duality approaches are employed to determine ground states and to understand quantum phas…
We formulate a momentum-shell renormalization group (RG) procedure that can be used in theories containing both bosons and fermions with a Fermi surface. We focus on boson-fermion couplings that are nearly forward-scattering, {\it i.e.} involving small momentum transfer ($\vec{q} \approx 0$) for the fermions. Special consideration is given to phase space constraints that result from the conservation of momentum and the imposition of ultraviolet cutoffs. For problems where the energy and momentum scale similarly (dynamic exponent $z = 1$), we show that more than one formalism can be used and th…

The spin-boson model has nontrivial quantum phase transitions in the sub-Ohmic regime. For the bath spectra exponent $0 \leqslant s<1/2$, the bosonic numerical renormalization group (BNRG) study of the exponents $β$ and $δ$ are hampered by the boson state truncation which leads to artificial interacting exponents instead of the correct Gaussian ones. In this paper, guided by a mean-field calculation, we study the order parameter function $m(τ=α-α_c, ε, Δ)$ using BNRG. Scaling analysis with respect to the boson state truncation $N_{b}$, the logarithmic discretization parameter $Λ$, and the tunn…
We extend the numerical renormalization-group method to Bose-Fermi Kondo models (BFKMs), describing a local moment coupled to a conduction band and a dissipative bosonic bath. We apply the method to the Ising-symmetry BFKM with a bosonic bath spectral function $η(ω)\propto ω^s$, of interest in connection with heavy-fermion criticality. For $0<s<1$, an interacting critical point, characterized by hyperscaling of exponents and $ω/T$-scaling, describes a quantum phase transition between Kondo-screened and localized phases. Connection is made to other results for the BFKM and the spin-boson model.

We describe the generalization of Wilson's Numerical Renormalization Group method to quantum impurity models with a bosonic bath, providing a general non-perturbative approach to bosonic impurity models which can access exponentially small energies and temperatures. As an application, we consider the spin-boson model, describing a two-level system coupled to a bosonic bath with power-law spectral density, J(omega) ~ omega^s. We find clear evidence for a line of continuous quantum phase transitions for subohmic bath exponents 0<s<1; the line terminates in the well-known Kosterlitz-Thouless tran…
In this paper we give an introduction to the numerical density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) algorithm, from the perspective of the more general matrix product state (MPS) formulation. We cover in detail the differences between the original DMRG formulation and the MPS approach, demonstrating the additional flexibility that arises from constructing both the wavefunction and the Hamiltonian in MPS form. We also show how to make use of global symmetries, for both the Abelian and non-Abelian cases.
The problem of a quantum Ising degree of freedom coupled to a gapless bosonic mode appears naturally in many one dimensional systems, yet surprisingly little is known how such a coupling affects the Ising quantum critical point. We investigate the fate of the critical point in a regime, where the weak coupling renormalization group (RG) indicates a flow toward strong coupling. Using a renormalization group analysis and numerical density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations we show that, depending on the ratio of velocities of the gapless bosonic mode and the Ising critical fluctuat…
We theoretically describe the charge ordering (CO) metal-insulator transition based on a quasi-one-dimensional extended Hubbard model, and investigate the finite temperature ($T$) properties across the transition temperature, $T_{\rm CO}$. In order to calculate $T$ dependence of physical quantities such as the spin susceptibility and the electrical resistivity, both above and below $T_{\rm CO}$, a theoretical scheme is developed which combines analytical methods with numerical calculations. We take advantage of the renormalization group equations derived from the effective bosonized Hamiltonia…
We present an overview of the Density Matrix Renormalization Group and its connections to Quantum Groups, Matrix Products and Conformal Field Theory. We emphasize some common formal structures in all these theories. We also propose two-dimensional extensions of the variational matrix product ansatzs.
We consider hardcore bosons in two coupled chain of one dimensional lattices at half filling with repulsive intra-chain interaction and inter-chain attraction. This can be mapped on to a coupled chain of spin-1/2 XXZ model with inter chain ferromagnetic coupling. We investigate various phases of hardcore bosons (and related spin model) at zero temperature by density matrix renormalization group method. Apart from the usual superfluid and density wave phases, pairing of inter chain bosons leads to the formation of novel phases like pair-superfluid and density wave of strongly bound pairs. We di…
The generalization of Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) approach as implemented in quantum chemistry, to the case of non-orthogonal orbitals is carefully analyzed. This generalization is attractive from the physical point of view since it allows a better localization of the orbitals. The possible implementation difficulties and drawbacks are estimated. General formulae for hamiltonian matrix elements useful in DMRG calculations are given.
The purpose of this paper is (i) to present a generic and fully functional implementation of the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) algorithm, and (ii) to describe how to write additional strongly-correlated electron models and geometries by using templated classes. Besides considering general models and geometries, the code implements Hamiltonian symmetries in a generic way and parallelization over symmetry-related matrix blocks.
We introduce a Lagrangian formulation of the Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG). We present Lagrangians which when minimised yield the optimal DMRG wavefunction in a variational sense, both within the general matrix product ansatz, as well as within the canonical form of the matrix product that is constructed within the DMRG sweep algorithm. Some of the results obtained are similar to elementary expressions in Hartree-Fock theory, and we draw attention to such analogies. The Lagrangians introduced here will be useful in developing theories of analytic response and derivatives in the D…
We present a detailed description of the recently proposed numerical renormalization group method for models of quantum impurities coupled to a bosonic bath. Specifically, the method is applied to the spin-boson model, both in the Ohmic and sub-Ohmic cases. We present various results for static as well as dynamic quantities and discuss details of the numerical implementation, e.g., the discretization of a bosonic bath with arbitrary continuous spectral density, the suitable choice of a finite basis in the bosonic Hilbert space, and questions of convergence w.r.t. truncation parameters. The met…
We introduce a new numerical method for the solution of self-consistent equations in the cluster mean-field theory. The method uses the density matrix renormalization group method to solve the associated cluster problem. We obtain an accurate critical value of the supersolid-superfluid transitions in the hard-core bosonic Hubbard model on a triangular lattice, which is comparable with the recent quantum Monte Carlo results. This algorithm is applicable to more general classes of models with a larger number of degrees of freedom.
Several density-matrix renormalization group methods have been proposed to compute the momentum- and frequency-resolved dynamical correlation functions of low-dimensional strongly correlated systems. The most relevant approaches are discussed in this contribution. Their applications in various studies of quasi-one-dimensional strongly correlated systems (spin chains, itinerant electron systems, electron-phonon systems) are reviewed.
We developed a density matrix renormalization-group technique to study quantum Hall fractions of fast rotating bosons. In this paper we present a discussion of the method together with the results which we obtain in three distinct cases of the narrow channel, cylinder and spherical geometries. In the narrow channel case, which is relevant to anisotropic confining traps in the limit of extremely fast rotation, we find a series of zero-temperature phase transitions in the strongly interacting regime as a function of the interaction strength between bosons. We compute energies and density profile…
We describe here the extension of the density matrix renormalization group algorithm to the case where Hamiltonian has a non-Abelian global symmetry group. The block states transform as irreducible representations of the non-Abelian group. Since the representations are multi-dimensional, a single block state in the new representation corresponds to multiple states of the original density matrix renormalization group basis. We demonstrate the usefulness of the construction via the one-dimensional Hubbard model as the symmetry group is enlarged from $U(1) \times U(1)$, up to $SU(2) \times SU(2)$…
We investigate the effect of long-range Coulomb interaction on the quasiparticle properties and the dielectric function of clean three-dimensional Weyl semimetals at zero temperature using a functional renormalization group (FRG) approach. The Coulomb interaction is represented via a bosonic Hubbard-Stratonovich field which couples to the fermionic density. We derive truncated FRG flow equations for the fermionic and bosonic self-energies and for the three-legged vertices with two fermionic and one bosonic external legs. We consider two different cutoff schemes --- cutoff in fermionic or boson…
We develop a correction to the density matrix used in density matrix renormalization group calculations to take into account the incompleteness of the environment block. The correction allows successful calculations using only a single site in the center of the system, rather than the standard two sites, improving typical computation times by a factor of two to four. In addition, in many cases where ordinary DMRG can get stuck in metastable configurations, the correction eliminates the sticking. We test the new method on the Heisenberg S=1 chain.
We discuss a particular source of error in the Numerical Renormalization Group (NRG) method for quantum impurity problems, which is related to a renormalization of impurity parameters due to the bath propagator. At any step of the NRG calculation, this renormalization is only partially taken into account, leading to systematic variation of the impurity parameters along the flow. This effect can cause qualitatively incorrect results when studying quantum critical phenomena, as it leads to an implicit variation of the phase transition's control parameter as function of the temperature and thus t…
We study the renormalization of the Fermi surface coupled to a massless boson near three spatial dimensions. For this, we set up a Wilsonian RG with independent decimation procedures for bosons and fermions, where the four-fermion interaction "Landau parameters" run already at tree level. Our explicit one loop analysis resolves previously found obstacles in the renormalization of finite density field theory, including logarithmic divergences in non-local interactions and the appearance of multilogarithms. The key aspects of the RG are the above tree level running, and a UV-IR mixing between vi…
We present a consistent fusion of functional renormalization group and mean-field theory which explicitly introduces a bosonic field via a Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation at the critical scale, at which the order sets in. We show that a minimal truncation of the flow equations, that neglects order parameter fluctuations, is integrable and fulfills fundamental constraints as the Goldstone theorem and the Ward identity connected with the broken global symmetry. To introduce the bosonic field, we present a technique to factorize the most singular part of the vertex, even when the full depende…
We propose an analytic response theory for the density matrix renormalization group whereby response properties correspond to analytic derivatives of density matrix renormalization group observables with respect to the applied perturbations. Both static and frequency-dependent response theories are formulated and implemented. We evaluate our pilot implementation by calculating static and frequency dependent polarizabilities of short oligo-di-acetylenes. The analytic response theory is competitive with dynamical density matrix renormalization group methods and yields significantly improved accu…
We study a mixture of ultracold spin-half fermionic and spin-one bosonic atoms in a shallow optical lattice where the bosons are coupled to the fermions via both density-density and spin-spin interactions. We consider the parameter regime where the bosons are in a superfluid ground state, integrate them out, and obtain an effective action for the fermions. We carry out a renormalization group analysis of this effective fermionic action at low temperatures, show that the presence of the spinor bosons may lead to a separation of Fermi surfaces of the spin-up and spin-down fermions, and investiga…
We review the properties of two coupled fermionic chains, or ladders, under a magnetic field parallel to the lattice plane. Results are computed by complementary analytical (bosonization) and numerical (density-matrix renormalization group) methods which allows a systematic comparison. Limiting cases such as coupled bands and coupled chains regimes are discussed. We particularly focus on the evolution of the superconducting correlations under increasing field and on the presence of irrational magnetization plateaus. We found the existence of large doping-dependent magnetization plateaus in the…
The superconducting instability of the Fermi liquid state is investigated by considering anisotropic electron-boson couplings. Both electron-electron interactions and anisotropic electron-boson couplings are treated with a renormalization-group method that takes into account retardation effects. Considering a non-interacting circular Fermi surface, we find analytical solutions for the flow equations and derive a set of generalized Eliashberg equations. Electron-boson couplings with different momentum dependences are studied, and we find superconducting instabilities of the metallic state with …
Wilson's numerical renormalization group (NRG) method for solving quantum impurity models yields a set of energy eigenstates that have the form of matrix product states (MPS). White's density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) for treating quantum lattice problems can likewise be reformulated in terms of MPS. Thus, the latter constitute a common algebraic structure for both approaches. We exploit this fact to compare the NRG approach for the single-impurity Anderson model to a variational matrix product state approach (VMPS), equivalent to single-site DMRG. For the latter, we use an ``unfolde…
We develop a semi-analytical approach beyond the Born-Markov approximation to study the quench dynamics of the spin-boson model in the strong-coupling regime ($α\leq1/2$) for the Ohmic bath. The basic idea in our approach is to write an effective time-dependent model for the dynamics of the system coupled to the bosonic bath after integrating out high-frequency bath modes. By applying this procedure to the Heisenberg equations of motion, we derive a set of flow equations for the system parameters as a function of time. The final flow equations look similar to those of the equilibrium renormali…
In various multiorbital systems, the emergence of the orbital fluctuations and its role on the pairing mechanism attract increasing attention. To archive deep understanding on these issues, we perform the functional-renormalization-group (fRG) study for the two-orbital Hubbard model. The vertex corrections for the electron-boson coupling ($U$-VC), which are dropped in the Migdal-Eliashberg gap equation, are obtained by solving the RG equation. We reveal that the dressed electron-boson coupling for the charge-channel, $U_{eff}^c$, becomes much larger than the bare Coulomb interaction, $U^0$, du…
We extended the Density Matrix Renormalization Group method to study the real time dynamics of interacting one dimensional spinless Fermi systems by applying the full time evolution operator to an initial state. As an example we describe the propagation of a density excitation in an interacting clean system and the transport through an interacting nano structure.
We calculate thermodynamic properties of soft-core lattice bosons with on-site $n$-body interactions using up to twelfth and tenth order strong coupling expansion in one and two dimensional cubic lattices at zero temperature. Using linked cluster techniques, we show that it is possible to exactly renormalize the two-body interactions for quasiparticle excitations and ground-state energy by resumming the three and four body terms in the system, which suggests that all higher-body on-site interactions may be exactly and perturbatively resummed into the two-body terms for similar system observabl…
Within the two-dimensional repulsive t-t'-Hubbard model, an attractive coupling in the d-wave pairing channel is induced by antiferromagnetic fluctuations. We investigate this coupling using functional renormalization group equations. The momentum dependent d-wave coupling can be bosonized by the use of scale dependent field transformations. We propose an effective coarse grained model for the Hubbard model which is based on the exchange of antiferromagnetic and d-wave collective bosons.
The application of Wilson's Numerical Renormalization Group (NRG) method to dissipative quantum impurity models, in particular the sub-ohmic spin-boson model, has led to conclusions regarding the quantum critical behavior which are in disagreement with those from other methods and which are by now recognized as erroneous. The errors of NRG remained initially undetected because NRG delivered an internally consistent set of critical exponents satisfying hyperscaling. Here we discuss how the conspiracy of two errors - the Hilbert-space truncation error and the mass-flow error - could lead to this…
Functional renormalization yields a simple unified description of bosons at zero temperature, in arbitrary space dimension $d$ and for $M$ complex fields. We concentrate on nonrelativistic bosons and an action with a linear time derivative. The ordered phase can be associated with a nonzero density of (quasi) particles $n$. The behavior of observables and correlation functions in the ordered phase depends crucially on the momentum $k_{ph}$, which is characteristic for a given experiment. For the dilute regime $k_{ph}\gtrsim n^{1/d}$ the quantum phase transition is simple, with the same ``mean …
We describe how density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) can be used to solve the full-CI problem in quantum chemistry. As an illustration of the potential of this method, we apply it to a paramagnetic molecule. In particular, we show the effect of various basis set, the scaling as the fourth power of the size of the problem, and compare the DMRG with other methods.
We study a spinless level that hybridizes with a fermionic band and is also coupled via its charge to a dissipative bosonic bath. We consider the general case of a power-law hybridization function $Γ(\w)\propto |\w|^r$ with $r\ge 0$, and a bosonic bath spectral function $B(\w)\propto \w^s$ with $s\ge -1$. For $r<1$ and $\mathrm{max}(0,2r-1)<s<1$, this Bose-Fermi quantum impurity model features a continuous zero-temperature transition between a delocalized phase, with tunneling between the impurity level and the band, and a localized phase, in which dissipation suppresses tunneling in the low-e…
A kind of least action principle is introduced for the discrete time evolution of one-dimensional quantum lattice models. Based on this principle, we obtain an optimal condition for the matrix product states on succeeding time slices generated by the real-time density matrix renormalization group method. This optimization can also be applied to classical simulations of quantum circuits. We discuss the time reversal symmetry in the fully optimized MPS.
We construct a nonperturbative nonequilibrium theory for graphene electrons interacting via the instantaneous Coulomb interaction by combining the functional renormalization group method with the nonequilibrium Keldysh formalism. The Coulomb interaction is partially bosonized in the forward scattering channel resulting in a coupled Fermi-Bose theory. Quantum kinetic equations for the Dirac fermions and the Hubbard-Stratonovich boson are derived in Keldysh basis, together with the exact flow equation for the effective action and the hierarchy of one-particle irreducible vertex functions, taking…
The numerical renormalization group (NRG) is rephrased as a variational method with the cost function given by the sum of all the energies of the effective low-energy Hamiltonian. This allows to systematically improve the spectrum obtained by NRG through sweeping. The ensuing algorithm has a lot of similarities to the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) when targeting many states, and this synergy of NRG and DMRG combines the best of both worlds and extends their applicability. We illustrate this approach with simulations of a quantum spin chain and a single impurity Anderson model (SI…
We describe an extension to the density matrix renormalization group method incorporating real time evolution into the algorithm. Its application to transport problems in systems out of equilibrium and frequency dependent correlation functions is discussed and illustrated in several examples. We simulate a scattering process in a spin chain which generates a spatially non-local entangled wavefunction.
Renormalization of non-magnetic and magnetic impurities due to electron double occupancy prohibition is derived analytically by an improved Gutzwiller approximation. Non-magnetic impurities are effectively weakened by the same renormalization factor as that for the hopping amplitude, whereas magnetic impurities are strengthened by the square root of the spin-exchange renormalization factor, in contrast to results by the conventional Gutzwiller approximation. We demonstrate it by showing that transition matrix elements of number operators between assumed excited states and between an assumed gr…
We use the functional renormalization group approach with partial bosonization in the particle-particle channel to study the effect of order parameter fluctuations on the BCS-BEC crossover of superfluid fermions in three dimensions. Our approach is based on a new truncation of the vertex expansion where the renormalization group flow of bosonic two-point functions is closed by means of Dyson-Schwinger equations and the superfluid order parameter is related to the single particle gap via a Ward identity. We explicitly calculate the chemical potential, the single-particle gap, and the superfluid…
We extend the active space decomposition method, recently developed by us, to more than two active sites using the density matrix renormalization group algorithm. The fragment wave functions are described by complete or restricted active-space wave functions. Numerical results are shown on a benzene pentamer and a perylene diimide trimer. It is found that the truncation errors in our method decrease almost exponentially with respect to the number of renormalization states M, allowing for numerically exact calculations (to a few microhartrees or less) with M = 128 in both cases. This rapid conv…
Path integral techniques for the density matrix of a one-dimensional statistical system near a boundary previously employed in black-hole physics are applied to providing a new interpretation of the density matrix renormalization group: its efficacy is due to the concentration of quantum states near the boundary.
This article reviews recent developments in the theoretical understanding and the numerical implementation of variational renormalization group methods using matrix product states and projected entangled pair states.
We provide an extensive study of the sub-ohmic spin-boson model with power law density of states J(ω)=ω^s (with 0<s<1), focusing on the equilibrium dynamics of the three possible spin components, from very weak dissipation to the quantum critical regime. Two complementary methods, the bosonic Numerical Renormalization Group (NRG) and Majorana diagrammatics, are used to explore the physical properties in a wide range of parameters. We show that the bosonic self-energy is the crucial ingredient for the description of critical fluctuations, but that many-body vertex corrections need to be incorpo…
We present a new hybrid multiconfigurational method based on the concept of range-separation that combines the density matrix renormalization group approach with density functional theory. This new method is designed for the simultaneous description of dynamical and static electron-correlation effects in multiconfigurational electronic structure problems.
We present a comprehensive analysis of quantum fluctuation effects in the superfluid ground state of an attractively interacting Fermi system, employing the attractive Hubbard model as a prototype. The superfluid order parameter, and fluctuations thereof, are implemented by a bosonic Hubbard-Stratonovich field, which splits into two components corresponding to longitudinal and transverse (Goldstone) fluctuations. Physical properties of the system are computed from a set of approximate flow equations obtained by truncating the exact functional renormalization group flow of the coupled fermion-b…
In some cases the state of a quantum system with a large number of subsystems can be approximated efficiently by the density matrix renormalization group, which makes use of redundancies in the description of the state. Here we show that the achievable efficiency can be much better when performing density matrix renormalization group calculations in the Heisenberg picture, as only the observable of interest but not the entire state is considered. In some non-trivial cases, this approach can even be exact for finite bond dimensions.
We present the first implementation of the relativistic quantum chemical two- and four-component density matrix renormalization group algorithm that includes a variational description of scalar-relativistic effects and spin-orbit coupling. Numerical results based on the four-component Dirac-Coulomb Hamiltonian are presented for the standard reference molecule for correlated relativistic benchmarks: thallium hydride.
