Spin Hall effect in metallic Pt is studied with first-principles relativistic band calculations. It is found that intrinsic spin Hall conductivity (SHC) is as large as $\sim 2000 (\hbar/e)(Ω{\rm cm})^{-1}$ at low temperature, and decreases down to $\sim 200 (\hbar/e)(Ω{\rm cm})^{-1}$ at room temperature. It is due to the resonant contribution from the spin-orbit splitting of the doubly degenerated $d$-bands at high-symmetry $L$ and $X$ points near the Fermi level. By modeling these near degeneracies by effective Hamiltonian, we show that SHC has a peak near the Fermi energy and that the vertex correction due to impurity scattering vanishes. We therefore argue that the large spin Hall effect observed experimentally in platinum is of intrinsic nature.
We show the first experimental observation of the platinum (Pt) thickness dependence in a hybrid YIG/Pt system of the inverse spin-Hall effect from spin pumping, over a large frequency range and for different rf powers. From the measurement of the dc voltage ($Δ\textrm{V}$) at the resonant condition and the resistance ($R$) of the Pt layer, a strong enhancement of the ratio $Δ\textrm{V}/R$ has been observed, which is not in agreement with previous studies on the NiFe/Pt system. The origin of this behaviour is still unclear and cannot be explained by the spin transport model that we have used.
We carried out a concerted effort to determine the absolute sign of the inverse spin Hall effect voltage generated by spin currents injected into a normal metal. We focus on yttrium iron garnet (YIG)|platinum bilayers at room temperature, generating spin currents by microwaves and temperature gradients. We find consistent results for different samples and measurement setups that agree with theory. We suggest a right-hand-rule to define a positive spin Hall angle corresponding to with the voltage expected for the simple case of scattering of free electrons from repulsive Coulomb charges.
Through combined ferromagnetic resonance, spin-pumping and inverse spin Hall effect experiments in Co|Pt bilayers and Co|Cu|Pt trilayers, we demonstrate consistent values of spin diffusion length $\ell_{\rm sf}^{\rm Pt}=3.4\pm0.4$ nm and of spin Hall angle $θ_{\rm SHE}^{\rm Pt}=0.051\pm0.004$ for Pt. Our data and model emphasize on the partial depolarization of the spin current at each interface due to spin-memory loss. Our model reconciles the previously published spin Hall angle values and explains the different scaling lengths for the ferromagnetic damping and the spin Hall effect induced v…
Electric gating can strongly modulate a wide variety of physical properties in semiconductors and insulators, such as significant changes of conductivity in silicon, appearance of superconductivity in SrTiO3, the paramagnet-ferromagnet transition in (In,Mn)As and so on. The key to such modulation is charge accumulation in solids. Thus, it has been believed that such modulation is out of reach for conventional metals where the number of carriers is too large. However, success in tuning the Curie temperature of ultrathin cobalt gave hope of finally achieving such degree of control even in metall…
The spin Hall effect (SHE) converts charge current to pure spin currents in orthogonal directions in materials that have significant spin-orbit coupling. The efficiency of the conversion is described by the spin Hall Angle (SHA). The SHA can most readily be inferred by using the generated spin currents to excite or rotate the magnetization of ferromagnetic films or nano-elements via spin-transfer torques. Some of the largest spin torque derived spin Hall angles (ST-SHA) have been reported in platinum. Here we show, using spin torque ferromagnetic resonance (ST-FMR) measurements, that the transpa…
The occurrence of Spin-Hall Magnetoresistance (SMR) in platinum (Pt) on top of yttrium iron garnet (YIG) has been investigated, for both in-plane and out-of-plane applied magnetic fields and for different Pt thicknesses [3, 4, 8 and 35nm]. Our experiments show that the SMR signal directly depends on the in-plane and out-of-plane magnetization directions of the YIG. This confirms the theoretical description, where the SMR occurs due to the interplay of spin-orbit interaction in the Pt and spin-mixing at the YIG/Pt interface. Additionally, the sensitivity of the SMR and spin pumping signals on t…
We study the temperature dependence of the spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) in yttrium iron garnet/platinum hybrid structures via magnetization orientation dependent magnetoresistance measurements. Our experiments show a decrease of the SMR magnitude with decreasing temperature. Using the sensitivity of the SMR to the spin transport properties of the normal metal, we interpret our data in terms of a decrease of the spin Hall angle in platinum from 0.11 at room temperature to 0.075 at 10K, while the spin diffusion length and the spin mixing conductance of the ferrimagnetic insulator/normal met…
The dependence of the spin pumping efficiency and the spin mixing conductance on the surface processing of yttrium iron garnet (YIG) before the platinum (Pt) deposition has been investigated quantitatively. The ferromagnetic resonance driven spin pumping injects a spin polarized current into the Pt layer, which is transformed into an electromotive force by the inverse spin Hall effect. Our experiments show that the spin pumping effect indeed strongly depends on the YIG/Pt interface condition. We measure an enhancement of the inverse spin Hall voltage and the spin mixing conductance of more tha…
We measure and analyze the effective spin Hall angle of platinum in the low residual resistivity regime by second harmonic measurements of the spin-orbit torques for a multilayer of Pt/Co/AlO$_x$. An angular dependent study of the torques allows us to extract the effective spin Hall angle responsible for the damping-like torque in the system. We observe a strikingly non-monotonic and reproducible temperature dependence of the torques. This behavior is compatible with recent theoretical predictions which include both intrinsic and extrinsic (impurities and phonons) contributions to the spin Hal…
We have demonstrated the electrical generation and detection of spin polarization by the spin Hall effect (SHE) in platinum. The experiment was performed in a non-local geometry without the use of ferromagnetic materials or magnetic field. We designed a circuit that uses the SHE to convert a charge current to a spin current, and the inverse SHE to convert the spin current back into a charge signal. The experiments were carried out for temperatures from 10 K up to 290 K. We extracted the spin Hall conductivity and spin diffusion length from the data with the aid of a spin diffusion model, and f…
We study the magnetoresistance of yttrium iron garnet/Pt heterostructures in which the Pt layer was grown via atomic layer deposition (ALD). Magnetotransport experiments in three orthogonal rotation planes reveal the hallmark features of spin Hall magnetoresistance. We estimate the spin transport parameters by comparing the magnitude of the magnetoresistance in samples with different Pt thicknesses. We compare the spin Hall angle and the spin diffusion length of the ALD Pt layers to the values reported for high-quality sputter-deposited Pt films. The spin diffusion length of 1.5nm agrees well …
The spin-Seebeck effect (SSE) in platinum (Pt) and tantalum (Ta) on yttrium iron garnet (YIG) has been investigated by both externally heating the sample (using an on-chip Pt heater on top of the device) as well as by current-induced heating. For SSE measurements, external heating is the most common method to obtain clear signals. Here we show that also by current-induced heating it is possible to directly observe the SSE, separate from the also present spin-Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) signal, by using a lock-in detection technique. Using this measurement technique, the presence of additional…
Hirsch (1999) proposed a mechanism and geometry for the observation of the spin-Hall effect. In this work, we present a novel realization of the Hirsch geometry in a platinum (Pt) nanostructure, which is an increasingly important material for spintronics applications. Measurements were made in a non-local geometry to avoid spurious effects. The measurements show the large spin Hall conductivity of Pt. The results are compared with gold (Au) and aluminum (Al). Possible theoretical explanations of our observations are briefly mentioned.
We report measurements of the spin torque efficiencies in perpendicularly-magnetized Pt/Co bilayers where the Pt resistivity $ρ_{Pt}$ is strongly dependent on thickness $t_{Pt}$ . The damping-like spin Hall torque efficiency per unit current density, $ξ^j_{DL}$ , varies significantly with $t_{Pt}$, exhibiting a peak value $ξ^j_{DL}=0.12$ at $t_{Pt} = 2.8 - 3.9$ nm. In contrast, $ξ^j_{DL}/ρ_{Pt}$ increases monotonically with $t_{Pt}$ and saturates for $t_{Pt} > 5$ nm, consistent with an intrinsic spin Hall effect mechanism, in which $ξ^j_{DL}$ is enhanced by an increase in $ρ_{Pt}$ . Assuming t…
Several different experimental techniques have been used in efforts to measure the spin Hall conductivity and the spin Hall angle in Pt samples at room temperature, with results that disagree by more than a factor of 20, with spin Hall conductivities from 2.4 x 10^4 to 5.1 x 10^5 [hbar/(2e)] (Ohm-m)^-1 and spin Hall angles from 0.0037 to 0.08. We review this work, and analyze possible reasons for the discrepancies. We explain that the smallest values for the spin Hall angle that have been reported, based on measurements of lateral permalloy/copper/platinum devices, are incorrect because the or…
Current-induced spin-orbit torques in Co$_2$FeAl/Pt ultrathin bilayers are studied using a magnetoresistive harmonic response technique, which distinguishes the dampinglike and fieldlike contributions. The presence of a temperature-dependent magnetic proximity effect is observed through the anomalous Hall and anisotropic magnetoresistances, which are enhanced at low temperatures for thin platinum thicknesses. The fieldlike torque efficiency decreases steadily as the temperature is lowered for all Pt thicknesses studied, which we propose is related to the influence of the magnetic proximity eff…
We experimentally investigate and quantitatively analyze the spin Hall magnetoresistance effect in ferromagnetic insulator/platinum and ferromagnetic insulator/nonferromagnetic metal/platinum hybrid structures. For the ferromagnetic insulator we use either yttrium iron garnet, nickel ferrite or magnetite and for the nonferromagnet copper or gold. The spin Hall magnetoresistance effect is theoretically ascribed to the combined action of spin Hall and inverse spin Hall effect in the platinum metal top layer. It therefore should characteristically depend upon the orientation of the magnetization …
Hanle magnetoresistance (HMR) is a type of magnetoresistance where interplay of the spin Hall effect, Hanle-type spin precession, and spin-dependent scattering at the top/bottom surfaces in a heavy metal controls the effect. In this study, we modulate HMR in ultrathin Pt by ionic gating, where the surface Rashba field created by a strong electric field at the interface between the ionic gate and Pt plays the dominant role in the modulation. This finding can facilitate investigations of gate-tunable, spin-related effects and fabrication of spin devices.
We systematically measured the DC voltage V_ISH induced by spin pumping together with the inverse spin Hall effect in ferromagnet/platinum bilayer films. In all our samples, comprising ferromagnetic 3d transition metals, Heusler compounds, ferrite spinel oxides, and magnetic semiconductors, V_ISH invariably has the same polarity. V_ISH furthermore scales with the magnetization precession cone angle with a universal prefactor, irrespective of the magnetic properties, the charge carrier transport mechanism or type. These findings quantitatively corroborate the present theoretical understanding o…
Central focus of spintronics is concentrated on generation of pure spin current and associated spin torque. Pure spin current can be generated by spin Hall effect in heavy metals by passing charge current. By spin Seebeck effect pure spin current can also be generated in ferromagnet. In this work we experimentally demonstrate that if heavy metals like Platinum with high spin orbit coupling carry heat current it can convert it into spin current due to relativistic spin orbit interaction. This conversion of heat current into spin current in non magnet is equivalent of thermally driven spin Hall …
We report a tunable spin mixing conductance, up to $\pm 22\%$, in a Y${}_{3}$Fe${}_{5}$O${}_{12}$/Platinum (YIG/Pt) bilayer. This control is achieved by applying a gate voltage with an ionic gate technique, which exhibits a gate-dependent ferromagnetic resonance line width. Furthermore, we observed a gate-dependent spin pumping and spin Hall angle in the Pt layer, which is also tunable up to $\pm$ 13.6\%. This work experimentally demonstrates spin current control through spin pumping and a gate voltage in a YIG/Pt bilayer, demonstrating the crucial role of the interfacial charge density for the…
Spin pumping by ferromagnetic resonance is one of the most common technique to determine spin hall angles, Edelstein lengths or spin diffusion lengths of a large variety of materials. In recent years, rising concerns have appeared regarding the interpretation of these experiments, underlining that the signal could arise purely from thermoelectric effects, rather than from coherent spin pumping. Here, we propose a method to evaluate the presence or absence of thermal effects in spin pumping signals, by combining bolometry and spin pumping by ferromagnetic resonance measurements, and comparing t…
The spin Hall effect in a heavy metal thin film allows to probe the magnetic properties of an adjacent magnetic insulator via magnetotransport measurements. Here, we investigate the magnetoresistive response of yttrium iron garnet/platinum heterostructures from room temperature to beyond the Curie temperature $T_\mathrm{C, YIG} \approx 560\,\mathrm{K}$ of the ferrimagnetic insulator. We find that the amplitude of the (local) spin Hall magnetoresistance decreases monotonically from $300\,\mathrm{K}$ towards $T_\mathrm{C}$, mimicking the evolution of the saturation magnetization of yttrium iron …
Spin-Orbit Torque (SOT) Magnetic Random-Access Memories (MRAM) have shown promising results towards the realization of fast, non-volatile memory systems. Oxidation of the heavy-metal (HM) layer of the SOT-MRAM has been proposed as a method to increase its energy efficiency. But the results are widely divergent due to the difficulty in controlling the HM oxidation because of its low enthalpy of formation. Here, we reconcile these differences by performing a gradual oxidation procedure, which allows correlating the chemical structure to the physical properties of the stack. As an HM layer, we ch…

Spin-transfer torque and spin Hall effects combined with their reciprocal phenomena, spin-pumping and inverse spin Hall (ISHE) effects, enable the reading and control of magnetic moments in spintronics. The direct observation of these effects remains elusive in antiferromagnetic-based devices. We report sub-terahertz spin-pumping at the interface of a uniaxial insulating antiferromagnet MnF2 and platinum. The measured ISHE voltage arising from spin-charge conversion in the platinum layer depends on the chirality of the dynamical modes of the antiferromagnet, which is selectively excited and mo…
We measure the low-frequency thermal fluctuations of pure spin current in a Platinum film deposited on yttrium iron garnet via the inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE)-mediated voltage noise as a function of the angle $α$ between the magnetization and the transport direction. The results are consistent with the fluctuation dissipation theorem in terms of the recently discovered spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR). We present a microscopic description of the $α$ dependence of the voltage noise in terms of spin current fluctuations and ISHE.
Iridium is a very promising material for spintronic applications due to its interesting magnetic properties such as large RKKY exchange coupling as well as its large spin-orbit coupling value. Ir is for instance used as a spacer layer for perpendicular synthetic antiferromagnetic or ferrimagnet systems. However, only a few studies of the spintronic parameters of this material have been reported. In this paper, we present inverse spin Hall effect - spin pumping ferromagnetic resonance measurements on CoFeB/Ir based bilayers to estimate the values of the effective spin Hall angle, the spin diffu…
We study the magnon spin transport in the magnetic insulator yttrium iron garnet (YIG) in a nonlocal experiment and compare the magnon spin excitation and detection for the heavy metal paramagnetic electrodes platinum (Pt|YIG|Pt) and tantalum (Ta|YIG|Ta). The electrical injection and detection processes rely on the (inverse) spin Hall effect in the heavy metals and the conversion between the electron spin and magnon spin at the heavy metal|YIG interface. Pt and Ta possess opposite signs of the spin Hall angle. Furthermore, their heterostructures with YIG have different interface properties, i.…
We measure the ordinary and the anomalous Hall effect in a set of yttrium iron garnet$|$platinum (YIG$|$Pt) bilayers via magnetization orientation dependent magnetoresistance experiments. Our data show that the presence of the ferrimagnetic insulator YIG leads to an anomalous Hall like signature in Pt, sensitive to both Pt thickness and temperature. Interpretation of the experimental findings in terms of the spin Hall anomalous Hall effect indicates that the imaginary part of the spin mixing interface conductance $G_{\mathrm{i}}$ plays a crucial role in YIG$|$Pt bilayers. In particular, our da…
We report on the deformation of microwave absorption spectra and of the inverse spin Hall voltage signals in thin film bilayers of yttrium iron garnet (YIG) and platinum at high microwave power levels in a 9.45-GHz TE011 cavity. As the microwave power increases from 0.15 to 200 mW, the resonance field shifts to higher values, and the initially Lorentzian spectra of the microwave absorption intensity as well as the inverse spin Hall voltage signals become asymmetric. The contributions from opening of the magnetization precession cone and heating of YIG cannot well reproduce the data. Control me…
An important goal of spintronics is to covert a charge current into a spin current with a controlled spin polarization that can exert torques on an adjacent magnetic layer. Here we demonstrate such torques in a two ferromagnet system. A CoNi multilayer is used as a spin current source in a sample with structure CoNi/Au/CoFeB. Spin torque ferromagnetic resonance is used to measure the torque on the CoFeB layer. The response as a function of the applied field angle and current is consistent with the symmetry expected for a torques produced by the planar Hall effect originating in CoNi. We find t…
The ZrSiS-type compounds are Dirac semimetals and have been attracting considerable interest in recent years due to their topological electronic properties and possible applications. In particular, gapped Dirac nodes can possess large spin Berry curvatures and thus give rise to large spin Hall effect (SHE) and spin Nernst effect (SNE), which may be used to generate pure spin current for spintronics and spin caloritronics without applied magnetic field or magnetic material. In this paper we study both SHE and SNE in ZrXY (X = Si, Ge; Y = S, Se, Te) based on \textit{ab initio} relativistic band …
Efficient generation of spin-orbit torques (SOTs) is central for the exciting field of spin-orbitronics. Platinum, the archetypal spin Hall material, has the potential to be an outstanding provider for spin-orbit torques due to its giant spin Hall conductivity, low resistivity, high stabilities, and the ability to be compatible with CMOS circuits. However, pure clean-limit Pt with low resistivity still provides a low damping-like spin-orbit torque efficiency, which limits its practical applications. The efficiency of spin-orbit torque in Pt-based magnetic heterostructures can be improved consi…
We report on the determination of the anomalous spin Hall angle in the ferromagnetic metal alloy cobalt-iron (Co$_{25}$Fe$_{75}$, CoFe). This is accomplished by measuring the spin injection/detection efficiency in a multiterminal device with nanowires of platinum (Pt) and CoFe deposited onto the magnetic insulator yttrium iron garnet (Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$, YIG). Applying a spin-resistor model to our multiterminal spin transport data, we determine the magnon conductivity in YIG, the spin conductance at the YIG/CoFe interface and finally the anomalous spin Hall angle of CoFe as a function of its …
Spin pumping in ferromagnets provides a source of pure spin currents. Via the inverse spin Hall effect a spin current is converted into a charge current and a corresponding detectable DC-voltage. The ratio of injected spin current to resulting charge current is given by the spin Hall angle. However, the number of experiments more or less equals the number of different values for spin Hall angles, even for the most studied normal metal platinum. This publication provides a full study of inverse spin Hall effect and anisotropic magnetoresistance for different NiFe(Py) / normal metal bilayers usi…
This paper micromagnetically studies the magnetization dynamics driven by the spin-Hall effect in a Platinum/Permalloy bi-layer. For a certain field and current range, the excitation of a uniform mode, characterized by a power with a spatial distribution in the whole ferromagnetic cross section, is observed. We suggest to use the ferromagnet of the bi-layer as basis for the realization of an array of spin-torque oscillators (STOs): the Permalloy ferromagnet will act as shared free layer, whereas the spacers and the polarizers are built on top of it. Following this strategy, the frequency of th…
The anomalous Hall effect is investigated experimentally and theoretically for ferromagnetic thin films of Mn$_5$Ge$_3$. We have separated the intrinsic and extrinsic contributions to the experimental anomalous Hall effect, and calculated the intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity from the Berry curvature of the Bloch states using first-principles methods. The intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity depends linearly on the magnetization, which can be understood from the long wavelength fluctuations of the spin orientation at finite temperatures. The quantitative agreement between theory and exper…
Relativistic band theoretical calculations reveal that intrinsic spin Hall conductivity in hole-doped archetypical semiconductors Ge, GaAs and AlAs is large $[\sim 100 (\hbar/e)(Ωcm)^{-1}]$, showing the possibility of spin Hall effect beyond the four band Luttinger Hamiltonian. The calculated orbital-angular-momentum (orbital) Hall conductivity is one order of magnitude smaller, indicating no cancellation between the spin and orbital Hall effects in bulk semiconductors. Furthermore, it is found that the spin Hall effect can be strongly manipulated by strains, and that the $ac$ spin Hall conduc…
The spin Hall angle in Pt is evaluated in Pt/NiFe bilayers by spin torque ferromagnetic resonance (ST-FMR) measurements, and is found to increase with increasing the NiFe thickness. To extract the intrinsic spin Hall angle in Pt by estimating the total spin current injected into NiFe from Pt, the NiFe thickness dependent measurements are performed and the spin diffusion in the NiFe layer is taken into account. The intrinsic spin Hall angle of Pt is determined to be 0.068 at room temperature, and is found to be almost constant in the temperature range 13 - 300 K.
We propose a mechanism of intrinsic spin Hall effect (SHE). In this mechanism, local orbital angular momentum (OAM) induces electron position shift and couples with the bias electric field to generate orbital Hall effect (OHE). SHE then emerges as a concomitant effect of OHE through the atomic spin-orbit coupling. Spin Hall conductivity due to this mechanism is estimated to be comparable to experimental values for heavy metals. This mechanism predicts the sign change of the spin Hall conductivity as the spin-orbit polarization changes its sign, and also correlation between the spin Hall conduc…
We study the dependence of the intrinsic spin Hall effect on the crystal symmetry and geometry of experiment. The spin current is obtained and the Hall voltage caused by the polarization of the electron spins is computed. The unique dependence of the effect on the crystal symmetry permits the choice of geometry in which the spin Hall effect can be unambiguously distinguished from the effects due to the orbital motion of charge carriers and due to the magnetic field generated by the transport current.
Detecting the orientation of the Néel vector is a major research topic in antiferromagnetic spintronics. Here we recognize the intrinsic nonlinear Hall effect, which is independent of the relaxation time, as a prominent contribution to the time-reversal-odd second order conductivity and can be used to detect the flipping of the Néel vector. In contrast, the Berry-curvature-dipole-induced nonlinear Hall effect depends linear on relaxation time and is time-reversal-even. We study the intrinsic nonlinear Hall effect in an antiferromagnetic metal: tetragonal CuMnAs, and show that its nonlinear Hal…
We present a method to compute the intrinsic spin Hall conductivity from first principles using an interpolation scheme based on maximally-localized Wannier functions. After obtaining the relevant matrix elements among the ab initio Bloch states calculated on a coarse k-point mesh, we Fourier transform them to find the corresponding matrix elements between Wannier states. We then perform an inverse Fourier transform to interpolate the velocity and spin-current matrix elements onto a dense k-point mesh, and use them to evaluate the spin Hall conductivity as a Brillouin-zone integral. This strat…
Exploration of spin-currents in organic semiconductors (OSECs) induced by resonant microwave absorption in ferromagnetic substrates has been of great interest for potential spintronics applications. Due to the inherently weak spin-orbit coupling (SOC) of OSECs, their inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE) response is very subtle; limited by the microwave power applicable under continuous-wave (cw) excitation. Here we introduce a novel approach for generating significant ISHE signals using pulsed ferromagnetic resonance, where the ISHE is ~2-3 orders of magnitude larger compared to cw excitation. This…
The intrinsic anomalous Hall effect is one of the most exciting manifestations of the geometric properties of the electronic wave-function. Here, we predict that the electronic wave-function's geometric nature also gives rise to a purely quantum mechanical, {\it intrinsic} (scattering time-independent) component of the Hall conductivities in the presence of a magnetic field. We show that the orbital magnetic moment and the anomalous Hall velocity combine to generate a scattering time-independent contribution to the Hall effect, in addition to the Lorentz force induced scattering time-dependent…
We consider spin Hall effect in a system of massless Dirac fermions in a graphene lattice. Two types of spin-orbit interaction, pertinent to the graphene lattice, are taken into account - the intrinsic and Rashba terms. Assuming perfect crystal lattice, we calculate the topological contribution to spin Hall conductivity. When both interactions are present, their interplay is shown to lead to some peculiarities in the dependence of spin Hall conductivity on the Fermi level.
Anomalous Hall-like signals in platinum in contact with magnetic insulators are common observations that could be explained by either proximity magnetization or spin Hall magnetoresistance. In this work, longitudinal and transverse magnetoresistances are measured in a pure gold thin film on the ferrimagnetic insulator Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ (Yttrium Iron Garnet, YIG). We show that both the longitudinal and transverse magnetoresistances have quantitatively consistent scaling in YIG/Au and in a YIG/Pt reference system when applying the Spin Hall magnetoresistance framework. No contribution of an an…
We report a novel spin injection and detection mechanism via the anomalous Hall effect in a ferromagnetic metal. The anomalous spin Hall effect (ASHE) refers to the transverse spin current generated within the ferromagnet. We utilize the ASHE and its reciprocal effect to electrically inject and detect magnons in a magnetic insulator in a non-local geometry. Our experiments reveal that permalloy can have a higher spin injection and detection efficiency to that of platinum, owing to the ASHE. We also demonstrate the tunability of the ASHE via the orientation of the permalloy magnetization, thus …
In a kagome lattice, the time reversal symmetry can be broken by a staggered magnetic flux emerging from ferromagnetic ordering and intrinsic spin-orbit coupling, leading to several wellseparated nontrivial Chern bands and intrinsic quantum anomalous Hall effect. Based on this idea and ab initio calculations, we propose the realization of the intrinsic quantum anomalous Hall effect in the single layer Cs2Mn3F12 kagome lattice and on the (001) surface of a Cs2LiMn3F12 single crystal by modifying the carrier coverage on it, where the band gap is around 20 meV. Moreover, a simplified tight bindin…
An oscillographic study of the Hall voltage with an unpolarized alternating current through a platinum sample revealed choral features of the Hall effect, which clearly demonstrate the presence of the spin Hall effect in metals with a noticeable spin-orbit interaction. It was confirmed that, as in the case of direct current, the possibility of a spin-Hall effect is associated with the presence of an imbalance of the spins and charges at the edges of the samples, which is realized using their asymmetric geometry. In particular, it was found that such chiral features of the nonequilibrium spin-H…
We report observation of intrinsic inverse spin Hall effect in un-doped GaAs multiple quantum wells with a sample temperature of 10 K. A transient ballistic pure spin current is injected by a pair of laser pulses through quantum interference. By time-resolving the dynamics of the pure spin current, the momentum relaxation time is deduced, which sets the lower limit of the scattering time between electrons and holes. The transverse charge current generated by the pure spin current via the inverse spin Hall effect is simultaneously resolved. We find that the charge current is generated well befo…
First-principles calculations are applied to study spin Hall effect in semiconductors and simple metals. We found that intrinsic spin Hall conductivity (ISHC) in realistic materials shows rich sign changes, which may be used to distinguish the effect from the extrinsic one. The calculated ISHC in n-doped GaAs can be well compared with experiment, and it differs from the sign obtained from the extrinsic effect. On the other hand, the ISHC in W and Au, which shows opposite sign respectively, is robust and not sensitive to the disorder.
We describe a new effect in semiconductor spintronics that leads to dissipationless spin-currents in paramagnetic spin-orbit coupled systems. We argue that in a high mobility two-dimensional electron system with substantial Rashba spin-orbit coupling, a spin-current that flows perpendicular to the charge current is intrinsic. In the usual case where both spin-orbit split bands are occupied, the spin-Hall conductivity has a universal value.
Valley-related multiple Hall effect in 2D lattice is a fundamental transport phenomenon in the fields of condensed-matter physics and material science. So far, most proposals for its realization are limited to toy models or extrinsic effects. Here, based on tight-binding model and first-principles calculations, we report the discovery of intrinsic valley-related multiple Hall effect in 2D organometallic lattice of NbTa-benzene. Protected by the breaking of both time-reversal and inversion symmetry, NbTa-benzene exhibits large valley polarization spontaneously in both the conduction and valence…
Response properties that are purely intrinsic to physical systems are of paramount importance in physics research, as they probe fundamental properties of band structures and allow quantitative calculation and comparison with experiment. For anomalous Hall transport in magnets, an intrinsic effect can appear at the second order to the applied electric field. We show that this intrinsic second-order anomalous Hall effect is associated with an intrinsic band geometric property -- the dipole moment of Berry-connection polarizability (BCP) in momentum space. The effect has scaling relation and sym…
We have studied the spin transport and the spin Hall effect as a function of temperature for platinum (Pt) and gold (Au) in lateral spin valve structures. First, by using the spin absorption technique, we extract the spin diffusion length of Pt and Au. Secondly, using the same devices, we have measured the spin Hall conductivity and analyzed its evolution with temperature to identify the dominant scattering mechanisms behind the spin Hall effect. This analysis confirms that the intrinsic mechanism dominates in Pt whereas extrinsic effects are more relevant in Au. Moreover, we identify and quan…
Since their discovery, topological insulators have been expected to be ideal spintronic materials owing to the spin currents carried by surface states with spin--momentum locking. However, the bulk doping problem remains an obstacle that hinders such application. In this work, we predict that a newly discovered family of topological materials, the Weyl semimetals, exhibits large intrinsic spin Hall effects that can be utilized to generate and detect spin currents. Our $ab~initio$ calculations reveal a large spin Hall conductivity that is comparable to that of $4d$ and $5d$ transition metals. T…
