In this paper non-group permutation modulated sequences for the Gaussian channel are considered. Without the restriction to group codes rather than subsets of group codes, arbitrary rates are achievable. The code construction utilizes the known optimal group constellations to ensure at least the same performance but exploit the Gray code ordering structure of multiset permutations as a selection criterion at the decoder. The decoder achieves near maximum likelihood performance at low computational cost and low additional memory requirements at the receiver.
Motivated by charge balancing constraints for rank modulation schemes, we introduce the notion of balanced permutations and derive the capacity of balanced permutation codes. We also describe simple interleaving methods for permutation code constructions and show that they approach capacity
In this paper, the spectral efficiency of permutation modulation-based multiple input multiple output (MIMO) visible light communication is improved using systematically designed, multiweight codeword matrices. Soft-decision, low-complexity detection schemes are then designed for the receiver and compared with the maximum likelihood (ML) detection method. Bit error rate (BER) results show the soft-decision detection algorithm is able to decode the transmitted information without knowledge of the channel state information. This enables the mobile receiver decode information while within the fie…
We propose a novel scheme that allows MIMO system to modulate a set of permutation matrices to send more information bits, extending our initial work on the topic. This system is called Permutation Matrix Modulation (PMM). The basic idea is to employ a permutation matrix as a precoder and treat it as a modulated symbol. We continue the evolution of index modulation in MIMO by adopting all-antenna activation and obtaining a set of unique symbols from altering the positions of the antenna transmit power. We provide the analysis of the achievable rate of PMM under Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) dis…
Synthesis of DNA molecules offers unprecedented advances in storage technology. Yet, the microscopic world in which these molecules reside induces error patterns that are fundamentally different from their digital counterparts. Hence, to maintain reliability in reading and writing, new coding schemes must be developed. In a reading technique called shotgun sequencing, a long DNA string is read in a sliding window fashion, and a profile vector is produced. It was recently suggested by Kiah et al. that such a vector can represent the permutation which is induced by its entries, and hence a rank-…
We study permutations over the set of $\ell$-grams, that are feasible in the sense that there is a sequence whose $\ell$-gram frequency has the same ranking as the permutation. Codes, which are sets of feasible permutations, protect information stored in DNA molecules using the rank-modulation scheme, and read using the shotgun sequencing technique. We construct systematic codes with an efficient encoding algorithm, and show that they are optimal in size. The length of the DNA sequences that correspond to the codewords is shown to be polynomial in the code parameters. Non-systematic with large…
We consider the problem of using polar codes with higher order modulation over AWGN channels. Unlike prior work, we focus on using modulation independent polar codes. That is, the polar codes are not re-designed based on the modulation used. Instead, we propose bit-permuted coded modulation (BPCM): a technique for using the multilevel coding (MLC) approach for an arbitrary polar code. The BPCM technique exploits a natural connection between MLC and polar codes. It involves applying bit permutations prior to mapping the polar code to a higher order modulation. The bit permutations are designed,…
Snake-in-the-box code is a Gray code which is capable of detecting a single error. Gray codes are important in the context of the rank modulation scheme which was suggested recently for representing information in flash memories. For a Gray code in this scheme the codewords are permutations, two consecutive codewords are obtained by using the "push-to-the-top" operation, and the distance measure is defined on permutations. In this paper the Kendall's $τ$-metric is used as the distance measure. We present a general method for constructing such Gray codes. We apply the method recursively to obta…
We construct Gray codes over permutations for the rank-modulation scheme, which are also capable of correcting errors under the infinity-metric. These errors model limited-magnitude or spike errors, for which only single-error-detecting Gray codes are currently known. Surprisingly, the error-correcting codes we construct achieve a better asymptotic rate than that of presently known constructions not having the Gray property, and exceed the Gilbert-Varshamov bound. Additionally, we present efficient ranking and unranking procedures, as well as a decoding procedure that runs in linear time. Fina…
The rank modulation scheme has been proposed for efficient writing and storing data in non-volatile memory storage. Error-correction in the rank modulation scheme is done by considering permutation codes. In this paper we consider codes in the set of all permutations on $n$ elements, $S_n$, using the Kendall $τ$-metric. The main goal of this paper is to derive new bounds on the size of such codes. For this purpose we also consider perfect codes, diameter perfect codes, and the size of optimal anticodes in the Kendall $τ$-metric, structures which have their own considerable interest. We prove t…
Permutation codes, in the form of rank modulation, have shown promise for applications such as flash memory. One of the metrics recently suggested as appropriate for rank modulation is the Ulam metric, which measures the minimum translocation distance between permutations. Multipermutation codes have also been proposed as a generalization of permutation codes that would improve code size (and consequently the code rate). In this paper we analyze the Ulam metric in the context of multipermutations, noting some similarities and differences between the Ulam metric in the context of permutations. …
Differential spatial modulation (DSM) was recently proposed to overcome the challenge of channel estimation in spatial modulation (SM). In this letter, we propose a gray code order of antenna index permutations for DSM. To facilitate the implementation, the well-known Trotter-Johnson ranking and unranking algorithms are adopted, which results in similar computational complexity to the existing DSM that uses the lexicographic order. The coding gain achieved by the proposed gray code order over the existing lexicographic order is also analyzed and verified via simulations, which reveals a maximu…
In the rank modulation scheme for flash memories, permutation codes have been studied. In this paper, we study perfect permutation codes in $S_n$, the set of all permutations on $n$ elements, under the Kendall τ-Metric. We answer one open problem proposed by Buzaglo and Etzion. That is, proving the nonexistence of perfect codes in $S_n$, under the Kendall τ-metric, for more values of $n$. Specifically, we present the recursive formulas for the size of a ball with radius $r$ in $S_n$ under the Kendall τ-metric. Further, We prove that there are no perfect $t$-error-correcting codes in $S_n$ unde…
This paper focuses on the problem of separately modulating and jointly estimating two independent continuous-valued parameters sent over a Gaussian multiple-access channel (MAC) under the mean square error (MSE) criterion. To this end, we first improve an existing lower bound on the MSE that is obtained using the parameter modulation-estimation techniques for the single-user additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. As for the main contribution of this work, this improved modulation-estimation analysis is generalized to the model of the two-user Gaussian MAC, which will likely become an im…
Coded caching is an information theoretic scheme to reduce high peak hours traffic by partially prefetching files in the users local storage during low peak hours. This paper considers heterogeneous decentralized caching systems where cache of users and content library files may have distinct sizes. The server communicates with the users through a Gaussian broadcast channel. The main contribution of this paper is a novel modulation strategy to map the multicast messages generated in the coded caching delivery phase to the symbols of a signal constellation, such that users can leverage their ca…
Permutation codes are widely studied objects due to their numerous applications in various areas, such as power line communications, block ciphers, and the rank modulation scheme for flash memories. Several kinds of metrics are considered for permutation codes according to their specific applications. This paper concerns some improvements on the bounds of permutation codes under Hamming metric and Kendall's $τ$-metric respectively, using mainly a graph coloring approach. Specifically, under Hamming metric, we improve the Gilbert-Varshamov bound asymptotically by a factor $n$, when the minimum …
Permutation codes were extensively studied in order to correct different types of errors for the applications on power line communication and rank modulation for flash memory. In this paper, we introduce the neural network decoders for permutation codes to correct these errors with one-shot decoding, which treat the decoding as $n$ classification tasks for non-binary symbols for a code of length $n$. These are actually the first general decoders introduced to deal with any error type for these two applications. The performance of the decoders is evaluated by simulations with different error mo…
Optical wireless communication (OWC) using intensity-modulation and direct-detection (IM/DD) has a channel model which possesses unique features, due to the constraints imposed on the channel input. The aim of this tutorial is to overview results on the capacity of IM/DD channels with input-independent Gaussian noise as a model of OWC channels. It provides the reader with an entry point to the topic, and highlights some major contributions in this area. It begins with a discussion on channel models and how this IM/DD Gaussian channel model comes about, in addition to an explanation of input co…
In orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with index modulation (OFDM-IM), the active subcarriers can convey information bits by modulated symbols as well as their indices. OFDM-IM has attracted a great deal of attention from researchers by virtue of high energy efficiency. Unfortunately, OFDM-IM has inherited large peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of the classical OFDM signal, but there are few works dealing with it. Selected mapping (SLM) is a promising PAPR reduction technique that is distortionless, has good PAPR reducing capability, and can be easily adapted in OFDM-IM systems. In S…
For a Gray code in the scheme of rank modulation for flash memories, the codewords are permutations and two consecutive codewords are obtained using a push-to-the-top operation. We consider snake-in-the-box codes under Kendall's $τ$-metric, which is a Gray code capable of detecting one Kendall's $τ$-error. We answer two open problems posed by Horovitz and Etzion. Firstly, we prove the validity of a construction given by them, resulting in a snake of size $M_{2n+1}=\frac{(2n+1)!}{2}-2n+1$. Secondly, we come up with a different construction aiming at a longer snake of size $M_{2n+1}=\frac{(2n+1)…
For odd n, the alternating group on n elements is generated by the permutations that jump an element from any odd position to position 1. We prove Hamiltonicity of the associated directed Cayley graph for all odd n not equal to 5. (A result of Rankin implies that the graph is not Hamiltonian for n=5.) This solves a problem arising in rank modulation schemes for flash memory. Our result disproves a conjecture of Horovitz and Etzion, and proves another conjecture of Yehezkeally and Schwartz.
We propose index codes, based on multidimensional QAM constellations, for the Gaussian broadcast channel, where every receiver demands all the messages from the source. The efficiency with which an index code exploits receiver side information in this broadcast channel is characterised by a code design metric called "side information gain". The known index codes for this broadcast channel enjoy large side information gains, but do not encode all the source messages at the same rate, and do not admit message sizes that are powers of two. The index codes proposed in this letter, which are based …

This paper addresses the achievable rate of single cell and sum rate of multi-cell orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) index modulation (IM). The single cell achievable rate of OFDM-IM with Gaussian input is calculated using a multi-ary symmetric channel. Then, the cumulative distribution function (CDF) of multi-cell OFDM-IM is investigated by stochastic geometry. Furthermore, it is proved in this paper that the probability density function (PDF) of noise plus intercell-interference (ICI) in multi-cell OFDM-IM with quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) follows a mixture of Gaussi…
In this work, targeting, e.g., future generation cellular, microwave-links, or optical fiber systems, we propose a new geometric shaping design for golden angle modulation (GAM) based on a (double) truncated Gaussian input distribution. The design improves the mutual information (MI), and the peak-to-average power ratio, over the full signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) range relative to two key GAM schemes introduced in [1],[2]. Inspired by the proposed geometric shaping, a simpler, SNR-dependent, design is also suggested. The performance is numerically evaluated with respect to MI and compared with …
In this paper, we study joint antenna activity detection, channel estimation, and multiuser detection for massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with general spatial modulation (GSM). We first establish a double-sparsity massive MIMO model by considering the channel sparsity of the massive MIMO channel and the signal sparsity of GSM. Based on the double-sparsity model, we formulate a blind detection problem. To solve the blind detection problem, we develop message-passing based blind channel-and-signal estimation (BCSE) algorithm. The BCSE algorithm basically follows the affine …
We consider the special case of index coding over the Gaussian broadcast channel where each receiver has prior knowledge of a subset of messages at the transmitter and demands all the messages from the source. We propose a concatenated coding scheme for this problem, using an index code for the Gaussian channel as an inner code/modulation to exploit side information at the receivers, and an outer code to attain coding gain against the channel noise. We derive the capacity region of this scheme by viewing the resulting channel as a multiple-access channel with many receivers, and relate it to t…
In this paper, we propose to use Brownian motions to model families of continuous-time multiuser Gaussian channels without bandwidth limit. It turns out that such a formulation allows parallel translation of many fundamental notions and techniques from the discrete-time setting to the continuous-time regime, which enables us to derive the capacity regions of a continuous-time white Gaussian multiple access channel with/without feedback, a continuous-time white Gaussian interference channel without feedback and a continuous-time white Gaussian broadcast channel without feedback. In theory, thes…
Consider a noisy linear observation model with an unknown permutation, based on observing $y = Π^* A x^* + w$, where $x^* \in \mathbb{R}^d$ is an unknown vector, $Π^*$ is an unknown $n \times n$ permutation matrix, and $w \in \mathbb{R}^n$ is additive Gaussian noise. We analyze the problem of permutation recovery in a random design setting in which the entries of the matrix $A$ are drawn i.i.d. from a standard Gaussian distribution, and establish sharp conditions on the SNR, sample size $n$, and dimension $d$ under which $Π^*$ is exactly and approximately recoverable. On the computational fron…
The entropy computation of Gaussian mixture distributions with a large number of components has a prohibitive computational complexity. In this paper, we propose a novel approach exploiting the sphere decoding concept to bound and approximate such entropy terms with reduced complexity and good accuracy. Moreover, we propose an SNR region based enhancement of the approximation method to reduce the complexity even further. Using Monte-Carlo simulations, the proposed methods are numerically demonstrated for the computation of the mutual information including the entropy term of various channels w…
One of the most important practical realizations of the fundamentals of quantum mechanics is continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD). Here we propose the adaptive multicarrier quadrature division-multiuser quadrature allocation (AMQD-MQA) multiple access technique for continuous-variable quantum key distribution. The MQA scheme is based on the AMQD modulation, which granulates the inputs of the users into Gaussian subcarrier continuous-variables (CVs). In an AMQD-MQA multiple access scenario, the simultaneous reliable transmission of the users is handled by the dynamic allocation …
In this paper, soft-decision (SD) decoders of permutation trellis code (PTC) with $M$-ary frequency shift keying are designed using three optimization algorithms and presented in four decoding schemes. In a concatenated code such as PTC, the Viterbi decoder for the outer convolutional code provides maximum likelihood decoding. Hence, the error correction performance is dependent on the decoding scheme used for the inner code. Due to the structure of the encoder with the modulation scheme, the channel output can be interpreted as an assignment problem. SD decoding can then be designed according…
