We propose an implementation of quantum logic gates via virtual vibrational excitations in an ion trap quantum computer. Transition paths involving unpopulated, vibrational states interfere destructively to eliminate the dependence of rates and revolution frequencies on vibrational quantum numbers. As a consequence quantum computation becomes feasible with ions whos vibrations are strongly coupled to a thermal reservoir.
We explore spin-orbit thermal entanglement in rare-earth ions, based on a witness obtained from mean energies. The entanglement temperature $T_{E}$, below which entanglement emerges, is found to be thousands of kelvin above room temperature for all light rare earths. This demonstrate the robustness to environmental fluctuations of entanglement between internal degrees of freedom of a single ion.
We give a detailed description of the implementation of a Molmer-Sorensen gate entangling two Ca+ ions using a bichromatic laser beam near-resonant with a quadrupole transition. By amplitude pulse shaping and compensation of AC-Stark shifts we achieve a fast gate operation without compromising the error rate. Subjecting different input states to concatenations of up to 21 individual gate operations reveals Bell state fidelities above 0.80. In principle, the entangling gate does not require ground state cooling of the ions as long as the Lamb-Dicke criterion is fulfilled. We present the first e…
Laser cooled ions trapped in a linear Paul trap are long-standing ideal candidates for realizing quantum simulation, especially of many-body systems. The properties that contribute to this also provide the opportunity to demonstrate unexpected quantum phenomena in few-body systems. A pair of ions interacting in such traps exchange vibrational quanta through the Coulomb interaction. This linear interaction can be anharmonically modulated by an elementary coupling to the internal two-level structure of one of the ions. Driven by thermal energy in the passively coupled oscillators, which are them…
We propose a scheme for generating entangled states for two or more multi-level atoms in a thermal cavity. The photon-number dependent parts in the effective Hamiltonian are canceled with the assistant of a strong classical field. Thus the scheme is insensitive to both the cavity decay and the thermal field. The scheme does not require individual addressing of the atoms in the cavity. The scheme can also be used to generate entangled states for many hot multi-level ions.

We apply estimation theory to a system formed by two interacting trapped ions. By using the Fisher matrix formalism, we introduce a simple scheme for estimation of the temperature of the longitudinal vibrational modes of the ions. We use the ions interaction to effectively infer the temperature of the individual ions, by optimising the interaction time evolution and by measuring only over one of the ions. We also investigate the effect of a non-thermal reservoir over the inference approach. The non-classicality of one of the ions vibrational modes, introduced due to a squeezed thermal reservoi…
We study thermalization and non-equilibrium dynamics in a dissipative quantum many-body system -- a chain of ions with two points of the chain driven by thermal bath under different temperature. Instead of a simple linear temperature gradient as one expects from the classical heat diffusion process, the temperature distribution in the ion chain shows surprisingly rich patterns, which depend on the ion coupling rate to the bath, the location of the driven ions, and the dissipation rates of the other ions in the chain. Through simulation of the temperature evolution, we show that these unusual t…
We propose an adiabatic method for optimal phonon temperature estimation using trapped ions which can be operated beyond the Lamb-Dicke regime. The quantum sensing technique relies on a time-dependent red-sideband transition of phonon modes, described by the non-linear Jaynes-Cummings model in general. A unique feature of our sensing technique is that the relevant information of the phonon thermal distributions can be transferred to the collective spin-degree of freedom. We show that each of the thermal state probabilities is adiabatically mapped onto the respective collective spin-excitation …
Entangling gates in trapped-ion quantum computing have primarily targeted stationary ions with initial motional distributions that are thermal and close to the ground state. However, future systems will likely incur significant non-thermal excitation due to, e.g., ion transport, longer operational times, and increased spatial extent of the trap array. In this paper, we analyze the impact of such coherent motional excitation on entangling-gate error by performing simulations of Molmer-Sorenson (MS) gates on a pair of trapped-ion qubits with both thermal and coherent excitation present in a shar…
We use trapped atomic ions forming a hybrid Coulomb crystal, and exploit its phonons to study an isolated quantum system composed of a single spin coupled to an engineered bosonic environment. We increase the complexity of the system by adding ions and controlling coherent couplings and, thereby, we observe the emergence of thermalization: Time averages of spin observables approach microcanonical averages while related fluctuations decay. Our platform features precise control of system size, coupling strength, and isolation from the external world to explore the dynamics of equilibration and t…
We propose a non-adiabatic scheme for geometric quantum computation with trapped ions. By making use of the Aharonov-Anandan phase, the proposed scheme not only preserves the globally geometric nature in quantum computation, but also provides the advantage of non-adiabaticity that overcomes the problem of slow evolution in the existing adiabatic schemes. Moreover, the present scheme requires only two atomic levels in each ion, making it an appealing candidate for quantum computation.
A mixed-species geometric phase gate has been proposed for implementing quantum logic spectroscopy on trapped ions that combines probe and information transfer from the spectroscopy to the logic ion in a single pulse. We experimentally realize this method, show how it can be applied as a technique for identifying transitions in currently intractable atoms or molecules, demonstrate its reduced temperature sensitivity, and observe quantum-enhanced frequency sensitivity when it is applied to multi-ion chains. Potential applications include improved readout of trapped-ion clocks and simplified err…
We theoretically investigate the use of fast pulsed two-qubit gates for trapped ion quantum computing in a two-dimensional microtrap architecture. In one dimension, such fast gates are optimal when employed between nearest neighbours, and we examine the generalisation to a two-dimensional geometry. We demonstrate that fast pulsed gates are capable of implementing high-fidelity entangling operations between ions in neighbouring traps faster than the trapping period, with experimentally demonstrated laser repetition rates. Notably, we find that without increasing the gate duration, high-fidelity…
Trapped atomic ions have proven to be one of the most promising candidates for the realization of quantum computation due to their long trapping times, excellent coherence properties, and exquisite control of the internal atomic states. Integrating ions (quantum memory) with photons (distance link) offers a unique path to large-scale quantum computation and long-distance quantum communication. In this article, we present a detailed review of the experimental implementation of a heralded photon-mediated quantum gate between remote ions, and the employment of this gate to perform a teleportation…
Recently it has been demonstrated that an ensemble of trapped ions may serve as a quantum annealer for the number-partitioning problem [Nature Comm. DOI: 10.1038/ncomms11524]. This hard computational problem may be addressed employing a tunable spin glass architecture. Following the proposal of the trapped ions annealer, we study here its robustness against thermal effects, that is, we investigate the role played by thermal phonons. For the efficient description of the system, we use a semiclassical approach, and benchmark it against the exact quantum evolution. The aim is to understand better…
We report on the experimental investigation of an individual pseudomolecule using trapped ions with adjustable magnetically induced J-type coupling between spin states. Resonances of individual spins are well separated and are addressed with high fidelity. Quantum gates are carried out using microwave radiation in the presence of thermal excitation of the pseudomolecule's vibrations. Demonstrating Controlled-NOT gates between non-nearest neighbors serves as a proof-of-principle of a quantum bus employing a spin chain. Combining advantageous features of nuclear magnetic resonance experiments an…
Measurement-based quantum computation (MBQC) represents a powerful and flexible framework for quantum information processing, based on the notion of entangled quantum states as computational resources. The most prominent application is the one-way quantum computer, with the cluster state as its universal resource. Here we demonstrate the principles of MBQC using deterministically generated graph states of up to 7 qubits, in a system of trapped atomic ions. Firstly we implement a universal set of operations for quantum computing. Secondly we demonstrate a family of measurement-based quantum err…
We describe a hybrid laser-microwave scheme to implement two-qubit geometric phase gates in crystals of trapped ions. The proposed gates can attain errors below the fault-tolerance threshold in the presence of thermal, dephasing, laser-phase, and microwave-intensity noise. Moreover, our proposal is technically less demanding than previous schemes, since it does not require a laser arrangement with interferometric stability. The laser beams are tuned close to a single vibrational sideband to entangle the qubits, while strong microwave drivings provide the geometric character to the gate, and th…
Compact quantum data representations are essential to the emerging field of quantum algorithms for data analysis. We introduce two new data encoding schemes, QCrank and QBArt, which have a high degree of quantum parallelism through uniformly controlled rotation gates. QCrank encodes a sequence of real-valued data as rotations of the data qubits, allowing for high storage density. QBArt directly embeds a binary representation of the data in the computational basis, requiring fewer quantum measurements and lending itself to well-understood arithmetic operations on binary data. We present several…
We demonstrate for the first time a linear-zigzag phase transition induced solely by temperature of the $^{40}$Ca$^{+}$ ion crystals in a surface-electrode trap. In contrast to the previously observed counterparts based on change of the mechanical equilibrium conditions of the ions, our presented structural phase transition occurs due to controllable influence of thermal fluctuation. The ions' temperature is well controlled by tuning the cooling laser and the experimental observation could be fully understood by classical Langevin equation in addition to the effects from thermal fluctuation. O…
Two or three dimensional Paul traps can confine a large number of ions forming a Wigner crystal, which would provide an ideal architecture for scalable quantum computation except for the micromotion, an issue that is widely believed to be the killer for high fidelity quantum gates. Surprisingly, here we show that the micromotion is not an obstacle at all for design of high fidelity quantum gates, even though the magnitude of the micromotion is significantly beyond the requirement of the Lamb-Dicke condition. Through exact solution of the quantum Mathieu equations, we demonstrate the principle …
We demonstrate a trapped-ion entangling-gate scheme proposed by Bermudez et al. [Phys. Rev. A 85, 040302 (2012)]. Simultaneous excitation of a strong carrier and a single-sideband transition enables deterministic creation of entangled states. The method works for magnetic field-insensitive states, is robust against thermal excitations, includes dynamical decoupling from qubit dephasing errors, and provides simplifications in experimental implementation compared to some other entangling gates with trapped ions. We achieve a Bell state fidelity of 0.974(4) and identify the main sources of error.
A Wigner crystal formed with trapped ion can undergo structural phase transition, which is determined only by the mechanical conditions on a classical level. Instead of this classical result, we show that through consideration of quantum and thermal fluctuation, a structural phase transition can be solely driven by change of the system's temperature. We determine a finite-temperature phase diagram for trapped ions using the renormalization group method and the path integral formalism, and propose an experimental scheme to observe the predicted temperature-driven structural phase transition, wh…
Linear arrays of trapped and laser cooled atomic ions are a versatile platform for studying emergent phenomena in strongly-interacting many-body systems. Effective spins are encoded in long-lived electronic levels of each ion and made to interact through laser mediated optical dipole forces. The advantages of experiments with cold trapped ions, including high spatiotemporal resolution, decoupling from the external environment, and control over the system Hamiltonian, are used to measure quantum effects not always accessible in natural condensed matter samples. In this review we highlight recen…
Vibrational degrees of freedom in trapped-ion systems have recently been gaining attention as a quantum resource, beyond the role as a mediator for entangling quantum operations on internal degrees of freedom, because of the large available Hilbert space. The vibrational modes can be represented as quantum harmonic oscillators and thus offer a Hilbert space with infinite dimension. Here we review recent theoretical and experimental progress in the coherent manipulation of the vibrational modes, including bosonic encoding schemes in quantum information, reliable and efficient measurement techni…
We propose a scalable ion trap architecture for universal quantum computation, which is composed of an array of ion traps with one ion confined in each trap. The neighboring traps are designed capable of merging into one single trap. The universal two-qubit $\sqrt{SWAP}$ gate is realized by direct collision of two neighboring ions in the merged trap, which induces an effective spin-spin interaction between two ions. We find that the collision-induced spin-spin interaction decreases with the third power of two ions' trapping distance. Even with a $200\ μm$ trapping distance between atomic ions …
We experimentally demonstrate a method to determine the temperature of trapped ions which is suitable for monitoring fast thermalization processes. We show that observing and analyzing the lineshape of dark resonances in the fluorescence spectrum provides a temperature measurement which accurate over a large dynamic range, applied to single ions and small ion crystals. Laser induced fluorescence is detected over a time of only $20\,μ$s allowing for rapid determination of the ion temperature. In the measurement range of $10^{-1}-10^{+2}\,$mK we reach better than $15\,\%$ accuracy. Tuning the co…
