The quantum Hall effect in a 2D electron system expresses a topological invariant, leading to a quantized conductivity. The thermal Hall and thermoelectric Nernst conductances in two dimensions are also reported to be quantized in specific systems. However, a comprehensive study of these quantities within one formalism for quantum Hall systems is so far elusive. In this work, we investigate the Hall, thermal Hall, and Nernst effects analytically and numerically in 2D and 3D. In addition to the quantized values for the Hall and thermal Hall conductances in two dimensions, we also find quasi-quantized values in three dimensions, which are the related 2D quanta scaled by a characteristic length. The Nernst conductivity is not generally quantized. Instead, an integration in energy is required to obtain a universally (quasi-)quantized thermoelectric quantity.
The electrical and heat currents flowing through a quantum dot are calculated in the presence of a time-modulated gate voltage with the help of the out-of-equilibrium Green function technique. From the first harmonics of the currents, we extract the electrical and thermoelectrical trans-admittances and ac-conductances. Next, by a careful comparison of the ac-conductances with the finite-frequency electrical and mixed electrical-heat noises, we establish the fluctuation-dissipation relations linking these quantities, which are thus generalized out-of-equilibrium for a quantum system. It is show…
We study the thermoelectrical transports for an interacting dot attached to two graphene electrodes. Graphene band structure shows a pseudogap density of states that affects strongly the transport properties. In this work, we focus on the Coulomb blockade regime and derive the expression for Onsager matrix O_{ij} that relates the electrical and heat currents with electrical and thermal biases in the linear response regime. Our findings show double peak structures for the electrical and thermal conductances versus the dot level in accordance with the Coulom blockade phenomenon. Remarkably, howe…
We investigate the conductance and thermopower of massless Dirac fermions through a quantum dot using a pseudogap Anderson model in the non-crossing approximation. When the Fermi level is at the Dirac point, the conductance has a cusp where the thermopower changes its sign. When the Fermi level is away from the Dirac point, the Kondo temperature illustrates a quantum impurity transition between an asymmetric strong coupling Kondo state and a localized moment state. The conductance shows a peak near this transition and reaches the unitary limit at low temperatures. The magnitude of the thermopo…
Electric and thermoelectric properties of strictly monolayer MoS$_2$ films, which are grown using a novel micro-cavity based CVD growth technique, have been studied under diverse environmental and annealing conditions. Resistance of a thermoelectric device that is fabricated on a continuous monolayer MoS$_2$ layer using photolithography technique has been found to reduce by about six orders of magnitudes upon annealing in vacuum at 525 K. Seebeck coefficient of the layer also reduces by almost an order of magnitude upon annealing. When the sample is exposed to oxygen atmosphere, these paramete…
The charge transport of a serially coupled quantum dots (SCQD) connected to the metallic electrodes is theoretically investigated in the Coulomb blockade regime. A closed-form expression for the tunneling current of SCQD in the {\color{red} weak interdot hopping} limit is obtained by solving an extended two-site Hubbard model via the Green's function method. We use this expression to investigate spin current rectification, negative differential conductance, and coherent tunneling in the nonlinear response regime. The current rectification arising from the space symmetry breaking of SCQD is sup…
It is shown that the normal electron-electron scattering is a source of electrical resistance on non-contact current excitation in two-dimensional spin-split electron systems. In contrast to the contact current injection, non-contact current excitation causes spatially inhomogeneous polarization in a two-dimensional conductor leading to new resistivity mechanisms.
We study electrical and optical conductivities of hole gas in $p$-doped bulk III-V semiconductors described by the Luttinger Hamiltonian. We provide exact analytical expressions of the Drude conductivity, inverse relaxation time for various impurity potentials, Drude weight and optical conductivity in terms of the Luttinger parameters $γ_1 $ and $γ_2$. The back scattering is completely suppressed as a result of the helicity conservation of the heavy and light hole states. We find that the inverse relaxation time of heavy holes is much less than that of the light holes for Coulomb-type and Gaus…
Heat dissipation issues are the emerging challenges in the field of flexible electronics. Thermal management of flexible electronics creates a demand for flexible materials with highly anisotropic thermal conductivity, which work as heat spreaders to remove excess heat in the in-plane direction and as heat shields to protect human skin or device components under them from heating. This study proposes a self-assembled silver nanowire network with high thermal and electrical anisotropy with the potential to solve these challenges. The in-plane thermal conductivity of the network along the axial …
Theory of electrical spin injection from a ferromagnetic (FM) metal into a normal (N) conductor is presented. We show that tunnel contacts (T) can dramatically increase spin injection and solve the problem of the mismatch in the conductivities of a FM metal and a semiconductor microstructure. We also present explicit expressions for the spin-valve resistance of FM-T-N- and FM-T-N-T-FM-junctions with tunnel contacts at the interfaces and show that the resistance includes both positive and negative contributions (Kapitza resistance and injection conductivity, respectively).
The electrical conductivity of PVC films prepared with a patented plasticizer of type "A" was measured with high precision automated setup, based on standard ring sell with a voltage range much less than breakdown voltage. Continual voltage-current measurements permit to take into account Debay relaxation process and clearly distinguish specific polymer film conductivity effects, connected with continuous current-stabilization behavior and transitions between two stable (long-living) states with several order magnitude different conductivities. Spontaneous reversible and non-destructive transi…
The thermal properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are of significant interest, yet their dependence on SWNT chirality has been, until now, not explored experimentally. Here we used electrical heating and infrared thermal imaging to simultaneously study thermal and electrical transport in chirality-sorted SWNT networks. We examined solution processed 90% semiconducting, 90% metallic, purified unsorted (66% semiconducting), and as-grown HiPco SWNT films. The thermal conductivities of these films range from 80 to 370 W/m/K but are not controlled by chirality, instead being dependen…
The time-dependent thermopower is analyzed through an interacting quantum dot coupled to a time-dependent gate voltage and under the influence of an external magnetic field using the Keldysh nonequilibrium Green's function formalism. Formal expressions of the electrical and thermal conductances, thermopower, and thermoelectrical figure of merit are obtained. The influence of the magnetic field on the displacement current and the heat current is studied. Results show that although applying time-dependent gate voltage results in the enhancement of the Seebeck coefficient, the electron-electron i…
The status of the ac quantum Hall effect is reviewed with emphasis on the theoretical development in recent years. In particular, the numerical approaches for the calculation of the frequency dependent Hall and longitudinal conductivities of non-interacting electrons are considered in detail. Results for the frequency scaling at the critical point and for the frequency dependent deviation of the Hall conductivity from the quantised plateau value are presented.
We study the electrical transport properties of a two-dimensional electron gas with the Rashba spin-orbit interaction in presence of a constant perpendicular magnetic field $(B_0 \hat z)$ which is weakly modulated by ${\bf B_1} = B_1 \cos (q x) \hat z$, where $B_1 \ll B_0 $ and $q = 2 π/a $ with $a$ is the modulation period. We obtain the analytical expressions of the diffusive conductivities for spin-up and spin-down electrons. The conductivities for spin-up and spin-down electrons oscillate with different frequencies and produce beating patterns in the amplitude of the Weiss and Shubnikov-de…
Understanding and controlling quantum transport in low-dimensional systems is pivotal for heat management at the nanoscale. One promising strategy to obtain the desired transport properties is to engineer particular spectral structures. In this work we are interested in quasiperiodic disorder - incommensurate with the underlying periodicity of the lattice - which induces fractality in the energy spectrum. A well known example is the Fibonacci model which, despite being non-interacting, yields anomalous diffusion with a continuously varying dynamical exponent smoothly crossing over from superdi…
Superlattices are promising low-dimensional nanomaterials for thermoelectric technology that is capable of directly converting low-grade heat energy to useful electrical power. In this work, the thermal conductivities of GaAs/Ge superlattice nanostructures were investigated systematically in relation to their morphologies and interfaces. Thermal conductivities were measured using ultrafast time-domain thermoreflectance and were found to decrease with increasing interface densities, consistent with our understanding of microscopic phonon transport in the particle regime. Lower thermal conductiv…
We study electrical and thermoelectrical properties for a double quantum dot system. We consider the cases of both single-level and multilevel quantum dots whatever the way they are coupled, either in a series or in a parallel arrangement. The calculations are performed by using the nonequilibrium Green function theory. In the case of a single-level double quantum dot, the problem is exactly solvable whereas for a multilevel double quantum dot, an analytical solution is obtained in the limit of energy-independent hopping integrals. { We present a detailed discussion about} the dependences of e…
We investigate the linear thermoelectric response of an interacting quantum dot side-coupled by one of two Majorana fermions (MFs) formed at the ends of a topological superconducting wire. We employ the numerical renormalization group technique to obtain the thermoelectrical conductance $L$ as well as the electrical conductance $G$ when the background temperature $T$ and the dot gate are tuned. We distinguish two transport regimes in which $L$ displays different features: the weak- $(Γ_{m} < T_{K})$ and strong-coupling $(Γ_{m} > T_{K})$ regimes, where $Γ_{m}$ and $T_{K}$ are the Majorana-dot c…
We report on the thermal and electrical properties of hybrid epoxy composites with graphene and boron nitride fillers. The thicknesses, lateral dimensions, and aspect ratios of each filler material were intentionally selected for geometric similarity to one another, in contrast to prior studies that utilized dissimilar filler geometries to achieve a "synergistic" effect. We demonstrate that the electrically-conductive graphene and electrically-insulating boron nitride fillers allow one to effectively engineer the thermal and electrical conductivities of their resulting composites. By varying t…
We describe electrical detection of spin pumping in metallic nanostructures. In the spin pumping effect, a precessing ferromagnet attached to a normal-metal acts as a pump of spin-polarized current, giving rise to a spin accumulation. The resulting spin accumulation induces a backflow of spin current into the ferromagnet and generates a dc voltage due to the spin dependent conductivities of the ferromagnet. The magnitude of such voltage is proportional to the spin-relaxation properties of the normal-metal. By using platinum as a contact material we observe, in agreement with theory, that the v…
We derive the anomalous Hall contributions arising from dipolar interactions to diffusive spin transport in magnetic insulators. Magnons, the carriers of angular momentum in these systems, are shown to have a non-zero Berry curvature, resulting in a measurable Hall effect. For yttrium iron garnet (YIG) thin films we calculate both the anomalous and magnon spin conductivities. We show that for a magnetic field perpendicular to the film the anomalous Hall conductivity is finite. This results in a non-zero Hall signal, which can be measured experimentally using Permalloy strips arranged like a Ha…
We calculate dc-conductivities of ballistic graphene undulated by a overlying moving unidirectional electrical superlattice (SL) potential whose SL-velocity is smaller than the electron velocity. We obtain no dependence of the conductivity on the velocity along the direction of the superlattice wavevector. In the orthogonal direction however, the dependence is strong on the velocity especially at voltages where a new Dirac point emerges for zero velocity. It is shown that the infinite graphene system can serve as an ideal motion detector at potentials where the first new Dirac point emerges. T…
The increasing interest in photoactivated proteins as natural replacement of standard inorganic materials in photocells drives to the compared analysis of bacteriorhodopsin and proteorhodopsin, two widely diffused proteins belonging to the family of \textit{type-1} opsins. These proteins share similar behaviours but exhibit relevant differences in the sequential chain of the amino acids constituting their tertiary structure. The use of an impedance network analogue to model the protein main features provides a microscopic interpretation of a set of experiments on their photoconductance propert…
The spin relaxation time of localized charge carriers is few orders of magnitude larger than that of free electrons and holes. Therefore mutual conversion of spin polarization, charge current and spin current turns out to be underlined in the hopping conductivity regime. We reveal different regimes of the coupled spin and charge dynamics depending on the relation between spin relaxation time and the characteristic hopping time. We derive kinetic equations to describe electrical spin orientation, dc spin-Hall effect, and spin galvanic effect in the transverse magnetic field. The generalized mac…
Electrical resistivities can be different for charge currents travelling parallel or perpendicular to the magnetization in magnetically ordered conductors or semiconductors, resulting in the well-known planar Hall effect and anisotropic magnetoresistance. Here, we study the analogous anisotropic magnetotransport behavior for magnons in a magnetic insulator Y$_{3}$Fe$_{5}$O$_{12}$. Electrical and thermal magnon injection, and electrical detection methods are used at room temperature with transverse and longitudinal geometries to measure the magnon planar Hall effect and anisotropic magnetoresis…
We analyze the data of the recent paper Nature 559, 205 (2018) and show that it contains an observation of thermal and electric conductivities of the doping layers in GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures which violates the Wiedemann-Franz law. Namely, the measured thermal conductivity of the doping layers is similar to that of a metal while the electrical conductivity is exponentially small. We find that these results may be related to the exciton contribution to thermal conductivity calculated in several recent theoretical works for metallic samples.
We present a study of electric, thermal and thermoelectric response in noncollinear antiferromagnet Mn$_{3}$Sn, which hosts a large Anomalous Hall Effect (AHE). Berry curvature generates off-diagonal thermal(Righi-Leduc) and thermoelectric(Nernst) signals, which are detectable at room temperature and invertible with a small magnetic field. The thermal and electrical Hall conductivities respect the Wiedemann-Franz law, implying that the transverse currents induced by Berry curvature are carried by Fermi surface quasi-particles. In contrast to conventional ferromagnets, the anomalous Lorenz numb…
