We prove that it is relatively consistent with the usual axioms of mathematics that all automorphisms of the Calkin algebra are inner. Together with a 2006 Phillips--Weaver construction of an outer automorphism using the Continuum Hypothesis, this gives a complete solution to a 1977 problem of Brown-Douglas-Fillmore. We also give a simpler and self-contained proof of the Phillips--Weaver result.
We consider various quotients of the C*-algebra of bounded operators on a nonseparable Hilbert space, and prove in some cases that, consistently, there are many outer automorphisms.
The Proper Forcing Axiom implies all automorphisms of every Calkin algebra associated with an infinite-dimensional complex Hilbert space and the ideal of compact operators are inner. As a means of the proof we introduce the notion of Polish $ω_1$-trees and cohrerent families of Polish spaces and prove some uniformization results.
In 2007 Phillips and Weaver showed that, assuming the Continuum Hypothesis, there exists an outer automorphism of the Calkin algebra. (The Calkin algebra is the algebra of bounded operators on a separable complex Hilbert space, modulo the compact operators.) In this paper we establish that the analogous conclusion holds for a broad family of quotient algebras. Specifically, we will show that assuming the Continuum Hypothesis, if $A$ is a separable algebra which is either simple or stable, then the corona of $A$ has nontrivial automorphisms. We also discuss a connection with cohomology theory, …
In this paper an automorphism of a unital C*-algebra is said to be /locally inner/ if on any element it agrees with some inner automorphism. We make a fairly complete study of local innerness in von Neumann algebras, incorporating comparison with the pointwise innerness of Haagerup-Stormer. On some von Neumann algebras, including all with separable predual, a locally inner automorphism must be inner. But a transfinitely recursive construction demonstrates that this is not true in general. As an application, we show that the diagonal sum descends to a well-defined map on the automorphism orbits…
We show that an E_0-semigroup acting on the algebra of all adjointable operators on a Hilbert module, which has a spatial product system, arises as the the restriction of a semigroup inner automorphisms.
We obtain some results that relate the Connes spectrum with the innerness of automorphisms in the fixed point local multiplier algebra. The results are variants and/or extensions of corresponding results of Olesen, Pedersen and Stormer [6], [7], [9] and Ara and Mathieu [1] to the case of local multiplier algebras.
Let A be a simple unital AT algebra of real rank zero and Inn(A) the group of inner automorphisms of A. In the previous paper we have shown that the natural map of the group of approximately inner automorphisms into Ext(K_1(A),K_0(A)) oplus Ext(K_0(A),K_1(A)) is surjective; the kernel of this map includes the subgroup of automorphisms which are homotopic to Inn(A). In this paper we consider the quotient of the group of approximately inner automorphisms by the smaller normal subgroup AInn(A) which consists of asymptotically inner automorphisms and describe it as OrderExt(K_1(A),K_0(A)) oplus Ex…
We introduce a class of automorphisms of compact quantum groups which may be thought of as inner automorphisms and explore the behaviour of normal subgroups of compact quantum groups under these automorphisms. We also define the notion of center of a compact quantum group and compute the center for several examples. We briefly touch upon the commutator subgroup of a compact quantum group and discuss how its relation with the center can be different from the classical case.
We prove several rigidity results for corona $C^*$-algebras and Čech-Stone remainders under the assumption of Forcing Axioms. In particular, we prove that a strong version of Todorčević's $\OCA$ and Martin's Axiom at level $\aleph_1$ imply: (i) that if $X$ and $Y$ are locally compact second countable topological spaces, then all homeomorphisms between $βX\setminus X$ and $βY\setminus Y$ are induced by homeomorphisms between cocompact subspaces of $X$ and $Y$; (ii) that all automorphisms of the corona algebra of a separable $C^*$-algebra are trivial in a topological sense; (iii) that if $A$ is …
In functional analysis, approximative properties of an object become precise in its ultrapower. We discuss this idea and its consequences for automorphisms of II_1 factors. Here are some sample results: (1) an automorphism is approximately inner if and only if its ultrapower is aleph_0-locally inner; (2) the ultrapower of an outer automorphism is always outer; (3) for unital *-homomorphisms from a separable nuclear C*-algebra into an ultrapower of a II_1 factor, equality of the induced traces implies unitary equivalence. All statements are proved using operator algebraic techniques, but in the…
We study distinguished subalgebras and automorphisms of boundary quotients arising from algebraic dynamical systems $(G,P,θ)$. Our work includes a complete solution to the problem of extending Bogolubov automorphisms from the Cuntz algebra in $2 \leq p<\infty$ generators to the $p$-adic ring $C^*$-algebra. For the case where $P$ is abelian and $C^*(G)$ is a maximal abelian subalgebra, we establish a picture for the automorphisms of the boundary quotient that fix $C^*(G)$ pointwise. This allows us to show that they form a maximal abelian subgroup of the entire automorphism group. The picture al…
We show that a factor $M$ is full if and only if the $C^*$-algebra generated by its left and right regular representations contains the compact operators. We prove that the bicentralizer flow of a type $\mathrm{III}_1$ factor is always ergodic. As a consequence, for any type $\mathrm{III}_1$ factor $M$ and any $λ\in ]0,1]$, there exists an irreducible AFD type $\mathrm{III}_λ$ subfactor with expectation in $M$. Moreover, any type $\mathrm{III}_1$ factor $M$ which satisfies $M \cong M \otimes R_λ$ for some $λ\in ]0,1[$ has trivial bicentralizer. Finally, we give a counter-example to the charact…
Given a von Neumann algebra $M$ we consider the central extension $E(M)$ of $M.$ For type I von Neumann algebras $E(M)$ coincides with the algebra $LS(M)$ of all locally measurable operators affiliated with $M.$ In this case we show that an arbitrary automorphism $T$ of $E(M)$ can be decomposed as $T=T_a\circ T_ϕ,$ where $T_a(x)=axa^{-1}$ is an inner automorphism implemented by an element $a\in E(M),$ and $T_ϕ$ is a special automorphism generated by an automorphism $ϕ$ of the center of $E(M).$ In particular if $M$ is of type I$_\infty$ then every band preserving automorphism of $E(M)$ is inner…
We obtain two characterizations of the bi-inner Hopf *-automorphisms of a finite-dimensional Hopf C*-algebra, by means of an analysis of the structure of convolution products in this class of Hopf C*-algebra.
We study the topological structure of the automorphism groups of compact quantum groups showing that, in parallel to a classical result due to Iwasawa, the connected component of identity of the automorphism group and of the "inner" automorphism group coincide. For compact matrix quantum groups, which can be thought of as quantum analogues of compact Lie groups, we prove that the inner automorphism group is a compact Lie group and the outer automorphism group is discrete. Applications of this to the study of group actions on compact quantum groups are highlighted. We end with the construction …
Let $C$ be a unital AH-algebra and let $A$ be a unital separable simple \CA with tracial rank zero. Suppose that $ϕ_1, ϕ_2: C\to A$ are two unital monomorphisms. We show that there is a continuous path of unitaries $\{u_t: t\in [0, \infty)\}$ of $A$ such that $$ \lim_{t\to\infty}u_t^*ϕ_1(a)u_t=ϕ_2(a)\tforal a\in C $$ if and only if $[ϕ_1]=[ϕ_2]$ in $KK(C,A),$ $τ\circ ϕ_1=τ\circ ϕ_2$ for all $τ\in T(A)$ and the rotation map ${\tildeη}_{ϕ_1,ϕ_2}$ associated with $ϕ_1$ and $ϕ_2$ is zero. In particular, an automorphism $\af$ on a unital separable simple \CA $A$ in ${\cal N}$ with tracial rank zero…
WZW models are abstract conformal field theories with an infinite dimensional symmetry which accounts for their integrability, and at the same time they have a sigma model description of closed string propagation on group manifolds which, in turn, endows the models with an intuitive geometric meaning. We exploit this dual algebraic and geometric property of WZW models to construct an explicit example of a field-dependent reflection matrix for open-strings in Nappi-Witten model. Demanding the momentum outflow at the boundary to be zero determines a certain combination of the left and right chir…
Let $G$ be a countable discrete amenable group, ${\cal M}$ a McDuff factor von Neumann algebra, and $A$ a separable nuclear weakly dense C$^*$-subalgebra of ${\cal M}$. We show that if two centrally free actions of $G$ on ${\cal M}$ differ up to approximately inner automorphisms then they are outer conjugate by an approximately inner automorphism, in the operator norm topology, which makes $A$ invariant. In addition, when $A$ is unital, simple, and with a unique tracial state and $α$ is an automorphism of $A$ we also show that the aperiodicity of $α$ on the von Neumann algebra is equivalent to…
After discussing some basic facts about generalized module maps, we use the representation theory of the algebra of adjointable operators on a Hilbert B-module E to show that the quotient of the group of generalized unitaries on E and its normal subgroup of unitaries on E is a subgroup of the group of automorphisms of the range ideal of E in B. We determine the kernel of the canonical mapping into the Picard group of the range ideal in terms of the group of its quasi inner automorphisms. As a by-product we identify the group of bistrict automorphisms of the algebra of adjointable operators on …
When $α$ is an approximately inner flow on a C$^*$-algebra $A$ and commutes with an automorphism $γ$ of $A$ we may extend $α$ to a flow $\barα$ on the crossed product $A\times_γZ$ by setting $\barα_t(U)=U$ where $U$ is the canonical unitary implementing $γ$ in $A\times_γZ$ and ask whether $\barα$ is also approximately inner or not. We will consider very specific examples of this type; some of which we can answer affirmatively.
We show that an outer action of a finite abelian group on a simple Cuntz-Krieger algebra is strongly approximately inner in the sense of Izumi if the action is given by diagonal quasi-free automorphisms and the associated matrix is aperiodic. This is achieved by an approximate cohomology vanishing-type argument for the canonical shift restricted to the relative commutant of the set of domain projections of the canonical generating isometries in the fixed point algebra.
Examples of (strongly continuous) one-parameter groups of automorphisms of UHF C*-algebras are given. One example has the property that the infinitesimal generator does not have a union of finite-dimensional subalgebras as a core. (This solves the so-called core problem, raised by S. Sakai, in the negative.) The other has the property of not being classical or commutative, i.e., the one-parameter group is not just an inner perturbation of a one-parameter group which has an increasing sequence of invariant finite-dimensional subalgebras with dense union. (This was certainly expected but has not…
In the present paper derivations and *-automorphisms of algebras of unbounded operators over the ring of measurable functions are investigated and it is shown that all L^0-linear derivations and L^{0}-linear *-automorphisms are inner. Moreover, it is proved that each L^0-linear automorphism of the algebra of all linear operators on a bo-dense submodule of a Kaplansky-Hilbert module over the ring of measurable functions is spatial.
We apply a method inspired by Popa's intertwining-by-bimodules technique to investigate inner conjugacy of MASAs in graph $C^*$-algebras. First we give a new proof of non-inner conjugacy of the diagonal MASA ${\mathcal D}_n$ to its non-trivial image under a quasi-free automorphism, where $E$ is a finite transitive graph. Changing graphs representing the algebras, this result applies to some non quasi-free automorphisms as well. Then we exhibit a large class of MASAs in the Cuntz algebra ${\mathcal O}_n$ that are not inner conjugate to the diagonal ${\mathcal D}_n$.
We classify spectrum-preserving endomorphisms of stable continuous-trace C^*-algebras up to inner automorphism by a surjective multiplicative invariant taking values in finite dimensional vector bundles over the spectrum. Specializing to automorphisms, this gives a different approach to results of Phillips and Raeburn.
We undertake a systematic study of the so-called $2$-adic ring $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal{Q}_2$. This is the universal $C^*$-algebra generated by a unitary $U$ and an isometry $S_2$ such that $S_2U=U^2S_2$ and $S_2S_2^*+US_2S_2^*U^*=1$. Notably, it contains a copy of the Cuntz algebra $\mathcal{O}_2=C^*(S_1, S_2)$ through the injective homomorphism mapping $S_1$ to $US_2$. Among the main results, the relative commutant $C^*(S_2)'\cap \mathcal{Q}_2$ is shown to be trivial. This in turn leads to a rigidity property enjoyed by the inclusion $\mathcal{O}_2\subset\mathcal{Q}_2$, namely the endomorphis…
The problem of inner vs outer conjugacy of subalgebras of certain graph C*-algebras is investigated. For a large class of finite graphs E, we show that whenever $α$ is a vertex-fixing quasi-free automorphism of the corresponding graph C*-algebra C*(E) such that α(\D_E)\neq\D_E, where \D_E is the canonical MASA in C*(E), then α(\D_E)\neq w\D_E w^* for all unitaries w\in C*(E). That is, the two MASAs \D_E and α(\D_E) of C*(E) are outer but not inner conjugate. Passing to an isomorphic C*-algebra by changing the underlying graph makes this result applicable to certain non quasi-free automorphisms…
Let $A$ denote the alternation limit algebra, studied by Hopenwasser and Power, and by Poon, which is the closed direct limit of upper triangular matrix algebras determined by refinement embeddings of multiplicity $r_k$ and standard embeddings of multiplicity $s_k$. It is shown that the quotient of the isometric automorphism group by the approximately inner automorphisms is the abelian group $ \ZZ ^d$ where $d$ is the number of primes that are divisors of infinitely many terms of each of the sequences $(r_k)$ and $(s_k)$. This group is also the group of automorphisms of the fundamental relatio…
For unital $C^*$-algebras $A$ and $B$, we completely characterize the isometric ($*$-) automorphisms of their Banach space projective tensor product $A\otimes^γB$. This leads to the characterization of inner and outer isometric $*$-automorphisms of $A\otimes^γB$, as well. As an application, we provide a partial affirmative answer to a question posed by Kaijser and Sinclair, viz., we prove that for unital $C^*$-algebras $A$ and $B$, the set of norm-one unitaries of $A\otimes^γB$ coincides with $U(A) \otimes U(B)$, where $U(A)$ is the unitary group of $A$. We also establish the fact that the rel…
We investigate the structure of the outer automorphism group of the Cuntz algebra and the closely related problem of conjugacy of MASAa in O_n. In particular, we exhibit an uncountable family of MASAs, conjugate to the standard MASA D_n via Bogolubov automorphisms, that are not inner conjugate to D_n.
We compare the algebras of the quantum automorphism group of finite-dimensional C$^\ast$-algebra $B$, which includes the quantum permutation group $S_N^+$, where $N = \dim B$. We show that matrix amplification and crossed products by trace-preserving actions by a finite Abelian group $Γ$ lead to isomorphic $\ast$-algebras. This allows us to transfer various properties such as inner unitarity, Connes embeddability, and strong $1$-boundedness between the various algebras associated with these quantum groups.
Automorphisms of the canonical core UHF-subalgebra F_n of the Cuntz algebra O_n do not necessarily extend to automorphisms of O_n. Simple examples are discussed within the family of infinite tensor products of (inner) automorphisms of the matrix algebras M_n. In that case, necessary and sufficient conditions for the extension property are presented. It is also addressed the problem of extending to O_n the automorphisms of the diagonal D_n, which is a regular MASA with Cantor spectrum. In particular, it is shown the existence of product-type automorphisms of D_n that are not extensible to (poss…
For a locally compact quantum group $\mathbb{G}$ we define its center, $\mathscr{Z}(\mathbb{G})$, and its quantum group of inner automorphisms, $\mathrm{Inn}(\mathbb{G})$. We show that one obtains a natural isomorphism between $\mathrm{Inn}(\mathbb{G})$ and $\mathbb{G}/\!\mathscr{Z}(\mathbb{G})$, we characterize normal quantum subgroups of a compact quantum group as those left invariant by the action of the quantum group of inner automorphisms and discuss several examples.
The $2$-adic ring $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal{Q}_2$ naturally contains a copy of the Cuntz algebra $\mathcal{O}_2$ and, a fortiori, also of its diagonal subalgebra $\mathcal{D}_2$ with Cantor spectrum. This paper is aimed at studying the group ${\rm Aut}_{\mathcal{D}_2}(\mathcal{Q}_2)$ of the automorphisms of $\mathcal{Q}_2$ fixing $\mathcal{D}_2$ pointwise. It turns out that any such automorphism leaves $\mathcal{O}_2$ globally invariant. Furthermore, the subgroup ${\rm Aut}_{\mathcal{D}_2}(\mathcal{Q}_2)$ is shown to be maximal abelian in ${\rm Aut}(\mathcal{Q}_2)$. Saying exactly what the group…
