We prove a Wegner estimate for a large class of multiparticle Anderson Hamiltonians on the lattice. These estimates will allow us to prove Anderson localization for such systems. A detailed proof of localization will be given in a subsequent paper.
We consider Landau Hamiltonians with a weak coupling random electric potential of breather type. Under appropriate assumptions we prove a Wegner estimate. It implies the Hoelder continuity of the integrated density of states. The main challenge is the problem how to deal with non-linear dependence on the random parameters.
We consider non-ergodic magnetic random Schödinger operators with a bounded magnetic vector potential. We prove an optimal Wegner estimate valid at all energies. The proof is an adaptation of the arguments from [Kle13], combined with a recent quantitative unique continuation estimate for eigenfunctions of elliptic operators from [BTV15]. This generalizes Klein's result to operators with a bounded magnetic vector potential. Moreover, we study the dependence of the Wegner-constant on the disorder parameter. In particular, we show that above the model-dependent threshold $E_0(\infty) \in (0, \inf…
We prove some abstract Wegner bounds for random self-adjoint operators. Applications include elementary proofs of Wegner estimates for discrete and continuous Anderson Hamiltonians with possibly sparse potentials, as well as Wegner bounds for quantum graphs with random edge length or random vertex coupling. We allow the coupling constants describing the randomness to be correlated and to have quite general distributions.
We prove a unique continuation principle for spectral projections of Schr\" odinger operators. We consider a Schr\" odinger operator $H= -Δ+ V$ on $\mathrm{L}^2(\mathbb{R}^d)$, and let $H_Λ$ denote its restriction to a finite box $Λ$ with either Dirichlet or periodic boundary condition. We prove unique continuation estimates of the type $χ_I (H_Λ) W χ_I (H_Λ) \ge κ\, χ_I (H_Λ) $ with $κ>0$ for appropriate potentials $W\ge 0$ and intervals $I$. As an application, we obtain optimal Wegner estimates at all energies for a class of non-ergodic random Schr\" odinger operators with alloy{-type random…
We prove a Wegner estimate for discrete Schrödinger operators with a potential given by a Gaussian random process. The only assumption is that the covariance function decays exponentially, no monotonicity assumption is required. This improves earlier results where abstract conditions on the conditional distribution, compactly supported and non-negative, or compactly supported covariance functions with positive mean are considered.
We consider a two dimensional magnetic Schroedinger operator with a spatially stationary random magnetic field. We assume that the magnetic field has a positive lower bound and that it has Fourier modes on arbitrarily short scales. We prove the Wegner estimate at arbitrary energy, i.e. we show that the averaged density of states is finite throughout the whole spectrum. We also prove Anderson localization at the bottom of the spectrum.
We consider a two-particle quantum systems in a d-dimensional Euclidean space with interaction and in presence of a random external potential (a continuous two-particle Anderson model). We establish Wegner-type estimates (inequalities) for such models, assessing the probability that random spectra of Hamiltonians in finite volumes intersect a given set.
We prove that the integrated density of states (IDS) of random Schrödinger operators with Anderson-type potentials on $L^2 (\R^d)$, for $d \geq1$, is locally Hölder continuous at all energies with the same Hölder exponent $0<α\leq1$ as the conditional probability measure for the single-site random variable. As a special case, we prove that if the probability distribution is absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure with a bounded density, then the IDS is Lipschitz continuous at all energies. The single-site potential $u\in L\_0^\infty (\R^d)$ must be nonnegative and compactly-supp…
We analyse a two-particle quantum system in $\R^d$ with interaction and in presence of a random external potential field with a continuous argument (an Anderson model in a continuous space). Our aim is to establish the so-called Wegner-type estimates for such a model, assessing the probability that random spectra of Hamiltonians in finite volumes intersect with a given set. For the lattice version of the two-particle model, a similar result was obtained in [8]
We consider an alloy type potential on an infinite metric graph. We assume a covering condition on the single site potentials. For random Schrödingers operator associated with the alloy type potential restricted to finite volume subgraphs we prove a Wegner estimate which reproduces the modulus of continuity of the single site distribution measure. The Wegner constant is independent of the energy.
We introduce and prove local Wegner estimates for continuous generalized Anderson Hamiltonians, where the single-site random variables are independent but not necessarily identically distributed. In particular, we get Wegner estimates with a constant that goes to zero as we approach the bottom of the spectrum. As an application, we show that the (differentiated) density of states exhibits the same Lifshitz tails upper bound as the integrated density of states.
We consider $N\times N$ Hermitian random matrices with independent identically distributed entries (Wigner matrices). The matrices are normalized so that the average spacing between consecutive eigenvalues is of order $1/N$. Under suitable assumptions on the distribution of the single matrix element, we first prove that, away from the spectral edges, the empirical density of eigenvalues concentrates around the Wigner semicircle law on energy scales $η\gg N^{-1}$. This result establishes the semicircle law on the optimal scale and it removes a logarithmic factor from our previous result \cite{E…
We consider the discrete Anderson model and prove enhanced Wegner and Minami estimates where the interval length is replaced by the IDS computed on the interval. We use these estimates to improve on the description of finite volume eigenvalues and eigenfunctions obtained in a previous paper. As a consequence of the improved description of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions, we revisit a number of results on the spectral statistics in the localized regime and extend their domain of validity, namely : - the local spectral statistics for the unfolded eigenvalues; - the local asymptotic ergodicity of …
In this paper, we consider a class of two-particle tight-binding Hamiltonians, describing pairs of interacting quantum particles on the lattice $\Z^d$, $d\ge 1$ subject to a common external potential $V(x)$ which we assume quasi-periodic and depending on an auxiliary parameter. Such parametric families of ergodic deterministic potentials ("grand ensembles") have been introduced earlier in \cite{C07}, in the framework of single-particle lattice systems, where it was proved that a non-uniform analog of the Wegner bound holds true for a class of quasi-periodic grand ensembles. Using the approach …
In this note, a Wegner estimate for random divergence-type operators that are monotone in the randomness is proven. The proof is based on a recently shown unique continuation estimate for the gradient and the ensuing eigenvalue liftings. The random model which is studied here contains quite general random perturbations, among others, some that have a non-linear dependence on the random parameters.
We prove an optimal one-volume Wegner estimate for interacting systems of $N$ quantum particles moving in the presence of random potentials. The proof is based on the scale-free unique continuation principle recently developed for the 1-body problem by Rojas-Molina and Veselic \cite{RM-V1} and extended to spectral projectors by Klein \cite{klein1}. These results extend of our previous results in \cite{CHK:2003,CHK:2007}. We also prove a two-volume Wegner estimate as introduced in \cite{chulaevsky-suhov1}. The random potentials are generalized Anderson-type potentials in each variable with mini…
We prove localization at the bottom of the spectrum for a random Schrödinger operator in the continuum with a single-site potential probability distribution supported by a Cantor set of zero Lebesgue measure. This distribution is too singular to be treated by the usual methods. In particular, an "a priori" Wegner estimate is not available. To prove the result we perform a multiscale analysis following the work of Bourgain and Kenig for the Bernoulli-Anderson Hamiltonian, and obtain the required Wegner estimate scale by scale. To do so, we generalize their argument based on Sperner's Lemma by r…
We consider Schroedinger operators with a random potential of alloy type on infinite metric graphs which obey certain uniformity conditions. For single site potentials of fixed sign we prove that the random Schroedinger operator restricted to a finite volume subgraph obeys a Wegner estimate which is linear in the volume and reproduces the modulus of continuity of the single site distribution. This improves and unifies earlier results for alloy type models on metric graphs. We discuss applications of Wegner estimates to bounds of the modulus of continuity of the integrated density of states of …
We prove a conditional Wegner estimate for Schrödinger operators with random potentials of breather type. More precisely, we reduce the proof of the Wegner estimate to a scale free unique continuation principle. The relevance of such unique continuation principles has been emphasized in previous papers, in particular in recent years. We consider the standard breather model, meaning that the single site potential is the characteristic function of a ball or a cube. While our methods work for a substantially larger class of random breather potentials, we discuss in this particular paper only the …
We propose a fairly simple and natural extension of Stollmann's lemma to correlated random variables. This extension allows (just as the original Stollmann's lemma does) to obtain Wegner-type estimates even in some problems of spectral analysis of random operators where the Wegner's lemma is inapplicable (e.g. for multi-particle Hamiltonians).
We study Schroedinger operators with a random potential of alloy type. The single site potentials are allowed to change sign. For a certain class of them we prove a Wegner estimate. This is a key ingredient in an existence proof of pure point spectrum of the considered random Schroedinger operators. Our estimate is valid for all bounded energy intervals and all space dimensions and implies the existence of the density of states.
The supersymmetry method pioneered by Wegner and Efetov (1979-1983) is reviewed for the case of Hermitian band random matrices, with special attention given to the original method of Schaefer and Wegner and a recent variant due to Fyodorov. Particular emphasis is placed on correctness of the mathematical reasoning.
We review recent and give some new results on the spectral properties of Schroedinger operators with a random potential of alloy type. Our point of interest is the so called Wegner estimate in the case where the single site potentials change sign. The indefinitness of the single site potential poses certain difficulties for the proof of the Wegner estimate which are still not fully understood. The Wegner estimate is a key ingredient in an existence proof of pure point spectrum of the considered random Schroedinger operators. Under certain assumptions on the considered models additionally the e…
The diagonalization of Hermitian supermatrices is studied. Such a change of coordinates is inevitable to find certain structures in random matrix theory. However it still poses serious problems since up to now the calculation of all Rothstein contributions known as Efetov-Wegner terms in physics was quite cumbersome. We derive the supermatrix Bessel function with all Efetov-Wegner terms for an arbitrary rotation invariant probability density function. As applications we consider representations of generating functions for Hermitian random matrices with and without an external field as integral…
We prove a strictly positive, locally uniform lower bound on the density of states (DOS) of continuum random Schrödinger operators on the entire spectrum, i.e. we show that the DOS does not have a zero within the spectrum. This follows from a lower Wegner estimate for finite-volume continuum random Schrödinger operators. We assume throughout iid random variables and the single-site distribution having a Lebesgue density bounded from below on its support. The main mathematical novelty in this paper are pointwise-in-energy bounds on the expectation of the spectral shift function at all energies …
We survey recent results on spectral properties of random Schrödinger operators. The focus is set on the integrated density of states (IDS). First we present a proof of the existence of a self-averaging IDS which is general enough to be applicable to random Schrödinger and Laplace-Beltrami operators on manifolds. Subsequently we study more specific models in Euclidean space, namely of alloy type, and concentrate on the regularity properties of the IDS. We discuss the role of the integrated density of states and its regularity properties for the spectral analysis of random Schrödinger operators…
We study spectra of alloy-type random Schrödinger operators on metric graphs. For finite edge subsets of general graphs we prove a Wegner estimate which is linear in the volume (i.e. the number of edges) and the length of the considered energy interval. The single site potential of the alloy-type model needs to have fixed sign, but the considered metric graph does not need to have a periodic structure. The second result we obtain is an exhaustion construction of the integrated density of states for ergodic random Schrödinger operators on metric graphs with a $\ZZ^ν$-structure. For certain mode…
We present a new approach to the eigensystem multiscale analysis (EMSA) for random Schrödinger operators that relies on the Wegner estimate. The EMSA treats all energies of the finite volume operator in an energy interval at the same time, simultaneously establishing localization of all eigenfunctions with eigenvalues in the energy interval with high probability. It implies all the usual manifestations of localization (pure point spectrum with exponentially decaying eigenfunctions, dynamical localization). The new method removes the restrictive level spacing hypothesis used in the previous ver…
We prove a Wegner estimate for alloy type models merely assuming that the single site potential is lower bounded by a characteristic function of a thick set, that is a particular set of positive measure. The proof is based on two ingredients: New unique continuation principles or uncertainty relations for linear combinations of eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on cubes from [EV20] and established proofs for Wegner estimates, e.g.~from [CHK07]. We obtain a Wegner estimate with optimal volume dependence at all energies, and localisation near the minimum of the spectrum, even for some non-stationa…
We study Anderson and alloy type random Schrödinger operators on $\ell^2(\ZZ^d)$ and $L^2(\RR^d)$. Wegner estimates are bounds on the average number of eigenvalues in an energy interval of finite box restrictions of these types of operators. For a certain class of models we prove a Wegner estimate which is linear in the volume of the box and the length of the considered energy interval. The single site potential of the Anderson/alloy type model does not need to have fixed sign, but it needs be of a generalised step function form. The result implies the Lipschitz continuity of the integrated de…
In this note we prove the existence of a localization/delocalization transition for Landau Hamiltonians randomly perturbed by an electric potential with unbounded amplitude. In particular, with probability one, no Landau gaps survive as the random potential is turned on, the gaps close, filling up partly with localized states. A minimal rate of transport is exhibited in the region of delocalization. To do so, we exploit the a priori quantization of the Hall conductance and extend recent Wegner estimates to the case of unbounded random variables.
The Wegner orbital model is a class of random operators introduced by Wegner to model the motion of a quantum particle with many internal degrees of freedom (orbitals) in a disordered medium. We consider the case when the matrix potential is Gaussian, and prove three results: localisation at strong disorder, a Wegner-type estimate on the mean density of eigenvalues, and a Minami-type estimate on the probability of having multiple eigenvalues in a short interval. The last two results are proved in the more general setting of deformed block-Gaussian matrices, which includes a class of Gaussian b…
We study Schrödinger operators on $L^2 (\RR^d)$ and $\ell^2(\ZZ^d)$ with a random potential of alloy-type. The single-site potential is assumed to be exponentially decaying but not necessarily of fixed sign. In the continuum setting we require a generalized step-function shape. Wegner estimates are bounds on the average number of eigenvalues in an energy interval of finite box restrictions of these types of operators. In the described situation a Wegner estimate which is polynomial in the volume of the box and linear in the size of the energy interval holds. We apply the established Wegner est…
We consider a two dimensional magnetic Schroedinger operator on a square lattice with a spatially stationary random magnetic field. We prove Anderson localization near the spectral edges. We use a new approach to establish a Wegner estimate that does not rely on the monotonicity of the energy on the random parameters.
We study localization and derive stochastic estimates (in particular, Wegner and Minami estimates) for the eigenvalues of weakly correlated random discrete Schrödinger operators in the localized phase. We apply these results to obtain spectral statistics for general discrete alloy type models where the single site perturbation is neither of finite rank nor of fixed sign. In particular, for the models under study, the random potential exhibits correlations at any range.
The purpose of the present work is to establish decorrelation estimates for some random discrete Schrodinger operator in dimension one. We prove that the Minami estimates are consequences of the Wegner estimates and Localization. We also prove decorrelation estimates at distinct energies for the random hopping model and Schrodinger operators with alloy-type potentials. These results are used to give a description of the spectral statistics.
We study spectral properties of ergodic random Schrödinger operators on $L^2 (\RR^d)$. The density of states is shown to exist for a certain class of alloy type potentials with single site potentials of changing sign. The Wegner estimate we prove implies Anderson localization under certain additional assumptions. For some examples we discuss briefly some properties of the common and conditional densities of the random coupling constants used in the proof of the Wegner estimate.
This paper is devoted to the study of the random displacement model on $\R^d$. We prove that, in the weak displacement regime, Anderson and dynamical localization holds near the bottom of the spectrum under a generic assumption on the single site potential and a fairly general assumption on the support of the possible displacements. This result follows from the proof of the existence of Lifshitz tail and of a Wegner estimate for the model under scrutiny.
We continue the investigations of Kirsch, Metzger and the second-named author [J. Stat. Phys. 143, 1035--1054 (2011)] on spectral properties of a certain type of random block operators. In particular, we establish an alternative version of a Wegner estimate and an improved result on Lifschitz tails at the internal band edges. Using these ingredients and the bootstrap multi-scale analysis, we also prove dynamical localization in a neighbourhood of the internal band edges.
I consider random Schrödinger operators with exponentially decaying single site potential, which is allowed to change sign. For this model, I prove Anderson localization both in the sense of exponentially decaying eigenfunctions and dynamical localization. Furthermore, the results imply a Wegner-type estimate strong enough to use in classical forms of multi-scale analysis.
As a supplement of our previous work, we consider the localized region of the random Schroedinger operators on $l^2({\bf Z}^d)$ and study the point process composed of their eigenvalues and corresponding localization centers. For the Anderson model, we show that, this point process in the natural scaling limit converges in distribution to the Poisson process on the product space of energy and space. In other models with suitable Wegner-type bounds, we can at least show that any limiting point processes are infinitely divisible.
We prove Anderson localization at the internal band-edges for periodic magnetic Schr{ö}dinger operators perturbed by random vector potentials of Anderson-type. This is achieved by combining new results on the Lifshitz tails behavior of the integrated density of states for random magnetic Schr{ö}dinger operators, thereby providing the initial length-scale estimate, and a Wegner estimate, for such models.
We study spectral properties of Schrödinger operators with random potentials of alloy type on $L^2(\RR)$ and their restrictions to finite intervals. A Wegner estimate for non-negative single site potentials with small support is proven. It implies the existence and local uniform boundedness of the density of states. Our estimate is valid for all bounded energy intervals. Wegner estimates play a key role in an existence proof of pure point spectrum.
In the present note we show dynamical localization for an Anderson model with missing sites in a discrete setting at the bottom of the spectrum in arbitrary dimension $d$. In this model, the random potential is defined on a relatively dense subset of $\mathbb Z^d$, not necessarily periodic, i.e., a Delone set in $\mathbb Z^d$. To work in the lower band edge we need no further assumption on the geometric complexity of the Delone set. We use a spatial averaging argument by Bourgain-Kenig to obtain a uniform Wegner estimate and an initial length scale estimate, which yields localization through t…
We prove some new pointwise-in-energy bounds on the expectations of various spectral shift functions associated with random Schrödinger operators in the continuum having Anderson-type random potentials in both finite-volume and infinite-volume. These estimates are a consequence of our new Wegner estimate for finite-volume random Schrödinger operators. For lattice models, we also obtain a representation of the infinite-volume density of states in terms of a spectral shift function. For continuum models, the corresponding measure is absolutely continuous with respect to the density of states and…
We prove spectral and dynamical localization for the multi-dimensional random displacement model near the bottom of its spectrum by showing that the approach through multiscale analysis is applicable. In particular, we show that a previously known Lifshitz tail bound can be extended to our setting and prove a new Wegner estimate. A key tool is given by a quantitative form of a property of a related single-site Neumann problem which can be described as "bubbles tend to the corners".
We consider a magnetic Schrödinger operator in two dimensions. The magnetic field is given as the sum of a large and constant magnetic field and a random magnetic field. Moreover, we allow for an additional deterministic potential as well as a magnetic field which are both periodic. We show that the spectrum of this operator is contained in broadened bands around the Landau levels and that the edges of these bands consist of pure point spectrum with exponentially decaying eigenfunctions. The proof is based on a recent Wegner estimate obtained in \cite{EH2} and a multiscale analysis.
We prove some local estimates on the trace of spectral projectors for random Schrödinger operators restricted to cubes $Λ\subset R^d$. We also present a new proof of the spectral averaging result based on analytic perturbation theory. Together, these provide another proof of the Wegner estimate with an explicit form of the constant and an alternate proof of the Birman-Solomyak formula. We also use these results to prove the Lipschitz continuity of the local density of states function for a restricted family of random Schrödinger operators on cubes $Λ\subset R^d$, for $d \geq 1$. The result hol…
We consider a negative Laplacian in multi-dimensional Euclidean space (or a multi-dimensional layer) with a weak disorder random perturbation. The perturbation consists of a sum of lattice translates of a delta interaction supported on a compact manifold of co-dimension one and modulated by coupling constants which are independent identically distributed random variables times a small disorder parameter. We establish that the spectrum of the considered operator is almost surely a fixed set, characerize its minimum, give an initial length scale estimate and the Wegner estimate and conclude that…
We prove Lifshitz behavior at the bottom of the spectrum for non--negative random potentials, i.\,e.\ show that the IDS is exponentially small at low energies. The theory is developed for the breather potential and generalized to all non--negative random potentials in a second step. Since our models need not be ergodic, we need to identify the minimum of the spectrum. We deduce an initial length scale estimate from the Lifshitz bound for the breather model and combine it with a recent Wegner estimate to establishes Anderson localization via multi-scale analysis. Finally, for ergodic models, we…
We give a detailed survey of results obtained in the most recent half decade which led to a deeper understanding of the random displacement model, a model of a random Schrödinger operator which describes the quantum mechanics of an electron in a structurally disordered medium. These results started by identifying configurations which characterize minimal energy, then led to Lifshitz tail bounds on the integrated density of states as well as a Wegner estimate near the spectral minimum, which ultimately resulted in a proof of spectral and dynamical localization at low energy for the multi-dimens…
We give a new proof of correlation estimates for arbitrary moments of the resolvent of random Schrödinger operators on the lattice that generalizes and extends the correlation estimate of Minami for the second moment. We apply this moment bound to obtain a new $n$-level Wegner-type estimate that measures eigenvalue correlations through an upper bound on the probability that a local Hamiltonian has at least $n$ eigenvalues in a given energy interval. Another consequence of the correlation estimates is that the results on the Poisson statistics of energy level spacing and the simplicity of the e…
We prove that the local eigenvalue statistics for $d=1$ random band matrices with fixed bandwidth and, for example, Gaussian entries, is given by a Poisson point process and we identify the intensity of the process. The proof relies on an extension of the localization bounds of Schenker \cite{schenker} and the Wegner and Minami estimates. These two estimates are proved using averaging over the diagonal disorder. The new component is a proof of the uniform convergence and the smoothness of the density of states function. The limit function, known to be the semicircle law with a band-width depen…
The present paper is devoted to the study of spectral properties of random Schroedinger operators. Using a finite section method for Toeplitz matrices, we prove a Wegner estimate for some alloy type models where the single site potential is allowed to change sign. The results apply to the corresponding discrete model, too. In certain disorder regimes we are able to prove the Lipschitz continuity of the integrated density of states and/or localization near spectral edges.
