The temperature-dependent evolution pattern of 5f electrons helps to elucidate the long-standing itinerant-localized dual nature in plutonium-based compounds. In this work, we investigate the correlated electronic states of PuIn3 dependence on temperature by using a combination of the density functional theory and the dynamical mean-field theory. Not only the experimental photoemission spectroscopy is correctly reproduced, but also a possible hidden 5f itinerant-localized crossover is identified. Moreover, it is found that the quasiparticle multiplets from the many-body transitions gradually enhance with decreasing temperature, accompanied by the hybridizations with 5f electrons and conduction bands. The temperature-induced variation of Fermi surface topology suggests a possible electronic Lifshitz transition and the onset of magnetic order at low temperature. Finally, the ubiquitous existence orbital selective 5f electron correlation is also discovered in PuIn3. These illuminating results shall enrich the understanding on Pu-based compounds and serve as critical predictions for ongoing experimental research.
We have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments on paramagnetic UFeGa5 using soft X-ray synchrotron radiation (hn=500eV) and derived the bulk- and U 5f-sensitive electronic structure of UFeGa5. Although the agreement between the experimental band structure and the LDA calculation treating U 5f electrons as being itinerant is qualitative, the morphology of the Fermi surface is well explained by the calculation, suggesting that the U 5f states can be essentially understood within the itinerant-electron model.
The electronic properties of Cerium (Ce) and ytterbium (Yb) intermetallic compounds may display a more local or more itinerant character depending on the interplay of the exchange interactions among the $4f$ electrons and the Kondo coupling between $4f$ and conduction electrons. For the more itinerant case, the materials form heavy-fermions once the Kondo effect is developed at low temperatures. Hence, a temperature variation occurs in the electronic structure that can be traced by investigating the optical conductivity ($σ(ω)$) spectra. Remarkably, the temperature variation in the $σ(ω)$ spec…
We report Electron Spin Resonance of the itinerant ferromagnets LaCrGe3, CeCrGe3, and PrCrGe3. These compounds show well defined and very similar spectra of itinerant Cr 3d spins in the paramagnetic temperature region. Upon cooling and crossing the Cr-ferromagnetic ordering (below around 90 K) strong spectral structures start to dominate the resonance spectra in a quite different manner in the three compounds. In the Ce- and Pr-compounds the resonance is only visible in the paramagnetic region whereas in the La-compound the resonance can be followed far below the ferromagnetic ordering tempera…
The inference of Ying et al. [EPL 104, 67005 (2013)] of a composition-induced change from c-axis ordered-moment alignment in a collinear A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure (AFMI) at small x to ab-plane alignment in an unknown AFM structure (AFMII) at larger x in Ca(1-x)Sr(x)Co(2-y)As(2) with the body-centered tetragonal ThCr2Si2 structure is confirmed. Our major finding is an anomalous magnetic behavior in the crossover region 0.2 < x < 0.3 between these two phases. In this region the magnetic susceptibility versus temperature chi_ab(T) measured with magnetic fields H applied in the ab p…
Cerium (Ce)-based heavy-fermion materials have a characteristic double-peak structure (mid-IR peak) in the optical conductivity [$σ(ω)$] spectra originating from the strong conduction ($c$)--$f$ electron hybridization. To clarify the behavior of the mid-IR peak at a low $c$-$f$ hybridization strength, we compared the $σ(ω)$ spectra of the isostructural antiferromagnetic and heavy-fermion Ce compounds with the calculated unoccupied density of states and the spectra obtained from the impurity Anderson model. With decreasing $c$-$f$ hybridization intensity, the mid-IR peak shifts to the low-energ…
The electronic structures of cerium-based ternary 122 compounds Ce$M_{2}$Si$_{2}$, where $M =$ Ru, Rh, Pd, and Ag, are investigated systematically by using the density functional theory in combination with the single-site dynamical mean-field theory. The momentum-resolved spectral functions, total and 4$f$ partial density of states, self-energy functions, and valence state fluctuations are calculated. The obtained results are in good accord with the available experimental data. It is suggested that, upon increasing atomic number from Ru to Ag, the 4$f$ electrons should become increasingly loca…
The localized-itinerant nature of Ce-4$f$ valence electrons in heavy fermion compound CeIn$_{3}$ under pressure is studied thoroughly by means of the combination of density functional theory and single-site dynamical mean-field theory. The detailed evolutions of electronic structures of CeIn$_{3}$, including total and partial density of states, momentum-resolved spectral functions, and valence state histograms etc., are calculated in a wide pressure range where the corresponding volume compression $V/V_0 \in [0.6,1.0]$ (here $V_0$ is the experimental crystal volume) at $T \cong 116$ K. Upon in…
NaOsO$_{\text{3}}$ undergoes a metal-insulator transition (MIT) at 410 K, concomitant with the onset of antiferromagnetic order. The excitation spectra have been investigated through the MIT by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Os L$_{\text{3}}$ edge. Low resolution ($ΔE \sim$ 300 meV) measurements over a wide range of energies reveal that local electronic excitations do not change appreciably through the MIT. This is consistent with a picture in which structural distortions do not drive the MIT. In contrast, high resolution ($ΔE \sim $ 56 meV) measurements show that the well-d…
The layered cobaltite [Ca$_2$CoO$_3$]$_{0.62}$[CoO$_2$], often expressed as the approximate formula Ca$_3$Co$_4$O$_9$, is a promising candidate for efficient oxide thermoelectrics but an origin of its unusual thermoelectric transport is still in debate. Here we investigate \textit{in-plane} anisotropy of the transport properties in a broad temperature range to examine the detailed conduction mechanism. The in-plane anisotropy between $a$ and $b$ axes is clearly observed both in the resistivity and the thermopower, which is qualitatively understood with a simple band structure of the triangular…
A Kondo-lattice theory is applied to the crossover between local-moment magnetism for almost half fillings of electrons and itinerant-electron magnetism away from the half filling. In clean systems with no disorder, the bandwidth W^* of quasiparticles is non-zero and of the order of |J| at T=0K even in the limit of the half filling, with J the superexchange interaction constant between nearest neighbors. The so called Gutzwiller's term also contributes to W^* away from the half filling; it is approximately proportional to doping concentrations measured from the half filling. Magnetism is enhan…
Around discontinuous (first-order) magnetic phase transitions the strong caloric response of materials to the application of small fields is widely studied for the development of solid-state refrigeration. Typically strong magnetostructural coupling drives such transitions and the attendant substantial hysteresis dramatically reduces the cooling performance. In this context we describe a purely electronic mechanism which pilots a first-order paramagnetic-ferromagnetic transition in divalent lanthanide compounds and which explains the giant non-hysteretic magnetocaloric effect recently discover…
Here, by conducting a systematic $^{89}$Y NMR study, we explore the nature of the magnetic ground state in a newly discovered iron-based superconductor YFe$_2$Ge$_2$. An incoherent-to-coherent crossover due to the Hund's coupling induced electronic correlation is revealed below the crossover temperature $T^*\sim 75\pm15\,\mathrm{K}$. During the electronic crossover, both the Knight shift ($K$) and the bulk magnetic susceptibility ($χ$) exhibit a similar nonmonotonic temperature dependence, and a so-called Knight shift anomaly is also revealed by a careful $K$-$χ$ analysis. Such an electronic c…
Quantum critical points exist at zero temperature, yet, experimentally their influence seems to extend over a large part of the phase diagram of systems such as heavy-fermion compounds and high-temperature superconductors. Theoretically, however, it is generally not known over what range of parameters the physics is governed by the quantum critical point. We answer this question for the spin-density wave to fermi-liquid quantum critical point in the two-dimensional Hubbard model. This problem is in the $d=2,z=2$ universality class. We use the Two-Particle Self-Consistent approach, which is acc…
Electronic structure calculations were performed on the compound CoS$_2$, an itinerant ferromagnet whose magnetic properties can be understood in terms of spin fluctuation theory. We have identified nesting features in the Fermi surface of the compound, active for long wavelength spin fluctuations. The electronic structure of the material is close to a half-metal. We show the importance of introducing spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in the calculations, that partially destroys the half-metallicity of the material. By means of transport properties calculations, we have quantified the influence of SOC…

We report the results of magnetic, heat-capacity, electrical and magnetoresistance measurements on Ho4RhAl and Er4RhAl, characterized by 3 sites for rare-earths (R). Antiferromagnetic ordering sets in at (T_N =) about 8.8 and 4.0 K respectively. While Ho compound appears to enter into a complex spin-glass phase at T less thanT_N (at nearly 5 K), spin-glass component appears to set in essentially almost at T_N for the Er case. The loss of the spin-disorder contribution in the magnetically ordered state is not pronounced, mimicking that in Gd2PdSi3, a compound which now attracts interest in the …
Physical properties of polycrystalline CeCrGe$_{3}$ and LaCrGe$_{3}$ have been investigated by x-ray absorption spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$, isothermal magnetization M(H), electrical resistivity $ρ(T)$, specific heat C($T$) and thermoelectric power S($T$) measurements. These compounds are found to crystallize in the hexagonal perovskite structure (space group \textit{P6$_{3}$/mmc}), as previously reported. The $ρ(T)$, $χ(T)$ and C($T$) data confirm the bulk ferromagnetic ordering of itinerant Cr moments in LaCrGe$_{3}$ and CeCrGe$_{3}$ with $T_{C}$ = 90 K and 70 K respectively…
We report the thermal expansion, critical behavior, magnetocaloric effect (MCE), and magnetoresistance ($MR$) on the polycrystalline Mn$_{1.4}$Fe$_{3.6}$Si$_{3}$ compound around the ferromagnetic transition. A large negative volume thermal expansion ($α_{\rm V}\sim -20 \times 10^{-6}$ K$^{-1}$) is observed across the transition temperature with a strong anisotropic variation of lattice parameters in the $ab$-plane. The anisotropic magnetoelasticity arises from the competition between magnetic ordering and structural deformation which could be responsible for the large MCE ($ΔS_{\rm m} \simeq -…
Critical thermodynamics close to a metamagnetic quantum critical endpoint (QCEP) in a metal is discussed within the framework of spin-fluctuation theory. We analyze the effective potential for the Ising order parameter that is renormalized by spin-fluctuations and acquires a characteristic temperature dependence. The resulting magnetic field, H, and temperature, T, dependence of the magnetization, specific heat, thermal expansion, magnetostriction, susceptibility and the Grüneisen parameter are determined, and the crossover lines in the (H,T) phase diagram are specified. We point out that the …
High-energy-resolution core-level and valence-band photoelectron spectroscopic studies were performed for the heavy Fermion uranium compounds UGe2, UCoGe, URhGe, URu2Si2, UNi2Al3, UPd2Al3, and UPt3 as well as typical localized and itinerant uranium compounds to understand the relationship between the uranium valence state and their core-level spectral line shapes. In addition to the main line and high-binding energy satellite structure recognized in the core-level spectra of uranium compounds, a shoulder structure on the lower binding energy side of the main lines of localized and nearly local…
Electrons in solids have been conventionally classified as either band-like itinerant ones or atomic-like localized ones depending on their properties. For heavy Fermion (HF) compounds, however, the f electrons show both itinerant and localized behaviours depending on temperature. Above the characteristic temperature T*, which is typically of the order of few K to few tens K, their magnetic properties are well described by the ionic f-electron models, suggesting that the f-electrons behave as 'localized' electrons. On the other hand, well below T*, their Fermi surfaces (FS's) have been observe…
Spin crossover is expected to enrich unusual physical states in various types of condensed matter. Through inelastic neutron scattering, we study the spin-state excitations in the canonical and advanced platform, LaCoO$_3$, and reveal that the spatial correlation robustly maintains the seven-Co-site size below 300 K and the internal Co-$d$ electrons are spatially delocalized. By combining theoretical calculations, this dynamical short-range order is identified as a new collective unit for describing spin-state with dual spin-state nature beyond the conventional one-Co-site classification.
Finite-temperature ($T$) properties of a Kitaev model defined on a honeycomb lattice are investigated by a quantum Monte Carlo simulation, from the viewpoint of fractionalization of quantum $S=1/2$ spins into two types of Majorana fermions, itinerant and localized. In this system, the entropy is released successively at two well-separated $T$ scales, as a clear indication of the thermal fractionalization. We show that the high-$T$ crossover, which is driven by itinerant Majorana fermions, is closely related with the development of nearest-neighbor spin correlations. On the other hand, the low-…
We present a first evaluation of the potential for spin crossover (SCO) compounds to be considered as a new class of giant mechanocaloric effect material. From literature data on the variation of the spin crossover temperature with pressure, we estimate the maximum available adiabatic temperature change for several compounds and the relatively low pressures that may be required to observe these effects.
In an effort to explore the differences between rare-earth-based and uranium-based heavy Fermion (HF) compounds that reflect the underlying difference between local 4$f$ moments and itinerant 5$f$ moments we analyze scaling laws that relate the low temperature neutron spectra of the primary ("Kondo-esque") spin fluctuation to the specific heat and susceptibility. While the scaling appears to work very well for the rare earth intermediate valence compounds, for a number of key uranium compounds the scaling laws fail badly. There are two main reasons for this failure. First, the presence of anti…
A microscopic mean-field theory of the phase coexistence between ferromagnetism and superconductivity in the weakly ferromagnetic itinerant electron system is constructed, while incorporating a realistic mechanism for superconducting pairing due to the exchange of critical spin fluctuations. The self-consistent solution of the resulting equations determines the superconducting transition temperature which is shown to depend strongly on the exchange splitting. The effect of phase crossover from isotropic (Heisenberg-like) to uniaxial (Ising-like) spin fluctuations near the quantum phase transit…
To unravel the interplay between the strong electronic correlation and itinerant-localized dual nature in atypical f electron systems, we employed the density functional theory in combination with the single-site dynamical mean-field theory to systematically investigate the electronic structures of CeSb and USb. We find that the 4f states in CeSb are mostly localized which show a weak quasi-particle resonance peak near the Fermi level. Conversely, the 5f electrons in USb display partially itinerant feature, accompanied by mixed-valence behavior and prominent valence state fluctuations. Particu…
In solid materials, the parameters relevant to quantum effects, such as the spin quantum number, are basically determined and fixed at the chemical synthesis, which makes it challenging to control the amount of quantum correlations. We propose and demonstrate a method for active control of the classical-quantum crossover in magnetic insulators by applying external pressure. As a concrete example, we perform high-field, high-pressure measurements on CsCuCl$_3$, which has the structure of weakly-coupled spin chains. The magnetization process experiences a continuous evolution from the semi-class…
We address the fundamental question of crossover from localized to itinerant state of a paradigmatic heavy fermionmaterial CeIrIn5. The temperature evolution of the one electron spectra and the optical conductivity is predicted from first principles calculation. The buildup of coherence in the form of a dispersive many body feature is followed in detail and its effects on the conduction electrons and optical conductivity of the material is revealed. We find multiple hybridization gaps and link them to the crystal structure of the material. Our theoretical approach explains the multiple peak st…
Recent studies demonstrated that there may appear different novel states in correlated systems close to localized-itinerant crossover. Especially favourable conditions for that are met in low-dimensional and in frustrated systems. In this paper I discuss on concrete examples some of such novel states. In particular, for some spinels and triangular systems there appears a "partial Mott transition", in which first some finite clusters (dimers, trimes, tetramers, heptamers) go over to the itinerant regime, and the real bulk Mott transition occurs only later. Also some other specific possibilities…
We examine the influence of the excess of interstitial Fe on the magnetic properties of Fe$_{1+y}$Te compounds. Because in iron chalcogenides the correlations are stronger than in the iron arsenides, we assume in our model that some of the Fe orbitals give rise to localized magnetic moments. These moments interact with each other via exchange interactions as well as phonon-mediated biquadratic interactions that favor a collinear double-stripe state, corresponding to the ordering vectors $\left(\pmπ/2,\pmπ/2\right)$. The remaining Fe orbitals are assumed to be itinerant, giving rise to the firs…
Below the Kondo temperature the heavy Fermion compound YbRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ shows a well defined Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) with local Yb$^{3+}$ properties. We report a detailed analysis of the ESR intensity which gives information on the number of ESR active centers relative to the ESR of well localized Yb$^{3+}$ in YPd$_3$:Yb. The ESR lineshape is investigated regarding contributions from itinerant centers. From the ESR of monoisotopic $^{174}$YbRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ we could exclude unresolved hyperfine contributions to the lineshape.
We theoretically study the stability of magnetic skyrmion crystals (SkXs) in chiral cubic antiferromagnets with the EuPtSi hosting unconventional nanometric SkXs in mind. By performing numerical simulations for a minimal effective spin model with the long-range Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and the multiple-spin interaction arising from itinerant nature of electrons, we clarify two key ingredients for the emergence of the SkXs in EuPtSi: One is the low-symmetric ordering vectors that lead to the field-direction sensitive SkXs in an external magnetic field, while the other is the synergy be…
A crossover from a non-Fermi liquid to a Fermi liquid phase in Yb$_2$Ni$_{12}$P$_7$ is observed by analyzing electrical resistivity $ρ(T)$, magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$, specific heat $C(T)$, and thermoelectric power $S(T)$ measurements. The electronic contribution to specific heat, $C_{e}(T)$, behaves as $C_{e}(T)/T \sim -\ln(T)$ for 5 K $< T <$ 15 K, which is consistent with non-Fermi liquid behavior. Below $T \sim$ 4 K, the upturn in $C_{e}(T)/T$ begins to saturate, suggesting that the system crosses over into a Fermi-liquid ground state. This is consistent with robust $ρ(T) - ρ_0 = AT^2$…
SrRu2O6 has unique magnetic properties. It is characterized by a very high Néel temperature, despite its quasi-two-dimensional structure, and has a magnetic moment more than twice reduced compared to the formal ionic count. First principles calculations show that only an ideal Neel ordering in the Ru plane is possible, with no other metastable magnetic solutions, and, highly unusually, yield dielectric gaps for both antiferromagnetic and nonmagnetic states. We demonstrate that this strange behavior is the result of the formation of very specific electronic objects, recently suggested for a geo…
The intermediate valence compound YbAl$_3$ is known to undergo a hybridization process between itinerant and localized electrons. The resulting heavy Fermi liquid remains non-magnetic and non-superconducting. A microscopic understanding of the hybridization process in YbAl$_3$ is still lacking although some characteristic temperature and energy scales have been identified. Here we report results from novel spectroscopic measurements based on quasiparticle scattering. From the conductance spectra taken over a wide temperature range, we deduce that the band renormalization and hybridization proc…
We report on a ternary intermetallic compound, "YMn2Zn20", comprising a pyrochlore lattice made of Mn atoms. A series of In-doped single crystals undergo no magnetic long-range order down to 0.4 K, in spite of the fact that the Mn atom carries a local magnetic moment at high temperatures, showing Curie-Weiss magnetism. However, In-rich crystals exhibit spin-glass transitions at approximately 10 K due to a disorder arising from the substitution, while, with decreasing In content, the spin-glass transition temperature is reduced to 1 K. Then, heat capacity divided by temperature approaches a lar…
We have performed in-plane transport measurements on the two-dimensional organic salt $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]Cl. A variable (gas) pressure technique allows for a detailed study of the changes in conductivity through the insulator-to-metal transition. We identify four different transport regimes as a function of pressure and temperature (corresponding to insulating, semi-conducting, ''bad metal'', and strongly correlated Fermi liquid behaviours). Marked hysteresis is found in the transition region, which displays complex physics that we attribute to strong spatial inhomogeneities. A…
We study the transport properties of frustrated itinerant magnets comprising localized {\it classical} moments, which interact via exchange with the conduction electrons. Strong frustration stabilizes a liquidlike spin state, which extends down to temperatures well below the effective Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction scale. The crossover into this state is characterized by spin structure factor enhancement at wave vectors smaller than twice the Fermi wave vector magnitude. The corresponding enhancement of electron scattering generates a resistivity upturn at decreasing temperatures.
We measure the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) resistivity $ρ_{xy}$ in thin films of the itinerant ferromagnet SrRuO$_{3}$. At low temperatures, the AHE coefficient $R_{s}$ varies with $ρ_{xx}^2$ in agreement with side jumps and Berry phase models. At higher temperatures, $R_{s}$ reaches a peak and then changes sign just below $T_{c}$. We find that for all films studied $R_{s}$ scales with resistivity in the entire ferromagnetic phase. SrRuO$_{3}$ films with very low residual resistivity exhibit field induced sign changes of the AHE at low temperatures, suggesting an $ω_c τ$ related crossover.
The path from the charge density wave antiferromagnet NdNiC$_2$ to a noncentrosymmetric superconductor LaNiC$_2$ has been studied by gradual replacement of Nd by La ions. The evolution of physical properties has been explored by structural, magnetic, transport, magnetoresistance and specific heat measurements. With the substitution of La for Nd, the Peierls temperature is gradually suppressed, which falls within the BCS mean-field relation for chemical pressure with a critical concentration of $x_c$ = 0.38. As long as charge density wave is maintained, the antiferromagnetic ground state remain…
The strongly exchange enhanced Pauli paramagnet LaCo$_9$Si$_4$ is found to exhibit an itinerant metamagnetic phase transition with indications for metamagnetic quantum criticality. Our investigation comprises magnetic, specific heat, and NMR measurements as well as ab-initio electronic structure calculations. The critical field is about 3.5 T for $H||c$ and 6 T for $H\bot c$, which is the lowest value ever found for rare earth intermetallic compounds. In the ferromagnetic state there appears a moment of about 0.2 $μ_B$/Co at the $16k$ Co-sites, but sigificantly smaller moments at the 4d and $1…
Focus is given on the macroscopic and microscopic experimental works realized during a decade on the clear case of itinerant metamagnetism in the heavy fermion paramagnetic compound CeRu2Si2 . Emphasis is made on the feedback between the band structure, the exchange coupling and the lattice instability. Sweeps in magnetic field, pressure and temperature feel the pseudogap of this strongly correlated electronic system as well as its equivalent CeRu2Ge2 at a fictitious negative pressure. Some mysteries persist as the complete observation of the FS above the metamagnetic field HM and the detectio…
Neutron diffraction and magnetic susceptibility studies of a polycrystalline SrCr$_2$As$_2$ sample reveal that this compound is an itinerant G-type antiferromagnet below the N${\rm \acute{e}}$el temperature $T_{\textrm N}$ = 590(5) K with the Cr magnetic moments aligned along the tetragonal $c$ axis. The system remains tetragonal to the lowest measured temperature ($\sim$12 K). The lattice parameter ratio $c/a$ and the magnetic moment saturate at about the same temperature below $\sim$ 200 K, indicating a possible magnetoelastic coupling. The ordered moment, $μ=1.9(1)~μ_{\rm B}$/Cr, measured a…
We review the current state of experimental and theoretical investigations of heavy fermion superconductors. We discuss most of the Ce-based compounds like Ce122, Ce115, Ce218 and Ce131 classes and U-based superconductors like UBe_13 and UPd_2Al_3. In the former the emphasis is on the connection to quantum critical phenomena and non-Fermi liquid behaviour. Recent neutron scattering and hydrostatic pressure results on SDW/SC competition in the Ce122 system are included. For the U-compounds we discuss the significance of dual models with both localised and itinerant 5f electrons for mass enhance…
Localized spins and itinerant electrons rarely coexist in geometrically-frustrated spinel lattices. We show that the spinel CoV2O4 stands at the crossover from insulating to itinerant behavior and exhibits a complex interplay between localized spins and itinerant electrons. In contrast to the expected paramagnetism, localized spins supported by enhanced exchange couplings are frustrated by the effects of delocalized electrons. This frustration produces a non-collinear spin state and may be responsible for macroscopic spin-glass behavior. Competing phases can be uncovered by external perturbati…
Synthesizing metastable phase often opens new functions in materials but is a challenging topic. Thin film techniques have advantages to form materials which do not exist in nature since nonequilibrium processes are frequently utilized. In this study, we successfully synthesize epitaxially stabilized new compound of perovskite Eu2+Mo4+O3 as a thin film form by a pulsed laser deposition. Analogous perovskite SrMoO3 is a highly conducting paramagnetic material, but Eu2+ and Mo4+ are not compatible in equilibrium and previous study found more stable pyrochlore Eu23+Mo24+O7 prefers to form. By usi…
Single crystals of monoclinic La$_{5}$Co$_{2}$Ge$_{3}$ were grown using a self-flux method and were characterized by room-temperature powder X-ray diffraction, anisotropic temperature and field dependent magnetization, temperature dependent resistivity, specific heat, and muon spin rotation. La$_{5}$Co$_{2}$Ge$_{3}$ has a Curie temperature ($T_\mathrm{C}$) of 3.8~K and clear signatures of ferromagnetism in magnetization and $μSR$ data, as well as a clear loss of spin disorder scattering in resistivity data and a sharp specific heat anomaly. The magnetism associated with La$_{5}$Co$_{2}$Ge$_{3}…
An effective field theory is derived for the ferromagnetic transition of diffusive electrons at T=0. The static disorder which leads to diffusive electron dynamics induces an effective long-range interaction between the spins of the form 1/r^(2d-2). This leads to unusual scaling behavior at the quantum critical point, which is determined exactly. The crossover from this quantum fixed point to the classical Heisenberg fixed point should be observable in ferromagnetic materials with low Curie temperatures.
The electronic structure of the antiferromagnet uranium nitride (UN) has been studied by angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy using soft X-rays (hn=420-520 eV). Strongly dispersive bands with large contributions from the U 5f states were observed in ARPES spectra, and form Fermi surfaces. The band structure as well as the Fermi surfaces in the paramagnetic phase are well explained by the band-structure calculation treating all the U 5f electrons as being itinerant, suggesting that itinerant description of the U 5f states is appropriate for this compound. On the other hand, changes in the …

Magnetization isotherms of the 5f-electron ferromagnets URhGa, UCoGa and UCo0.98Ru0.02Al were measured at temperatures in the vicinity of their Curie temperature in order to investigate the critical behavior near the ferromagnetic phase transition. These compounds adopt the layered hexagonal ZrNiAl-type structure and exhibit huge uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy. The critical \b{eta}, γ and δ exponents were determined by analyzing Arrott-Noakes plots, Kouvel-Fisher plots, critical isotherms, scaling theory and Widom scaling relations. The values obtained for URhGa and UCoGa can be explai…
We report x-ray absorption and photoemission spectroscopy of the electronic structure in the normal state of metallic YFe2Ge2. The data reveal evidence for large fluctuating spin moments on the Fe sites, as indicated by exchange multiplets appearing in the Fe 3s core level photoemission spectra, even though the compound does not show magnetic order. The magnitude of the multiplet splitting is comparable to that observed in the normal state of the Fe-pnictide superconductors. This shows a connection between YFe2Ge2 and the Fe-based superconductors even though it contains neither pnictogens nor …
These three metallic systems do not exhibit any magnetic ordering despite experiments show the existence of localized moments with large antiferromagnetic exchange: this is a consequence of the strong geometric frustration (Y(Sc)Mn_{2} and LiV_{2}O_{4} have the Pyrochlore structure, while beta-Mn has a more complicated frustrated structure). Another common feature is their very large specific heat coefficient γ=C/T (420 mJ mole^{-1} K^{-2} for LiV_{2}O_{4}). Several explanations have been proposed for this ''3d heavy fermion behavior'', including a 3d-Kondo effect. However the similarities bet…
Bulk rutile RuO$_2$ has long been considered a Pauli paramagnet. Here we report that RuO$_2$ exhibits a hitherto undetected lattice distortion below approximately 900 K. The distortion is accompanied by antiferromagnetic order up to at least 300 K with a small room temperature magnetic moment of approximately 0.05 $μ_B$ as evidenced by polarized neutron diffraction. Density functional theory plus $U$ (DFT+$U$) calculations indicate that antiferromagnetism is favored even for small values of the Hubbard $U$ of the order of 1 eV. The antiferromagnetism may be traced to a Fermi surface instabilit…
The crossover from localized- to itinerant-electron behavior is associated with many intriguing phenomena in condensed-matter physics. In this paper, we investigate the crossover from localized to itinerant regimes in the spinel system Mn$_{1-x}$Co$_x$V$_2$O$_4$. At low Co doping, orbital order (OO) of the localized electrons on the V3+ ions suppresses magnetic frustration by triggering a tetragonal distortion. With Co doping, electronic itinerancy melts the OO and suppresses the structural phase transition while the reduced spin-lattice coupling produces magnetic frustration. Neutron scatteri…
CeB(6) is a model compound exhibiting antiferroquadrupolar (AFQ) order, its magnetic properties being typically interpreted within localized models. More recently, the observation of strong and sharp magnetic exciton modes forming in its antiferromagnetic (AFM) state at both ferromagnetic and AFQ wave vectors suggested a significant contribution of itinerant electrons to the spin dynamics. Here we investigate the evolution of the AFQ excitation upon the application of an external magnetic field and the substitution of Ce with non-magnetic La, both parameters known to suppress the AFM phase. We…
