The intrinsic anomalous Hall effect is one of the most exciting manifestations of the geometric properties of the electronic wave-function. Here, we predict that the electronic wave-function's geometric nature also gives rise to a purely quantum mechanical, {\it intrinsic} (scattering time-independent) component of the Hall conductivities in the presence of a magnetic field. We show that the orbital magnetic moment and the anomalous Hall velocity combine to generate a scattering time-independent contribution to the Hall effect, in addition to the Lorentz force induced scattering time-dependent `classical' Hall effect. This dissipation-less Hall effect also manifests in the thermo-electric and thermal conductivities and is dominant near the band edges and band-crossings. It gives rise to negative magneto-resistance and it also leads to an underestimation in the charge carrier density measured in Hall experiments.
We present a method to compute the intrinsic spin Hall conductivity from first principles using an interpolation scheme based on maximally-localized Wannier functions. After obtaining the relevant matrix elements among the ab initio Bloch states calculated on a coarse k-point mesh, we Fourier transform them to find the corresponding matrix elements between Wannier states. We then perform an inverse Fourier transform to interpolate the velocity and spin-current matrix elements onto a dense k-point mesh, and use them to evaluate the spin Hall conductivity as a Brillouin-zone integral. This strat…
Intrinsic spin Hall conductivities are calculated for strong spin-orbit Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_x$ semimetals, from the Kubo formula and using Berry curvatures evaluated throughout the Brillouin zone from a tight-binding Hamiltonian. Nearly-crossing bands with strong spin-orbit interaction generate giant spin Hall conductivities in these materials, ranging from 474 ($\hbar$/e)($Ω$cm)$^{-1}$ for bismuth to 96 ($\hbar$/e)($Ω$cm)$^{-1}$ for antimony; the value for bismuth is more than twice that of platinum. The large spin Hall conductivities persist for alloy compositions corresponding to a three-dimensio…
Characterized by zigzag and armchair boundaries, the narrow ribbons display the very different characteristics in Hall conductivities. It is shown that the multi-band-crossings occur in the energy spectrum for armchair ribbons, and the number of them depends on the width of ribbons. Theoretically, it is predicated that the conductivities exhibit drastic sign reversals for narrow ribbons as the Fermi energy sweep over the band-crossings. A new classification of armchair ribbons is suggested based on the emergence of a flat band in the energy spectrum only for odd armchair ribbons. The evolution…
The quantum Hall effect in a 2D electron system expresses a topological invariant, leading to a quantized conductivity. The thermal Hall and thermoelectric Nernst conductances in two dimensions are also reported to be quantized in specific systems. However, a comprehensive study of these quantities within one formalism for quantum Hall systems is so far elusive. In this work, we investigate the Hall, thermal Hall, and Nernst effects analytically and numerically in 2D and 3D. In addition to the quantized values for the Hall and thermal Hall conductances in two dimensions, we also find quasi-qua…
In this paper, we study topological properties and Hall conductivities in PbC/MnSe heterostructure under the illumination of a circularly polarized light. At high frequency regime, energy gap, Chern numbers, and Hall conductivities are studied based on the Floquet theory and Green's function formalism, respectively. The interplay between spin orbit coupling and light leads to topological phase transition between anomalous Hall states and spin Hall states, which is related to the emission and absorption of two virtual photons. The anomalous Hall conductivities are dependent on polarization of l…
Broken Galilean invariance in a spin-orbit coupled system can amplify many-body effects on its different responses. We study the anomalous Hall and spin Hall conductivities of a magnetic two-dimensional electron gas with Rashba spin-orbit coupling. We show that both of these conductivities in the intrinsic limit are fully specified in terms of the longitudinal and transverse spin-spin response functions. We include the effect of electron-electron interaction in the spin-spin linear response functions, going beyond the random-phase approximation. We do this by incorporating the local-field corr…
The analytical expressions for both diagonal and off-diagonal ac and dc conductivities of graphene placed in an external magnetic field are derived. These conductivities exhibit rather unusual behavior as functions of frequency, chemical potential and applied field which is caused by the fact that the quasiparticle excitations in graphene are Dirac-like. One of the most striking effects observed in graphene is the odd integer quantum Hall effect. We argue that it is caused by the anomalous properties of the Dirac quasiparticles from the lowest Landau level. Other quantities such as Hall angle …
The direct-current (dc) $σ_{xx}^{dc}$ and alternating-current (ac) $σ_{xx}^{ac}=σ_1-iσ_2$ conductivities of a wide (46 nm) GaAs quantum well with the bilayer electron density distribution are measured. It is found that the magnetic field dependence of $σ_{xx}$ exhibits three sets of oscillations related to the transitions between Landau levels in symmetric and antisymmetric subbands and with the transitions occurring owing to the Zeeman splitting of these subbands. The analysis of the frequency dependence of the ac conductivity and the $σ_1 / σ_2$ ratio demonstrates that the conductivity at th…
The experimental availability of ultra-high-mobility samples of graphene opens the possibility to realize and study experimentally the "hydrodynamic" regime of the electron liquid. In this regime the rate of electron-electron collisions is extremely high and dominates over the electron-impurity and electron-phonon scattering rates, which are therefore neglected. The system is brought to a local quasi-equilibrium described by a set of smoothly varying (in space and time) functions, {\it i.e.} the density, the velocity field and the local temperature. In this paper we calculate the charge and sp…
Considering finite-temperature screened electron-impurity scattering, we present a kinetic equation approach to investigate transport properties of two-dimensional massive fermions in silicene. We find that the longitudinal conductivity is always nonvanishing when chemical potential lies within the energy gap. This residual conductivity arises from interband correlation and strongly depends on strength of electron-impurity scattering. We also clarify that the electron-impurity interaction makes substantial contributions to the spin- and valley-Hall conductivities, which, however, are almost in…
We propose an approach based on the generalized quantum mechanics to deal with the basic features of the spin Hall effect. We begin by considering two decoupled harmonic oscillators on the noncommutative plane and determine the solutions of the energy spectrum. We realize two algebras in terms of the quadratic observables and show their importance in filling the shells with fermions. Under some transformation we show that our system is submitted to an effective Lorentz force similar to that acting on one particle in an external magnetic field. From equation of motions, we end up with the charg…
We study interlayer transport of multilayer graphenes in magnetic field with various stacking structures (AB, ABC, and AA types) by calculating the Hall and longitudinal conductivities as functions of Fermi energy. Their behavior depends strongly on the stacking structures and selection of the layers. The Hall conductivity between different layers is no longer quantized. Moreover, for AB stacking, the interlayer conductivity vanishes around zero energy with increasing layer separation, and shows negative values in particular cases. The fact that longitudinal interlayer conductivity suppressed …
We obtain a ``mean field'' scaling flow of the longitudinal and the Hall conductivities in the fractional quantum Hall regime. Using the composite fermion picture and assuming that the composite fermions follow the Khmelnitskii-Pruisken scaling flow for the integer quantum Hall effect, the unstable fixed points which govern the transitions between different fractional quantum Hall states are identified. Distributions of the critical longitudinal and Hall conductivities at the unstable fixed points are obtained and implications of the results for the experiments on mesoscopic quantum Hall syste…
Using the Matsubara Green function formalism we calculate the temperature dependence of spin Hall and spin Nernst conductivities of a two-dimensional electron gas with Rashba spin-orbit interaction in the linear response regime. In the case of spin Nernst effect we also include the contribution from spin-resolved orbital magnetization, which assures correct behavior of the spin Nernst conductivity in the zero-temperature limit. Analytical formulas for the spin Hall and spin Nernst conductivities are derived in some specific situations. Using the Ioffe-Regel localization criterion, we have also…
We investigate the relation between the diagonal ($σ_{xx}$) and off-diagonal ($σ_{xy}$) components of the conductivity tensor in the quantum Hall system. We calculate the conductivity components for a short-range impurity potential using the linear response theory, employing an approximation that simply replaces the self-energy by a constant value $-i \hbar /(2 τ)$ with $τ$ the scattering time. The approximation is equivalent to assuming that the broadening of a Landau level due to disorder is represented by a Lorentzian with the width $Γ= \hbar /(2 τ)$. Analytic formulas are obtained for both…
We construct a family of holomorphic $β$-functions whose RG flow preserves the $Γ(2)$ modular symmetry and reproduces the observed stability of the Hall plateaus. The semi-circle law relating the longitudinal and Hall conductivities that has been observed experimentally is obtained from the integration of the RG equations for any permitted transition which can be identified from the selection rules encoded in the flow diagram. The generic scale dependance of the conductivities is found to agree qualitatively with the present experimental data. The existence of a crossing point occuring in the …
We perform a first principles calculation of the anomalous Hall effect in ferromagnetic bcc Fe. Our theory identifies an intrinsic contribution to the anomalous Hall conductivity and relates it to the k-space Berry phase of occupied Bloch states. The theory is able to account for both dc and magneto-optical Hall conductivities with no adjustable parameters.
We consider intrinsic contributions to the spin Hall and spin Nernst effects in a bilayer graphene. The relevant electronic spectrum is obtained from the tight binding Hamiltonian, which also includes the intrinsic spin-orbit interaction. The corresponding spin Hall and spin Nernst conductivities are compared with those obtained from effective Hamiltonians appropriate for states in the vicinity of the Fermi level of a neutral bilayer graphene. Both conductivities are determined within the linear response theory and Green function formalism. The influence of an external voltage between the two …
Spin, anomalous, and valley Hall effects in graphene-based hybrid structures are studied theoretically within the Green function formalism and linear response theory. Two different types of hybrid systems are considered in detail: (i) graphene/boron nitride/cobalt(nickel), and (ii) graphene/YIG. The main interest is focused on the proximity-induced exchange interaction between graphene and magnetic substrate and on the proximity-enhanced spin-orbit coupling. The proximity effects are shown to have a significant influence on the electronic and spin transport properties of graphene. To find the …
We point out the existence of finite charge and spin Hall conductivities of graphene in the presence of a spin orbit interaction (SOI) and localized magnetic impurities. The SOI in graphene results in different transverse forces on the two spin channels yielding the spin Hall current. The magnetic scatterers act as spin-dependent barriers, and in combination with the SOI effect lead to a charge imbalance at the boundaries. As indicated here, the charge and spin Hall effects should be observable in graphene by changing the chemical potential close to the gap.
We present experimental results on the quantized Hall insulator in two dimensions. This insulator, with vanishing conductivities, is characterized by the quantization (within experimental accuracy) of the Hall resistance in units of the quantum unit of resistance, h/e^2. The measurements were performed in a two dimensional hole system, confined in a Ge/SiGe quantum well, when the magnetic field is increased above the nu=1 quantum Hall state. This quantization leads to a nearly perfect semi-circle relation for the diagonal and Hall conductivities. Similar results are obtained with a higher mobi…
The DC and AC conductivities of the n-GaAs/AlAs heterostructure with two filled size quantization levels are studied within a wide magnetic field range. The electron spectrum of such heterostructure is characterized by two subbands (symmetric $S$ and antisymmetric $AS$), separated by the band gap $Δ_{12}=15.5$ meV. It is shown that, in the linear regime at the applied magnetic field $B >3$ T, the system exhibits oscillations corresponding to the integer quantum Hall effect. A quite complicated pattern of such oscillations is well interpreted in terms of transitions between Landau levels relate…
This thesis predicts that two types of material families could be a solution to the challenges in spintronics: complex oxides and bismuth based materials. We derive a general approach for constructing an effective spin-orbit Hamiltonian, which applies to all nonmagnetic materials. We also verify this formalism through comparisons with other approaches for III-V semiconductors. Its general applicability is illustrated by deriving the spin-orbit interaction and predicting spin lifetimes for strained SrTiO$_3$ and a two-dimensional electron gas (such as at the LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface). Our …
Spin transport properties of a coupled bilayer electron gas with Rashba spin-orbit coupling are studied. The definition of the spin currents in each layer as well as the corresponding continuity-like equations in the bilayer system are given. The curves of the spin Hall conductivities obtained in each layer exhibit sharp cusps around a particular value of the tunnelling strength and the conductivities undergo sign changes across this point. Our investigation on the impurity effect manifests that an arbitrarily small concentration of nonmagnetic impurities does not suppress the spin Hall conduc…
In an earlier work, Damle and the author (Phys. Rev. B in press; cond-mat/9705206) demonstrated the central role played by incoherent, inelastic processes in transport near two-dimensional quantum critical points. This paper extends these results to the case of a quantum transition in an anyon gas between a fractional quantized Hall state and an insulator, induced by varying the strength of an external periodic potential. We use the quantum field theory for this transition introduced by Chen, Fisher and Wu (Phys. Rev. B 48, 13749 (1993)). The longitudinal and Hall conductivities at the critica…
The quantum Hall effects in the sliding bilayer graphene and AAB-stacked trilayer system are investigated by the Kubo formula and the generalized tight-binding model. The various stacking configurations can greatly diversify the magnetic quantization and thus create the rich and unique transport properties. The quantum conductivities are very sensitive to the Fermi energy and magnetic-field strength. The diverse features cover the specific non-integer conductivities, the integer conductivities with the distinct steps, the splitting-created reduction and complexity of quantum conductivity, a va…
We study plasmon propagation on a metallic two-dimensional surface partially coated with a thin film of anomalous-Hall material. The resulting three regions, separated by two sharp interfaces, are characterised by different Hall conductivities but identical normal conductivities. A single bound mode is found, which can localise to either interface and has an asymmetric potential profile across the region. For propagating modes, we calculate the reflection and transmission coefficients through the magnetic region. We find Airy transmission patterns with sharp maxima and minima as a function of …
The anomalous Hall effect is investigated experimentally and theoretically for ferromagnetic thin films of Mn$_5$Ge$_3$. We have separated the intrinsic and extrinsic contributions to the experimental anomalous Hall effect, and calculated the intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity from the Berry curvature of the Bloch states using first-principles methods. The intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity depends linearly on the magnetization, which can be understood from the long wavelength fluctuations of the spin orientation at finite temperatures. The quantitative agreement between theory and exper…
Relativistic band theoretical calculations reveal that intrinsic spin Hall conductivity in hole-doped archetypical semiconductors Ge, GaAs and AlAs is large $[\sim 100 (\hbar/e)(Ωcm)^{-1}]$, showing the possibility of spin Hall effect beyond the four band Luttinger Hamiltonian. The calculated orbital-angular-momentum (orbital) Hall conductivity is one order of magnitude smaller, indicating no cancellation between the spin and orbital Hall effects in bulk semiconductors. Furthermore, it is found that the spin Hall effect can be strongly manipulated by strains, and that the $ac$ spin Hall conduc…
The spin Hall angle in Pt is evaluated in Pt/NiFe bilayers by spin torque ferromagnetic resonance (ST-FMR) measurements, and is found to increase with increasing the NiFe thickness. To extract the intrinsic spin Hall angle in Pt by estimating the total spin current injected into NiFe from Pt, the NiFe thickness dependent measurements are performed and the spin diffusion in the NiFe layer is taken into account. The intrinsic spin Hall angle of Pt is determined to be 0.068 at room temperature, and is found to be almost constant in the temperature range 13 - 300 K.
We propose a mechanism of intrinsic spin Hall effect (SHE). In this mechanism, local orbital angular momentum (OAM) induces electron position shift and couples with the bias electric field to generate orbital Hall effect (OHE). SHE then emerges as a concomitant effect of OHE through the atomic spin-orbit coupling. Spin Hall conductivity due to this mechanism is estimated to be comparable to experimental values for heavy metals. This mechanism predicts the sign change of the spin Hall conductivity as the spin-orbit polarization changes its sign, and also correlation between the spin Hall conduc…
We study the dependence of the intrinsic spin Hall effect on the crystal symmetry and geometry of experiment. The spin current is obtained and the Hall voltage caused by the polarization of the electron spins is computed. The unique dependence of the effect on the crystal symmetry permits the choice of geometry in which the spin Hall effect can be unambiguously distinguished from the effects due to the orbital motion of charge carriers and due to the magnetic field generated by the transport current.
In this Letter, we study the magnetic transport in AA-stacked bilayer honeycomb chiral magnets coupled either ferromagnetically or antiferromagnetically. For both couplings, we observe chirality-induced gaps, chiral protected edge states, magnon Hall and magnon spin Nernst effects of magnetic spin excitations. For ferromagnetically coupled layers, thermal Hall and spin Nernst conductivities do not change sign as function of magnetic field or temperature similar to single-layer honeycomb ferromagnetic insulator. In contrast, for antiferromagnetically coupled layers, we observe a sign change in …
Detecting the orientation of the Néel vector is a major research topic in antiferromagnetic spintronics. Here we recognize the intrinsic nonlinear Hall effect, which is independent of the relaxation time, as a prominent contribution to the time-reversal-odd second order conductivity and can be used to detect the flipping of the Néel vector. In contrast, the Berry-curvature-dipole-induced nonlinear Hall effect depends linear on relaxation time and is time-reversal-even. We study the intrinsic nonlinear Hall effect in an antiferromagnetic metal: tetragonal CuMnAs, and show that its nonlinear Hal…
We present the results of the calculations of longitudinal and Hall conductivities of AB-stacked bilayer graphene as a function of frequency, finite chemical potential, temperature both with and without magnetic fields on a base of 2- and 4-band effective models. The limited cases of the conductivities for direct current are derived. The relations being important for optoelectronic among Hall conductivities and Faraday, Kerr angles in the AB-bilayers samples in the electric and magnetic fields when the radiation passes across bilayer sheets on different kinds a substrate are obtained.
Surface electron currents are studied for the integer quantum Hall effect in three dimensions(3D) proposed previously by Kohmoto et al. and by Koshino et al. We predict the current wraps the facets of the sample with its intensity and direction dictated by 3D Chern numbers which are just the quantized Hall conductivities in 3D ($σ_{xy}, σ_{zx}$), so a natural connection exists between the surface and bulk currents just as in 2D. An experiment to detect the 3D integer quantum Hall effect through the wrapping current is proposed.
The status of the ac quantum Hall effect is reviewed with emphasis on the theoretical development in recent years. In particular, the numerical approaches for the calculation of the frequency dependent Hall and longitudinal conductivities of non-interacting electrons are considered in detail. Results for the frequency scaling at the critical point and for the frequency dependent deviation of the Hall conductivity from the quantised plateau value are presented.
Recent experimental observations of unexpectedly large thermal Hall conductivities, $κ_H$, in insulating materials, including the parent compounds of the high temperature superconducting cuprates, likely reflect an extrinsic contribution from a yet to be identified extrinsic source of skew scattering of acoustic phonons. We show that resonant scattering of phonons from a certain class of three-level systems produces strong skew scattering in the presence of a modest magnetic field. We interpret this as a first step towards understanding the experiments.
In this paper we critically reconsider the Casimir repulsion between surfaces that carry the Chern-Simons interaction (corresponding to the Hall type conductivity). We present a derivation of the Lifshitz formula valid for arbitrary planar geometries and discuss its properties. This analysis allows us to resolve some contradictions in the previous literature. We compute the Casimir energy for two surfaces that have constant longitudinal and Hall conductivities. The repulsion is possible only if both surfaces have Hall conductivities of the same sign. However, there is a critical value of the l…
We have investigated spin Hall effects in 4$d$ and 5$d$ transition metals, Nb, Ta, Mo, Pd and Pt, by incorporating the spin absorption method in the lateral spin valve structure; where large spin current preferably relaxes into the transition metals, exhibiting strong spin-orbit interactions. Thereby nonlocal spin valve measurements enable us to evaluate their spin Hall conductivities. The sign of the spin Hall conductivity changes systematically depending on the number of $d$ electrons. This tendency is in good agreement with the recent theoretical calculation based on the intrinsic spin Hall…
We investigate numerically the integer quantum Hall effect (IQHE) in a two-dimensional square lattice with non-interacting electrons subjected to disorder and uniform magnetic field in a direction perpendicular to the lattice plane. We employ nearest-neighbor tight-binding Hamiltonian to describe the system and obtain the longitudinal and transverse conductivities by using Kubo formalism. The interplay between the magnetic field and disorder is also discussed. Our analysis may be helpful in studying IQHE in any discrete lattice model.
We discuss the quantum Hall effect of bilayer graphene with finite gate voltage where the Fermi energy exceeds the interlayer hopping energy. We calculated magnetic susceptibility, diagonal and off-diagonal conductivities in finite-magnetic-field formalism, and observed crossover of integer quantum Hall effect from two independent monolayer type system to strongly coupled bilayer systems by changing the ratio of interlayer hopping energy and the gate voltage. We also discuss the case of multilayer systems with Bernal stacking
We study the intrinsic spin Hall conductivity (SHC) and the $d$-orbital Hall conductivity (OHC) in metallic $d$-electron systems based on the multiorbital tight-binding model. The obtained Hall conductivities are much larger than that in $p$-type semiconductors. The origin of these huge Hall effects is the "effective Aharonov-Bohm phase" induced by the signs of inter-orbital hopping integrals as well as atomic spin-orbit interaction. Huge SHC and OHC due to this mecahnism is ubiquitous in multiorbital transition metals.
Based on first principles calculations and self-consistent solution of linearized Boltzmann-Peierls equation for phonon transport approach within a three-phonon scattering framework, we characterize lattice thermal conductivities k of freestanding silicene, germanene and stanene under different isotropic tensile strains and temperatures. We find a strong size dependence of k for silicene with tensile strain, i.e., divergent k with increasing system size, in contrast, the intrinsic room temperature k for unstrained silicene converges with system size to 19.34 W/m-K by 178 nm. The room temperatu…
We develop a theory for the pseudorelativistic fractional quantum Hall effect in graphene, which is based on a multicomponent abelian Chern-Simons theory in the fermionic functional integral approach. Calculations are performed in the Keldysh formalism, directly giving access to real-time correlation functions at finite temperature. We obtain an exact effective action for the Chern-Simons gauge fields, which is expanded to second order in the gauge field fluctations around the mean-field solution. The one-loop fermionic polarization tensor as well as the electromagnetic response tensor in rand…
Several different experimental techniques have been used in efforts to measure the spin Hall conductivity and the spin Hall angle in Pt samples at room temperature, with results that disagree by more than a factor of 20, with spin Hall conductivities from 2.4 x 10^4 to 5.1 x 10^5 [hbar/(2e)] (Ohm-m)^-1 and spin Hall angles from 0.0037 to 0.08. We review this work, and analyze possible reasons for the discrepancies. We explain that the smallest values for the spin Hall angle that have been reported, based on measurements of lateral permalloy/copper/platinum devices, are incorrect because the or…
We calculate spin Hall conductivities in the two dimensional electron systems with Rashba spin-orbit interaction. The salient feature is that, apart from the usual spin-Hall conductivity σ^z_{xy} which corresponds to the induction of out-of-plane spin-current due to the application of transverse charge current, there is a novel spin-Hall conductivity σ^\perp_{xy} which arises due to the induction of transverse spin-polarized current in the transverse direction by the application of in-plane spin-polarized current. This phenomenon which we call as `spin-spin' Hall effect is a spin analog of con…
